AirDroid is completely free; it doesn’t even contain ads. It functions as a web server, allowing your Android device and your computer to communicate over the network.

Getting Started

AirDroid is available for free from the Android Market. It supports Android 2.1 and later. Android 4.0 isn’t as well supported at the moment, but AirDroid should update with improved support soon.
Launch the AirDroid app once it’s installed and tap Start to start the AirDroid server.

AirDroid tells you exactly what to do — plug the IP address into your web browser’s address bar.

You’ll see a login page. Use the code from your Android to log in. This prevents unauthorized access to your device.

If you don’t see a login page, your Android device and computer are probably on different networks. They must be on the same network to connect. If your computer is connected via a wired connection, it’s possible the Wi-Fi network and wired network are isolated from each other.

AirDroid’s Home Screen

Run the command mode of Windows (Start / Run)
Run the policy editor with the command "gpedit.msc"
Select "User Templates" in the "User Configuration"
Click on "System"
Select "Ctrl + Alt + Del Options"
In the right pane, double-click "Remove Task Manager"
In the settings, select the option "Not Configured", then (apply ok.

If its not working select the "Disabled" option instead of the "Not configured" one, then click on Apply.
Try it again, it the Task manager is enabled then set bact the "Not configured" option.

[Windows XP] C:\Windows\System32\Config\System is corrupt

Your Windows operating system is not able to start because the file, [Windows XP] C:\Windows\System32\Config\System is missing or corrupt which indicates that the system registry hive is corrupted. To have it back up and running, during the start of the boot sequence you have to press the F8 key which takes you to a menu. Choose Boot using the last known good configuration option that loaded Windows XP operating system with the previous configuration files. The other way is to boot the system with the Windows XP Installation CD. Once you are in setup, start the Recovery Console. Type in the appropriate commands and press enter after every line. Also change the C letter in the commands with the drive letter for your Windows XP operating system.

Solution

It is possible to fix this via the registry by modifying the following key.

One more virus but bit dangerous..... ;)

This is a deadly virus that modifies registry so much that the user can't run any exe, bat, ini, inf, reg files anymore.
Disables ALL .exe files on computer including regedit, cmd, taskmgr etc.
Deletes restore settings.
Modifies files of LastKnownGood Configuration, changes System Folder & Windows folder so it will be much worse to start with LastKnownGood configurations to repair virii.

Modifies usb mass storage drivers and usb driver to make sure that the user can't backup his data, disables access to new usb drivers. Infact USB absolutely don't work in Win 7.
Windows can't be reinstalled because it gives error "rundll32.exe" can't be opened. HDD should be formatted first to install windows.
4KB and almost undetectable because it just modifies the registry badly and leave no other traces on the computer. (Antivirus detects absolutely nothing after the virus execution)
BUT.... every blocked file can be opened with some trick. (Hint : The user can not directly access them but the files can!
In simple words it makes the windows unusable but has no effect on one's data.

Tested in Win XP, win 7 (Comparitively less effective in Windows 7)

This guide is intended to provide a simple tutorial for the installation and setup of Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE].

To download the program, follow the link above and click the Downloadimage. You will be greeted with the following box:

How To Keep Your Computer Up To Date With Secunia PSI

In this tutorial we will be looking at Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) which is a free security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. The program will also update your Java, Flash and Windows Updates along with the other programs that you have downloaded. Please note that for this tutorial I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

This program is for Windows only and on the following Operating Systems. There are no hardware requirements:-

Microsoft Windows 7 (x86 and x64)
Microsoft Windows Vista SP 1 or later (x86 and x64)
Microsoft Windows XP – SP 3 (x32)

So, let’s go ahead and start by downloading the program and running it. You can download Secunia PSI here. Once you have downloaded it, double click it to start the installation process.

Once you start the installation, you will come to the first window

Click Next to agree to their Licencing terms and continue

In the next window, you are given the option to allow Secunia PSI to update automatically any programs that it finds that are out-dated (top check box), and also given the choice to have the program confirm with the user (you) as to whether you want the specific update that it finds (second check box). For peace of mind and security purposes, it’s a good idea to check the first one at least, and if like me you like to have as close to 100% control over what happens on your system, you should probably check the second one too.

In the next window you are given the choice to have Secunia PSI tell you via a balloon notification on the tray icon what program changes and/or updates have been made. For quick reference, this is a good thing as I can be getting on with my work and also be informed of what has been updated.

The next window is just a welcome window and ReadMe telling you about the program, click Next

In the next window you get to choose where you want the program installed. Most users will choose the default location (C:\Program Files) Click Next

You will next be shown the Finished window followed by the program asking you if you want to start the program as well. Click Finish and Yes to carry on.

Once you have clicked Yes, the program will open its main window with a small message about the program. Read it and then click Close at the bottom of the window and Secunia PSI will begin its first scan.

You will also notice that Secunia PSI has added an icon to your system tray at the bottom. It should appear on the far left

Once the scan has finished, you are presented with a score out of 100% on how up to date your programs are and what programs require updating.

To see the results in full, click on Scan Results on the left which will present you with a window where you can approve the updates (remember I checked the box to do this during the install)

Now if you wish to view more information on the particular update, click on the + next to the program to expand it, or just click on Approve Update on the right, and Secunia PSI will update them for you. Once you have updated these you should have a score of 100% when scanned again. Try to remember that programs deliver updates at different times and frequencies, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the program, although it is a fairly good set-and-forget program.

Now let’s take a look at some of the settings. These are pretty straight forward. To see these, click on Settings on the left of the main window

The first one is called PSI Settings and has seven check boxes, five of which are checked by default as shown in the picture below. Personally, I leave them as they are.

The next tab is the Ignore Rules. This is where you can tell the program not to update a certain program for you. There can be a few reasons why you don’t want to have Secunia PSI try to locate an update including, preferring the version of a program that you are currently running and dislike the latest version, or knowing that the program is no longer maintained, so don’t wish it to be checked. Remember though, that if the program is still being maintained, then there may be some security risks should you choose not to update it.

There are two ways to create an ignore rule; firstly you can do it via the settings menu, click the Ignore Rules tab, and then click on Create Ignore Rule, just below the tab. You can input your Rule Name here as well as the Rule Path (target path for your program) and click OK.

The other way to do it, is to go to your scan results and locate the program, and then click the + next to it to expand the details. Below Detected Instances, under the program that you wish to create an Ignore Rule for, click on the yellow folder with the red circle on it. Once you click on this, you will see that Secunia PSI will automatically create the Rule Name and Rule Path for you. As you can see in the image below, I created one for Adobe Bridge CS5. I’ll actually change this back as it’s important to me to have the program fully up to date, but I though I’d show you the different ways to do it.

The next tab in the Settings window, is which drives you want Secunia PSI to look at. I have just chosen to keep the default settings which is my main drive C:

The final window is the PSI API Token window. This is where app developers can interact with scan results/history. If you wish to know more about this and you wish to develop your own app for the program, then you can view the PDF regarding this, here.

That’s pretty much it. Now when you next open up Secunia PSI you will see that your main window has changed and will display your past results and history.

You will also see the tray notifications from time to time, alerting you to the fact that the program has detected an update and has applied it for you, or that user interaction is required.

Avira AntiVir Personal is a freeware antivirus program offered by Avira. Whilst this lacks the full functionality of the paid version, this is an excellent free antivirus that gives excellent protection.

To install, download the executable file from here:

Double click on the downloaded installation file to begin the installation.

Avira AntiVir Personal will now begin the installation. It may take several minutes for the installation wizard to begin.

By default Windows Defender may be enabled on your system and it’s recommended to disable this before you continue. During installation the above image will appear in Windows 7; similar messages may appear for other security programs, and on other versions of Windows.

Click OK to continue.

Click Next to continue.

The License Agreement will now be displayed. Once you are satisfied, check the tickbox and click Next to continue.

The confirmation screen will now display. Click on the checkbox to confirm.

Please click Next to continue.

As the default, Avira will perform an Express installation. This will install the standard features, and is recommended if you intend to use Avira as a real time security program.

If you wish to install only certain features of Avira, please change the selection to Custom.

I recommend ticking the checkbox to create a system restore point before installation.

Click Next to continue.

Avira will now display an optional registration page. If you do not wish to register, untick the checkbox.

Avira will now begin to extract and install. This may take several minutes to complete.

Once completed, the above window will display. Click Finish to exit the installation wizard.

Avira will now automatically update. Please do not skip this step as it’s important to keep your anti-virus up to date.

Once updated, Avira will automatically begin a short scan. I recommend you allow this scan to complete, as it should not take long.

Congratulations, Avira is now successfully installed and protecting your computer. You may find Avira will prompt you to purchase the paid version of its antivirus software. These prompts can be easily closed by clicking theClose button displayed at the bottom.

Avira will not automatically open after installation, but will immediately begin protecting your computer. To open the main Avira screen, right click on the umbrella icon in the system tray, and select Start AntiVir.

The following screen will be displayed:

This screen will display the main information about the program. If you wish to change any settings, selectConfiguration.

To access a scan report, ensure the Overview tab is selected, and select Reports. A list of scan logs will then be displayed.

Avira also offers a variety of custom scanning options.

To begin a scan, click on the Local protection tab, and select Scanner. A list of scan profiles will then be displayed.

Local Drives – This profile will scan all drives attached to the computer, including CD-ROM drives and USB sticks.

Local Hard Disks – This profile will scan all attached Hard Drives.

Removable Drives – This option will scan all removable drives attached to the computer. (Aka, USB sticks, CD-ROM drives, Floppy Discs etc)

Windows System Directory – This is a shorter profile option that will only scan the system32 directory.

Complete System Scan – This scan will perform a complete system scan.

Quick System Scan – This profile is a shorter scan, that will search crucial files and folders where malware is commonly found.

My Documents – This profile will scan the entire My Documents folder.

Active Processes – This profile scans all currently running processes for malware.

Scan for Rootkits and active malware – This option will scan specifically for rootkits, as well as scanning all active processes. Clicking the plus symbol will allow you to specifically select a hard disk to scan.

Manual Selection – This option allows you to selectively scan specific areas. Click the plus option to select the areas you wish to scan.

To begin a scan, select the profile you wish to scan with and select either the Scan icon, or the Scan as Administrator icon at the top of the window.

After Avira has been installed, you may find that Avira will prompt you to install a “Safe Search” function. This will also activate the Avira WebGuard component, which provides safer surfing online.

Clicking Install Now will begin the installation process for this feature. The Avira SearchFree Toolbar is a new feature offered by Avira; this uses the third party Ask Toolbar. By installing this feature, you are agreeing to the Ask Toolbar terms and conditions.

Please note: Avira require this toolbar to be installed to activate the WebGuard component. Uninstalling or disabling the toolbar, will also disable the WebGuard feature offered by Avira.

Detections:

If the following screen is displayed, Malware has been detected by Avira. Click Remove to open the window shown in Figure 17.

The default action will be displayed under Action. If you wish to change the selected action, right click on the default action, and select the required action from the drop down menu that appears. If you are unsure whether the file should be removed, check Copy file to quarantine before action. This option will be greyed out if Move to quarantine is the default action.

Click Apply now to carry out the intended action.

Quarantined files can be accessed by clicking on the Administration tab and selecting Quarantine.

It’s always recommended that you keep your antivirus up to date. Avira should automatically schedule updates, but if it doesn’t you can click Start Update from the status screen.

Remember that your AV program should never be your first line of defence. Always think carefully before downloading files from an unknown source.

How to Sync your Gmail to Outlook 2007 for Personal or Home Use

There are a few reasons why you may want to do this, but my main reason would be to back up my Gmail emails just in case I ever delete something important, Gmail servers go down (rare, but it happens) or as happened on the weekend of February 27 2011, when about 150,000 Gmail users woke up to find that all of their emails had been deleted by a glitch by Google (luckily Google have multiple redundant backups). It also happened way back on 22 December 2006. The latest glitch has now been resolved, but it does serve as a wake-up call to people relying too much on web-based email. I still prefer it to an actual desktop client though and to be honest, Gmail is by far the best one out there.

Right, let’s sync our Gmail to Outlook (2007 in my case); bear in mind though that if you have a lot of emails in your Gmail account (my main one is approaching 41,000 in the Inbox alone) this will require quite a bit of space on your computer’s hard drive as this sync will also include any attachments those emails have.

I assume that you have:

A Gmail account (IMAP should be enabled in Gmail settings as it is disabled by default)
Outlook 2007 (or similar) on your computer

By default when you first access your Forwarding and POP/IMAP settings area in Gmail you will see that it is set up so:

First, you need to Enable IMAP. When you check this, you will notice a few more options are given to you. You don’t have to touch these, so leave them alone.

Now in the POP Download section above IMAP Access, you are given two options. The first is the one that you should choose if you wish to sync (download) all of your Gmail’s from Day 1.

Enable POP for all mail (even mail that’s already been downloaded)

If however, you have already done a sync before and are doing it again on a new computer and you already have the emails synced (copied) or just want the latest ones, then choose the second option which will only sync your Gmail from now on.

Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on

Once you have decided which settings are correct for you, we can move on to setting up Outlook.

I will first show you how to do this when you haven’t already configured your Outlook account on your PC.

First, open Outlook (Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office>Microsoft Office>Outlook 2007) and you will see the following window:

Click Next for the next window:

Select Yes and Next

Personally, I prefer to configure things manually. This way I know that it’s done correctly. So check the box at the bottom (this will grey all the other information out) and click Next

Select the first option Internet Email and then Next

You can see from my example above how to input your details. Make everything the same except:

Your Name
Email Address (x2)

Now click More Settings for the Outgoing Server settings and Port settings:

Under the Outgoing Server tab check the top box and the Use same settings as my incoming mail server then go to the Advanced tab

There are four things you need to do here:

Incoming Server (POP3) 995
Outgoing Server (SMTP) 587
Check the box This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)
Encryption Type – TLS

Next click OK

Click the Test Account Settings and hopefully you will have now correctly configured your Gmail to your Outlook account. Now in your Outlook program click Send/Receive (Tools>Send/Receive) or just F9 and your Gmail emails will start to pour in. This may take a while depending on how many emails you have in your Gmail account.

Outlook will also ask you about calender settings and RSS feeds. For myself, I just ignored these as I am only interested in using Outlook as a backup for my Gmails.

Select No to this unless you want Outlook to be your default email program. If you want Gmail to be the default mailto: then please see my other tutorial on doing that here.

The other window will be the RSS Feeds one. It’s up to you if you want to have these synchronised as well:

Now let’s take a look how to achieve this when you have already got an Outlook account configured on your computer:

In Outlook go Tools>Account Settings and click New which will bring up the following window:

Which will present the next window:

Select the first choice and click Next

Now you should be in familiar territory as it’s exactly the same as above from now on as you will see this window:

Again, select the Manually configure settings box at the bottom and click Next

You can see from my example above how to input your details. Make everything the same except:

Your Name
Email Address (x2)

Now click More Settings for the Outgoing Server settings and Port settings:

Under the Outgoing Server tab check the top box and the Use same settings as my incoming mail server then go to the Advanced tab

There are four things you need to do here:

Outgoing Server (SMTP) 587

Next click OK

You have now correctly configured your Gmail to your Outlook account. Now in your Outlook program clickSend/Receive (Tools>Send/Receive) or just F9 and your Gmail emails will start to pour in. This may take a while depending on how many emails you have in your Gmail account. You will also see the following window. This one will show as your emails pour in. It is letting you know that some of the emails being synced have been marked as ‘Junk’. You can click on the Junk email options to make the rules stricter if you wish.

That’s it you’re done!

Please note that if you use 2-Step Verification on your Google account, then you will be unable to Send/ Receive in Outlook until you add the required verification code.

How To Join 001 Files

Normally when you download a file that has been split into multiple compressed files (archives), you simply have to right click on the first numbered file, (typically .r00, .r01, .r02 etc) with a program like WinRAR and choose Extract Here. However, every now and then you are going to come across a file that you have downloaded, that has been split into multiple archives and your normal way of joining them, like using WinRAR won’t work. For this tutorial I will show you two easy ways using eitherHJSplit or 7Zip of joining these files.

First we’ll look at a program called HJSplit. This is a great bit of Freeware and can be used on the Windows, Linux, MAC ,BSD, Java, PHP, Amiga, Windows 3.x, DOS and OS/2 platforms.

If you have downloaded these types of files, they may look similar to the image below. So lets get them joined so you can start to watch your file.

Once you have downloaded HJSplit, open it up and you will see the first window:

Now just click on Join and you will get the next window:

Click Input File and navigate to the folder where the split files are:

Click to highlight the file (note you will only see the first file which will end in 001) and then click Open which will bring you back to the joining screen

As you can see, it will automatically place the soon to be joined files into the same folder, but you can change the output location if you wish. Now just press Start and it will join all the files together

Once it’s finished you will see the following screen

That’s it.

Next we will look at how to do this using 7Zip

This is another fantastic piece of freeware that I would definitely advise you having for all your zipping/joining and file (not system) encryption needs. The compression methods of this program are also a lot better that most, if not all of the paid for ones out there as well. First, go to their site and download the program. Once you have done that, you will notice that it has been added to your right click context menu. Now, go to the folder where your split 001, 002, 003 etc files are located. Now just right click on the 001 file as shown below and select 7-zip>Extract Here

The program will automatically place the joined file in the same location. Whilst the program is joining the files, you will see the following window:

Once it has finished your newly joined file will be there, ready to play. You will know that the operation has finished by the window above closing

That’s it, you’re done!

I was using Window 7 Ultimate x64 in both of these examples for those interested.

How to Run Old Versions Of Software in Windows 7 Using Program Compatibility Mode

Most programs are designed for a specific operating system. This means that the software you bought in 2002 for a Windows XP PC probably won’t run in 2011 with your brand new laptoprunning Windows 7. But with Windows 7’s Program Compatibility Mode, running that old software on your new computer might not be so impossible.

Note: Program Compatibility Mode will work with various releases of Windows, all the way back to Windows 95!

I know there are a few games for Windows 2000 that I wish I could revisit. Alas, those ROMS are long gone, but if you are also still holding onto some precious software heirlooms then you just might be in luck.

Running Software in Program Compatibility Mode

I am going to walkthrough how to make older software run after an OS update, say Vista to 7 or XP to Vista.

Step 1: If you find that one of your programs is not working properly, right click on it and select Troubleshoot Compatibility.

Step 2: Your next step should always be to try the recommended settings suggested by Windows.

Step 3: You can then begin a test run of the program using the recommended settings and see if it is fixed or not.

Step 4: If it worked, you have the option to save the settings so that they will apply every time that you launch it.

Step 5: If it didn’t, do not give up yet. You can also try to fix it on your own!

Selecting No, try again using different settings will bring up the manual troubleshooting menu, where you can input your own experiences with your troubled program.

You can also start with manual options at the beginning of troubleshooting by choosingTroubleshoot Program at the first menu.

Step 6: Now you have the chance to specify the problems that you notice when trying to run the program.

Step 7: The contents of the next window will depend on what options you chose in the previous dialogue. They are merely a line of more specific questions to help identify the exact problem that you are having.

For instance, if you chose The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won’t install or run now then you will be greeted by the following message.

In this example, it shows a variety of different display problems you could be having.

Step 8: Once again, it is time to run the program and see if the settings have fixed the problem.

Step 9: If you still find yourself with a broken piece of software then you should send a generated problem report to Microsoft to make them aware of the problem.

Manually Select Program Compatibility

If you know what version of Windows that your program once worked in then you can skip all of the troubleshooting and just jump right into things.

Step 1: Right-click the program and choose Properties to open up another menu where you will select the Compatibility tab.

Step 2: Within the Compatibility tab, check the box beside Run this program in compatibility mode for:.

Step 3: From the drop-down list, choose the version of Windows that your program worked best on. Click Apply, and the settings will be saved for the next time that you run the program.

If all of the above tools do not help, don’t forget that Google is your best friend. Sometimes a simple search in Google, describing your problem, can lead to a forum, which leads to a post, leading to another post, that all ends in a solution to your problem. Or, if you already know a good forum, try using Blekko to customize your search results.

Analyze Windows Blue Screen Errors with WhoCrashed

There are times when Windows hangs without warning, and the resulting error message is too complicated to understand. WhoCrashed is a simple application that tells you why the crash occurred, so you can fix the problem.

Whenever Windows encounters a critical system error, it crashes and forces the user to restart the computer. Previously, these errors used to be displayed on a blue background, leading to the name "Blue Screen Errors" (or the blue screen of death as they are infamously known).

Quite often, these errors are caused by missing, corrupt or incompatible drivers for your computer hardware that create problem in the smooth running of your operating system. Because the situation is critical, Windows cannot display detailed information on the error and hence the cause has to be determined when the computer has been rebooted.

To help with analysis, the moment it encounters a system error, Windows copies all files in memory into a folder called the ‘crash dump’ (or mini dump). This is what WhoCrashed analyzes.

WhoCrashed is free and simple to use. It requires administrator privileges and with one click it analyses your crash dump files and displays the result.

The program is fast and straightforward. It displays the result in the same window with detailed information on the origin and probable reason for the crash. Each entry has detailed information on when your computer crashed, to allow you to pinpoint the reasons for the same.

Once you know the source (for example, in the above screenshot you can see it is the graphics card driver), you can update or reinstall the driver to fix the problem.

If you do not have crash dumps on your computer and you still experience system crashes, it can also give you pointers on the reasons for the same. For example, your crash could be caused by an overheating CPU or a failure in your power supply.

If all else fails, WhoCrashed also allows you to contact the makers for further support on the problem.

Change the Default Location for Installing Programs

XP uses the C:/Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/or directory by using a Registry hack. Run the

Registry Editor and go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion
Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. By default, the value will be C:/Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive
or folder; XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.
