EASY PEASY SHAMROCK

Growing up, St. Patrick’s Day was always a big deal; not because we actually celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, but because it was my dad’s birthday. We would celebrate by taking him out wherever he wanted to go and then making sure that whatever color his cake was, it absolutely, positively wasn’t green. I guess every cake he had through his early 20s was always covered in a horrible pastel green frosting. If my dad had his way, green frosting would be banned from the planet effective immediately.

The only other thing we did on St. Patrick’s Day was wear something green. If you weren’t wearing green, you would get pinched… by everybody. The longer the day went on, the harder those pinches became. When I told my kids and niece and nephew about that tradition, they thought it was hilarious. They also begged me to make them something green to wear in case anyone is in a pinching mood that day.

A SPIKE FOR PHINNEAS

This is my baby, the youngest of my 4 kids, and he is turning 4 today. As I have mentioned before, I like to let my kids (or any kids I am crafting for) have a hand in the design process. Sometimes the kid in question has very detailed and specific demands and, sometimes, they just pick the color. Phinneas went yarn shopping with me, picked out a skein of orange and a skein of gray, and then announced he needed a scarf for his birthday. He was so excited that I didn’t have the heart to tell him that he would most likely have to put it away until next year. Our winter seems to have passed.

HEARTS ON A STRING SCARF

OK, I didn’t plan on making anything specifically for Valentine’s Day this year, but then my oldest daughter told me that she had to wear something with hearts on it for school this Friday. I had to think of something quick that used some yarn from my stash. This is what I came up with. Since my older daughter is at school now, I talked my younger daughter into modeling the scarf for me. She hates pink, things that match and fixing her hair. She was a good sport though and agreed, with very little bribing, to have her picture taken for the blog.

ARIES HAT

This is my niece Aries. She, along with several of the other children in my life, requested that I make her a hat. Unfortunately for them, temperatures are already averaging in the 70s here and we even hit 82 the other day. That has not deterred the kids’ desires for winter accessories, so be prepared to see lots of pictures of kids in shorts and t-shirts wearing beanies and scarves. Not that I am complaining, mind you. I have spent plenty of time in places that were covered in snow a good deal of the time and I definitely appreciate the beautiful Arizona “winter.”

This is my nephew Adian. He has been begging me to make him a hat since late last year and, because I finally finished all of my holiday crafting, I could make it for him. He picked the colors and told me how long to make it. In case it isn’t glaringly obvious by now, I love to crochet. I mean, I absolutely love it. Because of this, I make a ton of crocheted gifts for the various people in my life. Some gifts are well received and others are not. I am lucky that there are only a few people who have treated my yarn-y offerings with disdain, because that is the worst. I am equally lucky that I have people who adore the things I make for them. My sister-in-law is one such person. She knows how much work goes into homemade gifts and has a way of making the crafter feel as though they have just painted the Sistine Chapel. When I found out she was expecting another girl, I knew I wanted to make something for the upcoming little one. I wanted it to be simple and pretty, so I made these booties.

HAPPY TOWEL DAY

he Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is my all time favorite book. I discovered it quite by accident as a teenager and have read it enough that I am on at least my fifth copy. I decided to mark Towel Day this year by making a set of Hitchhiker’s finger puppets and I put the finishing touches on them at 11:30 last night. Happy Towel Day to my fellow nerds and I hope you are a frood who really knows where your towel is.

Materials needed:

Small amount of size 10 tan crochet thread

Arms (use tan and light blue crochet thread and make 2):

Round 1: using tan crochet thread, make an adjustable ring, ch1, 4 sc in ring, join. (4 sc)

Round 2: ch1, 2 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, join. (8 sc)

Round 3: ch 1, 1 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, join. (8 sc)

Round 4: change to the light blue crochet thread, ch 1, 1 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, do not join.

Rounds 5 – 12: 1 sc in each st around, do not join. (8 sc) At the end of round 12, leave an 8 inch tail for sewing and finish off. Sew arms to the sides of puppet’s body.
