Unsold - RP Singh, Brett Lee. Nathan Coulter-Nile - he was fought for by Delhi and Rajasthan. For the 2nd time in the day, Richard Madley fails to spot a franchise bidding, just before he brought the hammer down. Rajasthan was the team who were raising the bid. Madley apologised and continued the auction. Finally, Coulter-Nile was sold to Delhi for Rs. 4.25 crore. Laxmipathy Balaji, was bought by Punjab for Rs. 1.8 crore after a bidding war between Bangalore and Punjab. Ashish Nehra was sold to Chennai for his base price of Rs. 2 crore. Varun Aaron was sold to Bangalore for Rs. 2 crore.Parwinder Awana was bought by Hyderabad for Rs. 65 lakh, but Punjab exercised their right-to-match card to buy Awana. Jaydev Unadkat was sold to Delhi for Rs. 2.8 crore. Rajasthan and Delhi were the ones interested, and Delhi eventually got him. Mohit Sharma was snapped up by Chennai for Rs. 2 crore. Yesterday saw Yuvraj Singh get richer by Rs. 14 crores, while Dinesh Karthik went for Rs. 12.5 crores. The Indian players weren't the only one who went for huge bucks. Aussie quick, Mitchell Starc was snapped up by Bangalore for Rs. 5 crores, while Corey Anderson - the hard-hitting Kiwi - was bought for Rs. 4.5 crores. Day 1 action saw 216 players being sold/unsold, which brings us to day 2 - where the Indian uncapped players will go up for sale. It promises to be another crackerjack of a day.

KL Rahul was sold to Hyderabad for Rs. 1 crore. Bangalore were asked whether they wanted to exercise the right-to-match card. Vijay Mallya asked for some time and after a discussion, rejected the offer. Suryakumar Yadav was sold to Kolkata for Rs. 70 lakh. Bangalore started the bid for Mayank Agarwal, then Mumbai and Delhi joined in. Mumbai opted out, but Delhi came in, so Hyderabad and Delhi were fighting it out. Mayank was sold to Delhi for Rs. 1.6 crore.

Srikkanth Anirudha was sold to Hyderabad for Rs. 20 lakh. Unsold - Tirumalasetti Suman. Vijay Zolwas sold to Bangalore for Rs. 30 lakh. Baba Aparajith was sold to Chennai for Rs. 10 lakh. Gurkeerat Singh saw bidding between Punjab and Mumbai. Rajasthan entered the race too. Mumbai opted and it was left to Rajasthan and Punjab. The price shot to Rs. 1.1 crore when Kolkata decided to enter the race. Finally Punjab bought Gurkeerat for Rs. 1.3 crore. Unmukt Chand was fought for by Mumbai and Rajasthan, he was bought by Rajasthan for Rs. 65 lakh. Delhi declined to use their right-to-match card for him. Manish Pandey was sold to Kolkata for Rs. 1.7 crore. Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata were fighting for him, before Kolkata grabbed him. Manpreet Juneja was sold to Hyderabad for Rs. 10 lakh. Kedar Jadhav's bid saw bidding from Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad. Hyderabad and Kolkata were fighting for him, Hyderabad bought him for Rs. 2 crore. But, Delhi used their right-to-match card to buy him, leaving Hyderabad stunned.

The snub to Sri Lankan players should come as no surprise. They will be unavailable for the second half of the tournament due to their tour of UK.

Daredevils bought back maverick former England captain Kevin Pietersen for Rs.9 crore and India’s Test opener Murali Vijayfor Rs.5 crore. Vijay, who was earlier with Chennai Super Kings, was the first cricketer to go under the hammer. Pietsersen was first sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs.9 crore but Daredevils used the Right to Match (RTM) card to buy him back.

Daredevils were the early bidders for Karthik and Sunrisers Hyderabad competed with them for a while before Knight Riders again made a late bid after it had crossed the Rs 10 crore mark but withdrew immediately and Daredeveils eventually got their man.

The Pathan brothers — Irfan and Yusuf — saw their worth nosedive as compared to what they were paid in the 2011 auction. Yusuf, whose base price was Rs. 2 crore, got opening bids only from Sunrisers and Kings XI, before KKR used the RTM to buy him back at Rs. 3.25 crore. Irfan’s base price was Rs. 1.5 crore and Sunrisers bought him for Rs. 2.4 crore.

Australia’s Ashes hero Mitchell Johnson was sold to Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 6.50 crore while his compatriot David Warnerwent to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs.5.5 crore.

India discard Virender Sehwag went to Kings XI Punjab for Rs. 3.2 crore while Kolkata Knight Riders used their RTM card to buy back South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis for Rs.5.5 crore that was made by Chennai Super Kings.

In the next set of marquee players, Australia’s T20 captain George Bailey went to Kings XI for Rs.3.25 crore while Sunrisers used their RTM card to buy back West Indies Test and T20 captain Darren Sammy from Daredevils for Rs. 3.5 crore.

Super Kings also used their only RTM card to buy back South African Faf du Plesis from Daredevils for Rs. 4.75 crore.

Mumbai Indians bought Mike Hussey (Rs. 5 crore) and Zaheer Khan (Rs. 2.6 crore) while Sunrisers used the RTM card to buy back Amit Mishra (Rs. 4.75 crore) from Daredevils.

Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene was the only marquee player to remain unsold.

In the first session, franchises utilised seven right-to-match cards: Pietersen (Daredevils), Jacques Kallis (Knight Riders), Yusuf (Knight Riders), Faf du Plessis (Chennai Super Kings), Amit Mishra (Sunrisers), Darren Sammy (Sunrisers), Pragyan Ojha (Mumbai) were the players bought back by their previous IPL teams.

Moin Khan appointed Pakistan cricket coach

Pakistan on Tuesday appointed former captain Moin Khan as the head coach of the national team, replacing Australian Dav Whatmore whose two-year contract expired last month.

Khan, 42, was shortlisted along with another former captain and ex-coach Waqar Younis by a four-man committee which included former captain Javed Miandad, Intikhab Alam and Wasim Akram earlier this week.

The decision came after a lengthy management committee meeting under the chairmanship of Najam Sethi who replaced Zaka Ashraf on Monday.

The decision came as a blow to Younis who was regarded as favourite to regain the post he left in 2011 but Ashraf's sacking led to him not being selected.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed told reporters Khan will coach the team for this month's Asia Cup and next month's World Twenty20 -- both to be held in Bangladesh.

"Khan has been appointed head coach on the recommendations of the coach committee and since we have no cricket until October this year we will review his contract after the two tours," said Ahmed, the fourth member of the coach committee.

Khan said his top priority is to help the team defend the Asia Cup title it won in 2012.

"It's a big honour to coach the team," Khan told AFP. "It's a also a big responsibility and I would like the fans to support me.

"The first task is to win the Asia Cup," said Khan under whom Pakistan won the first of two Asia Cup titles in 2000. "We will do our best to lift the performance."

Khan played 69 Tests and 219 one-day internationals for Pakistan in the 1990s and 2000s. He has also coached the Pakistani and Indian domestic teams but never an international team.

Khan has been team manager since July this year. Former paceman Zakir Khan, a director in the PCB, takes over as manager for the two tours.

Pakistan had former Australian batsman Whatmore as head coach from March 2012 to last month.

Former opening batsman Shoaib Mohammad meanwhile has been appointed as fielding coach to replace Englishman Julian Fountain whose contract also expired last month.

Another former captain Zaheer Abbas was appointed "chief cricket consultant" and will accompany the team on tours, said Ahmed.

Abbas, known as Asia's Don Bradman, will be in charge of batting.

Former captain Aamir Sohail's appointment as chief selector last week was declared null and void, with former Test batsman Azhar Khan taking his place.

Bowling coach Mohammad Akram's contract is also renewed for another two years, said Ahmed.

Moin Khan named head coach

Pakistan have named former wicket-keeper batsman, Moin Khan as the head coach. He replaces Dav Whatmore, whose contract had not been extended.

Aamer Sohail, who was appointed as the chief selector just a week ago has been replaced by former cricketer, Azhar Khan. The latter will lead an interim selection committee. Sohail will continue with the other role that he had been given - that of director, game and development.

Both decisions were taken by an interim managing committee that had taken over after the sacking of Zaka Ashraf by the Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif.

Imran Khan criticises Pakistan cricket chief appointment

Former Pakistan captain turned politician Imran Khan Tuesday lashed out at the country's newly reappointed cricket chief, alleging he was being rewarded for helping the ruling party commit fraud in last year's general elections.

Najam Sethi, a prominent journalist who was also appointed as interim chief minister of the Punjab province during last year's election campaign, was reinstated as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman on Monday by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

His predecessor Zaka Ashraf was removed on charges of not running the board properly.

But Khan said that Sethi was being rewarded for helping to rig the result of the May elections, in which his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party won 35 of the 272 seats in the national parliament.

The PTI has launched legal challenges concerning the result in hundreds of constituencies at the national and provincial levels.

"When the election tribunal rules on them we will know... who fixed the puncture and who was rewarded with the gift of the PCB chairmanship," Khan told reporters.

"Fixing the punctures" refers to election rigging allegations.

Sethi denied the allegations.

"Whoever has been accusing me (of rigging in elections)... I will take legal actions against them," Sethi told reporters.

Khan also questioned whether Sethi, who is best known as the editor of the liberal Friday Times weekly newspaper, had enough cricketing knowledge for the post.

Sethi's reinstatement was the latest twist in a long running legal saga that saw Ashraf brought back as chief on January 15 by the Islamabad high court, eight months after he was originally removed over dubious elections in the PCB.

Sethi was appointed the caretaker chairman in the interim period.

Meanwhile, Ashraf's sacking was challenged in the Islamabad high court by two petitioners.

Sachin Tendulkar, one of cricket’s greatest heroes, and top scientist C.N.R. Rao were on Saturday named for the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

On a day when the ‘Master Blaster’ bade an emotional adieu to his record-breaking career lasting 24 years, the Prime Minister’s Office announced the Bharat Ratna for him. Sachin is the first sportsperson chosen for the honour.

The PMO also announced the award for Prof. Rao, a well recognised international authority in solid state and materials chemistry, who has published hundreds of research papers.

He is the third scientist, after C. V. Raman and the former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to be awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Both Sachin, 40, and Prof. Rao, 79, are also recipients of the Padma Vibhushan — second highest civilian honour. Soon after the announcement from the PMO, a communiqué from the Rashtrapati Bhavan said: “The President of India has been pleased to award the Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar and Prof. C.N.R. Rao.”

England hope to Bounce Back

And so England's nightmares in Australia continue. They were crushed in the Tests, decimated in the ODIs and the streak of defeats continued in the shortest format of the game despite late heroics from Ravi Bopara. England will now need to win the second game in Melbourne on Friday to keep the T20 series alive.

Australia: Cameron White replaced David Warner at the top and partnered Aaron Finch to launch a brutal assault on England's bowlers. White blasted 75 while Finch cracked 52 as Australia piled on a huge 213 off their 20 overs. England's late charge was neutralised by Nathan Coulter-Nile, who picked up 4/30, once again highlighting the gap between the two cricketing arch-rivals this summer.

Australia have recalled the experienced Brad Hodge after a gap of six years to further bolster their middle-order. The most successful T20 batsman in the world, Hodge last played for Australia in a T20 game against Zimbabwe on Fenruary 1, 2008.

Key Players: Finch and White will be dangerous at the top as will Glenn Maxwell, who missed out in the run fest in Hobart. Also watch out for the 39-year-old Hodge, who returns after six years.

England: Another shoddy performance. Yes, the scorecard at the end of the game said England came within 13 runs of their massive target but the truth is their chase had lost win much earlier, when they were reeling at 51/4 off 6.3 overs. Only a late assault by Ravi Bopara (65 not out off 27 balls) helped England finish with some semblance of respect.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground will be another challenge for the English bowlers, who will be desperate to stem the flow of runs from the Australian batsmen. England will also hope to get a good start at the top of the order for the likes of Bopara, Butler and Morgan to open up later on.

Key Players: Bopara will be a prized wicket for Australia, who will also be wary of Eoin Morgan and Jos Butler, two England batsmen, who were in very good form during the ODIs. Chris Broad had a good first game with the ball but the England captain will be eager to chip in with the bat as well.

The IPL teams are all set to enter his best player auctions this season. Among the top foreign cricketers up for sale next month in Bangalore are the likes of David Warner, Kevin Pietersen, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Quinton de Cock, Corey Anderson, Steve Smith, Aaron Flinch, Faf du Plesis, Morne Morkel and Dwain Smith. Each of these players are expected to a good price.

India players like Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay would also be up for good grabs. And the teams have set aside big budgets for them. IPL official said, adding that the Indian board will start talking with the players before deciding their base price next week.

The top draws of Indian batting like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir have already been retained by their respective teams. And among the foreigners, Chris Gayle, Ab de Villers and Shane Watson have also retained their places.

In the fast bowling department, South Africa's Dale Steyn (Sunrisers), Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga (Mumbai) and Australia's James Faulker (Rajasthan Royals) are also retained. However, there is no Indian pacer bowlers figure in the retention list. From from veteran Zaheer Khan to Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Vinay Kumar, are all available in the auction.

In the spin-department the story is somewhat different. Top offies — Harbhajan Singh (Mumbai) and R Ashwin (Chennai) — have been retained. West Indies' Sunil Narine is the only foreign spinner retained by Kolkata Knight Riders.

In the allrounder category, teams have also retained Indian cricketers like Stuart Binny and Ravindra Jadeja while the foreigners' list has Mumbai's Kieron Pollard and Chennai's Dwayne Bravo. IPL says that the teams can buy more allrounders from the auction.

The governing body of the richest T20 league seems optimistic about the auction. "There are enough players to buy for the teams, who are looking to form a good team," a top IPL official said.

Cheteshwar Arvind Pujara (born 25 January 1988, in Gujarat) is an Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman who plays for Saurashtra in domestic cricket and for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Indian Premier League (IPL). Pujara made his first-class debut for Saurashtra in December 2005 and made his Test debut at Bangalore in October 2010.

He was a part of the India A team which toured England in the 2010 summers, and was the highest scorer of the tour. In October 2011, the BCCI awarded him a C-grade national contract. Known to have a sound technique and the temperament required to play long innings, he was one of the contenders for a spot in the Indian middle order after the retirement of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

His Test comeback came against New Zealand in August 2012, scoring a century. He made his first double hundred against England at Ahmedabad in November 2012 and followed up with another double hundred against Australia in March 2013, both the times steering India to victory and becoming man of the match. In the 2012 NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, he was the highest scorer with two centuries and one half century. He became one of the fastest batsman to reach 1000 runs in Test cricket in just 11 matches and his 18th Test Innings. He won the Emerging Cricketer of the Year 2013.

Mohammad Hafeez (born 17 October 1980 in Sargodha, Punjab) is a Pakistani cricket player. He is currently the captain of Pakistan national cricket team in the T20 format. He is a right-handed opening batsman and a right-arm offspin bowler. Hafeez usually opens the batting and forms part of the bowling attack. In 2012-2013, he has been ranked as the top all-rounder by the ICC Player Rankings in T20 format. He is known for his intelligent batting but also for aggressive shot plays when needed. His batting technique is the same as that of Rahul Dravid. He was involved in record opening partenrship of 224 runs with Nasir Jamshed. As a player, Hafeez gives the team plenty of options: he usually bats aggressively at the top of the order, but his organised technique also means he can switch to defensive mode if required. He doesn't flight his offbreaks much, but his excellent control over line and length allows the captain to use him at almost any stage of an innings. To be short and precise, he adds a combo mix to the Pakistani side. He is also one of the better fielders in the Pakistan team, especially in the point region.

He was the fourth international player signed to the Caribbean Premier League and the first Pakistani player to be named to the new Twenty20 tournament. He is widely regarded as The Professor. The major teams which he played are Pakistan, Faisalabad, Faisalabad Wolves, Guyana Amazon Warriors, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sargodha, Sui Gas Corporation of Pakistan.
