Happy Birthday to the man that tolerates my passion for yarn :)

First tidbit is that I removed the pattern on the bag on my project list (the original list). I started the filet bag and realized I had no real use for a holey bag - so decided to remove it. I finished a dishcloth during iYarny's first dishcloth Friday meetup. That was good. I did go through my numbers again and I'm a lot more confident in these percentages being close to accurate, if not actually accurate. go me. *laughs*

The big news of the week was my finishing my first ever sock. I had never knitted a sock before and after a great challenge, the first sock is done. I have already cast on the second sock and am making my way quite nicely through it. Granted, I didn't write down any information about the first sock I made (big mistake) so making the 2nd to match is going to be a challenge in itself.

My family has already asked me to make them socks too. I am pretty happy with the finished sock although I can see all the little boo-boos. But I figure they were a great learning experience and from that, I will learn and my socks will only continue to get better.

Personally, I can't wait to do socks for the kids simply because they are smaller!

I don't have much else to report other than today is the man's birthday. Yup, another year older. I really love this guy - he helps keep me in check and tolerates my little yarn addiction. I am glad he is with me - I really appreciate all that he does for me, the kids, and the household.

This is a picture of him and I last year (or the year before... hmmmm) on a hayride at a local church. I was thinner... he was younger - it all balances out in the end *laughs*

I'm not casually posting this - I'm so proud of my accomplishment I wanted to share it with you.

Today - I cast off my first sock. My first EVER knitted sock!

I rushed to put it on. And once it was on, I realized all in one moment why people knit their own socks.

It wasn't just a sock - it was an experience!

I know it may seem a little dramatic, but truly - the sock is so light and soft and it is made to fit my foot. Having it on feels absolutely wonderful. Here are ten fantastic facts about my new sock:

FACT #1
I started my sock in October 2011. I first mentioned it on my blog on October 23rd - I started them a few days prior on a trip to see my mother and the blog was written after I got home.

FACT #2
I have never done a sock before and I don't know why I decided to do a toe-up sock first. It was a challenge but I really like it and believe I'll do all my socks as toe up from here on out (at least until I fall in love with another method)

FACT #3
I finished the foot portion of a first sock and didn't know how to turn the heel, so instead of stopping all progress, I started a second sock while on a visit with my mother. I did not have a 2nd set of dpn's so I went to Hobby Lobby and bought some - and I bought the wrong size!

FACT #4
By the time I figured out I had bought the wrong dpn's (read fact 3 again if you missed it), I already had most of the foot of the 2nd sock done. I decided that I would try to turn a heel on the 2nd sock since I was going to have to remake it anyway. An that, my friends, was an epic fail.

FACT #5
I now know why people knit their own socks.

FACT #6
I did not write anything down and I didn't work from a pattern. I am having trouble remembering how many I cast on, how many I increased too, how many for the foot, heel, and ribbed leg piece. I may be in trouble.

FACT #7
It will most likely bug me that the stripes do not line up with the next sock made.... but I'm still gonna wear 'em!

FACT #8
I went to YouTube to find a video on how to do a nice stretchy bind off for a toe up sock. I found a great video by kyarns. It was easy to understand and I watched it twice before tackling my sock. I didn't even practice on a swatch!

FACT #9

Within seconds of finishing the sock, I had it on my foot.

FACT #10
Within seconds of my saying how wonderful my sock was. My children had already tried it on too. *laughs*

.....

With all that said - I will most likely be casting on my second sock this weekend and will hope to have a pair within the next couple of weeks.

I have a couple exciting announcements of all those interested in joining the iYarny virtual yarn group (linked above).

First - we have a new moderator! Peggy, or Little Lambs Crochet, has taken on the responsibility of being a moderator in the iYarny chat group and Ravelry group. She is looking at her schedule now and will be posting a meet-up time soon to expand the times we already have for iYarny....

and speaking of times.....

The current Thursday meeting has changed from a general meet-up to a charitable giving gathering. In addition to this, two more times have been added. Friday night is now Dishcloth Friday and we have a meet-up Tuesday mornings which is hosted by Kathryn of Crochet Concupiscence. The exact times are days are shown in the right column of this blog.

I would like to encourage all of you interested to also head over to Ravelry and join the conversations there. The Ravelry group will be a talking place for when we can't all get together in the chat module. There is no need for us to keep missing eachother because of timezone differences and our schedules.

I look forward to meeting and seeing you all!

Number of Project Items: 21
Number of Added Items: 148

Total Items: 169

Ok - so my numbers got a little wonky the last couple weeks and honestly, I'm not sure I have them right yet. UGH! I can only count them so many times before my eyes begin to cross. *whew* Who thought counting would be so difficult *laughs*

Oh well, I'm sure I'll go back and recount and get another number and yet another number after that. I think as long as I'm staying relatively close, then I'm doing pretty darn good. I can say that my project list items is failing miserably as the number is just kinda "stuck" - I have been working on so many added items that its almost insane to think about my original project list. I don't see all of it actually getting done - unless I completely make a driven effort to only work on those items.

I know I can do the Filet Market Bag relatively easily. I have yarn for it. I have the time as I don't think it'll take more than a few hours to put together. The living room throw is in progress, although I don't have one square done (and there will be 30 total - doh!). The table runner has been started too...... oh boy has that been started - back in November of 2011 and I'm not sure that it'll ever get done. That lil project is INSANE. So in the end, if I really push on those three, that will leave me a round afghan and an angel tree topper not finished for the year... and neither of those would technically take a lot of time either. *laughs*

So if I could put some focus into the original list, there is no reason why it couldn't get done - excluding the table runner. That was one of those "what in the world was I thinking" items. Who knows.

I'll just keep telling myself "its doable."

Seems my pooch, Andrew, is the topic of many of my off-topic photos used as photo-filler to my blog posts. This is a picture of Andrew staring out the front door waiting for the kids to come back inside. Whenever they go out he leaves whatever he is doing and goes and watches to make sure they are safe. As soon as they come back in, he returns to whatever he was doing - which is normally sleeping.

Now... off to count again. I know these can't be right!
Click on the link if you are interested in reading more about the project.

The premise of the project is to make 12 separate donations, one to each of 12 different charitable organizations of your choice.

And this .....*queue Law and Order music* ..... is my update.

Alright - pretty good week as far as the 12 for 12 project goes for me. Below is an update (where available) for my progress on each of the charitable causes selected.

1. Knitted Knockers
Website Link
My Pattern
I have not made anymore knockers to date. I want a couple of things to happen before I continue to make more.

1) I need to get my arse to Walmart with my bag-o-boobs so I can see how they look in the bra for the cup size made. I need to make sure my pattern is somewhat accurate and considering I do not have 4 different bra sizes myself, I need to use some else's bra - and Walmart seems like a good choice.

2) I want to have a sit down with some local organizations that may want the faux boobs. I have sent an email to a local hospital and a local women's health center. Both are known for treating cancer so I'm sure they have women who have had their breast (or breasts) removed. I want to sit down with them, show them what I have made, and figure out if it is something they are interested in. If it is, great! We can figure out a donation method (make and drop off, wait for an order, etc). If they are not interested, then I will ship what I have made off to the knitted knockers project since I know they have places they can give them.

So that's my update. I don't think I'll be getting to a donation this month, but we shall see.

Made 4 / Donated 0

2. Special Olympics Scarf Project
Website Link
My intentions to get to work on scarves for this project have been twarted (yea, I found use of the word YAY) multiple times over the last couple weeks. I am not giving up hope though! I have one scarf about halfway done and bought yarn for 2 more.

Made 0 / Donated 0

3. Sunshine International Blankets of Love (SIBOL)
Website Link
OK - plugging right along on my SIBOL squares. I do have a little bit of an update though. I originally thought I was going to do the 25 joined squares and make the blanket. But now I'm seeing other squares being donated and am wondering if a blanket made of all the same squares is really what they are looking for - I'm thinking no.

So what I planning on doing now is making a bunch of the square I am making (cabled heart pattern) in all sorts of colors. I'm going to box them up, not joined together, and send them off. I'm sure I'll be sending off way more squares then what is needed for 1 blanket. Then I'll drop a note in to say she can join them to make a single blanket or use them as filler squares for the other blankets she has. Either way - I'm sure she'll get use out of them.

So far so good!

Squares Made 13 / Squares Donated 0

4. Hooked on a Cause
Website Link
I've made another decision in who I will be donating to this year. This is a new project brought to me by a fellow YouTuber named bamagirl1582. She felt a conviction to start a charitable giving program for children being treated at the Children's hospital in her local area. While I tend to try and keep my charitable projects local first, I understand the importance of the hospital in her area. According to the blog, this hospital is the 10th busiest children's hospital in the United States. It is Alabama's only level one children's pediatric trauma hospital and is the largest pediatric burn center for children in the Southeastern United States. The number of children this hospital treats has to be high.

So I will be making some squares and some hats to donate. I really look forward to seeing this new project grow.

Hats Made 0 / Hats Donated 0
Squares Made 0 / Squares Donated 0

I hope you are all having a fantastic Friday morning. While it is windy and cold here, I am thankful I did not have to drive to work in the snow and that myself and my family have our health.

But this post isn't about anything personal, oh no - it is about crochet. More specifically - Crochet jobs!

For those of you who aren't aware, Kathryn over at Crochet Concupiscence has various blog post series that she maintains on either a daily or a weekly schedule. One of the daily series is called "Job Leads" - and its just that, a listing of various crochet related jobs. She goes out each day and scours the internet so we don't have to!

If you are interested in a crochet related job, be it pattern testing, writing a pattern, designing, tech editing, and a host of other possibilities related to crochet, then I suggest you head over to her blog and subscribe so you can get the listings each day.

BUT - what Kathryn is having issues with is finding those jobs. There are only so many out there she can find and she knows that many of us need or have knowledge of a crochet job. If you do or would like more information, Kathryn put up a rather comprehensive post about what she is needing from those who have crochet related jobs or are aware of crochet related jobs. (click for post)

There is a lot of information in that post about what she is needing to keep the series full of great information for us crocheters. And even if you don't want a crochet related job, pass the word along just in case someone else could benefit from the listings.

(c) Paul Bourke Website

I am starting a new series, linked as a page tab at the top of this page, called "Crocheting Concepts" - as stated on the page, this is not about concepts related to crochet. The series is a discussion, and exploration if you will, of how crochet is used to visual various mathematical and scientific concepts.

The first in the series started with hyperbolic crochet, which almost seems like a gimme considering it was brought to the forefront of crochet news with the Community Coral Reef Project. But I will leave you to read that here, if you are interested.

While hyperbolic crochet may seemed like a natural start, I think the mathematical model of the Mobius Strip is a fantastic second topic.

The Concept
August Ferdinand Mobius was a mathematician and astronomer, working as a pioneer in the field of topology. He developed the concept of the mobius strip, also called the twisted cylinder, in 1858 although he did not publish his idea. While named after August, a German mathematician named Johann Benedict Listing also came up with the same concept earlier in 1858. Why August got namesake to the concept, we may never know. By all rights, it should be called the Listing Strip.

The Mobius Strip is considered one of the simplest geometric shapes because it only has one surface and one edge. It is seamless topography, which is probably what Mobius himself was looking for. There isn't a whole lot more to say for the strip other than to talk about how you can make one AND how it has been used since discovery.

The following is a video I created demonstrating how to create a mobius strip out of paper. If you want some extra good fun, I challenge you to cut your mobius in half (down the center line). You may be surprised at what you end up with.

Unlike many mathematical concepts, the mobius strip has actually been used in art and for functionality. For example, conveyor belts are often made as a mobius strip because then each "side" gets an equal amount of wear, meaning the lifetime of the belt is extended more than if it was a standard loop. Other uses have been in creating continuous loop recording tapes and versatile electronic resistors. Artists like M.C. Escher also use the mobius strip as inspiration for their work.

Crocheting the Concept

(c) Marilyn Wallace (pattern)

The non-mathematical crocheter can easily identify the "infinity scarf" or the "twisted loop scarf" as something they enjoy looking at or have even made. They may or may not realize that these items are nothing more than a crocheted mobius strip.

A crocheted mobius can be created in one of two ways:
1. Crochet a rectangle and create the twist when complete, having a seam where the two ends are joined after twisting, or

2. Twist and join your foundation chain and then crochet in the round, creating the mobius before you finish the piece - as you crochet you just make your strip wider and wider.

If you have not crocheted an item using the concept of a mobius strip, then I highly encourage you to do so. Not only is your creation founded in mathematical roots, you will find that it has a great flow and makes for a wonderfully aesthetic piece.

Hey all! What a great week. We ended up with our first snow and lots of fun stuff going on at work so I feel my crochet has "suffered"; however, I have finished a total of 10 squares to be sent off to the SIBOL project and have made some designer tweaks to the pattern I was making for the throw for our living room sofa.

About that throw.... I purchased the book Aran Afghans to Crochet by Bonnie Barker and published by Leisure Arts. I looooove these patterns - they are gorgeous! But I have a problem with certain stitch combinations - 1) in doing some of them because they don't seem to lay right for me and 2) some I just don't like how they come out visually next to other stitches in the pattern. I posted a video on YouTube a few days ago showing the first square that I did for the pattern titled "Tan Sampler." I ended up doing some rework to the pattern to make sure I wasn't using awkward stitching (for me) and stitching that I didn't like as a combination. I'm pretty happy with what I'm coming up with but I don't think I'll be showing my progress until I get a square 100% the way I want it to be.

Other than that, I'm just chuggin' right along on my charitable giving projects. I will have to start a project for a swap I joined that has to be completed by February 25th. I'm pretty excited about the swap. I know what extras I'm going to put in the package, I'm just trying to figure out a good crocheted item to drop into the box too.

I went over my numbers quickly so I'm not 100% sure they are spot on, but I know that they are pretty darn close, if anything.

As always, I like to include a picture with my blog posts and when I don't have any of my crocheted goods, I default to some other strange picture from my cell phone.

This one is a play-doh worm critter created by my daughter..... I think it's pretty darn cute.
I know that having only one hour a week isn't good for the majority. Some folks can't make it and other folks just forget.

So I'm looking for your input!

There are two polls below: one for the day of the week and the other for the time of day. You can pick more than one option on each poll but I do ask that you do not select more than three. Then, as we move forward with adding new times, we can work with the majority based on these polls.

Making hyperbolic crochet pieces is not terribly difficult; however, to get spheres is a little more challenging. The base idea is to increase each row in a set pattern. An example would be crocheting in 3 stitches then putting 2 stitches in the next. As along as you increase in a row in a set pattern and every row after that using that same pattern, your ruffly, hyperbolic creation will emerge from your hook.

But let's look at hyperbolic crochet and where it came from.

Daina Taimina is a name synonymous with hyperbolic crochet. Taimina had seen models attempted in paper. While good, she knew that if they could be created in paper, the same models would be more successful if created using crochet - and in 1997 she created her first hyperbolic crochet piece. I have seen it written that crochet is truly the only way to successfully represent hyperbolic space - doesn't that make you feel special as a crocheter?

But what is it? Why is it significant? Why does it get such a fancy, completely enigmatic name?

When a person begins learning geometry, they are usually first exposed to Euclid Geometry. This "high school geometry" is based on postulates established by Euclid, a man considered the Father of Geometry. Euclid established a deductive system in which his approach to geometry was about proofs through axioms. Some of his concepts include, but are not limited to 1) the idea that the shortest distance between two points is one unique straight line and 2) the sum of all angles in any triangle will equal 180 degrees (which consequently is the same degree of a line).

But the most important of Euclid's postulates that conflicts to a postulate in hyperbolic space is this: in Euclid's 2D world, if you have a line and a point outside of the line (not included in the line), there is only ONE line that can be drawn through the point that would never touch the first line.

But because we do not live in a 2D world, this is not necessarily true.

Hyperbolic space is a non-Euclidean geometric space that views space more as a saddle, a space that is not flat. This type of geometry, also called Lobachevskian Geometry, named after the Russian mathematician who helped further the concepts, has a different postulate than Euclid when it comes to parallel lines. While Euclid said that only one line could be drawn through a point and never touch another pre-existing line, the postulate for hyperbolic space states that two or more lines can be drawn through a single point and never intersect with another predefined line.

What a big difference, eh!? In fact, the complete opposite. Everything regarding hyperbolic space postulates looked great until someone came along and said "prove it."

Lettuce Sea Slug

The pro-"saddle space" mathematicians knew they had to be right. They knew that this "saddle space" existed - they could see it! Think of a leaf of lettuce. Or a Pringle's potato chip..... or a sea slug - these are all hyperbolic shapes... and clearly - they exist.

But a slug doesn't usually agree to being used as a chalkboard.

What we see in these shapes is that they can move - the saddle shape is not always the same. Grasping the ruffling, saddle-shaped space with our 2D minds and concepts is very difficult.

And what is one of the best features of crochet? It's flexible. The old paper models were not near as flexible as what crochet is. Crochet can move fluidly much like our little friend the lettuce sea slug.

Taimina's model using crochet is a response to "prove it" when it comes to the parallel postulate for hyperbolic crochet. As you can see in this image, courtesy of SciTechBlog and Daina herself, you can see the postulate is true.

The postulate states that if given a line (the one across the bottom) and one point, there are two or more lines that can intersect through the point but never cross the original given line. As you can see, the bend of all three lines, because of the hyperbolic shape of the space, can go through the same point and never cross the line on the bottom.

Crochet gives us a visual of this postulate. This means on every leaf of lettuce and every tiny sea slug, we have this same postulate. But we can bend and shape the crochet, we can create the lines (as shown in the image above) so others can see what we are saying - and we can see that it is true.

Pretty darn amazing, eh?

As it turns out, coral is also hyperbolic shaped, which is why the creation of the Community Reef for the Smithsonian, a project driven by Margaret Wertheim, became an easy task in reference to what needed to be done, not the volume of what was done.

(c) Smithsonian Institute Website

I am planning a trip with my family to a museum in Iowa to look at a satellite piece of the Smithsonian's Community Reef, or the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project (pictured). I have a serious appreciate for this project on so many levels: 1) a person interested in preserving our environment, 2) a mother wishing to teach her children about nature and the destruction of our environment, 3) a crocheter that knows the effort involved in a project of this magnitute, and 4) a mathematician.

The last level of interest is what I wish to discuss in this post, and not necessarily only about the Commurnity Reef Project, but that crocheters are working in a mathematical craft.

No need for math anxiety though - there will not be a test at the end of this post. *smiles*

Hyperbolic crochet are advanced mathematical concepts being applied to make something beautiful. But my guess is that very few of us think about how crochet is mathematics, even at its most basic form.

I tell you to crochet me a scarf. I want it made of shell stitches with 2 double crochet at both ends to frame in the design. I want my scarf to be roughly 6 inches wide. How would you know how many to chain for the foundation?

Mathematics.

I want you to crochet me a hat with a starting circle of 8 stitches. You need to increase over every row as you would a normal hat. How many stitches will you increase each row by as you work? How would you know?

Mathematics.

You have an existing pattern but you want to make it wider or taller. How do you know how much more to add?

You got it.... mathematics.

We, as crocheters, use mathematics every time we pick up the hook. For those of you who follow patterns, you are working against someone else's calculations. For a person who wishes to adventure into designing your own patterns - you are working with mathematics, even if you aren't aware.

See - nothing to be scared of here. I didn't ask you once to figure out any of the problems presented, but if you want to just for funsies, you can post your answers in the comments box *chuckles*

My intent, as a mathematic lovin' crocheter, is to to explore different mathematical avenues and how crochet either helped advance the concepts, helps prove concepts, or just uses concepts to make really pretty pieces. The first of these will be a post about hyperbolic crochet.

A new website has launched and I am proud to have some patterns listed among the many creative patterns. The website, called Recycled Into Yarn, www.recycledn2yarn.com, is a growing directory of patterns and instructionals from various individuals looking outside the box and as a consequence, helping the environment.

I look forward to seeing how this website directory grows and what others are coming up with that I can try too!
Click on the link if you are interested in reading more about the project.

The premise of the project is to make 12 separate donations, one to each of 12 different charitable organizations of your choice.

And this..... is my update.

I know that I have yet to pick all 12 and I also think I'll be donating more than once to each of my chosen charities. I am also looking at more well-known charities for crocheted items and seeing if I cannot make a local counterpart. Such as instead of giving to a known chemo cap organization for mass distribution, visit my local cancer center and see if they'd prefer the donation instead. I am still being inspired by the larger project efforts and may, in fact, donate to them too.

As I go along you will see charities added (with links to websites where available) and my response to them be it a local alternative or a donation to the project.

This... is my 12 for 12.

My overall goal is to have the same or more organizations/projects listed with a progress report than the number of the month we are in. Example: right now I have 3 projects listed - that would equate to March, the third month of the year. If I go passed March and have not added any, then my guess is that I am falling behind a little in my charitable giving project.

I'd like to point out as well that if you have a charitable project suitable for crochet items, shoot me a message. I would love to hear from you. I could add you to the list. If anything, I can add you to my charity giving list (tab at the top of the page).

I would also like to say that I do feel a little awkward putting this out there. I feel donating and giving of oneself is most treasured if it is altruistic. I am not looking for any sort of recognition - I actually contemplated against participating. But - in the end, I figured if others see it being done, it may catch on like a virus. A little bug you want to catch and pass along because in the end, it makes the world a better place.

So.... here we go!

1. Knitted Knockers
Website Link
My Pattern
This is one of the first programs that came to mind when I decided to join the 12 for 12 Project. I read about it months ago and thought it was a very clever idea, but I knew I was not an experienced enough knitter to take on the challenge. I am not quite sure why I didn't think about crocheting a knocker back then, but I have now. I had trouble with the crochet pattern listed on the website which is why I decided to create my own.

As of January 8th, I have made 4 knockers. It takes approximately 2 hours for a D cup knocker, which isn't too bad. I was lucky that someone had given me some poly-fill last year so I'm totally prepared with supplies to crochet knockers.

This is one of those charitable projects where I want to look local first. I have sent an email to a local hospital that houses a prominent cancer treatment facility along with a women's center that has a focus on women's breast health. Hopefully I will hear back and be able to set up a meeting time with someone from the facilities to show them the crochet knocker and to find out if it is something they would be interested in. If they are not, I will be shipping my crocheted knockers off and have them distributed by Knitted Knockers.

Made 4 / Donated 0

2. Special Olympics Scarf Project
Website Link
This is a project that I was already participating in so I figured I should add it to the list. I have not been able to get crackin' on a lot of scarves so I'm hoping the 12 for 12 Project will help me kick it into high gear. My goal is to make at least one scarf a week, perhaps make that my focus when in the iYarny group. Then, by mid February, have several to send off to one of the states' offices for Special Olympics. I would contribute to my home state of Illinois; however, the deadline has passed and the state made goal. (yay)

I figure when I am ready to donate, I will go and find a state that needs them most with a deadline after the current date.

Made 0 / Donated 0

3. Sunshine International Blankets of Love (SIBOL)
Website Link
If you blog, then chances are you have heard of Sunshine International Blankets of Love, or SIBOL for short. The purpose of SIBOL is to put together blankets and donate them to nursing homes and charities for the elderly. The reason Sue, the founder of SIBOL, decided this was her charitable project is written out in a lovely story about her grandmother. It is touching and hits home with many of us.

My goal is to send Sue 25 squares to make a blanket. Heck, maybe 50 to donate. I don't know. I have found my first square pattern and will be crocheting it tonight. I look forward to assisting with the wonderful and touching mission to show someone that we do care.

Boy oh boy! What a week of crochet. I have been testing out my Faux Boob pattern for all the different cup sizes. I really think I'm going to have to take my bag o' boobs to Walmart and try them in some of the bras there. I know its going to look strange, but I really think it'll help me gauge if I'm on target with them.

If you are curious about why I'm making faux breasts, then you need to keep your eyes peeled on my blog as I have joined Crochet Concupiscence's project called 12 for 12. I will be posting my check-in post later today, so please keep your eyes peeled for that. I know I'll definitely do the 2 check-ins per month, but I don't think I'll have a list totally ready by then. I want to research each group/project I find and see if it is something that I can donate locally rather than sending it off. I really do advocate for donating locally first and then branch out. I know there is a lot of need here in this city and I'd like to try and help it. So - yea, that post is coming soon.

Other than that, I have started a scarf for an order. It started out as knit but I know it'll go a lot faster in crochet. So I made the executive decision to frog it and start over in crochet. I'm about 1/4 done with it and I've only been working on it for about an hour. Not to shabby. Because I've added some new items that aren't done, then my overall percentage has gone down a little.... but that's ok!

I should be posting my FOTH video (Fresh off the Hook) this Monday.

I'm also going to be announcing a bit of a job/contest related to iYarny in the next few days. Keep a look out for that one! As for iYarny, we had our second meet this last Thursday. There were two other gals and I had a great time chatting with them. So, if you have some time available during our meet-up times, don't be too shy to join. You don't have to go on camera but you do have to have fun! *smiles*

OH - and yes, we are looking at having more meet-up times.

Thank you all again for being such a wonderful support system for my crochet efforts. I really do appreciate every comment made and I feel like I am really getting to know those of you who regularly read my blog.

Happy Crocheting!
I hope everyone is having a fantastic Saturday.

I'm taking a quick moment to announce a new Ravelry group designed to be a support forum to iYarny. Obviously, you have to be a member of Ravelry to join the forum, but that shouldn't too bad because membership is free and of course, you get the bonus of using the website for other forum interactions, patterns, organizing stash, and a host of other yarn related fun.

The point of the group is to be support to the online group. We have to accept that not everyone will be able to join into the scheduled meet-ups. By using the forum at Ravelry, I can make announcements, we can have conversation outside of the chat module simply because someone in the UK may not be up to chat with a fellow yarnie in the US - they can then have delayed conversations in the forum rather than being frustrated at not having a good time to meet in the chat module.

I also will have the benefit of being able to track membership a little better. Yes - you can become a member of the chat module group, but I think because the group is currently "open" we will have a lot of people joining in the chats that may not be a member of the group. If a person deliberately goes to Ravelry, then they have to join the group in order to post there. It also opens up the group to people we may never see in the chat module but still wish to participate.

The chat module will continue to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I am looking to add some more scheduled chat times soon, some themed and some not. If you are interested in hosting a meet-up of your own, shoot me an email and we can get something set up.

Also watch for a little job/contest associated to iYarny in the very near future!

So, interested in joining up? Here is the link to the iYarny Ravelry Group.

I have been looking to donate to the Knitted Knockers cause - only locally. I know I'm not a great knitter so a knitted pattern really wasn't going to work for me. I turned to my trusty friend crochet.

I found one pattern on the internet by the Happy Hooker (link to that pattern here) - and while it was good enough to give me an idea of what I was needing to do, the instructions did not do much for me or what I was trying to do. I knew that I would have to come up with something on my own. Inspired by that pattern, I bring you my version of the faux boob, or foobs as Teresa Fee calls them.
Please: If you choose to make this pattern and have any input, please comment below and let me know.

I do ask one thing: If you make a breast from this pattern, do not sell it. Use it for yourself, give it to a friend or family member, or give it away for free to either Knitted Knockers or a cancer center. The idea of this is to be for charity - to help a woman in need. Selling the finished item, either for a set price or for shipping, seems odd to me.

If you happened upon this pattern as a person who is in need of a faux boob, contact me via email and let me know. If I can squeeze it in, I will personally make your faux boob and send it your way (I need to know your cup size and your preferred colors). If you do not want me to make your faux boob, use the link to Knitted Knockers and ask them to help.

Because we all crochet with different tensions, you may need to adjust your hook size. If you are questioning what size boob you are making, reference this website that offers bra fitting measurements (link).

The Faux Boob
By Cris

Level: Intermediate to Experienced (but Beginners should give it a whirl too!)

Needed:
Standard Worsted Weight Yarn - Caron Simply Soft is a little too thin (something soft!)
Size H hook
Crochet row marker (or a safety pin or a small scrap of yarn)
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Regular Polyfill

Abbreviations:
sc - single crochet
st - stitch
sl - slip stitch
prev - previous
rpt - repeat
btn - between
invdec - decrease
dec - decrease
yo - yarn over

NOTE: for the invdec, your hook will be working from left to right on the back rim of the boob (if you set your work down on the table, your hook will be on the edge farthest from you). To do the invdec, you will need to use the back loops only for the dec. You will put the hook through the back loop of st 1, put the hook through the back loop of st 2, yo and pull through 2 loops on the hook, yo and pull through last 2 loops on hook. Be sure to keep it tight.

If your hook is closest to you when lay it on the table, then you would go through the front loops only (you should not be doing this for this particular pattern)

You can replace the invdec with a regular decrease if you prefer.

TO BEGIN
To start this pattern, put 6 sc into the magic loop. Place your marker into the first sc. Pull the magic circle closed. Do not sl to join.

Row 1
sc in each of the first 5 sc's of the magic circle stitches
sl into the last sc from the magic circle stitches (5sc, 1 sl)
Move your marker to the sl
ch 1

Your work is cupping "away" from you after this row. Force the cup to go the other way. This will form your nipple.

Turn your work

Row 2
The next stitch you work will be INTO the sl from the end of row 1
2 sc the first 5 st from row 1
1 sc in each of the next 2 st from row 1 (12 sc)
sl to join

Move marker to the last st made

Row 3 (begin to work in a spiral)

*sc in next st
2 sc in next st*
rpt btn * to end of row for a total of 18 sc

Move marker to the last st made

Row 4
*sc in next 2 st
2 sc in next st*
rpt btn * to end of row for a total of 24 sc

Move marker to the last st made

Now is a good time to form the nipple. You can stitch some poly-fill inside the nipple or a small bead (my daughters idea) to hold the nipple out if you find that it is not holding its shape well. I prefer to use the tail from the magic circle to tighten up the nipple. I thread the tail onto a tapestry needle and feed it up to the side of the nipple. I weave the thread in and out of the 6 sc's at the base of the nipple and pull it tight. This pulls those stitches in and makes a nicer shaped nipple. I then pass the tail back through to the inside of the boob and weave in the tail a few times, closing up any gaps between stitches close to the needle. I cut the tail off, leaving about 5 inches that will remain insight the faux boob.

The nipple is also a good size that if you wished to change colors, you could do so here. If you made your nipple a darker tan or brown, you could change colors to the flesh tone you are trying to emulate.

Row 5
rpt btn * to end of row for a total of 72 st

Move marker to last st made

NOTE: You can go higher in cup size by simply by adding one row of sc without an increase, and then increasing the count of sc between the 2sc increase two more than the last cup size.

Row 16 - 18
sc around the total number of stitches from the last increase round worked to obtain the cup size you are working (to the marked st)

NOTE: Continue to the row indicated below that matches the cup size you have made. If you made larger than a D cup, then you need to do the following: each of the rows starts with sc'ing into a set number of stitches. Whatever the last number of stitches you made between increases for your cup size, subtract 1 from that. For example, if the last number you did was to sc into 19 st between increases, then you will sc 18 times and invdec. Continue this subtracting one stitch in between invdec as you work your way in closing the hole on the back of the boob. The below instructions only walk you through a size D cup and smaller.

NOTE: The next rows begin the decrease row. As long as your increases counted our correctly, if you are off a few stitches on the decreases, this is not detrimental. Start at the row that matches the cup size you increased too.

Row 19 (start here if you made a D cup and continue to the end)

Row 20 (start here if you made a C cup and continue to the end)
Remove the marker

Row 29
*sk 1 st, sl in next st*
rpt btn * until the opening is closed enough to finish off

NOTE: a larger boob will require you to go around more to close the opening.

finish off the boob by cutting a really long tail. Tie off and stitch the hole shut.

There are other ways you can finish off your boob after weaving in the tail. You can:
1. Attach the tail through the nipple to make the backside of the boob concave, but be warned it will pull the nipple inward a little,
2. Stitch around the outside edge of the top of the breast to "flatten" the back side and force the boob to sit with the domed side in front and a flatter side on the back. By stitching the top you can force the top side to be thinner than the bottom, giving the breast a more teardrop shape when you look at it from the side.

I personally prefer finishing method number 2 but only half way around (the top side) as I can push the fabric anyway I want and a quick stitch around the edge makes the top side more flat and the bottom more rounded, like a real breast.

Kathryn was interested in the new iYarny group I announced last week and shot me a few questions. Interested in reading the interview: click here!

If you haven't heard of iYarny or you vaguely remember me saying something about it *chuckles* then please click on the page tab above - the rules of the group are outlined there and the chat module is waiting for you to join the fun!

Our second meeting will be tomorrow night, Thursday January 4th 2012 at 9pm EST. I really am looking forward to meeting you all and chatting it up. I had a great time last week (and got 4 colored squares done on my special olympics scarf!). I am also hoping to bounce some ideas off members in the chat tomorrow regarding some different types of scheduled meet-ups, so come join us if you would like the scoop first hand first.

I want to thank Kathryn for doing this interview and spreading the word of iYarny. While I'm sure everyone would like there to be no homelessness, the truth is that it exists and only so much can be done to fight this war on a daily basis. What we can do in between is to make life tolerable for those without. This is where the plan mats come into play.

The idea is simple - crochet plarn sleeping mats for the homeless.

Who?
A lot of groups are coming together making plarn sleeping mats their top priority project to ensure that while an individual is homeless or down on their luck, they have a sleeping mat they can call their own. Many of the groups I found online were church groups; however, I did find articles about established yarn groups and university students.

The best part of the "who" is that anyone can volunteer their time to this type of volunteer project.

Crocheters do the obvious - crochet.

Non-crocheters have a role in this type of group because they can spend their time organizing the bags by color, cutting the bags into strips, and joining the strips to make plarn.

Where?
It doesn't take much to find out this is happening across the United States and in other countries.

Why?
Sadly, many cities have shelters but those shelters fill up quick. There are also cities and towns without shelters.

Mats made of cloth may be soft but they are not resistant to the rain and bugs. Plarn mats are water resistant, light, and somewhat soft. Plarn sleeping mats are also great for temperature control which means they can be used in all seasons.

The greatest benefit of this type of project is that it is helps two-fold: each mat prevents around 700-900 plastic bags from ending up in a landfill AND each mat lets someone out there know they are important, regardless of what their living situation is.

It would be nice if we all had thousands or millions of dollars to donate each year to end homelessness and hunger - unfortunately, that's not a reality. Making plarn sleeping mats allows the average person who wants to help a means of doing so and showing someone else they care.

When?
Now.

That's right - now is as good a time as any.

The plarn mats can be used year round and are appreciated by those who receive them.

There is no set time for this type of donation. It may be difficult to find a local group if they haven't had any sort of media coverage, but if a group exists, you could find out by contacting your local shelter(s). If they are already receiving this type of donation, then they would most likely put you in contact with the organizer already sending plarn mats their way. If there is no group in your area - start one. If you do not want to start a group, then feel free to make the mats one by one and donate them as you complete each.

There is no timeline for this type of donation. Each one donated is timely as far as the recipient is concerned.

How?
Finding a tutorial on how to make the plarn sleeping mats took a little digging but I found a video tutorial on the Lutheran Church Ministries Website. The tutorial can be found by clicking here. The video tutorial is really good and walks you through making plarn from various plastic bags and how to make the sleeping mat with a handle (for carrying during the day).

Unfortunately, the tutorial does not show how a "pillow" area can be made; however, I believe if you make the mat longer than suggested and fold over the edge, you could stitch it down one side and across the sleeping area of the mat, ending up with an open-ended "pillow area" that would hold items when the mat is rolled up.

As many of you could figure, I am a huge fan of the blog and website Crochet Concupiscence. Kathryn is very knowledgable in crochet and crochet happenings and is always willing to share what she knows with the rest of the crochet community. If you haven't already, I highly suggest you follow her blog.

Another fun fact many of you are aware of is that I am a major supporter of charitable giving. Crochet is one of those ways that one can create and donate to local organizations in need or even those halfway across the world thanks to the power of the postal service.

I was very pleased to log into Google Reader and find a wonderful post by Kathryn called Join Me: 12 in '12 Charity Crochet Project.

I am hoping to be able to join Kathryn in this project as I am one to really advocate for charitable giving, especially with crochet and knit. I encourage you to read more of the details on Kathryn's post (linked above); however, to sum it up - she will be donating to 12 different charities - one a month - in the year 2012 and she is inviting you to do the same. What a wonderful idea!

In her introductory post to the project, she invites anyone else interested in participating on over to to join in on the fun. She has listed out her 12 charities (I'll leave that for your discovery). I definitely will be signing up for this project - now to figure out what charities I'll be donating to!

Per the project, I will be posting twice a month, on Sundays, talking about my charitable project progress. Unlike Kathryn, I'm going to announce what charity I am crocheting for in the first post of that month and then give a progress report in my second post for the month. Each month will contain the information/links from any previous months giving. This Sunday coming will be the 2nd Sunday of the month and I will be deciding who I will be crocheting for at that time.

Thank you, Kathryn, for a wonderful project that inspires the human spirit.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
This is one of the few Year of Projecsts posts I've done live - ie I haven't set it up ahead of schedule and let blogger auto-post it for me. I don't know why - I looked at the post a couple days ago and just figured "eh - I'll work on it later." Well, here it is Sunday ... later... and I don't have anything ready *laughs*

This last week has been one free of crochet. I don't know why - it just has. I have been knitting on a scarf for a co-worker (a paid gig) so perhaps that is why? I really do wish knitting went faster. Oh well.... I guess it doesn't help that when I go through my project bags the majority of it is knitting.

I am hoping to pick up my table runner project again (you remember that one, don't you?) I have made no progress on the table runner since last we met (late November, I'm guessing). But that's ok. I got a ton of Christmas crafting done and crafting for the craft fair I participated in a couple weeks ago.

My dearest man went out today with my daughter (the model) in tow to take some well lit photos of some of the things I worked on the last couple weeks for the craft show.

This tam is actually one of my favorite items I made. I have no idea when or where I picked up the yarn, but it is a very soft acrylic with a slight shimmer to the yarn... which of course does not show up in the photos.

Go figure.

I ended up adding a bunch of the items to my etsy shop, if you are interested (linked in the right column). You don't even have to buy - I was mostly just impressed with the photos the man took for me *laughs*

Oh well - today will end up being a pretty sedate day. Everyone is relaxing a bit. The kids don't go back to school until Wednesday and I have tomorrow off too. I'll be popping some of my Zesty Turkey Meatloaf into the oven in a couple hours so do know that in a few I'll be sitting down to a nice, hearty home-cooked meal that is friendly to my weight loss adventure.

If you are interested in the recipe I'll be making, I posted it at SparkRecipes: Family Size Ground Turkey Meatloaf
