The Demon Show will mark Chet Zar’s third solo show at the gallery, and the latest solo show since All Hallow’s Eve at Copro Gallery in October 2014. The Demon Show serves as a continuation of the subject matter Zar is known for, atramentous expressions of the human condition. In Dark Night of the Soul, Worth explores the act of transformation through suffering in a series of fifteen oil paintings. Inspired by both the Occult and female experience, the artist utilizes meticulous layering techniques to craft scenes from fairytales gone awry, swirling seamlessly between the sweet and surreal and inevitably dipping into the valley of the morbid. Her work is deeply personal often depicting imagery that is both familiar and enigmatic and draws deeply on the symbolic power of rebirth. Through this iconography, the artist aesthetically documents a philosophical crisis arising from tragedy while simultaneously taking the viewer on a visual journey involving injury, loss, tragedy, and how these things affect us in the end.

The current exhibition continues Worth’s exploration of her own knowledge and experiences through the act of creation. Dark Night of the Soul touches on the idea of being wounded and the ability of tragedy to turn you into a different person than you previously were. The acts of mourning and survival are intimate experience and different for each person who has

The book is 292-pages, 12½″H × 9½″W with a clothbound hardcover. It will be printed on FSC-certified paper and bound domestically in the USA. There are 3 editions available for pre-order. The First Edition, which is limited to 3,000 copies, the Box Edition which is limited to 250 copies and comes with a letterpress print created exclusively for the release (seen above), and finally an Art Edition which is limited to 5 copies and comes with not only the letterpress but also an original sketch inside the book.

Social media has also been very active not only posting quotes by “Charb”, but also cartoons and works of art created in response to the attack. Upper Playground published a post sharing cartoons as well as images of demonstrations in Paris. “Je Suis Charlie” (I Am Charlie) and Not Afraid can be be seen on signs and shirts. Booooooom also has a post with art created in response, and Slate has a short rundown explaining some of the magazine’s controversial covers.

As an intense lover of art, I am always aware of the idea of censorship, as are most artists, writers, directors, and so on. We don’t have to agree with everything, some things will always offend, and this idea (to me) is what creates discourse. It challenges our beliefs, strengthens our convictions, and allow us all to express the important concept of freedom of expression. It may seem contradictory to the art that I share and research, but there are works of art that offend me. However, that is ok. Art and ideals do not have to please everyone. As Evelyn Beatrice Hall wrote in The Friends of Voltaire, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”.
