Start your first needlepoint project with a cross stitch

CrossStitch4Free features many embroidery patterns using the simplest form of needlework, called cross stitch. Cross stitch is a basic form of needlework found in many types of tapestry work and can be done on most types of fabric. It’s so simple, that you can even teach a five-year old child how to do it. Even better is the fact that no matter how simple the cross stitching pattern you may be doing, it will still result in the most charming hand embroidery work you will ever do.

This article shows you exactly how cross stitching is done.

Before you start: basics of a cross stitch kit

Cross stitch means just that — you stitch the threads in a cross-like manner, going diagonally on a square and across the cloth you are using until you complete your embroidery pattern.

Therefore, at the very least, you will need:-

Linen: Preferably Aida cloth, which is a mesh-like, even-weave linen with squares as guide when you cross-stitch.
Thread: There are cross stitch threads specifically made for cross-stitching; use this type to make it easier for you to embroider, and it will also make your embroidery designs stand out.
Needle: Any needle will do, as long as your cross stitch threads can go through it.

Cross stitch patterns for beginners

The next step is to figure out what embroidery patterns you would like to work on. The obvious choice would be to select a simple one. By definition, a “simple” pattern would be a design that has few colours (five or less is ideal), with a stitch pattern that “jumps” as little as possible. Jumps on a cross stitch design means that you will have to skip a square or few on your cloth, therefore creating gaps in your design.

The Christmas Stocking cross stitch pattern should be a perfect project for you to start on. In our patterns, as well as other standard cross stitch kits out there, information such as the number of knits you need, as well as the number of thread colours that are used in the pattern, are typical information you will find in order for you to start.

Simple yet important cross stitch technique

A cross stitch by itself is formed of two lines of thread over each square. So basically, as long as you form an “X” over a square, you’re already on your way to finishing your first embroidery design.

If you’re picky, however, you will notice that just forming an “X” will not do, due to the fact that the diagonals formed on your cross stitches aren’t well-organized. You can see it when you get a close look at your hand embroidery result.

The recommended technique to cross stitch, therefore, is to thread in a one diagonal direction straight across the linen (for example, left to right) until the color of the pattern is complete. Your pattern will look like this: //////

Next, do a different diagonal direction along the same line you did, but the other way (right to left). Your stitch will look like this: \\\\\

The result? You will form a perfect, even stitch like this: XXXXX

Do the next line, and then the next, until you have completed your project.

Your completed cross stitch pattern: what’s next?

There are so many things you can do once you have completed your needlepoint. For small projects, you can neatly cut it and paste on a card to create a wonderfully personal greeting card. You can also frame it, or make it into a pillowcase, or small pouch. Your imagination is the limit.
