Blog

Dear Readers,
In the last few weeks I have had a number of people ask me if I had recommendations about movies they should watch and then my good friend Jenny suggested that I make a blog to share my recommendations with friends. Seeing as how I already have a blog that I never use, I thought I might as well turn this one into a blog where I can recommend films that I have seen. I am not sure how I will format it yet, but watch for new changes to this blog. And if you have recommendations, please post!

Thanks,

Crescent

KPFA workers under attack -facts and news

As a long-time listener to KPFA (94.1 in Berkeley), the FIRST free speech radio station in the country, I am very worried about its fate. The staff of the popular and important "Morning Show" was laid-off and now many of the local programs are also facing extinction. I am particularly worried about "Hard Knock Radio" and "Full Circle." "Hard Knock Radio" is a show that features hip hop culture and political/social justice issues. I believe it is the only one of its kind in the world. They feature stories you will not hear anywhere else. "Full Circle" is the show produced by the KPFA Apprenticeship program, where women and people of color are trained to produce radio shows, in an effort to train people who are usually not encouraged or given access in this field. Today I will be going to a rally in support of these shows and other locally produced programming and I plan to post the video that I shoot. Here are some facts from the website: http://www.kpfaworker.org

After a year of cuts at KPFA, Pacifica is proposing to slash one-quarter of KPFA’s remaining workforce.

WHAT KPFA’S WORKERS WANT
• PUT RADIO FIRST. Pacifica’s budgets should cut bureaucratic overhead, not programs KPFA’s listeners count on.
• LOCAL CONTROL. Stop sidelining KPFA’s elected Local Station Board and local management in the budgetdrafting
process.
• NO POLITICAL PURGES. Three Pacifica board members drew up a name-by-name list of workers to fire that targeted
those who didn’t endorse their election slate – they have no business interfering in KPFA’s union contract.
• PRESERVE LOCAL PROGRAMMING. Stop all attempts to replace community-driven programs with syndicated
content.
HOW PACIFICA HAS RESPONDED
The SUSTAINABLE BUDGET measures proposed by KPFA’s staff union have been endorsed by both KPFA’s local management
and its elected Local Station Board. But they’ve been dismissed by Pacifica National.
• In a meeting with union representatives, Pacifica executive director Arlene Engelhardt declined to even support
the union’s proposals in principle. She also refused to propose any of her own alternatives to layoffs.
• Engelhardt said in an on-air interview on October 26 that she thought KPFA had abandoned its “foundation” of
“volunteerism.” But at KPFA, the vast majority of shows are volunteer driven - only 8 of 65 shows have paid hosts.
• In the same interview, Engelhardt refused to disclose what she earns. So did Pacifica’s chief financial officer, La-
Varn Williams.
• LaVarn Williams rejected a proposal from KPFA union members who volunteered to switch to a cheaper healthcare
plan – apparently, she’d rather lay them off!
• After committing on-air to meet with KPFA’s staff to discuss cuts, Arlene Engelhardt hasn’t responded to email
from KPFA’s shop stewards to set up that meeting.
HOW MUCH IS PACIFICA TAKING FROM KPFA?
• The latest version of KPFA’s budget would have KPFA paying Pacifica National $810,000 in fiscal year 2011. That’s
over 22% of KPFA’s projected revenues – nearly twice the amount Pacifica is forcing KPFA to cut.
• KPFA also gives Pacifica free rent in a KPFA-owned building, maintains Pacifica’s satellite distribution system, foots
the cost of syndicated programs like “Letters to Washington” and the Pacifica Evening News, which other Pacifica
stations broadcast for free, and provides free production space and studio time to national programs like Free
Speech Radio News. KPFA pays the costs; Pacifica pockets the fees from affiliate stations.
CONTINUED ON REVERSE >
WHAT PACIFICA SPENDS OUR MONEY ON
• Pacifica’s last financial audit reports that 52% of spending by the Pacifica National Office was classified as
“Management/General.” In the same time period, KPFA only spent 17% of its money on “Management/General.”
• Pacifica is on track, in one year, to spend $112,000 on meetings of its national board; $50,000 for board’s
consultations with attorneys, $150,000 on board elections, and tens of thousands more on a lawsuit brought
by boardmembers over board elections.
KPFA raises enough money to pay our own expenses, but it
doesn’t raise enough to pay for Pacifica’s bureaucracy too!
WHAT YOU CAN DO
WRITE THE PACIFICA NATIONAL BOARD via KPFAworker.org to ask them to put radio first,
and endorse the Sustainable Budget proposals from KPFA’s union.
SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR KPFA’S WORKERS. Give generously during KPFA’s emergency fund
drive on November 18 & 19 – say you’re pledging to support KPFA’s workers.
Communications Workers of America
Local 9415 • AFL-CIO

Imagine a Net of Light to heal the Gulf of Mexico

The prayer of the united indigenous grandmothers on the gulf/BP desaster! - lsiten + follow NOW!

Please share this note with everyone... Paste it on your wall profile and make all of your friends aware. Sending this message out to the groups you are apart of, everyone needs to wake up to this! Our healing thought and love are VERY POWERFUL, lets unit and heal, heal, heal with our powerful love, love, love and light, light, light ♥ ♥ ♥

The Grandmother’s Council of Indigenous Elders Worldwide have requested the rest of us join them in the following meditation.

The Gulf of Mexico needs healing and cleaning. It is not something we can do with our hands. There are people who know what to physically do and they have to do that. The real healing and cleansing of the Gulf is energetic and it is light. We are being called to use the Net of Light. I am sharing this request that was shared with me from my friend, astrologer and shaman Kaye Sturgis. Please join us. Your focused attention is required and appreciated by all and the earth and all life on it.

The Grandmother’s Council of Indigenous Elders Worldwide have requested the rest of us join them in the following meditation. Their website link is below the request.

We ask you to cast, anchor, and hold the Net of Light steady for the Gulf of Mexico . This crisis is affecting the entire world, and humanity is asleep. Wake up! Animals are dying, plants are dying, and your Mother is writhing in agony. If you hold the Net of Light steady at this time you will help stave off further catastrophe.

You have been lulled into a false sleep, told that others (B.P.) will take care of this problem. This is not so. And this is not the time for you to fall into oblivion. Determine now to stay awake, and once you have made that commitment, think of, cast, and hold the Net of Light. Hold it deep and hold it wide. Amplify its reach to penetrate the waters of the Gulf and dive deep beneath the crust of Mother Earth. Anchor it at the earth's core and as you hold it there, ask it to unify with the mineral kingdom of this planet. It will do this and will harmonize with all the solid and liquid mineral states on earth-including oil and gas. The Net of Light will call these minerals back into harmony.

Whatever human beings have damaged, human beings must correct. This is the law. We repeat: This is the law. You cannot sit back and ask God to fix the mess humanity has created. Each of you must throw your shoulders to the wheel and work. We are asking for your help. Several years ago we gave you the Net of Light so you would be able to help the earth at times like this. Step forward now. This is the Net of Light that will hold the earth during the times of change that are upon you.

First move into your heart and call on us. We will meet you there. The Net of Light is lit by the jewel of your heart, so move into this lighted place within you and open to the Net of which you are a part. Bask in its calming presence. It holds you at the same time that you hold it. Now think of magnifying your union with us. We, the Great Council of the Grandmothers, are with you now, and all those who work with the Net of Light are also with you. There are thousands, even millions now connected in light. Along with this union, call forth the power of the sacred places on earth. These will amplify the potency of our joint effort. Then call on the sacred beings that have come to prevent the catastrophe that threatens to overwhelm your planet. We will work together.

Think of, cast and magnify the presence of the Net of Light in the Gulf of Mexico . See, imagine or think of it holding the waters, holding the land, the plants, the sea life, and the people, holding them all! The Net of Light is holding them steady; it is returning them to balance. Let the love within your lighted heart keep pouring into the Net of Light and hold, hold, hold. Calmly and reverently watch as the light from your heart flows along the strands of the Net. It will follow your command and continuously move forth. As soon as you think of it, it will happen. We ask you to practice this for only a few minutes at a time, but to repeat it throughout the day and night.

We promise that this work with the Net of Light will do untold good. We are calling you to service now. You are needed. Do not miss this opportunity. We thank you and bless you.

http://www.grandmotherscouncil.com/

May Announcements and Thoughts about Text Messaging

Hi all. I wanted to announce the upcoming screenings of THE HERETICS:

92YTribeca, NYC June 3rd, 7:30 pm

New Fest, NYC June 10th, 5:00 pm

Barcelona International Women's Film Festival, June 20th

Frameline Film Festival, San Francisco, Saturday, June 26th, 11:00 am (morning of the Dyke March)
Victoria Theater 2961 16th Street

Hope you can make it to one of them!

Some ranting and raving:

I am thinking a lot these days about what is appropriate to talk about over text messages and how to respond when someone writes something "important" or "serious" over a text message. I found this article that I think sums up why it is not a good idea to engage in these conversations over texting, but I think what is also problematic is that some people really prefer to talk about difficult or emotional subjects over texting, because it is easier for them. But if I don't want to, it is hard to be in a relationship or friendship with them. It means laying down the boundaries (ie: Can we talk about this in person or over the phone?) Here is the article that I found, but I am looking for more. Could be a very interesting psychological study or maybe a film:

http://www.helium.com/items/628311-the-pros-and-cons-of-text-messages

What do you think about all this? I would love to hear your stories, advice.

Cheers,

Crescent

THE HERETICS Bay Area Premiere April 11th, 2010

Buy tickets here: THE HERETICS

Get your tickets now for the Bay Area Premiere of the feature documentary, THE HERETICS, directed by Joan Braderman.
presented as Closing Night Film of the San Francisco Women's Film Festival at the Roxie Theater, April 11th, 7:15 PM

(SAN FRANCISCO, CA--March 12, 2010) The San Francisco Women's Film Festival will present the Bay Area premiere of THE HERETICS as its Closing Night film in celebration
of Women’s History Month. For tickets and information: 415-754-FILM (3456) or www.sfwff.com

THE HERETICS chronicles the twenty-year span of feminist art magazine HERESIES. Filmed across the globe, THE HERETICS features interviews and artwork of the artists who grew Heresies into a feminist forum for revolution. Members of the Heresies included Lucy Lippard, Betsy Hess, Pat Steir, Joan Snyder, Miriam Schapiro, Ida Applebroog, Janet Froelich and Su Friedrich. Such luminaries as Alice Walker, Adrienne Rich, and Barbara Kruger were featured in the magazine that spawned ground-breaking photography, poetry, art and ideas.

The film uncovers for the first time the inner workings of the Second Wave of the Women’s Movement. Following her dream of becoming a filmmaker, Braderman moved to New York City in 1971. By lucky chance, she joined Heresies, a feminist art collective at the epicenter of the 1970s art world in lower Manhattan. Members of the Heresies Collective—now accomplished artists, writers, architects, filmmakers, curators, and teachers now scattered around the world—speak intimately about the extraordinary times they shared in 1970s Manhattan. The founding collective included Miriam Schapiro, Lucy Lippard, Joan Snyder, Pat Steir, Ida Applebroog, Janet Froelich and Su Friedrich.

Ambitious in style, Braderman collages moving images from contemporary and historical film and video with cutting-edge digital motion graphics. She presents images of the women, then and now, in their studios creating artwork in a range of forms: from architecture to painting to design and environmental work. With her signature layering and pastiche style, Braderman evokes this tumultuous time, in which thousands of small groups of women on every continent met to consider their situation – as women in a man’s world -- and to devise strategies for unlocking their potential and making their work visible. By focusing on the Heresies Collective as a microcosm of the larger international Women’s Movement, Braderman demonstrates how the Movement challenged the terms of gender and power, re-writing the lives of generations to follow.

About Director Joan Braderman: Joan Braderman is a video artist, writer and filmmaker whose work is in such permanent collections as MoMA, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. Her films and videos have been shown in film festivals around the world including: the Whitney Biennial, the Edinburgh Film Festival, VIDEO VISIONS in the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, and the British Film Theater in London. She has won grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The New York and Massachusetts Councils for the Arts, The American Film Institute, The Jerome Foundation and many others including prizes in major festivals world-wide. Best known for her "text and performance" art or "stand-up theory" pieces in which she inserts her own body (and sassy mouth) into the images of popular mass media, THE HERETICS takes her in a new direction. "Someone simply had to tell the upbeat side of the story of the Second Wave in this medium MINUS the ridiculous but now to-be-expected bagof tricks, attacks and distortions. It's past time and I knew the group of smart, sexy, brilliant, kick-ass women who could do it." Braderman took an extended leave from teaching at Hampshire College, in Amherst, Mass. as Professor of Film and Video to make this film.

About Producer Crescent Diamond: Crescent is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and television producer who has been working in the Bay Area for over ten years. Past projects include the documentary, Silence Ain’t Sexy and the monthly television series, Street Level TV. Crescent is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate in the Cinema Department at San Francisco State University, for which she received the prestigious Jacob K. Javits Fellowship for Graduate Studies. Crescent serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors at Berkeley Community Media. http://www.crescentdiamond.tv

About the SF Women's Film Festival: The 6th Annual San Francisco Women's Film Festival will take place April 7-11. Filmmaker and community educator, Scarlett Shepard, founded the San Francisco Women’s Film Festival in response to the lack of credit given to women filmmakers in the history of cinema. While a student at San Francisco State University’s cinema program, Shepard embarked on a journey to create a platform that would showcase local, student and international women filmmakers. She teamed up with SFSU professors, the SFSU Women’s Center of Associated Students, local award-winning filmmakers and a host of local sponsors, and San Francisco State University’s first Women’s Film Festival was born in April 2005.

For more information
The Heretics: www.heresiesfilmproject.org
San Francisco Women's Film Festival: www.sfwff.com

Intersection for the Arts: Open Process Series: Clips and Conversation - 'THE HERETICS' and 'WOMEN ART REVOLUTION'

Intersection for the Arts: Open Process Series: Clips and Conversation - 'THE HERETICS' and 'WOMEN ART REVOLUTION'

Urgent: Public comments needed for Prop 8 court case

http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/televise_prop8_trial/?rc=fb_share1
Urgent: Public comments needed for Prop 8 court case

U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker -- who will be overseeing a federal court challenge to Prop 8 starting this Monday (January 11) -- is considering whether or not to open the court room to TV cameras.

The court just announced that it is seeking public comment on the proposal to televise the trial -- and that all comments must be submitted to the court by a Friday deadline.

Not surprisingly, supporters of Prop 8 -- which took away the right of same-sex couples to marry in California -- do not want the trial to be televised.

We have just this one chance to make our voices heard -- thousands of Americans calling for equality, transparency and accountability. THE HERETICS focuses on the Heresies Collective as a microcosm of the larger international Women’s Movement in which thousands of small, private groups of women met together to consider their situation -- as women in a man’s world -- and to devise strategies for unlocking their potential.

Director Joan Braderman is an award-winning video artist and filmmaker whose work is in such permanent collections as MoMA, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Institute of Contemporary Art in London, and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. We have a right to non-gmo non-pesticide ridden food.

WHAT:
US House and Senate are about (in a week and a half) to vote on bill that will OUTLAW ORGANIC FARMING (bill HR 875).

WHEN: There is an enormous rush to get this into law within the next 2 weeks before people realize what is happening.

Main backer and lobbyist is (guess who) Monsanto - chemical and genetic engineering giant corporation. This bill will require organic farms to use specific fertilizers and poisonous insect sprays dictated by the newly formed agency to "make sure there is no danger to the public food supply".

This will include backyard gardens that grow food only for a family and not for sales. If this passes then NO more heirloom clean seeds but only Monsanto genetically altered seeds that are now showing up with unexpected diseases in humans. There is a video on the subject.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thE54K3PaTY And another one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeWVkTU1s1E

The name on this outrageous food plan is Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009 (bill HR 875).

THIS IS REAL, FOLKS! PASS THIS ALONG TO ALL CONCERNED ON YOUR MAILING LISTS & CALL YOUR SENATE REPRESENTETIVES TODAY! Get on that phone and burn up the wires. Get anyone else you can to do the same thing.

The House and Senate WILL pass this if they are not massively threatened with loss of their position.... They only fear your voice and your vote.

The best thing to do is go to all you have to do is put in your zip and it will give you your congressperson and how to get in touch with them. When you call their office someone will answer the phone, just tell them (politely) that you are calling to express your views on HR 875. Tell them your views, they'll take your name and address and pass your comments along to the congressperson.

WHO to contact: The following link is a list of the U.S. senators and their contact info.

http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

[Please “cut” and “paste” this on to your friends, don’t just forward it, as the links get screwy after a few forwards]

Head the chemical lobbyists off at the pass

Action Alert! Send email to State Treasurer Bill Lockyer telling him, "Not another cut!"

To send a message, go to: http://capwiz.com/calfac/state/main/?state=CA
The legislature has ordered Treasurer Lockyer and Dept of Finance Director Mike Genest to decide by April 1 whether California is getting enough money from the federal government in recovery stimulus (American Recovery Act, ARRA) funding to stop the new cuts.

Next Tuesday, March 17, they will hold a public hearing to "help them make the trigger determination," according to Lockyer's web site. At stake is $50 million for the California State University and more than $900 million in other cuts to essential social services as well as to the UC.

Send your own message to Treasurer Lockyer about budget cuts to your CSU campus.

To send a message, go to: http://capwiz.com/calfac/state/main/?state=CA

Please send your message in time for the public hearing, next Tuesday, March 17.

Click here to forward this mailing with your personal message.

This email was sent by: Alliance for the CSU
980 9th Street, Suite 2250, Sacramento, CA 95814

Scraper Bike Video

Hey folks. This was a class project that I worked on in a group last semester. Rafael Flores directed and produced it, and I edited this version for class. A good example of editing something that I did not direct or produce (I was the Assistant Director).

Rafael Flores, the Director/Producer has his own version (with more footage and music) that he edited and is submitting to film festivals. He is raising money to submit to festivals by selling dvds of his film. To buy one contact:

Green Eyed Media Film Now on Sale: "The Scraper Bike King" "The Scraper Bike King" - Directed by Rafael Flores A touching documentary about the original creator of the Oakland-based Scraper Bike Movement: Tyrone Stevenson Jr. (a.k.a."Bay-be" Champ). This film investigates how the 19 year-old entrepreneur first began the bicycle movement as a way to get kids off the tough streets of East Oakland. His recent fame generated by his Scraper Bike Theme Song on "YouTube" has catapulted him into stardom by getting him in touch with rap stars in the Bay Area (Keak the Sneak, the Trunk Boiz and Hyroglyphics to name just a few). Now on sale for $7. All proceeds go to Green Eyed Media's fund for to get this film into more festivals. To purchase copies, send a check, cash or money order to: Green Eyed Media 305 Palmcrest Dr. - Apt. #21Daly City, CA (94015)

If you want, you can buy a scaper bike from them.

Contact:

Tyrone Stevenson (Baby Champ)
http://www.scraperbikes.net
http://www.scraperbikestore.com

"Clean Coal" commercial by the Coen Brothers

Public Access in San Francisco, is it the end?

My dear friend Sunny wrote this email a few days ago. I will be going to the meeting on Monday, Feb, 23rd at 10:00 am at the Monday, the 23rd at 10:00 AM for the City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee City Hall, Room 263, 2nd Floor, San Francisco, CA. This is a meeting where people can speak up in behalf of public access - even if you just want to keep watching it. For more information, please visit the AccessSF website: http://accessf.org/ As some of you know, I am on the Board of Directors at Berkeley Community Media, and we want to do anything we can to help save Public Access in San Francisco. If you live in SF, please CALL your supervisors and come to the meeting, if you can. If you live elsewhere, please find out about your local Public Access channel (if you are lucky enough to still have one) before it gets taken away.

Thanks,
Crescent

From Sunny Angulo:

Sent this out to some of my groups, wanted to pass it on to you. If you believe in a free and democratic media... this could very well be curtains for just that in our fair city. Maybe you've been a guest on the station, maybe you just like to watch good television, maybe you are a Free Speech warrior, maybe you belong to an independent media org that can join the fight, maybe you just hate Comcast, maybe you are a film/art/culture geek, maybe you are an activist, maybe you learned something from Channel 29 or got some kind of value from it. Whatever the case...
********
********
Hey, gang. Many of you know that I've been a media activist for a long time, and believe very strongly in the public's right to have access to critical information and reliable and representative media that is not controlled solely by private interests. I have seen first-hand the benefits of a community's ability to control their own modes of communication, through independent sources of media, a diversity of voices and funding and training for strong investigative reporting. I can't stress enough how crucial this is or the kind of impact I have seen it make on severely underrepresented communities. I attend a lot of press conferences, protests and rallies for all kinds of causes, because I believe in them and want to support my community however I can. But I rarely try to personally recruit people to come out to speak on different issues. In the past, public access in San Francisco has been threatened with budget cuts and lay-offs, but never have things been this bad or serious. So, I'm taking a minute today to write you all in the hopes that you will take a second this week to contact a supervisor, come to the hearing on Monday or get involved on the AccessSF.org website in this crucial struggle. There is a hearing on Monday, and I know it's asking quite a bit, but maybe you can make it out? Here's some background on what's happening: , The Department of Technology (DT) of the City and County of San Francisco has issued its Request for Proposal (RFP) to manage pubic access beginning July 1, 2009. DT is offering $120,000 to do this job. That's an approximate $560,000 cut in operations funding. The RFP requires the bidder to make up the difference. This proposal effectively puts the nail in the coffin of public access as we know it. There is no question that if nothing changes all access to the main studio, flash studio, editing and equipment checkout will be gone on July 1st as well as any reliable playback and scheduling for our shows. One of two things will probably happen: Comcast will take it over and assume management of the station and who knows what that will look like, or the SFgov station will take it over, and envelope it into the City Hall station. I need to get some clarity on these two options, but neither of them is good. I just found out that LA Access was finally closed for good a couple of months ago. I also know Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi is working to change the state legislative languaging around how funds can be appropriated and distributed, but I'm not sure how much this will help. I am meeting with him tomorrow to find out what specific things people can reference when they talk. Here is a link to the SOS coalition, which is more of a show of support by other individuals and organizations for Access SF. http://accessf.org/soscoalition/. It would be wonderful to have people join and get members of their groups to join. If you have ever been a guest on the Newsroom, you know the kind of reporting we have done over the years. We have been nominated for a California Emmy several years in a row (darn KQUED keeps beating us out!), and we've covered stories that no one else has. I've had people come up to me on the street, literally, and tell me how much they've enjoyed the show, and how it's the first time they've actually seen their own district supervisor speak or find out what their local officials actually do. We've had labor on, public finance workers, immigrant rights lawyers, Evo Morales's cabinet members, activists, Iraq war veterans, nuclear weapons experts - you name it. We have supported our local community groups, and we hope you can come out and support us in this very serious time. This is YOUR media. It's YOUR television station, and we need you now to help us save it. Please come out this Monday, the 23rd at 10:00 AM for the City Operations and Neighborhood Services Committee City Hall, Room 263, 2nd Floor. This is a meeting where people can speak up in behalf of public access - even if you just want to keep watching it. For more information, please visit the AccessSF website: http://accessf.org/ And also, for those who can't make it, here's the 411 for your local elected's: FOR REAL: help a sister out.<br Today

A SuperNova of GoodWill
by Ken Kalb

At Noon on January 20, 2009 at the Inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama as the 44th President of the United States -- a stellium of Aquarian planets – the Sun, Mercury and Jupiter will gather at the midheaven -- activating Obama's charisma and magic tongue in glowing incandescence. His soaring oratory with millions gathered and billions watching will ignite the flame of the human spirit like never before into a veritable global orgasm of hope.

One hundred and forty six years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, the big Wheel of Fortune has spun full circle and stopped on his magic number. Planet Earth is overdue for a global party, and the Obama Inauguration marks the moment. The combination of the collective sigh of relief for the end of the Bush administration, along with the birth of hope and inspiration of the Obama era -- signifies a genuine global rebirth. Put your dancing shoes on......

It’s been a long time coming.

The stars are aligned for the ignition of the collective heart of humanity to awaken in jubillence. The life giving Sun -- along with Mercury the messenger and Jupiter the lucky star -- have just entered Aquarius, sign of the dawning new dispensation. It is so fitting and appropriate that Barack Obama -- such a capable and shining star of promise -- -- will become the leader of the free world at this propitious point in Earth history. Just as one age is dying and another is being born -- as this planet both purifies and plants the seeds for tomorrow, hope overlights a fresh start. Change the head and the body will follow, we are told by the sages of old.

We are all a part of the birth of this miracle.

Though beware; many will try to make Barack into Piscean-age messiah. But the Aquarian Age, as Obama reminded us throughout the campaign -- is about we -- not me.

Symbolizing this climate for miracles were the heroics of Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger, III, an Aquarian himself who had a precise conjunction of Jupiter with his natal Sun when he heroically saved 155 people on January 15th. Everything that possibly could go wrong went right. Let us never underestimate the Jupiterian power of luck and good fortune, particularly when it is combined with masterful skill.

Yes We Can! There are amazing things happening, and anything IS possible. Optimism will abound in the excitement of this Uranian/Aquarian energy, and under the Sag Moon and sweet Venus aspects in the evening, the planetary party will rock.

Though with Mercury and Saturn spinning retrograde, the reality checks are simply delayed for awhile. For this ebullient moment comes in the face of massive, seemingly insurmountable tribulations. It will take some very powerful juju to unscramble this egg.

So let's take a quick thumbnail look at Obama's stars and the Inauguration chart.

Barack was born under the leadership sign of Leo, ruler of the heart. Aquarius was rising -- the Uranus-ruled sign governing humanitarianism and the collective. Aquarius is also the placement of his magnanimous Jupiter. The Moon was in Gemini -- Gem-In-Eye -- those genius twins electrically connecting the vast poles of human interaction. Mercury in magnetic Leo, Venus in caring Cancer, energetic Mars and transformational Pluto in service-sign Virgo, Saturn in hard-working and resourceful Capricorn, Uranus in loving Leo, visionary Neptune in transformative Scorpio.

When Obama was just a Presidential rumor, I made the prediction that he would be the next President largely because of the dove-tailing of this point in time with this Aquarian line-up on Inauguration day. Right now, he is having his fortuitous fourth Jupiter return -- a once every twelve year cycle of good fortune. Obama is an evolutionary soul in the process of mounting mastery. His charisma (Sun) and communication skills (Mercury) are two of his greatest gifts, and both of these planets swing into direct Aquarian alignment with his returning Jupiter directly at the time of the massive gathering of the Inauguration. He is a veritable shooting star with quantum numbers of humans riding his comet tail on this Supernova of goodwill.

At the Inauguration moment, the Moon will be sitting directly on Barack’s midheaven at the Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp – the Phoenix rising point of the zodiac. He will empower humanity with the inspiration that we can all rise together from the ashes of the past by assembling the best and the brightest under his leadership. Though with Obama’s natal Saturn sitting directly on the inaugural chart’s midheaven, his message will be grounded in some sobering tones: "There will be false starts and setbacks, frustrations and disappointments. And we will be called to show patience even as we act with fierce urgency."

Afterall, civilization is in a period of a great sorting out process signified by the series of 4 oppositions of Saturn (the status quo) and Uranus (change to the new), lasting through 2010, including exact oppositions on February 5 and September 15th this year.

But the grander planetary procession also signals that this will be a hopeful transformation.. Jupiter’s transit through Aquarius in 2009 and then Pisces in 2010, is what astrologer’s call ‘mutual reception.’ This boosts the frequency of the planet’s involved in a fascinating web, so follow these connections here. Jupiter and Neptune co-rule Pisces, and both planets are currently in Aquarius, which is co-ruled by Uranus. Uranus is transiting through Pisces, the sign Jupiter and Neptune co-rule. These giants are amplified by this connection as though they were all in an Aquarian conjunction. This is particularly poignant to be happening at the Shift of a 26000-year cycle from the Piscean to the Aquarian Age. This fractal of the divine science of astrology offers a deep hope for the welfare and benefit of the very future of humankind.

Uranus and Aquarius are all about change, the very mantra of Obama. This country was actually born in synchrony with the discovery of Uranus. Uranus and Aquarius rule new technology and the freedom of the human spirit. It is the Mother of Invention for humanitarian purposes. And more specifically in our current phase, new Green technology. Of course, one of Obama’s principal directives will be to help shift this country from a fossil fuel centered economy to a solar hydrogen alternative energy driven world. The Aquarian concept is that with the right vision and leadership – together - we can do anything.

And with potent Pluto just now embarking on a 20-year journey through Capricorn -- a karmic transformation to a more grounded and sustainable world has just begun.

Of course the backdrop of the plethora of problems, the many campaign promises, the critical issues of the world, the designs of his political adversaries -- all daunt and haunt the task ahead.

But Barack brings another secret ingredient to Washington. It is the Spirit of Aloha which he will share with the world from his birthplace and upbringing in the islands of Hawaii. This could very well be the missing and magic ingredient which births a World at Peace.

From the Lucky Star Blog: Cosmic Perspectives at:
www.luckystarz.com
Ken Kalb is the author of The Grand Catharsis, La Nueva Luz del Milenio, LightShift 2000: Let’s Turn on the Light of the World and hundreds of published articles. Not hate.

That was our community's reaction to the news that Ken Starr had filed a legal brief -- on behalf of the "Yes on 8" campaign -- to nullify the 18,000 same-sex marriages performed in California between May and November of 2008.

It's time to put a face to Ken Starr's shameful legal proceedings. To put a face to the 18,000 couples facing forcible divorce by the state of California. To put a face to marriage equality.

Because, gay or straight, YOU are the face of the Marriage Equality Movement.

That's why, on Saturday morning, we launched the "Please Don't Divorce..." campaign, asking Courage Campaign members to send us pictures with a simple message: "Please don't divorce us," "Please don't divorce my mothers (or fathers)," "Please don't divorce my friends, Name and Name," "Please don't divorce Californians" or whatever you wanted to write after "Please don't divorce..."

Two days later, we're still receiving a stready stream of photos from couples, friends, families and even one from a cat. And now we want one from you.

These pictures will break your heart. They've made us cry, more than a few times.

We want to share this slideshow with you now. Straight or gay, we also want you to submit your own photo, as an individual, a couple or in a group. Over the holidays, please also consider gathering your family to pose for a "Please don't divorce..." photo. Click here to watch the slideshow, submit your own photo, and spread the word:

http://www.couragecampaign.org/DontDivorce

Love. Not shame.

That was our community's reaction when thousands of people across California showed up on Saturday for "MILK plus LOVE," 51 screenings of "MILK" organized in 39 communities by the Courage Campaign in concert with Join the Impact's "Light Up the Night" candlelight vigil for equality.

Love. Not anger.

That was our community's reaction to the pledge to "Repeal Prop 8" launched by the Courage Campaign on November 7, signed by over 300,000 people, and supported by MoveOn, CREDO Mobile and Join the Impact.

Now, we need you to show our opponents, our friends, the media, and America that Ken Starr and the Yes on 8 campaign's attempt to nullify 18,000 marriages is not just a court case. Lives are actually hanging in the balance. Click here to watch the "Please Don't Divorce..." slideshow, submit your own photo, and spread the word:

http://www.couragecampaign.org/DontDivorce

If you think it's important to proudly stand up for marriage equality, please forward this message to your friends today -- before they go away for the holidays.

Thank you for everything you are doing to restore marriage equality and push for progressive change in California.

Eden James
Managing Director

P.S. On Friday, we asked you to sign our invitation to Pastor Rick Warren to participate in an open, honest debate about Prop 8 and same-sex marriage with Rev. Eric Lee, a strong leader on marriage equality in the faith community and in the African American community.

On December 24, the Courage Campaign will deliver your signatures -- 22,497 and growing -- to Pastor Warren at the Saddleback Church in Orange County. We want to deliver as many signatures as possible. So, if you would like to add your name to Wednesday's delivery, please click the link below. It only takes a minute:

http://www.couragecampaign.org/RickWarrenDebate

Slumdog Millionaire- nomination for Best Director for Golden Globe Award

Written by:

Martha Richards, Executive Director
The Fund for Women Arists

Jan Lisa Huttner, The Hot Pink Pen
The Fund for Women Artists

The Golden Globe Award nominations have been announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and once again, no women have been nominated in the category of "Best Director."

This year the omission is worse than usual. Danny Boyle was nominated for an award as "Best Director" of "Slumdog Millionaire", but his female co-director, Loveleen Tandan, was not mentioned in the awards list. "Slumdog Millionaire" has been nominated for "Best Picture, Drama", "Best Screenplay", and "Best Score", in addition to "Best Director".

Chicago film critic Jan Lisa Huttner interviewed Danny Boyle as part of her review of "Slumdog Millionaire" for The Fund for Women Artists at: http://www.womenarts.org/reviews/SlumdogMillionaire.htm. Huttner specifically asked Boyle if Tandan was his co-director, and he said, "Yes, she deserves it! She's a proper director." (See http://www.womenarts.org/reviews/SlumdogMillionaire.htm#co_director )

In the 65 year history of the Golden Globe Awards, Barbra Streisand is the only woman to ever win in the Best Director category (for "Yentl" in 1983), and only two other women have ever been nominated - Jane Campion for "The Piano" in 1993, and Sofia Coppola for "Lost in Translation" in 2003. The people nominated for Golden Globe Awards are often nominated for Oscars as well. Only three women have ever been nominated for Oscars in the "Best Director" category and no women have ever won.

We think it is time to give women directors credit where credit is due. We are asking you to please send the letter below to Ms. Chantal Dinnage, the Managing Director of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to let them know that we think Loveleen Tandan should be recognized for her work on "Slumdog Millionaire."

You can cut and paste the letter below and send it to Ms. Dinnage at: info@hfpa.org Please remember to sign the letter before you send it!!

You can send a snail mail to:
Ms. Chantal Dinnage
Managing Director
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association
646 N. Robertson Blvd.
West Hollywood, CA 90069

You can also send a copy to Michael Russell, who has been the publicist for the Golden Globes for the past eleven years: MRussell@MichaelRussellGroup.com
Michael Russell, Publicist
The Michael Russell Group
1601 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Suite 509
Manhattan Beach, CA 90266

Thanks for your help with this. Please feel free to forward this message or include it in your blogs, Facebook pages, MySpace pages or elsewhere online. The people who make these nominations need to hear from us.

Martha Richards, Executive Director
The Fund for Women Arists

Jan Lisa Huttner, The Hot Pink Pen
The Fund for Women Artists

Dear Ms. Dinnage,

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has nominated Danny Boyle for a Golden Globe award as "Best Director" for his work on "Slumdog Millionaire." Why has the HFPA ignored Boyle's co-director, Loveleen Tandan? Since he acknowledges that she was his co-director, shouldn't she be a co-nominee for the "Best Director" award?

Boyle was recently interviewed by Chicago film critic Jan Lisa Huttner. She asked him if Loveleen Tandan was his co-director. He replied, "Yes, she deserves it! She's a proper director." (See http://www.womenarts.org/reviews/SlumdogMillionaire.htm#co_director ) Also, according to the Internet Movie Database, Danny Boyle is the director and Loveleen Tandan is the "co-director" of "Slumdog Millionaire." (See http://us.imdb.com/title/tt1010048)

In the 65 year history of the Golden Globe Awards, Barbra Streisand is the only woman to ever win in the "Best Director" category (for "Yentl" in 1983), and only two other women have ever been nominated - Jane Campion for "The Piano" in 1993, and Sofia Coppola for "Lost in Translation" in 2003.

It's time to give women directors credit where credit is due. The reason that these companies need to be bailed out is that they make gas-guzzling vehicles that no one wants to buy anymore. Also, it is not sustainable for working people to buy a new car every few years (or a computer!). These industries are way behind the times and need to re-evaluate and change their companies to fit the market and the concerns of their potential customers. By bailing them out, we are basically giving them our tax dollars as a prize for running the worst business. A City Council retreated from their plan to seize public cable channels and studios to consolidate the operations for government use. The fight to save public access cable operations gained momentum when the City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday December 3, 2008, to refer a controversial proposal to a second committee rather than call for a full Council vote. A seven minute video report is available for viewing here: URL: http://fulldisclosure.net/Blogs/62.php

MAJOR INDUSTRY SUPPORT
Following the Council hearing, Full Disclosure® interviewed Mr. Vin Di Bona, four time Emmy Winner and Peabody Award-winning Executive Producer and creator of “America’s Funniest Home Movies” , who is also the former Chairman and currently Co-Chair of “The Caucus” http://www.caucus.org a prestigious industry organization representing Producers, Writers and Directors the New Media in Los Angeles. The Caucus is calling for the preservation of the public access cable operations in Los Angeles.

FORMER CABLE EXECUTIVE
Councilman Bill Rosendahl’s motion was passed unanimously, referring the matter to the Budget Committee. That Committee, chaired by Bernard Parks, will now be charged with the task of re-evaluating whether or how an approximately $30 million dollars in cable operators franchise fees to the city can be used for a public channel.

NO PUBLIC SUPPORT TO CLOSE CHANNELS
Although Council President Eric Garcetti called for six minutes testimony from each side, there were no requests from the public to support the proposal before the Council.

A full and complete video report covering the entire hearing, with testimony from other producers is soon to be released by Full Disclosure Network® to public access cable channels throughout the state and on the internet.

The Full Disclosure Network®, billed as "the news behind the news", is a twice nominated, Emmy award-winning public affairs program.
