Tuesday To do...Creative Teacher Gift
This week I am working on creating teacher gifts that will be ready to send out next week. These are the requirements for my teacher gift; Hand made, A little Chocolate and, a gift that they can enjoy and relax.

This is what I have decided on for our teacher gifts...

Supply List: 1 antique jar, Sugar, Ribbon, Chocolate Stick -from local chocolate store and a hand made antiqued Card

Card Reads:
Sugar and Spice and all things nice that's what Teachers are made of.
(then add some personal sentiment)

Best every Sugar Scrub Recipe (never again use those $30.00 scrubs)
Regular White Sugar
Coarse White Sugar (just add to the top for decor)
3 Tablespoons of Olive Oil (more or less can be added depending on preferred consistency
1 Tablespoon of Almond Extract (or other flavors as preferred)
3 Teaspoons of Vanilla Extract
In a Large bowl you will mix sugar, oil and extracts until desired consistency
(I like it best a bit coarse I feel like it exfoliates better and is wonderful on ruff hands!).

Thursday Thought... Organizational Tips for staying sane through the end of the school year

Being a mom of four girls this hands down has to be the craziest time of the year. In talking with other mothers I have put together a list of Tricks and Tips on keeping organized and enjoying the last few weeks of the school year rather than pulling your hair out, which is never a pretty site.

1. Communication: Get your family together at the beginning of each week and talk about schedules, events, homework, and any other things that each member feels is important.

2. Put it in writing: This is where you can get creative! Here are a few ideas from other moms that I just love...

My Mom "Counter Calender" get a calender and leave it on your counter this makes it easy for every member of the family to see what is happening.

Gabby "We use a combination of iCal, Outlook, Google docs and a big family calendar made of post-it notes to manage everything.

Julie "I have a clip board on my counter that has a simple calendar that is broken down into days with every ones schedule the best part is the kids fun comments that get added as we go.

Lisa "I purchase every year a wall size large Calendar to keep track of the year end events. I then place it in my laundry room where every one walks past. I also give each child a colored marker so that they may change things and mark off as the count down begins to summer. I love this tradition it has made everyone feel important and independent.

Katie "I have decorated cloths pins with my child's name on it and I have placed a clothes line in our kitchen and then I place an agenda sheet to each of their names. During our breakfast together we sit and eat and talk about the daily events. This has been a fun way to keep organized and often other things gather on the cloths pin and this keeps it entertaining as well.

Kathleen "I keep a note book with me at all times to keep track of everything and then I also use post-it notes, this time of year I see all sorts of crazy things"

Sara "I put all my scheduled events in my phone and make sure that I get reminder calls and of course I make sure it is with me at all times"

3. Grab Bag: I have found that during this busy time of life the little ones are needing some extra help. I keep a small bag in my laundry room that has all the necessities that I would need to help keep the little ones entertained. Example; A charged Nintendo DS, book, colored pencils, coloring book, snack, water bottle, silly putty and anything else creative to help pass the time during those long events. Don't forget about a camera this is a very special time of year!

Handmade Travel Busy Box for kids

Tuesday to do... Handmade Busy box for kids when traveling

Our family is headed to Nebraska this weekend for Mothers Day! lucky me! it is a 10 hour trip from where we live. It is a tradition of mine to make each one of my kids a busy box to help pass the time during our adventure!. Here are a few pictures of what is included... Good luck to me! 1. I always add a black note book with a cover design that pertains to our trip. This time it will be Mount Rushmore and some historical facts about Nebraska. I also add a pencil zipper pouch with new crayons, pens, scissors, glue, and don't forget a roll of tape!. Inside the folder I attach to do papers from the wonderful site http://www.momsminivan.com/

2. This is Lap buddy how ever it is very expensive and not so kid tested!. I am going to take the plastic one from Walmart and cover it with some attractive Fabric and then add some pins so that they can add their own art work from the trip.

Pipe Cleaners of all colors; kids can make just about anything out of pipe cleaners
Tin Foil; our favorites are hats and headbands
Beads, buttons and Ribbon; necklaces, bracelets and bookmarks
Balloons; balloon animals and puppets, this is a good activity to get wiggles out
Popsicle sticks and a coloring book; my little women love to write and create plays
Scrapbook embellishments and a Notebook; They love decorating their travel journals and on the way home of our trip we have a sharing moment and they pick there favorite thought on the trip. Love this one!

Front Door Ideas

Tuesday to do... Front Door Decorating Ideas

This past weekend I was able to take a mini trip with my family up north, I saw the most beautiful yet simple front doors and then I came home and wow does our area need a front door make-over. Which lead me into giving some friendly tips on making a front door welcoming and beautiful!

The over used Door Decoration

Tip #1. When hanging a decoration on your door don't just use what everyone is using. The over used door decoration is way over done and it doesn't say anything about your style or your creativeness. I hope that in the photos below I have given you some fresh and new ideas on creative decorations for your front door, it is the first impression to your home.

Tip #2: Since paper is always in and easy I picked this photo from Martha Stewart.com it is real branches with paper flowers on it. I think this would add a beautiful spring look just by adding a ribbon around the top and letting it hang upside down freely on your door. Plus this would be a great project for the kids as well!

Tip #3: Bring freshness right to your door. The daffodil is a beautiful flower one that for sure will add warmth and charm to any front door. This technique can be found on Martha Stewart.com

Tip #4: This is a great front door idea for those that have an apartment or a narrow door and can't handle a wreath or larger accessory. This project is made by taking a place mat and wrapping flowers (I think Hydrangeas would even look better)and then adding a ribbon to hang by. What a simple creative project that would be.

Tip #5: Lettering I love the use of lettering and this is one that I have used before. You can find all sorts of lettering on line and also make it yourself out of Foam Board if you need a lighter version or Wood if you need it to with stand the weather. This look is all around classy and for those that are tired of using flowers this is a nice change.

Tip #6: The good ole stand by round floral wreath. This can be found on Martha Stewart.com and I would love to see the monogram lettering in black and I would actually attach it right on the door.

For each one of our crafts we finish we will be donating $1.00 to a Local Charity (Janie is still deciding which one, I have given her three choices and she is being very thoughtful in choice). Tuesday To Do...Mom & Me 1st ever Creative Dot Mom craft night

My little women gave me the idea to have a moms and daughters craft night. We will be doing three stations 1. Bow Making 2. Jewelry and 3. Room Decor and of course eating some yummy treats and listening to a mix of music for teenagers and moms (music is a must!). If you are just logging in on my site to check out projects they will be posted by April 21st. I am excited for this event and I am looking forward to sharing my passion for projects with my friends and family. I think that doing projects is even better if you have a purpose and you can share your secrets! How to choose color for any space
Start with the Color Mood
a. Explore your feelings toward a color, look towards your wardrobe if you are unsure what colors you like, You tend to wear what colors make you feel best.
b. Decide what mood you are trying to create in the space.
c. Consider who uses the space, their personalities and preferences (you may not want red in a child's room that is anxious)

Now that you have found your Color Mood
a. Look art a color wheel and find the pure color on the wheel (normally the top) and look at all the Hues within that color and narrow it down to one that your eye enjoys looking and how it makes you feel.
b. Go to http://www.benjaminmoore.com/, personal color Viewer, this will let you explore with colors that you chosen.

Check list of Creating Comfort with Color
1. The size of the Space
b. Darker colors on a wall will make space appear smaller where are lighter ones will make the space appear light and more spacial
2. The light Source of the room is key! If you are using a dark color and you have no windows you may want use the tone of the pure color.
3. Architectural Elements, say you have a dark mahogany mantel above a fire place putting a red color next to it will make it dissipate, unless that's your objective.
4. The furnishings and accessories that are already there and you are not planning on changing it. Make sure the color you choose will compliment the existing pieces.
5. The time of day when the space will be use. This is important to know the function of the room and what color will help serve its purpose and not compete.
6. Buy the smallest amount of the color that you have chosen and paint it on some old wood pieces and put it in the space for a week or so. Watch to see what it will look like in all times of day and to see if it is in Harmony with the rest of the space. But most of all you need to love it!.

Tuesday to do is featuring creative ways to make a cake stand. This project inspired me because in our home we are trying to simply and minimise our expenditures for our Birthday Parties. We have a large family and in the past we have hosted three to four birthday parties for each of our children to accommodate everyone...well no more! I have decided to do whats best for our family and lifestyle. On Thursday I will be posting ideas on Keeping it Simple for Birthday Parties. But for now here are a few pictures of some creative ways on making a Cake stand.

Many items can be used to create pedestal plates. You will need a sturdy and stable base and a flat plate or item for the top portion as well as some strong adhesive. Simply attach the base item to the under side of the plate or top piece with either a permanent epoxy or removable putty. Make sure the bond and hold of the adhesive is strong enough for what you will be placing on the top. Great places to search for unique items to create with are at thrift or consignment type stores. Look around your home as well to see what you already may have that can be used. Be creative!
Base Ideas (must have a flat top: Ceramic, brass, wood, silver, glass or other candlesticks glass vases (can be filled with candy, flowers, plants, photos or other items) flowerpots (use right side up or turn upside down) a thick stick or log a watering can tin cans blocks of wood jars a box lampshades other pedestal plates (to tier) stacks of books short lamp base (may need to cut top flush)
Plate/Top ideas: Any type of plates or platters (from small to large and different shaped) flat clock (remove hands and clockworks) photo frame with glass (and photo or other artwork) book shallow basket bowl teacup (this would make a small individual cupcake type holder) tray baking pan
Creative Ways to Dress Up a Simple Cake or Pedestal Plate: Simply attaching items or embellishments to a basic cake plate or pedestal plate can turn an ordinary serving dish into a real unique statement piece. Remember to use removable adhesive for most items. You can make a plate coordinate with a theme or just add some extra pizazz.
Be creative and think out of the box.
Embellishing Ideas: Attach ruffles of tulle, newspaper, book pages, fabric, scrapbook paper, tissue paper, etc. under rim tie ribbons around edge or base attach trims (lace, pom poms, hanging beads, rhinestones, etc.) around the edge add removable rub-ons onto cake plate to create a message write or draw on the cake plate with food marker pens attach die cut strips and designs (cut from card stock or other decorative paper) around cake plate hang cut ribbons to create a fringe along edge of plate cake plates with openings along the edges can be used to hang ornaments, beads, prisms, trinkets, etc.

Pure Talent! Mr. Michael Buble

Last night I was able to attend a Buble concert in my home town of SLC, Utah. This was my Christmas gift from my hubby man does he ever know me well!. This was a night of pure joy and happiness and at times I even felt my soul sing!. With a music background their are only few performers that truly wow me and he did it. The words that entered my head during this magical night were; gifted, gracious, genuine, beautiful, heartfelt, inspiring, humble and just simply WOW. If you get a chance listen to one of his songs today it will leave you feeling loved and inspired to be all that you become and to live and love life! Thank you to Mr. Buble for the wonderful concert and for sharing your gift with the world! we are so blessed by it!

My project this week is making kitchen curtains. This is the last touch in my kitchen for now although it seems like my home is always in a process of change. I had a designer friend once tell me a home is...consistent change their for you should not set your mind on perfection. I am going to take my inspiration from my favorite decorating magazine Ballard Design. Here are a few other kitchen curtains that I just love. Thursday Thought... Spring Cleaning
The weather has been wonderful in the west and it makes me get a bit of spring cleaning fever but then again I don't have the time or the energy to do either. Since my hysterectomy and tumor I have been battling with a bad case of the winter blues and low energy! If this sounds like you and you could give me some ideas on how to reverse this please I would love some friendly advice. A couple of years ago I was introduced to an amazing book which is now my bible for Spring Cleaning! and so it is time to face the music of my lazy winter and try to get better organized. Here are my favorite highlights...
1. Analyze: Take stock in your current situation where you are going and whats holding you back.
2. Strategize: Create a plan of action and a schedule of when to make it happen
3. Attack: Dive into the clutter, sort and purge and make sure you see visible results.
I love the subtopic in the Attack category and this is where I think the inspiration lies.
1. Sort, 2. Purge, 3. Assign a home, 4. Containerize and 5. Equalize

This week along with St.Patricks Day traditions I decided to redo my daughters hair bows. I have gone to a second hand store and my local bargain store to find some interesting bling blings as we call it in our house. I am hoping to add some dimension and new sparkle to our old and boring bows, headbands and clips. I will be posting my pictures on Thursday of my new creations. below are some inspirations of headbands, clips and bows.

Tuesday to do...Kids Wall Art

Tuesday to do...I have been going crazy with my daughters drawings and cut out paper designs all over her walls,doors and closets and this is when inspiration hit. I decided to make one entire wall in her room an art center. I bought an antique white frame from Hobby Lobby (love this store) and then went to our local hardware store to buy cork board and this is when this project becomes tricky...the hardware stores are no longer buying cork board because it is environmentally unsafe (and also due to the EPA chaining themselves to the isle). After walking down every isle with screaming toddlers at my side I found something that will have the same effect which is Sound Board plus it is very inexpensive. After many coats of white paint it still looked unfinished so I decide to cover it with fabric. I also will be adding these cute green pots below the frame to hold my daughters art supplies. My daughter is happy and organized and so this makes for a Happy Mom!

Thursday Thought...Design Tips!

Yeah its Thursday!
My friends are always asking me what my thoughts are about this and that in regards to decorating in there home and so I thought that I would share my tips with all my readers and my other friends that want to ask for my advice but don't for fear that they may be abusing our friendship. Here are my simple and easy decorating tips that could be done in an afternoon if feeling ambitious.
1. Gather and Hide Clutter! find inexpensive containers or baskets to hold toys, magazines, books or shoes that seem to find there way around a room, especially if you have a creative toddler.
2. Move Furniture! get furniture away from the walls this helps create a intimate grouping and adds dimension in any space.
3. Add Texture! this could accomplished with a great cozy throw, a plant, or some old books, or window treatments or other fabrics.
4. Add Color! this is always the tricky one. Look to your own closet...why? we tend to wear colors that we like and that is pleasing to your eye. Pick that favorite color add it on the wall, floor or even a upholstered chair. A more simple way to add a color is to use it as an accent color in throw pillows, a painting on the wall, or other accessories.
5. Lighting! I love lighting this is probably my forte. This is key to good design! you should try to have three sources of light in each room. Example: Window, Lamp, overhead lighting and Candles. I love to think of lighting as the jewels of a space.
6. Have a focal point! this gives any space a sense of balance and cohesiveness. Try using large pieces of furniture or a permanent structures like a fireplace.
7. Your space is your Story! remember that your space should reflect you and should tell a story! this will help you stay original and creative. Love all that is around you!

St. Patricks Day Preparations....
Every year for St. Pattys day I make green shamrock pancakes and I Shamrock the kids rooms with cut out green paper shamrocks that have personal love notes on them. Also we have crazy hair day and with our traditional loud and crazy shamrock headbands. This year I will be making shamrock pins that they can wear on shoes, clothes or hair. My kids and I love this holiday and you know me it gives me an excuse for a project.

Thursday Thought....Idea Notebook

Today is Thursday and I got the thought to call this my thought day since I have so little during the day and the minute I hit the pillow at night my brain goes crazy with decorating and projects ideas and the latest is the someday book that I would like to write. I have always kept a notepad on my night stand to help with my sleep issues and to quickly write down my thoughts so that I can get back to the restlessness. I know this is nothing new or original but I thought that my readers might bring back an old favorite and make sure that they are filling it with thoughts and ideas. Happy Thoughts!

Tuesday To do...Teenage Daughters Desk

The Project for This week was finding a replacement desk for my daughters room since I so kindly took her white kids desk and moved it into her sisters room (which caused some sisterly contention). I told my daughter to give me two weeks to find a new desk well this gave me a good excuse to shop and did I shop. It took me a total of two days to find the perfect desk along with only spending less than 200.00 which was my tight budget. Thank goodness for second hand stores I was able to keep in my budget and better yet it was a pottery barn scratch and dent. Now my daughters relationship is on the mend and she is happy with her almost completed bedroom.

I picked a simple black and white stripe to be made for a chair cushion. The color of the room is purple, black and white and since the walls are busy I thought that a stripe would add some texture and yet help draw the eye to another space in the room.

Along side the desk is a traditional black chair that had some curves at the top to help soften the room. Also to help add a whimsical feel that is felt by the painted black and white wall mural.

This is the treasure! A Pottery Barn scratch and dent desk with minor scratches on the top and one on the side I couldn't pass it up and it looks perfect in my daughters room. Some of you might be asking why not go black well here is my answer for that...I thought that the room could use some warmth and a classic style and color of furniture so that in the future we can use this desk as a transitional piece. Also I was a bit tired of all black it can be a bit much for any one let alone a teenage daughter that it trying to deal with emotions.

Tuesdays To Do...Valentine Purse

Tuesdays to do... is creating a one of kind Valentines Box for my daughter. My oldest daughter school class is having a valentine box decorating contest and of course the one from last year just wouldn't do "no way mom" is the response that I got. Creative Dot Mom was up to the challenge and loves anything creative and challenging with design aspects that is. This is my to do this week and I am glad that my daughter and I can have fun creating together!

I will be using a design from Teresa Collins from Melstampz.blogspot I love this design and I think it will transform into a Valentines box quite well.

This is the Fabric that I will be using for the base of the Valentines Box along with coordinating Fabrics, a polka dot one of course. I will use the template from the picture above and the only change that I will be making is the Handle I will be using Heart beads along with lots of ribbon.

Valentines Project Day with my little women
Every year I have a fun afternoon with the little women in my home.This valentines week I am going to atempt making homemade heart suckers. I have always wanted to make suckers and yes get a use out of my candy thermometer that sits so quietly in my utensil draw. Plus I get to enlighten the minds of my girls (a bit of selfish reasoning too)with taking a trip to our local bakery shop to pick out molds, sucker sticks, flavored oil and wraps. I love Holidays! and spending it with the ones that I love is a blessing and a treat!.

Thursday Design Tool : 3m Glue spray is a must for any designer or crafter! This it the tool for Design that you can not work with out! I use 3m spray glue for everything that I design. It is easy to use and it holds fantastic. However it is a bit pricey and I have only seen it at large craft stores like Joeann's or a specialty art supply store. This is a must in your design or craft closet.

Tuesday To Do's...Teacher Birthday Gift

My daughter came to me at 10:00 on Thursday night and said "mom my teachers birthday is on Sunday and I would love to give her a homemade present tomorrow and my brain thought Homemade = creativity and yeah my creative juices began. knowing that this teacher loves polka dots and homemade gifts I knew that my daughter and I could come up with something that any teacher could use and love. I found an old clip board and applied the good ole Mode Pod (loved it) covered it with paper and then added a few embellishments and here you have it. Also I grabbed an old pickle jar and wrapped the same paper around it and the old jar became a new pencil holder to match the clipboard. My daughter said that her teacher was thrilled! and I was happy with the smile on my daughters face!

Hello Creative Dot Mom Readers!
Yes I am back! New years resolutions and goals and yes I hope a better year!. This last year I was diagnosed with a brain tumor and it threw my life into a gray fog. I didn't have the energy for anything else besides trying to keep my spirits up and keeping my family happy so to my followers I am sorry for the few posts the last couple of months.
I am looking forward to 2010 and this is the year for me! I am excited to again be blogging and there are a few changes I would like to make....
1. Tuesdays are Creative Dot To Do's this is where I will blog on my latest project.
2. Thursdays are Creative Dot Designs...on this day I will blog about my favorite design or design tool that I have seen or a design tip that I would like to share.
3. First of the Month...I would like to post a Creative Dot Mom Challenge. I am challenging myself to finish a goal a month whether it be a long forgotten project, a room make-over or a personal goal ( I might need some encouragement from my followers).
