Per me esistono dei committenti intelligenti e dei committenti cretini. Ho capito subito, per mia fortuna, che per lavorare bene devi lavorare con chi è più intelligente di te. Non importa che sia un editore o un imprenditore. Se lavori per uno stupido, fallirai. Le opere dei migliori pittori del Rinascimento sono state commissionate da papi intelligenti. Con i papi stupidi nessuno ha prodotto capolavori. Ognuno ha i clienti che si merita. Per esempio, io non mi sono quasi mai meritato di lavorare per le agenzie pubblicitarie. I pubblicitari non conoscono neanche la grafica. Pochissimi grafici sono interessanti nel mondo della pubblicità. Cerri, Max Huber, Milton Glaser non erano pubblicitari canonici: erano pubblicitari nella misura in cui sapevano che cos’era un’immagine. Peter Knapp era completo, così come Alan Fletcher, il fondatore di Pentagram. Noorda era un grande, Vignelli un po’ modaiolo. La disciplina di Müller-Brockmann, il rigore di Jörg Hamburger. Non ci sono più grafici di questo livello. La tipografia ormai va bene a prescindere, è tutto computerizzato, più grafici entrano più bestie si vedono, avanti, signori, venghino. Sul web dov’è la grafica? Pochissimi siti, tipo quello del “New York Times”, hanno un’idea grafica forte e consapevole. Ma sono eccezioni, è nostalgia. I grandi grafici erano artisti: Depero, Brodovitch, di cui Truman Capote diceva che è stato per la grafica ciò che Dom Pérignon è stato per lo champagne, e che è morto in miseria. Geni dello spazio. Il “Corriere” oggi è un disastro grafico, non c’è uno spazio giusto. Instagram è inguardabile. I grafici delle agenzie sono ignoranti: ignorano. Un’ignoranza totale.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Del tipo: “Fotografami con il grandangolo un dromedario contro un muro color indaco.” Mentre io sono un autore per conto mio, io offro arte applicata alle esigenze di un committente. &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Un giorno, dalla finestra del secondo piano, vidi entrare nel cortile una Ferrari rossa. Dall’abitacolo smontò un ragazzo. Salì, mi si presentò, mi disse che mi ammirava e che anche a lui sarebbe piaciuto fare il mio assistente. &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Fumetti, giornali porno, soprattutto riviste di viaggio. Un giorno arrivò nella mia casa di Milano, tirò fuori dalla sua cartella un grumo di pagine accartocciate, cominciai a guardarle e fra di esse c’era la foto di una mischia di rugby nel fango, dove i pantaloncini erano incollati al sedere dei giocatori, un ammasso di fondoschiena bagnati. In particolare, un rugbista, di spalle, aveva i pantaloncini appiccicatissimi, come cuciti a pelle; davano risalto alla linea tra le due chiappe. &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Dato che i crediti vengono riconosciuti a chi si occupa della distribuzione, è passato il messaggio che la campagna fosse loro. Naturalmente le cose non stanno così. Per intenderci, lo slogan più dissacrante che poi avrebbe partorito quell’agenzia sarebbe stato qualcosa come “O così o Pomì”. &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Lì mi resi definitivamente conto che la pubblicità non era solo pubblicità. Cioè, se sapevi farla, se capivi qual era il suo potenziale, con la pubblicità potevi raccontare il mondo, cambiare il mondo, forse più di quanto avresti potuto fare con il giornalismo. Le canzonette, come dicevo, le sentono tutti, le immagini le vedono tutti, le cinque parole di uno slogan le leggono tutti, e, quando canzonette e immagini e slogan sono consapevoli del proprio inevitabile contenuto ideologico, be’, c’è da divertirsi. &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

[...] Sembra folle, ripeto, ma il caso dei jeans “Jesus” è una spia di tutto questo. Coloro che hanno prodotto questi jeans e li hanno lanciati nel mercato, usando, per lo slogan di prammatica uno dei dieci Comandamenti, dimostrano – probabilmente con una certa mancanza di senso di colpa, cioè con l’incoscienza di chi non si pone più certi problemi – di essere già oltre la soglia entro cui si dispone la nostra forma di vita e il nostro orizzonte mentale. &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Andai alla libreria &lt;i&gt;Scribner&lt;/i&gt; qui accanto per prendere un libro sulla scrittura da inserire nei nostri programmi di formazione, ma trovai solo &lt;i&gt;Gli elementi di stile&lt;/i&gt; di E.B. White. Una guida classica, che però non trattava gli scritti che facevamo ogni giorno - promemoria, relazioni di conferenze, rapporti sulla concorrenza, raccomandazioni, eccetera -. Così ho redatto un documento che delineava le caratteristiche di questi scritti aziendali e l&#39;ho inviato ai migliori copy dell&#39;agenzia.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Le modifiche di Joel sono state di gran lunga le migliori. Ecco 10 suggerimenti: (1) Leggi il libro di Roman-Raphaelson sulla scrittura, leggilo tre volte”.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Il nostro piccolo opuscolo ebbe un tale successo che lo modificammo e lo ampliammo in un libro sulla scrittura aziendale in generale e trovammo un editore in Harper &amp;amp; Row. &lt;em&gt;Per me la svolta fu il successo del lancio di Olio Cuore, contro la
sua pretesa di risuscitare Olio Topazio. Eppure in fondo l’idea
vincente fu sua, discutendone per stroncare il mio piano. Disse:
«Cuore non si venderà mai su vasta scala, costa il doppio degli
altri!». E io: «Ottimo, mi hai dato la risposta!». Già, perché
quel prodotto –che aveva il nome più bello del mondo – era un
olio ideale per chi, avendo problemi cardiocircolatori, aveva bisogno
di una dieta leggerissima. Chiari però l’aveva posizionato, in
termini di marketing, troppo in alto, facendone veramente un olio per
malati, un parafarmaco. Era normale che vendesse poco: era anche
caro. Oltretutto, lo scandalo dell’olio di colza faceva sì che
molti associassero a qualcosa di pericoloso qualsiasi olio di semi.
Eppure io continuavo a credere alle potenzialità di Cuore, il
problema era riposizionarlo. Con la pubblicità, naturalmente. Come
fare? Chiamai la Young &amp;amp; Rubicam e diedi loro il classico
briefing sulla campagna pubblicitaria: «Voglio la
rappresentazione di una famiglia con marito, moglie – entrambi
giovani e belli – con due bambini e un cane, sì: anche un cane. Me
li immagino che corrono allegri su una spiaggia o fanno qualche altra
attività fisica dinamica e sportiva, poi arrivano felici e
sorridenti a tavola e dicono: “Be’, un po’ di ginnastica, un
po’ di aria pulita, un po’ di serenità e a tavola Olio Cuore per
mantenersi in forma”».&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;i&gt;
&lt;/i&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Fu un successo pazzesco. Gran parte del merito, oltre al concept,
spettò al testimonial, che indovinammo al 100%. Io credo molto
nell’importanza del testimonial, non ho mai lanciato un prodotto
senza questa figura, è una grande scorciatoia. Avvicinai la gente al
prodotto con la credibilità e la simpatia del suo testimonial, che
non ha che fare con gli attuali influencer del web: quelli fanno
recensioni, parlano al razionale. Il testimonial puro deve
emozionare. Cominciammo a cercare e facemmo alcuni tentativi inutili,
finché puntammo su Nino Castelnuovo, un attore che in quegli anni
era entrato nel cuore degli italiani, perché aveva interpretato
Renzo Tramaglino dei Promessi sposi televisivi di Sandro
Bolchi. Definiamo una scena, che comprende il famoso salto della
staccionata, con Nino che arriva a tavola, si siede e dice: «E a
tavola Olio Cuore, mangiar bene per sentirsi in forma».&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;i&gt;
&lt;/i&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;Non lo sapevamo, ma stavamo creando un pezzo dell’immaginario
collettivo degli italiani. Ci fu una grande discussione con la RAI,
che doveva sottoporre tutti gli spot alla censura della SACIS,
diretta da Zanacchi, il quale esercitava il controllo preventivo su
tutte le pubblicità televisive. La stessa censura che aveva portato
all’iniziale divieto della pubblicità del cibo per cani. Nel caso
dell’Olio Cuore, il grande dubbio con la RAI era se l’attore,
questa frase, dovesse proferirla prima di andare a tavola o dopo.
Perché, se l’avesse detta dopo, Nino Castelnuovo avrebbe
dimostrato che era stato l’Olio Cuore a farlo saltare così bene,
con un rapporto causa-effetto molto diretto e suggestionante…
Questioni di lana caprina. Sistemammo la faccenda discutendone
insistentemente e mandammo in onda lo spot che volevamo noi… Che
ebbe, ripeto, un successo pazzesco. L’Olio Cuore cominciò a
viaggiare su numerimolto alti, la società uscì dalle grane e in un
paio d’anni sistemammo tutti i problemi pregressi, passando dai
300.000 litri di prima a 38 milioni, cento volte tanto. Era come aver
