Almost fell into the water trying to get this shot but it was worth it.

Taken on my Nikon Coolpix Digital - no flash- macro.

Tips: Take a piece of plastic, or something to lie on to get different angle shots

If its windy take something to shield the flower and stop it waving around while you shoot - or take a friend to shield the wind

Just had to share with you this absolutely gorgeous Lotus about to burst into full bloom. I was just too late to catch the last blossom and the new buds aren't out yet. I feel like a voyeur about to pounce I have visited the dam so often to check progress so I don't miss the next buds opening. Check back to see if I have timed it right !

There is also a fabulous lily photo and a huge veined leaf of the Lotus that I nearly fell into the water to get but so worth it !

I still get excited to rind a new patch of rust in another form or object - look how this old rusty BBQ comes up to resemble floating islands in a turquoise sea !!!

Meet The Photographer

Greetings from Rural New Zealand

Thought you'd like to know a wee bit about me. I first became interested in photography back in the days of the box Brownie ! Yes, yes, I know, its a few decades ago. I can still remember going to the Zoo and trying to tilt that camera up at the right angle to get a photo of some very large brown bears and the angle of the sun kept hitting it so I either got the air and no bears or the bears in a small corner of the screen and when i tilted it back I couldn't see anything, the screen was bare ! By comparison, coming to grips with digital was a piece of cake.

Anyway, I digress ........ thank goodness things have moved on.

After a series of film camera of the point and shoot variety I decided it was time to get real and get a "proper" K1000 Pentax with a through the lens metering system. It was brilliant !! I took around a zillion photographs of waves on the beach at Great Barrier Island and I thought I had entered photographic heaven ! I can't tell you what a difference the camera made to my life.

Unfortunately, it didn't have the same effect on my pocket ! Film, remember .. ? Cost money, and the number of shots I took it cost some serious dosh !

Ever the optimist, I got into black and white with a slightly reduced budget now :)

That was worse as black and white cost more to develop :((

Solution ? Learn developing ! Naturally, so fiddling about in the darkroom trying to wind up film and haul it out of camera and into developing tanks , was a bit of a drama and it was becoming expensive getting the gear but THEN ..... magic happened ! I learnt enough to dip some photo paper into the developing trays and poke them about when suddenly the image started appearing through the fluid. I was sold ! I thought it incredible - still expensive, still a learning curve but wow ! it was worth it. Even with all those ruined clothes from the developing fluids and chemicals !

If I thought developing was super cool you can imagine what I thought when digital arrived !

What ? No film, no expense, no chemicals, no excitement though, not "real", bit like driving a car that wasn't manual, but I'll give it a go. Hooked of course ! Like you no doubt are fellow photographer, and to think we can edit and switch to black and white at the click of a mouse now.

It gives us control, the opportunity to be truly creative and to concentrate on the important things like being even more creative !

Follow up 3

Raining Cats and dogs today .....

Hello from New Zealand where it is raining cats and dogs today !

I was planning on going around outside photographing greenery - that's all wet - you'd think that was a no-no for photos but hey, no, there are some great amazing shots going out there, shiny, slippery, dripping with wetness and lusciousness. that's why New Zealand is so green, its all that rain. That's also why we have some amazing opportunities for moss, ferns, tree ferns and I am sure you have heard of the silver fern and I'm not talking netball here.

So, how do you get cool photos in the rain ? Same as you get them any other time - by watching, looking and keeping that "digi-eye'out that's how. One wee tip, less light so you might need to keep that shutter open longer so if it's very dark use a tripod. Yes, I know, its a fag to cart one around but worth it, definitely as it stops camera shake. Nothing worse than getting that perfect pic that would be totally amazing if you'd managed to keep the camera still.

I use a small monopod sometimes or make sure I can prop the edge of the camera up on a fence or post or something handy. Wet and wild can sometimes produce incredible shots but best of all is dew and moss

Black and White Photography

Black and white photography is timeless and where some of the most amazing images come from and shooting for black and white makes you think outside your usual boundaries without having a color reference frame.

Black and white images can be artistic, stark, evocative, atmospheric or textural and can convey mood and form with strong contrasts of light and shade and the strong shadow can enhance mood.

Black and white requires a very different mindset to color photography where color itself can define a shot and you may need to rethink how you see and frame up a possible subject with more concentration on texture and form, light and shade.

Monochrome photographs can be striking and dramatic with pattern, texture and contrast defining the mood and giving a depth and intensity that color can't even begin to compete. Look for strong form too - think of angular buildings and architectural shapes in strong shadow, the profile of a character portrait defined by strong shadow, and make sure the tonality is not all one shade of boring grey. Sculptural form can look pretty amazing in black and white - think textural plants, trees, and angular forms, jagged rocks, spiky cactus plants, repetitive patterns and think abstract for some incredible macro black and white images.

Experiment with some of your existing images on your computer and take a look at them in black and white in your editing program to get an idea of what sort of shot looks best in black and white before heading out into the field with your camera.

Digital Photography and the Light

Ever noticed the light ?
I mean really noticed the light.
How it changes constantly, how it shifts and moves, comes and goes ever so slightly.
How it slides to one side then the next in a subtle dance of light.
Because our eyes adjust to the light shifts automatically and instantly we don't even really notice it until we start to take photographs.

Ever start clicking and thinking you have the perfect shot and then take a look at the display to find you have a shadow over half of your photo that you didn't even spot when you took it ?

Digital will force you to take note !

You will suddenly become very aware of light shifts.

You need to be if you don't want to find all your photos have come out in various shades and depths of stripes :)

Once you take note of it it becomes pretty obvious but just try this as an experiment:

Place an object you want to photograph half in and half out of bright sunlight and click the shutter.
Check your display screen

What do you see ?
You will notice your photo is separated into two distinct halves, one very dark and one very light.
Now try this adding another shade source, like a window pane or plant and see where the light and shade start and finish.
Leave your subject in the same place and photograph it again in half an hour
Take another half hour later again and notice how the light has changed dramatically
Go on, do it now - you can always delete them, who will ever know you have taken such lousy shots, half black and the other half looking like a ghost has just been blasted through it.

You will notice in the photos above that light plays a big part, good and bad ! The top photo shows the distortion where the camera is too close to the lens but the composition is good and the light and shadow improves the photo and the second photo is completely ruined by the fall of the shadow and you will also see the power lines in this photo. OK, you can edit them out but why go to all that effort when if you walk around to the other side and wait for the shadow to shift you can get a far better shot.

Now you have lift off - the importance of where the light source is and where it highlights is one of the most important things to bear in mind if you want amazing and incredible photos.

Ask yourself where you want the light to come from, where you want it to reflect on your subject, what you want to highlight and what you want to overshadow and you will find it makes a huge difference to your photographs.

Imagine what these would look like if you took the shot of just the passionfruit vine with a flower in the corner ?

Wouldn't it lose its impact ? Would it look half as good as it does moving close in to take a macro image where the entire frame is filled with the flower ?

These photos were taken with the flash off and on macro setting - best to use a tripod unless your camera has a built in anti-shake or you have steady hands or take the photo

with your arms close to your body for extra support. Don't you think the second photo looks a bit like a lobster ? The beauty of macro is that you can take a small piece of something and

come up with a fantastic abstract image that is pure photo art. Give it a try. Look around for something you can photograph small parts of, or in a different way and see what you can come up with.

Delightful Chinese Silky Hen called Tiffany drinking out of the bird bath

Photographing pets is definitely where you need to be quick clicking the shot. Pets won't be waiting around while you compose your picture so its best to keep clicking and hope for the best. with this photo, the wee hen was quite dark and every time I tried to get her she disappeared into the shadows and all you could see was a blob. Now, I could have used a flash but that would have destroyed the subtle lighting effect of the light on her feathers so I have photographed her with the sun against her to bring out the feathery look to advantage. Because she kept darting around and didn't stay still at all I had to take quite a few photos to get this one that looks clearer and I managed to get this by finding a position where I thought she would look good and waiting until she showed up. Sometimes this can be quite a long time so have patience with pets. I have several pets who really like having their photos taken to the extent that they keep coming towards the camera !

Most digital cameras now have a setting for backlighting but sometimes this will destroy the effect too so experiment with other objects rather than miss a great shot of your precious pet. Feathers and fur usually look great against the light so use this to your advantage.

Black or dark pets are difficult to photograph as their eyes often seem to disappear into their heads and not show up. Try some sort of screen to bounce light off - a fence in the right place or the side of a white house will make a huge difference to the light and give an overall even light. I have a range of hens and poultry that I often photograph and the ginger hens come out looking great almost every time and the white hens look amazing but the black ones I feel a bit like a sleuth creeping around trying to get a good shot of them.

Tips:

leave the flash off,

experiment on times of the day when your pet shows up best in a photograph

experiment with other objects to get your lighting right

move close in to fill the entire frame to focus attention on your pet

Wanting something that is freely available, constantly changeable but can also be constant enough for you to take a heap of shots without it moving off on you at the crucial moment of pressing the shutter ? How about something that you can find in most kitchen drawers ? Aluminum foil - for a starting point just pull it out, scrunch it up and move around until you get a composition that looks amazing and start shooting. Turn your flash off or all you will get will be reflections of yourself ! Fine if you want a fuzzy photo of your own nose ! Then start adding and moving light, move it closer to the light source, away from it and use a tripod for best results - spot the photo above where there is camera shake to see the difference. Switch your camera to macro for extra good close ups and to avoid that fuzzy photo of your nose again :) Go experiment and while you are at it pull out a few of the other things in your kitchen drawer - you will be amazed at what has been lurking there all the while that will take amazing photos.

Rust, Dew and Picasso Influence

Who would think that old rusty hinges, dewdrops and a painting combo would add up to

an excitinjg image. Dont you just love those trapped wee leaf inside a dew droplet

on an Agave leaf ? Or the colours of the painting tee up with the rust ?

Believe it or not these images were photographed on a rusty old container !

I was pretty excited to discover that rust would would become a favourite photography

subject and how the flakes of deteriorating paint form mini images and collage like finished pieces

I originhally took these photographs as I thought they may make great absstract paintings but found they looked great by themselves and could start off a whole new direction _ imagine them edited in different ways, switched to seopia, black and white, use as ides for further rust explorations

Paint swirls and moving liquid in photography

Amazingly, this is an an image of a plain old can of paint captured after stirring like mad to get the colour to mix properly. It was quite old paint and had been sitting around for some time and I had a job to get the pigment to mix back in to a uniform colour when I suddenly realized what a great shot it might make and it did.

This has been edited to increase the saturation and I have played around to get it to display how I wanted and I really like the image as it reminds me of the swirls of life and it can be a mirror of the patterns of life. Hey, lets not get too deep here, just grab your camera and give it a go. Even old encrusted paint can be a hot topic for your macro shots and if you look around you will find heaps of things discarded that will make stunning photographs.

Other great ideas:

Look for floating oil on the top of water - or create your own

Try some marbling and photograph the results

Do some tie dyeing and use some of the finished samples for your photos

Mix up some paints on a palette and use this as a base to photograph

Slosh up some ingredients in the kitchen and photograph the results, like sauce, melted chocolate, soy sauce

Some Ideas to get you thinking :

Use as the basis for an abstract painting

Print out to cover journals

Use for fabric design,

Make your own cards, postcards

Enlarge and use each individual mosaic to paint something else in and then re-edit and transform again.

Use as a background for a piece of artwork

Print off for collage

Redo the colors for a new image

Overpaint the mosaic then rub out some areas for a distressed finish

use in "tile" sizes for sections of cubboard doors

The list goes on ...... :)

Wonderful Moss Garden - Natures Own Abstract Art

What do you all think of this as natures very own handiwork ?

This could almost have been duplicated in a tapestry or made into one of Kaffe Fassett's tapestrys or knitted works of art or painted into a giant artwork don't you think ?

This macro image was one of a very small clump of moss on a concrete step - just goes to show what can happen when you view things differently - we've probably all been just walking over these amazing shots and not giving them a second glance. Try looking at everyday things like moss, slimy gutter pipes, mould and rust through your macro lens and see what you can see.

Taken again with my trusty Nikon Coolpix of course ! On its macro setting.

Choosing a Camera - Is the Nikon Coolpix L22 12MP right for you ?

Quite a few of you have asked what camera gear I use and what is "the best."

There is not really any "best" as everyone is different and every situation is different and users are unique with unique preferences and unique requirements and it all depends on what you want to use your camera for.

I have gone through a few cameras and have come to the conclusion that its a trade off between lugging a lot of stuff around and having everything to hand ( and not being able to remember how to use it !) or having a basic click and point camera that does everything for you automatically but you don't have the options to change settings or lenses.

Digital makes everything far simpler and you can get a range of options and still have a camera that you can put in your pocket and just click and point or you can change settings for more individual uses without spending a fortune.

I am currently using a Nikon Coolpix and I find it suits what I want to use it for pretty good without having to car around a heap of gear. I use the Macro setting a lot, I can quickly switch the flash off or on - I mainly use the flash off. Since I am into more natural light shots and like atmospheric photography I rarely use backfill lighting and I like even more the serendipitous effects that just happen sometimes rather than take absolute perfect shots and being into art, I tend to go after art photographs rather than traditional or realistic photography.

Remember that a huge part of your photography starts with a creative concept and will most likely start with seeing like a photographer and having some idea in your minds eye and "just knowing" that whatever you choose will make a awesome shot so the best camera in the world won't help if you don't use it or don't get out and practice seeing what would make those fantastic shots. Once you train yourself and get the knack, practically any subject or topic will become the most fascinating source of inspiration, like the garden tools in the above shot.

I bought my Nikon Coolpix in a rush so didn't deliberate for a long time so I was probably quite lucky that I chose something that suited my mode of photography so well and lucky that I am still wrapped with what I can do with it.

I have others but this one I use most of the time as it is so quick and easy to use that I don't need to spend a heap of time fiddling around with the settings so I can concentrate on the creative side of things.

There is nothing that kills the creative urge faster than trying to fiddle out how to get your camera to work at all while your photo disappears with your frustration !

In conclusion, "the best" camera to get is one that does what YOU want it to do, ask yourself what you want to use it for and how often you will be using it, will you want a stack of fancy options when a simpler camera will do everything you want.

Quick tips on choosing a camera for you :

Get at least 12 megapixels or you will be kicking yourself later when you outgrow it.

I would recommend a macro function - you will be amazed at what you will shoot with it

Don't choose something too basic

Make sure you have a long battery life

Get a good size memory card or it will be frustration plus when you have to delete pictures to fit more on our in the field

How to Photograph Water Droplets

Today, I was going through some of my photo library - yes, the ones I can access and have saved correctly and came across this shot of droplets of dew again and decided to do a bit of surfing to see how others attack dew, water and water droplets.

If so this is a new and exciting way to take awesome pics that will have your friends and family talking! The best part you can do this at any time of year, time of day, and you don't have to leave your home to do it! I will show you how to photograph water droplets for some down right amazing pics!

Your hardest task is going to be timing! Your best method is going to be trial and error. It does take some practice. After about a dozen shots you will start getting in sync with your camera and your amazing pics will be proof!

The other way is to use a sounds activated
or motion device that will automatically make the flash units trigger with a ingrate beam when it becomes broken from the falling drop! They are fun to use and seem to be affordable!

Creating your shape

1. Crown shapes- you need to fill the receptacle with liquid to about 1 centimeter or less.

2. Column shapes, your are going to need to add a tad more liquid.

Plain water works best so no need to waste your time trying anything else. Its very cost effective and is also very reflective!

Backgrounds

Have fun with this there are several different ways you could take it.

1. Go all black with a beautiful wine glass as your reciprocal.

2. Use bright fun colors underneath your receptacle, it gives them a fun up beat effect!

3. Try placing some colorful stones in the bottom.

4. Wrapping paper works great, make sure you receptacle is in contrasting colors to really make it pop out at you.

You can also purchase some high gloss photos, but why pay when you can make your own!

Its your photograph customize it to your liking!

At about 120 degrees water drops will reflect a given area. Your background doesn't have to be huge since it is only going to be sitting about 3 inches behind the receptacle.

Start by mounting your camera on a tripod in front of your setup. Using your viewfinder, make sure you background color is reflecting strongly off the water. Try using a piece of magazine as a target to get your camera ready for focus. I stick with using an aperture of f/4-f/4.5 to make sure the depth of field is still keeping the drop sharp while still blurring the background.

Make sure your set up is well and equally lit, then dim the room lights. Set your shutter for about 3-5 seconds,

I have found that an eye dropper works best for making a drip.

Squeeze out a drip, and start by manually flashing, which will then cause all to fire in tandem. Then continue till you achieve your desired result!

I hope you now have learned how to photograph water droplets and are well on your way to making stunning pics to show to your family and friends!

How to Photograph Flowers -Digital Macro

Another favourite subject !! a flower is not going to take off mid photo !! still not idiot proof as I found trying to isolate one daisy from the mass of others, made a few shots before i found the caterpillars had muncherd a portion of the petals I had singled out then the wind sprung up.

\switch to macro

Try for a calm day without wind

Take time to compose your photograph -

Walk around for best vantage point or try crouching down and looking up for drooping flowers

Remember that caterpillars could be a great addition to your photograph !

Shoot early in the morning or later in the day

Avoid harsh light like midday sun or having said that I sometimjes like to or photograph with the sun "halowing' the flower you have chossen and you can get cool effects like the fine hairs on stems or thorns standing out proudly

Organizing Digital Photographs - Tips

Creatiiveness is almost always messy I have discovered.

People, for some reason seem to think that if you are a photographer you just click once and

there is the perfect shot, one time, one click, perfection ! No, no no, no !

Sometimes you need to shoot a stack of photos before you can even get a feel for your subject.

If you knew how many shots professional photographers take your hair wouldn't need hair gel !

Sometimes they take zillions, well, maybe a slight exaggeration :) but where do you put all these photos ?

Do NOT start off putting them anywhere because you don't have time or worse still in folders labelled something like "photos I don't have time to sort" or similar - dont laugh, I have seen this along with "pic's to deal with soon " or how about "photos I need to dump"

- why not just dump them, now, immediately ?

Sure anyone, if they apply themselves, can have a real tidy hard drive, everything organised, not a single file out of place but pick up a camera and start clicking away until you run out of steam and you will come back to find you have taken far too many shots to edit, sort, caption and put in folders where they can be found again !

At least if you want to eat, sleep and have a life !

SO, what is the point of this post then ? Get yourself a system !!

Its cool to take lots of photos - especially when you are learning and so you can compare various compositions, different light situations, what works and what doesn't, but can you find them all again when you want to ?

Tips to help you deal with that myriad of shots:

Dump the dead ones straight away - the shots that are fuzzy, out of focus, bad composition, anything you can't edit and make better

Take a set of related photos at one time

Take smaller "sets" often to make it easier to batch label and sort

Label them as soon as you are able to so they don't get "lost" in your hard drive

Sort, and label when you are not distracted doing multiple things at once

Keep your mind on the job when you organise your photos, editing is easier as there is always "undo"

Set up your photos and folders with names that are logical to you, yes, you, not "how it should be done"

Get some sort of filing system for your photos, no matter how basic it will help you find them again

Go through your collect and refresh your memory from time to time and ditch the dregs - you will see them differently when you look at a later date

Whatever you do, label them somehow so you can again find them and don't click off until you know you have put them "somewhere!"

More Everyday Shots - A New Perspective

More shots from the ladder :) Looking down on things sure can give you a new slant on things - check out what I spotted from above - I've walked past this golden mossy "sculpture" a stack of times but it looked different with the sunlight shining on it and the Bromeliad from above looked like a mini pond. Ask Frogs - they love them !

A Compost, the Garden, Photos and What is Art ?

One persons garbage equals someone else's fab photo

Today I was making a compost heap. Unexciting stuff for non gardeners I am sure but for photographers there is always the chance that something may just pop into view.

Under all that soil is a photo waiting to happen, the garden is full of photographic delights and even pruning gives a handle on a new viewpoint.

Take your ladder, pop it under the nearest tree. climb it, secateurs in hand. Voila ! You have a new perspective :))

Change your angle slightly and look across from the top of the tree - perhaps you spot a bird in range ? A nest with wee eggs in it perfectly placed for your camera to capture. A fab view of the corner of a building you haven't spotted before, a piece of moss or lichen ? The abstract angle between the leaves maybe ? But is it art ? Or is it a leaf ?

What determines what makes a great piece of photo art ?

Step outside your normal mindset and you will be amazed what you will come up with. Remember what happens when you are on holiday ? Everything seems to be a photo waiting to happen but did you ever think it may not be the new location, it may be that being removed from your normal reality, you perceive things differently and become more creatively inclined.

Usually, we are advised to avoid flashes of uncontrolled light across the subject but here you can see the huge difference it has made to the shot by leaving the rays of sun striking the flower across the petals. Take the sunlight away and the photo loses a lot of its impact instead of highlighting the dramatic effect of the sun across the landing area of the flower.

Give it a go in your own garden or visit a nearby park if you live in an apartment or someplace without flowers handy and you will be surprised at what you can come up with if you keep clicking and introducing a few strategic rays of sunlight. Try it also with the light from a hanging crystal to float the rainbows across your subject .
