Reasons To Celebrate....

Good Morning Dear Friends...

It is a beautiful day here in Indiana.

The birds are singing and we have all the windows open.

Today I thought it might be nice to share some good things....

Making this a Thankful Thursday Post.

Like today is the last day of school for the girls....

And yesterday was hubby and I's 14th wedding anniversary.

(We spent the day together in Henderson, Ky shopping)

Big sister won most improved player last night at the Tennis Banquet.

(And our school girls softball team won sectional last night too!)

And this is something I don't normally talk about here...

but as of the last few weeks... I have lost 35 pounds

and three sizes on my diet/workout/new lifestyle plan!

I feel so much better.

Just eating healthy and moving more.

I felt like counting my blessings today.

Plenty Of Blooms To Go Around....

Hello dear friends!

Welcome to our country home.

Today I am sharing the roses, peonies and irises blooming at the front walk.

It is simply beautiful today after storms overnight.

Luckily we did not have any damage, but more rain and mud to deal with.

But the garden will enjoy the extra water come summer and the heat to come.

But for now we will enjoy these lovely May days.

I swear I could take pictures every day and not catch all that is blooming this week.

I am over the moon to see the roses blooming again.

These are pink double knockouts. I just love this picture.

Hope you have lots of pretty things blooming at your house as well!

Healing Time In The Garden...

May in a garden brings many things....

Lush textures....

Vibrant Colors...

Sweet scents....

All at once we burst into bloom....

There is so much at once we are surrounded by beauty.

The garden gives so much to our lives...

I hope you can take comfort and joy in your gardens....

In this sorrowful time.

Taking time out to remember the children, teachers,
families, friends, animals, emergency workers
and countless volunteers who have
been affected by the devastating tornado
in Moore, Oklahoma.
You are in our prayers.

Notes From A Country Garden - Mid-May Garden Tour

My Cottage Garden in FULL BLOOM!

It is balmy and grey this morning... but I just had to take

some pictures of the rose garden in bloom today.

Sorry a few of the pictures look a bit foggy,

my camera kept getting moisture on the lens.

Yes, it is that wet here.

Over 3 inches of rain this week and MUD!

I almost slid down the hill taking these.

But I just couldn't wait to show you all the color.

If you have ever wanted to come out here and see the garden,

this is the time.

Now thru the end of May will be fantastic for blooms.

My Cottage Style Rose Garden

Joyful Skies and Swingtown Irises

Rugosa Roses cover and hide my wing-walls.

Outta The Blue Rose in full Spring bloom.

This garden is three years old this Spring.

I added these tough rugosas because everything else would wash down the steep hill. There are five plants here and they are four years old.

Mix of lovely bearded irises.

Favorite Flowers - Purple Sensation Alliums

I couldn't let this week go by without sharing my alliums blooming!

The majority of them are along the front walk. But I now have them all around the house too.

They are great pops of color while we wait for the roses to open.

Two years ago I planted 50 Purple Sensation bulbs all along the walk.

I love their size and bright color.

They are easy to grow and come back a bit stronger every year.

Definitely worth adding to your gardens!

Favorite Flowers - Rose Barlow Columbine And Joyful Skies Irises

Two posts for you today!

These were so pretty blooming together I just had to share.

Rose Barlow Columbine is a favorite in my spring garden.

Easy to grow from seed and oh that lovely rose color goes with so many things.

But today I am loving it as a contrast to the blue irises.

This is Joyful Skies one of my all time favorites. It is just so bright and the perfect soft blue.

Babbling Brook Iris nearby. Very similar, but not as much white in this one.

Close up, so beautiful.

Okay, I have got to get ready for work and fix hubby something for lunch!

It all started with some yard sale fabric!

The girls and I love the bright colors.

And of course, by fabric has roses on it.... would you expect anything else?

The clematises are blooming on the railings.... I am so glad I added them there.

My planters are still small, but they will be lush in no time!

Spring Show At The Back Walk Garden...

Good Morning! I know, we have went from no posts in a week to several in a few days!

That is how it goes in this busy time of year!!

Here is the back walk area in bloom this week.... Enjoy!

Don't worry... there is tons of seed coming up in those empty looking spots!

Irises, alliums and lilacs.... oh my!

Soon the roses will be in bloom almost all the way up to our deck.

Island bed by the driveway.

Red and Yellow Tulips in Bloom.

Hostas and daylilies filling in nicely.

Still doing some Spring Clean Up in the garden... but popped in to share some pretty yellow and red tulips blooming! As you can see, I am in dire need of more mulch... so that is my chore for today! That as weeding... but I do finally have all my new plants in the ground! Yippeee!!!

Favorite Flowers - Double-Red Flowering Peach Tree

One of the most striking things in my Spring garden is the blooms of my Double-Red Peach Tree.

Double-Red Peach Tree

It is an ornamental peach, it does not set fruit.

Closeup of the blooms.

But it graces me with these beautiful rosy-pink blooms each spring.

It will be a small tree upon maturity. Under 15 feet tall and wide.

This is it's 3rd year in my garden and it has done very well despite last year's drought.

I did not notice any scent, but the beauty alone is worth adding it to your garden.

Early Spring Blooms in the West Facing Side of our Home.

I wanted to share the lovely blooms of a few of my shrubs and trees....

Bridal Wreath Spirea

Like my wonderful Bridal Wreath Spirea.... an old-fashioned favorite.

Magnolia

And my sweet little Jane Magnolia... you can see this from the dining room. Love that.

Side Garden Filling In Nicely.

Hopefully I will be able to work this afternoon and all day tomorrow in the garden!

Favorite Plants - Carol Mackie Dahpne

Today I wanted to share with you the beautiful blooms of my Carol Mackie Daphne shrub.

I called it 'Alba' yesterday on Facebook, but that is the other one I have with smaller blooms.

This is the first time my Carol Mackie has bloomed and I am delighted.

As you can see it is a smallish shrub now, but it will mature to about 3'.

Best of all, it is a pretty evergreen that looks good all year.

What's not to love?

Daphne x burkwoodii Carol Mackie

Type: Shrubs

Height: Short 2-3' (Plant 30" apart)

Bloom Time: Early Spring to Late Spring

Sun-Shade: Full Sun to Half Sun/ Half Shade

Zones: 5-8

Soil Condition: Normal, Acidic

Flower Color / Accent: Pink / Pink

Garland flowers are prized for their early spring bloom of exquisitely fragrant palest pink flowers in profusion. Must have good drainage. Good as a specimen plant, or in groups. Each leaf is perfectly edged in cream. As with all Daphnes, good drainage is essential.

Features to Note:

Deer Resistant

Winter Interest

Fragrant

Evergreen

For a sunny spot

General Information:

Daphne are exquisite in fragrance and appearance. Requires a well drained soil, and patience. Not a fast growing shrub, but so very worth the wait. Semi-evergreen, it may be evergreen in its southern most range.

Plant Care:

Best to leave unpruned. Grow in humus-rich well drained soil that does not dry out. Mulch to keep roots cool. Does not like to be moved once established. Avoid "wet feet".

Our last cold day? Maybe.....

As I write this the rain is tapping against my window....

Dang cold and wet Spring....

These photos are more from last night... after another rain shower.

Today's high is only to be in the low 50's and chance of frost tonight.

I am hoping it will be our last cold night.... fingers crossed.

Here is more from the back of our house...

It is filling in nicely and has many Spring blooming shrubs to enjoy.

One of my favorites this week is the Mohawk Viburnum.

You can smell it from up on the deck even.

The daffodils are just about done, but a few are still bloomings.

Flowering Almond is a pretty light pink.

The rain has beat off many of the blooms this year.

My irises have blooms forming, can't wait to show them to you in a few weeks.

The containers all wintered nicely.

These have Annabelle Hydrangeas and dianthus pinks in them this year.

A willow is in the background.

Hollyhocks, crepe myrtle, daylilies, anemone, peony, irises.... you name it... filling in nicely.

Again, I wish I had pictures with the sun out.... but it will be a few more days!

First Look At This Year's Rose Garden...

Let me apologize (again) for not posting as much as I usually do.

I tell you this working thing is rough! Its definitely cut into my garden time.

Not that there have been that many pretty days to garden so far.

It has been cold and rainy. We have gotten over 2 inches this week.

Yesterday was beautiful and I worked in the garden all day.

But wouldn't you know it, I did not take any pictures.

So even though it rained all afternoon.

I went out this evening to shoot these for you.

Hopefully in a few days I can catch a sunny day to photograph.

But it is only to be in the low 50 tomorrow and another chance of FROST!

I swear this has been the longest wait for warm weather....

Anyway... Welcome to the Rose Garden!

This is my little paradise outside our walkout basement....

I always wanted a picket fenced cottage garden... so this is a dream come true for me.

Complete with pink roses growing up the arbor...

I have lots of plants known for their scent in this area.... including 6 different lilacs.

Just in this area alone there are over 60 roses. (Grow well over 100 altogether!)

Last year was a difficult year for us. We had an extreme amount of drought. But my roses look very healthy this year. I am proud to say I did not lose any this winter!

I know it looks like a mess of metal... but in a few weeks there will be roses all the way to the top of my trellises. I need them for support for my many climbers.

Is there anything more pretty than new growth on roses?

I have a blue theme going on this early in the year.

I so wish these pics were brighter, but I could not wait any longer to share a post with you!

Spring Daffodil Parade!

Hello dear friends and Welcome to Spring in my Indiana Garden!

I am so sorry it has been so long since I have shared any new items.

All good thing, just busy with work and family.

Plus it has been so darn cold and late for the blooms this year.

So today I am sharing some of the beautiful daffodils blooming in my garden.

I apologize I do not have the names of the varieties I grow.

Many have been gifts from friends or mixed varieties I have purchased in bulk.

A number of my bulbs have came from Brent and Becky's Bulbs, so you might be able to contact them for the variety. They are all so pretty... Enjoy!!

I just love the green on this one, it is just stunning. It is 'Flower Parade'.

I love white daffodils, and this one might just be my favorite. I think it is 'Misty Glen'.

This one is ruffled like a daylily in the center, it is 'Bella Vista'.

Unknown peach and white one, but it is so delicate. Love the colors.

This bright yellow and white one is stunning... it is 'Solar Wind'.

This one is very vibrant, I believe it to be 'Yazz'.

I love the ones with multiple blooms on each stem.... they are called Tazettas.

Here you can see all the blooms they give at once! This one is called 'Geranium'.

A closer look at 'Geranium'.

Not sure the name of this last one.... it is a stunner! I think the center looks like a perfect hibiscus bloom.

Here is the butterfly hill in bloom today, the skies are cooler and cloudy.

We will have a few warmer days, and then cool again this weekend.

I have more pretty things to share. Hopefully I won't wait so long so show them!
