Wine is one of the most widely loved beverages in the world. There is a variety of different wines to choose from, from all different areas and of all different flavors. You certainly are never lacking in choice when you go to the wine or liquor store to pick out a bottle of vino. There are so many reasons why people love wine. Some enjoy it when entertaining while others like to have a glass in the tub when they want to relax at the end of the day.

Wine is a great beverage to have around the home, also for cooking purposes. There are some lovely dishes that call for wine as one of the ingredients so it is always nice to have some handy. There are different types of wines and categories including red and white wine as the two main favorites.

Zinfandel Wines

The Zinfandel wines are one of the most popular types of wine. It is the quality and yet affordable price of these wines which make them so appealing to many people. The taste of the wines can be different depending on where they were produced but there is one distinct characteristic that is true with all Zinfandel wines and that is that the taste is subtly sweet.

Zinfandel wine varieties are known for having a lot of flavor but never overpowering. The taste is subtle enough so while it is full bodied it is also not too much for your mouth to handle. Because of this, the Zinfandel wines are suitable for many different occasions. Whether you are having some girls over to have a glass or two of wine and hang socially or you are holding a business meeting the Zinfandel wines work great.

The Grape Character

It is the grape character which really makes the Zinfandel wines just as with other types. In this case, the grape is thought to have originated somewhere in Italy. In particular it was the Apulia region although this cannot be proven absolutely. There has been some confusion over the actual identity of the Zinfandel wines and where the name came from. The story behind these wines is really provocative and interesting.

They are also not as pricey as some of the other wines so you don’t have to worry about putting a dent in your checkbook even if you are buying for a large group of people.

A lot of people choose to have Zinfandel wines served at their wedding for the same reason. People still enjoy the taste of the wine and it is not cheap wine in any way. At the same time you are not buying Dom Perignon where you are going to end up spending hundreds to thousands of dollars to get just a few bottles of wine.

The white Zinfandel wines are especially popular. If you are interested in buying some of the Zinfandel wine you can take a look around your local wineries and see what they have to offer. Another idea is to go into a winery that allows you to make your own wine and go about it that way. Of course you will want to spend some time researching first and tasting different wines so you can figure out what you like and what you don’t.

This way when you are in there making your own wine you can really mix and match between the different ingredients and create a wine that you actually enjoy.

It is easy to see what an amazing story lays behind these wines and why they are so popular. People all around the world enjoy the Zinfandel wine varieties and it is not too hard to see why.

Well, if you can, you're not alone: feeling overwhelmed seems to go hand-in-hand with motherhood. And, as much as I wish I could tell you an easy solution to the problem of emotional and physical overload, easy fixes do not really exist.

When asked, What currently overwhelms you most?

Here’s what two moms said:

Sarah: Coming home from work to a dog that needs a walk, a kid who needs attention and after a hard day, breakfast dishes that still need to be put in a dishwasher that still has clean dishes in it, a work call that quickly needs to be returned before I’m truly done, grocery bags that have just ripped on the way up the steps and dinner that needs to be cooked…and then the dog is suddenly choking on a Barbie head while my hands are full with raw chicken. In other words: 6 pm.

Alicia: I think it’s having so many responsibilities to juggle. It seems like so many people are relying on me for so many things:

• My employers for all my work-related responsibilities.
• My kids for food/clothing/shelter/school/social activities.
• My husband for food/shelter/running the household/social activities/emotional support.
• My extended family for keeping in touch/visiting/remembering birthdays.
• My babysitters for payment/keeping to a regular schedule/support finding new jobs/etc.
• My friends can even feel like a responsibility – keeping in touch, maintaining relationships, etc.

The fear of dropping the ball on something is constant, because there are always so many balls in the air.

Can you relate?

Well, if you can, you’re not alone: feeling overwhelmed seems to go hand-in-hand with motherhood. And, as much as I wish I could tell you an easy solution to the problem of emotional and physical overload, easy fixes do not really exist.

And yet you can make changes that will impact how you feel day to day.

You can choose to:

1. Figure out what makes you feel overwrought and/or defeated.
2. Make changes when changes can be made.
3. Accept and let go of the reins when things happen that are beyond your control.

First, Ask Yourself: What in my current life makes me feel overwhelmed? Is it something you can do something about?

If it is, TAKE ACTION and MAKE A CHANGE

For example, Alicia felt overwhelmed because she had too many responsibilities and feared ‘dropping the ball on something’. But the number of balls you juggle is often, or sometimes in part, a choice. Instead of living in fear of dropping a ball, Alicia could choose to put a few non-essential balls down, such as finding new jobs for babysitters, remembering birthdays, visiting extended family, etc. You – the mom – need to be ruthless when you determine your priorities.

You must frequently ask yourself: What is essential for my own and my family’s well-being?

If what you are doing or thinking of doing is not on your top priority list, consider it a non-essential and let go of it, at least for the time being.

Second, if what’s making you overwhelmed is something you cannot control, acceptance is the key to get through the moment.

For example, Sarah felt overwhelmed because, all of a sudden, everything went wrong. If your grocery bags break, your child is clingy, a business call needs to be made, and your dog is choking on a doll head, you really have only 3 choices:

1. Start screaming, crying or ‘losing it’ in some way.
2. Throw up your arms and laugh (while removing the doll’s head from your dog’s throat…which Sarah did, but she said laughter was very far from her mind).
3. Accept your momentary powerlessness.

Life gets overwhelming at times for all moms. In those times acceptance with a shrug, smile, laugh or sigh is the key to serenity.

Late afternoon meetings that last into the dinner hour are annoying. Your schedule is interrupted and dinner can become a challenge. What's for dinner? This article answers the question and is a satisfying, tasty close to a busy day.

I hate dinner time meetings and try to avoid them. Tonight I’m going to a church meeting and it starts at 5:30 p.m. Unfortunately, I get so hungry my stomach starts to growl. If the meeting lasts longer than an hour, I’m leaving and heading home for dinner with my husband.

As I lingered over coffee this morning, I considered my dinner possibilities. Swedish meatballs were one idea, but I didn’t feel like rolling meatballs at the crack of dawn. Other meal ideas were also rejected. Vegetable soup seemed like the easiest solution and I started it right away.

Most of the ingredients, including the ham, were leftovers. I always have chicken broth, the base of the soup, and a bag of frozen Italian green and yellow beans. There was an open box of cut spaghetti on the pantry shelf. If I added the spaghetti to the soup in the morning, it would be mushy by evening, so I cooked it, rinsed it with cold water, and stashed it in the refrigerator.

You almost need a miner’s lamp to see ito my chest freezer, but I found a bag of sliced French bread on the bottom. Ah ha! This would be the basis of my Parmesan crostini. All in all, my “instant” dinner was shaping up nicely. The soup was a meal in a bowl, the crostini a crunchy companion to it, and we would have coffee ice cream for dessert.

Take my word for it, this is a delicious and filling meal. The smoky ham infuses the soup with flavor, the vegetables and ketchup add color, and the cut spaghetti will make everyone happy. Here is my original recipe for Italian Ham and Vegetable Soup with Parmesan Crostini.

Ingredients

2 cups extra lean ham, cut into small cubes

32-ounce carton lower sodium chicken broth

1 small or medium yellow onion, chopped (or 2 tablespoons dried onions)

1 rib celery, diced

1 cup petite carrots

1 cup frozen Italian green and yellow beans (or cut green beans)

5 baby Dutch yellow potatoes, cut into small chunks

2 tablespoons tomato paste

2 tablespoons ketchup

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon dried basil leaves

Salt and pepper to taste (Ham is salty so I didn’t add any extra.)

1 cup cut spaghetti

1 tablespoon extra light olive oil

1 loaf French bread, sliced

Shredded Parmesan cheese

Method

Place liner in slow cooker. Add ham, chicken stock, onions, celery, carrots, green and yellow beans, potatoes, tomato paste, ketchup and seasonings. Cover, set on low, and cook for 6-8 hours. Cook cut spaghetti according to package directions until it is al dente. Rinse in cold water and coat with olive oil. A half hour before serving, add cooked spaghetti to soup and re-cover. Spread French bread with butter and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Broil until the cheese buggles and edges of crostini start to brown. (I use a toaster oven for this.) Ladle soup into bowls and serve with crostini. Makes 6-8 servings.

There are a lot of different varieties of wine to choose from. That is one of the main reasons that wine is such a popular beverage. People all around the world drink wine and wine has been around for ages. It is even believed that in the days BC there was wine and it was used more for religious purposes then.

Today it is used more often for entertainment purposes as well as a way to relax. How many of us have unwound at the end of a long day with a nice hot bubble bath and glass of wine? No matter what your reasons for drinking it may be, if you love wine then you should take the time to learn more about it. The majority of people who drink wine are actually not educated on it at all.

Of all the different wines you could try, the Shiraz wines are considered to be really something special. There is just something delightful about them and pretty much everyone that tries these wines thinks the same thing. If you have not tried Shiraz wines before you are really missing out and at least you can take time to learn more about them to see if you would find them appealing.

What Is It?

So what exactly is Shiraz wine you may ask? This is one of the 8 major types of red wine and by far one of the most popular. People enjoy the Shiraz wines because of their full bodied taste and sensual aroma. These are thick, luxurious red wines that are not too dry and are perfect with a variety of food pairings. You will often note a long lineup of Shiraz wines if you are ever out dining at any fine restaurant.

Typically they taste of wild black fruit and some have toffee notes present. These can be very subtle and hard to detect but if you are a connoisseur of wines you should be able to tell easily enough. These are varieties of hearty and spicy reds so if you are looking for a more subtle wine then this is not going to be the right choice for you. One example of a divine food pairing with the Shiraz wines would be rib eye steak. These wines can handle being paired with a large, heavy meal and they will not take over the meal nor will they fade away.

Pretty much with any meat these wines will pair up well. The most common place these wines are grown from is California and Australia. These are some of the most populous areas for wineries in the world so this is really not surprising. In terms of cost of the Shiraz wines it all depends on the particular bottle you choose upon. Of course the older bottle of wine you purchase the more it is going to cost you.

There is also the option of making your own Shiraz wines and you will just need to get the right ingredients and equipment. It can be a costly procedure to start making your own wine at home, especially if you want to make large quantities of it for instance to start selling out to other people. A better option may be to go into a local winery and have them work with you to make your own Shiraz wines. Not only will you have all the equipment and ingredients on hand there and ready to go, saving you money out of your own pocket, but also you will have an expert wine maker there who can teach you the process of making wine. This will come in especially handy if you have never done this before.

Everyone has their own different reasons for enjoying wine but the majority of people use it in one way or another. If you want to purchase some ICBO wines and head out to the store, if you are not educated you are probably going to be more than just a bit overwhelmed.

Wine is an alcoholic beverage that is loved all around the world. This really comes as no surprise, as there are so many different uses for wine. Some people enjoy a nice glass of wine after a hard day’s work. Relaxing in the tub has never been so nice than when you have a glass of Merlot or Chardonnay. Other people use wine for entertainment. You hardly ever see a wedding where there is not at least one variety of wine being served, ICBO wines or other.

Everyone has their own different reasons for enjoying wine but the majority of people use it in one way or another. If you want to purchase some ICBO wines and head out to the store, if you are not educated you are probably going to be more than just a bit overwhelmed.

There are literally hundreds of different wines to choose from. There are red wines, white wines and rose. There are different brands, years, prices and it can definitely be quite confusing. The most important step really, above all else, is to decide where you actually want to get your wine from.

You really want to make sure you choose a spot that is going to offer a large selection of wine. This way you have the most to choose from and as long as you know what you are looking for before heading in, you should not have any problems at all.

How To Choose

Whether you are shopping for ICBO wines or any other type you need to figure out what the purpose of the wine is before you can decide on any ICBO wines. For instance you may be following a recipe that calls for wine and in that case there is probably a particular wine specified. In another case you may be entertaining guests on the weekend and are making a delicious meal but are not sure which wines would pair well.

This is where the research comes in because even learning the simplest things can help you make the right decision on which wines are going to be most suitable. For instance if you were serving steak, beef or any other meat you would probably want to stick with a hearty red wine. Your goal is to choose a wine that is not going to overpower the meal but which is going to stand right up there with it. If you were to serve a white or rose wine with a steak dish, you would barely be able to taste the flavor of the wine over the potency of the meal.

On the other hand if you were serving something light like soup and salad or let’s say you were having guests over during the day, a nice light wine would most likely be more suitable. These are the types of things you need to have figured out before you can choose the right ICBO wines.

If you are really interested in taking the whole wine thing seriously one of the best things you can do is take a class or course that focuses on just this. You can learn more about the different types of wine, where they come from, how they are made and so on. It can be extremely helpful and you will be amazed at how much easier it is to head to your local winery and find ICBO wines or any other sort. Now you will not have to go out and be in awe of the massive selection of ICBO wines staring back at you and have no idea which to choose.

Wine is a delicious beverage and whether you use it to entertain or for yourself it is good to know where you stand and which wines you prefer.

This bonding is a great way to find solutions to problems, discuss parenting tips, or simply vent! Below is a list of some of the moms groups in Arlington, VA and surrounding areas.

Mom’s Club of South Arlington:
The Arlington-South chapter of the International MOMS club (Mothers Offering Mothers Support) meets during the day when at home mothers most need support. We believe being a mother shouldn’t isolate you, so mothers can bring their children with them to all our activities. Any age children are welcome.

Mothers of North Arlington:
MONA is a local support group for mothers who primarily stay at home with their children, including those who have home-based businesses or work part-time but are home with their children during the day. Membership in MONA is limited to the following zip codes: 22201; 22203; 22205; 22207; 22209; 22213.

Joy Troupe:
Joy Troupe all about story hours, home play dates, music and dance activities, and baby appropriate outings. They believe in the power of the mommy network. The purpose of this group is to get together in person and to connect, network, and make new friends.

No Drama Mamas of VA:
No Drama Mamas is a social group geared toward stay-at-home moms and their children of all ages. However, working mothers and their kids are more than welcome. While we have some weekend events for moms and their kids, most of our calendar focuses on weekday events.

Natural Parents of Arlington:
Meet other stay-at-home parents who don’t take the easy way out of parenting. We recognize that there are different parenting methods, but we choose the ones that feel the most natural… whether baby-wearing, breastfeeding, or cosleeping. We are looking for people to share information, experiences, and different viewpoints. A support system that open minded, non judgmental moms will enjoy and benefit from. With involved members and a very active calendar, we hope you will find the encouragement, advice and support you’re looking for. Our activities are geared toward 2 to 5 year olds and will be held in Centreville, Fairfax, Clifton, Herndon/Reston and Vienna.

I’m relatively new to the Arlington area, and a semi-new mom to a 16-month-old girl. I’m constantly looking for ways to keep my daughter entertained and me sane. My blog follows me on the journey to go out and play in Arlington, VA! http://gettingoutinarlington.wordpress.com/

Red wine is perhaps the most favorite wine worldwide. All red wines are processed from red or black grapes. The color of the wine is derived mainly due to a process known as maceration which is done after allowing the grapes juice to ferment along with the grape skin. The aroma and flavor depends on a lot of factors which include the country and region where the grapes are grown, the climatic condition under which the grapes are grown and harvested, the ripeness of the grapes, the soil condition where the grapes were grown and the vinification procedure.

Red wines are much more complex than white or sparkling wine. They have distinctive aroma and flavor making them the most compatible wines even amongst first time wine drinkers. The majority of grapes are grown in Europe and USA. In Europe the popular red wine producing areas include Beaujolais, Bordeaux, Bourgogne, Loire and Rhone regions of France. In USA red grapes are predominantly grown in the region of California, Oregon, and New York.

The most common types of red wine grapes are:

Cabernet Sauvignon (which is pronounced as cab-er-NAY SO-vin-yon)
These red grapes are mainly grown in the region of Bordeaux France. It is regarded as the noblest grape of all the grape varieties. The wine produced from these grapes tastes well with aging. It has an intense aroma and flavor along with a dark purple color. This is a type of dry wine and can be used as blender along with other types like the Merlot or the Shiraz.

Sangiovese (which is pronounced as san-geeo-VEHS-eh)
This is the signature wine of Italy itself. The grapes are grown in the regions of Tuscany and Chianti regions. A good wine from these grapes has a very beautiful and a complex color and aroma. This is often blended with Cabernet wines.

Pinot Noir (which is pronounced as PEE-no NWA)
This is perhaps the most food compatible red wine. This goes well along with fish and red meat. The grapes for this wine are basically grown in the regions of California and Oregon. In Europe the grapes are grown in the region of Burgundy. The wine has a very delicious flavor and is a bit sweeter.

Merlot (which is pronounced as mur-LO)
This wine has become very famous due to its soft mellow taste. This is a very compatible red wine even for the first time wine tasters. Merlot has varied flavors of either plum, cherry or blackberry

When I was young-no older than 10-I remember thinking that all of time lay ahead of me. I don’t know what I did with it, except wonder how I could speed it up, so I could get on with “real life,” even though I had this feeling, even then, that real life was probably marked by its share of hazards. A part of me always hung back. I didn’t like surprises and I certainly didn’t see any value in taking unnecessary risks.

My third son, Tommy, is a lot like that.

A couple years ago, when he was 10, he was invited to a friend’s house for a sleep-over and a chance to ride go-carts and play paint ball, he was thrilled. But within minutes, he was having second thoughts.

“How fast do you think the cars go?” he asked me. I told him I wasn’t sure. “But if they let 10 year olds like you ride them, I’m pretty sure they don’t go THAT fast,” I said.

But then he began to worry about getting one of the fastest cars and if that happened, how would he slow it down? I assured him that that probably wouldn’t happen. He then moved from apprehension of the go-carts to his fear of being hit by the paintballs.

“It might really hurt, mom,” he said. “What happens if it makes me feel like crying? In front of my friends?”

I then told him about the first time I dove off the high board one summer. How I stood there for over an hour, looking down at the water below, my hands clutched in a tight fist over my head, my heart beating wildly as I tried to psyche myself into it. The kids waiting in line at the bottom of the diving board’s ladder heckled me, cackling like a chicken and urging me to “Just dive already!” The lifeguards stood on one edge of the deep end, encouraging me that it wouldn’t hurt, that I’d be alright and that all I had to do was fall and let gravity do the rest.

“Did you finally dive?” my son asked. “Yep. And the lifeguards were right. It didn’t hurt and I was totally fine afterwards. In fact, I did it again, right away, and wondered why it took me so long to get the nerve up to do it in the first place,” I told him.

I then shared what my dad used to ask me whenever I was facing something new and perhaps, from the limited viewpoint of my age at any time, really scary-like diving off the high board, changing jobs or asking for a raise: What’s the worst thing that could happen? After that, my dad would ask, “Is this going to be that big of a deal 10 years from now? And when you look back at it, will you regret not even trying it?

I then told my son, “Ten years from now you’re not even going to remember the kid who invited you to the slumber party, but you might remember how glad you were that you got the nerve up to try the go-carts.” I then added one of the only Chinese sayings I know: Go straight to the heart of danger and there you will find safety.

This was some of my best stuff, I thought.

But 60 seconds later, my story of bravery and all my great advice was totally forgotten as he returned to the subject of surviving the go-carts. I kept trying to push for a good time, while he continued to try to tell me, in so many words, that he was absolutely petrified.

And finally, I saw him as I was, perched on the edge of that high dive-puny and trembling, praying I wouldn’t die or make a fool out of myself. He was imagining himself in the middle of a racetrack, panicked, about to go into a death-spin that would crash him the guardrail. He’d be embarrassed and humiliated in front of his friends. He felt he might die.

No amount of reasoning with him could get him to change his mind: He was not going. It was time for me to give up.

“I just don’t like to do things unless I know what’s going to happen,” he said, quietly. “I want to know things for sure. I want to know all about God and whether or you’re going to get sick with cancer.” And then he paused. “I want to know everything that’s going to happen to me, too.”

How do you tell a 10-year old that part of growing up is learning how to live with not knowing-and that after a while, not knowing doesn’t seem so bad. And even when bad things happen, you get through them and start to wonder if it’s better, in fact, to not know everything. As I tried to explain all this, he looked at me trying to understand what in the world I was saying.

I suppose it didn’t make sense to someone only 10 years old whose entire life still remained to be seen. I kissed him good night, with a heavy sigh and a prayer that one day, he would understand all this.

As I was closing his door, I heard him call my name once more. As I turned around, barely able to see him in the darkness, he said, “You’re so lucky.”

“Lucky? What makes you say that, bud?”

“Because you’re a grown-up and you’ve already made it through all this stuff.”

What could be better than walking into your kitchen to a pot full of delicious Soup, Stew, or Chili? The fact that it has been simmering for hours in your slow cooker or crockpot! Try this classic French Onion Soup, Italian Sausage Vegetable Stew or a Pork With Beans Chili Verde. All are delicious and easy!

A CLASSIC – FRENCH ONION SOUP
1/4 cup butter
3 large yellow onions, sliced
1 cup dry white cooking wine
3 can (approx. 14-oz each) beef (or chicken) broth
1/2 tsp thyme
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
4 thick slices French bread, toasted
4 oz shredded Swiss cheese
Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish, if desired

In a large skillet, over high heat, melt the butter; add the onions and cook, stirring, for 15 minutes or until the onions are lightly browned. Stir in the wine.

In a slow cooker or crockpot, combine the onion mixture from the skillet with the broth, thyme, salt, and Worcestershire sauce. Place lid on cooker and cook for 4 to 5 hours on low setting.

To serve, ladle the soup into individual serving bowls, top with one of the toasted bread slices and the cheese. Garnish with the thyme or parsley, if desired.

ITALIAN SAUSAGE AND VEGETABLE STEW
1 lb Italian sausage, cut into bite-size pieces
1 pkg (16-oz) frozen vegetable mix of onion, and colorful bell peppers
1 can (14.5-oz) diced Italian-style tomatoes
2 medium zucchini, sliced
1 jar (4.5-oz) sliced mushrooms, drained
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 tbsp tomato paste
1/4 tsp basil

Brown the sausage in a large skillet; drain.

Add the sausage to a slow cooker or crockpot along with the frozen vegetables, tomatoes with the juice, zucchini, mushrooms, and garlic. Place lid on cooker and cook on low setting for around 4 hours until zucchini is tender.

Stir the basil into the tomato paste; stir mixture into the other ingredients in the cooker. Replace the lid and cook another 30 to 45 minutes until the juices have thickened.

Yield: 6 cups

Note: Goes great with Italian or Garlic Bread.

PORK WITH BEANS CHILI VERDE
3/4 to 1 lb boneless lean pork, cut into 1-inch cubes
1 can (15-oz) Great Northern Beans
1 large onion, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced
6 garlic cloves, chopped
1 lb tomatillos, coarsely chopped
1 can (14 to 15-oz) chicken broth
1 can (4-oz) diced mild green chilies
1 tsp ground cumin
1/2 cup lightly packed fresh cilantro, chopped
Sour cream for serving

Spray a large nonstick skillet with nonstick cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat. Add the pork and cook until browned on all sides.

In a slow cooker or crockpot combine the cooked pork with the beans, onion, garlic, tomatillos, chicken broth, green chilies, and ground cumin; place lid on cooker and cook for 3 to 4 hours on high. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Gently press the meat against the side of the cooker with a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to shred. Reduce the heat of the cooker to low. Stir the cilantro into the cooker and cook for 10 minutes on low.

Serve with the sour cream.

Yield: 4 servings.

Enjoy!

Syrah is perhaps best known for the fabulous wines that it produces. Most commonly, it is used to make a very dry red table wine that can be either blended or varietal, depending on the preference and situation.

The Syrah is a type of grape that is known to produce the world’s most powerful red wines. Wines made from this grape are some of the world’s most popular; it’s the 7th most grown grape in the entire world, and it’s because it is very useful in many ways. Syrah is perhaps best known for the fabulous wines that it produces. Most commonly, it is used to make a very dry red table wine that can be either blended or varietal, depending on the preference and situation. When it comes to syrah wines, there are four main uses that are most common.

The first wines are Varietal Shiraz. This style of wine is known as Hermitage wine and is very common in either Rhone or Australian Shiraz. Syrah can also be blended into a very small amount of Viognier, a type of grape. This style of wine is called Côte-Rôtie and is commonly found in Rhone. In another type of syrah wine, syrah is used as what’s called a “blending component” in Cabernet Sauvignon, and it is then blended in Australia, where it’s branded with the name of Shiraz-Cabernet. And last but not least of the syrah wines, there is the Grenache and Mourvedre. Syrah is used as a minor blending component and the wine is then blended using a traditional style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape; the blend is most commonly known as GSM in Australia.

Syrah is also used in small amounts in many other, non-syrah wines. Rose wine, Port wine, sparking red wine and fortified wine are all examples of wines that can be blended using small amounts of syrah grapes. This is interesting because typical Australian Shiraz is supposed to have some sweetness, but many Australian winemakers choose to include syrah as well to add. In fact, many choose instead to ignore the Australian norm and make these wines on their own – the full-bodied sparkling Shiraz wine that is then produced is dry and contains complexity and earthy notes. Like some other wines, syrah wines truly taste their best when they are allowed to age for a time. In fact this aging process can last up to 15 years or more. Its recommended wine serving temperature is around 65°F.

Syrah wines are noted for being full-bodied and have a very powerful flavor. Because they can be used in so many different ways, there is a very wide range of flavors. It all depends on things like where it was grown, the condition and type of the soil it was grown in and countless other factors that can range from the weather one year to how a specific winemaker chooses to lay out his vines. There is no typical aroma for syrah wines; in fact, many people not everything from berries to black pepper to espresso and even chocolate.

Syrah wine bottles can be a bit hard to decipher, as most wines in Australia are labeled as Shiraz. It’s European wines that get labeled as syrah wines. And in other countries, it’s even harder to decipher became the labels differ there, too. They are able to choose the label based on their own personal judgment. Most often wines that get labeled as syrah wines are the ones that have a taste that’s similar to most Northern Rhône red wines. Syrah wines are known for many things: they have a lot of flavor and their tastes can vary greatly. They go along well with most meals that one wishes to have them in, making them an ideal wine for most who like their dry tastes.

I saw her at the mall the other day. You know…the woman with perfectly coiffed hair, a size four waist, and clothes with labels that do not come from Target, Wal Mart or TJ Maxx. I couldn’t stop myself from staring as she browsed the housewares department with her kiddos all in a row. If I was a betting woman, I would say her nails had recently been manicured, her hair freshly blown-out and that her handbag cost more than we spend on groceries in a month (and with a family of six, that says something.) I allowed myself to get lost in the moment and travel to the land of “if only.” If only I made it a priority to get my hair done every month… If only I spent money on my clothes instead of on things for the house…If only I sucked it up and wore what looked great instead of what is most comfortable and most stain resistant…

I stood completely still, watching, for what seemed like hours. I couldn’t stop looking at her beautiful skin, perfect makeup, and fit body. She couldn’t be much younger than me, I mused. She had three kids trailing along behind her-behaving wonderfully, I might add-and yet she had it all together.

I had a silent debate with myself as I gawked at her. I bantered with my alter ego back and forth about what she was like; snobby, nice, shy, outgoing, caring, aloof. I made terrific assumptions about what her husband did for a living, what her house looked like, and in which neighborhood she lived. I imagined when she left she would drive off in a Mercedes or an Escalade. I watched her children follow her quietly; never once pinching, hitting or whining.

It was utterly fascinating.

The spell was broken when my daughter threw a hay-maker at my son and a full-blown wrestling match ensued. I pulled my gaze away to referee my children, administer the necessary threats to ensure good behavior (no candy at checkout and no Sprout television when we get home) and offer a hasty glance in the mirror at my stay-at-home mom’s uniform of knit pants, long-sleeved t-shirt, ponytail, and naked face. By the time I looked back in Super Mom’s direction, she was gone.

I couldn’t get her off my mind as I finished my shopping, corralled my children and headed for our minivan. I couldn’t help but wonder where she was headed; lunch with the girls, to the club for some tennis, or out to dinner with her husband while the kids stayed with a sitter-all things that rarely, if ever, happen in my day-to-day world.

As I was buckling what felt like a hundred seat belts and laying the ground rules for the drive home (sit quietly in your seat and keep your hands to yourselves), my son interrupted my spiel by calling out, “Mommy!” Still lost in my self-deprecating thoughts brought about by a woman whom I didn’t know, had never met and probably never would, I absentmindedly answered. “Yes?”

“I love you.”

And there it was: the only reassurance I needed that while I may not wear expensive clothes in single digit sizes, carry a bag that costs the same as our monthly mortgage, or live in a house with enough bathrooms for all of us to have our own, I am living the dream. My dream.

I have four beautiful, healthy children who think the sun rises and sets by me, a husband who works hard to provide for our family so that I can stay home with our babies, and peanut butter flavored kisses any time I want. What could be better than that?

Most days, I realize the awesome life I lead lovin’ on my family, working at my church, picking up toys, changing diapers, refereeing fights, cooking seventeen meals a day, and kissing away boo-boos! In my “free” time I blog about the craziness of this thing I call my life at http://www.mandypmommyof4.blogspot.com

Wines are becoming more and more popular every day. Many people drink a large variety of wines with their lunches or dinners. Many people even use it to cook. Wines are not easy to produce, or store, however. It can cost thousands of dollars to purchase and adequately store wines. And it takes months to produce a wine from start to finish because the grapes that make them have to be grown first. That doesn’t take into account the aging process, which can take years; some wines taste better if they are allowed to ferment over long periods of time. Because so much goes into producing wines and they cost so much, it makes sense that people want to choose the right ones – and in many cases, varietal wines are the way to go.

To put it simply, these wines are wines that are produced primary from one single grape variety. Many wines are actually a mix of different types of grapes. However, varietal wines are wines that are produced using only one single type of grape – and varietal wines are very common. They typically use the most popular types of grapes. In fact, in many places like California, varietal wines are the most commonly purchased. California boats a large selection of varietal wines for sale. These include both red and white varietal wines. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Gewürztraminer are examples of white varietal wines and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Syrah are examples of varietal red wines.

Many people confuse the term vine variety with the term varietal – when one refers to variety, they are referring to the vine or grape but the phrase varietal refers to the actual wine that is produced by said variety. That’s why one can use the term varietal in conjunction with cider made from the same type of apple. It’s easy to confuse the term because they are related but they do not mean the same thing; bottles will display the name if their variety on them. Varietal wines are usually thought to have a stronger flavor than others because they are made up of only one main component.

However, varietals are labeled differently from country to country. Australia, for instance, has entirely shifted over from labeling their bottles with “claret” “hock” or “Chablis” to the typical varietal wine system. Interestingly, this allowed the interest in alternative varietal wines to truly take hold in Australia. In Europe, for a wine to be called a varietal wine it has to contain at least 85% of that variety; some national limits might place that restriction higher but not lower. In France, wines typically do not have any variety listed at all; champagne is an example of a blend of three separate types of grapes but the labels there do not indicate this fact at all. Now, varietal labels have become more common but they are far from widespread.

Here in the United States, a wine only has to be composed of 75% varietal content for one group of wine, the Vitis vinifera wines, and 51% for the Vitis labrusca wines. These two terms refer to the region where the grape was grown, so that’s how the wines are divided into those categories. However, many states require specific compositions when a wine is sold under a particular label. In Oregon, for example, some wines are required to be composed of 95% of a grape variety. Varietal wines are some of the most popular in the world. Their pure flavor is very pleasing to most consumers, which explains their ever growing popularity.

As a Chef or a wine lover, the very first thing you begin to learn about kosher wines – is how to pair them against certain foods. As with regular Italian or French wines, each kosher wine is going to have its own distinct flavors, elements and tannins. The actual tannins in these kosher wines along with the type of grapes used as well as the barrels they are stored in all compliment the kosher wines into a whirlwind of their own flavors. Some of the best brands of Kosher wines are Manischewitz wine, Kedem wine and Alfasi – all of these come in an array of reds and whites as well as sweets and dry’s. Here, listed below, are a few of the fundamental attributes in each brand of wine mentioned above, along with what foods they are best paired with!

Manischewitz Wine – Malaga: This is actually a red US wine, with a fairly fruity and sweet flavor. Since this is made with Concord grapes, which are the sweetest grapes, you can expect this to go great with either salty foods like herring, corned beef, or Gefilte fish. This wine also goes well with sweet things too such as after dinner desserts. If you would serve a Manischewitz Wine with… something like pickled herring, the flavors just wouldn’t mix as graciously. But again, you can try different things and see which pairings you like the best!

Kedem Wine – Chablis: Most wine connoisseurs will tell you to ONLY serve dry white wines with fish and chicken, and red wines with beef. However, the rules have changed over the last few years. Now it’s a free for all for whatever YOU like and whatever YOU think tastes good. So if you want to go with the old rules you can – chicken and fish along with things like bisques and chowders would go great with this wine. However, if you want to go with the more dated rules you would simply eat this with whatever you darn well want. Eh, I never liked rules anyway! Chablis is naturally a very dry wine, somewhat like Cabernet in the reds.

Byblos Wine – Cabernet Sauvignon: As aforementioned, since this is a dry red wine, it’s going to go incredible with ANY kind of red meat – have it be pork, beef, lamb or duck the dryness of the wine versus the darkness of the meat simply goes so well together! Red wines are also really nice with a pungent, buttery, or strong cheese such as Jarlesberg, Stilton or even something as deep as goat cheese.

Alfasi Wines – Special Reserve Pinot Noir: This is actually one of my favorite types of wines as far as reds go. It’s not as dry as the Cabernet, but it’s also not sweet either. This would go good with meats that have a fair amount of fattiness like that of lamb or duck, but since it is such a versatile wine, it goes well with certain desserts (particularly ones with cheese as an ingredient), as well as other cheese products, chicken, certain kinds of fish like sockeye salmon, etc. Most people would say that this is the Wine Of All Wines – while I think there are better wines out there, I also think that this one in particular is pretty darn close to being a so-called master wine.

Of course all of these kosher wine pairings are also going to depend on when the grapes were matured, where the grapes were located at the time, and as mentioned above – what types of barrels and elements the winery infuses into the wine. Just like with infused vodkas or liquors, whatever you place into the barrel or whatever wood you have the barrel made out of – is ultimately going to carry through the flavor of the wine. The other really nice thing about the wines above, is that not only do you NOT have to be an expert on Kosher wines, but you can also save a dime as well because these are all quite inexpensive as far as table wines go. Try them out, try one, try them all – see which wines go with what foods according to YOUR palate (not someone else’s). Enjoy!

Did you realize that it's costing you to work? Find out just how much it's costing you today!

Did you realize that it’s actually costing you to work? I’m talking about work related expenses, such as childcare, work clothing etc. If you’re a working mom who would like to stay at home with her kids, then you have to figure out just how much money is left over after you deduct all work related expenses. That amount (and not your net salary) is what you are really contributing to the household each month. And if you wish to work at home, then you need to know just how much your home based business must bring in each month in order to break even.

The most obvious work related expense is daycare. It’s often the biggest expense to come out of the second income of a dual-income family. After-school care also falls into this category.

Transportation costs probably also take a big chunk of your income. Traveling to and from work and daycare can add up to a pretty penny. What are your work-related transportation costs for the month?

Clothing. Unless you wear some sort of ‘uniform’ to work, you will probably be spending a fair amount of money on work clothes each month. After all, you can’t turn up to a meeting with CEO’s in a faded 3 year old suit, now can you?

In addition to these obvious costs, there are also many hidden costs associated with working. Here are some of them.

Office Food.

Eating lunch out, that morning cup of coffee at Starbucks and anything else you buy to eat at work all fall into this category. For one month jot down whatever you spend on food during the course of your workday. You’ll be surprised at the amount.

Office Socializing.

Buying gifts for co-workers who are getting married, having babies, leaving, transferring to another department, retiring and so on are all part of being a caring, friendly co-worker. So are chats over coffee and occasional drinks after work. How much are you spending each month on office socializing?

Convenience Items

Frozen, microwaveable meals, prepared foods from the Deli and pre-packaged mixes are all wonderful time savers that many working moms rely heavily on. But that convenience comes at a price. In addition to these convenience meals, you are probably also even cooking take-out meals a few times a week because you’re simply too exhausted to cook.

Last minute birthday gifts, expensive cookies from the bakery for the school play and so on all fall into this category.

Shopping.

Shopping during lunch breaks or because you feel guilty about not spending enough time with your kids can also blow your budget.

School Lunches.

Preparing homemade lunches is often just an additional chore that working moms have no time for. How much are you paying each month for the convenience of prepared lunches?

Then there are other minor expenses that you probably never even thought of including, such as fund raisers, mlm products bought from a co-worker, or betting on who will win the latest football game.

For one month, make note of how much you spend in each of these areas. Add up all your work realted expenses and subtract that from your income. That total is how much you are contributing to the family income. Divide that by the amount of hours you worked and you will arrive at your hourly wage.

Armed with these figures you will now be able to decide if you want to continue working or not. If you want to start a home based business you will know exactly how much you need to bring in each month in order to break even. Or if you’re a stay at home mom, you’ll know by how much you need to reduce your expenses in order to make ends meet.

A romantic dinner is not complete without a perfect wine. For the wine lovers, Verdi and Rombauer are two names that will surely entice the taste buds. Most of the best and finest wines are available world over, thanks to online wine shops.

The American market is full of good wines these days. The Verdi wine in particular is offering a great taste and aroma to all the wine lovers all over the world. The quality and the consistence of the Verdi wine has given this wine the popularity in these few years. The American sparkling wine market is seeing a revolution these days and in the forefront is the Verdi Spumante. Some call it a sweet sparkling white wine beverage and some simply call it the white wine. This Verdi wine boasts to be the fastest growing sparkling white wine in US.

Verdi wine falls under the category of spumante and is low in alcohol, delicately sweet and slightly sparkling. If you do not know, a spumante is actually the genetic name for Italian sparkling wine. Some claim the spumante is older than Champagne, also a sparkling wine produced exclusively in the Champagne region of France. However, Verdi wine does not pop off as much as Champagne does. On the plus side, it has a reusable cap and so a Verdi spumante can be sealed tightly and kept in the refrigerator for later use. It will pop off next time you open the bottle, but not as much as it does the first time. The taste remains the same.

Use different Verdi wine with different dishes. Verdi Bosca Verdi Asti spumante for example goes well with what we call junk food as well as cheese and citrus fruits. Bruno Verdi Sangue di Giuda Paradiso on the other hand go well with meat. The last is the hallmark of Bruno Verdi. Although Antonio Verdi started growing grape vines along with corn and wheat on his farm almost seven generation ago, it was the third generation of the Verdi, Luigi who started making wine out of the grapes grown in the family’s farmland. Much later Bruno Verdi started bottling the wine and put his name on the label.

If you are hankering for storage to your wide selection of fine wines, it is probable that you need to scout for the ideal wine rack addition for your home. Choosing the right type of wine rack can be challenging; especially if you are just growing your own wine assortment.

It is always wise to seek out a well-designed rack that combines function and style. Wine racks that do not involve wine bottles being budged around too much could be the best kind of rack unit that you should go for. Keeping the bottles at an angle enables the wines to maintain cork moisture which results in pleasant-tasting wine flavor. Furthermore, it keeps the cork from drying out, letting the air seep into the bottle.

Dating back in history, the Romans designed wine storage suchlike wine barrels. They have not so much noted about space since these barrels were huge and heavy. You can only ooze a liquid through its makeshift spigot on the base of the barrel. These modern times, space is of key importance in acquiring a rack. You must adhere to several factors when picking out the proper rack for your wine selection.

The number of wine bottles you have

First of all, it is necessary to note the number of bottles you have lying around. Take into account when the wines will be consumed and how many are you supposed to store. For instance, if you have a few nice wine bottles that are all set for drinking in the upcoming month, then you may obtain a rack that is firmly set on the floor in a cabinet in any part of your house with the right temperature.

For serious wine collectors needing to store their wines for a long time, you need to have modular racks that keep over a hundred wine bottles. A cellar unit may come in handy that hold a gamut of wine bottles easily.

The place to set your wine rack

The second factor is the place where you are going to install your rack. A place that is cool, dim, slightly moist, and has a stable temperature is the best place for your rack. If the place has steady exposure to light, heat and constantly changing temperature, then that would be the worst place to have your rack in.

Modern homes integrate cellar-like units which can be a space under the stairway, a walk-in-pantry, an insulated room, a converted garage, or a large closet. Anywhere is possible as long as the proper temperature is available in its environment.

The material for your wine rack

The third factor centers on the material. There are several kinds of wine racks out there, and it is wholly up to you to desire for what you ant as long as you do not sacrifice function with style. If modern looks are your thing, you can choose a quality stainless steel rack.

For a traditional touch, you can opt for wood varieties like cherry, walnut, oak, mahogany, western red cedar, or the less expensive pine. If you prefer innovative and fresh styles, seek out wrought iron, which can be formed in different colors and shapes to complement your home décor.

The kind of style you want

The fourth factor to consider is the style of your wine rack. You can select from freestanding to hanging wine racks, from wine racks easily incorporated into cupboards to stackable ones. Whatever style you choose, the available space in your home should accommodate them conveniently.

The characteristics of the material

The fifth would be taking into account the strength and weight of your wine bottles as well as the durability of your rack. You do not want to have a rack that appears weak and does not maintain that sturdiness in securing your wine collection. Find out if there are any extras that come with your rack such as additional shelves for extra stability and full bottle depth. And make sure that the manufacturer whom you purchased your wine rack from has provided a one year warranty.

The budget for your wine rack

And lastly, your budget should also be considered. Wine rack stores have a variety of wine racks that will definitely suit all types of budgets. For online shopping, some even offer you free shipment for your wine racks. If you have really planned on investing, then get a well-designed wine rack that you can afford. Wines deserve their pampering, and a good wine rack boosts their overall quality as well.

I know firsthand was life as an angry mom is like. I spent almost two years trying to control my temper and failing miserably. It took a confrontation with someone close to me for me to really take a good, hard look in the mirror and realize that the problem was bigger than me. My anger was out of control. I had turned into someone that I didn’t recognize and my family was suffering because of it.

Soon after that confrontation, my kids and I were in the doctor’s office because one of them was sick. After the check-up, as the doctor was getting ready to go I mentioned to him briefly that I’d been struggling with anger. I remember saying, “I’m not sad or depressed. Just really angry…all the time.” Having known us for quite a while (in fact he delivered my son), he gave me a prescription for an anti-depressant and wanted me to try it to see if it helped. I really wanted it to help. I wanted to be a good mom, a loving mom, and at the moment I felt an ogre.

Fast-forward a couple of years. I was no longer taking the anti-depressants and the anger was still an issue. One day, during an appointment with a med-student (I had gone in because my hands were swollen), she decided to check my thyroid levels because of some other symptoms that I described such as weight gain and exhaustion. It turned out that things that I assumed were part of a mom’s normal life (what mom isn’t over-tired? and many of us are still carrying around a little ‘baby fat’, right?) were actually a medical issue with my thyroid. I’m thrilled to tell you that after a year of treatment, I’m on my way to being “normal” again and the anger is no longer an issue.

For me, it was a medical condition. For other moms it can be postpartum issues, the after-effects of giving birth or a traumatic event in their lives that changes them from the fun-loving women they know themselves as to stressed-out, angry moms. If you relate to any of the above, read on for a few tips that can help you find help… and hope.

1. Get Help – The first step, of course, is to recognize that anger is something that you’re struggling with and that you may not be able to handle it on your own. This was a huge hurdle for me and looking back, I wish I had done it much sooner. Make an appointment to talk with someone you trust – a close friend, your pastor, a doctor, a counselor or someone else that can help you find the cause of your anger.

2. Make Sure They Hear You – I made the mistake of mentioning my anger to our family doctor at the end of an appointment for one of my kids. As a result, he didn’t have time to spend with me and because he trusted what I said – that anger was the only symptom I was aware of – he did went ahead and put me on Prozac instead of having me come back for a screening.

Don’t do what I did. Make an appointment for yourself. Go, sit down and explain what you’re feeling and experiencing. In my case it turned out to be something that Prozac couldn’t help with – my thyroid.

3. Take Care of Yourself -When you’re dealing with anger one of the best things that you can do is give yourself a break. Build some time into your schedule to take a long walk, a bath or something else that helps you unwind. If you need to vent, call a friend or even write it out on paper just to get some of the anger out of your system (be sure to throw the angry notes in the trash).

4. Be Honest With Yourself – Looking back I can see that I was caught up in the game of pretending that everything was fine instead of letting my friends in on the struggles I was having. I had to get to a place where I was forced to be honest – with myself, with God and with those around me. I can tell you firsthand that it was a huge relief – a burden lifted from my shoulders – when I was able to sit and tall honestly about what I was feeling.

5. Let People Help – Another mistake I made was thinking that I needed to be super-mom. That I needed to have it all together and be able to do it all. Over the last couple of years I’ve learned that it’s okay not to be good at everything and that it’s okay to let others help once in a while. And now I’m strong enough to be able to reach out and help others.

It took sickness for me to be able to let go of the standards I had been holding myself to. It took getting to the point that I could barely get out of bed for me to go and get help. I was angry and frustrated for so much longer than I needed to be because I wouldn’t let myself reach out for help. If you see yourself in any of the above, please, please email me or reach out to someone that you trust. Find hope today!

Yes, the crockpots and slowcookers are also for those who don’t care for meat. Personally, I eat mostly vegetables because I don’t particularly like meat. I grew up with pet animals and never enjoyed eating them. My best friend’s family ran a commercial chicken farm. I helped out there, especially after her father’s death, and decided I would never eat anything that nasty again! Yes, my dislikes are in my head but so be it! But I know there are many of you out there who don’t eat meat for more personal or political reasons. That is your choice and that is fine with me. But I realized almost all my crockpot and slowcooker recipes have meat in them. So in honor of you who don’t eat meat, here are a couple of recipes for you. But never fear, meat lovers will enjoy these recipes, too. Just add a sandwich or a chicken breast, etc. and make a meal for all. The Chunky Applesauce is a great and easy way to enjoy apples and by substituting Splenda or other sugar substitutes for the sugar, you can make it a diabetic applesauce. It is also a good way to use up apples if you have too many and they are starting to go soft. And forget buying little jars of baby food applesauce. Your baby will love you for making your own.

BELL PEPPER-CORN CHOWDER
1 cup chopped yellow onion
5 cups frozen whole-kernel corn
2 cans (14-oz each) chicken broth*
1/2 cup water
1 medium red bell pepper, diced
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
2 green onions, chopped

Combine all ingredients, except green onions, in a slow cooker or crockpot; stir to blend and cover the pot. Cook on low to medium setting 4 to 6 hours. Before serving sprinkle each bowl with the chopped green onions and a dash of freshly ground black pepper, if desired.

*Vegetable broth may be substituted. I use vegetable broth and frankly, I think it makes a better chowder. The choice is up to you!

CHUNKY APPLESAUCE
10 large apples
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 to 1 cup sugar (depends on natural sweetness of the apples)*

Peel, core, and slice apples. Place the apples into crock pot along with the water, cinnamon, and sugar. Stir gently to combine. Cover the cooker and cook on low overnight or all day (8 to 10) hours. Delicious served warm or can be kept in the refrigerator in a sealed container for around a week.

*Make this a diabetic applesauce by substituting Splenda granular for the sugar. You probably won’t need a full cup unless your apples are really tart!

Enjoy!

I love organic wine so much that I am doing a series on fine and perhaps not so fine organic and sometimes biodynamic wines tasting them with a variety of foods. This article explores a biodynamic highly rated white wine coming from the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Was it a bargain? I'll make specific recommendations, and won't be silent if I'm unhappy with a wine.

The Piedmont region of northern Italy is especially known for red wine, such as Barolo that is often considered Italy’s finest wine. Today’s wine is 100% Cortese, a white grape from part of the Piedmont fairly close to the Mediterranean. It was considered to be one of Italy’s finest white wine way back in the 1970s. Gavi holds Italy’s finest wine designation, DOCG, where the G stands for guaranteed. But this designation is no guarantee. Don’t expect to get one of Italy’s best whites, and organic to boot, at this relatively modest price.

Before reviewing this wine I want to mention a policy change. Starting now I will usually taste two wines with the same meals and cheese. One will be a $10 wine and the other will cost more, perhaps a lot more. My wine cabinet is brimming and this is the only way that I can manage to taste and review so many wines that interest me.

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed
La Raia Gavi DOCG 2007 12.8% alcohol about $17

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. Description: La Raia has been certified organic since 2005 and certified biodynamic as of the 2007 vintage. It is one of only 23 wineries or vineyards in Italy with this certification. Their eco-friendly techniques result in a Gavi that is crisp and fresh with flavors that hold a strong connection to the land. Enjoy as an aperitif or with lighter seafood dishes. Our Quality Assurance Laboratory has determined that this wine contains 21 mg/L of free sulphur. And now for my review.

With the first sips the wine was slightly sweet and quite long. It was almost feathery. The first meal was a chicken leg baked in a soy, garlic, and black pepper sauce with potatoes and onions. There was a side of green beans in tomato sauce and another side of okra in a similar sauce but with ginger as well. The wine enveloped the chicken and had no trouble cutting the grease. It was delicate but it was definitely there. The okra’s ginger made it stronger.

The second meal started with Matjes herring. The Gavi was round with a touch of sweetness. With the omelet the wine was almost unctuous, and light but pleasant. But when it faced roasted, unskinned eggplant with plenty of oil and garlic, the wine was overwhelmed. It fought back by presenting notes of gooseberry. I finished the meal with a high-quality French style lemon pie with a buttery crust. The Gavi was fleeting and yet long.

The final meal was a vegetarian box called baked ziti siciliano with eggplant and mozzarella cheese. I slathered on lots grated Parmesan cheese. The wine was feathery and yet crisp but didn’t give a lot of flavor. If you like subtle wines you’ll go for this one. I finished the meal with slices of fresh pineapple; perhaps surprisingly the wine picked up strength and was round.

I tasted this wine with two cheeses; a marbled Cheddar and a sheep’s milk Feta. The cheddar let the Gavi present its nuanced layers; the cheese served well as a foil. With the Feta the wine had a fine, fine length. I’m not used to such good wine and cheese pairings.

Final verdict. I’m on the borderline between never again, and I’ll put this on my purchase again list. I guess that’s because I’m not committed to organic wine and for me cheese pairings are quite secondary. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that a better producer would have made a fine wine. But then you would have to pay more.

At some time or another each WAHM has had to face the eternal question, of whether or not to make use of childcare while they try to work a normal day from home. It is one of the hardest questions that we face. But it needn't be one that is wrought with such emotion. Let's use our heads.

Congratulations, you have started your own business, and it’s going rather well. Going SO WELL in fact, that you need to dedicate more time to it. What if that little bit of extra, uninterrupted time, could mean a BIG difference to your income? Of course uninterrupted time is the thing that we all know and miss as work at home moms, in fact it is darn near a thing of the past in most households where there are young children.

What if just having a few extra hours a week of uninterrupted time was all you needed to really break into the next gear, finish that awesome high paying assignment or project?

The fact is, that at some point you may need to consider a hiring someone for a few hours of help so that you can complete your major project or assignment.

Some of us are blessed with extended families that are only to happy to take our children into their homes and their busy schedules, for a morning a week, or an afternoon here or there. However, there will be that one situation where you absolutely HAVE to get things done, your deadline is looming faster than a sprinter on steroids, and murphy’s law, that will be the one day, that all your family are busy, or out of town, or ill.

It *will* happen. You know it will, it has happened before. So what do you do? What about those of you who don’t have extended family nearby, or even in the same country? What do *you* do? Sooner or later you may need the help of a qualified nanny, baby-sitter, or if you’re really lucky an au-pair.

Moms are notorious suckers for punishment, and many are taken aback, or even offended at the idea of having to hire someone. What? We’re not perfect? Who says? Hello? We are all HUMAN. (Ok, as women we know we’re really super human, but still, we’re not perfect). Why not hire someone, who’s job it is to care for and entertain your kids for a few hours?

I learned a valuable lesson from my youngest son, when I made the difficult, heart wrenching decision to let him go to a playgroup for a few hours for the first time.

I was torn apart.Less at the idea of letting him go, but more with the idea that I should have been able to entertain him ceaselessly, see to his every need and still close that multi million dollar deal. Isn’t that what every mother does? Here I was, feeling like I was a failure simply because I could not do it all, all the time, twenty-four hours a day.

Until I realized just how ridiculous that sounded. At what point did I decide that I HAD to be this perfect person, who did everything? It really dawned on me how silly it was, when I was packing his little back-pack to go to the playgroup again and he saw what I was doing, and he started clapping his little hands together and shouting, “Yay, Yay, Yay!!” I realised that the person who ran the playgroup, had chosen this as a career.

She chose it because she loved children.

She chose to spend her time with 5 little youngsters and make their day as fun, as entertaining, as educational, and as routine as possible. Her absolute mission was to make sure that the kids were looked after as well as if she were their real mother, ha ha, their well rested, imaginative, never-runs-out-of-patience mother, who also closes multi million dollar deals. Hah.

Being a mother is something I chose, but reality insists that I also earn an income. My chosen form of income bringing activity is graphic design and photography. It is not child care. Though some aspects of childcare come naturally to mothers, I must admit, that I am absolutely terrible at thinking up fun and games all the time, and certainly not when I’m trying to finish that huge project that demands so much of my attention.

So in the same way that I take my child to the doctor when they are sick, I also choose to take them to a childcare expert when I need time to do what I am good at, and that which allows my children the lifestyle that they enjoy, and some months it is the only reason that the food on the table is there at all.

So if you find yourself in the position where you are needing childcare, I implore you, do not feel like a failure, think of your strengths and the many advantages that YOU and your strengths bring your family, then make your decision.

Are you interested in the different dessert wines available? One of the more popular dessert wines, and also a terrific cooking wine, is Madeira wine from the Madeira Islands of Portugal.

Madeira Production

Wine-making is a delicate process, as the type of grape, the container used for the fermentation process and temperature will all affect the characteristics of the resulting wine. To hinder evaporation to retain the fruity aromas, fermentation tanks are usually cooled and carefully monitored.

The production of Madeira wine is distinctly different in that the wine is actually cooked. Most wines die a flaming death when exposed to heat, particularly for long periods of time. Madeira wine is heated to between 100 degrees to 140 degrees F for several months. Madeira is also allowed to oxidize, a certain kiss of death for other wines. Yet the resulting product is delightful.

Madeira History

During the days when ships were used to transport goods in the 1500s, Madeira was transported to India around the Cape of Good Hope in the bowels of boats and was treated to heat and the rocking of the seas. The fact that the wine tasted better when it ended up in India than it tasted before it left Portugal was very confusing to winemakers of the time.

People tried to figure out why the wine tasted so good for more than 100 years. It was not until 1794 that a method was developed to cook Madeira in ovens, or estufias, that mimicked the conditions of being transported via ships in hot climates.

Interestingly, Madeira has a place in the history of the American Revolution. In 1655 England legislated that wine exports from Europe could only be shipped to British colonies using English ports and ships, with the exception of Madeira. Since grapes of good quality could not be grown in the original 13 colonies of the New World, the colonists ended up consuming almost one quarter of all of the Madeira produced. Five years before the Boston Tea Party, a dispute over import duties resulted in the Liberty, a sloop owned by John Hancock, to be seized by British officials. Rioters hit the streets of Boston over the loss of the Madeira wine.

Types of Madeira Wines

There are four major types of Madeira produced, all of which are named after the type of grape used to make the wine. The types of Madeira are Malmsey, Bual, Sercial and Verdelho, with Sercial being the driest of the four types of Madeira wines and Malmsey being the sweetest.

In addition to types, Madeira wine is also available in different levels of quality.

Finest: Three-year-old wines

Reserve: Five-year-old wines

Special Reserve: Aged for at least 10 years

Extra Reserved: Aged for at least 15 years

Vintage: Aged for at least 20 years with an additional 2-year aging in the bottle

Interesting Madeira Facts

Madeira is a fortified wine. Fortified wines have additional alcohol content in them. Madeira wine was originally not fortified. The addition of grape brandy helped to preserve the wine on its long ocean journey at a time when refrigeration was not possible.

Madeira boasts the longest lifespan. Normally when a bottle of wine is opened and exposed to the air, it immediately begins to deteriorate. Because Madeira has been exposed to high heat and oxidation during its fermentation process, an opened bottle of Madeira can last up to a year without a noticeable difference in taste. Unopened bottles are one of the longest-lasting wines.

Madeira wines need to be opened ahead of time. Unlike other wines that need only a short time to oxidize to release aromas, Madeira wines should be opened at least 24 hours, if not 48 hours or more, to breathe before serving.

Serving Madeira wines. Always serve Madeira wines at room temperature to allow the aromas to evaporate to heighten your wine-drinking experience.

Madeira Wine Food Pairings

Madeira may be paired successfully with

Chocolate cake

Creme Brulee

Blue cheese

Fontina cheese

Madeira also works well as a cooking wine when paired with chicken and mushrooms or when making savory sauces.

A mom often wears many hats, taxi driver, cook, housekeeper, bread-winner, shoulder to cry on, and more. So, how does mom juggle it all?

A mom often wears many hats, taxi driver, cook, housekeeper, bread-winner, shoulder to cry on, and more. So, how does mom juggle it all? The following are six secrets of organized moms to help make things easier:

1.	Routines. Organized moms serve dinner at the same time each night, have strict bed times, have after school routines with homework and socializing. If you want to be an organized mom, you have to have a routine you stick to. This might mean that you get your child up at the same time each day, and expect them to get dressed and make their bed before they come in to breakfast. You may have a few different routines, such as your morning routine, your after school and evening routine, and your weekend routine. A routine helps you, the mom, keep things on track, and helps your children to know what to expect, and what is expected of them.

2.	Meal plans. Organized moms do not spend extra time in the grocery store, or standing in front of the refrigerator trying to determine what to prepare that night. Organized moms take a few minutes once a week to create a meal plan for the week. Monday: Soup, Tuesday: Chicken, Wednesday: Pizza, Thursday: Hamburgers, and the list goes on. The idea is that if you know what you are going to make you can be prepared throughout the day. For example, if you are going to roast a chicken for dinner, you will need to get it out of the freezer in the morning in order for it to be defrosted by dinner time.

3.	Rules. Organized moms have rules or guidelines for their families. They may be simple like dinner is at 5:30. Or they may be more complex like, no friends, television, or snacking until your homework is completed. A mom can’t keep the whole family organized without some participation, so rules, and guidelines are helpful. Make them clear, and enforce them.

4.	Time off. An organized mom does not let herself get overly stressed, or overwhelmed because she knows when to say no, when to de-stress, and when to take a break. She knows that when she is starting to lose her cool, that letting dad take the kids to McDonald’s rather than fixing a nice meal, is sometimes better, even if it is not the healthiest option. The organized mom knows when she needs a break, and figures out how to take one.

5.	Organized home. The organized mom has an organized home. She creates a place for everything so that school mornings are not spent hastily trying to find shoes, backpacks, pens that work, etc. Instead, everything has a place, and the kids know where things go, and contribute by being sure to put their backpack on the hook, in the cubby, or whatever the case may be, the night before.

6.	Back-up plans. Organized moms always plan ahead, and prepare for the worst. They carry a spare outfit, some cash, and phone numbers of friends and family, just in case. They take things in stride. So, for example, if your tire goes flat while driving, and it is your day to do carpool, the organized mom has the numbers of the other carpool moms on hand, and knows which ones can typically swap days. So, have a back up plan.

Fast foods may have been the meal of choice for many busy families through the last couple of decades. But now the slow cooked, home-prepared meals are gaining in popularity! Crock pots, with their wafting aromas and ‘ready to eat’ meals, entice health-conscious, busy people.

And it doesn’t take super human talent, skill, or effort to make a delicious meal in a crockpot – in fact there are quite a few crockpot recipes that require 5 or less ingredients! And crockpot cooking can be as simple as tossing a few ingredients into the pot before everyone leaves for the day. In the evening, the smell of slow cooked food fills the house and whets the appetite. There’s no more last minute trip to the grocery store, or the endless ‘what’s for dinner’ questions.

Rising food costs and shrinking household budgets have helped bring many nostalgic foods back to the forefront. Time stressed families, tired of eating prepackaged foods, have begun to crave the aroma of savory nutritious meals.

Pot roast, beef stew, chicken and noodles can utilize less expensive cuts of meat, which taste tender and moist after slow cooking.

Our grandmothers knew how to manage a frugal, yet efficient and productive home — and they didn’t need expensive gadgets either! Many slow cookers sell in the range of $20 to $35, and the cost is soon made up by the thriftiness of eating at home.

On the market now are the programmable crockpot slow cooker. No stirring or supervision is necessary, and once cook time has expired the smart-pot automatically shifts to a warm setting. Want a side dish with your stew? Try the dual cooker. It allows cooking of two different dishes at the same time. Worried about little hands reaching up to the counter? Try the ‘cool touch’ slow cooker. These can be up to 25% cooler than other slow cookers.

Although crockpots are a relatively new invention, making hearty foods that simmer all day has been around for quite a while. Whether you’re cooking for just two people or a large family, make your own convenience food! Dig out some old recipes or find a new one, and enjoy flavorful foods without the hardship.

Opening the front door on a cold evening evening and being greeted by the inviting smells of a beef stew or chicken noodle soup wafting from a slow cooker – ahhh – it is truly a diner’s dream come true!

Spotting Tainted Or Corked Wine

A bad mouthful of wine can ruin a perfectly good meal. Here's a primer on how to spot tainted or corked wine.

A tainted or corked wine is usually caused by a byproduct of fungus growing on the cork. This byproduct is called 1, 2, 4-tricholoanisole or TCA. TCA in your wine will give off a moldy or musty smell, although you might not be able to pick up the bad smell from the cork alone.

Contaminations, including TCA, can be passed to corks through the air, resulting in bad-tasting wine.

Addressing tainted or corked wine

The wine industry loses a lot of money yearly because of tainted or corked wine. The industry is using several different avenues to address corked or tainted wine, including:

Sterilizing corks

Screw tops

Synthetic corks

The problem with screw tops and synthetic corks is that they are associated with inexpensive, cheap wines in many consumers’ minds. Wine producers are often afraid to buck consumer perceptions, even though alternative corks can result in lower costs for both the manufacturer and the consumer.

Maderized or cooked wines

Cooked or maderized wines occur when wines have been stored at temperatures that are too high. Wines should always be stored in cool, dark places so that they will not be affected by heat or light. Unfortunately, wines are not always properly stored, particularly if they are being shipped long distances during hot summer months.

You should probably not try to use your attic for wine storage, even if there is more space there than in any other part of your home.

Oxidation

Oxygen can be a wine’s enemy, ultimately turning wine into vinegar over time. Oxidation can occur if your bottle has a faulty cork, allowing too much oxygen to come in contact with the wine. Corks can also have a limited shelf life. If an inferior cork is used to stop a fine bottle of wine that should be aged for many years, you might end up with a bad bottle of wine if the cork deteriorates before the wine is properly aged.

Oxidation is also the reason that we have wine stoppers. Wine stoppers will help slow down the oxidation process so that you can drink leftover wine for a day or two after you open the bottle.

Refermenting

Having a second fermentation on purpose when making wine is wonderful, resulting in delightful sparkling wines and champagnes. Unplanned refermentation in a bottle is disastrous, resulting in a bad-tasting wine that might have a little fizz to it.

When a wine is not really bad

There are several reasons that a wine might taste bad, but is really not.

No matter how much your friends recommend a wine, you might think that the wine is bad simply because you do not like the taste of it

A wine might taste bad because of a poor pairing with food. The same wine that tasted awful might be terrific when paired with another food or when drunk alone.

If there are little white crystals at the bottom of the bottle or sticking to the cork, the wine might not be bad. Tartrate, or potassium hydrogen tartrate, occurs naturally in some kinds of wines. You might consider just filtering the crystals out of your wine before trying the drink.

Similarly, sediments often fall to the bottom of fine wines. Sediments in wines can also be a natural byproduct of the wine-making process.

There are five basic steps to wine making. They consist of: harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermentation, clarification, aging and bottle ling. You may change each step. With each decision you make, you will change your wine, making it one of a kind.

Here are some of the basics you will need to be familiar with if you are going to start wine making at home. The product you finish with will depend on the grapes you select and your vision as a wine maker. Wine making or vinification as it is called, is not only a science but an art also.

There are five basic steps to wine making. They consist of: harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermentation, clarification, aging and bottle ling. You may change each step. With each decision you make, you will change your wine, making it one of a kind.

There are definite things a wine maker should be conscious of throughout the wine making procedure.

1.	Type of Juice (grape) and yeast
2.	Sugar content
3.	Acid level
4.	Fermentation containers
5.	Exposure to air
6.	Process of clearing wine
7.	Temperature/Humidity
8.	Ageing

Another issue to consider is space your wine will be stored during the fermentation process. Temperature has a large part in the aging procedure. A correct climate will make a wine with all its true flavors. You will also need to limit the quantity of light the wine is exposed to. Any excessive vibrations and sound vibrations will also be detrimental to the taste or your wine.

Tools that a wine maker must have to make It is highly recommended that a first time wine maker purchase a wine making kit. For the more courageous wine maker all tools can be bought at wine specialty stores.
Here is a listing of what you will require:

Primary Fermentation bucket: this will need to be fabricated with food grade plastic, and possess a cover.

Airlocks: these are necessary to allow gasses to escape, but prevent gasses to enter.

Secondary Fermentation Carboys: These are usually made of glass, and are 2.5-6 gallons in size. They can also be fabricated in plastic, but keep in mind that plastic may have an affect on you wine.

Acid Test Kit: this will be utilized to watch the PH level throughout fermentation.

Triple Scale Hyrdometer: you will use this to measure the alcohol percentage of your wine.

Plastic Tube: the plastic tube is used during the racking stage. When shifting from your primary fermentation bucket into your carboy you will need to remove any debris that has collected during fermentation.

Glass or Plastic bottles: amass the adequate number of bottles to store your wine into. Verify that they are all thoroughly cleaned and sterilized.

Corkers: you need to use your corker to cork your wine bottles.

Other tools you may need are: kitchen scale, measuring spoons, flasks, and a floating thermometer.

Tools for the more advanced wine maker can consist of wine presses to obtain the must for the grapes. Barrels can also be used to give additional flavor.

Ingredients you will require throughout the wine making process are:

Yeast Nutrient: Supplies your yeast energy and ensures to provide enough alcohol content.

Pectic Enzyme: added to assist in breaking down fruit throughout fermentation.

Acid Blend: used to add sharpness to your wine.

Wine Tannin: added to augment the character of your wine.

Wine Yeast: This is the most crucial ingredient to your wine making process. It converts the sugars in you wine must into alcohol content.

Campden Tablets: used to make sure the wine does not spoil and remains fresh.

Moms are their own worst enemy, I think. We are graced with such a valuable role, we have such privilege to be so influential on those around us – and yet we are constantly trying to achieve a higher standard. Not that having a high standard is a bad thing, but it’s self-defeating if that high standard continues to go higher because reaching it is never good enough.

I think our problem stems from the fact that we compare ourselves. We think we have to have things a certain way, live a certain way, do things in a certain way. We fail to take into account our own personality, lifestyle, gifts, or circumstances.

For example -

Who says that you have to cook your family dinner every night? Maybe a couple nights a week would be good enough to work with your families’ activity schedule.

Who says that you have to do your devotions first thing in the morning? Maybe you are not a morning person and during naptime, or after the kids go to sleep at night would work much better for you.

Who says that your house has to look like it came out of a magazine? With kids who live there and hopefully feel comfortable enough as they grow up to want to stay home and invite their friends there as well…. Wouldn’t simply being “mostly picked up” suffice?

Who says that you have to volunteer for every activity your children are involved in? If you get overloaded and stressed from doing too much, can’t you simply go attend and support your children by your presence instead of being in charge of something that affects your state of being and happiness in your home?

Who says that you have to buy every item your child brings home from school to sell if you don’t need it or really don’t have the extra income? Isn’t buying one thing once in awhile and honestly telling them you need to watch where you spend your dollars – a more valuable lifetime lesson?

Who says get-togethers at your house have to be super fancy? Sometimes the presence of friends is enough and being comfortable around each other with nachos and dip.

Who says you have to look happy and pulled-together all of the time? Sometimes life stinks! It’s okay to acknowledge you’re going through a tough time but are doing the best you can.

I think we have this “image” of the perfect wife and mother ingrained in our heads. But reality doesn’t always measure up to that image. And so when it doesn’t, we practically break our backs trying to make it measure up to the way we think things should be. I think we need to look outside the box a little more often and not be afraid to do things differently. They might fit our family and us a whole lot better than some ideal we have stuffed up in our heads.

So for today, let’s stop and pause every time we feel we are entering into the “I should” or “I have to” do things zone. If you don’t have time to make dinner because you held up a friend in need on the phone for over an hour – let it go. Your family won’t be deprived. You can all enjoy sandwiches together with laughter instead of falling in a heap exhausted over a fine meal.

We need to let go of our unreachable expectations and let life take us on the curves and detours that it chooses to. It will be good for us to have to “roll with it” sometimes and learn more about ourselves and where our priorities should lie. I bet we will discover that we really do stress about too many little things.

Enjoy this process of discovery and where it will lead you.

Have you ever been frustrated because you can’t locate that special bottle, or because you are not able to show off your wine collection to your friends? Would you like to be able to keep all your precious wine bottles within easy access at all times? Well all this is possible no matter whether your collection is large or small, or if it resides in a purpose built cellar or a cupboard under the stairs. Wine racks come in many different styles, sizes and materials to make sure your valuable collection can be stored safely and stylishly. You can now find a system of wine racks to suit every purpose and every budget.

What Are The Available Wine Rack Options?

There is a very wide range of racks available; these now come in many different styles, materials and sizes. Wine racks are can be found in different configurations such as hanging or attached racks. Racks come in thousands of different shapes, sizes, and designs. One of the most popular rack options for small areas such as under the stairs or in a closet is the modular rack system that can be built up and added to in order to fit the exact space that you plan to use. Diamond or triangle style storage systems are also popular, however you should remember that if you need to get a bottle from the bottom of a triangle you will have to remove all the bottles on top first. There are also rack types that can fit under a staircase or around a circular concrete tank. Many styles are beautiful and interesting to look at, but remember they must also serve the purpose of easy storage and access to any wine bottle in your collection. Hanging wine racks are also available that allow a wine rack in almost any area, so that you are not limited only to wall space. Wine racks for purpose built cellars will take up the entire room’s wall space to store large numbers of wine bottles. There are many wine rack designers that can configure any style of wine rack to suit your wine cellar perfectly; these designs can be set to ensure that the storage of your wine will be both practical and eye-catching. Many designers are now able to use CAD (computer aided design) to design your cellar, all you need to provide are the specific dimensions of your cellar. Many of these designers can build modular racks to suit your design and room space and you are able to install them yourself.

How Do You Choose Your Wine Racks?

Wine racks can be made from a large number of materials including timber such as cedar, maple and pine. When choosing wooden wine racks make sure that odourless timber is used.

When you observe a wine tasting affair in progress, the process seems to be somewhat daunting. The way the wine taster(connoisseur) decants out the wine, gazes intently at it, twirls the wineglass around, smells it (more like sniffing), imbibes it and rolls the liquid inside his or her mouth and finally downs it, sometimes having repeated some of the aforesaid process a few times makes one think that some numinous ritual is being carried out. Wine tasting is an elaborate process based on the sensory judgment of the liquid. The senses of sight, smell and taste are all used to taste and judge a wine.

Before going into the actual niceties of wine tasting, it is better if a little familiarity on the different wines, the ingredients that go into the distilling of the same and the process thereof is acquired. In essence, wine is grape juice that has been subjected to the process of fermentation by the addition of yeast and various Vintners (wine makers) use special strains of yeast to get specific results. There are four types of wines: white, red, rosé and champagne. Champagne is a class by itself and rosé is not considered as true wine by connoisseurs.

It is a widespread conviction that green grapes make white wines and red grapes make red wine. Though the conjecture is basically correct, white wine can be made from red grapes simply because the inside of red grapes is in actual fact white. It is the skin that gives it the red color. Most champagnes, by the way, are made from red grapes. Simply stated, the process involves the crushing of the grapes; removal of the physical and chemical impurities; adding of yeast and leaving the juice (technically – must) to ferment in containers. The material of the container where the process of fermentation takes place determines the excellence and cost of the wine. Once properly fermented, aging takes place. The maturing process has a definite say on the quality and price of the final product. Wines aged for ages together in oak barrels are dearer.

Gaining knowledge of the basics of wine tasting is relatively straightforward. Once understood, the subtleness of the wine and other finer distinctions have to be honed only by consistent practice. Practice always makes perfect. While the act of wine tasting is as old as the making of it, a sort of ceremonial ritual has been introduced into the procedure which can be broken down into four basic phases based on sight, smell and taste. Wikipedia lists them as: Appearance, “in glass” fragrance, “in mouth” sensations and “finish”(after taste). In more common manner os speaking they are color, swirl, smell, taste and savor, in that order.

The first thing that is obvious when the wine is poured out is its color which is best judged by holding it against a white background. Placing the glass at an angle against the white background brings out a gradation of the colors the wine is imbued with. The color at the edge of the wine will give you a hint to its maturity. In a red wine, a deep crimson color indicates an aged wine. In white wines the young ones will show a yellowish color and the older ones, amber. Another attribute that can be judged by sight is by swirling the wine. The knack of swirling is slightly difficult at first but this shows you how much the liquid sticks to the surface of the glass. This is called by the adepts as revealing the “legs”. The more the amount, the more the content of alcohol.

After the sight part of the judging comes the smelling. The deeper nuances of the wine are revealed by its fragrance. There is a plethora of scents. Actually an overabundance of them. Depending on the grapes, the wine making process and the storage conditions different wines will have different aromas. Broadly these may be oaken, buttery, floral, wooden or any other familiar scent. Practice and learning from more experienced experts can sharpen this skill.

Finally comes the actual tasting. The wine is swirled once more and a small sip is first taken. The first impression is what you get from the first sip. Some more wine is then imbibed and the whole mouth is coated with it. The flavors of the wine can be experienced now. Sucking in some air into the mouth and mixing it with the wine in the mouth heightens its taste and aroma. Now is the moment that the flavor of the wine is discerned. First impressions tell whether it is intense or mild, sweet or dry etc. Then comes the actual flavor. If it is red wine, a fruity flavor may be distinguished – like berry, prune or fig and perhaps a tinge of some spice – pepper or clove or cinnamon. If it is a white wine you may perhaps feel the taste of apple, tropical or some citrus fruits, pear, or the taste may be more like butter, honey or herbs.

Swallowing the wine and noting its aftereffects comes last. What is the lingering taste left in the mouth? Does the wine leave a watery taste or does it have a consistency? How long does the taste linger in your mouth? Does it leave a bitter tang or do you feel like having some more? All these factors go towards the judging the quality of the wine.

For a novice in wine tasting it is enough if he or she can come to an overall judgment of the wine and conclude whether it will go along with the meal and whether it looks good, smells good and tastes good. As the skills sharpen one learns to understand terms like “its bouquet”, “well balanced”, “its expressiveness” etc. Constant practice aided with some expert tutelage will put you on the road to becoming another wine tasting “expert”. Happy tasting!!

The low percentage of alcohol in wine and other nutritional values give it a unique place among other strong alcoholic products. Drinking moderate amounts of wine as part of a healthy lifestyle has proved to be beneficial.

The one alcoholic drink that has respect among men and women is wine. Wine is considered to be a status symbol among the elites. The low percentage of alcohol in wine and other nutritional values give it a unique place among other strong alcoholic products. Wine is safe, while having a long chat, and the preferred choice for political discussions, since one hardly gets intoxicated. It is precisely the reason, why women love it. However, it could have made matters worse, if wine did have lots of alcohol content.

Drinking moderate amounts of wine as part of a healthy lifestyle has proved to be beneficial. From the ancient times, wine has been a staple drink in social gatherings, religious ceremonies, and private affairs. The natural processes and ingredients that automatically initiate fermentation within grapes make it a perfect source. Grapes grow abundantly in all the famous winemaking regions of the world. The best known wines are exclusively made from grapes. They contain the right proportion of sugars and fermenting agents that help in natural formation of wine.

Apart from making the heart “merry”, wine is known to have other benefits. Research has shown that people ingesting high levels of cheese fats were insulated against heart attacks due to presence of bioflavonoid. In such cases, wine come to their rescue, as it contains anti-oxidants to reduce bioflavonoid. Wine contains anti-oxidants present in grapes that may also help to prevent ageing-effects on the skin. A significant quantity can be ingested without having to worry about hangovers. Red wine may prevent and even halt development of atherosclerosis

The polyphenols in red wine maintain blood vessels by catalzing nitric oxide formation, which controls vascular tone. There is an overall reduction of low-density lipoproteins, and fat deposition. In ancient times, wine was considered to revive exhausted people better than water. Wine swabs and bandages were used to cover wounds. The alcohol within the wine cleaned the injury, while other agents helped in clotting. Modern society has included wine, as one of the ingredients that make perfect combinations in culinary preparations.

Red wine is coloured due to the use of grape varieties ranging from reddish, deep purple, or blue. The resulting wine is color classified using terms, such as garnet, black, dark red, light red, ruby red, opaque purple, deep violet, and so on. A light-bodied wine like, the Beaujolais Nouveau has low tannin content and go well with a variety of foods. Medium-bodied red wines like, Merlot and Chianti contains a moderate amount of tannins but is milder than higher ranked wines. Full-bodied red wines like Super Tuscans contain the highest amount of tannin and alcohol. Best known red wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah, Shiraz, Malbec, and Grenache.

White wines differ from red ones in color, composition and the taste. Under that skin, the pulpy part of a white grape is the same color as that of a red grape. White wine can be produced from red and white grapes. It has similar beneficial properties like red wine. Common grape varieties used to produce white wines are Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio, and so on.

The quality and consistency of wines produced at different wineries is assessed by wine tasters, who are employed by the retailers or by the winery itself. They describe their perception of appearance, flavors and aromas of the wine to categorize them on quality rankings. The proper analysis is done through impartial tasting procedures, such as blind-tasting, where the taster is unaware of the origin and colour of the wine. Wine tasters are key decision makers, who determine the price and status of a specific batch.

High levels of wine in the body can have adverse effects on the lifestyle. The level of triglycerides is greatly increased due to excess wine intake. This can exacerbate diabetes and heart complications. Alcohol increases estrogen level in the body and raises tumor growth rates, especially in case of breast cancer. The presence of sulfites, histamines, and tannins is a trigger for migraine attacks. Wine is also associated with weight gain, since the alcohol content carries a high calorific value compared to other constituents.
