Possible bogus collectors in Grayshott/Headley

There are reports on Grayshott.com of possible bogus collectors in the Grayshott and Headley areas, collecting on behalf of a cancer research charity, not sure which charity. We have no notification from Cancer Research headquarters that anyone else is collecting locally on behalf of the charity. Accordingly these 'collectors'' have been reported to the police. We will report back here if we have any updates or clarification.

Bliss Charities Fair

Haslemere Local Committee will have a stall at the Bliss Charities Fair on Saturday 12th November. Doors open at 9 a.m. at Haslemere Hall, and our stall will include delicious cup cakes as well as Christmas cards, some present ideas and more fresh home baking.

Bliss, the special care baby charity, provides vital support and care to premature and sick babies across the UK. This is the 28th year that it has run the charities fair as an event that allows many organisations in Haslemere to raise funds in the run-up to Christmas, and we are delighted to have a stall there again.

2011 Street Collections - Record Result

We'd like to say a huge thank you to our 41 unpaid volunteer collectors who were out in rain and shine to make our 2012 street collections possible. They collected on four weekends in May and June in the Central Car Park and West Street in Haslemere, the Co-operative foodstore in Weyhill, Sainsbury's at Liphook, in Grayshott, and at Tesco's in Weyhill. A total of 94 one hour collecting sessions were done; four collectors account for around half of these, so we're looking for more volunteers for 2012.

Street collections are valuable not just because they raise money, but because they help to spread the charity's name and message. And it's good fun to meet generous and kind people; many make their own efforts through other events such as Race for Life or regular donations.

The result was a record sum of £3830.59 - generosity that we greatly appreciate in these tough times. Again, thank you to everyone that contributed cash or collecting time to make this possible.

2010 Street Collections - record results!

Our volunteers did a fantastic job in our street collections in aid of Cancer Research UK in 2010. A total of £3,400 was collected in 87 collecting shifts, in Haslemere, Liphook and Grayshott in May, June and July.

Street Collections 2009 - over £2,200 raised!

We've finished counting and banking the money collected in our 2009 Street Collections in Haslemere and Grayshott. The total was an amazing £2,263.42! Our 30 volunteer collectors carried out 58 collecting sessions (usually an hour long), and we'd like to say a big Thank You to them all, and to everyone who contributed so generously.

Anna (7) raises £25.94 for Cancer Research UK

Just to prove that all age groups can raise funds for Cancer Research UK, we'd like to thank Anna van den Bos (7 years old) of Haslemere who raised £25.94 at her school by running a 'Guess the number of sweets' competition. She's a pupil at St Margaret's School, Midhurst and her initiative involved asking staff and pupils at her school to guess how many sweets were in a large tin.

Anna had the idea after hearing an item on the radio, and asked her Mum if she could do some fundraising for Cancer Research. Ruth Holden, chairman of the Haslemere Local Committee, went to meet her class and accept the donation during a school assembly.

Thank you and well done!

Race for Life 2009

Congratulations to (left to right) Claire Hitchcock, Linda Hampshire, Kate Mackie and Sally Smith from Grayshott, who took part in the Guildford Race for Life on 6th June 2009.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK. Since 1994, women of all ages and fitness levels across the UK have come together at these inspiring events.

Some take part in celebration of surviving a cancer experience. Others take part in memory of a loved one or to give hope to a cancer-free future. But all of them share a common goal: to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work to beat cancer.

Every pound raised in sponsorship goes towards our vital work. This includes funding the work of over 4,500 scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to help more people beat cancer.

Claire, Linda, Kate and Sally raised at least £700 through their JustGiving.com pages, and they raised at least £100 more back in Grayshott. If you missed them in their amazing costumes, and would like to donate a little more, please click here (Sally's page) or here (Kate's page).

2009 Street Collections - Haslemere and Grayshott

We had a tremendous result from our first 2009 street collection days in Haslemere and Grayshott on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May. Our 21 authorised volunteer collectors did 40 collecting sessions in Haslemere (Brewers, the Central Car Park and Co-op Food Store, Weyhill) and Grayshott (Co-op Food Store / The Square) and raised an amazing total - £1141! Thank you to everyone who contributed.

We have further collection days at the Tesco store in Haslemere on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th June.

Haslemere Committee member honoured

Joan Barber, a long-standing member of Haslemere Local Committee, was honoured at a ceremony at the Café Royal on 6th June 2008, with Cancer Research UK's most prestigious individual honour for supporters, the Flame of Hope award. The certificate was presented by David Newbigging, Chairman of Cancer Research UK.

St Edmund's School 2008

St. Edmund's School, Hindhead, raised a fantastic sum of over £4,500 in their 12 Hour Sponsored Swim. The event was organised by teacher Nick Rowley, and colleagues. This is the fourth time that the school has raised a significant amount for Cancer Research UK, and we are very grateful for this support.

The boys swam in relays for twelve hours, starting and finishing with the school swimming team. Every boy took part including the four-year-old son of one of the senior teachers! Photo: Some of the boys present the cheque to Ruth Holden, Cancer Research UK Haslemere Local Committee chairman.

Grayshott Ball-goers raise funds for Cancer Research UK

An elegant marquee in the grounds of Amesbury School was the venue on Saturday 5th July for this year's Grayshott Ball. After an excellent dinner provided by David McCoy, the equally excellent band - May Contain Nuts - kept the revellers on their feet with a wide selection of very danceable music.

The highlight of the night, after a successful raffle that raised over £800 for Cancer Research, was a last-minute offer by Richard Lago of Carat Associates, to auction two day-long charters in the flagship of his luxury yacht fleet out of Portsmouth around the Solent. The two highest-bidding couples - Sue & Rod Neale and Valerie & Glen Blake - between them bid over £1000 for the nautical delights and , of course, towards the charity. So a very enjoyable evening resulted in support for a very worthwhile cause.

After the final sums were done, the total donation was £2200 - well done to the organisers and thank you Grayshott!

Race for Life - Guildford

Stoke Park, Guildford, was the site for the local Race for Life event on 7th - 8th June 2008. Grayshott residents Jo Phillips, Maggie and Cat Noah took part, along with thousands of others, of all levels of running ability.

Rugby World Cup 2007

We organised our usual game to predict the results in the 2007 Rugby World Cup.

Although the number of entries was disappointing in comparison with previous years, we also attracted a number of donations, including all three winners who generously donated their prizes: a big thank you to Peter Hatch, Keith Mayson and Nick Butt!

The final result of the competition was £160 funds raised for Cancer Research UK and a near miss to England who lost to South Africa 9-15 in the final.

Bohunt Fashion Show raises £630

The 2007 fashion show took place on May 24th and made over £600 for the charity. More than 90 students took part, including Year 10 boys (below right). They gave a fantastic, confident performance. Although this is primarily a Year 10 event, there were great performances from all years, including Year 7 (fairies, below left), circus skills and the school's most experienced dancers, James Revell and Bianca Paris.

2007 Street Collection

The 2007 street collection, held in Haslemere and Grayshott on 4th - 5th May raised a record figure - £2,148.28. This may have been helped by the fine weather and the Bank Holiday weekend, but we don't mind - it was a splendid performance!

Thank you to Tesco, Waverley Borough Council and East Hampshire District Council for making this possible through giving permission to collect. The total contributed by customers at Tesco, Weyhill, was a magnificent £1,175.27.

Special thanks go to our 34 collectors who between them filled more than 50 collecting slots (usually an hour at a time).

Grayshott Social Club Race Night

Grayshott Social Club held a Race Night on Saturday 28th October 2006 and auctioned the horses for the final race in aid of Cancer Research, in support of the Scout leaders who had their hair cut earlier in the day.

£500 was raised for the charity, including the winner's prize which he generously donated.

Grayshott Scouts 2006

Grayshott Scout leaders left to right Lindsey, Claire, Ed, Karen and Jo lost their hair in a sponsored event on Saturday 28th October 2006.
They raised money for Breast Cancer Research in support of fellow Scout Leader Sally Smith (foreground) who is undergoing treatment at present.
Update: The final figure is £11,200 including Gift Aid. Fantastic effort!
