When we arrived in London we were whisked away to the pier via limousine. Upon arriving at the dock officials from Norwegian Cruise Lines met and introduced us to Edwin who was going to be our butler for the 12 nights. He led my family and I right through security, up the gangway and right onboard the Jewel. No lines, no checking in, no waiting. I was starting to like this treatment.

Once on the elevator, Edwin explained that our key would allow us to reach floor 14, where the 2 Garden Villas are located as well as the Courtyard Villa rooms. This private floor, just for suite and villa guests, also has a private pool, private work out facility and private courtyard outdoor dining. As wonderful as this area was, once I saw our Garden Villa I never felt the urge to leave and visit here.

When we entered the Villa we are welcomed by a large marble foyer with a beautiful fresh flower arrangement. Also a half bathroom is in the area. Walking straight ahead down a corridor, you enter the main living room which has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the main pool. To your left, a large dining room table, huge wet bar with a refrigerator filled with our favorite drinks and a wrap around leather sofa facing a giant flat screen TV. To the right, sliding glass doors lead out to a large private outdoor sun area with full size Jacuzzi and outdoor dining table to seat 10. Also outside here you have a private steam room and circular staircase leading up to a second floor sun deck with lounge chairs and hammocks. Remember this is all yours. No sharing allowed!

Stepping back inside you head back down your hallway to the back bedrooms. The master bedroom is on the left with a stupid-sized master bathroom with large his/her shower, sunken tub with flat screen TV, dual sinks, heated towel racks and more. Our bedroom has floor to ceiling windows, king bed, flat screen, espresso maker, fridge, sitting area and huge walk in closet. Down the hall a bit further is the bedroom for our 3 girls and down from that room is the back suite where we put my in-laws. So if you’re counting, that’s 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, living room, dining room, wet bar, 2 story sundeck with Jacuzzi and steam room and 5 flat screen TVs. Oh and a butler named Edwin. I could write another blog on just the service we received as a Garden Villa guest. Stay tuned.

Having cruised many, many times before I can honestly say nothing will ever compare to my family’s experience in the Garden Villa onboard Norwegian Cruise Line. It really was difficult leaving the cabin to head out into port. Do yourself a favor and price out a Garden Villa next time you cruise with a large family. Our team at CruiseNow.com is here to make that dream a reality.

Regent offers voyages to more than 300 ports, all seven continents, on ships that accommodate hundreds of guests rather than thousands, so the feel onboard is personal, individual, and accommodating. This six star cruise line knows exactly how to pamper, making the experience upscale but not uptight.

Every ship in Regent Seven Seas’ fleet has received several awards and honors. You can rest assured when you are onboard, you truly are experiencing the best of the best.

One huge benefit to Regent is the all-inclusive value. There are several things included onboard that are not with other lines.

Unlimited Shore Excursions!

Luxury Hotel Package

Beverages including fine wines and premium spirits

Pre-Paid Gratuities

Ground Transfers

In-suite mini-bar replenished daily

24-hour room service and no charge for specialty restaurants

These represent only a sample of all this is complimentary with this luxury fleet.

Now Regent is not your bottom-dollar cruise line, the upfront cost may be higher, but when you factor in the added value of included excursions, gratuities, great 2-for-1 promotions…the value is astonishing on this distinguished line.

Experience a Luxury Cruise–you will regale your Regent Seven Seas vacation to envious friends and create lifetime memories in unmatched opulence.

1. Customer Service

Now there is a something you don’t get every day.

Just to remind ourselves, its definition is “the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase”. Unfortunately, these days, you are more surprised to receive ‘good’ service than bad service.

Although the cruise lines train their call-center staff in the art of customer service, they are still a large call-center, so you in turn, are still just a number.

If you call to ask a question, you will typically never speak to the same person. Even if they do answer your questions, many have never had the opportunity to cruise, so they read from lists and scripts.

Our agents have been onboard the ships and can really give you first-hand advice about different cruise options. Through familiarization trips, constant training, and cruise seminars they have the research and experience to address your questions and concerns quickly and efficiently.

2. Personal Relationships

When you book your cruise through a cruise-only travel agency, such as CruiseNow.com, you are anything but a number. You are more than a name on a manifest; you become a part of our family. Seriously! We work in a familial environment, and we like to pass that on to our clients, we really appreciate each and every one!

At CruiseNow.com we value ourselves on our personal relationships with our clients. Our agents have clients, now friends, they have been working with for 5-10 years; they know about new babies, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, and are with them every step of the way. They know their vacation needs, and always suggest the best cruise line and destination for any occasion or quick getaway.

We are also able to alert you to deals and suggest future trip ideas, based on our knowledge of the industry and our relationship with you.

3. Knowledge and Experience

With our expansive knowledge of the industry, we are able to advise you which cruise line, ship and itinerary will offer you the best overall cruise vacation.

Visit Google and enter “cruise “. You will be welcomed with 89.3 million responses. You might need a little help narrowing down those choices.

Choosing a cruise is not the same as selecting a flight or hotel. There are many factors to consider that an agent will be able to cover with you quickly, so you are able to make an informed decision, know what to expect. Also, they will be sure to inform the cruise line of any special medical or dietary needs you have, so you book the appropriate room and the ship is informed before you sail.

Knowledge of the ports of call is almost as important as familiarity with the ships. Our agents will be able to offer advice and tips on what to expect, excursion ideas, and what to pack (you don’t want to wind up in Alaska in May with just tank tops and shorts).

4. Variety of Choices

Again, as you are not just a number, we will not just try to offer one cruise line to fit your needs. As a cruise-only travel agency, we are able to reserve cabins on every major and small-ship cruise line. Depending on your personal preferences, special occasions, traveling companions, one cruise line might work better than others. And the right one your first cruise might not be the best fit for your second cruise.

So you are able to keep up your personal relationship with your cruise guide at CruiseNow.com, as you experience different cruise lines.

5. Low Price Guarantee

And for being a part of our family, we want to make sure you receive the best and lowest price possible for your vacation. Because of our relationship with the cruise lines, we have access to discounted group rates and exclusive cruise pricing not found anywhere else.

Occasionally we are able to offer promotions with additional values such as onboard credits, spa or specialty dining certificates, a free bottle of wine or prepaid gratuities.

As added security for our customers, CruiseNow.com does NOT charge your card. For peace of mind, we charge the card directly through the partner cruise line. Also, if the price of your cruise drops after you deposit, we are able to have that rate lowered for you—as long as it is before final payment and not a restricted fare.

CruiseNow.com also NEVER charges any service or administrative fees–no $30 fee for names changes, or $50 fees for cancellations.
This is a surf simulator where you can either ride a boogie board, or if you’re really brave a surf board.

The complimentary FlowRider experience is offered 5 of Royal Caribbean’s ships…Freedom, Liberty, Independence, Oasis and Allure of the Seas. Oasis and Allure each have two FlowRiders!

I have personally ridden the waves on three ships. I took my first ride on the Freedom of the Seas back in May of 2006, it’s hard to believe it’s been almost 6 years already. It is sooo much fun.

The one thing I noticed, both while riding and standing in line, is that everyone cheers for the person riding the waves. Everyone is involved and cheering you on. That’s what makes it even more fun! You don’t have to worry about if people are going to laugh, because they don’t….really!

The staff working on each ship was always helpful and encouraging.

Here are my Top 5 suggestions on how to brave the waves on the FlowRider:

Take the time to watch other people do it before you get on a board. It’s fun to watch and you will see what to do and what not to do

If you haven’t been on a surfboard before, I would not suggest starting here. I would suggest getting a feel for the waves on a boogie board, you won’t have far to fall!

When it’s your turn, listen carefully to the staff member on how to hold your board and where to aim when hitting the wave. It can seem intimidating, but if you listen to what they tell you it’ll work I promise. Thankfully, I have never wiped out upon entering the wave.

The one thing they don’t tell you—you can’t see!! The water is splashing up in your face so you can maybe see 2- 3 inches front of you. Just be prepared for limited visibility. This is important when you need to steer, which you do simply by leaning either to the left or right, forward or backward. If you go too far back…BAM! You are wiping out! But, you get right back up and do it again!

My top thing to know before riding the FlowRider? WOMEN: wear a one piece or a t-shirt and shorts on top of a 2 piece. MEN: make sure your strings are tied tight! I don’t think I need to say any more on this subject!

Whatever you do…HAVE FUN!! KOWABUNGA!!

THE BEST WAY TO TRAVEL IS ALWAYS WITH A PASSPORT!

However, the law states that if you are a US citizen born in the US and you are sailing to the Bahamas’, Caribbean, Bermuda, Mexico, Alaska, Canada New England, or Hawaii and you are leaving from and returning to the same port of call, you can still travel with a Birth Certificate and a photo ID such as a driver’s license.

The problem with this form of documentation is that if you miss the ship’s departure from a port of call for any reason, including, but not limited to sickness or injury, drank too much and lost track of time (hey, it has been known to happen) you CANNOT re-enter the US by air without a passport!

To me it just isn’t worth taking a chance, you never know what may happen. Just get the passport and have peace of mind.

TIP: If you are applying for a passport or renewing a current passport, make sure to keep an extra certified copy of your birth certificate as a backup just in case the passport doesn’t come back on time.

If you choose not to purchase the passport and decide to use your birth certificate and photo ID, please make sure that it is an original birth certificate or certified copy with a raised seal, otherwise, it will not be accepted.

A popular question for first-time cruisers. It is hard to know what to expect, and even more importantly, what to pack.

Amenities you should expect in your stateroom across all cruise ship categories:

Private Bathroom. There are no shared baths at sea! Your stateroom will have its own facilities with a stand-up shower (some suites even offer a bathtub!), sink, and toilet. Although they are not spacious, there is plenty of room to maneuver and get ready for those formal nights. There will also be a vanity with mirror located outside of the bathroom, inside your stateroom, for even more storage and space.

Beds for Each Passenger. Each cabin has two twin-size beds that can convert to a queen bed. If you have more than two passengers, depending on the ship and category, you will have either a twin-size pull-out sofa or a twin-size Pullman bed that lowers at night, but that you can put away during the day. Please keep in mind some lines , like Carnival Cruise Line, do have stateroom categories that only offer a top/bottom bunk (essentially, bunk beds). Your cruise guide should make you aware of this, so you don’t reserve it unless you want to.

Hair Dryer. That is right, each cabin does offer a hair dryer.

Electrical Outlets. The majority of staterooms include standard 110-volt AC electrical outlets and hair dryers (some also have Europe’s 220 volt plugs). Check your ship’s specifications to determine if you need an adapter.

Television. Almost all staterooms will have a television. The selection of channels will vary and they do not usually provide a DVD player unless otherwise noted.

In-Room Safe. Most cruise lines provide a mini-safe to protect your valuables onboard. If one is not provided, you may visit the Guest Relations Desk onboard and ask for a safety deposit box.

NO Irons. Any item with heating elements or open flames will not be allowed onboard. This includes clothing irons, hotplates, candles, incense and any other item that may create a fire hazard. Curling irons and hair dryers are allowed. If you need a garment ironed, you may send it out to be pressed by the ship’s laundry service for a nominal fee.

NO Alarm Clocks. It is vacation after all. Most staterooms do not include a clock, or alarm. You are able to pack your own or arrange wake-up calls once onboard.

Just a quick phone call to your attendant and you can purchase a la carte beverages, spa services, or, my favorite, themed picnic baskets.

These fresh, themed picnic baskets from the specialty restaurants onboard include antipasti, Mediterranean seafood pasta, and salads from Tuscan Grille; jumbo shrimp cocktail, assorted berries, organic breads and healthy salads from Murano; fruit brochettes and country-inspired sandwiches from Bistro on Five. You also have your choice of anything from the main dining room to Princess’ Ultimate Balcony dining.

Let’s go over all of your dining options and let you know which venues have a cover charge, or as Princess says, a ‘nominal fee.’

There are dining options to match any mood, whether it’s pasta – served with freshly prepared sauces- or grilled halibut, complimented by a chilled glass of chardonnay. Even if you have a hankering for pizza, there’s plenty right by the pool. I do believe my son left enough for the rest of you!

Whatever your craving is, Princess is sure to have it!

In the Main Dining Room, Princess offers two types of seating–traditional and anytime.

Traditional dining is the classic cruise experience, allowing you to dine at set times (early or late; 5:30pm or 8:15pm) with the same server and table-mates each evening.

Anytime dining offers a more flexible dining option. It is similar to your traditional restaurant seating at home. This is just what it says, allowing you to dine with whomever you’d like at anytime between 5:30pm and 10:00pm. You will have the same menu, dining ambiance and service as would with the traditional dining. You will not, however, have the same server–although if you find you prefer a particular server, you may always request them for the next evening!

There are also several Specialty Dining options onboard Princess ships. Specialty dining on Princess is truly a treat. The crew is the best on the ship, specially trained for offering different dishes. What really distinguishes the specialty restaurants from other dining venues is that each item is cooked a la minute for the guest that ordered that item. As a result, it receives more individualized attention and arrives at the table promptly after it is prepared.

Sabatini’s – Italian cuisine and premium seafood, this casual atmosphere includes extensive personal attention from the wait staff that you will leave feeling like you were in an Italian ristorante. Sabatini’s can be a romantic dinner for two or a grand celebration. A multi-course dinner, featuring only the freshest seasonal ingredients. A nominal fee of$20 per person will apply.

Crown Grill – A classic steakhouse offering a warm and personal setting where the chefs make dining in the showplace environment something to talk about. The open, theather-style kitchen where chefs custom-prepare fresh seafood and cook to order steaks is truly and experience you will not forget. A nominal fee of $25 per person will apply.

Sterling Steakhouse – The sophistication of this restaurant features premium, cook to order aged beef. You will enjoy the unique option of choosing your cut from a presentation tray and watching the chef cook the selection. A nominal fee of $20 per person will apply.

Bayou Café & Steakhouse – Live music welcomes you into this New Orleans–style restaurant…a first of its kind at sea. You will enjoy the traditional Cajun and Creole –influenced dishes, just like you would if you were in the “Big Easy”. A nominal fee of $20 per person will apply.

Ultimate Balcony Dining – Enjoy an intimate, romantic dining experience with the breathtaking views on your stateroom balcony. This features fresh flowers, champagne and a deluxe four-course menu featuring delicate sweet lobster or a juicy steak. A dinner for two, $100.00.

So, as you can see, there are many options on board a Princess cruise for your dining pleasure–you will not go hungry!

NOTE: Dining options vary by ship. Once onboard, you may switch from Traditional Dining to Anytime Dining (subject to availability) with 24 hours notice to the Maître d’hôtel. Actual meal times are subject to change based on itinerary and season. Specialty Dining and Casual Dining venues vary by ship and charges may apply. Ultimate Balcony Dining available in select staterooms.

We booked it last minute (husband actually got time off!) which I do not recommend because it was extremely stressful attempting to get everything in order and everyone packed for a week in just two short days.

We drove to the port, a nice option to save money if you do book last minute as airfare costs considerably more the closer to your travel date.

The ship is one of Carnival’s newest, beat out only by the new baby of the fleet, the Carnival Magic. It is a very large ship with a gross tonnage of 130,000 that can hold 3, 646 passengers.

Overall, I was very impressed with the ship. It was extremely clean, fun and vibrant. The 3 spectacular water slides got a big two-thumbs up from us and everyone we met onboard. The ship’s Cruise Director and Assistant Cruise Director were absolutely hilarious and made sure everyone knew they were on the Fun Ships, that’s for sure.

The entertainment was varied and done well, and the Dream’s Dancers were super friendly. They even offered hip hop classes during their down time!

The entire staff was friendly, helpful and went out of their way to ensure our vacation was a memorable one. They were very detail-oriented and especially attentive to my daughters. They always had their favorites, whether is was soda or meal or towel animal, ready even before they were requested!

The waitstaff made dinner fun with songs, dancing, magic tricks and special napkin folding lessons. The food was delicious, as it always is on Carnival but we really enjoyed the variety.

We had a wonderful time and made lots of memories that I know I will always hold dear. My children are 9 and 13 and we always have a house full of kids, so it was nice to do something with just the four of us.

What better way to reconnect with your family then on a Carnival Cruise vacation, where fun times on the FunShips are endless?!

No one wants to go on vacation to get sick. Most cruisers go on their cruise and have a happy, healthy time. But, as with any type of travel (air, train, hotel), anytime you are around a large volume of people, there can also be a higher volume of germs.

It is important to take certain steps in order to safeguard yourself, as well as others, so you can enjoy your hard-earned vacation to its fullest.

We’ve compiled the top 5 ways to keep a clean bill of health while traveling on a cruise:

1. Be Honest. If you are sick, be honest about it when you check-in at the pier. Most cruise lines ask each guest to fill out a form during embarkation indicating whether they have experienced certain symptoms. If you are honest, it does not mean you will automatically be denied boarding, however, you may be quarantined in your cabin the first day. While that probably doesn’t sound ideal, wouldn’t you rather stay in your cabin than make half of the ship sick? Let’s face it, you would prefer that same kind of courtesy from someone else.

2. Wash your hands. Ok, ok. I know this is always what people say, but it is the number one way to avoid getting Norovirus (‘stomach flu’), a cold, or a any other illness. You should wash your hands before and after you eat, after the restroom, when returning to the ship, and when you have been out and about on the ship. As with any populated area on land, railings, doors, and even the slot machines, can have germs waiting for you. TIP: Use the hand sanitizer stations placed throughout the ship, but remember it should not take the place of hand washing, just in addition to.

3. Wear Sunscreen. Yes, sometimes it is a hassle to have to wait and apply sunscreen. But, wouldn’t it be horrible to have a sunburn while cruising and be stuck in your cabin? This doesn’t just apply to when you are laying by the pool, but also when sight-seeing or snorkeling. The sun can affect you differently in different parts of the world, it can be more intense than you’re used to. Sunburn can be extremely painful as well as cause fevers and headaches. Be prepared and bring your own sunscreen (cheaper than on the ship/in port), lather up before heading out of your stateroom and reapply every couple of hours.

4. Drink Water. Becoming dehydrated can make you extremely sick, so please make sure you are drinking plenty of water. It is just as important to keep up the fluids on the ship as it is off the ship. If you don’t like just plain water, consider grabbing Gatorade when you are ashore. Remember, drinking alcohol can assist in dehydration, so throw a water in between rounds of those delicious strawberry daiquiris. Onboard, the water is completely safe, all ships carefully treat the water to ensure its safety. But do take caution and check your cruise newsletter, or speak with Guest Relations, to confirm whether or not the water is safe in your ports of call. TIP: Bring a reusable water bottle from home, fill up on the ship and take with you into port. Saves money and brings peace of mind!

5. Vaccines. Some destinations require mandatory vaccinations before travel, such as the Yellow Fever Vaccine when traveling to South America or Africa. Most destinations do not require an additional vaccine to your routine US Immunization schedule, but always confirm with your cruise guide. So, it is important you are up to date on routine vaccines such as Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and even the seasonal flu. It is always best to be prepared, protect yourself, so you have nothing to worry about!

The most important thing is to have fun, enjoy your cruise, and do the little things that will help everyone have an amazing time and stay healthy!

To say the Enchantment of the Seas went through a renovation in 2005, is an understatement.

During a renovation, or ‘refurbishment’, most ships will receive new carpeting, technology, televisions in staterooms and maybe a new look to one of the main dining restaurants.

But Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas was, literally, split into two sections, a new midsection was added and she was then put back together again (a little like Humpty Dumpty!) This new midsection added an additional 73 feet in length!

With this upgrade came a larger pool deck (50% more room!), suspension bridges, the Boleros Latin lounge, specialty steakhouse Chops Grille, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream parlor and coffee bar, updates and additions to most public areas, a champagne bar and the ever-so-glamorous Centrum atrium, complete with glass-enclosed elevators.

The children’s programs offered onboard the Enchantment are perfect to keep your young sailors busy. The Enchantment offers Royal Caribbean’s signature rock climbing wall, along with a bungee trampoline that offers a unique experience to cruising.

The amenities, attractions, activities cater to active adults, families with children, multi-generational families, groups of family and friends traveling together, and corporate and special interest groups, as well.

Another great feature? Its convenient East Coast Baltimore, Maryland departure port makes it much easier to take that much needed vacation without having to fly down to Florida or the Gulf Coast.

The ports of call add to the exciting cruise vacation with stops in Port Canaveral (visit Kennedy Space Center!); Nassau (see the majestic Atlantis Hotel) and to CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s private island oasis).

Still need convincing? The best critics are those that have recently sailed on the Enchantment of the Seas. Read our client reviews below for a first-hand experience!

I just got back into the Baltimore port and waiting to get off the ship. This is my first cruise in life. But I would say everything on board is very good! Services are excellent, ship has a lot of daily entertainment activities, and ship has a lot of activities spaces and looks so beautiful. I definitely will come back and recommend it to everyone! J.L. (1-7-12)

Michelle – Just wanted to send a comment to you regarding our experiences on Royal Caribbean International’s Enchantment of the Seas sailing out of Baltimore on 31 Dec 2011. The reservations were for (2) Courtney’s and (2) Sellers’s. You could not have made better stateroom placements for each of us! We were in 3592 and 3590, 1 floor down from a main promenade and very near the central elevators, yet far enough away that the noise from each was never an issue. We felt that we were perfectly situated on the ship. The food was much better than our (Courtneys) last Royal Caribbean experience (Sept ’09) and we send many ‘thumbs up’ for the Chops Grille aboard the Enchantment. The food & service there were extraordinary – a great value for only $30 apiece. Thank you for helping make this a wonderful vacation experience for all of us! Sincerely, P. and J. Courtney (12-31-11)

L. and I were part of the “group of 10” who took the 7-day Royal Caribbean cruise from Baltimore. The most disappointing part of the cruise was beyond the control of the cruise line – the weather. It was so windy that virtually all of the waterborne excursions were cancelled, and we could not get in to Cococay because the seas were too rough. Ironically, this is the second year in a row that we have encountered ugly weather in Nassau. We need a new crystal ball. I will not take another cruise to Nassau. Turning to what the cruise line could control: the food, entertainment, and cabin maintenance were of high quality. The cabin steward was excellent and very personable. The ship seemed to be well maintained, and I would give high marks to the cruise director for arranging a number of interesting activities. The ship’s staff, as a whole, was helpful and energetic. I would definitely consider Royal Caribbean for a future cruise. I have spoken to —— and several others in our group about taking a future cruise to Bermuda. Both L. and I loved the atmosphere. I would definitely consider Bermuda a much cleaner and higher class destination than the Bahamas. B. and L. Sellers (12-31-11)

Hello Michelle, The cruise was great. Food was great. My only compliant was the kids were unable to use the indoor pool. They could only use it 12-2 & 4-6 on the first day and the last day. I understand that most ships have an adult only area but it is not usually the center piece of the ship as it is on the Enchantment. This should be disclosed. I could understand in the warm months but this was tough in the middle of the winter when the weather in Nassau was windy and cold and the seas were too rough to go to CoCo Cay. The only other thing was that we had to track down an officer that holds the key to open the door between the two cabins. Room Stewarts don’t have access to the key. My Time dining was great. Just showed up and got seated with the same Waiter every night. Thanks for the follow-up! E. Young (12-31-11)

Well we had an amazing time! The staff onboard was very friendly and remembered you from the moment they met you. Our Room Attendant always opened our door when he saw us coming and always asked how things where. Even our waiter noticed if we missed a night of dinner. I loved the towel creatures that where left on the bed and the way all the staff was constantly keeping the entire ship in clean shape was really great. The only complaint was that we didn’t go to the second island due to weather. I wish there was some compensation for that, even if it was credit to the casino or something the ship would get back. Other than that there where always activities going on and friendly staff to help whenever we needed!! L. Desjardins (12-31-11)

Overview:

One of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets, Curacao is one of the tiny “ABC Islands” –Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. The island was discovered in 1499 by the Spaniards and taken over in 1634 by the Dutch. Curacao is rich in heritage, both European and African, representing more than 50 nationalities.

You will hear Dutch, Spanish, and English – as well as a local language, Papiamentu, a colorful Creole dialect. Locals and visitors mingle in harmony-don’t be surprised if someone waves and tosses a friendly “Bon Bini!” (Welcome!) or “Kon ta bai?” (How’s it going?) your way.

The official currency there is the Netherlands Antillean Florin, but nearly all vendors and shops take U.S. dollars. Curacao is located 12 degrees north of the equator which means it is sunny and warm year round; the average temperature is mid 80’s. Curacao offers some of the best diving in the world. The local flora is unique; they have ingenious mechanisms allowing them to weather the dry, desert climate, scant rainfall, and the ever-present tradewinds.

Willemstad, the lively capital and one of just six UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Caribbean, joining the ranks of Old Havana, Old San Juan, and Colonial Santo Domingo. Willemstad is a great walking city, featuring sidewalk cafes, museums and shops and vibrant architectural touches, such as gables and arches.

Willemstad is split into two main districts by the Santa Anna Bay, a deep but narrow channel, Punda is on the east side and Otrobanda is to the west. Connecting the two sides of the city is a floating pedestrian bride, Queen Emma Bridge.

Where you’ll dock:

There are two main docking spots, one for newer, larger cruise ships and a second for small cruise ships. Whichever harbor your ship docks in; you won’t be far from the attractions of downtown Willemstad.

Most cruise ships will dock in Otrobanda, at the Curacao Mega-Pier in West Willemstad, just a few minutes from downtown. The aptly named Mega Pier is located in West Willemstad, just a few minutes walk into downtown.

If you arrive at the Curaçao Cruise Terminal, you’re within walking distance of the Queen Emma Bridge, which connects to Willemstad’s main shopping and business areas.

Once on land, visitors to both ports will be greeted by information officers and tour guides, who can prove helpful in deciding which parts of the island to see. Getting around on foot after coming ashore is easy and good way to see the city and its historical sites. The Queen Emma Bridge connects the two sides of the city and is a tourist attraction within itself. It is known as the Swinging Old Lady by the locals. It swings open sometimes 30 times a day to allow for ship traffic. If the bridge is open you board a passenger ferry for free to get to the other side.

Other ways to get about the city include taxis, buses, and trolleys. Taxis are available at both cruise terminals, be sure to agree on a fare before you head out to your destination.

What to do:

– Explore Willemstad : Stroll along the winding streets, extremely pedestrian-friendly, with more walkways than many other Caribbean cities, Willemstad offers easy access to everything you need. Shops and restaurants are usually closed on Sunday however sometimes exceptions are made when cruise ships will be in town on Sunday.

–When the Dutch captured the island from Spain in 1634, the Punda district was born. The new leaders began to build a fort, Fort Amsterdam, to protect their settlement and soon the city began to grow. Today, the Fort serves as the seat of the Government. There is a great one hour and 15 minute trolley ride, which allows a little different way to enjoy site seeing. It starts in historic Fort Amsterdam.

–Visit the anthropological museum, Museum Kura Hulanda, focuses on the predominant cultures of Curacao. It offers a world-class chronicle of the Origin of Man, the African slave trade, West African Empires, Pre-Colombian gold, Mesopotamian relics and Antillean art. The museum (located in Otrobanda) is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m.

–Mikve Israel-Emanuel is the oldest synagogue still in use in the New World and recently commemorated its 350th anniversary. The Jewish Historical Museum onsite occupies two buildings which date back to 1728. The two buildings, reconstructed in their original colonial style, provide a fitting background for the great variety of priceless ceremonial and cultural objects collected during the over 350 years of Jewish life on Curaçao: you’ll find artifacts like a Torah scroll, brought to the island by the first Jewish settlers, and hand-wrought, centuries-old silver items once used in religious ceremonies.

–The Curacao Sea Aquarium showcases species of marine life, in natural seawater aquariums, native to Curacao’s waters. Throughout the day there are several tours and presentations where you can watch and touch the animals and learn more about them. For some real fun, you can snorkel or scuba dive and hand-feed stingrays, sea turtles, sharks, and many other colorful tropical fish at the Animal Encounters or enjoy the activities at the Dolphin Academy

–You can take a guided tour of the Amstel Brewery, which produces the only beer in the world made from distilled seawater (You’ll need to phone ahead for tour hours). Tours of the Curacao Liqueur Distillery are also available.

–For the sun worshipper, Curacao has more than her share of beaches for you to choose from. Seaquarium Beach (located near the Sea Aquarium) offers white sand and palm trees, as well as convenient facilities. There are shops, bars, water sports vendors and restaurants, making it ideal for families. Playa Porto Mari has a unique double coral reef, where you explore one, swim over it and find another. Equipment rental, bar and restaurant are nearby. Curacao’s newest park, the Caracas Bay Island, is geared to divers, nature buffs, families and explorers. Located on the Caracas Bay peninsula, options include mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, banana boat rides and snorkeling tours. The Cas Abao Beach on Banda Abao has a white-sand beach, palm trees and parasols.

Curacao will be included in Southern Caribbean Itineraries:

If not, then you are either: not married; don’t have an iPad or are not married to someone who does.

You see, my wife is an iPad widow. I got my “new girlfriend” as she calls her last August and she says that was the last time I looked her in the eyes and talked about, well, anything other than the iPad or something I discovered on the iPad.

To say it was love at first touch would be an understatement. I didn’t know how much I needed her, until her warm glow embraced my soul. Just to be clear I am speaking of my iPad at the moment.

Suddenly all of these things that I never knew I needed, I can no longer live without. I use to tune in to SportsCenter for hours watching the score ticker, just to catch a glimpse of my favorite team (my teams are usually located in Miami, but that is a story for another day).

Now, my trusty little SportsCenter app keeps me up to date with gentle whispers of sweet nothings and scores, and all of the inside scoop a sports junky could ever hope for!

It is true joy.

“What are you doing right now?” my wife asks? “Umm, looking online for that restaurant we talked about last week ” I reply.

It is tough work to keep these two relationships going simultaneously, but they are worth it! I love my wife. And I looove my iPad.

When I travel, no more laptops are required, just my slim, light, sexy iPad that is the envy of all of those around, who don’t have such a hot companion.

Me and my iPad went on our first cruise together a few weeks back on the Celebrity Eclipse. It was a “working” cruise and unfortunately my wife and son couldn’t make the trip with me, but my iPad did and we had a grand time. I held her as we walked and made the other guests jealous. We listened to music together, we wrote love letters to my son and we even checked on the family at home. Isn’t she sweet?

And then we headed out to meet some of her family at the iLounge.

The first of its kind, the iLounge is an authorized Apple distributor right in the middle of this gorgeous ship. And guess what, just like at your local Apple store at home, it was crowded. It may have been the busiest place on the ship. And it was cool (not that I would have expected anything less). There were MacBooks, MacBook Airs, Mac Minis, iPods and of course iPads.

We were asking questions trying to trip them up and see if they really knew what they were talking about (we were in the middle of the ocean after all), but it was just like being at any Apple store, only better. We were in the middle of the ocean!

And we didn’t have to fight through the mall crowds and drive home. We just headed up on deck, grabbed a lounge chair, ordered the fruity frozen drink of the day and opened up the SportsCenter app.

Ahh, life was good. If only my wife could see how much fun we were having.

Before we knew it, we were back home with a bunch of new memories and friends. So we are sitting on the couch (me and my iPad) when I realize my wife has been talking to me and has just noticed that I haven’t heard a word she said as I was engrossed in the iPad.

“I hate that thing and wish I had never encouraged you to buy it!” she says exasperated. “She doesn’t mean it” I tell my girlfriend.

“It’s just tough being an iPad widow.”

Who wouldn’t love cruising on a new, innovative cruise ship?

Who said cruising on a new ship had to be expensive?

Most cruisers would welcome the opportunity to hop onboard a new ship launch. And if you have never sailed before, a new ship is an excellent way to start your love affair with cruising.

It seems as though cruise lines are in a friendly competition to see who can create the best vessel out there. Every recent ship debut offers something that is the ‘first ever at sea’. For example Norwegian Epic revealed the first ice bar at sea; Disney Dream, the first water coaster at sea; the Carnival Dream had the first Sky-Course (ropes course) at sea.

Competition is fierce and we get to enjoy the benefits of their innovation, design, and promotional offers.

We welcomed many new spectacular cruise ships in 2011, but 2012 brings even more introductions to fleets across the industry:

Viking River Cruises alone is launching four vessels. The Viking Freya, Viking Idun, Viking Odin, and Viking Njord. They are due to launch within just days of one another, beginning on March 22, 2012. This is a part of Viking’s $250 million expansion program. All of these intimate and luxurious river vessels will hold 190 passengers.

Viking River Cruises will also introduce two ships in the Summer of 2012. The Viking Embla and the Viking Aegir are also part of their extensive expansion program. 2012 looks to be a great year to sail with Viking!

Disney Cruise Line will debut the Disney Fantasy on March 31, 2012. This beauty is 128,000 tons and will hold 2,500 passengers. She is designed to be the sister-ship of the Disney Dream, however, she is destined to sail on 7-night Caribbean itineraries.

Luxury line, Oceania Cruises, is launching the Riviera in April 2012. At 65,000 tons, she is considered ‘mid-size’ and will hold 1,260 passengers. This is probably the most lavish cruise ship introduced this year.

Costa Cruises is enhancing their fleet with the new Costa Fascinosa. Her maiden voyage is scheduled to be completed on May 2, 2012, and will be the 5th ship in the Concordia-class. She is a larger ship, weighing in at 114,500 gross tons and holding 3,000 passengers.

MSC Cruises is introducing the MSC Divina at the end of May 2012. She is designed to be 139,400 gross tons and hold 3,478 passengers. TIP: Remember this is the cruise line that offers a “Children Sail Free” program on most sailings, and deposits are only $100.00 per person on all voyages. The MSC Divina might be a great opportunity to check out MSC Cruises.

Carnival Cruise Line will add the Carnival Breeze to their fleet in June 2012. This ship is part of the wildly fun Carnival Dream-class. She will be 130,000 gross tons and can hold 3,690 passengers. Definitely not a light-weight.

American Cruise Line offers small ship cruises along the inland waterways and rivers of the United States. They will be adding a brand new sternwheeler to cruise the Mississippi River. The new Queen of the Mississippi will hold 140 passengers and start sailing in August 2012.

Celebrity Cruises is putting the finishing touches on a ship that will add to their ever-growing and updating fleet. The Celebrity Reflection, the 5th member in Celebrity’s ground-breaking Solstice-class, will join her sister ships on October 12, 2012. The Reflection weighs in at 126,000 gross tons and holds 3,030 passengers.

All ships are now open for reservations, give us a call for your chance to experience that new-ship-smell!

With the headlines all about the incident that took place in Italy, people (even close friends and family) are anxious and contemplating the safety of a cruise vacation.

I have been in the travel industry for 26 years, and have never seen a situation as unfortunate before.

The cruise industry maintains an excellent safety record. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, cruising today is one of the safest modes of transportation, and the industry is constantly improving its safety procedures. Over the past two decades, an estimated 90 million passengers safely enjoyed a cruise vacation. In 1996, the U.S. Coast Guard conducted a safety study that concluded the cruise industry is the safest form of commercial transportation and that international safety initiatives being undertaken should further improve its safety record.

As part of these safety procedures, each ship is required by law to perform a muster drill, also known as a lifeboat drill, within 24 hours of departure. The purpose of a muster drill is to prepare passengers for safe evacuation in the event of an emergency while onboard the ship, and to familiarize crew and passengers with escape routes.

I have sailed on over 10 cruises and each time, the drill was performed. Sadly, this is just one the many errors made on January 13th.

The muster drill is always part of the cruise experience, especially when taking your first cruise.

All onboard amenities, bars and restaurants close for the procedure, and the crew takes time to remind you that you need to get back to your cabin and retrieve your life vest.

Your cabin is assigned a particular Muster Station, noted on the back of your door with instructions on how to put on your life vest.

Depending on your Muster Station, you will either be sitting or standing for about 30 minutes as you listen to the safety announcements from the Captain (for this, all guests must remain silent during the drill).

During the drill, the ship’s general emergency signal (seven short blasts, followed by one long blast) is sounded to notify passengers.

The muster drill is always the time when you want to get pictures wearing this bright orange vest, it is the telltale sign of the start of your vacation!

I remember my first muster. I was cruising out of Miami in May, and thank goodness we were on the ‘shady’ side of the boat. We had to put on those big, bulky and non-breathable life vests, then find our Muster Station leader and give them our names and cabin number, so they can make sure everyone is in attendance.

Since we were some of the first passengers to arrive, we had to stand the longest. But, we were also at the front of the line, so we were able to head back to the fun as soon as the drill was completed.

But, whatever you do, DO NOT miss the muster drill, it could save your life. With this practice, you will know the alert signal and where to ‘muster’, allowing for less panic and worry in the event of emergency.

30 minutes is all it takes. Then on to cocktails!

When you travel to foreign countries, you always want to be aware of their current health regulations and vaccination requirements. Immunizations vary by destination and do change from time to time.

You are solely responsible for providing proper documentation to the cruise line if any immunizations or vaccines are required for your itinerary. If you do not have an up-to-date certification, you will not be permitted to visit each port of call and will be denied boarding.

Information regarding required vaccinations for your cruise or cruise-tour is listed on your pre-cruise letter or Travel Summary (if applicable). Please check with your cruise guide if you are unsure whether or not you will require a vaccination for travel.

Whether or not a vaccine is required, all guests must ensure they are medically fit for travel.

We recommend that you consult with your doctor at least 4 to 6 weeks prior to sailing, to make sure you are up to date with any required immunizations or vaccines you may need.

Most vaccines take time to become effective in your body and some vaccines must be given in a series over a period of days or sometimes weeks.

If it is less than 4 weeks before you leave, you should still see your doctor. You might still benefit from shots or medications and other information about how to protect yourself from illness and injury while traveling.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) provide guidelines as to which vaccinations are required in each country. CDC divides vaccines into 3 categories: routine, recommended, and required.

Make sure you are up to date on your routine US immunization schedule. Visit the CDC’s destination page to view the vaccines recommended specific to the countries you are visiting.

The only vaccine required by International Health Regulations is yellow fever vaccination for travel to certain countries in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. Meningococcal vaccination is required by the government of Saudi Arabia for annual travel during the Hajj.

Other informational resources can be accessed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Traveler’s Health website at www.cdc.gov/travel or toll free at 1-877-FYI-TRIP, and the World Health Organization website at www.who.int/vaccines-diseases/.
