Here is some biographical information about Hide Terada and Dr. Richard Zakia.

Hide Terada

My name is Hide (he-day). I was born in Tokyo, Japan, and came to the United States by myself when I was 14 years old. I grew up shooting pictures, but my real exposure to photojournalism developed during my college days at North Carolina State University. My career as a photojournalist started with a small newspaper. But under the guidance of Dave LaBelle, formerly of the Ventura County Star, I worked my way to a larger daily circulation newspaper which included a local section of the Los Angeles Times. My images have been published through wire services like The Associated Press and Scripps Howard News Service. Now my focuses are journalistic wedding coverage, short term and long term editorial projects, portraiture and fine art photography.

Former staff photographer of local edition for the Los Angeles Times/TCN. Former full-time correspondent for the Ventura County Star. Nation wide publication provided by AP, Scrips Howard News Service, Corbis, and other media agencies.

Dr. Richard Zakia

Dr Zakia is Professor Emeritus at Rochester Institute of Technology where he taught photography for 34 years. He is the author of 12 books on photography and imaging. These include Perception and Imaging, Third Edition-Photography a Way of Seeing.

He also served as a photographic engineer in r & d at Kodak. Dr Zakia is a co-author of Basic Photographic Materials and Processes and The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography.

He has worked directly with many highly regarded photographers including Ansel Adams, Minor White and Edward Weston.

The depth of his knowledge regarding photography and its processes is only surpassed by his infectious desire to teach others what he has learned.

He lives nearby in Apex, NC

Friday evening August 1st 2008 the gallery will be open from 6-8PM to accept registrations and $15 fee for the Crocker's Mark Gallery/RFG Summer Project [08].

At this point there are 13 additional spaces left.

Friday there will be information regarding submission of your photography, a timetable of events from this point forward through the announcement of the winning entries Friday September 5th etc.

There will also be information regarding matting and printing your work and how they will be presented.

Hide Terada plans to stop by at some point during the evening. Dr Zakia will not be available Friday evening but will be present at the Tuesday Meetup. Hide and Dr Zakia are our jurists.

Bring your questions either night. You can start shooting for this project starting tomorrow through September 1st.

We will have some form of refreshment and finger food tomorrow night.

This is the 3rd annual Raleigh Flickr group Summer Project [08]

This juried competition is open to Raleigh area photographers and members of the Triangle area Flickr Groups.

General Information and rules:

There will be a $15 entry fee, one entry per person. Registration due no later than August 5th 2008 unless prior arrangements have be made with the gallery.

Work must be new and must not have been published on Flickr .

Images must be taken between August 1st and September 1st . Anything goes. The basic image must be photographic, but there will be no restrictions on subject, use of Photoshop or any restrictions as to type of camera, film or digital.

Work must be delivered to the gallery by Tuesday September 2nd

Work must be matted but not framed and be no larger than 11” x 14” overall.

There will be a limitation of 50 entrants on a first come first served basis

There will be monetary awards of $250, $125 and $75

Submitted work will hang in Crocker’s Mark Gallery from First Friday September 5th until the end of the month and entrants will have the option of offering their work for sale.

The judging of the work will be blind (no, not blind judges) but no names on the images.

The jurist pool will be comprised of professional photojournalist and educators. More on that at our organizational PARTY! First Friday, August 1st at the gallery. More on the party tomorrow.

We will also have a Virtual Gallery online.

There’s a song by Pete Townshend called “Pure and Easy” in which the songwriter seeks “the simple secret of the note in us all.” I am using photography, that most documentary of arts, to explore the abstract qualities of concrete things and the surreal qualities of real things. I try to see in a different way the things everybody sees everyday, and create images that turn reality on its head.

Even so, my photographs are prints from 35mm negatives and there are no digital or darkroom manipulations in the printing. Except for minor cropping in a few images, you are seeing what the camera saw.

T.S. Eliot said good poetry communicates before it is understood. An image that does the same strikes us on a fundamental level that we all share, and moves us closer to the simple secret of that universal note, “playing so free like a breath rippling by.”

Wayne Riggs has recently joined the artist community in Raleigh but he has been producing art around the world for the past 30 years. From his resume...

Born in Los Angeles, California USA, 1949
US Navy Radio Communications, E5 Transmitters/Controller (1968 - 1972)
Raised in Iowa and after the military service (Vietnam veteran) returned to receive a degree in fine arts Photography. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1977. He worked there for 12 years. In that fall and winter 1986-87, Mr. Riggs went to France to paint, returning to Atlanta in the spring. He moved to Florida in 1988 where he lived and worked until 1991, whereupon he returned to France and after a short stay moved to Rome. Mr. Riggs then lived in Rome for eight years before moving outside of Rome staying another four years by the sea. In 2003 he returned to America where he is presently living

In My Garden

My showing of work entitled “In My Garden” begins with flowers grown this past year at my home in Virginia. Working with two of my loves, gardening and imaging,
I began the process of interpreting the flowers in various forms. The images are printed on medias including rice paper and textured handmade fiber papers.

From one image, I created various pieces to show the different ways in which a flower can be envisioned. My collection includes black and white prints as well as hand colored pastel images. Utilizing various shapes and sizes coincides with the diverse shapes of the flower subjects. This show is the beginning of a series that will expand as more flowers bloom and more ideas come to pass.

This exhibit features a new series of paintings by Rachel Herrick addressing the past, present and future of North Carolina's mental health care system. Herrick worked in cooperation with Dix Hospital to explore the hospital's campus and capture the evocative remains of its architecture as a kind of cultural landscape. 25% of sales from the exhibit will be donated to the Wake County branch of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI-Wake).

The exhibition explores Dorothea Dix Hospital & benefits the mentally ill

Artist Rachel Herrick’s exhibition “Good Intentions: Dorothea Dix Hospital” will be at Crocker’s Mark Gallery (613 West Morgan Street, Raleigh) June 1- July 20, 2007.

An opening reception will be held June 1 from 6-9 p.m. 25% of sales from the exhibit will be donated to the Wake County branch of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI-Wake).

“It was discovered that the insane were not beasts and demons, but men whom disease had left disarmed and wounded in the struggle of life…”

--Dix Hospital Superintendent Eugene Grissom in his 1874 hospital report

Dorothea Dix Mental Hospital is closing after 150 years of treating North Carolina’s mentally ill. Many of the buildings already sit quiet and empty. Their wide, dirty windows, empty staircases and rotten moldings are crumbling architectural reminders of the care that went into planning the hospital and the great optimism of its original mission to heal the insane.

Today hardly anyone can remember what the original use of any given building was. Over the years Dix’s landscape has shifted and bent to meet the needs of the ever-growing flood of patients.

One former physician described working at Dix as wading through “seas of obstacles.” Over-extended and under-funded, mental health providers appear shell-shocked when asked about their work—an expression echoed on the faces of patients and their families.

The buildings and the people are exhausted, yet continue in their good intentions and willingness to do whatever it takes to ease suffering.

This art is meant to be evocative of the troubled and complex history of mental health care at Dorothea Dix, and provocative about the future. Is there something to be learned from the ruin of this old hope?

About the artist

Rachel Herrick has worked as an artist for over a decade and her art has been exhibited around the country. In the fall of 2006 Herrick was commissioned by the town of Cary NC to create public art out of recycled fire hydrants. In addition to being a professional artist Herrick is the Exhibitions Coordinator for Raleigh's Visual Art Exchange, a non profit arts organization, and teaches art to blind K-12 students at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in the Outreach Program.

Herrick’s work reflects her artistic interest in human perception and vision, which comes in part from her experience with pseudo tumor cerebri (PTC), a brain disease that damaged her optic nerve at the age of seven. She frequently uses the interplay of her corrected and uncorrected vision to engage viewers with scenes that are simultaneously familiar and foreign, like something glimpsed out of the corner of the eye.

Herrick explores cultural landscapes by painting the places we live or have lived and capturing the fingerprints of our traditions and habits. In 2006 Herrick’s series “Diplopia” addressed urban development and the juxtaposition of classic and contemporary architecture. In June 2007 Herrick will unveil her newest series of paintings on Dorothea Dix Hospital and the treatment of the mentally ill.
