Unity bands are available to buy at Grayshott Pottery and Grayshott Social Club. Volunteers will also be collecting this Saturday and Sunday at Tesco’s in Weyhill. Cancer Research UK’s vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

In the 1970s, less than a quarter of people with cancer survived. But over the last 40 years, survival has doubled – today half will survive.

Our ambition is to accelerate progress and see three-quarters of people surviving the disease within the next 20 years.

But we can’t achieve our mission alone. We rely on our dedicated scientists, doctors and nurses, and the generosity of our supporters across the UK. With your help, we can beat cancer sooner. Thank you for your support

... to our collectors and supporters who helped us raise another £818.35 for the cause at Tesco in Haslemere on 29th - 30th April.

We'll be doing some more collections next month, in central Haslemere on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th June, and in Grayshott on Friday 23rd.

We will be at Grayshott's Fair in the Square on Saturday 13th May, 10a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a community event to promote the voluntary groups and clubs in Grayshott, and we'll be looking for more volunteers to help with our fund raising activities.

A massive thank you to Worldham Golf Club, Alton, and Gary Tarling, their Captain, for supporting Cancer Research UK and the Brittle Bone Society as the charities for 2015.

Gary is seen at a special event at the club on Sunday 28th February with Liz Hind, Ladies Captain, and Sean Kennedy, Seniors Captain, presenting the magnificent cheque for £3,994 to Ruth Holden, Haslemere Local Committee Chairman and Area Fundraising Organiser for Cancer Research UK, Hayley Callacher.

The club and its members raised a fantastic amount and it sounded as if they had fun doing it. Thank you for making us so welcome; it was a pleasure to meet you all.

Grayshott Quiz for SU2C

We’ve received the final results for the 2012 Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) fund raising event, focused round a telethon on 19th October.

Grayshott Social Club kindly hosted a Nicky Butt super quiz on 3rd November, which raised a fantastic £672.50 towards the national total of a staggering £8,011,722.62 - nearly twice the previous record for a fundraising show on UK commercial television!

More importantly, we’ve raised enough money to fund up to 15 new clinical trials, each of which could result in a life-saving new test or treatment for cancer.

We’d like to say a very big thank you to all who helped Grayshott to play its part in this wonderful effort – organisers Sally Smith, Nicky Butt and Ruth Holden, Frankie’s Fish and Chips for the meal on the evening, and all of the local businesses that contributed to the raffle (list below). Great job everyone – thank you!

Quiz Night at Grayshott Social Club

Stand Up To Cancer - October 2012 - Channel 4

Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK are joining forces to launch ‘Stand Up To Cancer’ in the UK. Television, music and film stars will come together in October in a new national fundraising event to galvanise the public in the fight against cancer.

Simon Chapman Iron Man - fundraising link

Haslemere Herald dated 24th August has article on page 5 about Simon Chapman who is raising funds for Cancer Research UK and the Bobby Moore Foundation for Bowel Cancer. He was inspired to do this because his mother Christine, who still lives in Haslemere, was hit by the disease three years ago.

At the time of writing, he's raised £4,242.50 against a target of £2,500. The donations page is still open, but there's an error on the web link quoted in the paper. It misses the letters UK from the address, and so the link fails. Simon's fundraising page is at the following correct address:

Possible bogus collectors in Grayshott/Headley

There are reports on Grayshott.com of possible bogus collectors in the Grayshott and Headley areas, collecting on behalf of a cancer research charity, not sure which charity. We have no notification from Cancer Research headquarters that anyone else is collecting locally on behalf of the charity. Accordingly these 'collectors'' have been reported to the police. We will report back here if we have any updates or clarification.

Bliss Charities Fair

Haslemere Local Committee will have a stall at the Bliss Charities Fair on Saturday 12th November. Doors open at 9 a.m. at Haslemere Hall, and our stall will include delicious cup cakes as well as Christmas cards, some present ideas and more fresh home baking.

Bliss, the special care baby charity, provides vital support and care to premature and sick babies across the UK. This is the 28th year that it has run the charities fair as an event that allows many organisations in Haslemere to raise funds in the run-up to Christmas, and we are delighted to have a stall there again.

2011 Street Collections - Record Result

We'd like to say a huge thank you to our 41 unpaid volunteer collectors who were out in rain and shine to make our 2012 street collections possible. They collected on four weekends in May and June in the Central Car Park and West Street in Haslemere, the Co-operative foodstore in Weyhill, Sainsbury's at Liphook, in Grayshott, and at Tesco's in Weyhill. A total of 94 one hour collecting sessions were done; four collectors account for around half of these, so we're looking for more volunteers for 2012.

Street collections are valuable not just because they raise money, but because they help to spread the charity's name and message. And it's good fun to meet generous and kind people; many make their own efforts through other events such as Race for Life or regular donations.

The result was a record sum of £3830.59 - generosity that we greatly appreciate in these tough times. Again, thank you to everyone that contributed cash or collecting time to make this possible.

2010 Street Collections - record results!

Our volunteers did a fantastic job in our street collections in aid of Cancer Research UK in 2010. A total of £3,400 was collected in 87 collecting shifts, in Haslemere, Liphook and Grayshott in May, June and July.

We've finished counting and banking the money collected in our 2009 Street Collections in Haslemere and Grayshott. The total was an amazing £2,263.42! Our 30 volunteer collectors carried out 58 collecting sessions (usually an hour long), and we'd like to say a big Thank You to them all, and to everyone who contributed so generously.

Anna (7) raises £25.94 for Cancer Research UK

Just to prove that all age groups can raise funds for Cancer Research UK, we'd like to thank Anna van den Bos (7 years old) of Haslemere who raised £25.94 at her school by running a 'Guess the number of sweets' competition. She's a pupil at St Margaret's School, Midhurst and her initiative involved asking staff and pupils at her school to guess how many sweets were in a large tin.

Anna had the idea after hearing an item on the radio, and asked her Mum if she could do some fundraising for Cancer Research. Ruth Holden, chairman of the Haslemere Local Committee, went to meet her class and accept the donation during a school assembly.

Race for Life 2009

Congratulations to (left to right) Claire Hitchcock, Linda Hampshire, Kate Mackie and Sally Smith from Grayshott, who took part in the Guildford Race for Life on 6th June 2009.

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK. Since 1994, women of all ages and fitness levels across the UK have come together at these inspiring events.

Some take part in celebration of surviving a cancer experience. Others take part in memory of a loved one or to give hope to a cancer-free future. But all of them share a common goal: to raise money for Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work to beat cancer.

Every pound raised in sponsorship goes towards our vital work. This includes funding the work of over 4,500 scientists, doctors and nurses who are dedicated to help more people beat cancer.

Claire, Linda, Kate and Sally raised at least £700 through their JustGiving.com pages, and they raised at least £100 more back in Grayshott. If you missed them in their amazing costumes, and would like to donate a little more, please click here (Sally's page) or here (Kate's page).

2009 Street Collections - Haslemere and Grayshott

We had a tremendous result from our first 2009 street collection days in Haslemere and Grayshott on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May. Our 21 authorised volunteer collectors did 40 collecting sessions in Haslemere (Brewers, the Central Car Park and Co-op Food Store, Weyhill) and Grayshott (Co-op Food Store / The Square) and raised an amazing total - £1141! Thank you to everyone who contributed.

We have further collection days at the Tesco store in Haslemere on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th June.

Haslemere Committee member honoured

Joan Barber, a long-standing member of Haslemere Local Committee, was honoured at a ceremony at the Café Royal on 6th June 2008, with Cancer Research UK's most prestigious individual honour for supporters, the Flame of Hope award. The certificate was presented by David Newbigging, Chairman of Cancer Research UK.

St Edmund's School 2008

St. Edmund's School, Hindhead, raised a fantastic sum of over £4,500 in their 12 Hour Sponsored Swim. The event was organised by teacher Nick Rowley, and colleagues. This is the fourth time that the school has raised a significant amount for Cancer Research UK, and we are very grateful for this support.

The boys swam in relays for twelve hours, starting and finishing with the school swimming team. Every boy took part including the four-year-old son of one of the senior teachers! Photo: Some of the boys present the cheque to Ruth Holden, Cancer Research UK Haslemere Local Committee chairman.

The boarders enjoyed a barbecue after the swim was completed.
