Miller, 22, has not played in a game since September of 2025 after dealing with a back injury since the starting of spring training. The Phillies did not have many updates on Miller early-on in the injury, although it was later labeled as discogenic pain and facet inflammation in the lumbar spine.

The infield prospect had a great year in 2025 across AA and AAA, hitting .264 with 111 hits and an .825 OPS across 432 ABs. This past winner, the Phillies had plans of potentially seeing Miller in the majors in the summer of 2026, due to the unknown plans with Alec Bohm before the season was underway. Ultimately, that ended up not happening due to the injury.

The Threshers only have six games remaining on their schedule, and I’d assume that Miller won’t play in every one. It’s not a lot of baseball, but it’s baseball, and that’s what the Phillies want to see from their top position prospect.

So damn funny. Lot of stuff to appreciate in here:

1) Two riders got off the bus to move the barricades. This has to be the best part. That means there must have been a conference of sorts on the bus beforehand about what to do about the obstacle in front of them. The driver and the passengers hatched this plan together. They brainstormed. They thought it through as a unit. Really enjoying the idea of that: 

DRIVER: I don’t think I can drive over those orange gates.

PASSENGER 1: Are you sure?

DRIVER: I’m not sure. I never said I’m sure. I just don’t think I can. I think my wheels are too small compared to the orange gates.

PASSENGER 2: What if we moved the orange gates?

DRIVER: They’re probably bolted into the ground. 

PASSENGER 2: We should at least check to see if they’re bolted down. Maybe they’re not. 

DRIVER: (sighs) It’s worth a shot. I don’t know any other routes. 

PASSENGER 1: You mentioned that, yeah. 

DRIVER: I only know how to go straight here. I only know this road. If we can’t go forward here then I’m going to have to leave this bus and go get a different job. 

PASSENGER 2: Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. I’m gonna try to move the orange gates.

DRIVER: I don’t think I can drive over them. They’re too tall.

2) When the two guys moved the barricades, they must’ve seen that the cement was wet. They were so close to the cement. They surely knew what it was. What else could it be? Wet cement is the only thing that looks like that. All gray and slick and shiny. And they thought it’d be fine. They thought the bus could go through that. They proceeded with the plan anyway. 

3) The driver somehow got his front tire through the wet cement. He must’ve felt incredible after that. Euphoric. For a few moments there, he outsmarted the barricades. What a rush that must’ve been. Until the back tire.

4) The back tire hitting the cement is so funny. The bus sinks so much. I didn’t expect it to sink that much. The whole bus is crooked. Also, from this angle, you can see there are a good amount of people on the bus. Imagine how pissed these people are:

5) Doubt they’re more pissed than the Termini Brothers owners, though. They finally get the giant pothole outside their store filled and a bus gets stuck in it before the cement dries. Some bad luck there. Imagine they didn’t even consider that a possibility:

You would think the low number reflects question marks about the new Eagles’ offense. Will Hurts run the ball more or less under Sean Mannion? Will he scramble and continue to make off-schedule plays with his feet? The Sportradar data says Hurts scrambled 40 times last season, 39 times in 2024, and 47 times in 2023. The number has dipped slightly since 2022, but not drastically, and it hasn’t pulled him below 400 rushing yards in a regular season. Note that Hurts played at least 15 games in each of the last five seasons.

This is pretty rough stuff. I can’t help but feel bad for Sanchez here. It’s not just that he’s in the midst of a civil suit. It’s not just that his broadcasting career and reputation took a big hit. Those things are bad, but it’s not even close to the worst of it. No, if I’m him, the biggest thing I’m thinking about here – the part that I simply wouldn’t be able to shake, maybe for the rest of my life –  is that I got my ass whooped by an elderly man. The old guy (allegedly) pepper-sprayed and stabbed him. Double-whammy there. 

Losing a fight feels bad. No one wants to get their ass whooped. But what makes being pepper-sprayed and stabbed way, way worse is looking up from the ground and seeing the fight winner staring down at you like this:

Then, on top of the humiliation of getting smacked around by a man born in 1956, you get charged with a few misdemeanors for starting the fight (allegedly). Imagine that. Imagine getting stabbed by a gentle grandfather and then being the one who gets in trouble. Brutal.

Prayers up for Sanchez. Will be interesting to see if he bounces back from this. I know I could not.

A surprise party to congratulate a guy on becoming a Philadelphia Eagle. On the practice squad, no less. What other NFL fan base is organizing something like this?

The backdrop, of course, is that Bernard is from Nigeria and only recently came over to the United States. He got his first football snaps in the preseason and is just learning how to play the game. It’s a huge adjustment for the guy in a lot of ways, so it’s nice for the Dolan’s people and the fans who showed up to throw some support behind a guy who is trying to figure out a new sport and a new country at the same time.

This just further proves what we already knew, that the default attitude towards professional Philadelphia athletes is unwavering support. You only get booed or criticized if you dog it and fail to put in the effort. Mike Scott was here for five seconds and had his own fan group. Trea Turner got a standing ovation during a slump. Uar Bernard just started playing football and gets a surprise party at Dolan’s. Bookmark stories like this one for future reference.

This is the perfect landing spot for Ben. Sacramento is a terrible, small market team that hasn’t won a playoff series in more than 20 years. There will be no eyeballs on that team. They THROTTLED the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway:

UMass 37, Rutgers 21.

The Knights gave up 397 yards on their home turf, 200 on the ground. Umass ran for 4.9 yards per carry and controlled the clock for 36:21. Rutgers turned the ball over four times and ran for 30 yards on 25 carries while largely playing from behind. They let quarterback William “Pop” Watson complete 19 of his 22 attempts for 197 yards and three scores. It was really bad. He looked like the second coming of Baker Mayfield out there.

This is Greg Schiano’s 7th year of his second Rutgers stint, and he is 33-42 overall with a 15-39 record in Big 10 play. They had a little bit of a thing going in 2023 and 2024 with Kyle Monongai and Athan Kaliakmanis, and had some good out of conference wins against Virginia Tech and Miami, but they’ve been largely uncompetitive against the top half of the Big 10 and haven’t looked like the Rutgers of Schiano’s first stint, which was ~20 years ago now. It’s clear that Raymell Rice and Kenny Britt are not walking through that door with Brian Leonard and Ramel Meekins in tow. They could use those guys.

Unfortunately this is another blow to our dream of having a decent college football program in the Northeastern United States. Rutgers isn’t a Philly school, but there are a decent bit of alumni in this region who also like Philly sports, and when the Knights were good back in the day, they did make some inroads in the New York City media market.

Now? They stink. Schiano probably won’t make it through the year. They have to play at Traitor U next week (Boston College) and then they get Southern Cal at home. Indiana, Penn State, and Michigan are on the schedule. It’s looking like a 2-3 win season for the Knights. There is not a lot of wood being chopped in New Jersey at the current moment. The only thing Rutgers is chopping is jack and shit, and jack left town.

Now this is interesting. This is good stuff. I’d like to throw my opinion into the ring here. First, though, I will list some of my own Northeast experience, which I feel qualifies me to speak on NE geography:

• I am from what I’d call the Greater Northeast General Area. I was born in Fox Chase and grew up in Trevose.
• Parents are from Burholme/Five Points. We were over there a lot seeing family and stuff.

• I lived in Rockledge for a while, too.

• My first job out of college was at Origlio Beverage out on Meetinghouse Road. I answered phones and punched in beer orders for bars on a computer during the night shift until I was fired for being bad at it. Lasted almost a year there, which I think is impressive.

• I’ve done a lot of NE driving in my day. 76 to the Boulevard from Manayunk for a long time for that Origlio job. Bad drive.

• Huntington Pike to Oxford Ave to Cottman and then all the way over to 95 — did that drive a ton when I was living in Rockledge and went out in Fishtown a lot in my mid-20s. Bad drive.

• Played a lot of hockey at the Flyers Skate Zone off the Boulevard in high school. Their club team was called the Blazers and they always played dirty as hell. Every player had a Caesar cut and fake diamond earrings. Them and the Grundy Senators in Bristol were pretty much identical kids, which tracks, I believe.

• I take the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge whenever I can because it is my favorite bridge in the city. Just a cool bridge. Old and rusty and has arches and gives you an underrated view of the skyline. Plus it’s a drawbridge, which is interesting.

Having said all that, I have never, ever considered Kensington/that general area a part of the Northeast. I never really thought of it as North Philly, either. It’s kind of weird considering it’s pretty much just one neighborhood, but in my mind, I’ve always visualized it as its whole own thing.

In short, this documentary is excellent. I really, truly enjoyed it. I think it’s a worthwhile watch for any Philadelphian, or really anyone who enjoys good stories with compelling characters and footage of vomit in slow motion. 

Without spoiling anything, I’ll rattle off some generic observations:

• The film itself looks professional as hell. I don’t know why, but I kind of expected this to be like a YouTube-looking documentary, with unofficial blurry footage and a bunch of those Ken Burns-style zoom-ins on photos because they didn’t have enough actual video of the events. But I was way off. Everything here looks great. 

• The amount of actual footage from Wing Bowls in this is astounding. I never went to one, but watching the film made me feel like I was really there, and without all the miserable parts of actually going. I didn’t have to wake up at 3 AM. Didn’t have to smell the mix of Miller Lite breath and Delilah’s dancers’ perfume. Didn’t have to be elbowed by a crowd of hammered guys trying to break up a fight. I just enjoyed it all from my couch, smiling and nodding and drinking coffee. That’s the way to do it. 

• The characters are the biggest thing the doc has going for it. The film interviews tons of previous Wing Bowl participants and winners, and just about every one of them is a fascinating person to hear talk. The documentary does a really good job of slow-rolling them, too. The former Eaters made me laugh at first, like they were Philly-made Wack Packers.“It’s insane how much this person cares about Wing Bowl,” type of thing. But by the third act, the filmmakers started filling in the characters’ backstories and ups and downs in their personal lives, which was really affecting. By the end, I found myself caring a lot about these guys and rooting for them and feeling grateful that they had a community like Wing Bowl to be a part of. That’s really good stuff. 

• The historical/anthropological study of Wing Bowl alone is worth the price of admission. I had no idea how this thing started, and seeing it grow from a random-ish, grassroots radio promotion into an iconic Philadelphia touchstone was really interesting.

• I’m pretty much WIP agnostic. I didn’t listen to it much growing up (my dad had Howard Stern going whenever we were in the car), I listened to a lot of 97.5 in high school because it was on FM first, and I don’t listen to WIP now because that sounds unpleasant — but this doc made me appreciate WIP for its place in Philadelphia cultural history. Whether you like their content or not, the impression they made on the city is undeniable. Those days are long gone, but the station’s peak was important stuff.

• Was cool to see Jason Kelce participating in Wing Bowl in 2014. Seeing the footage took me back to a time when Jason Kelce was the coolest, most beloved Philly athlete we had, before he wildly oversaturated the market with his weirdo brother and his brother’s wife and became pretty unbearable.

• The ending is genuinely moving! I won’t spoil it, but this event meant a lot to a lot of people. It shaped identities and friendships and lives. Was cool to see Wing Bowl through that lens.

• Again, I won’t spoil the ending, but Wing Bowl ended at the perfect time. 

• Having said that, we should bring it back. There’s a lot of talk in the documentary about Wing Bowl being politically incorrect for the current moment, which is probably true – but why can New Orleans have Mardi Gras every year? Wasn’t Wing Bowl just an unhinged Philly version of that? I get why a corporation like Audacy can’t be tied to something that insane, but I’m a little surprised there wasn’t a spinoff/variation of it that survived after WIP stopped doing it. There’s the one taking place in Vegas, but nothing in Philadelphia proper. Maybe now’s the time to get something similar going again. I won’t be in attendance, of course. But I look forward to watching the documentary footage from my couch someday.

Takeaway: Such a fun watch. Whether you’re like me and are a little too young to have understood/grasped what Wing Bowl was in its heyday, or if you remember it all well and want to revisit it, or if you just like good stories with good characters, I recommend watching it. 9.2 out of 10 wings.

LeBron James and Jaylen Brown have injected a necessary spark of life into a franchise that has failed to reach their postseason goal going on almost 10 years now. There’s legitimate buzz and hope in a way that has been missing for a few seasons. The Sixers will have the maximum number of nationally televised games allowed, they’ll be the opening segments of national shows, and should be viewed as the most legitimate contenders they’ve been across this entire era.

But this is not “star hunting” in the way that has blown up in the past. James and Brown join a foundation that will start this team several rungs up on the ladder across the NBA landscape. There has been plenty of conversation about Joel Embiid, and how the former MVP and two-time scoring champion will fit into this new star-studded roster. Tyrese Maxey took the All-NBA leap last season, and his game has ascended year in and year out across his six seasons in the league. However, not enough attention has been paid to the 21-year-old difference maker coming off an All-Rookie season last year. 

The Sixers selected V.J. Edgecombe with the third overall pick in the 2025 draft. Edgecombe was a terrific consolation prize of a disastrous season in which Embiid’s injury issues hit their peak, and the Paul George free agency addition blew up in the team’s face as his health issues proved prevalent the season before. The new duo combined to play just 60 total games, and the Sixers limped to a 24-58 record; their worst since the 10-win season in 2015-16 to earn a place in the draft lottery.

But not only does has the Baylor product established himself as a foundational part of the team’s future beyond the era of aging stars, he very well may be the perfect fifth starter on this star-studded team.

“I’m going out there to hoop,” Edgecombe said through tears just minutes following the Sixers officially selecting him on draft night. “Whatever they need me to do. I’m just going to impact the game. Be the best player I can be.”

Words are one thing, but Edgecombe walked the walk with his versatility in the ever-changing picture of the roster around him. There were games where the 21-year-old was asked to step up as a lead offensive engine while Embiid, George, and even Maxey dealt with ailments. He announced his presence with 34 points in his debut against the Boston Celtics, and eclipsed this total in two other matchups last year while scoring 20+ in 23 games. Edgecombe also was asked to play more of a defensive-minded role when the team was at full strength and willingly took on the challenge of guarding opposing teams’ best players while more than holding his own in this area:

While his role will remain a bit malleable as the Sixers feel out the best way to manage Embiid and James in the twilight of their careers, the willingness and ability to embrace the dirty work of role-player-like responsibilities is a rare trait. Edgecombe is an above-average rebounder for his size, has shown some encouraging flashes as a playmaker, and possesses eye-popping athleticism that ranks in the top percentile even amongst the world’s best athletes. There will be stretches where these skillsets are increasingly called upon this season with the stars ahead of him in the pecking order of note. 

Edgecombe shot 35.4% from beyond the three-point arc last season on 5.6 perimeter attempts per game. His efficiency slipped in the postseason, as he knocked down just 29.2% of his long-range attempts, while his volume increased to 6.5 long-range shots per game. With Embiid returning to the floor for the bulk of these playoff matchups, George playing the best basketball of his Sixers career, and Maxey with a deserving place at the top of the scouting report, the Celtics and Knicks elected to sag off of the rookie in an effort to prioritize the others. He shot just 26.1% from deep during the four-game sweep at the hands of the Knicks. This efficiency dip and its effects on the team were not lost on Edgecombe. 

“Coming into next year a team won’t ever leave me open,” he told reporters during his exit interview. “In the regular season I was shooting the ball pretty well. Playoffs come, it’s a different vibe. Intensity, fire, closeouts are a lot quicker…I’m gonna work. That’s all I’m gonna do, whatever I gotta do to get better.”

Given the other names on this new-look roster, Edgecombe will only benefit more from being left open. Across the regular season last year, he shot 38.7% on catch-and-shoot three-pointers and 42.9% on three-pointers when he was left wide open by the NBA’s tracking data. He strangely shot 23.7% on wide open three-pointers in the postseason, compared to 44.0% when he was just open, which is considered when a defender is within four to six feet.

There should be some shame they feel for squandering another fantastic start from Andrew Painter Wednesday, who hurled seven scoreless innings and allowed only two hits to go along with six strikeouts and no walks. A win would have secured a wild card tiebreaker over Arizona, which would have been nice to notch, especially when they already have the tiebreaker with the team the Dbacks are mostly fighting for that last wild card position, the San Diego Padres. Wednesday’s win has the Dbacks holding that spot over the Padres for the time being, with the Phillies comfortably up 5.5 games, with the Cubs up 4.5 games.

As annoying as games like Wednesday’s tend to be, I still can’t be super annoyed at a road trip that started 0-2 and ended 6-3. There were two bad losses early in Seattle, and they had some baseball angels looking over them in Anaheim, but the real test was in Phoenix. And the series opener on Monday had a feel that it was going to be another one of those heartbreaking late-inning losses.

But it wasn’t.

Then, on Tuesday, they put together one of their most solid wins of the season, defeating the D Backs 7-1. That win secured their first series win in Arizona since 2023 (3-1). Before that, the last time they won a series there was 2016, a 3-0 sweep.

Think about what the Phillies must be thinking. They’re eyeing the Braves for the division again. The Braves won Wednesday, so their lead is back up to four games, coincidentally enough. They probably don’t exactly view the Dbacks as huge rivals the way we as fans do. But I can’t imagine it not feeling good to go into that place on the end of a long road trip and take the first two games. If you’ve seen this team on a long road trip before, you definitely can tell when they’ve exhausted whatever energy they had and are just ready to come home.

That’s exactly what happened Wednesday. I have to give huge credit to Painter for his dazzling performance on the mound, but it’s almost poetry the way Jonathan Bowlan gave up a homer to the first batter he saw in the eighth inning. I wasn’t even mad. I might have even smirked. But this team has shown us a reason to buy back in as the playoffs approach. And it’s not just because they finally won a series in the “House of Horrors” again. The Dbacks are a good team. They have more wins than the feel-good White Sox. They would be leading the AL West.

Bryce Harper is locked in, even with Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Luis Arraez struggling mightily right now. They’re getting clutch hits from role players that they didn’t in previous seasons. People are worried that they’re “peaking too early,” but without this 22-8 run since August 1st, they’d probably be on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.

I’ll take this 10 times out of 10.

The schedule will get tougher this month. They have to continue to hit and pitch to make the postseason. But that series in Arizona confirmed to me what prior series showed me. The Pirates’ series in May. The Nationals’ series in June. The Twins’ series last month. Hell, even Sosa’s grand slam in Anaheim. These are moments that we haven’t seen in years. Granted, the last two years they had the division in pretty comfortable hands so there wasn’t exactly a need for many of those incredible moments. But we’ve gotten a lot this season. It’s starting to feel a little special. I know we have plenty of games left. I don’t want to overstate a series win in early September, but I also don’t think it means nothing.

Huh. That’s interesting. +300 is a good price for a Big 10 team that does not play a difficult schedule. Miami and Oklahoma got in at 10-2 last season. Bama got in at 10-3 after losing the SEC Championship Game. Penn State can get there by going 1-2 vs. Michigan, USC, and Washington. They would literally only have to beat one of the three preseason ranked teams on their schedule to hit double digit wins.

The usual suspects are rounding out the top of the pecking order at minus odds, which equates to percentages higher than 50% at Kalshi, Polymarket, and Novig. Those teams are Notre Dame, Oregon, Indiana, Miami, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas Tech, and Texas. Then you’ve got a group of Bama, TAMU, LSU, and Oklahoma in the middle tier. I never went to one and this trailer is making me wonder why I didn’t. Big mistake. I also just read Kinker’s blog from when this documentary was first announced back in 2024 and found this rundown of his sole Wing Bowl experience: 

“I only went to Wing Bowl once, but came home with many stories to tell. I saw Coolio perform at a strip club at 9 in the morning and got in a limousine with some Russian guy named Vladimir, which was after a former 94 WIP executive fell asleep in the VIP booth at a different strip club. Good times!“

Incredible. I truly missed out. Can’t wait to vicariously experience Wing Bowl through this documentary.

He went 6.2 innings on Tuesday night in Arizona, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six and walking one batter. Funny thing is that he was annoyed that he couldn’t close the door in the 7th inning:

Zeus has been on fire this summer. It feels like we haven’t talked about him much, though. Maybe that’s because Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter started to figure it out, and Cris Sanchez was dealing while Zack Wheeler struggled. Bryce Harper began to rake and the Luis Arraez acquisition stole some of the attention. Yet Luzardo continued to plug away, just quietly mowing down fools and left and right while looking ace-like on the mound. For real. He’s putting up ace-like numbers currently, and has the best ERA in baseball going back to August 1st, when the Phils started to put it together as a team:

That’s from our Sportradar data. Luzardo has pitched 41 innings over his last six starts, allowing just six earned runs and 27 hits. He’s conceded three home runs and 12 extra-base hits while striking out 52 batters, which also happens to be #1 if you filter by that statistic. Gavin Williams is #2 with 49 strikeouts since August 1st.

Luzardo’s only bad start over the past two months was an aberration six-run game down in Miami, but he’s been so solid for most of the summer.

What’s also great to see is that Sanchez and Nola are on this list. The Phillies have three pitchers in the top 20 of ERA over the past month or so. Painter has a 3.95 ERA in the time frame, which is perfectly fine considering he was sent down earlier in the season and is currently the 5th starter. And while Wheeler had been off, he went out on Sunday against the Angels and delivered six innings of one-run, four-hit baseball. He looked much more like himself out there.

The Phillies are HOT. They already won the series against the D Backs and these upcoming Braves games are HUGE.

We all know that change is inevitable, but still, actually seeing the literalization of time’s constant, indifferent march forward is rattling nonetheless. Jim is supposed to have a mustache. He is meant to. I know this to be true the same way I know the moon is round and the sun is bright and hurts to look at. I have constructed a worldview based on these facts, and I feel at home in this worldview:

But now things are different. Jim has no mustache, which unsettlingly prods at my mind with the knowledge that, eventually, everything can and will change. The moon’s shape could become tube-like. The sun’s brightness may be replaced by a soft, dim glow, like a reading lamp. Anything can happen, and given enough time, all of it likely will.

It is terrifying. I do not like it. And I am not alone in my shock and dismay:

Looks like a Temple game at Lincoln Financial Field. Apparently it was really hot out in LA last weekend, and San Jose State isn’t some sexy opponent. There wasn’t a lot of hype for the game. But Southern Cal is ranked inside the top 15 and this is the same program that used to roll out Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart and LenDale White and Dwayne Jarrett and all of these dudes. The Coliseum was ROCKING. Now they’re playing in front of 25 people as a “Big 10” school.

Head coach Lincoln Riley said this about the criticism, via ESPN:

“This is USC — people are going to have an opinion,” Riley said. “I don’t buy into the false narrative. I think that comes from a lot of people that don’t follow our program, and most of those have never stepped foot in the Coliseum.”

The 14th-ranked Trojans opened their highly anticipated fifth season under Riley with only 51,144 fans — which appeared to be a generous estimate — in reported attendance Saturday against San Jose State. The game kicked off at noon local time, and the temperature reached 96 degrees at one point, with a heat index over 100 degrees. USC won 42-26.

“We understand the factors that impacted Saturday’s attendance,” the school said Monday in a statement. “We have high expectations and a premier home schedule this season, and we know the competitive advantage an electric Coliseum atmosphere can provide our program. We thank our fans who showed up Saturday and look forward to seeing increased attendance the rest of the season.”

False narrative? What is false about the narrative? The live television broadcast showed a half-empty stadium! It’s not a “narrative” at all; it is factual. It’s verified by using our own eyeballs. The Coliseum was empty. Maybe people will show up for USC vs. Oregon, Washington, and Ohio State in September and October, when the opponent is bigger and the weather is cooler. But the bottom line is that if this was Penn State or Meeeechigan or the SEC, the building would be full on day 1. Those students wouldn’t be worried about the weather. At best, USC is gonna get the “front runner” label if the crowd only shows up for the good games. Bama fans would be out there in full force for a 70-point, Week 1 beatdown of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in 97-degree heat. They’d be wearing their pastel-colored shorts and polo shirts with their Ray-Bans and Croakies.

Anyway, isn’t it funny how college football coaches just say shit? They say things that make no sense at all and are not even remotely rooted in reality. Kirby Smart once convinced the Georgia team that beat TCU 65-7 that they were being “disrespected” going into the season. Not a single person was disrespecting the Bulldogs that year. Their preseason win total was 10.5!

Hurts is basically saying that a GQ interview is deeper than a typical session with beat writers. He was expecting more questions or deeper questions or non-football questions. That was my interpretation of this snippet without going back and sitting down and watching the prior 30 minutes (yet). But I’d assume Baron was just trying to be polite while not taking up too much of Jalen’s time, and Hurts seemingly thought it would go longer. Maybe he was underwhelmed.

But yes, this is funny. Jeff McLane gets a shout out along with “Eliot Short-whatever-his-name-is.” People will interpret this as Jalen dunking on ESP or maybe just honestly not knowing his name, which can be construed as disrespectful, but this is the easiest spin ever for 94 WIP. They can simply say that Eliot was name dropped by Jalen Hurts in an interview. Now McLane and ESP are the top beat writers, according to Hurts. Jalen DID say that he’d call one of those guys if he wanted to “address Eagles,” so that’s ammunition right there. Hurts didn’t mention Tim McManus or Dave Zangaro or Reuben Frank, right? So WIP can, and will, weaponize this. They probably already have, I just don’t listen anymore so I can’t confirm. I actually took WIP off my car presets and replaced it with Q102 because my daughters like pop music. But I do sometimes listen to DeCamara and the nights/weekends crew.

This morning, I faced a recent personal failure by pleading no contest to a civil offense for OWI in Wisconsin. I own this completely.

Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain. That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.

As I have taught my three young sons: when you fall short, you stand up and take full responsibility. That is an important first step. The harder and more important step is examining the path that brought you here and making the changes necessary to move forward.

That path requires honesty.

None of this is an excuse. These are my failures, and I take responsibility for them.

The past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally significant. It has required me to confront and own my mistakes fully—to the Lord, to myself, to my family, and now to the public.

I am working closely with a team of doctors to address my health and make the necessary changes. I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, my friends, and the NFL community including players, coaches, and owners. Your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.

As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS, I kindly ask for privacy during this period.

Pretty informative statement here, I think. Sounds like Romo’s been dealing with a lot of pain since his playing days, which is a shame. Good to hear he’s working with a team of doctors to figure out a healthier plan going forward. Pain killers are rough. Having to rely on them is a really tough spot to be in, but it’s heartening to hear he’s nipping it in the bud and working hard to make the changes he needs to.

Temple is a mid-tier Group of Five school that finished the 2025 season with a 5-7 record.

Even if the Owls remarkably improve this year, I can’t see this team giving the Nittany Lions much trouble. There was that one time in 2015, however.

Ehhh, I dunno.

Penn State also plays Marshall and Buffalo in the non-conference, and both schools are coming off 5-7 seasons in the Sun Belt and MAC, respectively. The American was much better than those conferences last year, with Tulane, North Texas, and Navy all winning double-digit games. The Sun Belt and MAC combined only had three teams with 10+ wins in Western Michigan, James Madison, and ODU. I think Temple easily wins 7 or 8 games playing against conference opponents like South Alabama, Georgia State, and Ball State. In fact, I think Temple would win 6 out of 10 against both Marshall and Buffalo on a neutral field.

I love Phil. Phil’s the man. And I always thought the school did him extremely dirty by unceremoniously letting him go back in 2019. The man’s a Philly basketball legend, a winner, and an overall great guy who did nothing but act as a model ambassador for the university for over three decades – all until the new (at the time) athletic director, Jill Bodensteiner, stepped in and discarded him without a thought after 34 years. 34 years! Can you imagine? Unbelievable. And for what? To hire Billy Lange, who went 81–104 (.438) in six years on Hawk Hill and didn’t make a single NCAA tournament? Lange, who bailed on the team two weeks before the 2025-2026 season began to take a job as an assistant coach with the Knicks? You know who’d never do a worm-move like that? Phil! Jill really torpedoed the school’s culture for nothing! I’m getting mad about it all over again just tying it out here. But I digress…

The reason all of this is on my mind today is that the official Saint Joe’s men’s basketball account on Instagram and X posted about Phil Martelli on Monday, wishing the coach a happy birthday:

I just searched pretty thoroughly through the school’s official social accounts, and I cannot find a single post mentioning Phil since he was fired in 2019. That’s seven years! A seven-year Phil drought! And it’s finally come to an end. That’s not nothing! 

To me, this feels like new athletic director Ash Puri trying to right the wrongs done by the previous administration (Bodensteiner left SJU to become the commissioner of the Horizon League in February, which is insane; she nearly gutted the SJU basketball program and somehow spun it into a bigger job). And if this is indeed Ash’s doing, I salute him. This is good. This is necessary. It’s a small step, yes, but I’m hoping it’s the first on the way to bringing Phil back to Hawk Hill. It’s long overdue. The time is now…

I’m open to all kinds of ideas for how to do this officially. Name the court at Hagan Arena “Martelli Court.” Put a statue of him and Jameer Nelson and Delonte West in front of the arena next to that newish big Hawk they got out there. Hire Phil in some sort of big senior advisory role (if he’d want to do something like that, seems like he’s having fun and staying busy nowadays) so he can help bring back the family-feel this program used to have, before Jill tried turning Saint Joe’s athletics into run-of-the-mill corporate dogshit with no respect for tradition or history, as if the university were a Best Buy or Nabisco or Exxon Mobil and was only concerned with the bottom line.

The fans hated all that the whole time. It was awful. It set the program back a ton. So let’s get Phil back in the mix. Let’s get this thing back on track here.

A lot of it had to do with Bryce Harper.

He’s had arguably the best month of his entire Phillies career over the last 31 days, slashing .333/.496/.573 with 8 doubles, 5 home runs, 32 hits, and 14 RBIs. It’s good for a 1.069 OPS.

The homers, doubles in the gap, and constant slashing of the baseball have all jolted the Phillies team. But nothing has helped this team more than Bryce Harper’s walks. Harper walked 31 time in August, the most he’s walked in a month with the Phillies by a wide margin. His previous record in Philadelphia was 25 back in September of 2021.

Luis Arraez in the cleanup spot behind Harper has served as the ultimate protection. Even with Arraez holding just a .685 OPS since joining the Phillies, he’s been a driving force in Harper’s improved production.

The 2026 season has been phenomenal for the Phillies star, who came into the year with a little extra motivation after a weird offseason. We all remember the “not elite” comment from Dave Dombrowski, and we’d be lying to ourselves to believe that Harper has let that go. He’s looked comfortable as ever over the last few months, but really the entire season.

Harper is 5th in the league in OBP, 13th in slugging percentage, 7th in OPS (4th in the NL), and leads all of Major League Baseball with 97 walks. Harper has not walked 100+ times in a season since 2021. He hasn’t walked 80+ times since 2023. He has completely flipped his discipline at the plate, and it’s gone a long way for himself and the team.

It’s not a secret that the Phillies’ have had one of their best months in franchise history the same month of Harper’s breakout. When Harper (and Kyle Schwarber) go, the Phillies go. That’s been the saying for years. But now with other guys contributing more, like Alec Bohm, Bryson Stott, Justin Crawford, and Edmundo Sosa, Harper’s elite play has jolted this team back into the conversation of a serious pennant-winning threat.

The Phillies have a massive stretch of games ahead. They kicked it off on Monday night with a great win against the Diamondbacks in a stadium that’s haunted the Phils for years. They have two more against the DBacks, then 7 of their next 10 against the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves. What will this division look like in the middle of September? I do not know. The next week and a half will probably decide the fate of the Phillies’ first round opponent in the postseason.

They need Harper to continue this hot streak… obviously. He has now been on-base in 33 straight games, a new career high for the veteran. The Phillies are not thinking about personal accolades… they’re thinking about setting themselves up for postseason success after falling short in four consecutive years.

But Harper’s success somehow seems to be getting swept under the rug. After some asinine comments from the fanbase after Harper’s first 12 games of 2026, he has once again cemented himself as one of the best players in all of baseball. Oh yeah, and he hasn’t missed a single game this season.

I was working at the ABC affiliate in Las Vegas. I really wanted to come back to the East Coast, and when I stepped inside the Channel 6 building for my interview, I felt at home. And I still feel that way today.

Now, after I was hired, I had two days — an entire two days — to learn the Action News format and how to pronounce Schuylkill and Conshohocken. And then I was put on the noon newscast, filling in for the late, great Dave Frankel. I still remember exactly what I was wearing: a Kelly-green wool suit. I was so nervous, I was worried viewers would see my kneecaps shaking. I honestly felt I didn’t measure up to the rest of the talent here. They were so confident, so self-assured.

I talked to my news director about my concerns, and he told me to observe and learn, and that my coworkers would raise me up to their level. And they did. And they continue to raise me up every single day. I learned from the best: Dave Roberts, Jim Gardner, Brian Taff, Rick Williams — who makes me laugh every day with his corny jokes. Let’s face it, like we said, you can’t fake chemistry. You see that, and that’s part of our special connection with all of you.

I’ve met families who’ve been watching Action News for several generations. Most people in this area can sing the Action News theme song. And I’ve even met several young Cecilys named after me. What an honor.

I want to thank you for trusting us for your forecast, especially during severe weather. This was great. What a nice farewell. Viewers love her enough to name their kids after her. She ensured that her work to help animals will continue going after she retires. That’s what’s up. That’s great. Cecily rules, and she deserved the sendoff party the station threw after she wrapped her final broadcast, as well as the very nice things her coworkers said about her in that piece. Here are some quotes that stood out:

“She would stop and talk to everybody who called out her name. She would ask their name. She would pose for photos,” (6abc President & General Manager John Morrisaid) said. “She would give them special moments because she knew how important that was to them.”

“But I have to say, one of the many things I admire about you, you love to laugh and smile. You see that every day on Action News. You see that all over social media. And that means so much to us these days, now more than ever,” (Chad Matthews, the president of ABC Owned Television Stations) said during his speech on Monday.

“There has been so much development in climate science over her three decades of working here. She grasped onto those developments as opportunities. As challenges, but also opportunities,” (former Action News anchor Jim Gardner) explained.

“She has helped people through times of real danger and stress. That was the final legacy of her science,” Gardner added.

It’s a bummer that she won’t be on Action News anymore, but you gotta tip your cap to someone who’s put in 30 years of work at the level Cecily did. Also, getting to choose to retire is pretty awesome. Being in a position to do it, going out on your own terms, all that sort of stuff. That’s great.

Plus, as she mentioned when she announced her retirement in July, Cecily has a bunch of cool stuff lined up in her post-work life:

Now, instead of forecasting snow, I’m looking forward to spending my winters in Florida water skiing, traveling and having lots of quality time with my husband, Greg; two adult children, Luke and Emma; and three rescue pups, Nala, Shelby and Charlie.“

All those activities sound great. Water skiing. Florida. Traveling. Three rescue pups. That’s as good as it gets. I would do all that right now if I could, too. But I’m still in the trenches. These are my working years. I need to put in thirty more years of blogs first before I can publish my emotional farewell blog… but Cecily’s situation right now is a great goal to have.

What’s with the Trevor Lawrence love? The guy has one playoff win in his five NFL seasons, and that was against Justin Herbert at home. Jalen Hurts has played at the highest level in two Super Bowls, probably should have won both, and has a Super Bowl MVP to his name. He has 21 postseason touchdowns, passing and running, and a 6-4 playoff record.

Lawrence is coming off his best NFL season, and so his 2025 stats outweigh Hurts’ 2025 stats. Big deal! It’s also a pointless comparison because Hurts is a dual-threat quarterback who makes off-schedule plays, limits turnovers, uses his feet, and throws a really nice deep ball. Lawrence is a traditional pocket passer with some mobility. He logged 4,000 passing yards with 29 touchdowns with 12 interceptions last season. Add in 9 rushing scores and a career-high 359 ground yards. He had a nice year but that eight-game winning streak to finish the season included two wins over the Titans, two wins over Colts backup quarterbacks, and then wins over the Jets, Cardinals, and Chargers. The only decent team they beat was the Broncos. Then they got into the playoffs and had a really good to shot to take out the Bills on their home turf, but Lawrence threw a late pick and that was all she wrote.

There’s just no way anybody can say with a straight face that they would take Trevor Lawrence over Hurts right now, because that’s based purely on statistics. Lawrence hasn’t done 5% of what Hurts has done in the postseason, and to me that outweighs any other arbitrary channels for comparison.

He’s not having his best season this year, obviously, but the season prior he hit .283 and got on base at a .376 clip. He’s 32 years old and in the second year of a seven-year deal that maxes out at $23.5 million in 2031, with a player option.

This is his 10th season with the D Bags and he’s probably growing tired of playing indoors in the desert. He should come join the Philadelphia Phillies and play in front of the great fans at Citizens Bank Park, who would have given him a standing ovation. They wouldn’t have booed him. It’s obvious the guy was going through something mentally, right? Yes. That’s the narrative. The ball went 464 feet and had an exit velo of 109.9. Jesus. It was also the furthest hit ball of his career, surpassing his previous high of 441 feet he set against the Marlins last year. Credit where it’s due, Ben Davis had it right on the call: “That is without a doubt the farthest ball I’ve ever seen Bryson Stott hit.”

But also, beyond the stats of it and knowing it actually was the farthest ball he’s ever hit, the homer was simply incredible by the eye test – you could tell it was a special one even if you didn’t track the ball. Bryson’s nice and easy swing, the full extension, him leaving the bat out behind him with one arm as he watched the ball go – it looked a father stepping in and taking one quick wiffle ball at-bat with the neighborhood kids. I guess Bryson’s just very casually sending balls into orbit now. That’s pretty sick. 

Also the sound of it. This was the perfect sound for a home run. Nice deep thud/crack. You could close your eyes and listen and still know the ball was crushed. That’s a nice sound.

The Phillies continued their hot streak with the win, and have now won five straight and 8 of their last 10. They posted an MLB-best 21-7 record in August (!!!) to improve to 78-60 overall, and now sit just four games back of the Braves in the division. This is good. I am enjoying this. If Stott can keep sending balls nearly 500 feet, I think we could be in store for a good September/October here. I believe it will happen.

“If he didn’t get hacked, then why would Tyrese post it? Are he and AI very good friends or something? Maybe Tyrese was so excited for his buddy AI that he heard the news and quickly threw it up on IG without Googling it to confirm it’s true?…

…Also, what is ‘Box Score?’ The graphic that Tyrese put on his grid has ‘Box Score’ watermarked in the corner. What is that? Does Tyrese write for a blog called ‘Box Score?’ Did Tyrese make this graphic for ‘Box Score?’

Then I searched ‘Allen Iverson Sixers owner Tyrese’ on Twitter and found this:

Ultimately, Ben Horney (???) discovered this is “fake news,” and that Allen Iverson is not, in fact, a new owner of the Sixers. And while I guess that’s technically the end of the story, I still feel like we have a lot of questions left unanswered. Why would Tyrese put this up? Why hasn’t he deleted it yet if the news is out that it’s fake? Is Allen Iverson going to make a statement on all of this? Should he? Has he heard about what Tyrese is saying about him? Why is this Tyrese’s picture on Instagram?

Sadly, we may never know the answers to these questions. But at least we know there’s still one Tyrese out there we can trust with this sort of stuff:

Everyone online is saying this is a very Sixers thing to happen. “Get out of Philly while you can KCP,” “The Sixers curse started early,” “This is why Bron didn’t wanna move to Philly,” “This sort of bad stuff always happens to the Sixers,” etc. etc. But I believe these reactions are dead wrong. Naysayers are being shortsighted…

His apartment is all wet, yes, that’s true. He’s going to need some towels in there, and a roof guy, all that sort of stuff. Big fan. Dehumidifiers. Maintenance-type worker guys will be in and out of his place a bunch. That’s not great. This all may be an unpleasant experience for him. I’m not denying that. But once the chores are finished, I hope KCP sees what this event actually was: A beautiful reminder from the universe of just how rare an opportunity it is for him to join this Sixers team, how rare it was for this team to come together in the first place, and the once-in-a-lifetime chance they have before them to do something special. 

This is what this is. This is a sign. This is an omen. This is as on-the-nose as a metaphor can get. The Sixers signed LeBron James. The Sixers traded for Jaylen Brown. The Sixers are real, actual championship contenders. This should not have happened. There was no indication that this was in the cards. Sixers fans have watched this team repeatedly fail to get out of the second round for the last decade, running into countless unforeseen obstacles and getting hurt and underachieving and choking over and over and over. 

Meanwhile, we’ve seen seemingly every other team have better luck. We’ve seen the Knicks, the Pacers, the Raptors, and the Heat make unpredictable, random-seeming runs to the Finals over the last couple years. We’ve seen flawed teams click at the right times, get favorable matchups, and overachieve. But never, ever for the Sixers. 

And if you asked me two months ago if this could be the year the Sixers finally get a little lucky, if things will finally break their way, if they could be one of those teams that makes a run to the Finals out of nowhere, I would’ve told you there wasn’t a shot in hell. I would’ve said the Sixers won’t compete for a championship for another decade at least. I would’ve said you have a better chance of being struck by lightning. 

And here we are…

Suddenly, these things are not pipe dreams. The Sixers are title contenders. Stuff is being struck by lighting. The impossible has become possible. The rarest of rare is now our reality…

It’s important that KCP, the Sixers organization as a whole, and all of us fans carry this lesson into the season: There is no ceiling. The tides have turned. We’ve crossed the plane of normal into an unknown realm of endless possibility. Rare stuff will likely continue to happen for all of us.

Some will win the lottery. Some will get dream jobs. Some of us will get struck by lightning a couple more times. Some will find a pearl in an oyster. Some will strike oil in their yards while driving in a post for a hammock. Some will complete a perfect March Madness bracket. Some will be attacked by sharks. It’s not always gonna be a good thing. That doesn’t matter. That’s beside the point. The point is that statistics and odds and what we thought were our limits have been thrown out the window. Rare stuff happens to us now, is what I’m saying. We are now the exception to what the world tells us was possible…

Good luck drying out your house, KCP. Hope you’re smiling ear to ear about your good fortune as you towel down your stuff.

Father Judge played Archbishop Ryan in Northeast Philly on Saturday. Ryan was up 13-6 with 1:20 on the clock and trying to close out the game with 1st and 10 inside the Judge 30. They FUMBLED the ball, Judge returned it for a touchdown to tie the game, then blocked a field goal and went on to nail the game-winning kick themselves:

There’s so much going on in the first clip.

First, it’s a great job by the refs, who held the whistle. The running back was still moving his feet and the pile was still pushing forward, so they backed off and let the play develop. Ryan’s quarterback does well to hustle back, but he swipes with the left hand and can’t get anything on the ball carrier. Then Ryan #9, who had sprinted all the way back from the 30, appears to grab his hamstring and go down injured before he can make the play. You see him hobbling off the field after Ryan #1 runs about 70 yards to bring down the ball carrier at the one-yard line.

It would have been a touchdown for Judge, but #52 was hot dogging it and celebrating instead of turning his head to find someone to block. He should be running wind sprints at Monday afternoon’s practice.

But yes – incredible! You can’t bet against Father Judge.

This was a matchup between a red division and blue division PCL team. Ryan is in blue, which is for the smaller schools (Wood, Carroll, etc), and Judge is in the red division with St. Joe’s Prep and La Salle. There’s some crossover in division play, but Ryan is a 3A school in football and Judge is now a 6A school. That opened the door to a four-team 6A PCL playoff, which includes Roman Catholic, SJP, and La Salle. Dave Caldwell broke this down for the Inquirer back in May.
