This episode of Old Time Radio Highlights is from the popular sitcom Our Miss Brooks. It ran from 1948 to 1955, and it stars Eve Arden, Gale Gordon, and Richard Crenna.

Our Miss Brooks revolves around the life of Connie Brooks, played by Eve Arden. She is a high school teacher that is beloved by her students, and hated by her Principle. She is also hopelessly in love with a fellow teacher named Phillip Boyton.

Our Miss Brooks is easily one of the funniest shows of all time. If your a fan of classic sitcoms like I Love Lucy, or The Honeymooners then you will love Our Miss Brooks.

Chocolate, AKA Fury, is a 2008 Thai martial arts action/drama directed by Prachya Pinkaew. It stars Yanin “Jeeja" Vismistananda, Hiroshi Abe, Taphon Phopwandee, Ammara Siripong, and Pongpat Wachirabunjong.

The story of Chocolate follows Zen, played by Yanin "Jeeja" Vismistananda. She is an autistic woman that has learned martial arts by copying Tony Jaa martial arts movies (FYI, they are excellent), and by copying the muay thai students from an academy next door. She is the daughter of Masashi, a yakuza boss, and Zin, the ex girlfriend of Thai gangster No. 8. Zin, Zen, and an orphan named Moom live together. When Zin gets cancer, Moom and Zen start collecting debts on behave of Zin. The problem is that, unknowing, Moom and Zen collect debts from people under the protection of No. 8. Unhappy about this, No. 8 sends Zin a “message”. Now Zin has no choice but to contact Masashi, hoping that he can get them out of the country in time.

The action in this movie is some of the best that I’ve ever seen. If you’re a fan of late 80’s-early 90’s Jackie Chan, then you will love the fight sequences in this movie. You get 1 Vs many fights that utilize their environment to create really fun and exciting fights. Take Jackie Chan’s First strike, or Policy Story 2, and add Tony Jaa’s mix of Muay thai type of striking with traditional kung fu. That’s what you have here. The last 30 minutes of the movie are especially note worthy. It’s one kick ass fight after another, each transitioning flawlessly into the next while upping the ante.

Fans of John Woo’s Hong Kong work will also find a lot to like here. The direction is pretty similar to Hard Boiled, or The Killer. The movie is shot in a stylized way that is trademark of Asian action cinema, slow motion, camera angles and lighting not seen in Hollywood, etc. The tone of the movie is what you would expect from a gritty action drama. It’s dark and sad at times, but it balances that out with a lot of fun fighting and few funny character moments.

The acting in the movie is pretty good. The best performance in the movie is probably Zin, played by Ammara Siripong. We see transition from crime boss eye candy, to mother, to cancer patient. She’s believable in all of her roles. Jeeja also does a good job in the role of Zen, although you will notice her more for her fighting than her acting. No.8’s squad of bad guys is also full of memorable characters. The best is probably Priscilla the transvestite. Kill Bill Volume 3 needs to have a transvestite henchman in honor of this movie. Overall, none of the performances will blow your mind, but you will find a lot of likeable and cool characters.

The weak spot of the movie is the writing. Character motivations don’t make a lot of sense. You will ask yourself “how could she not notice that?” or “why would he do that?” a few times during this movie. Lucky for us the movie moves at a fast and smooth enough paste that plot holes don’t ruin it. Stock characters are another minor issue. Like I mentioned before the actors do a good job, but you’ve seen these characters in a million different movies before (well, Pricilla is the exception).

Overall I give this movie 4 out of 5. It does have some weak writing, but it’s easy to forgive it when you take into account the top notch action, great direction, and decent acting. If you are tired of boring weak Hollywood CIG action sequences (I’m looking at you Green Hornet), then you need to do yourself a favor and check out this movie.

Like Hong Kong cinema in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and Japanese cinema in the late 90’s and early 00’s, Thailand is coming out with a lot of interesting movies that more people need to check out.

The Wolfen is a 1981 horror movie directed by Michael Wadleigh. It stars Albert Finney, Diane Venora, Gregory Hines, and Edward James Olmos. This movie is based on a novel by Whitley Strieber.

Is this movie a horror classic, or a total miss?

The movie follows detective Dewey Wilson, played by Albert Finney. He is a down on his luck hardboiled detective with a history of alcoholism. He has been assigned to a case about series of bizarre murders, one of which is the murder of one of the richest business men in the country. What makes the murders so bizarre is that they appear to be done by animals. Albert is teaming up with police psychologist Rebecca Neff, played by Diane Venora, to solve these murders.

This movie is probably not what you would expect. I’m guessing that because of the title, and the release date, most of you will assume that this is simply An American Werewolf in London knock off. If that is the case then you are incorrect. This movie is quite different. It’s really more of a violent police procedural with horror, sci-fi, and fantasy elements in it. The tone of the movie is very serious, and dark.

The direction of this movie is a mixed bag. Movie is shot well, and the violence in the movie is pretty graphic. The gore in the movie looks great. The acting performances from most of the actors are fine, but the lead is a bit bland. Albert Finney’s performance is just there. You’ll feel like you’ve seen this character in a millions different movies, and many of them have been done better.

Another negative from the movie’s direction is the P.O.V shots from the villains. They use a special camera filter, similar to The Predator that has not aged well. It looks like a bad Photoshop filter. I’m sure that when this movie came out it was a neat effect, but today it just looks cheesy. It’s a shame because the rest of the movie feels true to life.

The movie’s script is also a mix of good and bad. The good is that the movie’s plot is interesting. The movie takes itself very seriously, which works in its favor. The script is full of detective work, Native American folklore, forensic science, and psychology. The main problem with the script is that it’s too long for its own good. The movie is almost 2 hours long, although it only has about 1:30 of interesting material. After an interesting beginning the movie slows down to a crawl in the middle. Even for a police procedural this movie is slow.

Another major problem with the movie is the ending. Frankly, it’s morally reprehensible. I won’t spoil it, but the lesson that this movie is trying to teach is bizarre. Not to mention that even if you take the moral out of the equation, the ending doesn’t resolve anything. It’s just clunky and illogical.

Overall, this movie is more interesting than good. The premise of the movie is interesting. Many elements of the movie are well executed, but the slow pacing and poor ending ruin the movie. Overall I give it 2 out of 5. You could do worse, but unless you’re a diehard Wolf, werewolf, or horror fan then you are better off skipping this one.

David Cronenberg interview

This is a great interview with David Cronenberg in which he talks about his firm feature film, Shivers. It was directed by Sam Raimi. He is best known for the Evil Dead trilogy, the Spiderman trilogy, and Drag Me to Hell. This movie has a star studded cast which includes Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Blossom, Keith David, Gary Sinise, and Lance Henriksen.

The plot of the movie revolves around a gunfight tournament in the town of Redemption. The tournament is financed by John Herod, played by Gene Hackman, who is an outlaw who runs the town with an iron grip. He is the deadliest gunslinger in the old west, and a participant in the tournament. The main character of the story is The Lady, play by Sharon Stone. She has a score to settle with John Herod, so she entered the tournament to get even. Others in the tournament include Cort, play by Russell Crowe. He is a preacher and a former outlaw who has promised never to kill again. He is being forced to join the tournament by John Herod. The Kid is played by Leonardo DiCaprio. He is a brash and cocky shooter. He joined the tournament to get respect from his father, John Herod.

I have give Sharon Stone credit, she is excellent in this movie. Before this film I had only seen her in a few movies: Basic Instinct 1 and 2, Total Recall, and The Specialist. In all of those movies her performances have been passable, but that’s about it. She wasn’t horrible, but beyond her looks she didn’t stand out. So I dismissed her as just another pretty face that came and went. But I guess I was wrong. In this movie she shows acting range: The Lady is strong yet scared. Although she is a badass, she is over her head, and she knows it. It’s not an easy performance, but she pulls it off. It only makes me wonder if Sharon Stone was a victim of type casting.

The rest of the cast is great in their roles. Gene Hackman is always awesome in everything that he does. Leonardo DiCaprio is a good fit for the cocky kid, although he looks like he’s 15 in this movie. Russell Crowe gives better and most likeable performances. The movie is also filled with a lot of great background characters: a Native American that can’t die via gunshot, a trick shooter played by Lance Henriksen, a badass bounty hunter played by Keith David. You’ll defiantly find quite a few likeable characters in this movie.

So if this movie is so awesome, why did it bomb? Well, I think that it has to do with the greatest strength and weakness of this movie: it’s directed by Sam Raimi. Like all of Sam Raimi’s work it’s a greatly entertaining cartoon. Its fun, it’s full of great characters, and it doesn’t follow the laws of physics. Today’s audiences are more receptive to this style, for example Drag Me to Hell was a hit, but this type of movie simply wasn’t cool in the mid 90’s. After all this was right in the middle of the Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger era. I’m pretty sure that if this movie came out today it would be way more successful. The stiff competition from Billy Madison and The Brady Bunch Movie during the opening weekend, and the fact that westerns didn’t do well during the 90’s didn’t help either.

Overall I can’t praise this movie enough. If you like spaghetti westerns then you’ll like this movie. If you like revenge flicks then you’ll like this movie. If you just want to see a fun, and entertaining action flick then you’ll love this movie. My rating for it is 5 out 5. This is a movie that is just begging to have a cult following.

It was directed by Bong Joon-ho, and it stars Song Kang-ho, Byeon Hee-bong, Park Hae-il, Bae Doona, and Ko Ah-seong. The movie is a mix of horror, comedy, and drama.

The movie follows the Park family. Gang-du is a loser who works at a grocery shack along with his dad, Hee-bong. He lives with his daughter, Hyun-seo. He also has a sister named Nam-joo, who a professional archer, and a drunken brother named Nam-il. The grocery shack is located on the river bank of the Han River, which is a popular local spot. One day a giant amphibian monster attacks the people hanging out by the river. The monster is a mutant that was created by the pollution of the Han River. During the attack Gang-du tries to fight off the monster, but fails, and his daughter Hyun-seo is capture by the monster. To make things worse we find out that the Monster is the host of a virus, which means that the park family has to stay quarantined. On top of that the authorities believe that Hyun-seo is dead, although she manages to call Gang-du on his cell phone a few hours after the attack. So it’s up to the park family to break out of guaranty, and rescue Hyun-seo.

The strongest part of this movie is the direction. It is outright brilliant. The movie manages to keep its horror, comedy, and drama elements well balanced. Although the movie does have some really silly scenes, it doesn’t get in the way of the horror or the drama of the situation. All the actors fill their roles well, and the beautiful cinematography also helps to hide some of the slightly weak, by late 2010-early 2011 standards, CGI.

Monster movie purist might be turned off by the fact that the monster is not done by practical effects, but I think that it works better this way. This is not a Godzilla movie. There is nothing tongue-in-cheek about The Host monster. Yes the movie has comedy, but it’s never related to the Monster. When the monster appears on camera you are meant to fear it (especially late in the movie), so the knowledge that the monster is a guy in a rubber suite would have ruined that. Also, the movie uses the CGI to its full potential. The Host is a small (by giant movie monster standards), and fast creature that moves and acts like an animal, and it has a particular habit that has to be done with CGI. There is no way to make The Host monster look good with practical effect.

The biggest weak point of this movie is the writing. The plot of the movie is very contrived. There are some logic holes in the story, and some pretty hardcore plot conveniences. The movie is also pretty predictable. That’s not a big movie sin, but you should probably keep in mind that you can probably imagine how most of it goes. Overall the writing doesn’t kill the movie, but it does take it down a notch.

Overall I give The Host a 4 out 5. It’s refreshing to see a straight monster movie. It works well as a horror movie, and it has some funny scenes. I just wish that the script had another rewrite so that I could recommend it even more highly.

Fear on Film Interview

A really good interview with David Cronenberg, John Carpenter and John Landis.

Welcome to Old Time Radio Highlights. Last time I highlighted Dimension X, a popular adult Sci-Fi series from the early 1950’s. But Dimension X was not the first adult Sci-Fi radio series. That honor goes to 2000 Plus, and let me tell you it sucks. If you enjoy classics such as Plan 9 From Outer Space and Teenagers From Outer Space you will love this show. It has it all: predictions of the future that are completely off, 40 year olds voicing teenagers, laughably bad science, etc. Even the sound effects sound cheap.

The episode that I’m highlighting is called “The Men From Mars.” It aired on March 29, 1950, and it’s the earliest surviving show of 2000 Plus. Enjoy riffing this one.

Alfred Hitchcock interview on The Dick Cavett Show

Enjoy this great interview with Alfred Hitchcock

The movie stars Rutger Hauer who is best known for Blade Runner and The Hitcher, Matthew Broderick, and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The reason why Etienne saved Philippe is that he needs Philippe to show him how to sneak into the castle of the Bishop. Etienne wants to murder the Bishop because of what he did to him. Out of jealousy, the Bishop used a monk with magical powers to put a curse on Etienne and his lover, Isabeau d'Anjou, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. By day Etienne is a human and Isabeau is a Hawk, and by knight Isabeau is a human and Etienne is a wolf. Basically “they are always together, but eternally apart.” Can our heroes find a way to break the curse, and get revenge on the Bishop of Aquila? Well, you’ll have to see the movie to find out.

Let me just say that Rutger Hauer’s portrayal of Etienne might be my favorite hero in any fantasy movie. The man looks exactly like a badass knight who carries around a huge claymore sword, and hands out justice by impaling villains left and right. This is an extremely difficult role because the character of Etienne has to balance heroics, vengeance, and heart break. We have to believe that he can kick ass, and we have to believe that he is in a permanent state of sorrow without becoming emo or dislikable. I can safely say that Rutger Hauer nails this role to perfection. It’s right up there with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan. Except that Etienne is more complex than Conan.

At the other end of the spectrum is Matthew Broderick’s portrayal of Philippe “The Mouse”. How I wish that I was exaggerating when I say that Philippe is basically a really annoying version of Ferris Bueller with a silly accent. Not only is the accent unnecessary since most of the other actors speak like Americans (it’s a fantasy movie so I’m OK with that), but it’s a weird mix between English and French. The fact that the accent completely disappears for long parts of the movie doesn’t help either. P.S. Philippe constantly talks to himself. You will want to kill him.

The rest of the cast fill their roles well. Michelle Pfeiffer is strong yet tragic in the role of Isabeau. Although she is not a warrior she can defend herself a bit. John Wood also did a good job in the role of the Bishop of Aquila, although he is barely in the movie. Several of the Bishop’s henchmen are cool in their own right. The cinematography of the movie is also excellent, but that’s to be expected from a Richard Donner movie. The production quality for the movie is what you would expect from a good mid 80’s fantasy movie.

Oh yeah, one more thing, why does this movie have a funky soundtrack?! Take a second, look at images in this review, look at everything that I’ve written, and try to imagine what the score for this movie sounds like. I guarantee that it doesn’t sound anything like the actual film score, and let me tell you that the film score sounds horrible. It’s basically an 80’s electro/progressive rock soundtrack. I fully expected to see a cameo from Rush in this movie. It’s that off. The soundtrack, even more so than Matthew Broderick, kills this movie.

Overall, this movie is very disappointing. It has so many great aspects to it, but a couple of pieces of it are so off that they completely kill this movie. My final rating is a 2 out of 5. If they release a director’s cut with a new score, I’ll change my score to a 3 out of 5.

Welcome to Old Time Radio Highlights. Once a week I will be highlighting an episode of a classic radio show from the golden age of radio(1930's to 1960's).

This week I'm highlighting an episode from Dimension: X, a popular SciFi series that featured 30 minute short stories. The story in this episode is "A logic named Joe". This story is especially interesting because it predicts modern computers and the internet decades before the internet was invented. Dimension X aired from April 1950 to September 1951. A logic named Joe first aired on July 1st, 1951.

History geeks may also get a kick out of the first 30 seconds of this program. This episode of Dimension X aired during the early days of the Korean war, and the first 30 seconds are a news bullentin giving us the latest update from the front line.

Well my name is Juan, AKA Endless, and I am a movie fan. Critique the screen is going to be a movie blog, with text reviews, interesting links, trailers, top list, and more. The blog itself will be updated at least once a day, and text reviews will be posted at least once a week.

For text reviews, I will be using a 5 point rating scale:
5- A must see movie. Most people will enjoy it, and everyone should watch it.
4- Strongly recommended. Maybe not for everyone, but most people should watch it.
3- Good, but not great. It's good, but you don't need to go out of your way to see it.
2- Bad. Unless it looks appealing to you, avoid it.
1-Horrible. A cinematic crime against humanity. Avoid at all cost.
It's an intelligent, crazy, and oddly charming movie that takes risk in order to create a unique experience.

The story revolves around a group of scientist that have invented a machine called the DC-Mini. The DC-Mini allows someone to go inside another person's dream. In theory the machine can be used to treat any number of psychological, or psychiatric ailments. The main character is Dr.Chiba; the head of the team that created the DC-Mini. She has assumed the alter ego of Paprika, and has been illegally using the DC-Mini to treat patients outside of work.Unfortunately for Dr.Chiba, a prototype of the DC-Mini has been stolen by a rogue member of the science team. They must get it back before the program is canceled, or before things start going horribly wrong.

The main theme of the movie is dreams, both in a literal and figurative way. In the literal sense the movie manages to capture the oddity, and randomness of dreams. They have a certain whimsical quality; like a rhyme without a reason. Kind of like Disney's Alice in Wonderland, only turned up to 11. In a figurative sense, the topic of how dreams relate to people is explored via the main characters. For example, a career driven woman who creates an alter-ego in order to live out her fantasies, a geek too blinded by his dreams to act responsibly, a man that lives with regrets because he turned he's back on his dreams, etc.

Paprika is a really beautiful anime. Granted, a lot of people don't like anime as a style, but if you don't have any prejudice against anime then you will absolutely love the visuals of this movie. The dreams are lively and colorful, characters are well designed, but where this movie really shines is the cinematography. The animation has a crazy level of detail, and the action, despite being extremely complex, is really fluent. You will want to watch this movie multiple times just so you can catch things that you missed upon first viewing.

The sound track is also note worthy. It's done by Susumu Hirasawa, a legend of Japanese techno-pop and electronica. Paprika's main theme is just awesome. I can't understand a single word of it, but I totally got lost in it. The song sounds oddly familiar, and yet unlike anything I've heard before.

Sadly, Paprika is not perfect. It does a few faults that bring a near masterpiece down a level. The main problem is the technobabel. A lot of people have said that Paprika has a difficult plot, but that's not really the case. I managed to summaries the basic plot in a single paragraph. No, the main problem is that the movie has way too many scientific terms that it likes to throw at the audience, in rapid succession, without giving the audience any time to take the general idea in. It is way too easy to loose track of the plot just because you are still trying to wrap your head around the mind-something-whatever that the characters were talking about a minute ago. Personally, I'm a sci-fi geek with years of technobabel immunity to protect me, but the average person probably isn't.

A smaller problem that may turn off the audience is the fact that this movie is, for better or for worse, a pure dose of anime. This goes beyond art style. Anime as a storytelling medium is full of strange qualities that may not appeal to the average movie goer. Stuff like adult subject matter in a cartoon, a complex plot, characters that aren't cookie cutter "good guys" and "bad guys". Just keep in mind; Grandma may not enjoy a cartoon with a nude lady in it, and a teen whose into Twilight may not appreciate the subtleties of Paprika.

Overall, I loved Paprika. It has everything that I could ask for in a sci-fi movie, and the visuals are amazing. It may not have universal appeal, but it really is a work of art. My final rating is a 4 out of 5.
