Cosmologists have come up with a new way to solve their problems. They are inviting scientists, including those from totally unrelated fields, to participate in a grand competition. The idea is to spur outside interest in one of cosmology's trickiest problems -- measuring the invisible dark matter and dark energy that permeate our universe.
Original Link: http://feeds.sciencedaily.com/~r/sciencedaily/~3/VIOKXrmYrbY/101207210859.htm

Gabe Zichermann, author of "Game-Based Marketing", highly rated public speaker and serial entrepreneur does a fantastic job describing game mechanics like points, badges, levels, challenges, rewards and leaderboards and how they are being used in ever greater numbers. But what does this mean for "traditional" marketing & UI/UX and how do you leverage this trend in your engagement strategy? Moreover, how do we measure success, and why will every company have a Chief Engagement Officer in the next few years?

In case you are wondering exactly what does that mean, think of the site as a spot in which people contribute by lending their time, not their money.
Original Link: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/killerstartups/BkQV/~3/IWSUqil499k/sponzu-com-a-new-way-to-get-ideas-funded

while also asking people to send in new logo ideas:
Thanks for everyone's input on the new logo! We've had the same logo for 20+ years, and this is just one of the things we're changing. We know this logo created a lot of buzz and we're thrilled to see passionate debates unfolding! So much so we're asking you to share your designs. We love our version, but we'd like to see other ideas. Stay tuned for details in the next few days on this crowd sourcing project.
The folks at Brandchannel.com are hypothesizing that the crappy new logo was possibly just a stunt to draw some attention to The Gap. "And the whole logo 'redesign' was meant to drum up media attention so Gap could engage consumers in another PR stunt to redesign its logo?" asks the site. "We smell a contest in the near future. Free khakis for life?"
What do you think -- crappy design work or savvy PR stunt?
As part of its 2010 Annual Meeting, to be held October 7 and 8, the World Bank is making several announcements that point to the organization's support in open data and what it calls an "open development agenda." The World Bank is increasing the number of datasets it makes available. And it is also announcing its first worldwide app-building challenge Apps for Development.
The challenge is designed to crowdsource solutions for the World Bank's 8 Millennium Development Goals - goals like eradicating poverty and hunger and achieving universal primary education. The challenge is calling for apps to be built using the World Bank Data Catalog, in a move that hopes that by opening access to this data, that developers, researchers, and local governments and organizations will be able to better tackle social, economic, and environmental problems.
"Two years ago we were cautious about even providing an API to outside audiences," says World Bank Web Program Lead Nicole Frost. "Here we are, two years later, giving away all of our data, not only to Google but to other partners as well, and now it's part of our strategic vision - that's a huge shift. We've definitely changed how we think and how we operate."
DiscussAs part of its 2010 Annual Meeting, to be held October 7 and 8, the World Bank is making several announcements that point to the organization's support in open data and what it calls an "open development agenda."
An orchestra conductor faces the ultimate leadership challenge: creating perfect harmony without saying a word. In this charming talk, Itay Talgam demonstrates the unique styles of six great 20th-century conductors, illustrating crucial lessons for all leaders.

You never know where the best ideas are going to come from and it just might surprise you when the those trump the most "educated".

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind -- fantastic new book about a how a Malawian teenager harnessed the power of the wind

via Boing Boing by Mark Frauenfelder on 9/29/09

I reviewed The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind for Good. I think it's one of the best books I've ever read. Here's an excerpt of my review:

William Kamkwamba’s parents couldn’t afford the $80 yearly tuition for their son’s school. The boy sneaked into the classroom anyway, dodging administrators for a few weeks until they caught him. Still emaciated from the recent deadly famine that had killed friends and neighbors, he went back to work on his family’s corn and tobacco farm in rural Malawi, Africa.
With no hope of getting the funds to go back to school, William continued his education by teaching himself, borrowing books from the small library at the elementary school in his village. One day, when William was 14, he went to the library searching for an English-Chichewa dictionary to find out what the English word “grapes” meant, and came across a fifth-grade science book called Using Energy. Describing this moment in his autobiography, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (co-written with Bryan Mealer), William wrote, “The book has since changed my life.”

Using Energy described how windmills could be used to generate electricity. Only two percent of Malawians have electricity, and the service is notoriously unreliable. William decided an electric windmill was something he wanted to make. Illuminating his house and the other houses in his village would mean that people could read at night after work. A windmill to pump water would mean that they could grow two crops a year rather than one, grow vegetable gardens, and not have to spend two hours a day hauling water. “A windmill meant more than just power,” he wrote, “it was freedom.”

For an educated adult living in a developed nation, designing and building a wind turbine that generates electricity is something to be proud of. For a half-starved, uneducated boy living in a country plagued with drought, famine, poverty, disease, a cruelly corrupt government, crippling superstitions, and low expectations, it’s another thing altogether. It’s nothing short of monumental.

Read the rest of my review at GOOD.

(It was very exciting to read that William's favorite magazine is Make!)
