Mexican table grape harvest nearing its peak

“The first shipments of Mexican table grapes arrived in Nogales, AZ on May 5th and we expect to receive fresh arrivals through most of June,” says Chris DeSana with Seald Sweet International. The Mexican program spans about seven weeks and currently is the company’s largest grape program from a single country of origin. The peak of harvest is expected during the first two weeks of June.

Shipments increase 10% over last year

DeSana expects to ship a total of 780,000 cartons combined between the Hermosillo and Caborca growing regions. Last year, Seald Sweet shipped slightly over 700,000 cartons, so the expectation is for a 10 percent increase over last year.

Cold temperatures in the Hermosillo region in February have caused some fruit loss, mainly in Greens, including Perlettes and Sugraone as well as in Blacks (Summer Royals). Overall, Greens are still readily available. “With fewer Chilean Crimsons being offered in the month of May, Flame Seedless sales and movement has been excellent and is expected to continue through early next week or the peak Memorial Day pull,” added DeSana.

Rising demand for Egyptian garlic in Europe

Stars of Export is an Egyptian exporter that has specialized itself in garlic. The company is now involved in the export of dried garlic, which started in March and will last until the end of June.

“It has been a really big season for us,” says Yassin Ahmed. “Some new markets have opened up for our dried and fresh garlic. These new markets usually have garlic through the Netherlands, which has always been a country through which a lot of garlic is sold to the rest of Europe. But now importers seem to have realized it’s cheaper to buy garlic directly from Egypt.”

“This big demand of dried garlic has actually made this season a bit difficult. It’s hard to come by garlic that fits the European demands for quality. We actually weren’t quite prepared for demand to become this big. The main reason is that Chinese garlic has become too expensive. European importers are searching for alternatives, like our Egyptian garlic.”

Furthermore, when other competing countries like Spain and Mexico commence with their season, there will be more taxes in importing garlic outside Europe which will result in an uncompetitive price for the Egyptian garlic.

"The rise in demand hasn’t given way to increased competition. The market is large. There is room for everybody. Many Egyptian exporters focus on one specific market. Each market has its own unique characteristics, which means that one company may focus on Western Europe, while another may work with Russia or the Middle-East.”

“However, the Australian market has been difficult for us. There has been a ban put on transport by plane. We were forced to send our garlic by sea, which meant it took a whole 25 days to get there. We were aiming to export over 130 tons to Australia, but instead we only managed to send about 55 tot 60 tons. A lot of our customers switched over to importing garlic from Mexico.”

In this season, Stars of Export has a volume of about 600 tons of garlic. About 150 tons had to be sourced from other suppliers. However, a large part of this isn’t meant to be sent to the European market due to its high standards with regards to quality. The amount of garlic that is of lesser quality ends up on the domestic market or on second class markets like Russia and Middle-Eastern countries. While Egypt does import some Chinese garlic, the prices of it aren’t that compelling at €3.10 per kilo. Egyptian garlic right now costs somewhere between €2 to €2.40 per kilo.

The main challenge with regards to the current high demand is getting hold of garlic that is fit for export. “This week more than 500 tons of garlic was rejected. When we purchase extra garlic from suppliers, we must buy the whole batch that they’re offering us. We’re supposed to take it all. This means that not all of the garlic is good enough for us to send to our customers. Say we buy about 100 tons, then usually 20% to 30% will be good enough for Europe. We deal with this by being critical of the product. We check its quality, color and size. If it’s okay, we buy it. If not, then not. We need to refuse a lot of garlic, because in the end we don’t want to lose good customers due to a bad shipment,” concludes Yassin Ahmed.

Kenyan fruit farmers competing with imports

Fruits like oranges, grapes and apples are being bought from Kenya's neighbouring countries, especially Tanzania, creating stiff competition for Kenya's own fruit farmers in Nyeria. Farmers in high altitude areas where oranges do well, are not supplying enough of the fruit, a problem attributed to climate change.

Mr John Wambugu, an agronomist at Wambugu farm, said farmers should adopt new methods to maximise yields.

"Farmers should ensure they have enough water for their crops in instances where there is low or no rainfall and also spray their crops against pests and disease," he said.

Traders, however, said they were making good profits from the imported fruit. They said they buy a 70kg sack of oranges for Sh2,000 and sell the fruit for Sh50 a kilogramme.

Ms Margaret Wangui, a trader at Whispers Park market, said she is making huge profits from pawpaw that she buys from Meru.

"I sell a kilogramme of pawpaw for Sh70 after buying them for Sh35 a kilogramme," she said. However, supply of watermelons is poor due to the heavy rains that have been pounding the area.

S. African top fruit companies invest in technology

Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing and its parent packhouse, have invested in new technology which is set to improve their final product and reduce quality-related claims, which cost the two companies millions of rand.

The new technologies will make it possible to look inside the fruit to test elements such as the amount of sugar in the product and check for defects including internal browning, which could not — until now — be determined without cutting into each piece of fruit. The company did not disclose the amount of money it had invested in the new technology.

Tru-Cape marketing director Conrad Fick said on Thursday 19 May the newly installed Greefa 10-lane sorter can process eight pieces of fruit per second per lane at Two-a-Day in Grabouw, and was the largest in the southern Hemisphere.

"Combined with the new iFA light technology that ‘sees’ into the heart of each apple or pear that is processed, we can now deliver a better final product with fewer issues," he said.

"Our packhouses have had camera-scanning equipment — which increased productivity by 25% (and) sorted faster and more accurately than before — for a while now, and the 1GB Digital GigE camera, which captures a full, high-definition image of 1900 x 1024 pixels to make correct colour selection more efficient, while no longer new, remains current."

Fick said that as consumer tastes and demands become ever-more exacting, Tru-Cape’s packhouses’ ability to add algorithms that sort to ever-higher colour and blemish-free standards becomes essential.

He said the investment will save millions of rand as Tru-Cape will be improving productivity and returning maximum value to growers by not delivering fruit that might be rejected on arrival because of not meeting the packing specification, or of showing signs of internal damage.

مرحبا بكم.. الإستيراد والتصدير مجال ممتع وليس بالصعب تماما ويطلق علي بيع أو شراء المنتجات بشكل تجاري بين الشركات, ومما يجعل العمل في هذا المجال صعباً الفساد المنتشر في بلادنا في صورة إحتكار الكثير من السلع بواسطة عدد من التجار وبمساعدة بعض مسؤولي الحكومات ولكن لاعلينا من ذلك فيمكننا أن نبدأ صغارا ثم نتدرج لنصبح كبارا ويمكن التغلب علي جميع العقبات فلا يوجد مستحيل.

هذا المجال قد يظنه البعض مجالاً بعيداً يقتصر علي من يملكون رؤوس الأموال الكبيرة وهذا في الحقيقة معتقد خاطئ تماماً, نحن اليوم في القرن الحادي والعشرون من الزمان ولدينا تقنيات ووسائل أمان عديدة وقد تم وضع علم التجارة الإلكترونية خصيصاً للبيع والشراء عبر الانترنت دون الحاجة الي السفر بعيدا! ونشير إلي أن المعتقد السائد انه يجب علي المستورد أن يسافر بنفسه ليقوم بعملية الاستيراد هو معتقد خاطئ ويفوت علي الكثيرين فرصة إنشاء أعمال أو شركات خاصة بهم ومن ناحية أخري يعتبر هذا الأمر اليوم من الطرق التقليدية القديمة! السفر يفضل فقط في حالة اراد شخص تصنيع منتج ما بمواصفات معينة وليس مجرد الشراء, أما من يستطيع السفر لحضور المعارض ومقابلة التاجر فهذا امر شخصي لكن عبر الإنترنت يمكن المقارنة بين الكثير من الشركات – المنتجات – الأسعار في وقت قليل وهذا أمر يصعب في حالة السفر. وهناك مقالتين هامتين عن أهم موقع للإستيراد والتصدير المعروف بعلي بابا، تمكنان المستورد من التحقق من الموردين دون السفر وهما كيفية التحقق من الشركات ومصداقيتها علي موقع علي بابا و كيفية العمل علي موقع علي بابا.

أما عن عملية التصدير فهي أسهل من عملية الاستيراد إلا انك انت في موقع المورد او المصنع, ويفضل السعي وراء مجال التصدير أكثر من الإستيراد أو علي الأقل إستيراد المنتجات التي لاتصنعها دولتك إن كان لابد من الإسيراد وذلك لأنه من المعروف أن التصدير من اهم مصادر رفع الاقتصاد لأي دولة كبيرة كانت او صغيرة لان ذلك يعني انها دولة مصنعة وليست مستهلكة فقط, فكل الدول العظمي لم ترتفع إقتصاديا إلا بتصدير منتجاتها للعالم والدول التي تدار بشكل جيد تهتم بزيادة الصادرات وتقليل الواردات وبالفعل يؤثر ذلك تأثيراً إيجابياً في رفع المستوي الإقتصادي. أما الدول ذات الإقتصادات المنهكة أو تلك التي تعرف بالدول النامية تجد حجم الواردات فيها أكبر من أو ضعف حجم الصادرات.

أما في هذه المقالة التي هي بمثابة المدخل إلي مجال الإستيراد والتصدير نذكر أولا بعض النصائح الهامة, ثانيا المصطلحات الدولية الأكثر استخداما, ثالثا طرق الدفع الخاصة بهذا المجال.

بعض النصائح الهامة قبل العمل بمجال الإستيراد والتصدير

– ضع في الاعتبار قبل البدء “الشق القانوني للمسألة”

يجب عليك لكي تعمل في هذا المجال إنشاء شركة حقيقية بتراخيص كاملة تؤهلك لمزاولة هذا النشاط, وأفضل فئة للإستفسار عن هذا هم المحاسبون القانونيون الذين بإمكانهم ايضاً إنشاء الشركة نيابة عنك بأتعاب يتم الاتفاق عليها, ومن مميزات هذا الامر توفير الوقت والعناء لانهم يعلمون الخطوات والإجراءات بشكل واضح لذلك ينجزونها بشكل أسرع, وتكلفة إنشاء شركة كاملة بتراخيصها في اغلب الدول العربية يكلف ما يعادل الثلاثة آلاف دولار او اكثر او اقل علي حسب الدولة.

– قم بفتح حساب بنكي خاص بالشركات

لان التحويلات لان هذا الحساب سيرتبط كثيراً بالتخليص الجمركي ولا يجوز تحويل الاموال الي شركات او مصانع إلا من الحساب الخاص بالشركة, ثم بعد ذلك لا تشق علي نفسك باستئجار مكتب ضخم بتكلفة عالية لانك فقط في البداية ولنجاح مشروعك قد تستغرق سنتين او اكثر وهذا ينطبق علي جميع المجالات, فالنجاح السريع في غضون ايام أو شهور في عمل شريف هو أمر شاذ وليس هو المعتاد, فضع في الاعتبار العمل بسياسة النفس الطويل والصبر.

– لابأس يمكنك العمل من المنزل في البداية

مادمت تحتفظ بالمستندات الرسمية للشركة وكذلك المستندات الرسمية للشحنات التي قد يزورك احد موظفي الجمارك للإطلاع عليها, ومن الافضل مثلاً تخصيص جزء من المنزل إن امكن واستخدامه كمكتب صغير لاننا لا ننصح باستقبال عميل او موظف جمارك بالمنزل.

رابعاً: لابد من الإلمام ببعض مصطلحات التجارة الالكترونية بين الشركات والتي سنذكرها لاحقا في هذه المقالة, وكيفية تبادل الرسائل الالكترونية بطريقة إحترافية.

– حاول إيجاد مصدر للتمويل إذا لم يكن لديك

قد يمثل جزء التمويل العقبة الاكبر في طريق نجاح أعمالك, فلن تجد تاجراً يدفع لك المال مقدماً قبل أن يري السلعة امام عينيه نظراً لغياب الثقة والمصداقية في بلادنا, فالكل يخشي من ضياع ماله, وقد تكون محظوظا بوجود من يثق بك لدفع ولو جزء من ثمن الشحنة.

– لاتستورد دائماً إلا السلع التي لاتقوم دولتك بتصنيعها

لان الدول تفرض ضرائب باهظة علي المنتجات المستوردة التي يتم تصنيعها محلياً وأحياناً تمنعها, وايضاً لان ذلك يؤثر علي إقتصاد دولتك بالسلب دون أن تشعر.

– إذا أردت سلعة موجودة في الصين إبحث عن نفس السلعة في بلد أقرب

في تركيا مثلاً لانها اقرب كثيراً لبلادنا العربية ومنتجاتها اصبحت عالية الجودة واسعارها تنافس الصين وهذه حقيقة, وهذا الامر يوفر عليك الوقت والجهد والمال, فعلي سبيل المثال من حيث المدة الاستيراد من تركيا يساوي نصف او اقل من مدة الشحن من الصين والوقت في هذا المجال من اهم العوامل.

– يفضل استخدم خدمات الفحص التي تقدمها شركات عالمية

مثلاً في حالة شراء المواد الغذائية او الادوية او الاجهزة الالكترونية يمكن استخدام شركة مثل “SGS” للتأكد من جودة المنتج ومطابقته لمواصفات دولتك لان كل دولة تفرض علي المستورد مواصفات معينة فيما يتعلق بالسلع.

– قم بشحن سلعتك في حاوية في الحالات التالية

إذا كانت كمية السلعة تتعدي حجم نصف حاوية عشرين قدم او اربعين فاختر شحنها في حاوية كاملة وذلك سيوفر عليك اكثر مما لو شحنتها بالاشتراك مع سلعة اخري في حاوية من ناحية مصاريف الشحن والتفريغ في ميناء الوصول والتخزين أيضاً.

– قم بالتعاقد مع وكيل شحن داخل بلدك

هذا الوكيل يعمل مع وكيل شحن آخر في البلد الذي تود الاستيراد منه بالتالي يكون هذا الامر أأمن من ان تقوم بالتعامل مع وكيل شحن في بلد المصدر, وفي حالة حدوث أي طارئ تستطيع الوصول إليه دون عناء.

مصطلحات التعاقد الدولية في مجال الإستيراد والتصدير

في كل مجال من المجالات توجد مصطلحات متعارف عليها يستخدمها رواد هذا المجال, وكذلك في مجال التجارة الدولية هناك مصطلحات تجارية تسمي ‘Incoterms’ إختصارا لكلمة ‘International commercial Terms’ اي مصطلحات التجارة الدولية وتستخدم هذه المصطلحات في التعاقد بين البائع والمشتري, وتتمثل هذه المصطلحات في حوالي خمس عشرة مصطلح, مع ذلك هناك اربعة مصطلحات منها هي المتداولة والاكثر استخداما وهي كالآتي:

Ex work: يعني هذا المصطلح أن البائع يسلم المشتري بضاعته في المصنع.

“FOB “free on board a ship: يعني هذا المصطلح أن البائع يسلم المشتري بضاعته علي ظهر السفينة في ميناء التحميل ولايشمل هذا التعاقد كلفة الشحن.

“C&F “Cost And Freight: يعني هذا المصطلح ان البائع يسلم المشتري بضاعته في ميناء الوصول, أي ان المشتري قام بدفع تكاليف الشحن حتي وصول البضائع الي ميناء التفريغ.

“CIF “Cost Freight And Insurance: يعني هذا المصطلح تسليم البضائع في ميناء الوصول مؤمناً عليها اي انك قمت بدفع تكلفة الشحن شاملة التأمين.

طرق الدفع المتعارف عليها دوليا في مجال الإستيراد والتصدير

كذلك هناك طرق دفع متعارف عليها دوليا في هذا المجال ولكل طريقة مميزاتها وخصائصها وهذه الطرق تتم عن طريق البنوك وتتمثل في:

“TT “Telegraphic Transfer: هذا النوع هو عبارة عن عملية التحويل المقدم, فعلي حسب التفاق مع البائع يمكن تحويل دفعة مقدمة والباقي عند رؤية نسخة من المستندات المطلوبة وهذه الطريقة يفضلها التجار لانها اسرع واقل كلفة.

“L/C ” Letter Of Credit: تعرف هذه الطريقة باسم الاعتماد المستندي وهي باختصار تعامل البنوك مع بعضها من حيث إرسال واستلام الأموال, وكيفيتها ان المشتري يقوم بالذهاب الي البنك عند الرغبة في شراء منتج ما ويطلب فتح اعتماد مستندي فيقوم البنك بطلب اوراق بها مواصفات وشروط السلعة ثم يرسل طلب الي بنك المستفيد أو البائع, فيقوم بنك المستفيد بإعلام المستقيد فيطلعه علي مواصفات وشروط السلعة, ثم للبائع ان يقبل التعاقد او يرفضه.

في حالة قبول التعاقد يقوم البائع بتجهيز السلعة المتعاقد عليها ثم يقوم بشحنها ثم يرسل المستندات الي بنك المستفيد وهو نفسه البائع فيقوم البنك بالتأكد من صحتها ثم يرسلها الي بنك المشتري ثم يقوم بنك المشتري بتحرير المبلغ المطلوب لبنك المستفيد ثم يستلم المشتري المستندات لتخليص الشحنة, وهذه الطريقة افضل من حيث الامان ولكن تكلف البائع والمشتري مصاريف إضافية ولا يفضلها البائعون نظراً لبطئها.. وهناك نوعان من الاعتماد المستندي ‘Confirmed’ اي مؤكد – و ‘Irrevocable’ اي غير قابل للإلغاء او النقض.

“CAD “Cash Against Documents: تمثل هذه الطريقة الدفع مقابل المستندات اي انك حينما تستلم المستندات يقوم البنك بتحرير ثمن السلعة للبائع.

Table grapes exporting season starting in Egypt

Table grapes are one of the most widely-grown fruit crops in Egypt. It’s considered to be the second most important fruit crop after citrus. Egyptian’s geographical spread of production enables fresh sweet grapes to be available From May to July. Table grapes are grown from Alexandria in the north of Egypt to Aswan in the south. There are many varieties of table grapes produced in Egypt, like Early sweet, Superior, Thompson, Flame seedless, Crimson, and Red globe. Competition among Egyptian growers is tough. There’s always more competition every year because of the new grape plantations coming into production every year, so the only thing that keeps one ahead of others in the market is the ability of producing high quality grapes. This season, Egypt had a cold winter which was good for both the homogenized bud break and the high fertility.

This month, a new season is starting in Egypt for the main export destinations such as the European Union (UK, Netherlands, Italy…………), Russia, and Gulf region (Emirates). Grapes can be picked, packed and air freighted to markets within 60-72 hours of harvest. Shipping to the Middle East countries takes almost 48-60 hours. Egypt exports around 7% from the total volume of produced grape. In 2013, the total volume of the exported grape was around 80,000 tonnes.

Challenges for the Egyptian grape exporters in 2016

While it’s early to inform how quality of most of the fruits will turn out, it’s expected that this year’s volume and quality to be just as good if not better than in previous years. In the last season (2015), Egyptian suppliers faced political unrests which disrupted the tail-end of their shipments. This year 2016, the Egyptian presidential elections will be held on 26-27 May, virtually after one month from the beginning of the Egyptian grape exporting season. Also The Indian grape exports to Europe in 2014 are higher than the past four years which expected to affect the exports from the Egyptian grape.

Grapes are grown widely in the world. It is known that grapes go back to the Neolithic period; for example in 1996 a jug filled with wine-7000 years ago was discovered in northern Iran. In Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt other clues have been found pointing to the existence of grape cultivation and wine production. In 2007 the area cultivated globally with grape was estimated to be 708 million hectares with a total production of around 65 million tons of which 7.7 million tons were table grapes.
