Press Release: Catholic Democrats Corresponds with Pastors Across Ohio to Keep Parishes Safe from Divisive Politics

Catholic Democrats Corresponds with Pastors Across Ohio to Keep Parishes Safe from Divisive Politics

Letter Publicizes US Bishops' Guidelines

Cincinnati, OH - Catholic Democrats, an organization that advances the rich tradition of Catholic Social Teaching within the Democratic Party and in the public square, has corresponded with all Catholic pastors in Ohio this weekend encouraging them to keep their parishes safe and free from disruption by divisive partisan politics during this presidential election campaign. In a letter faxed to, and received by, more than 600 Ohio parishes in advance of "Respect Life Sunday," the Catholic Democrats wrote to support the pastors who found themselves inundated this weekend by conservative organizations and representatives from the McCain campaign who have used the divisive issue of abortion to polarize Catholics for political gain. In 2004 it was well documented that the Bush Campaign employed similar tactics in Catholic parishes to their advantage.

On the eve of the Democratic National Convention, the Department of Homeland Security prepared to descend on another community for another massive raid, this time in Laurel Mississippi. "It is a shame that at a time of celebration by the Democratic party where the family theme has became central, hundreds of other families are suffering because they are being broken apart," said Joshua Hoyt, ICIRR Executive Director.

Catholics United Statement on Barack Obama’s Selection of Senator Joe Biden as Running Mate

Washington, D.C. - Catholics United executive director Chris Korzen issued the following statement today in response to Catholic senator Joe Biden’s addition to the Democratic presidential ticket.

“Catholics United believes Senator Biden’s selection as vice presidential candidate is a positive development for Americans who respect leaders who have strong religious, family, and personal values. Senator Biden’s well-known commitment to his Catholic faith has inspired his advocacy on issues such as genocide, universal health care, education, workers’ rights, and violence against women. His faith has helped him to find solace during times of tragedy and crisis.”

CrossLeft.org, CNN and Immigrant Campaign

There are moments in our life when we are presented with the opportunity to make a difference. We are given the chance to choose to take action or to stand idly by watching injustice. At such moments, Christians before us have chosen to invest the time, energy and financial resources necessary to take action. The abolitionists, the supporters of the Civil Rights movement, they have all in their own time been the prophetic ushers of a better world.

We are now, again, poised at such a moment. The issue which faces all of us today is the plight of the undocumented. The recent raids by ICE and the scandal surrounding the illegal oppression of the Postville workers- many of them undocumented migrants who were afraid to protest for fear of being deported- have reminded us that today we are presented with another struggle which as Christians we are obligated to face.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to be on CNN representing CrossLeft.org and progressive Christianity. This was not a random interview on the street, but rather a studio interview for a live broadcast of American Morning (CNN's morning news show).

Catholics United Calls on Senator John McCain to Remove Controversial Strategist from Catholic Advisory Committee

Deal Hudson Resigned from the Bush Campaign in 2004 amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations; Now Advising McCain on Catholic Outreach

Washington, D.C. – Catholics United today called on Senator John McCain to remove influential Republican strategist Deal Hudson from his position on the “Catholics for McCain National Steering Committee.” Mr. Hudson apparently continues to serve on the committee despite having stepped down from a similar position with President Bush’s reelection campaign when an alleged episode of sexual impropriety came to light in 2004.

In August 2004, the National Catholic Reporter disclosed that Hudson was forced to leave a tenured professorship at Fordham University over allegations that he solicited sexual activity with his 18-year old freshman student. According to the report, the encounter happened in Hudson’s campus office after a night of heavy drinking.

Press Release: Anglicans challenged on power, sex and 'traditionalism'

from our friends across the pond:

FRI 27 JUNE 2008
Anglicans challenged on power, sex and 'traditionalism'. ............

PRESS RELEASE .....

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
London, UK - June 27, 2008 According to the standard script, the current war in Anglicanism over sexuality, scripture and authority is one between 'traditionalists' and 'revisionists', 'liberals' versus 'evangelicals'.

But new research from the religion and society think- tank Ekklesia suggests that those who want to keep the church defined by very narrow parameters are straying from well established Christian tradition.

It points out that 'Anglican wars' are about power as much as sex, and that evangelicals and others are to be found on all sides of the debate rather than just one.

In a research essay entitled 'Tradition, Change and the new Anglicanism', author Savitri Hensman, who was born in Sri Lanka but lives and works in Britain as an equalities adviser in the community sector, looks carefully at past Anglican formulations and biblical traditions.

Catholics Urge Sen. Lieberman to Avoid Speaking Appearance with Rev. John Hagee

Washington, DC- The leaders of Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and Catholics United today urged Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn) to withdraw his support for Rev. John Hagee and the Texas pastor’s “Christians United for Israel” summit. Sen. Lieberman is scheduled to appear at the event in July. In a letter to Sen. Lieberman, the groups cited Hagee's “long-standing pattern of intolerant behavior” that includes comments offensive to many groups of Americans.

Hagee has stirred controversy in recent months for having referred to the Catholic Church as “the great whore” and claiming that God sent Hurricane Katrina to punish residents of New Orleans for immoral behavior. More recently, revelations surfaced that Hagee believes Adolf Hitler’s persecution of Jews was carried out in fulfillment of God’s will. The pastor has also made comments offensive to Muslims, women, and African-Americans.

Press Release: Catholic League's Bill Donohue Continues Partisan Attacks

Catholic League’s Bill Donohue Continues Partisan Attacks

Washington, D.C. – Catholics United executive director Chris Korzen issued the following statement today in response to Catholic League president Bill Donohue’s latest attack on Sen. Barack Obama:

“Today Bill Donohue issued a set of frivolous comments on Rev. Michael Pfleger’s recent inappropriate remarks about Hillary Clinton. Instead of focusing on the nature of Pfleger’s remarks, Mr. Donohue chose the unfortunate path of using the incident to question the character of Sen. Barack Obama. Catholics United is concerned that Donohue’s comments appear part of a systematic campaign to influence the outcome of the upcoming presidential election by maligning Sen. Obama to Catholic voters.”

Special Report Documents Rhetoric and Hysteria Surrounding Illegal Immigration on Cable News

Dobbs, O’Reilly, and Beck “serve up a steady diet of fear, anger, and resentment on illegal immigration”

Report Attached as PDF and Available Online at:

Washington, D.C. -- Media Matters Action Network today released “Fear and Loathing in Prime Time: Immigration Myths and Cable News,” a special report documenting the rhetoric surrounding illegal immigration heard almost daily on influential cable news channels. The report exposes how cable news overflows not only with vitriol regarding immigration, but also with a series of myths that feed viewers’ unfounded resentments and fears. Leading the charge are CNN’s Lou Dobbs, CNN Headline News’ Glenn Beck, and Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, all of whom have played major roles in creating this anti-immigrant hysteria.

The Pillar of Shame painted ORANGE!

Hong Kong, April 30, 3pm:

***** The Pillar of Shame painted Orange *****

The eight meter tall sculpture The Pillar of Shame
was today painted orange by the Chinese Democracy Movement

We have just received photos and uploaded them to the internet at:
http://www.thecolororange.net/uk/page160

The authorities had tried to obstruct the painting of the sculpture by denying the Danish artist Jens Galschiot and his staff access to Hong Kong as they landed in the airport on April 26. The expulsion has caused wide discussions in Hong Kong about whether China is now introducing their own visa rules and censorship on to Hong Kong. The Danish artist has been in Hong Kong several times before and is known for making peaceful art installations. He has put up The Pillar of Shame which has become a renowned memorial about the massacre on the Tienanmen square in Beijing 1989.

Press Release: Catholics United Welcomes Pope Benedict’s Message of Hope to the American People

Catholics United executive director Chris Korzen issued the following statement today welcoming Pope Benedict XVI's message “to Catholics and People of the United States of America on the Occasion of the Upcoming Apostolic Journey," released April 8, 2008:

"At a time when our country is in great need of healing and unity, Catholics United welcomes Pope Benedict's message of hope. We believe this message will find strong resonance with Americans of all political stripes and faith traditions in this election year, Americans who desperately hunger for a 'post-partisan' public debate that moves our nation beyond division and fear and reclaims a sense of profound concern for the common good."

"In putting forth the Gospel's timeless call to love one another, Pope Benedict's message offers a powerfully relevant solution to the core problems of our day: partisanship, materialism, and the culture of going it alone. We sincerely hope our leaders will take this message to heart, and help Americans work together to build a nation and a world in which all human beings can reach their full and true potential."

Press Release: MINIMUM WAGE 40% LESS ON 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF DR. KING'S FINAL DAYS IN MEMPHIS

MINIMUM WAGE 40% LESS ON 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF DR. KING'S FINAL DAYS IN MEMPHIS
Faith Leaders Call for Living Wage at Interfaith Gathering, March 13th

For Immediate Release
Contacts:
Rev. Jennifer Kottler, Let Justice Roll Living Wage Campaign, 773-960-8960, rev.jen.kottler@letjusticeroll.org.
Rev. Rebekah Jordan, Mid-South Interfaith Network for Economic Justice, 901-212-6309, msinterfaith@yahoo.com.

Forty years after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. came to Memphis to support striking sanitation workers making poverty wages, he would be shocked to see millions of Americans making poverty wages today. Faith leaders from around the country will gather in Memphis, TN, on March 13 to continue Dr. King's work for living wages for all workers with an event organized by the Let Justice Roll Living Wage Campaign and the Mid-South Interfaith Network for Economic Justice.

Dr. King told striking sanitation workers in Memphis on March 18, 1968, "It is criminal to have people working on a full-time basis at a full-time job getting part-time income… We are tired of working our hands off and laboring every day and not even making a wage adequate with daily basic necessities of life." Dr. King said, "Now is the time to make an adequate income a reality for all of God's children… Now is the time for justice to roll down like water, and righteousness like a mighty stream."

Press Release: Double Standard on Supporters

PRESS RELEASE

Double Standard on Supporters

Media focus on Farrakhan, largely ignore Hagee’s long history of controversial statements

Washington, D.C. -- In discussions of high-profile supporters of presidential candidates, many in the media have focused heavily on Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan’s praise of Sen. Barack Obama despite Obama’s repeated denunciations of comments Farrakhan has made, but have largely ignored Sen. John McCain’s embrace of an endorsement from controversial televangelist John Hagee. As Media Matters for America has noted, Hagee, founder and senior pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, has made numerous controversial statements about homosexuality, Islam, the Catholic Church, and women.

In contrast with Obama’s repeated criticism of Farrakhan, McCain openly welcomed Hagee’s endorsement, stating, "All I can tell you is I'm very proud to have pastor Hagee's support."

The REAL democratic response to the State of the Union

Democratic Response from Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius

The prepared text of the Democratic response, delivered by Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, to President Bush's State of the Union address.

An American Call to Action
I'm Kathleen Sebelius, Governor of the State of Kansas.

And I am grateful for the opportunity to speak with you tonight.

I'm a Democrat, but tonight, it really doesn't matter whether you think of yourself as a Democrat or a Republican or an Independent. Or none-of-the-above.

Instead, the fact you're tuning in this evening tells me each of you is, above all … an American, first.

You are mothers, and fathers. Grandparents, and grandchildren. Working people, and business-owners. Americans, all.

And the American people — folks like you, and me — are not nearly as divided as our rancorous politics might suggest.

In fact, right now, tonight, as political pundits discuss the President's speech — chances are, they'll obsess over the reactions of Members of Congress.

"How many times was the President interrupted by applause? Did Republicans stand? Did Democrats sit?"

And the rest of us will roll our eyes and think, "What in the world does any of that have to do with me?"

And, so, I want to take a slight detour from tradition on this State of the Union night.

Tim Kaine of Virginia's Democratic Response to the State of the Union

Democratic response to State of the Union

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine gave the Democratic response to the State of the Union address Tuesday. Here is a text of his remarks, as prepared for delivery.

My fellow Americans, good evening:

I'm Tim Kaine, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. And it's an honor tonight to give the Democratic response to President Bush on behalf of my Commonwealth, my fellow Democratic governors and the Democratic Party.

I worked as a missionary when I was a young man and I learned to measure my life by the difference I can make in someone else's life. Coretta Scott King embodied that value and tonight, as a nation, we mourn her passing. Our faith and values teach us that there is no higher calling than serving others.

Our federal government should serve the American people. But that mission is frustrated by this Administration's poor choices and bad management. Families in the Gulf Coast see that, as they wait to rebuild their lives. Americans who lose their jobs see that, as they look to rebuild their careers. And our soldiers in Iraq see that, as they try to rebuild a nation.

As Americans, we do great things when we work together. Some of our leaders in Washington seem to have forgotten that.

I want to offer some good news tonight—there is a better way.

Transcript of Bush's State of the Union, as prepared for the press

STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

As Prepared for Delivery

Madam Speaker, Vice President Cheney, Members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:

Seven years have passed since I first stood before you at this rostrum. In that time, our country has been tested in ways none of us could have imagined. We have faced hard decisions about peace and war, rising competition in the world economy, and the health and welfare of our citizens. These issues call for vigorous debate, and I think it's fair to say we've answered that call. Yet history will record that amid our differences, we acted with purpose. And together, we showed the world the power and resilience of American self-government.

All of us were sent to Washington to carry out the people's business. That is the purpose of this body. It is the meaning of our oath. And it remains our charge to keep.

The actions of the 110th Congress will affect the security and prosperity of our Nation long after this session has ended. In this election year, let us show our fellow Americans that we recognize our responsibilities and are determined to meet them. And let us show them that Republicans and Democrats can compete for votes and cooperate for results at the same time.

IPC Condemns Recent Attacks on the Black Church

Criticism Denies Historical and Current Role of Black Church as Central to the Spiritual, Political, and Social Life of the Community

Washington DC January 21, 2008 On this Martin Luther King Day observance, the Institute for Progressive Christianity (IPC) rejects the recent media attacks against the black church, specifically Trinity United Church of Christ, where Barack Obama attends.

Investors Business Daily's January 15th editorial decried Trinity Church for its "'unashamedly black' church that preaches the politics of black nationalism. And its dashiki-wearing preacher - who married Obama and his wife and now acts as his personal spiritual adviser - is militantly Afrocentric."
