No room for Sachin Tendulkar in Rohtak?

Sachin Tendulkar's decision to play his last Ranji Trophy game before his international retirement, against Haryana at Lahli, from October 27 is turning out to be a logistical nightmare for the administrators.

The biggest question confronting the administration both in government and at cricket is: Where to accommodate Sachin Tendulkar, a cricketing icon and a member of the Rajya Sabha?

"As things stand, Rohtak doesn't have a three, four or five star hotel," says a HCA official closely involved in the preparations.

"What's even more concerning is that none have more than 15 rooms, which is the least number of players and officials travelling with the Mumbai team. Right now we are planning to accommodate the team in the Rivoli Hotel, which we feel is the best in the area. It has a Suite Room that can be used by Tendulkar.

But this hotel only has 12 rooms, so the team might be put up at two different places."

What are the other options?

"There are two Haryana government resorts - Tilyar and Myna - being considered but these two also don't have enough rooms. We also need to consider the security aspect as Tendulkar is also a MP. For this we have involved the local administration. The District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police visited the ground today. They are accessing the security situation at the Rivoli and resorts. They will get back to us in next few days," the source informed.

Hang on, it gets more interesting. There is also a chance that Tendulkar might stay at the Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's residence in Rohtak. Hooda's son Deepender is a Lok Sabha member from Haryana. Tendulkar, though, might not be too keen on staying at a different place from the rest of the team.

Also The TV commentators are going to be put up at a hotel 30-35 kms from the stadium.

The other, although relatively minor, logistical problem is preparing the ground for the live television coverage. The stadium has no permanent structure to hold cameras and the association is running against time to construct the temporary structures.

Although this is not the first time that Lahli is hosting a big name - they have had Virender Sehwag play at the Bansi Lal Stadium - but Tendulkar is Tendulkar. For the record, the Haryana team will be staying in the hostel inside the stadium.

Olympics 2020: Tokyo to host 2020 Summer Olympics

Buenos Aires, Argentina: Tokyo on Saturday won the right to host the Olympic Games for the second time, overcoming fears about radiation from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant to land the 2020 edition of the world's biggest sporting event.

Members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Buenos Aires chose the Japanese capital, which previously hosted the Games in 1964, over Istanbul, after Madrid was dramatically eliminated following a first-round tie with the Turkish city.

Crowds gathered in Tokyo broke into wild cheers, despite the result coming in the early hours of the morning nearly a dozen time zones away, television pictures showed.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had earlier flown in to the Argentine capital from the G20 summit in St Petersburg, Russia, to reassure nervous members about the safety of the nuclear plant some 220 kilometres (140 miles) from the city and fears about the leaking of contaminated water.

He told delegates that the situation was "under control", adding: "It has never done or will do any damage to Tokyo."

Fukushima operator the Tokyo Electric Power Co also played down fears of a possible spread of radiation in a separate message.

Concerns over Fukushima -- seriously damaged in the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people -- had dogged the bid in the final days but Abe successfully allayed IOC members' fears.

The final result was 60 votes for Tokyo against 36 for Istanbul, said the IOC.

Tokyo -- third in the vote for the 2016 Games won by Rio de Janeiro -- had been the frontrunners originally, as they promised a safe and financially secure Games in what they termed "uncertain times".

The decision means it will be the fourth time that Japan plays host to the Olympics, having also organised hosted winter Games in Nagano (1998) and Sapporo (1972).

Asia will also see successive Olympics, as the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang is hosting the 2018 winter edition.

Madrid had looked to be the city with the momentum coming into the final week after an outstanding presentation to IOC members in Lausanne in July -- and were hoping that like Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 race, they could go on to win.

But it was not enough, even with 28 of the 35 venues built and all the infrastructure in place plus a positive assessment by the IOC Evaluation Commission -- the only IOC members allowed to visit the bid cities - over their relatively low budget.

Doubts about Spain's recession-hit economy persisted to the end and not even some more upbeat news on the issue recently and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's pledges that financing would not pose problems convinced enough members that they could deliver.

Istanbul had been hoping Turkey would become the first predominantly Muslim country to host the quadrennial sporting extravaganza.

But despite a passionate and dynamic campaign trading on bridging two continents and two cultures as well as an evocative "wake up in Asia compete in Europe" slogan, their bid was hampered in June.

Several IOC members were unimpressed by the heavy-handed way that the Ankara government handled anti-government protests that escalated from opposition to the redevelopment of an Istanbul park.

There was also nervousness surrounding the fallout from the bloody civil war in neighbouring Syria.

Prime Miniser Abe said in his presentation that the Olympics were part of his DNA, having experienced them for the first time at a young age.

"I was at the opening ceremony in Tokyo in 1964 and saw several thousand doves all released into the clear blue sky and coming together to make the Olympic rings," he said.

"It was all amazing to me at 10 years old.

He also cited his experience meeting one of the children on a trip to visit survivors of the earthquake and tsunami and said sport had a key role in society to aid recovery.

"I met with one boy in the affected area, he was holding a cherished football, given to him by a footballer from overseas who had visited the area," said Abe.

"That ball was not just a football to him, it represented his hope for the future.

"Today under the blue sky of Fukushima there are young boys playing football and looking into the future and not the past."

Sachin Tendulkar has retired from ODI cricket. Tendulkar finishes an
illustrious career in the 50-over format, having played 463 ODIs,
scored 18,426 runs and made 49 centuries, each of them a world record.
His last ODI was against Pakistan in Dhaka during the Asia Cup, where
he made a half-century in India's victory.

"I have decided to retire from the One Day format of the game," he
said in a statement. "I feel blessed to have fulfilled the dream of
being part of a World Cup winning Indian team. The preparatory process
to defend the World Cup in 2015 should begin early and in right
earnest. I would like to wish the team all the very best for the
future. I am eternally grateful to all my well wishers for their
unconditional support and love over the years."

Tendulkar made his ODI debut on his first international tour, in 1989,
against Pakistan in Gujranwala, where he got a duck. He scored his
first half-century in his ninth ODI and made an immediate impact when
promoted to open the batting in 1994, in an ODI against New Zealand in
Auckland, where he smashed 82 in 49 balls. His first century took 79
ODIs to arrive but he kept piling them on with remarkable consistency.

When you hear from a big player, that he has heard a bit about you, it is very nice. After that, he gave me a few tips about succeeding at the top level.

Virat Kohli, who powered India to a miraculous win last night against Sri Lanka, has been named the vice-captain in the absence of Sehwag.

The selection committee of the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) - Kris Srikkanth, Mohinder Amarnath, Narendra Hirwani, Surendra Bhave and Raja Venkat - met in Mumbai this morning to pick the squad for the tournament that begins in Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 12.

Srikkanth, chairman of selectors, clarified that no player has been dropped and the three players have rested due to injuries. Sehwag, who looked off-colour during the Australian tour, managed to score just 65 runs in 5 matches at an average of 13.

Tendulkar, who made 143 runs in seven matches Down Under, has been under tremendous pressure to take a decision on his one-day career. But the master batsman is all set to board a plane to Bangladesh. The tournament will be keenly watched as India will play old foe Pakistan, apart from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Yusuf Pathan, marked his return to competitive cricket with a 78-ball 114 to steer Baroda to a 52-run win over Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, has also been picked in the squad.

The selectors have retained Ravindra Jadeja as well as Rohit Sharma. Fast bowler Ashok Dinda has also got an ODI call.

Sahara India was Thursday back as cricket Team India sponsor and the owner of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Pune Warriors after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) agreed to most of its demands.

Sahara, sponsors for last 11 years, had decided to sever all its ties with the BCCI earlier this month citing denial of "natural justice". The last straw that split the relationship was BCCI's refusal to allow ailing cricketer Yuvraj Singh's price to be added to Pune Warriors' auction purse after the southpaw was ruled out of the tournament with a lung tumour.

After 12 days of intense negotiations, the two parties issued a joint statement here signed by BCCI president N. Srinivasan and Sahara India managing director Subrata Roy.

"Sahara confirms that it will continue sponsorship of the Indian team. Sahara may want to exercise its right to assign the sponsorship as per the agreement," the statement said.

The BCCI agreed to extend the trading window, which was due to close Friday, until Feb 29 to give Pune Warriors India the opportunity to have successful negotiations with other franchisees as it looks to strengthen its squad.

Dravid to be presented Polly Umrigar Award

Veteran batsman Rahul Dravid will be presented with the 'Polly Umrigar Award for India's best cricketer of 2010-11' season during the BCCI's annual awards ceremony to be held on December 10 in Chennai.

The 38-year-old Dravid, who scored 1258 runs in 15 Tests at an average of 53 this season, pulled off six hundreds during the year.

Dravid was the star of India's disastrous tour of England earlier this year, which cost India the top spot in the ICC Test rankings after they were whitewashed 0-4.

Only Dravid stood up and hit up three centuries as rest of the Indian batting tumbled. The Bangalorean will be honoured with a trophy and prize of Rs. 5 lakh.

India women's team captain Jhulan Goswami will also be honoured at the annual awards. The pacer will be awarded the 'M A Chidambaram Best Woman Cricketer of 2010-11' trophy for claiming 21 wickets in eight matches, including a five-for.
