Scouts from all over the area - Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Daisies, Brownies, Girl Scouts, and their families - will post flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day. Come in full Scout uniform. The event opens at 8:00am with a flag ceremony, then participants will scatter to put up 19,000 flags in about an hour. This is truly an amazing sight.

The Crownsville Veterans Cemetery is located at 1122 Sunrise Beach Road in Crownsville. For more information plus a map, visit http://www.mdva.state.md.us/cemeteries/crownsville.html.

Remember our military heroes this Memorial Day!

The registration deadline for the Camp Tomahawk summer day camp is Wednesday, April 8. Printed forms with all attachments must be dropped at Claire Spencer's house no later than Wednesday, April 8. That is 1609 Twigs Court in Chapman Farm.

Register online at www.baltimorebsa.org. In the left margin, click on "Camping" and then on "Day Camp". Note that every camper must have an adult volunteer (parent, aunt or uncle, etc.) for at least one day.

After April 8, late registration will be available only as space is available, for an extra late fee. In addition, there is no guarantee that a late registering camper will be placed with his den or Pack. So get those forms in now and join the out-of-this world fun!

Also, dates have been set for Camp Tomahawk training. Each Scout in our Pack should have received Scouting Food grocery bags as well as an information sheet with 3 easy steps for your Scout to participate in this important event that assists those less fortunate in Anne Arundel County. With today's economic climate the need is greater than it has been in many years, and this is a fun and easy way for our Scouts to "Give Goodwill".

Please note that Step 1 begins today.

Please contact either Lisa Hogan (410-721-5939, pat.hogan5@verizon.net) or Stacey Underwood (410-721-2736, staceyunderwood@verizon.net) with any questions.

Roger Hansen
Cubmaster Pack 731

SCOUTING FOR FOOD

PACK 731- Saturday March 7, 2009

The first Core Value of Cub Scouting is Citizenship and the annual "Scouting For Food" (SFF) day is an easy and fun way for the scouts to help and contribute to our community. This year the Scouting for Food day is on Saturday, March 7. We are encouraging each Cub Scout to collect canned and other nonperishable food from neighbors, family and friends and deliver the food to the local food bank. This is an important food drive to support the food bank, which provides food to needy families across southern Anne Arundel County families who depend on the generosity of their neighbors during tough times. There are three easy steps:

Step 1. Contact neighbors, family, and friends

During the first week of March, notify (stop by, leave a note, call or e-mail) your neighbors, friends and family about the Scouting For Food program and explain that you will be collecting food on Saturday, March 7 between 9 and 12 for the A.A. Co. food bank. It is helpful to give them advance notice so that they have time to accumulate their donations.

Here is a sample message:
Hello! My name is __________________________________. I am a Cub Scout with Pack 731, and we are collecting food for the County Food Bank. All of the canned and nonperishable food we collect will be given to hungry families in southern Anne Arundel County. Collection day is the morning of Saturday, March 7. You can leave the food on your doorstep if you do not plan on being home. Thank you for helping!

Step 2. Collect the food

On the morning of March 7, go around the neighborhood and to your family and friends and collect the bags of food (you can collect the canned goods anytime during the first week of March if you are not available Saturday morning). Wear your Scout uniform and take a wagon to help carry the food. Each Scout has been given a supply of SFF bags, but any bags or boxes can be used.

Step 3. Deliver the food

Once you have collected all of the food, it needs to get to the food bank. There are 3 ways to do this.

Method 1: Drop the food off at a Pack drop-off point no later than 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.
- 1623 Ardsley Place, Lisa Hogan, 410-721-5939
- 1812 Hillburne Way, Stacey Underwood, 410-721-2736

Method 2: Deliver it directly to the County Food Bank in Crownsville on March 7, from 9am to 3pm. It's only a 15-minute drive to the food bank at the old Crownsville Hospital site, across from the county fairground. There should be a sign directing you to their building (directions: Crownsville Road to Marbury Road, through the stop signs, to the large building on the right, pull up to the loading dock).

Method 3: If you collect the food after March 7, you can drop the collected food at the Crofton public library at any time.

Participating Scouts will each receive a Scouting For Food badge and a "Do Your Best" t-shirt. There will be sign in sheets at both of the Pack drop-offs. If you drop off your donations using Method 2 or 3 - please let your den leader know so that we can ensure you receive your badge and shirt.

Thank you for helping those in need!!

Online registration for Camp Tomahawk 2009 is up and running!

Camp Tomahawk is open to all registered Cub Scouts who are currently Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos Is. This is a fantastic day camp during the week of July 13 through 17. The boys fish, shoot BBs, learn Scout skills, play outdoor games, do archery, and have all kinds of other fun. It's held every year at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Crownsville, Maryland. Your boy will make memories that last a lifetime, and he'll earn a lot next rank badge requirements, too.

Every camper must have an adult volunteer for at least one day. Camp Tomahawk wouldn't be possible without hundreds of parents pitching in. There are lots of opportunities: leaders and adult helpers for the dens, station leaders and staff, set-up on Saturday/Sunday before camp, and tear-down on Friday night and Saturday after camp.

There's also a Tagalong program for younger potty-trained siblings while a parent is working in camp. For sisters aged 7-11, the Tag "big girl program" acts like a den, and the girls rotate through the fun Scout activities.

DEADLINES AND PRICING

Pricing is based on when you register and how involved the adult volunteer is. Boys with an all-week volunteer get a discount. People who register early get a discount, too.

Early Registration - to Claire Spencer no later than 3/9/09:

$100 per camper with an all-week adult volunteer plus $10 in "Hawk Bucks" (good at the camp store)

$125 per camper with a 1-4 day adult volunteer

Regular Registration - to Claire Spencer no later than 4/6/09:

$125 per camper with an all-week adult volunteer plus $10 in ?Hawk Bucks?

$160 per camper with a 1-4 day adult volunteer

Late registration - to Claire Spencer after 4/6/09:

 $200 with a 1-5 day adult volunteer

Tagalongs - potty-trained siblings:

one tag FREE with an all-week adult volunteer

$25 per day (max $100) with a 1-4 day adult volunteer

Tagalongs - sisters aged 7-11:

$100 with an all-week adult volunteer

$30 per day (max $100) with a 1-4 day adult volunteer

REGISTRATION

Most of the process is online this year. You can even pay online this year. Note, however, that you will still need to print the registration form, complete the Medical Release form, attach a picture, and in some cases attach supporting documentation.

The process is pretty self-explanatory. Below are complete instructions in case you want assistance.

Go to the Baltimore Area Council website, at http://www.baltimorebsa.org

On the left margin, click on "Camping" and then on "Day Camp"

On the page of "Cub Scout Day Camps," click on "Camp Tomahawk"

Click on the "Register" button at the bottom

Follow all the steps to register everyone. You can do everyone at the same time: your Scout as camper, yourself as volunteer, younger siblings as Tags, and older Scouts as aides. (If you are doing early registration - forms to Claire Spencer by 3/9/09 - note that the prices quoted for campers does not include the $25 discount for early registration, but the discount is applied during payment).

Complete the "Step 1" page. We are Pack 731.

Complete the "Step 2" page for each person you are registering. Make sure the shirt sizes are correct since there will be no changes from what is in the registration form.

Download the Medical Release Form, because you will have to complete a hardcopy for each camper/volunteer/tag/aide.

On the payment page, you have many choices. Note that a credit card will incur a convenience fee of several dollars. If you want to pay with cash or a check, click the "Mail/Offline" button and attach the payment to your forms when you give them to our camp registrar. Do NOT mail to the Baltimore address it says.

Print out the registration form.

Click "Done" to return to the Baltimore BSA website.

Make a packet to turn into our Pack registrar:

The printed Registration form.

Parts A and C of the Medical Release Form for each camper/volunteer/tag/aide. Complete and sign it. Attach a photo.

If you indicated that you have CPR certification, attach a copy of that certification for their records.

Youth volunteers also need a recommendation from their Cubmasters or Scoutmasters in order to participate.

Attach payment if paying by check or cash.

Make sure all forms are completed and signed. Incomplete forms will not be accepted!

Bring the packet to Claire Spencer's house:

1609 Twigs Court in Chapman Farm

Put it in the bin on her front porch.

QUESTIONS

If you have questions about registration, contact our Pack's Tomahawk registrar:
Claire Spencer, 410-721-3228 or clairespencer@verizon.net.

If you have questions about Camp Tomahawk in general, contact one of the Pack leaders. Many of our Scouts earned significant achievements and the drums sure had our kids moving and jumping! Once again, a big thank you to Tammy Taschenberger, Natalie Gutzler, and the many other Wolf Parents and Scouts that made this event so successful.

However, there was one item that our District Executive Alex Hutton had planned to discuss with the Pack during the Blue and Gold Banquet, but was unable to do so since the project he has been working on is not finalized.

As you know our Pack with nearly 130 Scouts is by far the largest Pack in The Capitol District and among the largest in the state. On the one hand our size is a credit to the great program that our many dedicated adult volunteer leaders provide for our boys. However, our size can be a challenge to manage particularly during our most popular events such as the Pack Picnic, Blue and Gold Banquet, Pinewood Derby, and Winter Camping.

That being the case, Alex Hutton and others with our District have been in discussions with Principal Strohecker (Nantucket Elementary School) as well as several potential charter organizations in the greater Crofton Area, with the goal of starting a new Cub Scout Pack at Nantucket. Prince of Peace Church is Pack 731's charter organization, and a charter organization is required before the possible new Pack can be established at Nantucket.

As you know, we have Scouts from at least six different elementary schools in Pack 731 today. If a new Pack is established at Nantucket, we will not require any Scout in our Pack to join the new Pack regardless of where the Scout attends school. However, if a new Pack is established at Nantucket, any Scout in our Pack that chooses to transfer to the new Pack at Nantucket will be able to do so.

If a new Pack is established at Nantucket, Pack 731 will "Do Our Best" to help the new Pack become successful.

The bottom line is that Scouting is a fantastic program and we want Scouting to be a great experience for your son regardless of what Pack is the best choice for your family.

Alex Hutton plans to speak with the Pack regarding the possibility of a new Pack at Nantucket Elementary during our Winter Camping Campfire on Saturday 03/14/09 and during our April Pack Powwow on Friday 04/17/09.

Please advise if you have any questions or concerns.

Roger Hansen, Cubmaster (410-721-5655 or Cubmaster@croftonpack731.org)
Brian Taschenberger, Asst. Therefore, as was stated in the initial registration letter, since there is enough cabin space to accommodate the Tigers, the planned Tiger Day event is canceled and all registered scouts (including Tigers) will participate in the Pack 731 Winter Camping Trip.

Since there may be some Tigers who did not register because they did not want to participate in the Tiger Day Event, the Winter Camping Committee is holding a second registration for Tigers.

If you have a Tiger who has not registered for Winter Camping, please complete the attached registration form with a check and bring it to Marcia Buehner no later than Pack 731's Blue and Gold Dinner on Saturday, February 21st, 2009. You may also contact Marcia (mtbuehner@msn.com) to make alternate arrangements.

For the Tigers who have already registered, please complete the revised registration form (without a check) for Boy Scouts of America insurance purposes since this registration form reflects the correct departure and return dates. This form was emailed to all Tiger families; it is also available in Word format from Roger Hansen (Cubmaster@croftonpack731.org) or in PDF format from Molly Weems (CommitteeChair@croftonpack731.org). It would be helpful if you can also bring the completed forms to Marcia Buehner no later than Pack 731's Blue and Gold Dinner on Saturday, February 21st, 2009.

Winter Camping is one of the most fun events on Pack 731's calendar and we are very pleased that the Tigers will be able to fully participate as they have in past years.

On March 13-15, Pack 731 returns to Camp Saffran, one of the camps at the Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation, approximately an hour and a half north of Crofton in Harford County.

There’s a great lineup of activities, including archery, rockets, Scout skills, and a campfire with skits. Wolves, Bears, and Webelos will stay in rustic cabins from Friday night to Sunday morning. Tigers will participate in all Saturday activities via bus.

Electronic versions of the registration form are available from our website at www.croftonpack731.org or from www.docstoc.com/docs/document-preview.aspx?doc_id=3509028. Hardopies are available from Molly Weems at committeechair@croftonpack731.org. Each boy must have an accompanying parent (exception: one parent can accompany two brothers). Cost is $25 per person, with checks payable to "Pack 731." A portion of this money will be returned to the dens to purchase food. After all registration forms have been turned in, buses and cabins will be assigned.

Winter Camping is a special event that the whole Pack looks forward to every year. The Pinewood Derby week is here. Register the car on Wednesday or Thursday, and then race on Saturday.

All Pinewood Derby cars competing in the race must be registered in advance of the race. Registration will be hosted by Pat Hogan at 1623 Ardsley Place (directions below) on Wednesday, January 7, and Thursday, January 8, between 7:00pm and 8:30pm. You need only attend one session and it should only take a few minutes to weigh and measure your car.

If there are any problems with your scout's car not meeting the specifications, you will need to make the necessary modifications to bring it into compliance before it will be registered. You may take it back to your home and return when you have made the changes. Once a car has been weighed, measured, and found to be in compliance with the specifications, race officials will keep it so no further modifications to the car are made prior to the race. No modifications to the cars will be allowed on Race Day and race officials will be responsible for approving and supervising any car repairs needed between races.

The Derby committee needs boxes to help transport the cars - Staples paper boxes work well. If you have any, please bring them with you to weigh-in.

Directions to the Derby Registration from Crofton Elementary:
Turn right onto Crofton Parkway
Go approximately 1/2 mile, then turn left onto Ardsley Place
Ardsley is a T, so take another left
Second house on left - #1623

The official Pack 731 Pinewood Derby is Saturday, January 10! All races are in the cafeteria at Crofton Elementary, where we have our monthly Pack meetings. Here is the schedule:
Webelos II - 9:00 am
Webelos I - 10:00 am
Bears - 11:00 am
Wolves - 12:30 pm
Tigers - 1:30 pm
Top 3 finishers from each rank race for the pack championship - 2:30 pm

Wear your uniform and bring your best cheering voice.

Thanks - and we are looking forward to a great Race Day! While you're enjoying your holiday from school, remember that this is a great time to get your creative juices going so you can design and build your Pinewood Derby car. The races are Saturday, January 10, and that's less than two weeks away.
All cars must be registered, weighed, and turned in before the Derby. There are two nights to do this: Wednesday or Thursday, January 7 or 8. Come either night between 7pm and 8:30pm, to the Hogans' house (1623 Ardsley Place, off Crofton Parkway). Make sure that all paint and other decor is firmly attached and completely dry. The race officials will then transport your car to the Derby on Saturday.

The Pinewood Derby is on Saturday, January 10, in the cafeteria at Crofton Elementary. Heats go by rank:
9am - Webelos II
10am - Webelos I
11am - Bears
12:30pm - Wolves
1:30pm - Tigers
2:30pm - Pack Championship races (top three finishers from each age)
Wear your blue Scout uniform or yellow "Do Your Best" t-shirt.

The three fastest cars from each group will receive medals and will compete in the Pack Championship race. In addition, a panel of judges will review the entered vehicles, and design awards will go out in each rank.

Complete rules are in the winter Pack newsletter. The newsletter was mailed to your house or can be downloaded at http://www.croftonpack731.org/upload/WinterNewsletter2008.pdf.

Parents: we still need a few volunteers to help clean up after the Derby, starting at 3pm. If you can work for an hour or two after the event, please contact Dave Underwood at theunderwoods@verizon.net.
Our Pinewood Derby committee is busy planning a fantastic race day for you, so Do Your Best on your cars. Participating Scouts earn a yellow Class B "Do Your Best" t-shirt.

This service project is especially for Wolves and Webelos plus their families, but all ranks are welcome.

Also, boys can learn to conduct an outdoor flag ceremony at the school flag-pole. In just one session, Wolves can fulfill Achievement #2efg, Bears can do Achievement #3hi, and Webelos can practice part of requirement #3 for the Citizen activity badge. Just meet Molly Weems at the school's flagpole at 9am or 10am.

(Note to boys who attend Crofton Elementary: this service project coincides with the PTA's Holly Jolly Workshop. If you plan to spend some time raking leaves and some time at the Workshop, be sure to RSVP to pat.hogan5@verizon.net by Tuesday.)

See you on Saturday!
