First, the history re: Chinese & Japanese during WWII & when the Japanese took over China is SPOT ON. Also everything until the 1950’s is completely accurate, and I really appreciated that. Second, I truly have mixed reactions to this book! I loved the way Pearl and May were complete opposites , yet Pearl was such a ‘poor poor me’ and technically so was May in her own world, the same. But with as many pages/hours were in ‘Shanghai Girls’ it nearly drove me to jump out a window with all the hardships they go through!! I got to a point where I said to myself, “NOBODY could have endured all of this!”

I also hated the graphic visions to, it really bothered me, and not in a way where I didn’t know..in a way where I thought it was too much. There are a lot of other things that I thought were either too much or not enough, that’s why I said I had a mixed review, and I’m really not sure how I truly feel?!

If I had known there was a part 2 to this novel I may not have read it, because the end was not satisfying enough to stand alone, in fact not at all, but I didn’t figure that out until the last 20 min...giving this story a 3.8 is pretty generous.

Like I said, it was spot on to what Chinese woman and families went through, but I’m just not the happiest finishing it either. As far as recommended, you need to know it’s graphic for that period of time.

I chose this rating because I was fascinated by the story. The Chinese culture, lifestyle with extended families, and the history of "paper sons, wives and partners " was interesting and unknown to me. I found the characters likeable and I was eager to understand and to learn about them as they progressed through their lives. I have just purchased "Dreams of Joy" to continue to follow the sisters and their daughter. Thank you Lisa See for another lovely novel, though difficult to tolerate the injustices incurred you manage to keep these sisters' dignity, individual strengths, and vulnerability respectable throughout the story.
Such a sad, heartbreaking, cultural, heartwarming, interesting and makes you on edge!!! Although it is really sad it just reminds us that we don't really understand what war does to civilians and innocent people. Really eye opening and makes you really get into the book and the characters. Some Romance, Wont go into details, you'll just have to buy it and read for yourself.
Shanghai Girls by Lisa See got thumbs-up from our book club. Growing up in Shanghai, May and Pearl Chin are both models for Z.G. Li, a painter and photographer, whom they both fall in love with. As "beautiful girls," the sisters live a life of parties and glamour until their father loses the family fortune and sells the girls to prospective husbands. The girls refuse and during the Japanese invasion of Shanghai in 1937, they attempt to cross the countryside to make their escape. Along the way they have a horrific encounter with Japanese soldiers. Brace yourself. It's a disturbing scene that's not for the faint of heart.

Eventually they make it to America and are interned at Angel Island for a long time. In order to stay in America, the sisters marry the Louie brothers who are strangers to them. In Los Angeles Chinatown, under one roof they find that life is very challenging with racial and financial struggles. Slowly they assimilate to their new family and carve out very different lives. Pearl is the responsible one. She and her husband raise baby Joy while still meeting the familial obligations to Louie's parents. May's new husband is mentally impaired, very childlike, and she seeks out a more self-centered lifestyle.

The book is fast paced enough, but at the very end, hang on for a ride, because it goes at warp speed. There's a lot going on with when now grown-up daughter, Joy, discovers past cover-ups and lies, false family ties, and the identity of her real parents. It ends with Joy running off to communist China. At that point our book club smelled a sequel, and sure enough a couple years later Dreams of Joy was published.
I suspect with over 500 reviews anything i have to say will be redundant, however having just traveled to Shanghai, walked the Bund, and visited the 19th century "concessions," I may have something to add. Let me begin with a suggestion that readers may also choose to rent/purchase a documentary called "Shanghai Ghetto." While in Shanghai, we visited a little-known ghetto devoted to German Jews who who sought refuge in China just before and during WWII. The visuals in this documentary serve to enlighten the images that author, Lisa See, so adeptly describes in Shanghai Girls.
The story of these young women and their families is extremely well told. It is filled with tragedy and hope. What better ending could one ask for, in a time of world war and extreme racial profiling. It rivals The Good Earth, but focuses on the middle/upper middle class Chinese -- not the peasants that are so well detailed in Pearl S. Buck's well known novel. Both writers are very adept at character development ... to the point that the reader knows them so well ... they must surely live next door.
If you like historical fiction, you'll love this. I don't know much about the Chinese experience in the United States, and it tells a lot. Provocative. It made me think about my family relationships. This one is primarily about 2 sisters, but it could be about any family relationship. It also made me think about prejudice. I could really empathize with the characters in the book.

I love David Levithan's books, this one included. My only second thought on this particular story is that the setting is so completely unrealistic. My young gay friend said the same thing - if only a high school and community really responded like this to gay kids, life would be great. But it doesn't, so while it's a fun read, it's also a little disappointing if you're looking for something a little more true-to-life. Definitely something to aspire to for those of us in public education, though. Kids with gender and sexual identity questions can always find some hope and fun in Levithan's works. I book talk his work frequently, and kids love his books.

Paul has it pretty easy. The high school sophomore discovered and accepted his homosexuality at an early age, his parents love him the way he is, and he apparently attends one of the most liberal high schools in America. The football team’s star quarterback is a drag queen, who is also elected homecoming queen. Paul has a close circle of friends, which includes his gal-pal Joni and Tony, who in sharp contrast has fundamentalist parents that are trying to pray his gay away.

However, while Paul may be free from many of the more unpleasant issues often faced by gay teens, his life is far from uncomplicated. As “Boy Meets Boy” opens, Paul has a chance encounter with Noah, a new kid at school who takes his breath away. Paul has had boyfriends before, but nobody he felt as strongly about as he does for Noah. And, apparently the feelings are mutual, but things don’t go smoothly for our hero, as his life gets even more complicated and he has to struggle to win Noah’s heart.

I usually avoid books labeled “Young Adult” (YA). I’m definitely not young, and I’m not really crazy about the adult part either, but this book came highly recommended so I decided to give it a try. Told in the first person by Paul, the story starts out a little over the top, with the boy discovering he is gay in kindergarten and running as the first openly gay class president of the third grade. By the time you get to the cheer-leading squad on Harleys, you’re most likely at the whatever stage of just going with it. Oddly, it’s right about this point that the tone gets a little more restrained.

While the writing remains relatively breezy throughout, the tone does get more somber as Paul faces some real challenges in trying to balance the demands of his friends, his budding romance and being in high school. While Paul faces many of the typical issues of being a teen in love, the story is thankfully free of all the angst that usually makes YA books so avoidable. Yes, he has the occasional moment of doubt, but he never sits on the fence for long. The characters may not grab you, but they won’t bore you either.

That the characters didn’t grab me, I put down to the enormous difference between us, both in terms of age and experience. It’s been a very, very long time since I was in high school, and that was back in the dark ages when those of us who were gay generally tried to blend in as much as possible. There were no openly gay students in my rather large suburban high school, so Paul’s world is something I have a hard time even imagining. Paul’s world is so far removed from my own that it almost reads like speculative fiction, rather than simply an exaggerated view of what the world can be like for teenagers today.

The beginning didn't feel like a David Levithan novel. His books always have been so grounded and real to me. This started out kind of ridiculous and outrageous. Many of the characters were larger than life. The city it takes place in also seemed nonrealistic. The high school contains a cheerleader biker gang, a high school cover band, and a few drag queens. All of the high school characters seem very sure of themselves. It felt like adult situations just transplanted into a high school and even earlier with stories that go as far back as elementary school. But I think Levithan did this all purposefully.

About 80% into the book I finally understood why Levithan created a world like this. With the protagonist "having it easy" it creates a unique lens to look at other gay youth in different situations. The chapter entitled "Tony" had me on the verge of tears.

This was David Levithan's first published book and I think you can tell. Many of his signatures are just beginning to emerge. The wit and charm of his writing are there. Unique, quirky, and random still describes his writing, but his writing has grown in his more recent books.

I did enjoy this book and I give it a 4/5. But, if you are looking for a modern gay story you should read "Two Boys Kissing". If you are looking for depth and conversations of sexuality, gender, and individuality you should read "Every Day". I will continue to consume as much of David Levithan's writing as I can.
One of my favorite books in a very long time. Ok, so this was a little too much perfection. I can’t imagine that this town will ever exist, & quite frankly I don’t want it to (I have no use for all the intolerant vegan nazis). That said, this is fiction & was a nice little escape to la-la land. There was even just the right amount of reality involved. I got the 10th anniversary edition which answered a lot of questions. One thing that stood out to me was that the character Tony was based on a song about a boy who committed suicide & this book was an attempt at changing his outcome.
Also I absolutely loved the ending! It was so perfect leaving them all out in the clearing together rather than a typical prom scene ending.
I really can’t say enough good about this book!

First, you start off with a stunning book cover that makes you say WOW! The way the Author contrive this book "Greek mythology meets The 20st century". I loved it.

Psyche's character was lovely, strong, courageous and pure at heart. A few bad decisions, but hey don't we all. She was willing to climb mountains to prove her love for Eros. Love was the bridge for this story and done in a beautiful way. I simply adored it. It was refreshing, corky, over all a beautiful.
Be carful poking your finger in a bad boy's chest, and saying never. He might just turned out to be the love of your life!

Now lets move to Eros :) He starts out a hurt arrogant jerk. Little disrespectful (holding up my thumb and finger) to his mother, because she tries to set him up with Psyche. However, over time, he finds himself consumed with love for her. Now he is turning magnanimous. Now he sincerely loves her, even if he had a tad accident with his arrow LOL. He will do anything to keep his mother from finding out. She wants to destroy Psyche now, for turning Eros down. What a tangled web we weave.

Who doesn't love a good old fashion dysfunctional family? The "Mother" of a Mama's Boy *giggle*! Jessie Harrell, did a wonderful job adding twist and turns in this book, that will make sure you do not get to bored. Jessie, has Eros and Psyche go through controversy and trials to get to the outcome, together or not! I am not telling. You will just have to read it. This Story was published in 2011, I can not believe every teenager doesn't have a copy!

Why I picked it

There are two main reasons why I wanted to read this book.

1. The cover completely caught my eye. I mean seriously. How gorgeous is it? It's so evocative and romantic looking. I don't think they could have caught a more perfect picture for this cover. The soft hues and purples look so...relaxing.

2. Because I am infatuated with the legend of Psyche and Cupid (Eros).

I was lucky enough to go to Europe for my high school senior class trip. The trip was for 12 days and we got to go to England, France, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. To me, the best part of the trip was when we got to go to the Louvre.

As I was wandering the castle, I passed through the sculpture area and a certain sculpture captured my attention.

That's right. It's THE Psyche and Eros. It was my favorite sculpture in the museum. I took a goofy picture with it (and no I won't be posting it ;) ) and I bought a print of it from the gift shop.

When I heard about this story I was immediately excited to pick it up and read.

Of course I had other books that needed my attention first, but this always was in the back of my mind.

What did I think?

It was really, really good. I loved all the Greek mythology in it. Psyche's character was so easy to fall in love with. She had such a great personality and was willing to go through EVERYTHING for the ones she loved.

Eros was a kick in the pants. ;) I loved him and he seemed so dreamy. Except when his temper got the best of him. His deep blue eyes and golden hair...*sighs*

This book was an easy read and was highly enjoyable. It is surely one I will read again. Jessie Harrell did a great job with story and I liked her own twist to it.

So I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Now for a few snippets (this is my favorite part ;) )

"I was alone with my crowd. Their constant, muted rumble played like the song of my heart. An endless rise and fall with no definition. Like a shape without sides. And though the sound pulsed and writhed to its own rhythm, the dullness made it feel unreal."

"This was my life--all around me in this palace. My future was in these walls. Invisible servants, mostly-invisible suitor? Boyfriend? I didn't even know what we were supposed to be to each other."

"He might not have control over the waters, but the heat rolling off his body was strong enough to cross the space between us. As I met his eyes, his head dipped forward. My heart stuttered in my chest and my throat seemed to close tight. Was this fear or desire? His nose brushed mine as he leaned dangerously close and I felt his breath tease and tickle my lips."

"Your love has wings, Psyche," Hera said, waving he hand through the air and fluttering her fingers as she spoke.
I first read the tale about Psyche and Cupid getting his comeuppance, or a taste of his own medicine, while reading Aphrodite's Blessings Love Stories from the Greek Myths by Clemence McLaren. The other two stories of that book I already knew but not Psyche's. I found her story to be so mysterious and then to discover her suitor/ husband was Eros/ Cupid! Therefore, I had been wanting to read another retelling for a while. I loved Destined. Jessie Harrell took an ancient Greek/Roman tale and while keeping it set in ancient Greece, added modern life to it. Another reviewer mentioned the modern dialogue and that is certainly in there. I found myself laughing at Eros and Psyche sounding like people of today! I would highly recommend this book to lovers of Greek Mythology, Love Stories, or YA!

Oh boy, oh boy - fun ensues. When Gideon Horn, The Pirate Lord, runs into Sara, he considers leaving her behind but changes his mind when he realizes she's the stepsister of an earl. He can't stand aristocrats and has made it his life's work to cause them as much trouble on the high seas as he possibly can. He has his own reasons which have to do with his origins, but the reader doesn't learn that part of the story until a ways into the book.

Sara is hilarious as she matches her stiff rumped persona against Gideon. Funny stuff going on in this book. Gideon soon realizes he didn't count all the costs of gathering so many women together at one time, while trying to match them up with their "husbands" even as Sara challenges him on every single front. Very shortly, she's like clay in his hands and vice versa. Sabrina Jeffries can write some stories. I loved Gideon and in the end, he gets everything he's always wanted, even though it's a bit overdue.

Everything you love in a pirate story complete with some extras! I thought I knew exactly what was going to evolve here but was in for a great surprise! This book is the perfect escape from "today's stress" and is well-worth the time and money to read it. It has characters too numerous to talk about here but as you read this novel--each person has a face and personality in your mind. They are each etched with exacting details till you "KNOW" the person.

The main characters are what you love--a man who needs a feisty woman with a warm heart and sharp mind. This hero deserves no less. He has a mystery and his life-long goal sounds like a place I'd love to visit for a long time--and the snow outside makes it even better! I would love to be able to re-read this novel for the first time all over again! It's that good!
A very good story, unique too! Well written with good character development and description. I loved the characters, especially the hero. The heroine was a little too feisty and argumentitive sometimes, but it fit the story and her personality. Some surprises and plot twists, with a happy and satisfying ending for all the characters.
Well, the pirate wasn't all that dangerous (he was raised in England as well as America) and the girl was a bit on the self righteous side (a "reformer"), but the story had an unusual setting and I found it entertaining. And there's a nice twist at the end.

The story is set in the 19th century and tells of Sara Willis, the step sister of an an earl, who like her mother before her, is a reformer trying to improve the lot of women. We meet her when her Ladies Committee of fellow reformers is visiting the women in prison who are being shipped off to New South Wales for what are really petty crimes. Sara decides to experience first hand the conditions the female convicts will face by traveling with them. Her step brother tries to stop her but realizes she'll find a way to go whether he approves or not, so he allows her to go but sends along a guard without her knowing it. After several weeks at sea, the ship "Chastity" is overtaken by the "Satyr," a pirate ship captained by the infamous Pirate Lord Gideon Horn. Gideon and his men are tired of the pirate life and are now seeking to create their own utopia on an uncharted island and raise families and settle down. All they need is wives and a ship load of women prisoners seems just what they need. But Gideon didn't count on Sara who is determined to protect the women. She bargains for time and and to allow the women a choice of husbands and Gideon agrees. Of course, as Sara and Gideon continue to clash, they fall in love. But Sara knows her stepbrother will come for her.

Jeffries writes well, her dialog is snappy, and her love scenes well done. I loved the secondary characters and their own love stories, too. And, the best part is that this is the first in a trilogy where the books are connected. (The next one, The Forbidden Lord is the story of Sara's brother the earl; the third is The Dangerous Lord.)
I think I read and re-read this story a dozen times now. I like the fact that it's a pirate love story, first. I know there are a lot of them out there, but this one felt unique and interesting to me.

A well known pirate lord and his crew wants to settle down on their remote island. They happen across a ship of women convicts heading to New South Wales. Since the pirates are looking for wives to settle down with, they take the women, along with an earl's stepsister, who is reporting the convicts' circumstances while aboard the ship. The pirate lord says that the women have a week to choose husbands or they will be chosen for them. The earl's stepsister manages to get the women a month to choose, but she also has to marry one of them. It doesn't help much when the pirate lord gives her sweet and passionate kisses that she enjoys.

I really hope this summary is a good sum of it. I really enjoyed reading this story. It's romantic, steamy, and sweet.

3 1/2 stars, This is not my typical read, in fact it takes a lot for me to read about a book with a main character in love with their deceased spouse. But that wasn't all that wasn't typical about this book(for me). This book is a very sweet romance but it's also about letting go and about the pain the death of a spouse can cause. And while this wasn't a typical read for me I really liked it. I felt for Reese and all they she had gone though and still struggled with. I was sad for Derek because we get to know him in this book even though he has already passed. And I Loved Logan all moody and broody and and possessive in his own way, but so loving and patient with Reese, in fact I don't think most could have been as patient and understanding.

Married young to her high school sweet heart Reese now finds herself a widow at too young of an age, who can't move past the death of her husband that she blames on herself. Knowing she has to make a change Reese inquires about a tour at The Donnelley’s Wild Land Tour’s. Getting to know one of the owners Gracie, Reese can't wait to get away for a month with Gracie to find peace and finally let go. selling their home and packing up Reese sets out for The Donnelley’s. When she arrives she is shocked to find Gracie with a broken leg and that the angry, short tempered man who greeted her will be her guide.

Logan is not what Reese planned for or wanted but with no tother options Reese and Logan Gracie's son set out for Reese's trip. Finding themselves bickering more than not Reese can't point what it is about Logan, but the more time they spend together the more Reese begins to care for Logan and that is something else doesn't know how to handle. Getting to know Logan better and better Reese knows logan is hiding a pain from his past and soon they find a friendship Reese couldn't have imagined but more Reese begins to feel more. When Logan shares his feeling for Reese neither can deny or hide how they feel for one another. Soon Reese is falling in love, but falling in love isn't easy after burying a husband. Logan wants it all with Reese and isn't shy in asking, but as they move forward Logan's secrets are revealed and Reese isn't sure she is strong enough to survive this.

As I said at the beginning this was not my typical book but I really enjoyed it, this book was about Reese's journey and her learning to move on. I will say that had this book been about Logan getting over the death of his wife I probably would have never touched it. Yes I know this is double standard and I'm ok with that. Reese was a really nice heroine, who had a lot to deal with including the expectation of others on how she should deal with her grief. Logan was perfect for Reese while Logan was possessive he knew he had to be patient, until he no longer could. He was strong and kind and very loving of Reese.

Having said that I do wish that it hadn't taken so long (book length wise) for Reese to move on. I can't imagine being married to someone and loving them and having your whole life ahead of you only to have that taken away. But book wise I would have liked for their to have been more time with Reese and Logan after she had come to grips with Derek's death so we could have gotten more of just them. Also Reese spends a great deal of time talking to Derek which I get but some more time with her and Logan would have been nice to show more of them falling in love and their growth as a couple. I think that right their showed how great Logan was, most couldn't have been as patient and as understanding as him which was just another way of showing how perfect her was for Reese, and I also believe he was a huge part in her healing and acceptance. But after that I think that was the point of the book and what made it so different. I'm really excited to see how this series progresses and to see what happens next(each book will be about the four Donnelley brothers). This book is also why it is nice to step away from the usual because ever once in a while you find a hidden gem in the ruff.

I must first start off this review by stating this is the first novel I have read from the author and I'm glad I did. Counting Stars was recommended by a friend and I didn't hesitate in reading once the opportunity presented itself. It would be remiss if I didn't say I read glowing reviews of this book and it was the last book added to my TBR but was bumped up to the first slot. I'm so glad I read this story!

Reese is a young woman who endured a trial uncommon for her age. It's a trial that ultimately changed her life. It just proves that our plans may not necessarily coincide with our Maker's. One minute you're here, the next you may not. She went from being happily in love with hopes of a bright future to having her happiness ripped from her in a painful way. After a year coping with tragedy, she decides to pursue an adventure, to do something completely out of the ordinary- transition from city girl to taking a monthly journey deep into the Canadian mountains. Far away from civilization, hot baths and home-cooked meals, Reese decides to become a survivalist- in every sense of the word.

A twist of fate places her in the hands of Logan Donnelly, one of the guides of this mountainous retreat. He is rude, conceited and absolutely gorgeous. But not all things are as they seem. Being a cowboy, born and bred in the mountains by his awesome yet traditional parents, Logan despises city folk, Reese not being an exception. The volatility these two characters experienced filled me with angst and for an author to accomplish that, well done. I was annoyed, irritated yet absolutely turned on. But like Reese, he too has a past- he has every reason be wary of city folk.

Logan is determined to teach Reese how to survive including fishing if she wants to eat. At first, Reese was completely turned off by Logan's arrogance and attitude, not to mention his constant judgement over status as a city girl, but she quickly adapts and fires back with such wit and bravado it made me cheer for her. With time, opposites attract and two people who have a history of heartbreak, like the stars in constellations, unite. Their love blossomed with each turn of the page and I really couldn't put this book down. I wanted more.

The way the author described a kiss gave me goosebumps. To me, kisses are the prelude to something more for they are not insignificant and definitely not inconsequential. A kiss... It all started with a kiss.

Counting Stars is the story of a woman who lost, and found in the most remarkable of places the healing her soul needed and the love her heart deserved. Five Amazing Stars. Thank you for this lovely story Ms. Carbonneau. I eagerly await the sequel. I can't wait to see where this series goes.

His Very Own Girl is the first WWII book I've read. Now that I think about it, I don't think I ever read a WWI plotted book either. I'm usually a Victorian or Edwardian era romance reader. I'd never really thought about that before now.

Anyway, it was really fun to see this different world that was so craftily created. Probably one of my favorite parts about the entire book was how detailed it was. I could so easily visualize the scenes and the characters. The flight scenes were fantastic and easy to understand for someone that knows nothing about the technical side of flying. Carrie Lofty did an amazing job with that. It kept my engaged and interested.

The chemistry between Lulu and Joe was easily felt as well. It made me happy that I could feel their desire and intrigue for one another. Lulu's thoughts on keeping men at a distance were easy for me to identify with, even without having been in her particular situation. She was an incredibly strong character, doing history changing things.

Joe, oh Joe. Such a good guy. Gentlemanly, honorable and protective with a touch of uncertainty. He had a rough past that he sometimes seemed to be unable to overcome. I wanted to hug him when he would get into a down in the dumps mood. He was so afraid that his past would turn people away once they learned of it. I did want to shake him at times but even his faults were endearing.

I really loved the differences in Lulu and Joe's personalities but in the things that were important, they seemed to mesh well. There story is really lovely. It's perfect for anyone looking for something a bit different, with strong female characters and dashing men.

The central conflict of this romance was not class, kidnapping, arranged marriage. No one is surprise!pregnant.

This is a book about two people working their way through World War II. Joe is a reluctant paratrooper medic, and Lulu is delighted to be ferrying planes around where they need to go.

They have an acknowledged mutual attraction, but Lulu is wary. She has been badly burned by the psychological damage the war has caused, and so she has a one-night-only policy. Joe has a dark secret that makes him skittish about anyone wanting to be with him. Both of them are adults, but alone in the world.

The thing that they actually have conflict about is their vision of the future. Lulu loves flying, and fears what her world will contract down to at the end of the war. Joe is very much a man of his era, and has trouble conceptualizing manliness without being very protective of women. He hates that the war has "forced" women to work, hates that they are in danger, hates that Lulu tells him over and over again that her work is more important to her than a potential relationship with him. She is having fun, but on her terms, her own methods of staying safe.

Through the whole book, even when they are unwrapping prophylactic kits and making whoopie, the fun shuts down when they touch on what they might be to each other after the war. Her job is a dealbreaker for both of them.

The history is super satisfying, and each of the characters was distinctive and crisp. I love Joe's mental self-castigation
He wanted to touch her, kiss her, lay her down across the bar... Jesus, his imagination had no manners.
In contrast, Lulu She let out an exhale that bordered on a hoarse scream, then pulled a face at the controls. "Very well, if you insist. Plan B. And by Plan B, I mean a pancake landing."

The romance is taut, the sex is no more giggle-inducing than normal, and although I want to look up underclothing of the time, the details and touches of what was rationed and what was available and all that seemed neatly and smoothly inserted.

It's a weird parallel universe. Dark haired ATA pilot, check. Blonde femme best friend, check. Dancing, cold, flying over France. And yet this is a romance. The other main character is a paratrooper medic. He has big muscles. There is sex. It's not as SMART or miserable, or anything like as intense. But it is quite satisfying. And I bet it could have an identical bibilography. But oh, what different books.

Read if You would like historical romance with some tension that is character driven, not improbable deus ex machina. You would like some nicely textured WWII history. You would like to learn more about battlefield medicine.

Skip if You are looking for this to be Code Name Verity all over again. You do not want to read graphic sex, graphic people getting blown up, or awkward conversations in the middle of fictional nookie time.

Also read Courtney Milan's books, for historicals with spitfire women and psychological trauma.Unraveled
I "ADORED" this story. It was beautifully crafted and flawlessly written. As a WWII story, part of the conflict came from the war itself, but Carrie Lofty took it beyond that and I was quickly drawn into the complex and compelling lives of Lulu and Joe.

Lulu is a British pilot, Joe, a US medic - drama and angst right there. By the end of chapter one these two felt like dear friends. I laughed with them, cried with them and wondered right up until the end if a HEA could ever be possible under the excruciating conditions of the war in which they found themselves. I have to say, it was one of the most believable romances I've ever read. And what a gorgeously sensual romance it was! 5 stars all the way and I will certainly read more from this author in the future.
I really enjoyed this book.

I have recently written a short story that takes place during WWII so I greatly appreciated the work that goes into researching this time period to make it authentic.

Lofty's hero, Joe Weber, is written very true to his time and I utterly appreciated it. Nothing tends to get my goat worse than someone in an historical fiction who doesn't sound time-appropriate. Well done, Author! Joe is strong - his physical presence is mentioned often - and charming but also controlled and dangerous. The reader will find out why...in stages.

Our Heroine, Lulu Davies, is a determined woman doing a hard job in war. I appreciated her fierce dedication to her work and the reasons behind it.

The story itself is well written, lets us into the hearts and minds of both Hero and Heroine, and brings us into the dark times of war in the European Theatre as well as the fear of those who were separated from those they love. We are also invited into a love story between two strong-minded people with different agendas. It wasn't an easy ride for either of them, but it worked and felt real by the story's end.

I'm rating this at 4.5 stars, which rounded up to 5.

This is a great book for any diehard baseball fan. As other reviewers have noted, the type of ballplayer covered in this book varies from Hall of Famer to long running back up. Most big baseball fans will have heard of them all. What I enjoyed most about this was that it is a snapshot in time of what these guys are up to. I wish there were more books like this. The chapters are short - between four and eight pages per subject - making this a perfect quick read when you don't have time to get fully engrossed.
I'm surprised this book and its author aren't better known. This is a SUPERB collection of interviews with baseball players of the past -- some of them famous (e.g. Banks, Maris, Spahn, Stottlemyre, McCovey, Bunning, Killebrew, Cepeda, Dick Allen), others not (John Blanchard, Walt Dropo, Pumpsie Green, and yes Vince DiMaggio, plus many more). Mr. Kiersh is an extraordinary interviewer and observer, and the writing is full of subtle and nuanced observations of each player. Each chapter is an amazing little slice of life and gives us a rare kind of vivid acquaintance with the former players. The author does a particularly great job of eliciting the players' personal reactions to their problems and tragedies, such as Karl Spooner's meteoric rise and immediate descent.

A book like this would be worthwhile even if it were mediocre, with its interviews and little biographies of so many players (a total of more than 50). But the quality of the interviewing and writing put it truly over the top. People with any interest at all in articles on baseball figures of yesteryear will treasure this book.
Author Edward Kiersh offers vignettes of over 50 former big leaguers in this remarkable look at both the game and life after baseball. Some of these ex-players were recent baseball retirees; others had left the game decades earlier. The assembled players range from top stars (Warren Spahn, Harmon Killebrew, Willie McCovey) to established players (Ernie Broglio, Leon Wagner), to marginal performers like Hector Lopez and Pumpsie Green. The author succeeds in getting the players to really open up with details of both their baseball careers and current lives. Nearly all left the game before the big salaries arrived, and thus needed to earn a living in their life-after-baseball. Some made a smooth transition, but others faced challenges ranging from unemployment, to alcoholism, to financial troubles. Bernie Carbo opened a hair salon, John Blanchard overcame drinking problems to work in sales, and Dean Chance was happy to have a job with a traveling carnival. As for the oldest DiMaggio brother, he was happily retired and studying his bible - sadly, he passed away at 74 in 1986, not long after this book arrived.

This is an entertaining, sad, and heartwarming look at over 50 baseball personalities. It makes for a great read, and we could use a newer edition today.
Good to see what happened to the guys after there playing days had ended.

The characters are both Noble and frustrating. I wanted to yell at them and ask why are you are you doing that while at the same time being amazed at what they're doing.

As the plague grows in intensity, so does the story. I never lost interest and wasn't sure what was going to happen next. I really liked the ending.

The story reminds me somewhat of another author's book I collect
Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged - but not as personally detailed. But this is still a very good story - as are all of Yarbro's books.
Good read that showed the "good guys and the bad guys" as the story progressed. Politics and medicine criss-crossed turing a threatening time that could be close to reality.

There are parts I liked and parts I didn’t liked at all. I like the world the author created and how the society and politics play out. I like the characters and that they evolve/grow. The storytelling had me engaged and fighting with them all. But I don’t like how Silver is turning out. She was a strong, independent woman fighting for herself. She’s becoming a whiny brat that is incapable of taking care of herself. I also got tired of her supposedly needing to be protected by super powerful magical beings but yet constantly being kidnapped and bested.

The arc has also definitely moved to romance novel and away from urban fantasy. The romantic scenes are very well done and had me awed at feeling their feelings and “watching” the slow and steady seduction. It definitely goes X-rated.

So, this installment is okay, not awful but not great.

There is a big however, however: There are five books in this series. I enjoyed the first three. The fourth book, Gravity, got too heavy for me (pun intended as I’m sure the author did as well). It was so heavy, though, that I stopped reading it. I decided I didn’t want to suffer through the frustration/annoyance/aggravation/stupidity/awfulness even if it might end well. I look to books to escape the depressing world, not be tortured by others’ misery. The main character’s stupidity becomes overly annoying in this installment and unbearable in Book 4. I just saw no sense in continuing. Love Books 1 and 2, like Book 3, and suffer through Book 4 to get to Book 5. Book 5 reviews say that it’s worth it. I decided not to.

I am doing my best to read the third book in the series, but I am struggling not to vomit each time the main character starts contemplating about her men. Another annoying issue is the writter's constant fascination with hostage&slavery drama. Not once I caught myself identifying with evil characters from the series to finally end one of the good girls or guys who repeatedly get captured/staked/enslaved etc. A fantasy novel is only good when it is believable. IMO, the Mageri Series is not. In the second book of the series, Simon, who is supposed to be some kind of a strategist, agrees with Silver's not so bright idea to confront (mighty and well connected) Nero without any previous planning, surveillance and tracking. As a result, they almost get killed and barely get away, which doesn't prevent Silver to go to a romantic date (approved by her not so bright guardian), on which occurrence she (of course) gets caught by Nero's minions. Since the knowledge of Nero's visit to the club Hell was not used for tracking, nobody knows where Silver was taken. IQ of both the "strategist" and the "g(h)uardian" must be around 70, which could also be said for Silver herself and her boyfriend, who went bowling in the middle of the life and death struggle (instead of getting laid somewhere safe, which you might expect from normal people who are 29+). Achtung! I am not saying my IQ is any better, since I am reading this.
I was having problems liking this heroine in the 1st 2 books because she was very judgmental & often judged good people very harshly w/out getting to know them. I did not like her disobedience to her Guardian ALL THE TIME. He was the closet thing to father she was going to get & although we as children like to be rebels, she never stops! I don't know how he had the chance to teach her anything. SHE NEVER LISTENS EVEN WHEN ITS LIFE OR DEATH! Well it seems as if she finally started growing up. About midway through this book she finally starts to obey her gardian more (but definately still being a pain in the a**) & realizing she's been not giving others a chance before judging. One thing that really bugs me is that every male in this book is fighting over Silver & threatening each over, over Silver. She must be sum kind of rare Demigod. Lol. I would like them to find the other Crossbreeds (which I'm sure Raven Black from the Crossbreed series will be one. Btw Crossbreed series is one of the best fantasy series I have ever read. Can't wait 4 book 4). I liked that Christian from Crossbreed was in this book. The Mageri series must have been his character's introduction b4 the Crossbreed series. His character is absolutely delightful w/all the smart remarks & innuendos. Keeps me laughing in this book as well as in the Crossbreed series. Gotta love that Simon as well. Just found out that he has a book so I'm definately getting that as soon as I finish this series. I'm glad that Silver is finally growing up!

I am an Anne Perry fan. I have read almost all of the Monk series and now have been reading the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series. Ms Perry is a gifted and brilliant writer. Her books are some of my all-time favorites. Bethlehem Road surprised me when the religious part came up. The theology was very familiar. Several of my ancestors were converted in England and Ireland during a similar time period as that which was portrayed in the book. My great grandmother, a young lady 18 years old, was converted by my great grandfather (my father's grandfather). She came back with him to America where they were married. I read some of the reviews and didn't find any mention of the religion that was described in the book. I realize it was just a small section used to advance the plot, but thought maybe someone noticed the coincidence too.

Emily is off on honeymoon and so only appears in letters. Members of Parliament keep ending up dead as they walk home. They investigate personal, business, and political motives finding none. Vespasias friend's niece gets caught up in the net. Her boarder was thwarted by one of the dead MPs in barbaric custody womens rights law. Charlotte starts investigating. In the end the killer comes out of nowhere and real evil lies elsewhere.
Anyone who doesn’t realize how short a time women have had even the most obvious freedoms should read this book and meditate on what was ..so short a time ago.
The statue of Boadicea driving her war chariot stands in front of the British Parliament building. Members of Parliament (MPs), walking past the statue every day, contended that women did not have the ability to understand issues and vote intelligently. The year is 1888 and women's rights are a contentious issue. When MPs have their throats cut on the way home from evening sessions, suspicion points in many directions. Was it a radical women's rights advocate, a demented anarchist, or perhaps someone benefiting financially?
Thomas Pitt and his wife, Charlotte, become involved in the investigation. The entire issue of women's rights unfolds including various repressive laws. There are issues of inheritance, child custody, and a wife's obligations to her husband (religious fundamentalists in the U.S. have been revisiting this issue). This is a real whodunit with a surprising conclusion. The novel provides a good picture of the English social structure of that time period.
Anne Perry is in my opinion unparalled as current writer. I find her books to be well paced with a tight plot. I am always guessing until the end or near the end. The fact that her books are set in victorian times are only a bonus. If you are like me you will enjoy this book and the series as well.
If you are reading this series in order this book is a bit disappointing--in fact I wonder if Anne Perry wrote them in a different order and then tried to fit them together. The previous book (Silence in Hanover Close) features Thomas being arrested for murder, Charlotte being shunned by her neighbors and Emily going undercover as a lady's maid in order to help solve the crime--but in this book there is no mention of how their lives may have changed as a result! It's seemingly back to business as usual. Otherwise this is a good read and an enjoyable look into Victorian England, although Charlotte's role here is much less satisfying as in some of the earlier books in the series.
I've been reading the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series from the beginning and I thought the books are generally well written and provide enough entertainment for me to want to keep reading them.

Before I continue though, this review can be considered a spoiler alert, so beware Bethlehem Road was also well written and the story was intriguing up until the very end. When you read a murder mystery, the point is to try to guess the "who done it" aspect and figure out the mystery along with the characters. That pursuit was impossible here because after reading 200 pages or so (not sure how many pages because I read it on my ) and becoming familiar with a cast of characters who could have been the murderer, all of a sudden, in the last remaining 30 pages of the book, an entirely new character is introduced along with a completely new plot line and the murder is explained that way! Why the heck did I just spend 200 pages reading about all these other characters then? What was the purpose of the entire book?

The introduction of a brand new character at the very end of the book just ruined the entire book for me. If you are reading this series, I would definitely skip this book. It may even ruin the whole series for you!
It never occurred to me that someone else was in the scope of this mystery. I couldn't imagine who the killer was. I thought and I thought but I couldn't figure it out. Duh...No wonder Anne Perry is one of the queens of mystery! I love Charlotte and her stickiness. I love t hat show v especially Thomas even tho he's not of the same social level as Charlotte. And who wouldn't love Great-Aunt Vespacia?

I so enjoy An e Perry's books and bow detailed she writes...about the furniture and draperies and the plants, for goodness sake! Please keep writing!

This is an excellent science-fiction story. It will keep you on the edge of your seat as you read and probably looking over your shoulder too! The author wastes no time in developing the story, and keeps the reader guessing as the plot unfolds in convoluted but fascinating twists and turns.
The writing is great and the plot is even better. We started with the character of Lanie, living in Malibu. I liked her immediately, especially when she took the initiative in taking back control of her life, or so she thought. Then I'm left with my jaw dropping at the cliff-hanger chapter ending. Then James, and Suki enter the story, along with other characters, and I couldn't put it down.
The story does jump around, but I like that in a story. Keeps it interesting. The characters are believable and I quickly became invested in their futures. The manuscript appears to be well edited. I didn't notice any errors. Scene development and descriptions are excellent.
I have no hesitation in recommending this book to any serious Science-Fiction reader. You won't be disappointed.

FANTASTIC book! The Awakening Fate in Motion was a great read that kept me interested, thinking, and guessing. Definitely worth a reread. i think this is a great novel for anyone age 14 and up.

Little about me, 154ish IQ, I read about 2 books a week. I read to learn and/or be entertained. Fortunately, this book provided both, as i believe the author deliberately challenges the reader.

I love the way the author delivers mystery, drama, and romance in a creative and refreshing mannor. (Have you noticed how bad movies are lately? What isn't being remade? Sigh)

The Awakening Fate in Motion by Suzanne Boisvert is a great book with plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested. There is a great cast of characters from Lanie to CIA Agent James Sinclair. With sinister forces at work at what seemingly is normal society, it is hard to know who to trust, and what is going on beneath the surface. Even the government may be involved. From the opening pages where Lanie asserts herself and fires her assistant to the final conclusion, this is a riveting tale, well written, with a fast paced plot, interesting characters, and enough action to keep the story moving along nicely. Supernatural powers, aliens and government conspiracies also figure prominently in this startling book. Overall, an interesting and riveting science fiction read; strongly recommend.
This is a pretty dark read, and the author doesn’t take any time waiting on showing us this. The story is full of twists and a bit of mystery as it unfolds. The writing is good, and the plot better. To be clear, this is not a horror story but science fiction, but it’s written in a way that really drives home how dark forces that facilitate an unearthly agenda.

The story starts off in Malibu, following Lanie, and her assistant. After Lanie we meet Rick, then Suki and their equally odd encounters. The story cuts back and forth a bit (which made it a tad difficult to really immerse myself in the character’s lives) and gets progressively engrossing as it moves forward. There is a good list of characters, each with their own, well-developed personalities. The first few chapters are grabbing the reader in (and it certainly does that) and introducing us to the main characters. This made the story read a bit fast at the start, and it made it feel like it slowed in the middle (but it certainly kept me intrigued, the author is a good writer)...however, in the end it all tied together nicely.

Boisvert has herself a great story here, and I can’t wait to see what else she can come up with!
This book gave me the creeps while I was reading it. It is the riveting story of a dark, ancient force out in outer space who is planning his return to Earth after being banished from it over thousands of years ago. He is in search of his love, a female who may have forgotten about him and her history as well as having her name changed over time. This diabolical force goes by the name of Sar and he has appointed an alien being called Manti to work with some powerful, political figures in Washington, DC to carry out his plan to return and rule over the world.

Enter a Pop star (Lanie); a CIA agent (James); and a Psychiatrist (Dr. Suki) who for all their lives have suspected something different and totally supernatural about themselves or the people they loved and are/were close to. Lanie is a world-renown singer who is successful but has been followed around by sinister people who know about her gift and her destiny; James is one whose career is to debunk all conspiracy theories that threaten to get out of hand, is alarmed to discover that his mother, who he has always dismissed as being crazy with her stories about the Knights Templar, is actually sane and telling the truth; and Dr. Suki whose deceased grandfather has always fascinated her with his wisdom and knowledge of the paranormal, is determined with all her might to protect her patient, Lanie the Pop star as well as the human race from what she knows as something dreadful coming soon.

I thought this book was really neat and that it really held my attention from the first page to the last. It is because stories of this kind have always amused me as relating to the book of Revelations of the Holy Bible even though this book is entirely a work of science fiction. I somehow seemed to find myself drawn to the way it brings up the Knights Templar which is a Catholic military order in historical Europe that according to Wikipedia (yeah I know what you’re thinking but still…) played a role in Catholic finance. (Anyway, you can go to Wikipedia and read all about it). Being a Catholic and one who has read so many conspiracy theories over the course of my life, I found this book to satisfy that interest of mine therefore making this book worth my while. I will not tell you more about this story in case it will spoil your interest in it but just to note that it contains aliens, magical discs, a sexy seductress whose actual appearance is grotesque (hahaha) and the notion that the US government is hiding something ultimately out of this world underneath the Pentagon.

I recommend this book to all those who loves a great sci-fi book that actually starts and ends with a lot of action and impact. It is a book that I deem great for someone who is traveling by train or by airplane. It is a book that will terrify you and make you thirsty for more. It contains a delectable conspiracy theory that turns the religious end-of-the-world prophecies you have heard already into a science fiction frenzy about the world having alien origins and such. All in all, I really recommend this book for all readers because it’s just pure entertainment and would make a great movie if Hollywood sets its mind on it. Have a great day!

Soooo, this was not good. But not good in a the-genre-has-grown-up sort of way. This book is from 2006 and just like bodice rippers are out of style in the romance genre, I think the sort of plotting in this book has gone out of style in the paranormal romance genre. We readers just expect so much more now than a thinly defined Other enemy of paranormal origin, a characterless alpha hero and a sweet little thing heroine. Maybe this would have been enough when there weren’t a lot of other PNR books around, but not anymore.

The enemies from across the ill-defined border are literally just called Others and the reader learn almost nothing about them except that they’re evil in some way that effects the environment. I wasn't sure that I would like this one when I bought it, cause there are alot of books trying to be a Dark-Hunter or Carpathian look-a-like. Also a first book in a series has to set the stage for the rest, and that is hard for an author to do. If it's just one book she is free to interpret things in a very broad manner, but a series has to follow a certain outline and can narrow an author's focus.

However, after getting through the first third, where alot of the explainations have to come, I found I like the premise of the books. I definitely will be on the outlook for more.

Devlin Bane is a Paladin, a secret warrior who protects Earth from the Others. He has been fighting for a long time and each warrior finally turns into what he fights (an Other). So they have a Handler who patches them up when they die in battle, or ends their lives if they turn Other. I Know, I know, sounds like you've heard it before. But I guess I never get enough of Macho Men.

Dr. Laurel Young is his Handler. She is Handler for alot of the Seattle Paladins. But she in not in love with alot of the Seattle Paladins, only one, Devlin Bane. It is forbidden for a handler to love a paladin.

Everything goes along as usual until Devlin is killed by a human. There is a conspiracy in the Ordinance or Research Division. The attacks on Devlin lead to revealing the secret desires of both of them. Both are in danger now and the other Paladins rally to protect their friends. Everything leads to a violent conclusion.

This has very graphic love scenes and leaves you with alot of questions,I hope we get some answers in her next novel. But I have to conclude there will be more novels. For the first novel in a series I think it is better than most of the others I have read. And I do think it is worth the price and the time.
All righty. Well, I just came across this series as a recommendation in someone's list of paranormal romances, so I'm late to the party and have some catching up to do. No worries, I read really fast when a book is good, and this one was. That is not to say it wasn't without issues and things I hope the author improves on as the series continues, but compared to a lot of series I have tried and failed to get into lately, this one was better than most.

I liked Devlin, but wasn't super interested in him to be honest. He was described as losing his humanity and in danger of turning Other, but he seemed to have very human emotions and acted quite in control. So I thought he would be more interesting and volitile than he was. We also get next to no background for him, which hurt as well. We at least get more information about Laurel's past, and as romance heroines go I liked her well enough. I wasn't totally into them as a couple, as so much of it just seemed to be about sex. But I guess the build up to that happened "off stage" since these two knew each other before the story began. I never felt any real sparks, though, other than when they were first contemplating being together. I found myself more interested in Blake Trahern and getting information about the other Paladins than truly caring for Devlin or Laurel.

The "who is the bad guy" plotline did keep me guessing between a few different people until close to the end when I figured it out. So that was well done. I'm not sure who the "greater" bad guy is yet, either, so I'm interested in continuing the series to find out what is going on and why. HOWEVER.... as I have seen other reviewers mention, the world building here is a bit weak. It's never really explained where Paladins come from, how they are identified, how they end up working there to defend the Barrier. It's sort of hinted at that they come from Others crossing with humans... maybe? I expect a first book in a series to explain at the very least the basics of the "race" or whatever of the heroes. That was not done. What makes a Paladin a Paladin, what can they do, etc? Even the Barrier concept was vague. I thought it was a natural phenominon, but at the end the Paladins can apparently bring it back up from a distance. Um, how? Another issue I spent a lot of the book wondering if the existance of Paladins was common knowledge or not. By the end, we know it is not. Well.... then how do the people at Research and Ordnance know about them? Who decides whom to tell about them so they can be hired to work with them? Again, I know this is only the first book, but the basic concepts of the world need to be explained a LOT better than this before the end. It made me wonder if the author even knew the answers, or was winging it and hoping to figure it out later. The story and world felt incomplete, and I had a hard time connecting and being immersed.

I'm intrigued enough, however, to move on to the next book, and overall I did enjoy the book. The writing is solid, although as is the usual in books of this genre there were some major eye-rolling moments (It's a pet peeve of mine when breasts have a flavor, for one thing...). But I have tried the first book in a number of series lately and been unable to finish the majority of them. This one, I read in under a day. I saw that Trahern's story is up next, so that was encouragement to move on! If the author can work on solidifying her world concepts, this series has a lot of promise.
Soooo, this was not good. But not good in a the-genre-has-grown-up sort of way. This book is from 2006 and just like bodice rippers are out of style in the romance genre, I think the sort of plotting in this book has gone out of style in the paranormal romance genre. We readers just expect so much more now than a thinly defined Other enemy of paranormal origin, a characterless alpha hero and a sweet little thing heroine. Maybe this would have been enough when there weren’t a lot of other PNR books around, but not anymore.

The enemies from across the ill-defined border are literally just called Others and the reader learn almost nothing about them except that they’re evil in some way that effects the environment. Overall Opinion: This was an enjoyable re-read. I found that I didn't remember ever single detail, so it was nice to read again. I liked experiencing their progression into love. I also liked how Ty melted from being a cold, closed off man into one that loved Lexie openly and was affectionate with her. Because of the revenge aspect this did have a lot of other stuff going on, but I appreciated how KA still took the time to develop the relationship and focus on the romance in between it all.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Lexie and Ty's story. They meet when Lexie picks up Ty from prison. She is stuck under the thumb of an unsavory man after her long-time boyfriend died, and she is made to do jobs for him like picking up Ty. Ty has been released after serving 5 years for a crime he didn't commit, and he has vengeance to get against the men that put him there. He didn't expect Lexie to be the one to pick him up. After propositioning Lexie, he gets her to agree to marrying him in exchange for an escape from the man that has control over her life. Soon they find that the lines between a fake marriage and a real relationship are blurred and they fall in love. There are some big obstacles they have to get through to find their happiness...but they do get a HEA in the end.

POV: This alternated between Lexie and Ty's POV (with a few sections in other side character's POV).

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well. As with most KA books, it is on the longer side - listed as 664 pages on Amazon.

Instalove: Yes, but not in the way that I found it unbelievable (and not expressed until close to the end that they were feeling love since the beginning).

H rating: 4 stars. Ty. I loved him until he messed up and pushed the h away. I did think he made up for his mistakes in the end, but I hated the way he reacted.

h rating: 4 stars. Lexie. She was a good combination of sweet, loyal, sassy, and loving. I only wished that she made Ty work a little harder for her forgiveness.

Sadness level: Moderate. I cried in this one. It never turned into ugly crying, and I never needed tissues though.

Heat level: Moderate. They ave some hot chemistry and scenes, but not so much it takes away from the story.

~~~ Me the very beginning of this book ~~~~

Um…our hero Ty has no clue how to use a verb or a noun. He grunts and barely puts two syllables together. How am I supposed to read a book with him in it.

Oh look he knows more than two words and I thought that would be better but OMG it is worse. He pretty much refers to stuff in terms of p*ssy and d*ck and I’m growing concerned that I am not going to like Ty if this keeps up.

Ty becomes interesting and the plot of the story heats up. See Alexa Berry was roped into picking him up from jail but she didn’t know the rest of what was promised to Ty Walker….and it is going to be a big surprise.

***“Alexa Anne Berry. Dallas resident. Buyer at Lowenstein’s department store. I need everything you can get on her.”
“Walker, I’m a bounty hunter, not a PI,” Jackson reminded him.
“You got resources. You got connections. I’m askin’ you to use them.”
Pause then, “Who is this woman?”
“I’m marryin’ her tomorrow. ****

Well tickle me pink and call me a peony I know right at this moment in the story I’m going to love it. Instant marriage of convenience to something more is one of my favorite tropes when done right.

Don’t worry Ty gets a vocabulary and while I think he is the most crass of all the KA alphas to date he has moments of utter tenderness too. It became clear after he learned who Alexa’s last and only boyfriend ended up dead and the life he led while alive that Ty was a diamond in the rough.

***“So, you know when the limit’s up on love?” he asked, and I felt my chest depress as the profound weight of his question hit me.
“No,” I whispered.
“Right. No. No one does. Not you. Not me. No one. You loved him, you believed in him. Far’s you were concerned, he didn’t take those hits, the day after, he coulda got his head outta his ass and done right by you. You held onto that belief. Nothin’ wrong with that except the fact that he never manned up, and that’s on him not on you.” ****

So yay we get a dirty talking hero and one of my favorite heroines because she doesn’t spend much time pitying anything in her life and for the most part she is bubbly in full of happiness and sunshine….I totally understand that girl. Beside that Lexie is a little bit goofy and I totally get that. I loved her outgoing, sassy talking, don’t take crap from no one attitude and how she lives her life large.

I loved their love story but I also enjoyed the side story of Ty finding out a way to get justice for the five years he spent in prison for a crime he didn’t commit and coming to terms with what it means to live free and how to let some stuff from his past go. He wasn’t always good at it and he totally screwed up a few times but overall Ty might be my new favorite alpha….well at least in the Colorado Mountain series that it.

This was my first time reading Lolita, but I understand that there are some people here who, having already read this classic before, have decided to look into an annotated version to see how those extra appendages might contribute to the overall experience of a second read through. With this in mind, I'll try to first review the novel itself for those who are unfamiliar, and perhaps undecided, and then I will add my own thoughts on the Introduction and annotations that have been provided by Alfred Appel, Jr.

On the surface, you might imagine it uncomfortable to read a story in which our narrator and protagonist is a middle aged man with an obsessive fetish for "nymphets," who forms a sexual relationship with a 12 year old girl, traveling around the country while cunningly passing himself off as her father. But readers might find it reassuring(or disappointing) to know that there's actually very little obscenity in this novel, that sex is never actually described in detail, that the closest it comes to erotica would be when Lo reclines and naively rests her legs on the narrator's lap for the first time, that this book is actually a highbrow comedy. Humbert Humbert(or H.H.), as he calls himself, is a handsome, wealthy, and intelligent man, who, seemingly bored and callous to the world, constantly injects his uniquely blithe and sardonic humor into the text. Every character he meets is mocked with a jolly contempt. Every scenario in this book is turned into a parody. Consciously aware of his own creepiness and mental fragility, "lucidly insane," H.H. even parodies himself.

Here you will find a writing style that will make you feel more sophisticated just for having understood it. There are literary allusions to please the English buffs, along with an expansive vocabulary including, but not limited to, some rare and exotic words which do not even appear in the standard Kindle dictionary. But most of the humor, I think, is really in the tone and the way characters are portrayed, and even if you don't quite understand every remark H.H. makes, none of this is really necessary to appreciate the story.

In Part Two, the focus starts to shift a bit to some of the more subtle features of their relationship: the places they visited, Dolly growing up, Dolly bringing friends over, Dolly playing tennis, etc. I found it impressive to see how the characters changed and developed throughout this part, and Humbert Humbert's reflections on their relationship were even somewhat profound sometimes. Some people who aren't interested in the aesthetics here might find this area to be a little slow, but I promise you'll be rewarded soon after. The second to last chapter is hilarious.

As for the annotations, they were ok. They provide some extra background information, they translate the French for you, but they were nothing special. Some reviewers have complained about the lack of in-text hyperlinks, but I honestly don't think these would have been beneficial. The numerical chapter headings already have hyperlinks, my kindle app lets me jump back and forth with just a couple finger taps, and in-text hyperlinks would have been distracting. However, A.A. does seem to give away some spoilers in his annotations, so for those who would prefer a full immersion experience and who would like to try to predict some mysteries on their own, I might suggest actually ignoring the annotations the first time they read Lolita, or at least the ones that don't translate French.

The introduction seemed to start off well until Appel started talking about literary involution. There is a lot of involution in Lolita, realism is deliberately thrown out the window sometimes, but I saw this as contributing to the comical effect and nothing more. Appel seems to interpret some kind of subjectivist philosophical meaning in it which I thought just went too far. His anecdote about the Puppet Show, and how his 5 and 3 year old children began laughing to steel themselves against the terror of questioning the reality of reality(whatever that means) was so stupid, I immediately skipped the rest of the Introduction and continued onto the Foreword. Nabokov's commentary on Lolita at the end, however, was pleasant.

To be clear - this review is specific to the edition of the annotated novel. I would give Lolita itself 5 stars and then some.

There's around 200 pages worth of footnotes and they have a link to the footnotes at the front of each chapter - but no link on the things that are being foot-noted and no indication at all that they were discussed.

There's no easy way to switch back and forth between the footnotes and the main text. To look something up you basically have to page backwards to the first page of the chapter, click on the link, then page forward through the notes to the item you're interested in, then admittedly there IS a link provided there to send you back to the main text.

So to make the links work without constant paging back and forth, it's almost like you have to read the full notes for the chapter BEFORE reading the chapter. It's really distracting and pulling me out of the narrative. I thought it was going to be individual footnotes so I could look things up as I came across them - not one giant note for the whole chapter. (Little individual footnotes was how the intro is formatted.)

You can jump from one footnote to another, from the footnote to multiple spots in the text, etc. But you can't jump directly from the text to the footnote!

I think this is one book that would work a lot better with paper rather than this really poorly formatted ebook edition.
Yes, the protagonist is a deranged pervert - that we all know from the pearl-clutching shock that remains associated with the book after so many years. But it is so much more than a lurid tale of debauchery. In fact, after reading, it feels quite the opposite. Nabokov's artful prose rivals the very greatest modern writers you will have ever read. His skill with imagery and coined terms is magical, while the vehicle of his unreliable narrator carries you deep into and around the edges of madness and obsession. Simply a fantastic read.
This is kind of like reviewing Canterbury Tales or The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The legend precedes the book and outruns any review. But here goes.
We've all seen the movie, right? It IS a great film. But to read this book is far more frightening, disturbing and it's way more decadent and creepy. In a way it's kind of a horror story because the male protagonist, who narrates the book, is WAY CRAZIER than the character portrayed so well by James Mason in the film. He is a monster hiding in plain sight behind a teacher's mask. This book is so ahead of it's time.
Interestingly, there are characters, namely Lolita and her sicko drama teacher, who are developed BETTER in the film than the book. Chalk that up to the director's vision. Well, to make a long story short, you HAVE TO read this modern classic.
I have wanted to read "Lolita" for years. The most useful advice I can give to someone else considering making this puchase, would be to consider buying "The Annotated Lolita." I bought a copy listed as "complete and unabridged" because i was afraid another copy would be edited. It is a controversial book after all. I didnt want to get an abridged version. There are many foreign passages in this book that went over my head. I was unable to find a website devoted to all the interpertations I needed for "Lolita." I was forced to chose between taking a break from reading to google search passages as I came across them, or to skim over them when I was too engrossed to put down the book.
Spare yourself from this hassle and just buy "The Annotated Lolita."

Some reviewers have complained about the lack of in-text hyperlinks, but I honestly don't think these would have been beneficial. The numerical chapter headings already have hyperlinks, my kindle app lets me jump back and forth with just a couple finger taps, and in-text hyperlinks would have been distracting. However, A.A. does seem to give away some spoilers in his annotations, so for those who would prefer a full immersion experience and who would like to try to predict some mysteries on their own, I might suggest actually ignoring the annotations the first time they read Lolita, or at least the ones that don't translate French.

The introduction seemed to start off well until Appel started talking about literary involution. There is a lot of involution in Lolita, realism is deliberately thrown out the window sometimes, but I saw this as contributing to the comical effect and nothing more. Appel seems to interpret some kind of subjectivist philosophical meaning in it which I thought just went too far. His anecdote about the Puppet Show, and how his 5 and 3 year old children began laughing to steel themselves against the terror of questioning the reality of reality(whatever that means) was so stupid, I immediately skipped the rest of the Introduction and continued onto the Foreword. Nabokov's commentary on Lolita at the end, however, was pleasant.

I really wanted to like this book. I bought all 3 books expecting this was going to be a great series. I finally made the time and dove in to Falling Into You. I must say I was sadly disappointed. The love story between Kyle and Nell was beautiful and what happened to Kyle is tragic. The issue is not that Nell ended up falling in love with Kyle's older brother. I've read another story where the h and H fall in love, but the H is terminal and dies. The h ends up with the older brother. It was well done and ended up in an HEA even though your heart went out to the brother and the h for their loss. I don't know what it was about this book, but I couldn't get into it. I never felt a connection between Colton and Nell. I get Nell fell apart after Kyle died, but what I don't get is she was supposedly so in love with him, they had been best friends before they could speak, and two days after Kyle's death at his funeral, Nell and Colton are having zingers with each other. A couple of years later they meet up in NY and they barely spend 1/2 an evening together when she's professing how much more she feels for Colton then Kyle (not in the sack). She also talked about Kyle during other precarious situations that you should just not bring up about your deceased boyfriend to his alive brother while in the midst of getting intimate. Other reviewers have said it, but there's also lots of cliches that made it too much.

Colton has a disability (not physical) and it's described as if it was back in the dark ages and noone realized that it was a real problem and could be treated. His type of disability had been around for a long time and can be diagnosed quickly. Don't mean to rant, however, I'm just really disappointed that the story started out so great and as soon as Colton was introduced I lost interest. I'll try to read the next two in the series since I own them so we'll see how that goes.

The first part of the book was amazing. I loved Nell and Kyle's innocent, sweet and endearing love and friendship. I knew from reading the synopsis that Kyle would not be a big part of the book. I could have handled her falling in love with Colt and him and her having this great love. My problem with the book was how the author kept comparing Kyle and Colt in all ways. I just could get past that. First off there is no comparison Nell and Kyle were 16 and only with each other had Kyle lived they would have gained more experience and had a stronger love. Colt is much older and obviously has more experience in the love dept. I also hated how she made it like what she has for Kyle was nothing after only knowing Colt for like what two weeks. Kyle was her best friend for 18 years and the author made it like that was nothing compared to her and Colt. I felt like you could have had Nell and Colt have this lasting love without taking away from what she had with her first love Kyle... All in all the story could have been great had the author not done the whole comparison thing.
I really loved this book. The emotion is raw and dragged me in but... **Spoiler Alert**

... the holes in the plot drew me to distraction! Nell and Kyle grew up together, learned to swim and ride bikes together, lived in each other's pockets from day one but Nell didn't know Colton at all when he apparently left home at 17? Nell would have been about 11?! Really?? Who proof read this? Whomever it was should never work in this industry again because this is one of several issues that ruined an otherwise very good story. Argh! I'm so disappointed that these things weren't corrected/amended.... sloppy writing. Sloppy editing. Made this feel like it was churned out for the masses.. maybe Jasinda should focus on her song writing if that is more important to her than her books?

Falling Into You is a very emotional read. I spent the first part of the book learning about Kyle and Nell. I saw them when their friendship turned into something more and in a split second Kyle was gone. It was heartbreaking and hard for Nell to get through. Colton tried to help in the aftermath, supporting Nell and helped her to unwind, before he left to head back to New York. Two years later they cross paths again and Colton can still see the sadness in Nell. She hadn’t dealt with her loss properly and he wants to help her. They become close and they both face demons from their pasts together.

Nell was a sweet girl, but I could see that she was struggling in life. She found ways to cope, but not all of them were healthy for her. When Colton came into her life he helped her face her issues instead of burying them.

Colton had regrets from his past too. It wasn’t an easy path for him to get to where he was. His history slowly unravelled and I could see that there was more to him than the rebellious teenager that he was. He grew up after a rough start on his own and found his way.

I loved seeing Nell and Colton together. They both used music as an outlet and for Colton it helped him express his feelings. They both grew together and faced some hard times that shattered my heart, but made them stronger together.

I enjoyed every moment of reading Falling Into You. Some hard issues were faced and the characters learned new ways to deal with it together. Listening to the book was splendid too. Both Gabriel Vaughan and Piper Goodeve gave great voice to both Colton and Nell, and I think they made me more emotionally attached to the story. Jasinda Wilder wove the story perfectly… allowing me to connect to the characters and hoping desperately that they would find happiness together. I will definitely read more in this series, because this book is going to stay with me for a long time!

This is supposed to be one of those 'don't miss' classics. Personally I found it all a bit silly. I have no problem with it's message of protecting the wilderness from the predations of developers, but the characters were caricatures and the plot seemed concocted by the imagination of an idealistic teenager. Perhaps it seemed radical in its day but in our 'age of terror' it just doesn't ring true.
I decided to read Monkey Wrench Gang because one book of Edward Abbey's or another was always sitting at my late father's bedside table. My Dad tended to read existential, philosophical novels and was a big fan of Hemingway and Camus. Clearly I had the wrong idea of what Abbey was about. The Monkey Wrench Gang does occasionally wax philosophically, but only in the midst of one character whining or thinking about the bourgeois influence of sanitized American adulthood on the natural environment. Most of Abbey's energy in Monkey Wrench Gang is spent having a good time - following a troupe of 4 troublemakers each shaking off their own shackles of middle-aged boredom to help fight for environmental freedom. But what I found I liked most about Abbey was that, if that was his plot, it's devoid of any sentimentality, any politeness, and even just the occasional whiff of sympathy, even for the characters we care about. At its center, George Hayduke, the beer-guzzling sorta-traumatised vet who never met a can of cheap beer he didn't like, is so fun to watch not because of his drive, but because his drive to clean up the environment seems to come from nothing more than his hatred of anything besides open land, and even then, he'd never be able to put that into words. For a 400+ page book, Abbey's narrative never slags - there's always a race, a crime, or a good yelling match keeping the book moving. And then there's that philosophical sense, which shows up in asides throughout the book, making Abbey's writing a lot like a Vonnegut or Tom Robbins - prone to smart observations that make you like the writer even more than you thought you already did. Take this observation, on women going to bed before men while camping "The ladies first. Not because they were the weaker sex - they were not - but simply because they had more sense. Men on an outing feel obliged to stay up drinking to the vile and bilious end, jabbering, mumbling, and maundering through the blear, to end up finally on hands and knees, puking on innocent sand and befouling God's sweet earth. The manly tradition." Observations like that show how punchy Abbey can be in making a point, even is his point is that civilized westerners, to the environment and beyond, have been pretty annoying.
The Monkey Wrench Gang holds up well; is still entertaining and thought provoking. All of the characters are flawed, but that may be the point. Those of us who fit well into society are seldom eager to risk our comfortable lives in the service of a greater good. Those of us who are marginalized, however, have less to lose and may be more likely to make political statements and take political actions.

The adventures of George Hayduke, Doc Savis, Bonnie Abzug and Seldom Seen Smith as they attempt to fight back against development and the destruction of the West by destroying bulldozers, dams and the egos of their pursuers are cartoonishly entertaining. Today, the idea of an environmentalist throwing a beer can out of a car window seems more than a little odd. In 1975, however, Abby seemed to be combining the mythic image of the Marlborough man with some new age sensitivity to the environment to create characters who both entertain and enlighten and have held up well for 40 years.

If you are looking for a light read to entertain you on a flight or at the beach, and have missed it in the past, The Monkey Wrench Gang is a great choice. It is also worth reading to get some historical knowledge and understand where Earth First got some of their ideas. So enjoy the humor, the descriptions of the West and your trip back in time with one of the books that inspired the environmental movement.
I bought this several years ago right around the time the stuff at the Bundy ranch was boiling over. It seemed a good time to have a look at some sort of western libertarian anarchism. What binds Abbey's characters and the Bundy gang was a sense of ownership of the collective but a weird sense. The Bundy people defended grazing on collective land - private benefit of public land without compensation of the public. The gang in the book have a weird sense of protecting the land through destruction, but they aren't steward of the land. One thing that struck me was how willfully they all littered. And on top of all of that, neither the Monkey Wrench Gang or the Bundy Gang were the first ones on the land they claimed to protect through their ownership. The Amerindians are pretty absent from both narratives. As a book, Abby is a good writer, even though I had trouble differentiating between Hayduke and Seldom Seen Smith (not enough difference in the characters, if you ask me). It was good enough that though I kept putting it aside, I kept picking it back up.
I've read this book a few times now, Edward Abbey truly is an amazing author. This book takes you on a journey through environmental stewards or eco terrorists as some might say. Ok after reading Axel, I was in love with Greg Cage. I couldn’t wait to start his book. I don’t know what I would have done if I had to wait like most other readers. Luckily for me, my wait was short, like 30 seconds because I have the series box set!!!!

Cage is so strong, loyal, and a protector through and through. But we quickly learn that he is also a huge douchebag sometimes. I mean I love the guy but the way he treated Mandy in the beginning was just WRONG!!!! And the whole scene at Carnal made me lose some respect for him but he was able to make me Team Cage again. Thank God!!! And trust me, I am no fan of Mandy’s.

Melissa is strong, independent, a fighter, and willing to sacrifice for her family. I loved her from the beginning. Greg & Melissa share a similar past and can relate to each other on a level that could only strengthen their relationship. Once Greg takes out the garbage, they begin to build a loving relationship.

Cohen is Melissa’s 3 year old nephew who you can’t help but love. In a lot of ways he is the star of this book. The interactions with him, the men of CORPS SECURITY, and Sway can only be described as amazing writing. Between him fighting ninjas while wearing his cape, talking about weiner-rings, and “time-outs”, you will not stop laughing or smiling. The relationship between Greg & Cohen will make your heart melt. There are also some ugly cry moments.

Before this family can have their happily ever after, there will be some bumps, bruises, losses, secrets revealed, and heartbreak. But in the end, there will be so much love that you will leave this book not ready to say goodbye.

I very much enjoyed this story of Greg Cage and Melissa. Greg was a big part of the previous book in this series (Axel), as a pseudo big brother to Izzy and a good friend to Axel. In Cage, he meets Melissa when he takes Izzy's son to the doctor's. Melissa is struggling with dealing with her sister's death and getting custody of her nephew, Cohen. These two hit it off from the start! Melissa is just what Greg needs; she's a little sassy, but so loving and compassionate. Greg continues with his alpha-ness. I love the addition of Cohen, and just how much Greg loves him! That took the book to the next level.

I definitely recommend Cage!
I thought that after reading Axel that I was in love....but I was seriously mistaken. Greg Cage has possibly surpassed all other book boyfriends to become my absolute favorite! Oh lord that man is so wonderfully sweet, sexy, & take charge. I love that he doesn't just protect Meli but all of his girls. He is the guy who is always looking out for them and can tell when something is wrong. I think what I love the most is that he could just tell from the moment he saw her that Meli was for him. I love (and hate because seriously sad stuff) that they have an added connection between them because of what happened to their sisters.
Meli learned so much about love and living when she was with Greg. I think she could've been stubborn about their relationship but Greg didn't give her the chance, & that helped her admit and accept her feelings.
The book drew me in from the start. I was laughing so loudly at some parts that my family was questioning what was so funny. There were moments where your heart just broke for them too. It was just overall one of the best books I've read. I didn't even make it to the halfway point before I had to go online and order the paperback.
WET PANTIE ALERT - TOTAL ADULT ALERT! NO STUPID MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND ACTING LIKE CHILDREN IN THIS BOOK! There were siren's going off in my bedroom last night! Whew! This book was smokin hot! I was anxiously awaiting Cage and was not disappointed at all.
I loved catching up with all the characters. I really wish the next book would be for Maddox and Emmy next, but it looks like Bec and Dee are up next.
Cage starts off with a bang...literally. However, this bang eventually bites Cage in the a** not soon after.
I love how these guys just see the girls and WAMMO! Gotta have 'em. It's totally hot to me.
Obviously, if you've read the 1st book (and if you haven't, must read that first for this one to make sense), you know Cage is totally Alpha (well really, they all are). Our heroine Melissa doesn't disappoint either.
I laughed out load, I cried and I had to get a built in fan for my underwear to keep me cool and dry.
This book was great, please read this series if you haven't. If you love a committed alpha hero, a sweet, not to be walked over heroine, and a set of characters that were all made for eachother, this is the series for you.

The Caine Mutiny A Novel Herman Wouk Books Reviews

This has been my favourite read of 2017. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the book considering that when I think of naval mutiny I think of the 1990’s movie Crimson Tide, with high drama and intense acting. The Caine Mutiny is at the opposite end of the intensity scale in almost every respect.

This is a long, slow coming of age story in a time of war. We are so used to being entertained by fast paced, action packed movies and books that I sometimes wonder if we have lost an appreciation for things that are a truer reflection of the movement of time. The pace of the story gave the reader a true appreciation of the character development witnessed over the course of the book and of the nature of war. After the fact, it is easy to think of war was a series of battles that were won or lost, but this glosses over the weeks and months of hurry up and wait that fill much of a military man’s life. Wouk captures the interminable endless feeling of war perfectly and likewise startles us with the infrequent, violent nature of battles and storms against this otherwise benign backdrop.

This is all great stuff of course, but what made it a favourite read? Wouk writes charmingly, with familiarity and wit. He always seems to have the perfect word, the perfect little detail to convey a scene to the reader. The story is, of course, the real draw. And more than anything it is the simplicity of the story. It’s the story of Willie Keith growing up in a time of war. The story has a traditional arc that pulls the reader along and all of the supporting characters are fascinating in their own right and support this arc. The angst and trouble that Willie experiences are ordinary and relatable. There is a complete absence of social issues, events and characters to make the story “relevant.” The backdrop of war gives the story context and allows Wouk to use it as prism to break out character, leadership and friendship.

This was a great story with enduring character lessons for us.
The Caine Mutiny is one of the greatest books I have ever read - and I've read many. I have read this book so often I couldn't put a number to this reality. It is insightful to an extraordinary degree as to the lives and behaviour of people with a special focus on the WW2 Navy. These insights can only have emerged from a man (Herman Wouk) who has lived them. Perhaps he is one of the characters or perhaps all of them given the infinite complexity of what it is to be human especially under the stress of war time pressures. Tom Keefer's likening ( a key character) of his moment of cowardice to that of "Lord Jim" - he refers to himself as "Lord Tom" with his genius like capacity for irony - and its defining impact on his life is overwhelmingly poignant ("Don't forget Willy - I jumped") and might function as a warning to us all.
I could go on but I have learned much about life from this book. It is so important that I have numerous hard copies and a copy so I can pretty much have it with me wherever I go.
The Caine Mutiny was Herman Wouk’s first post World War II novel. Published in 1951, the novel qualified as contemporary fiction. Sixty-six years later it’s a classic coming-of-age story that reads like historical fiction.
The story isn’t about the U.S.S. Caine or even the ubiquitous Captain Queeg with his ball bearings. The Caine Mutiny is about Willie Keith, a spoiled rich kid who finds himself in a world unlike anything he’s ever known. A world in which he must make a decision that can and does destroy careers.
Willie wants to follow the right path. But which path is that? He could obey the orders of a superior officer, and perhaps go down with his ship. He could believe Lt Keefer’s assessment that the captain is unfit for duty and still obey orders. He could support his friend Lt Maryk, a man with true skills in seamanship. But what does that mean? It could mean dissuading Maryk from taking control of the ship. It could mean supporting Maryk’s decision to do so. And the decision must be made in the middle of a typhoon.
The Caine Mutiny won the Pulitzer Prize in 1951 for good reasons. Wouk’s words effortlessly take the reader aboard the Caine and into World War II mine-sweeping activities. He brings out the stresses of life in close quarters. Even more important, Wouk develops a classic theme as Keith struggles to become a man.

Erin McCarthy's Vegas Vampire series opener, High Stakes, is one of those light, funny vamp romances that can be gulped down in large bites and leave you feeling a little happier for it. It's been described as Vamp Chick-Lit and that just about sums it up.

And there's NOTHING wrong with that!

I strongly believe that reaction to this book in particular, and probably the series in general, will entirely depend on what you're looking for when you pick it up. Personally, I just spent several weeks reading back-to-back books that ranged from gritty and dark to emotionally significant and I just wanted to rest my brain, kick back with a book that made me laugh and know from page one that the two lead characters are going to get their HEA. No draining angst or cruel deceptions, no monstrous forces of every nature threatening world-ending horror.

A laugh here (and here and here) and a grin there (and there and there and there) was EXACTLY what I needed. Erin McCarthy delivered. In fact, that's rather what I READ McCarthy for. It's what I call Brain Candy.

And I was actually pleasantly surprised that this series opener had a wee bit more depth than I was anticipating, with the plot threads of the presidential party platform, the banished frenchman, and the deadly political opponent. Was it high drama? No. Was it enough to sink my teeth in and interest me enough to keep reading the series? Yes.

And if I wanted to be critical, I suppose I could point to Alexis' sister, Brittany, who came off a little too...borderline-zealot with her ditzy crusade to redeem the undead. That was not to my personal tastes. Scenes with her were actually a little painful. I could also possibly criticize the rather abrupt wrap up, almost like McCarthy got to a certain point and just...forced the HEA to fit within a certain page count.

Yeah, okay, those two things kept the book from getting five stars, but High Stakes is still a delicious bite of Brain Candy and I liked the overall experience of reading it. It was exactly what I was looking for.

While this was a bit of a light read and only 289 pages long the story was still very enjoyable! Having never read anything by MCcarthy before I found her very reminiscent of Mary Janice Davidson. Her language was simiallar and her characters just as spunky!

Ethan Carrick has been the President of the Vampire Nation, some 10,000 voters, for the past 39 years. As a political strategy he is attempting to find a wife who is half vampire and an asset. He thinks that he's found the perfaect candidate in sweet but pliable Britanny Baldizzi. But Britanny's feisty, short, big sister is screaming kidnap! She charges into Ethan's Vegas casino to free her sister who is spouting something about saving the souls of her new vampire freinds.

Needless to say, plans change and Ethan and Alexis are soon deep in the vampire drama together. And boy does Ethan fall for her! Several stories in fact! An interesting side story is palying out with Britanny and a mysterious frenchy as well, and you'll even feel bad for the assassin who's trying to off Ethan in the end. Stay tuned to see all the election results!
Alexsis storms into Ethan's casino looking for her sister, but she finds much, much more. Ethan's not only a vampire, but president of the vampire nation. He wants Alexsis's sister for the anomalies in her blood and as a political asset. Alexsis won't stand for it, her little sister with the biggest heart in Vegas won't be kept and used by anyone, even if she has to beat some sense into Ethan....literally.

This is a hilarious, fun, and modern take on the paranormal vampire genre. The writing is good, the storyline cohesive, and the dialogue is smooth. I giggled throughout it is a fresh take on an old theme, now a lot of the vampire stereotypes are there, it's the attitudes and the general vampire politics and population that are enlightening. The steamy scenes are super steamy and the emotional connection is adequate.

Worth the time and money I enjoyed it. Hope you do too.
What happens when you mix vampires and politics?

HIGH STAKES is a hilarious take on vampires and politics. After all, you have to laugh at the image of a vampire focusing on exit polls! Erin McCarthy infuses humor throughout this sassy but intriguing tale that is sure to make the reader laugh out loud on more than one occasion.

The relationship between Ethan and Alexis is a joy to watch as it develops. From their first meeting, sparks fly between these two very hard-headed characters. I love Alexis' attitude of never giving up. She can be a bit volatile at times, but that only enhances the strength of her character. Erin McCarthy does an excellent job at keeping Alexis likeable, however, as her insecurities over her height and figure soften her almost brash personality.

HIGH STAKES is a real pleasure to read. Erin McCarthy has written a quick, fun book that is perfect for days when you want a good dose of humor. One caution, however, as several threads are left hanging and unresolved. Readers who want all of the details tied up at the end may feel a bit disconcerted as the book is obviously a set up for the future sequels. Quite a few secondary characters are introduced who will apparently play more significant, maybe even starring, roles in later books. However, HIGH STAKES is an excellent start to the series.
