Save RAM - Minimize!!!!

Most of us work on windows and more often than not we have mutiple windows open. And whenever we have to access something from desktop or from computer we use a well know shortcut CTRL + D or desktop icon in the task bar to minimize the windows that we have opened and then again we maximize one of the windows and start working.
In this article I am going to tell you a fact that can help you to increase your available RAM without any software i.e just by following a best practice given below

Whenever you are going to work on other window MINIMIZE that window instead of using the desktop icon or the CTRL + D shortcut. To just feel the difference follow the steps given below

Open Microsoft word or any other software
Press CTRL + D (Your window will be minimized)
Open Task Manager (the way to open will depend on OS you are using)

In Windows XP right click on the taskbar and choose Task Manager

Choose the Application that you have opened from the taskbar window
Right Click and choose Goto Process
Note down the memory it is using
Now Maximize that window and again minimize it using the minimize icon of window
Now Again follow the steps 3-6 You will see that it is using way less RAM than it was using when you use the shortcut.

Reason for this behavior is that when you click Minimize button windows assume that you are not going to work on this window and it takes its content out of memory and into page file. Hence you RAM consumption is reduced.

This small force of brave men along with some Greek allies blocked the Thermopylae Pass which was the only road that King Xerxes could travel to get to the major Greek cities. How To Call Workflow Asynchrounously?

We all want the response time of our Application to be as fast as it can and we do everything that we can to achieve that. I am going to tell you about a way which can help you to reduce the response time without actually reducing any functionality. Siebel can execute workflows in two ways.

Synchronous
Asynchronous

Synchronous Execution : When workflows are executed Synchronously then user gets the control back only when the workflow has finished it execution.

Asynchronous Execution: When workflows are executed Asynchronously then user gets back the control immediately and the workflow is submitted to workflow process manager (WPM) as a job to be executed. WPM then executes the job later.

Often we have a functionality where large amount of processing needs to be done on an object which user is not going to use access right now. I can explain it with an example.

When user clicks copy button on a opportunity or quote we want certain custom entities to be copied over but which user will not access at that time but later.

So, we can reduce our response time by just copying the quote or opportunity synchronously and placing the code of copying of custom entities in workflow and executing that workflow asynchronously.

There are two way to execute a workflow asynchronously

Workflow Policy
Runtime Event and Business Service (BS) Combination

Workflow Policy is pretty traditional method of executing a workflow process.
You create a policy. Enter the conditions Specify the workflow to be executed Generate Triggers
I wouldn't go into details of creating a policy but I will tell you some disadvantages of using Workflow Policy

Slow Execution
Difficult to setup
Not Reliable and Error Prone

But from siebel 7.7 onwards we have another more robust, efficient and quicker way to do that which is Runtime Events and Business Service.

How To Call Workflow Asynchronoulsy?

In this article I will tell you about the actual process of Setting up Runtime Event and Business Service assuming you have working knowledge of both. If you want to know the basics of these please see other posts of my blog.

Just one important thing that you should know about runtime evetns is that they are executed even before the Business Component Events.

To explain it better I am taking an example where our requirement is to execute a workflow when you click Submit Oppty button on Opportunity Form Applet.

Goto Administration ==>Runtime Events Screen
Goto Action Sets View
Create a New Record in the Action Set View of Runtime Events Administration Screen
Enter Any Name in the Name Field of the Action Set List Applet
Create New Record List Applet Below it
Enter

Name = "TestRuntimeEvent" ;
Action Type = "Business Service" ;
Sequence = "1"

In the Form Applet Below Enter the Following Details Business Service = "TestBS" ; Business Service Method = "TestMethod"8. Click Menu ==> Reload Runtime Events Make Sure that you have Active Flag checked in both List Applets.

You are done in Action Set View.

Now Goto Events view and Follow the steps given below

Click New and Enter the Following Information

Sequence = 1 ;
Object Type = "Applet" ;
Object Name = "Opportnity Form Applet" ;
Event = "InvokeMethod" ;
Sub Event = "Submit Oppty" ;
Action Set = "TestRunTimeEvent"

Conditional Expression should be given if you want the restrict the execution of this Runtime Event to certain conditions and Action Set Name is always the name of the action set that we created.

2. Click Menu ==> Reload Runtime Events.

* Everytime you make a change to runtime events you have to Reload them to activate the changes that you have made.

Now we are through the Runtime Event parts.

What we have done so far is that When user clicks Submit Oppty button it is going to call BS named TestBS with method as "TestMethod".

Now we are going to write the code in the busines service which will actually result in the execution of Workflow Process Asynchronously.

Go To Administration ==> Business Service
Create a Business Record with name "TestBS"
Create a Record in List Applet for Service_PreInvokeMethod and choose Programming Langauge as "eScript"

Write the Following code in Code Window inside the function Service_PreInvokeMethod

Gaming Still Better in XP than in Windows Vista.

I had thought that if I threw enough hardware at Windows Vista that I would get similar gaming performance to that of Windows XP - I was wrong.

Windows Vista went RTM back in November of last year and it was released to the public at the end of January and things have improved considerably over the intervening months. More Vista compatible hardware has been released and many companies have been continually releasing updated drivers in an attempt to squeeze as much power from the new OS as possible. However, testing seems to suggest that Vista has a long way to go to before it can match XP.
Over at the PC Doc HQ we’ve been carrying out some testing on the quad-core systems that we built a little while ago (parts list here). The testing that we carried out was relatively simple but proved (to us at any rate) that XP is still much better when it comes to gaming that Vista.
Here’s the testing process we used:

Install the OS (whether XP or Vista)
Make sure that updated drivers are applied (especially the graphics card driver - we’re using ATI’s Catalyst 7.9 drivers for both XP and Vista)
Apply all OS patches and updates (and on Vista we switched off Windows Gadgets)
Turned the Indexing service off
Install FRAPS 2.9.1 (which will be used to measure game frame rate)
Install The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, including the Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isle updates and then applied the latest patches to bring everything up to date
Defragged the system
Set the scenery detail of the game to ultra high and the screen resolution to 1024 x 768
Enlist the help of my kids (who know Oblivion cheats and how to get around the Oblivion world much better than I do!)
Play a few sections of the game and see what the performance is like

It’s always important to follow, to the letter, the testing procedure that you’ve laid out at the beginning otherwise you screw up and waste time. This is what we (or, more specifically, I) did. The initial set of tests that we carried out had to be thrown out because we had missed out the step of installing all the patches for Oblivion and this resulted in the game running with different level of scenery detail under XP compared to Vista (which resulted in the game under Vista feeling a lot smoother and better).

with the initial test results binned and checklist in hand, we embarked on a second set of tests, this time making sure that the game is properly patched and up to date.
What surprised us is that the overall performance of Oblivion (which is a very demanding game in terms of the hardware requirements) was very good under both XP and Vista. Game loading times were fast, the game played smoothing, transitioning between scenes was fast and smooth and saving and loading saved games was fast. I’d rate gameplay experience overall as excellent with smooth graphics and little in the way of lagging or delays. Given the free time I could happily pull off a long gaming session on either OS.

However …
Having been playing Oblivion for a very long time on a variety of systems and we know what parts of the game hammer the system. Specifically (and this will only make sense to you if you’ve played Oblivion) fighting around an Oblivion gate or running and fighting on complex terrains such as grass can put a strain on the system and decrease frame rate.
When under little load, both OS could easily manage 60 fps, but this frame rate varied depending on where we were in the game and what we were doing. This is both normal and to be expected. What we were looking for was evidence that one OS was better than the other, and we saw this. Under Vista we saw the frame rate drop more dramatically than under XP (the lowest frame rate we got while playing on XP was 34 fps while under Vista it dropped as far down as 25 fps), we also saw the frame rate stay at a lower level for longer. At the time when the frame rate dropped, the game felt a little more choppy under Vista, but the game was still totally playable.

Conclusion: If you’re a hardcore gamer and you want the maximum frame rate possible, you need to stick with XP for now, no matter how much hardware you throw at it.

How to Install a Hard Drive in your computer?

Do you own a computer that is more than a year old? If so, then you may be running out of disk space. In the same way that closets and attics have a way of filling up and overflowing, so do hard drives. Maybe your 8-megapixel camera needs a gigabyte of disk space every time you unload the camera's memory card. Or your MP3 collection grows by 10 songs every day. Perhaps you are trying to edit videos of the kids, and every 5 minutes of tape consumes a gigabyte of disk space. Or maybe you would like to add a TV tuner card to your machine and turn your computer into a DVR.

Digital cameras, video cameras, MP3 players and TV tuner cards all consume lots of disk space. If you use any of these gadgets, chances are that you need more space. In this article, we will show you how easy it is to add a new hard drive to your existing machine.

Before we start the process of adding a drive, we need to do a small amount of research inside your machine. The goal of the research is to find out if it will be easy or not so easy to add the new hard drive. We also need to find out what kind of drive you need to buy. You may be able to do this research by reading through your computer's manuals, but it is far easier to simply open the case and look inside.

The first question to answer is: How many hard disk drives have already been installed inside the case? In the majority of machines, the answer to this question is "one."

Having only one hard disk drive installed makes it easy to install another one. After you open up your computer's case and look inside, you will probably find one optical drive (a CD or DVD drive), a single hard disk drive and perhaps a floppy disk drive. The optical and floppy drives will be easy to find because you can see them on the outside of the case. The hard drive may take a little searching. If you have no idea what a hard drive looks like, look at the photo above.
If there are already two drives installed inside your case, then adding a new one is more difficult.

Is there space available to add another hard-disk drive? Your current hard disk is probably mounted in a small metal cage or rack inside the machine. Make sure there is space available in the cage for another drive. If not, look at the section on adding an external drive.

Find out what type of cable system is used to connect drives to the motherboard. There are two systems in common use: IDE drives (also known as PATA, or Parallel ATA), and SATA (Serial ATA) drives. PATA drives have wide, flat cables or thick cables as wide as your finger, while SATA drives have thin cables about the diameter of a pencil. You will need to know whether to buy an IDE or SATA drive, and you should be able to tell by looking at the cables.

An IDE, or PATA hard drive, uses a wide, flat or thick cable to connect to the computer's motherboard.

Web Services - Introduction Part - 1

This is an age of Digitization and Communication. We want to make every aspect our life as easy as we can.We are trying to digitize every business process that we know such as marketing, sales. Internet is playing a pivotal role in making world a global village. We can reach anyone, anytime, anywhere. It is blurring the physical boundaries and eliminating the time differences.

Now we are ready to embrace the next generation Internet. Which is not only going to connect
computer but anything that can handle digital data. Already in Phase 1 was have mobile phones, pda, black berry's considerable changing our business models and the way we conduct our business. Now our office is a room with desk in it, it has expanded and can be a city, state or a country. And as we progress in this directions it will not be just mobile phones and computers we will have every equipment that will be able to connect and operated through Internet.

But how are we making this happen? How is that possible that such distinct equipments are able to connect and communicate? As we know that for anything to communicate there has to be something common between them. Now that common thing between all these things is a Web Service. Which is nothing but a language based on XML and SOAP which provides basis for these equipments to communication with each other. Future applications are going to be web enabled and based on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). To explain it in layman terms we can say that anybody who would want to use these application will have some services on his disposal, which he can use to get his work done. Before we can understand what a web service is we have to understand three things.

XML : Xtensible Markup Language
SOAP : Service Object Access Protocol
WSDL : Web Service Description Language

XML : In simple language Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple, very flexible text format derived from SGML (ISO 8879). Originally designed to meet the challenges of large-scale electronic publishing, XML is also playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web and elsewhere.

SOAP :SOAP originally stood for Simple Object Access Protocol, and lately also Service Oriented Architecture Protocol, but is now simply SOAP. SOAP makes use of an Internet application layer protocol as a transport protocol. SOAP is nothing but a wrapper around XML data. It describes the data it is carrying. That is how diverse application can understand the what is being sent to them without knowing who sent them. Of course there are other methods also to connect to diverse applications such as CORBA, GIOP, ICE, and DCOM

WSDL: It is again nothing but XML structure defining or rather describing the service the application is providing. It describes what kind of data it can accept. What kind of function it can perform and what kind of output it is going to return. In more technical terms it can be described as an XML format that allows service interfaces to be described along with the details of their bindings
to specific protocols. Typically used to generate server and client code, and for configuration.Which any application that has capability of understanding XML can use.

A Web Service is nothing but usage of above said technologies in combination to exchange data
between heterogeneous application.

Dhoom 2 - First Look

Dhoom 2 is definitely destined to be yet another hit of this lucky year 2006. The one aspect of this movie that straight away reaches out and grabs you by the throat is the glamour and slickness of the product (no surprise as nearly 45Cr was spent).

Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Uday Chopra

The film begins with Hrithik and a train robbery in Nambia, wherein Hrithik in the guise of the highness robs the crown, after which there is a fight scene between him and the guard on the top the train. After the robbery Hrithik leaves his signature ‘A’ on the robbery scene.Bips(ACP) is send to join up with Abhi and Uday to catch the international robber who after every robbery leaves behind the alphabhet A.
In this way there are four robberies three of them before the interval and one after the interval. For every robbery Hrithik dons a disguise and after robbing also there are disguises used by him while getting away. During one such robbery he meets Ash and they both rob together but Ash is napped by Abi and Bips where hrithik saves her. Later she convinces HR to make her his partner which he does and falls in love with her.
Ash is actually working for Abhi as she was gonna be jailed and Abhi told her to help him nap A then she wont be jailed. HR and Ash are planning a big robbery which Ash tell abhi about and she was to signal him after the end but HR sees her with Abhi.
Then at gunpoint he makes Ash admit that she is with the cops which she admits to.
After the last robbery there is a motobike chase after which HR is caught by Abhi and to be arrested but HR pleads with Ash to shoot him as he would rather die by her hand than be captured or killed by Abhi.

Ash shoots HR and he falls off the cliff. Does he die?

Visual Basic... First Look

I want this article to act as an introduction to VB for a newbie the one who is just entering the world of programming. I think VB is most intresting and most easy programming language to learn and the kind of things you can do with it is just amazing.

Just as an example when I was preparing for my MCA exam. I had to prepare One Words for my entrance exam and I spent days learning 100's of one words and then a shock out of blue hit me when I realized that I know all the answers but when I was writting them down I couldn't spell most of them right. So, I had to find a way to learn the spellings and that's where VB came to my aid. I developed a utility in no time which would read the one word's from a file and If I gave correct spelling it gave me 10 points and a wrong answer would deduct 5. It was fun and I used to practice with it 2 times a day which meant that by the time I faced my exam I had perfected the spellings of all the One Words.So, This should help you understand how VB can help you.

VB is written with the help of and IDE known as Microsoft visual studio. It is an interpreted and as well as compiled language. Simply defined VB is an event driven, Object oriented language. Now, I will explain these terms further.

Event Driven: Everything that happens in VB can be defined as an event. Few examples would be Click of a Button, Moving mouse over an Object, Entering text in text box, closing the application, Opening the application.

Object Oriented: Everything in VB is defined as Objects. Few examples are Button, TextBox, Form, Label. Every Object has some methods and some properties associated with it and we just have to manipulate those properties and methods using the language.

Once we understand these few basic things completely then the only thing that remains is get accustomed to VB IDE and learning the syntax. To help you with that I am providing the link to certain websites that contain good examples and sample codes for basic VB Programs.

How hard is it to set up a network between two computers in my home?

If you have multiple computers in your home, networking them is a great idea! There are several big advantages to setting up an in-home network:

If one of the computers has a printer attached, then the other computer can print to it over the network.
If one of the computers has certain files on it, someone on the other computer can access those files over the network rather than having to copy them onto a floppy disk.
If you like playing multi-user computer games that have network capabilities built in, then two people can play these games together over the network.
If you connect to the Internet with one of the computers, the other computer can use that same connection over the network. So one computer can connect to the Internet with a modem and the other computer will route its Internet traffic through that single connection.

Networking PCs has gotten easier and a lot less expensive, but it is still a little bit of a challenge. How Home Networking Works discusses the whole thing in detail, but here's a quick answer.

One way to do it is to buy and install network cards in both machines. You can go to an electronics store and get an inexpensive network card for $20 to $30 these days. You have to open the computer to plug the card in, and then install the driver software. You also have to purchase two network cables ($10
to $20 each) and a small hub ($30 to $40) to physically connect the two machines together. Once you get it all together, the two machines should be able to talk to each other.

This approach has two advantages:

The network will be very fast -- up to 100 Mbps, and at least 10 Mbps. It only costs about $100.

It has two disadvantages:

You have to open the case and install a card, which intimidates some people.
You have to run thick network cables around the house. If the computers are in the same room that's okay, but if they are on different floors it can be messy.

You can solve that second disadvantage by purchasing radio modems instead. They cost more but are very easy to connect to one another.

Another path you can follow is something like the Intel AnyPoint Network. Instead of using special network cables, you use your home's telephone wiring to connect computers together (this causes no interference when using the phone for normal calls -- your phone and the network share the same wire). In addition, you can buy a version of the Intel system that uses a USB port, so installation is extremely easy. You can also purchase cards, which are faster.

The big advantage of the Intel system is the use of phone wiring. Simply plug all the computers in your
house into phone jacks and they can talk to each other. You also don't need to buy a hub. The disadvantages include:

Higher prices (for the USB version)
Slower speeds (for the USB version)

However, installation takes just a few minutes.
Besides phone-line networking, you can also use power-line networking and wireless networking to connect your computers. Read How Home Networking Works to learn about the different approaches.

Once you install the physical network, the Windows operating system makes connecting your computers simple.
You can use the Network Neighborhood feature to share files and printers. The Intel system comes with software to share an Internet connection, or you can use the version built into Windows 98 and later.

Copy/Revise of Quote takes more than 3 minutes. Copy/Revise Implementation is not a vanilla implementation and there are 9 entities that are being copied along with Quote and Quote line item. Quote Line Item contains moderately complex products which can be customized. At any given point of time there are atleast 9 products and 100 attributes that are needed to be copied.

Current Solution:

Scripting to copy all the Entities, Quote and Quote Line Item

Current Problems:

Due to excsseive scripting there are various kind of scripting error being enconterd frequently. Due to complex scripting in place frequent break down of Copy/Revise Functionality.

Solution Recommended:

Use of Signals which have been introduced in the Siebel 7.8 Architechture.Signal provide you a hassel free way of using C++ data structure defined by Siebel. These data structure can be modified by users to include custom entities and fields that have been defined.

Results:

Copy/Revise is taking less than 10 seconds for copying of all the entities that is without a single line of code. The process is robust and stable and flexible enough to have more entities added to it without additional overhead.

Does adding more RAM to your computer make it faster?

Up to a point, adding RAM (random access memory) will normally cause your computer to feel faster on certain types of operations. RAM is important because of an operating system component called the virtual memory manager (VMM).

When you run a program such as a word processor or an Internet browser, the microprocessor in your computer pulls the executable file off the hard disk and loads it into RAM. In the case of a big program like Microsoft Word or Excel, the EXE consumes about 5 megabytes. The microprocessor also pulls in a number of shared DLLs (dynamic link libraries) -- shared pieces of code used by multiple applications. The DLLs might total 20 or 30 megabytes. Then the microprocessor loads in the data files you want to look at, which might total several megabytes if you are looking at several documents or browsing a page with a lot of graphics. So a normal application needs between 10 and 30 megabytes of RAM space to run. On my machine, at any given time I might have the following applications running:

A word processor
A spreadsheet
A DOS prompt
An e-mail program
A drawing program
Three or four browser windows
A fax program
A Telnet session

Besides all of those applications, the operating system itself is taking up a good bit of space. Those programs together might need 100 to 150 megabytes of RAM, but my computer only has 64 megabytes of RAM installed. The extra space is created by the virtual memory manager. The VMM looks at RAM and finds sections of RAM that are not currently needed. It puts these sections of RAM in a place called the swap file on the hard disk. For example, even though I have my e-mail program open, I haven't looked at e-mail in the last 45 minutes. So the VMM moves all of the bytes making up the e-mail program's EXE, DLLs and data out to the hard disk. That is called swapping out the program. The next time I click on the e-mail program, the VMM will swap in all of its bytes from the hard disk, and probably swap something else out in the process. Because the hard disk is slow relative to RAM, the act of swapping things in and out causes a noticeable delay.

If you have a very small amount of RAM (say, 16 megabytes), then the VMM is always swapping things in and out to get anything done. In that case, your computer feels like it is crawling. As you add more RAM, you get to a point where you only notice the swapping when you load a new program or change windows. If you were to put 256 megabytes of RAM in your computer, the VMM would have plenty of room and you would never see it swapping anything. That is as fast as things get. If you then added more RAM, it would have no effect.

Some applications (things like Photoshop, many compilers, most film editing and animation packages) need tons of RAM to do their job. If you run them on a machine with too little RAM, they swap constantly and run very slowly. You can get a huge speed boost by adding enough RAM to eliminate the swapping. Programs like these may run 10 to 50 times faster once they have enough RAM!

Best Practices For Siebel

Whenever there is a requirement to extend a column in a table it is suggested that instead of extending the Base Table we should extend the Extension table corresponding to it.
Whenever you extend the column in a table make sure you also extend the EIM table corresponding to it and also make a record in the Attribute Mapping.
Steps for it:

a) Go to the EIM Interface table object and identify the correct EIM table.

b) Extend the EIM Table.

c) In EIM Table Mapping object > Attribute Mapping Object > create a record for newly added column.

The customized buttons who have the Method Invoked Property as"EventMethod%" ie. prefixed with 'EventMethod' need not to be forcibly enable
by using 'PreCanInvoke" event scripting.
They are always enabled.
