They are often affordable and if we&#39;re lucky can be quite luscious. The other day I tasted a 2007 vintage from Consentino Winery they label as &quot;The Zin&quot;. Personally, I&#39;m not to fond of clever or cute names, but this wine is exactly what you expect: a strong, traditional zin.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The wine presents a dusky, cherry body and the taste is all zinfandel. Strong, earthy flavors of tobacco, chocolate, blackberry with a trace of black pepper. I found the wine benefited from decanting, or at least let the wine open up for a while in your glass. I found it extremely tight otherwise. The wine has a short finish. You could drink this now but I think this will be much better in 2012.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The Zin is a modest and affordable ($15-$20) offering for casual wine drinking. These (typically) Spanish reds tend to very affordable and quite enjoyable. The other night we opened a 2006 Venta Mazzaron Tempranillo. This wine is 100% tempranillo and drinks quite nicely.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
At first pour the first thing I noticed was a smoky, berry nose. In the glass this wine offers a pleasant dark strawberry color with nice legs. Sipping reveals berries, a trace of plum with a very subtle spice note. The wine finishes with a strong tannic coat, that actually I found appetizing. While tasting, I realized this would be a perfect match to a tapa plate of olives and cured meats. I found some salami and it paired wonderfully.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You can definitely drink this now, although I&#39;d like to try a bottle in a few years. The first thing you have to understand is that this is not an apple-flavored vodka, but rather a vodka distilled from apples. While I generally prefer traditional potato or grain based vodkas, I enjoyed Beak &amp;amp; Skiff&#39;s vodka.&amp;nbsp; It is crystal clear with a very clean nose, but not antiseptic. The first taste introduces a very subtle apple overtone, but it is brief and in no way interferes with the drink. I found it exceptionally smooth with gentle finish, that again offers a whiff of apple. I enjoyed sipping it neat but I imagine it would be quite bracing chilled. When used in a cocktail, the apple tones fade away as you might hope and expect. Again, this isn&#39;t a flavored vodka.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you appreciate fine vodka and get you hands on a bottle, I think you&#39;ll enjoy this. You can purchase Beak &amp;amp; Skiff&#39;s apple vodka at their distillery (which has a tasting bar) or in a few select stores in Central NY. His snarky, often aggressive prose and attitude leaves little middle ground. Mr. Bourdain&#39;s latest offering of culinary reflections proves this isn&#39;t going to change. I recently finished,&lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/Medium-Raw-Bloody-Valentine-People/dp/0061718947&quot;&gt; &lt;i&gt;Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/a&gt; (Ecco 2010) and it was a delicious read.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I was fascinated with Mr. Bourdain&#39;s breakthrough memoir &lt;i&gt;Kitchen Confidential&lt;/i&gt;. I couldn&#39;t get enough of the&amp;nbsp; raucous and riotous world of a professional kitchen. It was if he had propped open the door for all of use to peer in and marvel at the hidden world of all the people involved in making our culinary experiences memorable. I approached &lt;i&gt;Medium Raw&lt;/i&gt; with the same anticipation and was not disappointed.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If anything, I think Mr. Bourdain has evolved as a writer, albeit often foul-mouthed. But this no holds-barred approach is what I think many readers and fans find appealing. If something is crap, he&#39;ll say so and explain why. For example, I especially enjoyed his chapter on heroes and villains in the world of food. I can&#39;t say I agree 100% with every choice, but his opinions are anything but subtle, yet reasoned.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I found it interesting that Mr. Bourdain has also matured professionally and isn&#39;t afraid to say so. While he still poo-poos, sometimes with real acid, members of the Food Network family, I was glad to see him express his admiration and respect for chefs like Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse. Even Mr. Bourdain realizes, to his chagrin I imagine, that he has become one of the culinariti that he used to mock. I also believe that the last few years hopping around the world has opened his eyes, and that too is reflected in this book.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Now, don&#39;t go thinking Tony has gone soft. There is still plenty of rant, served with a zesty sauce of profanity. &lt;i&gt;Medium Raw&lt;/i&gt; is often insightful, brutally to the point and recommended reading for any aspiring foodie, cook, or gourmand.&lt;br /&gt;

On their recommendation I picked up a 2008 Malbec from &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.flichman.com.ar/&quot;&gt;Finca Flichman&lt;/a&gt;. As promised this is a lighter Malbec without as much &quot;chewiness&quot; as I usually associate with Malbec. In this case, this is exactly what I was after.  &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This wine pours an inviting purple-cherry hue with a lovely nose. The Malbec (100%) is oak aged for 3 months and you can detect a subtle oak tone. Not overpowering in the least. The wine has a smooth finish with traces of spice and some lingering tannins.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Don&#39;t expect a knock-out, big, bold Malbec. But if you are looking for something very reasonably priced and pleasant to drink, pick up a bottle or two. Once again, Miner delivers the goods. I don’t drink a lot of chardonnay, primarily because so many times, the winemaker seems to get carried away with the oak factor. I hate wines that make me feel like I’m chewing wood. To me, a nice chardonnay has a smooth, almost buttery overtone with just a hint oakiness. This chardonnay is right on the money.&amp;nbsp; For someone in your life who thinks they aren’t really a Chardonnay drinker, this may be just the wine for them to try.&lt;br /&gt;
When poured, you get a beautiful, straw colored drink that is easy to drink from the moment you yank to cork to the time you finish off the bottle. To my palate I pick up a few hints of apple and citrus. There is a slight acidic finish, that with the subtle oak note leaves a warmth in your mouth. After a minute to savor it’s time for another sip. I’d say you can drink this wine today. I imagine it will improve a little over the next few years, but I don’t think you have to wait. I probably won’t.&lt;br /&gt;
This is relatively affordable at$30 a bottle, club members pay less. I don’t have much experience with Spanish wines so that was another reason; I wanted to try something new. But in any event I opened up a bar of dark chocolate (70% cacoa) to pair with it.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;This wine has a delicate berry-scented nose with a jammy finish. You get a gentle tannic coat and you find yourself wanting to take another drink. This is very easy to drink.&amp;#160; In fact, I just looked at the back label and they describe it as a describe it as a “drinking” wine, as opposed to something you want to sip. I think this would perfectly complement pork dishes or even turkey.&amp;#160;&amp;#160; I may have to grab another bottle or two for Thanksgiving. I can easily imagine a terrific combination of this wine with a zesty fresh cranberry sauce.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;For a bottle of wine you might find for under $10 this can’t be beat and certainly compares with more expensive wines I’ve tasted. For some it is an acquired taste. The liqueur is distilled from 130 alpine herbs, who knew there were so many. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Chartreuse comes in several varieties. The traditional is referred to as Green Chartreuse. It has an anise-like nose to it.&amp;#160; It is slightly fruity and definitely herbaly, although you would be hard pressed to identify any specific herbs. Green Chartreuse&amp;#160; is 110 proof and is best served cold, even on the rocks. Although I prefer just a cold glass so the ice doesn’t dilute the spirit. This is the bottle you will most likely find in your neighborhood liquor store, although they probably won’t have more than a bottle or two on the shelf.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Yellow Chartreuse is a little sweeter and not as strong at about 80 proof. This is very hard to find in restaurants, so if they have it, I almost always get a glass. Don’t laugh. I’ve written about wines from the Niagara-on-the-Lake region before and if you can find something to try, I strongly encourage you. One of the bottles I picked up was a 2oo4 &lt;a title=&quot;Visit Peller.com&quot; href=&quot;http://www.peller.com&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;Peller Estates&lt;/a&gt; Cabernet Sauvignon, released under their Private Reserve label.&amp;#160; &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;From the very first sip upon opening, to later in the evening there is a hint of oakiness. This is a light to medium-bodied cab. Definitely not “chewy”. However it is very smooth and balanced with a hints of dark berries and plum. The finish I would describe as a gentle smokiness with the slightest tannic touch. I served it with a pan seared T-bone steak and it held up nicely. Peller’s description mentions a slight peppery finish on their cabs, which I don’t fully pick up here. Although there is a touch of something that I would characterize as spice.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Peller is well known for their ice wines, which I enjoy and am sure to write about at some point. But their reds are quite wonderful as well and very reasonably prices, assuming you can track them down. Peller, like many Canadian wineries, can’t sell outside their province or Canada. The wine is aged for 6 months in new French oak and then another 6 months in the bottle and you can get a hint of oakiness in the finish. I find notes of berry and spice with lingering tannic finish. Actually the finish invokes an earthiness in my mind. Maybe that&#39;s the old vine talking.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;The bottle I picked up was around $14, which isn&#39;t bad considering how far the wine had to travel to reach my neighborhood shop. Sipping it puts me in the mood to serve it with rack of lamb. This is a wine you could easily drink now and certainly for another few years. I may have to grab a few more bottles to cellar to see if I&#39;m right.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;I&#39;ve not tasted a lot of malbecs so I don&#39;t have much to compare. However you would be sadly mistaken, for there are parts of Canada that produce some very fine wines indeed. One of my favorite regions is the Niagara-on-th-Lake area just north of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Still, if you can get your hands on some Jackson-Triggs I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I had an ‘05 Zin from a different winery last night that was nothing like the Miner Zin. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;If you are fortunate enough to get your hands on a bottle and pour yourself a glass the first thing you’ll notice is a rich, garnet-colored promise of a well-crafted wine. I noted hints of plums, dark cherry and chocolate with a slight peppery finish. We didn’t have much time, didn’t want to spend a lot of money and needed a place we could all agree on. Fortunately we discovered a small Asian restaurant very close to the hotel that was a very pleasant surprise.&lt;br /&gt;

The menu offered a mix of Asian cuisines with something for everyone in my family. I ordered a house special, Saffron Spicy Chicken.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Our dishes were a little slow to arrive, but only because they were piping hot and were obviously made to order. My dish teased me with huge chunks of chicken in a fiery yellow sauce with plenty of flash fried red chilies.&amp;nbsp; The first thing I noticed was the chicken. In many Asian eateries chicken entrees offer small, indifferent shreds of meat. Not here. These were large chunks of breast meat that tasted very fresh, had terrific “chicken-ness” and was moist.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The sauce was sweet with a slow, quiet burn at the end. I thought the heat&amp;nbsp; would eventually catch up with me but it never did. Every sweet bite promised bit of heat, but it never really came. Perhaps I was supposed to nibble on one of the red chilies. But I was quite happy with my dish as it was.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The cafe had an empty steam table and judging from the rest of the menu and setup, I suspect it does a very respectable lunch business.&amp;nbsp;The prices are very reasonable, the service attentive and I felt it was a very family-friendly establishment. Certainly not haute cuisine chinois, but very satisfying and everyone was happy.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I’m sure if stay close to Cafe Saffron on any future trips to Ottawa that it will merit a repeat visit.&lt;br /&gt;

I also always try to eat in at least one sushi joint as well. During a recent trip to Columbus, OH, a few students recommended &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.bluginger.biz/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;Blue Ginger Asian Bistro&lt;/a&gt; which is technically in Dublin, OH.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;At first glance you might not think much of the place, being in a strip mall, although I’ve had some very terrific food in some very rundown strip malls so I’m not one to judge a book by its cover. Inside was definitely a different story. The decor favored a modern Asian design with dark woods and brushed metal tables. A sushi bar occupied one corner.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The menu was a basic Japanese-Chinese blend with a few Vietnamese items and Thai curries tossed in for good measure. The restaurant is an &lt;em&gt;Asian&lt;/em&gt; bistro, so the mélange of cultures shouldn’t be too surprising. &lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;I started out with an appetizer of pan dried duck dumplings which were served on a bed of mixed field greens. The dumplings had a slight crisp on the outside and were served with a sweet hoisin-based sauce. I found them tasty and filling, although not especially very “ducky”. Still, the order of 6 dumplings was very filling.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;I then moved to their Triple Toro roll. I don’t see toro on sushi menus often, so I try to sample it when I can. Their offering was an avocado filled roll with toro, yellowtail and tuna draped over the top and finished off with a spicy mayo.&amp;#160; The toro melted in my mouth. The mayo brought plenty of heat on its own. I also found the roll a little salty, although interestingly not in every bite.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;Feeling confident about their toro, I next ordered a toro sashimi. I received 2 very thinly sliced pieces served too chilled for my tastes. I find if the fish is too cold some of the flavor is locked away. I suspect the toro in the roll was a little warmer, perhaps from the chef’s hands during preparation. I lingered to let the the second piece warm up and it offered up a little more flavor. Certainly not knock me over toro, but this is Central Ohio after all and I was surprised to find toro at all.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;I was just about finished when my server convinced me to try kampachi sashimi. I’m glad she did. The fish had a firm flesh like hamachi that gave way to velvety bites of the ocean. I’m very sensitive to salt but this had just the right amount to transport me to tropical beach.&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;I wrapped up the meal with a chocolate fortune cookie:&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p&gt;The total bill including tip (it was just me) was under $40.
