As the polls close in Massachusetts lets take a minute to stop reading exit polls and look back on all of the hard work the College Republicans at Catholic University have put into this special election.

Four months ago, it seemed impossible to wrestle the Senate seat once filled by the late Ted Kennedy from the control of democrats. As this election started to take shape, and the College Republicans saw the inadequacy of Martha Coakley, and the potential in Scott Brown, the CR Machine intervened in the race. It started with the participation of some members in Scott Brown’s money bomb.

Following the money bomb we noticed a trend in Scott Brown’s polling and five of our members new and old decided it was time for them to become foot soldiers for Scott Brown. The Holyoke Massacre was born. Led by CUA Alumnus Amanda Kohut who was later joined by another Alumnus Matt Purple; these two veterans teamed up with three fresh faces to College Republicans, Andrea Mancuso, Gina McLaughlin and Peter Rescigno. As they arrived in Massachsetts they were sent into enemy territory with one mission, getting out the vote. As the day went on news arrived back on campus that the response they were getting was promising and that we would receive a report from the ground by days end.

That report came in the form of a video by Amanda Kohut. This video was then launched nationally on The Daily Caller and Red Mass and was retweeted several times. Within 24 hours it had over one hundred views. Immediately following the Holyoke Massacre Matt Purple wrote a piece for the Daily Caller recalling his experience in Massachusetts. The national coverage and success of the Holyoke Massacre led the College Republicans on campus to mobilize a Phonebomb for Scott Brown last night at the RNC. Yet again another successful event led to more media coverage.

As you sit back tonight and watch the results come in, remember that some of you were on the ground fighting for the results you are seeing, and others volunteered to make phone calls and help get out the vote. Hopefully, in a few hours we can call Scott Brown, Senator-Elect.

So fellow College Republicans, win or lose that’s a job well done.

A Message from Chairman XIV,

Danielle Beck, Plymouth,MA
Fellow College Republicans,

There are many seemingly convincing arguments against campaigning for
Massachusetts Republican Scott Brown. Monday is a holiday. You might
freeze to death on your walk to the Metro. Phone banking is
awkward, not to mention the fact that it’s MASSACHUSETTS and other
than Mitt Romney, the last time a Republican was victorious oil lamps
could very well have been in fashion…

In response to the aforementioned lame excuses, here are my four
reasons to phone bank for Scott Brown (in no particular order):

4. Work for a Winner
After years of working on various Republican campaigns, the Catholic
University College Republicans had the privilege of working for two
big winners this year. We hit the ground for Bob McDonnell in Virginia
ten months before the election. In New Jersey we contacted over 50,000
voters for Chris Christie. Our stellar campaigning won us the only
chapter-mention at the National CRNC meeting earlier this year, but
the campaigning doesn’t have to end just because it’s spring semester.
I don’t know about you, but I would love to be able to say I worked on
three winning Republican campaigns in one school year. Talk about
record-breaking.

3. Be a Part of Historic Change
If you’re like me, you probably refresh Drudge Report on both your
laptop and Blackberry at least five times an hour. If not, check the
recent headlines. Scott Brown v. Martha Coakley received little to no
attention by the national media until last week. Now there are several
headlines on Drudge featuring Brown. This race is close. Those of you
who aren’t from MA might equate the existence of elected Republican
officials to the existence of wooly mammoths or triceratops, but I
promise you that isn’t true. Scott Brown signs outnumber Martha
Coakley signs 10 to 1 on Cape Cod. Brown needs all the help he can
get, including yours.

2. Healthcare Sucks
The healthcare bill is a scary, scary thing. Last semester I worked
for the HELP committee. Let me tell you, the amendments of the Senate
bill fill four 6.5 inch binders. I couldn’t even carry half of the
bill if I wanted to. Our economy is going to break under the weight of
this monstrosity. A government option and an expansion of HHS will not
help our country. Brown could be lucky #41 for Republicans. His seat
could change the future of healthcare. Our generation is the one
that’s going to be cleaning up the mess the Democrats are making.
Let’s work to stop the Dems now, not in 10 years.

1. Make Some Great Friends
If reasons 2-4 aren’t enough to convince you, come for the fun of it.
Phone banking might seem awkward, especially if you’ve never done it
before. I promise you the benefits outweigh being hung up on every
once in a while. In 3 hours not only will you convince people to vote
for the right candidate; you’ll also have a great time goofing off and
making some fantastic friends.

*Be sure to check out the details for our phonebomb for Scott Brown.*

For those of us who remained on campus this weekend, while our comrades went door to door during the Holyoke Massacre we commend their efforts. But the fight continues this Monday, January 18 with our PHONEBOMB for Scott Brown. Be sure too arrive at the CUA metro by 4:30 on Monday. If you cannot make it at that time you can meet us at the RNC. It is located right off of the Capitol South Metro Stop. We look foward to seeing you all at the phone bank, enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Smith and Members of the College Republicans,

Effective 8:15pm on the 9th of December,2009 I formally resign as Vice Chairman of the College Republicans at The Catholic University of America. As you well know I will be interning in London during the Spring 2010 semester and will therefore be unable to perform the duties vested in the office of the Vice Chairman.

The decision to study abroad was not taken lightly, and it is with a heavy heart that I step down from this position. The College Republicans play a crucial role in the CUA campus community and have had a defining influence upon my time here. CR’s was the first organization I joined upon arriving at Catholic and the first thing that allowed me to realize I had made the right choice for my college education. I truly cannot imagine college without this group. I have made some of the best friends I have ever known here, gotten incredible job opportunities, celebrated victories, and learned grace in defeat. My hope is that each and every one of you will have access to the same, if not greater opportunities than I had within College Republicans.

In closing I just wanted to say thank you to each and every member of College Republicans (past and present) for the chance to serve as Vice Chairman. I look forward to following your next semester from overseas and getting involved when I return. Once a CR always a CR. Enjoy your time with the club, it goes by way to fast and get ready to kick ass in 2010. Thank you once again.

Sincerely,

Ryan D. Winn

_____

Ryan Winn

Vice Chairman

College Republicans at Catholic University

10/1/09

In the September 25th edition of The Tower, Managing Editor Michael Oliva ran an editorial criticizing the College Republicans for hosting a Pig Roast tailgate for Residence Life’s Southside Showdown. Although as an organization we can appreciate Mr. Oliva’s dedication to fiscal responsibility, there was a major lack of facts in his piece. First, this event attracted nearly 300 participants resulting in a cost of just under $10 per person making the Southside Showdown sponsored by the College Republicans one of the most financially efficient events SFAB has funded this year. Furthermore the pig roast brought a number of CUA alumni as well as the newly elected National Chairman of the College Republican National Committee Zach Howell, and members of the DC Federation of College Republicans to CUA’s campus.

Another fact omitted from the previous article was the lengths the CR’s went to educate the campus community about the figures of the 2009 stimulus bill and the massive spending undertaken by the Democratic Leadership in Congress. Information was distributed regarding the actual projects funded in the stimulus as well as information on how to get involved to elect candidates who disagree with wasteful government spending on both the state and national levels. Lastly it also prudent to note that the College Republicans have been among the most active groups on campus this semester and the vast majority of our events (some of which Mr. Oliva was himself a participant in previous years) are entirely self-sufficient with no funding from the Student Activity and Club Sports Fee courtesy of SFAB.

Why might you ask did Mr. Oliva choose not to mention these facts in his piece? Simply put Mike was not at our event and is therefore writing about the “Cut the Pork” BBQ without any first hand knowledge of the event itself. So before you decide to call out a group in the editorial page Mr. Oliva please get your facts straight. The shirking of your journalistic responsibility is far more hypocritical than any BBQ ever could be and I encourage you to get involved should you have ideas on how to better spend the fund allocated by SFAB.

Tonight I attended a “Modern Media Panel” hosted by CUA’s College Republicans. The Panel featured leaders of the Republican Party who maintained active uses of New Media. It was really interesting to hear what people at the fore-front of conservative politics think about New Media and its role in society. All the members of the panel were extremely enthusiastic about New Media devices such as facebook and twitter as essential parts of the political process. This was interesting because I think New Media has long been considered the tool of liberal politicians (particularly in the wake of Barack Obama’s election) and many would suggest that conservative politics have lagged behind significantly. I was able to ask the members of the panel about this observation, and most agreed that there has indeed been a gap between conservative and liberal usership in the past, but they all seemed to think that the divide is quickly narrowing. Thus, it was encouraging to see and hear that New Media is becoming a legitimate focus on both sides of the aisle. It will be interesting to see how different the New Media presence of each party is by the next presidential election.
