Cover Your Own Baby Wipes Case

I figured since I just had a baby, I should make myself some of the cute baby things I've made for others. If you want to make your own, click here for the tutorial we've shown before.

I love the colors pink & black together. And I love anything with damask designs--as if you couldn't tell :)

I double layered my ribbon on the top of the case with a white lace ribbon & a black satin ribbon. Then around the edge I used a ruffled pink ribbon to add some color.

On the top I wanted a button, but I couldn't find one big enough that matched my colors, so I made my a flower with the same pink ruffled ribbon & added the button on top.

LOVE IT! And now I need to either find or make a super cute girly diaper bag to match.

Matching burp cloths are in the works ;)

Personalized Scrapbooks as Gifts

These are a few of the books I made to give as gifts at Christmastime to those who work at my husband's office.

I thought long and hard about what to make.

I wanted to make something, rather then purchasing something and I wanted it to be personalized and have meaning.

After having my very own TOFW book, which I love, I decided to make something similar.

Before making these, we collected notes from each of the employees describing what they liked about each of their colleagues and then we included those words in each book.

These books were quite the undertaking and I realized soon after I started just how long it was going to take to make 13 of them, but I'm so please with how they turned out. I wanted these wonderful people to have their very own book where they could read positive uplifting thoughts about themselves & I also wanted them to know just how appreciated they are.

I have a few more pictures & details to share, but I'll save that for another post.

Succulent Wreath

Mother's Day Wreath

This post is a project made by my neighbor and friend Machelle.

She called me the other day and asked for my help in making bows for the wreaths she made for the Mothers in her life. I jumped at the opportunity to do something creative since I'd rather do that then clean my craft room which was covered, every inch, in saw dust and paint dust :) (My basement is in the renovation process.)

After seeing just how beautiful her wreaths were, I asked if I could take pictures and share them here on our blog. They're too pretty not to share.

These wreaths are so cool because they're alive and they'll continue to get fuller because the plants send off shooters and grow new plants.

These are the burlap flowers I helped her make & I think she made an awesome choice going with burlap, it adds just the right touch.

We made these flowers with 3" burlap ribbon and you can see previous instructions here.

Machelle had the awesome idea to spray paint the burlap so it would bring out the colors of the succulents. She painted one roll with burgundy spray paint & one with turquoise spray paint. She didn't spray paint them solid, but randomly sprayed it & I love the look!

For the smaller flowers, she cut the ribbon in half before gathering them on the sewing machine.

Here are some close up pics of some of the pretty plants.

She clipped these pretty purple succulents from her front yard.

You can use your own plants if you have them and don't want to go buy new ones.

We don't have a step by step picture process of making these wreaths, but here are the general instructions:

Supplies:

wire wreath
Sphagnum moss
succulent plants
bobby pins
fishing line
bows or ribbon for embellishment

Instructions:

Soak the sphagnum moss.
Turn wreath over and stuff back of wreath with moss. Wrap fishing line around it to secure moss.
Turn wreath to front side & stuff with moss. Wrap fishing line around it to secure moss.
Poke holes in moss & place succulent stem in hole. Secure plant with bobby pin.
Add bow or ribbon for embellishment.

Crayon Monogram

Teacher Appreciation Gift

This week was teacher appreciation week & I didn't want the week to pass without making something for my daughter's teacher.

We made the same thing last year for my childrens' teachers & you can see them here.

That post also includes instructions on how to make your own.

This year I decided to do rainbow colors & to cut the crayons to fit exactly within the letter.

In the post I created last year there are two other variations on how I cut the crayons.

I like this look because I think it gives it a nice clean look.

I really wanted to do the crayons with an ombre effect using the teacher's favorite colors, but I would have had to purchase way too many boxes of crayons.

I guess I could have just made a smaller letter & used less crayons, but I like this 8" x 10" size.

Now that I've made these two years in a row, my daughter wants her own for her bedroom, so maybe I'll just get to make one ombre style for her bedroom.

I think this would be adorable in a bedroom or nursery.

Raised Garden Beds

Raised Garden Beds

Today I'm so excited to share one of my recent projects with you--my raised garden beds.

This was a fun project for the whole family to help with.

These boxes are approximately 2'x6' and they are made from cedar fence posts with the dog-eared ends cut off.

I constructed them by stacking two posts & attaching a piece of wood on the middle inside & on each end. After that, I attached each end to each side & added a ledge on the top to give the box a finished look.

I wanted to add protection to the bottom to keep critters out so we stapled plastic chicken fencing to the bottom.

To the inside of the boxes we stapled down weed fabric before adding soil.

We also wanted to have a system in place in case we had to cover our plants in time of frost or to protect from birds & critters, so we set up this PVC pipe system so we'd be able to cover the boxes with plastic or netting if we needed to.

I attached PVC pipes to each corner & center with metal strapping.

This is what they look like in my yard & this is a picture of them being tested with PVC pipe.

I looked at a few different ideas on the Internet & came up with my own design for a watering system. I drilled a hole a the end of one box & then in the middle of the other two boxes to run my drip system through.

Each box has a drip hose snaked through the soil so the plants stay nice and hydrated.

And voila, this is what they look like completed, before any plants were planted in them.

And here they are again with our garden in full force.

Each of these plants grew from starters I purchased at the store rather than seed.

I was afraid that I planted too late, so I didn't bother with seeds.

It's so exciting to have plants growing in our garden & I hope this inspires you to go out & plant your own raised garden beds.

Indoor Gardening

My son is really into plants & planting, so every year around this time I have pots all over my kitchen & his bedroom. In an effort to make his indoor gardening more pretty for the house I offered to buy some cute apothecary jars for him to add his plants too.

I felt like this was a great compromise & they look so pretty in our living room.

Plus it's also a fun afternoon activity to do with your kids.

I was so excited to find these apothecary jars at 50% at my local craft store--score!

If you decide to do this type of indoor gardening, you'll need to let the plants air out every once and awhile. It can get really humid in the jars if you never remove the lids.

My daughter has had this plant for years and she's quite proud that it's still alive.

Granted it doesn't need to be watered very often :)

And my son grew these Coleus plants from seed.

We plan on transplanting them to the yard as they get bigger.

I wish this project meant that there were no other plant pots in my kitchen, but this year my kids decided they wanted to buy banana pepper & jalapeno plants. So now they're in pots on our kitchen counter waiting until it's warm enough to go in the garden.

Oh well, I'm grateful my kids enjoy gardening so much. I hope this means they'll be helping me weed this summer. Wishful thinking! :)

Easter Basket Cupcakes

This weekend I had family in town for Easter Sunday and I made some fun treats for our Easter luncheon. This was another Pinterest inspired idea.

Not only were these cute, but they were yummy too!!

These were so fun to make, especially since I had help :)

To make these you'll need:

cake mix
sugar cones
frosting
coconut
food coloring
jelly beans
licorice

Directions:

Cut the bottom off the sugar cones.
Place sugar cones in cupcake baking cups & in cupcake pan. (Tip: I used the mini cupcake baking cups to catch any stray cake batter at the bottom of the open cone.)
Prepare cake mix, fill cones half way & bake cupcakes.
Color coconut with food coloring.
Remove cupcake baking cups from cone & frost cupcakes once they've cooled.
Dip tops of cupcakes into colored coconut.
Top with jelly beans. (Tip: If jelly beans fall off, put a little frosting on back side of jelly bean to make it stick to top of coconut.)
Cut licorice to size and place on cupcake to look like basket handle.

You can also make these without the cones.

I made regular sized cupcakes with the rest of the cake batter & we braided the licorice for the handles.

Fabric Trees Tutorials

If you've been following our blog, you'll know that I just recently had a baby after a difficult pregnancy and I hadn't been able to do much blogging during that time. Well, I'm slowly getting back into my groove, trying to post more regularly while taking care of a newborn & 3 kids at the same time :)

I started this project in November, but just recently was able to finish it. I realize it's not Christmas time anymore, but I still wanted to share so this idea could be used for next year.

I may or may not have had my Christmas tree up until March ;)

My Christmas tree colors were black, grey, silver & fuchsia.

I always make my cone trees to match, so I searched for fabric in those same colors.

I have instructions for my pink fabric ruffle tree here.

And now for the tutorials on the other two trees...

1. Find cute fabric that you like.
I already had these fabrics in my stash, so I didn't have to buy anymore black fabric.

2. Cut out lots of circles of different sizes.

3. Make lots of different sized pom poms with circles. Instructions for these here.

4. Find a cone to use or make your own.

5. Cover the cone in solid color fabric & hot glue pom poms to tree.

Then you're done!

My first idea was to cover the entire tree in pom poms, but I didn't like the look, so I took off the pom poms and started again. I decided to place the pom poms swirling up the side of the tree and I think it turned out really nice.

This tree was the easiest tree I've ever made.

1. Find cute fabric you like.
2. Hot glue it to the cone.
And you're done!

Easy peasy!

I just love the texture of the trees and they are durable because they're made with fabric.

These awesome trees can also be used for other holidays or as home decor year round.
Here they are as Valentine decor...

Or you could use them anywhere in your home as cute decorations.

Just make them in colors to match your home and you're set!

Pineapple Frost

I've had requests for this recipe from this beach themed party, so I thought I'd post the recipe.

I originally got this recipe from this talented lady, Tiffany.

Pineapple Frost

-3 cups pineapple sherbet
-2 cans (8oz each) crushed pineapple, drained ( I just used one whole 20 oz can)
-2 cups half and half
-2/3 Cup light corn syrup
-Ginger ale (or sprite)

In blender combine everything except the ginger ale. Blend well, pour into bowl and freeze. Take drink out 1 hour before using so it softens some. Add ginger ale to make a slush.

This amount makes enough for a punch bowl, so if you want to make a smaller amount for just at home I would 1/2 or 1/3 the recipe.

Introducing Baby Carlie

This is what I've been working on for the past 36 weeks...

Yesterday we were so blessed to have Carlie join our family.

She was our Valentine surprise born 4 weeks early at 4lbs. 13oz. & 18"

The kids are no longer sad that she's not a boy.

I knew once they saw her that they would love her to pieces.

We are so blessed and so thankful that everything went well with the delivery and Carlie is just perfect!!

Valentine Can

This year for my son's 5th grade class they were give #10 size cans to decorate for their Valentine's party next week.

He informed me that they are having a decorating contest and the awards will be for things like, the prettiest, the most unique, the funniest, the ugliest, etc.

When he heard the ugliest he decided right away that he wanted to make his into a trash can.

After all, it already kinda looks like a trash can.

He came up with this design all on his own and I helped him put it together so that it wouldn't fall apart.

We lined the can with a plastic grocery bag, then attached pieces of crumpled up cardstock and newspaper to the edges & printed labels for the front.

I think it's the cutest Valentine trash can I've ever seen, but of course I'm a little partial to it's creator :)

Valentine Crafts & Treats

Last week we were contacted by parenting.com to be featured on their Valentine Crafts for Kids post & we were so excited to share the following post with them.

Since I've been in the midst of a difficult pregnancy I haven't been able to do much crafting this season, so I'm going to share the projects we did last year.

Lame I know, but it's the best I can do right now :)

This is a ruffle sign I made for my living room.

I made these S'mores pops for my kids to take to school for their Valentine treats.

Creative Momma C created this wall vinyl for her hubby for Valentines.

This is a ruffle heart wreath I made.

Creative Momma C made these cake balls for her daughters' school teachers.

I created this Valentine bulletin board at the elementary school for the teacher spotlight.

Creative Momma C made this cute "Amour" t-shirt for her daughter.

These are the Valentine treats we made 2 years ago for my girls' classes & my kids helped make them.

And these are Valentine treats my son wanted for his class & they were fun to put together as a family.

Hope some of these ideas inspire you to create something today. I know I'm chomping at the bit to do something creative! I just wish my craft room was clean so I could work in it :)

Dinner Cook-Off Competition

This week we had a fun activity with the youth at our church. It was a dinner cook-off competition.

Each class was in charge of coming up with a meal, cooking it and decorating the room for the meal.

One class of girls decided on a garden theme and this is what they came up with...

A garden arch with the food set up buffet style.

On the menu they decided on lemon pepper chicken, twice baked potatoes, rice balls, rolls, ceasar salad, lemon bars & cran-apple juice.

Each of the young women was in charge of a food item and they did a great job making it!

The girls also had the table set up with beautiful dishes, but none of those pictures turned out.

The dishes went along with the garden theme and I just loved the ambiance of the room.

The other group of girls had a Parisian theme and their room was so romantic looking.

Eiffel tower and all!

Both walls were lighted & they had beautiful cello music playing.

This is their beautiful table setting.

On their menu they had lasagna, salad, rolls, jello, sparkling punch & a yummy brownie dessert.

So many cute details.

This activity was a lot of fun. It was planned and organized by the young men group and they did a great job. They had the bishopric sample all the foods anonymously (they didn't know which group was in charge of which room) and then they awarded prizes.

We were so proud of our youth for working so hard on this activity. Both groups of girls won prizes. The Parisian theme won best overall and a couple others & the garden theme won best atmosphere & one other. They were all so pleased with themselves & it was fun to watch their excitement.

If you need an fun idea for the youth in your church I would recommend this activity.

Marble Cupcakes

Saturday was my son's birthday so I decided to take treats to his classroom on Friday.

The problem was that I didn't remember until Friday afternoon, so I had to make something fast and easy.

Lucky for me, I have quite a few cake mixes in my pantry.

I wanted to make them look interesting, so I decided to go for a marbled look.

I decided on a Devil's Food cake mix & a Yellow Butter cake mix.

I made each cake mix then filled half of each cupcake wrapper with each batter.

Then I just used a knife to swirl the two flavors together.

Super easy because I was using boxed mixes.

Then I used a chocolate & a cream cheese frosting, swirled them together on top of each cupcake & topped them with heath pieces.

Super easy, super yummy & barely made it to class before school got out :)

2011 Wrap Up

I love New Years when we all get to reflect on the past year and all the things we learned. And it's also a time to make goals for the New Year.

Today I'm going to share my favorite projects that I did in 2011:

#1 This is my favorite furniture project of 2011.

It's my Craigslist find that I re-finished and it's such a nice addition to our home.

I certainly learned a lot about re-finishing furniture with this project.

#2 This is my favorite sewing project of 2011.

This was the first time I made something by making my own pattern & I'm so glad to say that my daughter loves it!

This was definitely a labor of love.

#3 This is my favorite home improvement project of 2011.

This was something that I'd been dying to try and I was so glad that my sister let me try on her wall.

We both learned quite a bit about painting a stencil by hand & we left tips and tricks on the original post so you won't make the same mistakes :)

#4 This is my favorite organization project of 2011.

This was not my original idea, so I can't take credit for that, but I sure love how nice thread organization can look with this lovely design. I've linked to my inspiration in my original post.

#5 This is my favorite gift project of 2011.

I wish this was my idea too, but yet again, I found the inspiration from Pinterest.

I just love the look and the message.

Mini Apple Pies

I saw the cutest mini pies on Pinterest & I knew I just had to make them.

My husband and I were invited to a Pie Night, so I thought that was the perfect opportunity to make these.

They were not that difficult to make, but the lattice did take some time.

I should have looked at my pin on Pinterest before I made these because then I wouldn't have tried to curl the edges.

I used two 9" refrigerated pie crusts & cut them using a circle cookie cutter.

Then I pressed them into my muffin tins.

Next, I filled them with apple pie filling.

And topped them with a lattice design. Don't look too closely at my messed up lattices :)

To make the pie top, I just cut another circle using my circle cutter & then sliced it into pieces to use for the lattice. I would suggest cutting the strips just the size of the pie & not trying to fold them into the bottom layer of crust.

And here they are--bite sized.

Candy Christmas Trees

This is what we did tonight as a family.

Instead of our gingerbread houses, we decided to make candy Christmas trees.

They were lots of fun to make and the prep was much easier.

Just buy ice cream cones, candy and icing and you're ready to go.

Hope you're all enjoying your Christmas traditions with your families too.

YW Christmas Gifts

This year for our YW Christmas gifts we decided to make these plaques.

I found this idea on the Internet which was my inspiration & when I did a Google search I found this design that I wanted to use.

One of our YW leaders, Rachel & her husband, cut all the wood boards & painted them.

She even distressed them--so awesome!

I found cute coordinating scrapbook cardstock & cut out the letters with my Cricut.
If you're interested in making your own, the font for the Be.tiful is Andalus & the font for you is Rage Italic. I also have the two files saved in Sure Cuts Alot. If you'd like the files, send me an email.

Then all us leaders got together and had a little Mod Podge party :)

I think they all turned out so cute & each one is different to show how we're all different yet beautiful when we are uniquely ourselves.

I found this story from the Dec. New Era LDS church magazine & used the following quote which I added to a tag to go with each plaque.

Celebrate the Sparkle of the Season - 5th Annual Girls' Night Cocoa Party

Every year for the last 4 years we've had a girls' night cocoa party & it's so much fun.

This year I wanted to do something a little different by also doing something for someone else, so I decided to do a canned food drive during our party. Along with the Evite I sent out I asked everyone to bring a non-perishable food item. Together we were able to collect 6 grocery bags stocked full of groceries to give a local family in need. It's such a great feeling to be able to give to others who are in need at this time of year.

That's my darling little niece, Creative Momma C's baby.

O Christmas Tree

I finally finished decorating my Christmas tree and thought I'd share pictures.

Don't mind some of the unlit lights. I spent a lot of time stringing lights on my pre-lit tree because many of the strands had stopped working & days after I got all the lights working and the decor on, some of the lights I strung on decided to go out. I didn't want to mess with it anymore & just decided to take pictures.

I guess that is the reality of dealing with Christmas tree lights :)
