Take a guided tour of the transportation or the general collection to see some of the Museum's 45,500 objects, such as a prototype for the Bombardier Innovia ART 100, a driverless rail car (1982), an iron lung once used at the Ottawa Civic Hospital (ca. 1950), and the FIU-301, the Ontario Provincial Police's first unmanned aerial vehicle (2005-2007). The fascinating stories told by artifacts present the ongoing relationships between science, technology and the transformation of Canadian society. Spaces are limited. On-site registration required the day of tours.
Event Description: Enrolling in a clinical trial can provide benefits such as access to a new treatment, the potential to help other patients, or monetary compensations in some cases. But do these benefits outweigh risks of unpredictable reactions and dangerous side effects? Are we taking advantage of the people who are willing to take these risks due to their poor health or financial situation? Are all patients selected for clinical trial truly capable of giving informed consent? Are all results from these trials, both positive and negative being reported? Do you have an opinion? Join us for drinks, discussion, and debate.
Event Description: Canada is undeniably an energy superpower. We have the 3rd largest deposit of oil, second richest deposit of uranium, produce 12% of the world's hydro electricity, and have huge untapped potential for wind and other renewable energy generation. While each of these resources has great potential, each also poses unique challenges that must be explored. With an insatiable global demand for energy, how should Canada manage these resources? How do we balance the social, environmental and economic benefits and costs associated with energy production and consumption? Canadians expect instant access to reliable power, but we also want energy that is affordable and sustainable. Can we have it all? You have an opinion? Join us for drinks, discussion, and debate.
Event Description: According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, more than 4,000 Canadians are currently awaiting an organ transplant. Over 75% of transplants come from living donors, but the demand far outweighs the supply. Some feel that an increase in cadaveric organ donation could solve the problem. However, the chances that any given transplant will succeed depend largely on the viability of the donated organ. Donors must be "as dead as necessary but as alive as possible." Organs and tissues can be retrieved only after death has been declared. But when exactly does death occur? One minute after a person is taken off life support? Three minutes? Five? When is the ideal time for removing organs without causing undue harm to the donor? Do we need to fundamentally redefine the criteria for determining time of death so we can improve transplant outcomes? Do you have an opinion? Join us for drinks, discussion, and debate.
Event Description: In 2008, Ottawa residents began discussing the possibility of changing municipal by-laws to allow raising chickens within the city. In recent years, by-laws in several Canadian cities have changed in favour of raising chickens. Some argue that any effort to sustain food sources—including raising hens for their eggs—is a basic human right. Others argue that the potential health and sanitation risks outweigh the benefits. At this Café, expect a discussion that explores all perspectives, including current by-laws, health and safety considerations for both birds and humans, and tales from those who have first-hand experience raising hens. Have you ever raised chickens, or eaten eggs laid by a local hen? What do you think—should raising chickens in the city of Ottawa be permitted or not? Join us for drinks, discussion, and debate.

Presentation by Victor Snieckus, Professor and Bader Chair at Queen’s University in Kingston, Dr. Sniekus is a world-renowned synthetic chemist with long-standing experience in solving challenging synthetic problems for pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies worldwide.

Primo Levi, a trained chemist became a major literary figure in Italy. Having spent a year in Auschwitz, he wrote a number of highly praised memoirs. His book of short stories, The Periodic Table, published in 1975 is a collection of short pieces featuring episodes from Levi’s life, all related in some way to one of the chemical elements. At an event organised by the London’s Royal Institution on October 19, 2006, it was voted the best science book ever written.

To mark the International Year of Chemistry, the Canada Science and Technology Museum invites you to a reading, interpretation and dialogue based on this famous book.
