Ta’leef Collective provides the space, content and companionship necessary for a healthy understanding, embrace and realization of Islam. It definitely has not been quiet at CM HQ…we’ve been busy putting together two unique publications for the DC MIST (Muslim Interscholastic Tournament) Community. Here’s a sneak preview of the front cover of the MNN that’s going out to the 500+ students participating this year. This “Mini” Magazine, which is how we at HQ refer to it as, was designed and digitally published by our staff. It’s completely done and is going out to the community this month. Our next big project on the agenda is the “Big” Magazine. During the actual MIST Conference we’re planning on creating and handing out a printed MNN publication! And if you think that will be easy because we’ve had practice doing a mini version, think again - we’re going from Publisher to InDesign and taking this to a whole new level. Stay tuned for more updates from the team!

Conceptualizing a New Web Look

To commemorate our one year anniversary, we re-designed several key elements of Creative Muslims.com and launched a new look during the last week of January. Here’s Part 1 of 3, an inside look on some of the big changes we made and the design process, written by our Founder (& Web Designer), Tubah.

Part 1 - Starting Out

Drafting up a new web design look is a lot of fun. When I initially started this project I knew several things for certain: Wordpress would be our main development platform, HTML and CSS would be the language to make a new look happen.

There are a few things I had to keep in mind 1) How much time could I put into this project? and 2) Was I looking to building a unique theme or customize an existing theme? After considering several options, the choice was clear. At this point in CM’s story we needed to stick with customizing an existing theme. We hope to have our own custom theme in the near future, but right now, working with what we have is the best way to try new things.

Surprisingly, at first I wasn’t entirely settled on sticking with our most recent theme and building off of it. I was looking for inspiration and turned to Practical Web Design (a magazine I highly recommend for all levels of web designers), Wordpress theme gallerys, and I even revisited our past.

When we first started out Creative Muslims, last January, we used a beautifully designed Wordpress Theme called Freemium (which is currently being updated to a newer version). Towards the end of last year, the look changed dramatically as we adopted Colorbold, an awesome theme by Site5.

Finally, in November of last year, I made some more changes and installed Simplo another superb theme from Site5 (see screenshot below).

Along with a new theme, I added a Thumbnail feature to make it easier for our readers to view our content, and social links to the top of the page.

(Ignore the plug-ins associated with the twitter and facebook buttons, we took this screenshot while changes for the new look were under development :))
