A slow cooker crockpot is not just a great cooking appliance; it’s perfect for the beginner cook as well. It is the perfect way to make dishes like macaroni and cheese extra rich and sumptuous. They are also great for making dishes like pot roast, chicken and dumplings and a host of other delicious slow cooker crockpot recipes. However, it’s important to know a little bit about how these crockpots work and how to get the most out of them.

Before You Buy

Before you buy your crockpot, you’ll need to consider what you’ll be using it for. Remember that these cookers should only be filled about half-way or 2/3rds full when cooking. This will affect the amount of food you can actually cook in a crockpot. Small slow cookers may be ideal if you’re just cooking for two.

However, if you plan on using your crockpot for big dinners like Thanksgiving or Christmas, you may want to buy something larger. Crockpots also come in different shapes and these will affect how your dish looks in the end. Another thing you should consider is what you plan on cooking in your slow cooker. For instance, chickens and large-sized roasts fit better inside an oval-shaped cooker.

A really important thing to check when buying a slow cooker crockpot is the heating element. Make sure that this element is on the bottom as well as on the sides of the cooker, for even cooking. Also make sure that the liner is removable so you can clean it easier.

If you currently have a crockpot with no liner, it’s best to line it with a cooking bag before you use it. There are many different kinds of crockpots on the market today, some of which are quite advanced. Beginners should opt for simple plug-in options with just High and Low features.

Before You Cook

A slow cooker crock does work differently from conventional cooking appliances. This is why it’s important to keep a few handy cooking tips in mind before you make anything. It’s best to use your crockpot for the first time when you’re at home. After about 4 hours of cooking on Low, test the temperature. It should be about 140 degrees F. If it isn’t, you should probably get the slow cooker replaced.

For safety reasons, it is usually recommended that you cook on High for the first hour. After this, you can reduce it to Low. If you plan on putting frozen food in the slow cooker crockpot, it’s best to defrost it first. If you plan on putting your cooked food in the fridge, make sure you remove it from the liner first.

When you’re cooking with your slow cooker crockpot, make sure that you follow the instructions about layering. In general, vegetables should be placed on the bottom, since they do not cook as fast as meat does. Be careful about the spices and seasonings you use while cooking. Things like Tabasco sauce and cayenne pepper can become bitter if they are cooked too long.

In general, it’s best to add spices during the last hour of cooking. Dairy products like cheese should generally be added during the last half hour, unless otherwise stated in the recipe. Also remember that liquids cooked in a crockpot do not evaporate away, as when cooking with an ordinary saucepan. If the recipe is not specifically for crockpot cooking, make sure that you reduce the liquid by about ½.

Buying the right kind of slow cooker crockpot can make a big difference to your slow cooker crockpot recipes. The right model and features can mean better tasting food and a longer-lasting crock pot as well.

Join the best wine clubs online now! What is better than having the best bottles of wine in the world delivered straight to your home each month?

So you think that you know a lot about wine? Ok, you can taste the difference between a merlot and a cab without knowing which one is in which sample glass. Ok, you know that all wines that undergo a second fermentation are sparkling wines and that only those sparkling wines from Champagne, France can be called champagne. Well, here’s a question for you… are you enrolled in an online wine club? Ah ha! If the answer is no, then it is time to take your wine education to a higher level!

Why are wine clubs so special? Do you just get one bottle of wine a month? Why can’t I just go to the local wine store and pick up a bottle there? Let’s start with the first question. Wine clubs are special because they allow you to taste the best of the best! Most online wine merchants have panels of wine experts that spend a lot of time looking for and tasting the wines that are offered to wine club members. On the next question, it depends on the wine club, but common practice is that you receive at least two bottles of wine a month! Finally, it’s better to join a wine club online because the wine is delivered to your house and you do not have to waste time walking around wine stores aimlessly.

On to the good stuff… which online wine club should you join? Since Wine.com is the largest online wine merchant, they are a good place to start! I am a member of their “Build Your Cellar” club and have been able to taste wines such as Samuel’s Gorge 2004 Shiraz, which rates at 94 points! If you did not understand one word that I just said, you can join their “Discovery Tour” club for beginners and you even get to choose if you would like two red wines or one white and one red per month.

The Wine Messenger’s “Wine of the Month” club lets you choose between a Silver, Gold or Platinum membership and their Wine Discovery Membership gives you a discount off of every order that you enter! If you want to concentrate on specific regions, join one of the clubs at Morrrell Wine. You can get not one, not two, but three bottles a month from the American/Australian/New Zealand club or from the Italian club. I just joined the American Australian club and I cannot wait for my first shipment!

Join a wine club today and taste why wine club wines are the best in the world! http://www.squidoo.com/wheretobuywineonline

For people who are wine collectors or even wine enthusiasts an essential tool needed is that of Metal Wine Racks. Read on to learn more.

Metal wine racks are a superior choice if you have concerns about being able to safeguard the expensive wine collection you have assembled. Naturally, the metal material that they are constructed from means they are really sturdy and will last for many decades to come.

In addition to those sensible reasons for thinking of using a metal wine rack, you will also discover that these wine racks also normally integrate terrific designs and measured craftsmanship that will make them a piece you will be looking to show off just as much as your wine collection.

Additional Benefits

But even apart from the aesthetics of wine racks and the visual aspect that they contribute to any setting where they are found, they are very practical as well. A wrought iron wine rack is a very long-lasting piece of furniture that has a realistic function of protecting a wine collection.

And, since the material it is made of will most likely turn into a family heirloom that is handed down from one generation to the next. When cared for in a proper manner there is no telling how long a metal wine rack can provide to you a serviceable function in great fashion for your collection of dessert wines, red wines or white wines.

The table-top metal wine racks that are available on the market ordinarily come in a variety of different sizes. They range from medium size types of units that will hold approximately six to eight bottles of wine, which are most often used on countertops in kitchens or sideboards located typically in a dining room, to a small rack that accommodates one bottle and is commonly used to hold the wine during the dinner time.

When it comes to the larger wine racks constructed of metal, the styles differ from those that are very similar to cabinets that have multiple rows of holes to support the wine bottles on their sides in a very tasteful and tidy fashion. These would be looked at as more of a conventional wine storage rack and they will fit pretty well against a wall. An assortment of these have doors that close, and can even be locked if required, giving them the feel of an armoire except that they are not completely solid.

Functional Designs

There are also more flowing shapes and designs. Some have very shapely frames and the design of the spaces for the wine bottles are smartly integrated into the design and there isn’t the visual aspect of strict rows or shelves. With this kind, the back is normally flat so they will also work when setup against walls. Because of the flowing design, this kind of wine storage rack in general will hold a lower quantity of bottles of wine but some individuals favor the more flowing feel to the overall shape of the piece.

There are larger sized metal racks that have even greater design of a free-flow pattern to them, and one of the most prominent that has been seen is designed to appear very much like a tree with branches that look as if they are draping. These unique wine racks have spaces interlaced into the form of the tree where you can set the wine bottles in an upside down fashion and they contribute to the appearance to virtually become a part of the tree. While engaging and fun, this kind of metal wine rack also calls for the right type of setting and a great deal of space to allow for it to be appreciated.

The table-top metal wine racks that are available commonly come in a variety of different sizes. They have a range from a medium size unit that will carry six to eight wine bottles, which are most often employed on countertops in kitchens or sideboards in a dining room, to a small rack that holds one bottle and is commonly used to hold the wine during dinner time.

Here are some chef tips on making traditional beef stew. Here is a great solution to not having any broth around.

I like to make beef stew, especially as days get cooler. It’s a crock pot meal; tasty, easy, and it lasts for days. It also tastes generally the same no matter how much you try to play with the recipe. Unless you start adding strong flavors like chipotle (not a bad idea) or other off the wall ingredients, it’s going to come out as the same comforting beefy goodness that’s familiar to all of us. Here’s how I make it, with a couple of tips if you don’t have any stock around.

The Beef

The best stew beef is chuck. You want it fresh, with a decent marbling of the meat, just like if you were looking for primal steaks like ribeye. This is the best rule of thumb I can give when choosing beef: look for the cuts with the most intramuscular marbling. This isn’t the larger pieces of fat around the meat, it’s the fat in the muscle that you will be eating. For the tastiest, tenderest meat you want a lot of it, even if it’s for pot roast. That’s why I generally stay away from London broil or other big sirloin cuts. They don’t have the fat necessary to make it tasty.

Preferably you can find some bone-in chuck to give your broth some extra body and flavour. The bones of any meat are what contain the gelatin, and the gelatin is what gives body to the soup. If you can’t find bone in you can get gourmet and add some short ribs, or just get boneless.

The supermarket near me has small packs of short ribs for sale. They add fantastic flavor but the meat can fall apart after a long cook time. If your watching the budget go ahead and get the boneless chuck. Boneless beef is usually a better bargain because the bones are the first to spoil. This makes anything you buy with bones need a quick turn around time, and more of a risk for the butcher.

The Prep

When I get the beef home I trim up some of the fat and cut it into large chunks. You don’t want to go too small here because you want to have chunks of meat left after the long cooking process. Season the meat well with salt, pepper, and Worchestershire sauce. If you like, you can get funky with different spices, though it doesn’t make that much difference at the end. Garlic powder doesn’t hurt.

At this point if you can let the meat rest at room temperature for an hour before cooking or so I’d recommend it, but that’s probably me being too cheffy. Rest or not, throw it in the crock pot. Add some chopped veggies. Carrots, onions, celery, potatoes. Any combination that you like. I like the carrots so my ratio of carrots is a little higher. I don’t add anything too creative here, no sense messing with tradition.

The Broth

The broth arguably the most important part of a good stew. You have several options; bullion, broth, homemade broth, cream of mushroom soup, Liptons onion soup mix, beer, wine or water. All of them are flavored liquids used for the same purpose: to boil the meat. If you use beer or wine you will need to keep the ratio to about 25% of the total liquid in the stew. The rule here is that the ingredients must be covered in liquid. If you don’t have enough of one thing, just add some salted water. It’s very important that you have some salt in the stew at this point. This allows the salt to marry with the other ingredients, making each bite seasoned.

My order of preference is: homemade broth, bought broth (chicken), cream of mushroom soup, water (see below), onion soup mix, and bullion. Beer and wine I don’t really use, but it’ll happen if I feel the need. Here’s a little trick if you use water, it turns out surprisingly good. Season the water well and add some soy sauce and Worchestershire. It darkens it like broth and gives it good flavor. I like to stay away from the bullion powders, they are full of crap. When I use store-bought broth I use chicken, it’s generally a better quality then the beef.

Put your crock pot on high while your gone for the day, and dinner should be served when you get home. Don’t forget to check and re-season before serving. I don’t adorn my stew too much, though I will crush the potatoes as I spoon it into a bowl so they absorb more of the broth. No butter necessary.

Researchers at Columbia University in the U.S. have confirmed what rational mothers and fathers already knew: it’s the relationship we develop with our kids and the happiness of the family unit that counts the most.

The research included 1,000 children ranging from birth to age 7, and considered a number of different factors: vocabulary, reading, academic tests as well as family characteristics. Teachers and parents also rated the children’s behavior.

Jane Waldfogel, co-author of the study, commented on the consequences of a mother returning to the workplace, “In reality, lots of other things change the minute she goes out to work, including the quality of childcare, the mother’s mental health, and the relationships with the family and the household income. We’ve examined all of these.” While the study did find that some infants raised by full-time working mothers scored slightly lower on cognitive tests, the positive effects of working mothers offset the negatives.

The outcome of this study is in sharp contrast to prior studies, namely the 2008 UNICEF research, which concluded that mothers who went back to work before their child’s 1st birthday were “gambling” with their child’s development. A similar conclusion was reached by an earlier study from the Institute for Social and Economic Research at Essex University in the U.K.

My blog, Career Women Make Bad Mothers, highlighted a number of the positive effects working mothers have on their children, which have also been confirmed by this latest research. What’s most interesting about this recent study is the acknowledgement that children are also impacted by the family dynamics – i.e. a happy family makes a happy child. Let’s consider some of the other positive effects of women pursuing their careers after childbirth.

Fathers Benefit
Dads can benefit by mothers working as they feel less pressure in providing economic security for the family. Perhaps it affords them the flexibility to make different career choices. They also are able to improve their work-life balance as they are more involved with the children in order to support the mother’s career. The Boston College’s Center for Work & Family reported that today’s dads equate being a good father with’ being there’ and spending time with their kids, rather than just being the breadwinner.

Mother-Father Partnership Benefits
Sharing the responsibility for financial security as well as the family’s well-being results in mothers and fathers appreciating the role of breadwinner as well as parent. Neither role is particularly easy, but understanding first-hand what’s involved makes each partner appreciate the contribution of the other.

Had I not had a career, I couldn’t have fathomed why my other half had to work such long hours. (Brilliance doesn’t happen between 9-5.) Having worked hard to further my own career, I understand all too well what it takes to be successful. Conversely, had my other half not actively participated in the upbringing of our children, he couldn’t possibly have understood the mental challenge of dealing with two-year old tantrums or teenage mood swings.

Mothers Benefit
Women can benefit enormously from a challenging career, bringing back to the home energy, enthusiasm and relevant skills such as problem solving, strategic planning, and resolving conflict just to name a few. I would also argue that it’s this switching back and forth between the two environments which keeps you fresh and invigorated and enables you to bring patience and perspective to each environment as a result of stepping back.

Organizations Benefit
While many professions have an equal or larger intake of women at entry level, the number of female professionals falls dramatically at the senior levels. Certainly one explanation for this decline is the number women who do not continue with their professions after starting a family. Organizations need gender balance in order to ensure sound decision making, innovation and alignment with customers’ and shareholders’ interests. Organizations benefit when professional women return from maternity leave and continue to contribute to the growth and sustainability of the business.

Don’t wait for another study to come out to determine whether you are making the right choices for your family. Use your common sense. Be logical. Know yourself and take decisions with confidence. Everyone benefits when women happily combine career and family – women benefit, men benefit, children benefit, and your profession benefits.

Christine is an author, professional speaker and consultant and her mission is to empower young women to have the confidence to combine career & family, as well as to support organizations in their efforts to promote women in business. Her inspiration comes from balancing her own high-powered career in international banking with an active family life for over 20 years.
A savory beef stew is quick and easy to put together if you have a crock pot to cook it in. Back in the day my grandmother made this recipe in a pressure cooker to cut down the time needed to ensure the meat was melt in your mouth tender and all the flavors blended together to create this mouth watering dish. Today, we can achieve the same results with a crock pot.

I have several family members who are now venturing out on their own and starting their own homes, or going off to college. One of the first things I love to give is a crock pot. This is a versatile piece of equipment and it can even be used in some college dorms. I even tuck in a couple of easy recipes and some tips to get them started. Here is one of them for making beef stew. Adapted from an old recipe of my grandmother’s, It is simple and anyone can follow the directions to make a delicious, hearty meal with little effort. The pot does most of the work of cooking the meal.

You will need:

A crock Pot. I prefer one with a removable crock, but they all work well.

2 pounds of chuck or rump roast cut into 1 inch cubes. You can also purchase stew beef at the grocery. This is usually provided already cut into large chunks. I will usually cut each of these chunks into smaller, bite sized pieces.

1 cup chopped onions. You can cut these into large chunks if you prefer a chunky stew. Otherwise dice to about 1/4 inch pieces.

1 cup diced celery

1 cup carrot rounds. Cut the carrots into rounds that are bite sized. After washing and removing the ends, simply cut 1/4 inch slices from the carrots.

4 large potatoes, cut into bite sized pieces. I love using the buttery gold potatoes or small reds cut in half, but an Idaho will be fine..

2 cups canned or fresh tomatoes. I like to use the canned, chopped stewed tomatoes for a little extra layer of flavor.

2 teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1 bay leaf

3 tablespoons flour

2 teaspoons olive or vegetable oil

2 cans or 1 quart chicken broth

1 can cream of mushroom soup

Saute’ the onion, celery and carrots in the oil until the onion becomes translucent. Coat the meat pieces in the flour. Cook the meat with the onion mixture until just browned all over. This will add a good flavor to the stew. You could just add it to the pot without browning if you are in a hurry, but I suggest that you take the few minutes required for this step. It will give you a better flavor in the end.

Pour this mixture of meat and vegetables into the crock pot. drop in the bay leaf. You can go ahead and turn the pot on to let it get started heating up.

Pour the chicken broth, tomatoes, salt and pepper in, stirring well to mix the salt and pepper. Add the potatoes and give it one more stir.

If you haven’t already, set the pot on high and cover. Let cook about 5-7 hours or until the meat is tender.

30 minutes before ready to serve, stir in the can of mushroom soup.

Heat your bread and toss together a quick salad. Serve with a steaming bowl of this hearty beef stew and you will see smiles around the table as your family and friends take comfort in the time-tested meal.

What happens to the real you when you become a mother? Where is the person you used to be in amongst the day to day struggles of raising a young family? How do you blend the old you, with the new you, this new woman they now call mother?

I’m hankering for my next tattoo.

It never ceases to surprise me that I should have found such an interest for them since becoming a mother.

I rather suspect it’s for the same reasons I got married instead of remaining de-facto. Or the reason I married first and then had children. As opposed to doing what most of my friends did, which was to have children first, and then marry.

And whilst to marry, then have children, or indeed, marrying at all, seems to be the conservative option, the truth is, if everyone else is NOT getting married, and everyone else is having kids prior to tying the knot, then my actions where not the conservative ones, in fact, I was doing what no-one else was doing. I was doing the opposite. I’ve always done the opposite. Mostly just to be a little shit I expect. There has always been a little me inside shaking my fist yelling out, “I will not comply!”

And then there was always a bigger me inside, a wiser me, that said, “Well you don’t have to comply but you know, one should always keep it civil. So why don’t you pick something low key to not comply over, you know, don’t make a fuss, just keep the non compliance reasonable, don’t set fire to anything, try not to destroy public property because they’ll just lock you up, and if you must chose to not shave armpit hair to make a point, make sure you wear a good quality lipstick.”

My rebellions have always been understated affairs.

Marriage appealed because no-one else was doing it

Getting my husband to take my surname appealed because no-one else was doing it

Getting my nose pierced as a professional business woman, working in the city, meeting “Executive Business Sorts” appealed because no-one else was doing it (I rather liked watching CEO of Big Wig Company crane his neck to work out if he did indeed just get a glint of diamond shining off my nose in the late morning Sydney sunshine. I do half think I was inspired to see if I would get fired for having nose pierced. I rather liked the glamour of being sacked. Sadly no such dismissal came my way).

And getting tatts appealed because no-one else, that is, no other mummies, were doing it.

Oh sure.

They all did it in their teens, their 20′s. They pierced noses, had stars tattooed on their ankles and butterflies on their stomachs in their heady days of youth – precisely when I wasn’t interested in doing it. No, I seemed to want to wait until it was unseemly to do it. You know, when people look at you and wonder if the reason you’re doing things like this is because you’re mid nervous breakdown (actually, this could be the real reason). Or they wonder perhaps it’s because you’re having a midlife crisis (how scary to think I have reached the last few years of my thirties and actually qualify for mid life crisis!)

But instead, they don’t realise that it’s just the juvenile rebel in me.

It is as though my small inner rebellion, my next tattoo, is concrete evidence, that I am not part of the mold, that I broke the mold, that getting a tatt sets me apart from the conservativeness of motherhood. That somehow by getting ink it will make me someone different, that it highlights my individuality, it rebels from all the demands that motherhood places on me. It says, “I am not a real mummy. I will never be a real mummy. The idea of being a real mummy makes me feel trapped inside. It makes me feel like I am dying inside.”

I have this picture of a 1960′s housewife, dressed in her apron, standing mutely at the stove, smiling benignly at her perfect family, her perfect husband. And I want to tear the image to shreds, I want to scream at her to stop smiling. I feel fear prick in my heart that this image might be me. That somehow the vibrant woman I was prior to having children might morph into this plastic version of a person. That all the mummy gigs will turn me into a Stepford wife, that next time I look in the mirror I’ll be smiling benignly even if my heart is crying and screaming out to be released.

And so I see the tattooing, the ink, the planning of the ink, the beautiful images I picture being drawn upon my skin, as a way of celebrating that I’m still alive inside, that I’m still a person, that I am yet to be assimilated into the Borg. I’m not just a number with the word Mummy trailing after it.

It’s not that I don’t see any beauty in motherhood. It’s not that I don’t experience deep, transcendent moments holding my children. That dancing with Ella, or sweeping Lola’s now, very long, straight hair from her face doesn’t bring me joy. It’s not that I don’t take my girls in my arms and sweep them into the air and watch their eyes light up and not feel a passion that is almost inexplicable to describe. There are moments in motherhood, moments that shine with truth, an inner truth that hold a beauty, where I’m connected with the nurturer in myself, the protector, the teacher, and in those fleeting moments I feel whole again. I am not searching for me in amongst the days of accidental parenthood. In those moments I am complete, both sides of me, the wild girl who wants to drink vodka til the sun is rising, and the mother who wants to lay beside her little girl and hold her safely in her arms, are the same woman. And I don’t feel the lack. I don’t feel the need to differentiate myself from the boredom of motherhood, that 60′s housewife, trapped in the day to day drudgery of cleaning and cooking and bum wiping. I don’t feel that need to yell out, “I am more than the sum total of my motherhood parts!”

I used to wonder in my 20′s if I would ever have children.

I felt that as soon as I bore my own clan, it would be their lives that became important and my life would slowly fade into the greying world of motherhood, no longer an entity in my own right, merely a tool for the progression of my offspring’s lives.

But even though I fought against the survival of my own ego, my own life, I knew that if I had a child (for the longest time I only saw myself with one child, a girl child) that she and I would be close. But I realise now that my image I had of myself and my daughter, wandering around Manhattan, me looking sensational in groovy boho outfit, daughter equally gorgeous. Me, fabulous career woman off to book signing launch, daughter fabulous side-kick, was all about my ego too. Daughter was nothing more than the ultimate accessory to me. Perhaps why I only saw myself as having one? God knows how one would manage several children in that scene? After all I was fabulous career woman, tottering along in high heels, not Maria from the bloody Sound of Music, taking them for a stroll in Central Park getting them to sing about their favourite things.

I saw my independent life as colour. I saw a life with children as grey. I saw a life with several lovers, perhaps some I married, and perhaps some I didn’t, as colour. I saw life with one man, living in a house mortgaged to the hilt, 2.5 children and a dog, as the ultimate in suburban suicide. I couldn’t understand how people could aim so low. Demand so little. What on earth I wondered, would motivate people to sell their dreams for the suburban nightmare of everydayness, of conservativeness, of boringness? Why would you pick a monotonous life of wife-dom, motherhood and paying bills? Who I wondered would want that as their dream? And why? Why on earth, why?

But you do end up wanting that don’t you?

One day you’re at a bar full of thin, waif, model types and you’re all sipping wonderfully overpriced cocktails and you see that world for what it really is, a transparent, glossy, nothing-ness. And you find yourself aching for something more, something meaningful, something that your soul resonates with.

And then of course you have another vodka, and you find someone who smokes cigarettes and then you feel 16 again sitting outside being naughty smoking and you forget about that soul ache, that need for something more.

But once you realise that you want it. That you want children, a family, a life mate, a house (God who knew I would lust after the concept of having a house, a big house with a garden, somewhere for my kids to play on swings and jump on trampolines and play hide and seek, that I would lust after the dream of paying a mortgage, of being able to knock great big nails in the wall to hang my artwork wherever I wanted. That renting, or living in an apartment shoebox, or wanting something as mundane as a proper laundry would be the stuff of inspiration to me?) Who knew that I would crave that suburban sameness, the suburban dream? Who knew what I once saw as suburban madness was to turn into the only thing I could ever remember wanting with every fibre of my being?

Is it any wonder that one is driven to drink?

For pity’s sake. Can we all get on the same page here? Bohemian life of wandering around the globe chasing down dreams, or motherhood with wifehood and mortgagehood? Pick which one and get on with it!

The duplicity of even our own wishes and desires!

Don’t make me a mother! I am me! I refuse to be part of this con, this joke, this oppression of person!

Please, please, please, make me a mother! I want to share my life with my children. I want to watch them grow, to feed, to nature and care for another being, to cradle them, to care for them. I want to feel the sun come out when I see them smile.

And that duplicity continues within me.

I struggle with that, at my Mummy gigs I struggle with it.

And I practice ‘surrender’ on days when the struggle threatens to overwhelm me.

And on the best days, on the days when I am fully alive as a person because I am a mother, on the days I am illuminated by it, I remember to be thankful for it.

I remember to watch the glow inside me, to remember that it is there because of the decision to have my babies. They are the reason for my completeness.

And on other days, the less complete days, well I can get a similar glow from vodka, it’s more of an internal heat followed by a sharp cough but it’s not a bad substitute.

I do love that real glow, the one that steals up on you when I put the girls to bed and watch them sleeping. My hand rests on their little bodies, as I watch their breathing, the fall and rise of their chests. I can feel that glow diffusing into my cells, travelling through my skin, flooding my being. I feel the tears well up in my eyes, wondering what I would do without them. How would my spirit cope if they were taken from me? How would I cope if I were taken from them? I would I know, struggle with death himself to stay with them, I would fiercely fight him, strangle him to make sure I could sit forever by their side, watching them, holding them, lying down next to them, breathing in the breath that they exhale.

Believe it or not, Australia is the fourth-largest exporter of wine in the world, with some 400,000,000 liters of wine exported per year. That's over 105 million gallons, for you U.S. readers!

It’s true that real sommeliers don’t often think Australian wines when considering the finest vineyards in the world. However, believe it or not, Australia is the fourth-largest exporter of wine in the world, with some 105 million gallons of wine exported per year. That’s over 400,000,000 liters, for you non U.S. readers! And with as many liters they export, Australians also typically consume just as much wine themselves as they export! Obviously there must be something high-quality about the wines from Australia if there are over 200 million gallons of it consumed every year! Let’s look at some very interesting facts about these wines that are appreciated the world over.

One of the reasons that Australian wines do so well is the climate of this continent. While it may have been somewhat difficult to work around by those who first began cultivating grapes for wines, they soon learned how to adapt to the climate and found themselves successfully growing a large variety of grapes for some very fine wines. This selection typically includes Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Riesling. These wines are always made from imported grapes as the continent has no native grapes of its own. The fact that Australian vineyard owners could adapt themselves to an unfamiliar climate with foreign grapes to become the fourth-largest exporter of wine in the world shows their dedication to the science and art of wine making.

Award Winners

The Australian label Penfolds Grange has won more than 50 gold medals in the past fifty or so years since its inception. The 1971 won first prize at the Wine Olympics in Paris; the 1990 was named ‘Red Wine of the Year’ by the Wine Spectator magazine in 1995. Some wine critics have called this “the world’s most exotic and concentrated wine,” beating out many famous wines of France and Italy.

Many other Australian wines have held their own in wine competitions around the world and have been recognized by wine critics and enthusiasts alike.

Their Ups and Downs

There were many years when wines vineyards of Australia were plagued by phylloxera, a small pest that infests vineyards. When they finally overcame this infestation, vineyards were typically producing sweet and fortified wines. Because of their popularity, the government of Australia actually paid growers to pull their vines in order to level the market. This has been repeated in recent years as there has been an oversupply and short sales.

However, with the rise in popularity of organic products, Australian wines have once again gained their popularity. Many vineyards now are finding that their demand is increasing for organic and biodynamic wines, and their upsurge is once again returning. Australia has even hosted the International Biodynamic Wine Forum that includes organic and biodynamic vineyard owners from around the world.

I’m sure you’ve all seen the James Bond movies; well my life makes his look like an afternoon at the mall. You want to talk about suspense, top secret information, mysterious happenings and romance on a daily basis, then my friends, you have come to the right place.

My world is full of suspense. Let me tell you what happened just yesterday. I decided to bake some homemade wheat bread. I followed the instructions, allowed the dough to rise in the pan and then turned on the oven. After the allotted time, I peeked in and found that the bread was golden on the top and looked ready to come out.

I carefully removed the first loaf from the oven, slid a knife around the outside and turned the pan upside down. For about ten seconds it looked absolutely perfect. Then it happened. The bread began to slowly implode along a center crack caving in like an asphalt road during an earth quake.

Quickly, I transferred the mangled mess back into the pan and returned it to the oven for another twenty minutes. Later my daughter said that the loaf tasted good but looked “demented”.

Now who would have guessed THAT was going to happen?

As a secret agent I am entrusted with many bits of top secret information only to be released on a “Need to Know” basis. Like, why my fourteen year old daughter no longer likes N but thinks that A is really cute. And that her best friend T has a crush on L, M, J and F. I would tell you what name each of the letters represents, but then I would be forced to kill you…

Also I am sworn to secrecy about that unfortunate tuna sandwich incident at school, what my husband really thinks about that guy down the hall with the obnoxious laugh, and who is responsible for the new dent in the back rear fender of the BMW. (That would be me.)

I spend my days solving mysteries that would stump a detective of lesser valor. Like why a set of speakers is sitting in the hall plugged into an outlet but not attached to any music producing device? Or how come the pens in my room keep disappearing no matter how often I buy new ones?

How about this. Our black lab is sitting at my side, staring up at me and whining. Is she trying to tell me

A) one of the kids has fallen down the well,
B) our house is being invaded by a swarm of killer cats or
C) she wants to go outside but no one will open the door?

It could be any one of the three and that’s the challenge.

Perhaps my favorite part of being a secret agent is the romance that comes with it. I get kissed or hugged by four handsome young men at least once a day. I get called sweetheart, honey and beautiful constantly, and I get to wear skimpy sexy clothing… ok, well what I mean is that I gained a little weight and my clothes are all too tight and revealing now, but hey I can imagine what I want.

Yes, between trying to deduct what to make for dinner, interrogating a teenager about his evenings covert activities, making sure the new box of cookies doesn’t fall into enemy hands and spying on my son and his new girlfriend in the family room, I have a pretty exciting life.

But just remember… it’s a secret so don’t tell anyone.

How to choose a bottle of good French wine? How is Elite French wine made? What is French wine ranking system?

First, let’s decide: what we will drink. A French wine has its own ranking system.

Table wine has the lowest rank. It is the cheapest and the simplest. Local wine is ranked slightly higher. It is produced in certain regions of France.

The next stage is higher-quality wine produced in a limited territory. Its production techniques is under the strict control. Manufacturers are required to use only certain varieties of grapes growing on the particular wine industry castle’s soil.

Finally, the highest ranked wine category – aristocratic “controlled by descent” wine. This wine is bought by collectors and sold at auctions for the crazy money. Requirements for its manufacturing are much more rigid. For example, even if the grape harvest has been abundant, there is a strict limit of producing elite wines. Prestigious wine must me limited!

How to choose elite wine?

First of all, pay attention to the label. It should not be garish or colorful. Typically, the better the wine, the label looks more modest. And if you choose the higher-class wine, it must have three words in its inscription. First – Appellation (winemaking community), or Chateau (Castle). Then the name of the community or castle. And the key word “control” means that the wine is controlled by descent.

Very often these three words are typed in very small font. But they are the key! If they are not on the label, the wine could not be considered elite. The best French wines have also “Grand Cru” classification. Most often this inscription can be found on the label after the name of vineyard.

What should you pay attention to when choosing wines from different regions of France?

The most famous are Bordeaux and Burgundy wines.

Individual wine-making households – Chateau – are located Inside the Bordeaux wine-growing areas. Therefore, when choosing Bordeaux wine you must draw your attention to the name of the castle.

Each Chateau has its unique flavor, identity and bouquet. Even if a few castles are located in the neighborhood and use the same sort of wine grapes, they produces quite different wines. Indeed, each Chateau has its own secrets, which are handed down for several centuries. Unlike Bordeaux, Burgundy is famous by wine-growing communities, which may belong to several tens of producers.
Pay attention to the producer of the wine – its taste and smell depends on its producer.

How do size and length of the bottle corks characterize the quality of wine?

The real connoisseurs of French wine knows what the cork means. Firstly, it must be made from cork oak bark. Secondly, the name of the community or castle as well as the harvest year must be printed there. The longer the cork, the more expensive drink, and the higher its quality. But short pressed cork is a sign of cheap wine.

As is the convention, the long-lived wine corks is changed every 15 years.

As for the bottle, the most famous elite wine bottle is called “Magnum” (1.5L). The fact is that “Magnum” is used for very high quality wine of the best years.

One of the rarest wines in the world is called ice wine. You will not find it in your local wine shop and you probably have never heard of it. True wine aficionados refer to ice wine as the ultimate dream for wine collectors but few will ever experience it for themselves.

Ice wine is a sweet dessert wine with a medium to full body. Those who have been fortunate enough to taste ice wine say that it has tropical overtones and bouquet. It also tends to have a slightly lower alcohol content than other table wines. The sweetness of the ice wine is balanced by higher acidic levels which keep it from being cloyingly sweet.

Ice wine can only be produced in specific weather conditions found in few places in the world. It is produced mainly in the Canadian Pacific Northwest and a few wineries in Germany. Because the process is so sensitive and difficult, ice wine is only made in small quantities.

High quality fully ripened grapes must be hard frozen while still on the vine and stay that way for a few days. Temperature must stay at approximately 17-18 degrees Fahrenheit during that time. This does not occur until well after the traditional harvest time so the right weather must occur before the grapes begin to rot.

The frozen grapes are then picked by hand at night as the grapes must be pressed while still frozen in order to produce ice wine. Only the running juices of these frozen grapes will be used to make the ice wine. These juices have a high concentration of the naturally occurring sugars which is why it creates such a sweet wine. This juice can then take months to fully ferment, as opposed to the days or weeks required by most table wines.

As you can tell by the sensitive and detailed process, ice wine is produced in limited quantities. Some years, wineries will not be able to even attempt the ice wine if the weather conditions aren’t right. This scarcity is what creates the rarity of ice wines. Due to the rarity, the cost of ice wine is prohibitive to most wine lovers. A wine collector will find themselves paying an easy six figures to purchase one small bottle of ice wine.

Obviously, although many may dream of experiencing ice wine, the majority of us will never be able to afford it. Even if you are wealthy, ice wine can still be difficult to find. Even though the price will still be high, you may be able to find a wine maker with some on hand by checking with wineries in the Pacific Northwest. Those who have tasted ice wine tell us that it is worth the effort.

I can still recall fondly my childhood. Years spent playing with my assorted dolls and their accessories. Creating imaginary worlds of glamor and adventure.

I can still recall fondly my childhood. Years spent playing with my assorted dolls and their accessories. Creating imaginary worlds of glamor and adventure. My dolls were an outlet-as for most little girls the opportunity to forage into the social realm with the proverbial security blanket. A 12 ” blonde-haired perfectly proportioned piece of perfection. Gaggles of girls would flock together with their representations of themselves in tow. These dolls provided the opportunity to socialize and play in a group setting.

I never gave the boys much thought. Until I had a little boy who the other day requested a doll. I had always thought the boys busied themselves with their trucks and action figures etc. Being the progressive thinker that I am and knowing as an educator that all children play with dolls as a means to dramatic expression, I said “yes”. My husband reluctantly agreed to his demands but only when the verbiage was changed to “action figure”.

Armed with his approval, I searched the internet for ‘dolls for boys’. Much to my chagrin, there were virtually no dolls and mostly articles discussing the fear of doll play as a signal to homosexuality. I tried a number of different phrases including “action figures”, “Ken dolls”, and sports heroes. I even tried “articulating dolls” in the hopes of making the blasted computer understand that I wanted a Barbie doll but one that was male. My search led me to collectibles, movie icons, and figurines costing well over $50.

What happened to the dolls of yesterday? They were a couple of bucks and children had them by the dozen. Instead of coming away with a toy, I discovered a new prejudice-the anti-male. This is of course, ironic as I am a feminist and applauded the line of Barbies that allowed her to “be anything” and “do anything”. But in our quest to show our little girls strength and beauty and provide them with oodles of confidence, have we canceled out our male counterpart? This is apparent from the meager selection of ‘boy dolls’. The representation of the male ranges from the feminized “boy toy” that Ken has become to physiques on steroids.

Sexual connotations abound from Ken’s dress to his lack of occupation. Today’s Ken doll comes equipped with little more than a surf board and flip flops. He drives a pink car and I kid you not one of the lines of the doll is called “Hottie” Ken. Need I say more? How ironic that we feminists who were up in arms at the unrealistic representation of Barbie’s figure are allowing our male counterpart to be perceived as an effeminate slacker who’s only aspirations are fashion and the beach. A 15 year old nephew of mine offhandedly said that Ken is just one of Barbie’s accessories. How astute of that teenager to recognize that for all appearances, Ken was given the same consideration as one of Barbie’s handbags or shoes.

To the other extreme are the grotesquely muscled “action figures”, who are more like figurines and resemble aliens or monsters. They are icons of movie heroes or rescue heroes etc…and not one in the slightest resemble any man I know. This is not to say that thousands of boys delight in their mock fighting and evil vs good dramatic play. But my child is only 4 and does not relate to the representations on the movie screen. He nods in recognition at the mention of Batman and the like but is not interested in that type of play…not yet.

Where are the toys of yesteryear? I distinctly recall cowboys with brown horses (not purple glittered My Little Pony), Indians, astronauts and The Lone Ranger. Why can’t Ken come with a basketball or a briefcase, go mountain climbing or ride a bike. Be a construction worker, a stockbroker or a chef or drive anything that’s not pink?

In short: Have we gone so far the other direction that we have forgotten the male perspective?

If I am in error, please find me the site or store that I can purchase a male physique doing/wearing and acting like a regular guy so that I can buy for my kid his doll. In the meantime I’m still searching….

France has an ideal climate for producing wine, couple that with perfect soil conditions and availability of water and you have the best location in the world for wine production. With thirteen different regions that grow many different kinds of grapes, is it no wonder that France is teeming with vineyards and wineries?

When most people think of wine, French wine will automatically come to mind. Even many of the names of wines are from the regions that they originated from in France. Burgundy and Champagne are two wines that everyone will recognize that were created in those regions of France. I am sure that many more come to mind as well if you are a wine lover.

Making wine is a time-honored tradition in France. For hundreds of years, it was produced and consumed by peasants all over the country. Obviously, the French have learned a thing or two about creating wine over the course of all that time. Many will swear that French wines are the best wines in all the world and few will disagree.

Many wine lovers will choose French wines over any other. The choices are almost endless for French wine including within the same wine types. For example, if you test two Burgundy wines from two different vineyards you will experience variations in the aroma, taste, and even the texture of the wine. These variations and infinite possibilities are what give French wine its fine reputation.

True French wines are some of the best wines in the world. One way to tell a true French wine is by the label. New world wines list the ingredients on the bottle label while the French still label their old world wines with the location it was produced. This ancient way of labeling their wines has left a touch of romance in French wine production.

French wines have been stars in the wine world for hundreds of years. Everything from the standard Burgundy wine to the very classiest Champagne is created in France. Price ranges begin at a few dollars a bottle so everyone can afford to try French wines. For true wine lovers, there are rarer versions to be had. Of course, the older or more rare the wine is, the price will be higher accordingly.

Needless to say, when you taste a true French wine you will know the difference. The world’s finest grapes grown in the ideal conditions help to create wines with the aroma and tastes of no other wines. The difference is the emphasis on quality from the grapes themselves to the traditional process that creates the wine. These are just a few of the reasons so many still prefer French wines above all others.

Summer break may not officially be over for another month, but I’m getting a leg up on our family’s back-to-school preparations. Years past have taught me something, plan for it early and get it done!

The advantages to doing it early are many – stores are well stocked with supplies, we can easily find the sizes we need for clothing and uniforms, we aren’t stressed out by to-do’s in the weeks leading up to school starting, the family calendar is made well in advance so we can work out any conflicts before they occur, and most importantly mom is happy that it’s all taken care of.

So, what exactly do my back to school preparations involve? Well, they mainly lie in three areas: Clothing, School Supplies and Scheduling.

Clothing – I start by cleaning out the kids’ closets and drawers. While I’m cleaning I take inventory of what still fits and make of list of what they need. I then enter that list of shorts, pants, shirts, socks, underwear and shoes into a simple spreadsheet. I print this and keep it in my purse as a convenient checklist while we shop.

School Supplies – Most school’s update their school supplies lists on their websites well in advance of school starting. I print lists for each child and then comparison shop online for the best prices. If you don’t have time to comparison shop (or don’t feel like it), Walmart generally has very competitive prices and they are well-stocked on everything.

Scheduling – Back to school is the time of year that our family calendar “blows up”. With all of the drop-offs, pick-ups, practices, car pools and bus routes to keep track of for three kids, it’s no wonder! Getting as much of this information as possible in advance of the start of the school year helps me to prepare for how my husband and I will split up the drives, contact other parents to arrange for car pools and determine what time each child’s bedtime and wake-up needs to be. The earlier I get it all in the schedule, the sooner I can identify conflicts and resolve them.

Try doing your family’s back to school preparations in advance this year and enjoy the rest of summer break, stress-free!

Wine consumption has become more and more popular over the years. With so much money going into wine both as an investment and for later consumption, the history of the wine will always be in question. Bearing this in mind, many people often wonder how they can expertly store their wine and take care of it at the same time.

The way you store your wine is very important. Wine stored properly can lead to euphoria, while storing it wrong can lead to depression. When you open and taste a bottle of wine that has properly been stored, it can be illustrious indeed, while tasting a bottle of poorly stored wine can be quite the letdown. Many times, drinking a bottle of wine that was poorly stored is just like drinking vinegar.

To properly store wine, several factors need to be present, such as temperature, humidity, lighting, the cleanliness of your storage area, the angle of the bottle while it is stored, and the vibration of the bottle on the rack. The ideal temperature is the most important, as you should keep it around 50 degrees at all times. The lower temperature can help to age the wine. Make sure any fluctuation in the temperature happens slowly.

The humidity level for storing wine should be around 70%, although it is okay to keep it 10% above or below the 70% level. When you have too high of a humidity temperature, the labels can easily rot, which can definitely affect the wine’s value. While if the humidity gets too low, around 50%, the cork could shrink and bring air into the wine, which would ruin it.

The angle that wine is stored is very important as well. It is very important to let the wine come in contact with the cork because that would prevent the cork from drying out which can cause air to sip into the wine. Try to keep the wine out of direct light, as light can ruin any type of wine. Light creates premature aging of the wine. Your best bet is to store wine in a dark location.

Preventing damage to the wine from sediment requires you to store wine in a location that is free of vibration. If you store wine in places that have no vibration, it will give the sediment in the bottle much time to settle. Vibrations can never be a good thing for wine, as the sediment becomes misplaced and can ruin the wine or shake it to the point where it tastes bad.

To preserve the quality and increase the value of your wine, storage and care is very important. Storing it in a proper location can also bring the best taste. Among wine enthusiast, nothing is more disappointing than waiting several years to open a bottle of fine wine, only to find that it is nothing but vinegar.

A good way to prevent this from happening is to take better care of your wine. To care for wine properly is not difficult it just takes the right conditions and location. Storage and care is so very important these days because everyone loves a fine wine.

The crockpot is a great little addition to your kitchen that not only helps to make dinner time a lot easier but it also gives you a healthy way to cook a wide variety of foods. One of the best things about slow cooking in the crockpot is that you will not ever have to worry about burnt foods or meats that are too tough to chew or cut through.

What Can I Make in the Crockpot?

The crockpot is amazingly versatile and this simple appliance can be used to make everything from desserts to hearty soups to a host of delicious meals using all of the foods you love.

Although most all meats are ideal for the crockpot, some types definitely cook better than others using slower cooking methods. One notable benefit to slow cooking is that cheaper cuts of meat tend to work the best in the crockpot.

Chicken on the bone or whole fryer chickens are also great for making soups and stews. In addition, inexpensive cuts of beef or pork that might normally turn out tough in the oven will be tender and succulent after cooking the crockpot.

To maximize the taste of meats you may want to lightly coat them in flour and brown in a hot saucepan or skillet before adding to the crockpot. You should also remove fat from all types of meat and remove the skin from poultry before cooking in the crockpot. This helps to bring out the meat’s natural flavors and will also give a more appetizing appearance to dishes such as soups and stews.

Besides meats, you can also make a number of wonderful vegetarian dishes in the crockpot as well as casseroles, chili, pasta dishes, and even sweet desserts.

Converting Conventional Recipes for the Crockpot

Do you have books and recipe boxes full of instructions for making all of your favorite foods in the oven or on the stovetop? Did you know that you can convert most all recipes for the slow cooker?

Recipes that are intended for the oven or stovetop which include some type of moisture in them can easily be converted to make in the crockpot instead. Dishes with moisture, such as water, broth, sauce, soup, and wine, for example, are the best for slow cooking as the foods are marinated together for hours at a time, which brings out their natural flavors wonderfully.

When converting recipes for the crockpot you will want to cut all of the liquids used in half. If your oven recipe calls for six cups of water, you will only need three for the crockpot.

Adjusting cooking times is another important factor of making recipes work well in the crockpot. The crockpot typically features two settings, low and high. The lowest setting on crockpots use heat at approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is about 95 degrees Celsius while the high settings cook at about 300 degrees (150 Celsius).

One hour of cooking time in the oven or on the stove usually converts to eight hours in the crockpot on the low setting or four hours on the high setting.

The best crockpot recipes are not always meant for the slow cooker. You can quickly convert most recipes that were intended for the oven for use in the crockpot by making a few simple adjustments. Easy crockpot recipes use ingredients that complement each other to maximize natural flavors for delicious combinations of foods.

Carefully chosen commercial wine rack can significantly influence your sales. Following three easy steps will help you pick out the right wine storage rack for your store.

Commercial wine racks are generally divided in two main groups. First group is represented by in-store Commercial wine racks, developed for high traffic areas of the store to stimulate sales. The second group consists of cellar or warehouse Commercial wine racks, predominately made for storage of large quantities of bottles before they hit the shelves. Primary mission of every wine storage rack is to properly facilitate wine bottles. Originally wine storage racks were designed to prevent cork from drying and therefore spoiling the content of the bottle. Today literally each wine storage rack is made to prevent cork from drying. But other factors like positioning the rack within the store, choosing the right design and color can significantly influence sales figures.

Many small to mid-size shop owners tend to purchase their commercial wine rack without giving it any thorough consideration. This partly originates from the lack of knowledge about the impact of a well chosen wine rack on customer purchasing behavior and on the overall quality impression of the shop.

How can you make the most of your new commercial wine storage rack?

Firstly you should carefully plan where your new wine rack should stand. There are many studies done on where in the process of shopping a customer is most likely to notice your wine collection and buy a bottle. Those studies on customer purchasing behavior can be found on web. A 2005 research in Denmark supermarkets for example showed that wine buyers bought more olives, fruit and vegetables, poultry, cooking oil and low fat cheese, milk and meat than beer buyers. So you really have to know your customers in order to pinpoint the right spot for your new wine rack.

Secondly, when planning a space for your in-shop wine storage rack, do not question yourself if there are wine racks that can actually fit the space you have planned for it. You will have no problems finding a wine rack that fits into the corner or even a wine rack that perfectly fits in the center of the shop. So do not limit your mind on design or color availability. Wine storage racks producers have made their job to provide just the solution you need.

Lastly, when you decide for a suitable commercial wine rack, do not let yourself get blinded by the overwhelming beauty of some wine racks out there. Some shop owners get lured by those extraordinary luxury designs, and buy them without thinking much about how this could affect the overall picture of their shop. There is one general advice to be followed. If you do not intend to sell high quality expensive wines ($30 up boutique wines) than you should stay away from any all-heart redwood or mahogany style wine racks.

Pick out the perfect commercial wine rack at wine-storage-racks.com, a popular website that offers free advice on in-store, warehouse and cellar wine storage racks and protects wine collectors from making bad wine storage related decision.

I love French wine and food so much that I am doing a series on the typical and special wines and foods of France's eleven wine regions. This article explores the Alsace region of northeastern France and reviews a white Pinot Blanc wine. Was it a bargain? I'll make specific recommendations, and won't be silent if I'm unhappy with a wine.

If you are looking for fine French wine and food, consider the Alsace region of northeastern France. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a local white Pinot Blanc wine.

When it comes to the total acreage devoted to French vineyards, Alsace ranks tenth out of the eleven winemaking regions. Don’t be fooled by the numbers; Alsace is a major producer of quality French wine. Its wine growing area is only about 60 miles (100 kilometers) long, and at the most a mere 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) wide nestled between the Vosges Mountains to the east and the Rhine River and Germany to the west. But this relatively tiny area is known for distinctive wines. Their wine bottles are also distinctive; tall and thin with labels that feature the grape variety, not the usual practice in France. Chaptalization (adding sugar to the fermenting grape mixture) is allowed for many wine categories.

About 95% of Alsace wine is white. The major white grape varieties are Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris, and Riesling. Secondary white grape varieties include Pinot Blanc, reviewed below, Sylvaner, and Muscat. The major red grape variety is Pinot Noir, reviewed in a companion article in this series.

Colmar is an Alsatian town pretty well in the middle of the Alsatian wine villages. Go there if you don’t like rain; given its proximity to the Vosges Mountains, Colmar is the driest town in all of France. This city of about sixty-five thousand was founded in the Ninth Century. In spite of the fact that Colmar was largely destroyed in both World Wars, its old town (Vieille Ville) remains worthy of a visit. Some say that it’s more interesting than Strasbourg. You really should visit both and decide for yourself. Among Colmar’s sights are the St-Martin church constructed from the Thirteenth to the Sixteenth Centuries, the Ancienne Douane (Old Customs House), and the Maison aux Arcades (Arcades House).

Ribeauvillé is the home of Trimbach wines and has been since 1626. In spite of its size, under five thousand, it has a bit of everything: ancient town walls, picturesque medieval houses, Gothic churches, a town hall with antiques, and a spring. Nearby are the ruins of three castles. And the first Sunday in September, Ribeauvillé hosts a major Minstrel Show.

Before reviewing the Alsatian wine and imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.
Start with Foie Gras (Goose or Duck Liver).
For your second course savor Baeckeoffe (Meat and Potato Casserole).
And as dessert indulge yourself with Gâteau Chasseur (Almond Cake with Raspberries and Meringue).

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed

Trimbach Pinot Blanc 2004 12.5% alcohol about $13.50

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials.

Tasting Note Straw colour; apple, pear fruit aromas with light biscuit and citrus tones; medium- to full-bodied with ripe peachy flavours and a clean, zesty finish.

Serving Suggestion Smoked salmon, shellfish or asparagus in hollandaise sauce. Alsatian Pinot Gris is becoming increasingly fashionable, and this example illustrates why. Honeyed fruit aromas, such as peach and pear, plus a texture of smoke and mineral seduce in this just off-dry white that’s, round, soft and quite rich. The producer recommends this as a good substitute for red wine with meat dishes such as cold cuts, roast beef or game. They also suggest pairing it with smoked chicken, fish or lobster. And now for the review.

My first meal consisted of a commercially prepared chicken breast with the skin on (more calories, more flavor), potato salad, and a spicy salad based on tomatoes, red pepper and garlic. The wine was refreshingly acidic and somewhat fruity. I finished with fresh pineapple. This combination was quite good; the pineapple’s fruit flavors and the wine’s fruit flavors melded well, and seemed to intensify each other.

I then paired the Pinot Blanc with a reheated home-cooked chicken leg in a tomato-based sauce with beets and more of the above potato salad. The wine scored as in the first round, but was more assertively fruity including the taste of pears. I am not used to a Pinot Blanc wine being so present, and I like this change.

My last meal consisted of a cheeseless broccoli, mushroom, and zucchini quiche and mashed potatoes. The wine was powerful and quite fruity, but short.

The first cheese was a French goat’s milk cheese that really seemed more like a Camembert. At the first sips the cheese sort of cut off the wine. Later the results were somewhat better; the wine was fruity and moderately acidic. Then I went for a Swiss Gruyere with a lightly sharp, nutty flavor. This combination was even better; the Pinot Blanc came out nice and fruity.

I usually don’t go with a non-imported cheese when tasting wines. However, I am making an exception for a Canadian Asiago cheese that our local supermarket almost never carries. This cheese is perhaps the best that I have tasted in a long time; in my opinion it clearly surpasses its Italian Asiago cousin. When a cheese is that good, I am quite anxious to try it with wine. The result wasn’t disappointing; this gem intensified the wine’s fruit and acidity.

Final verdict. There is no doubt in my mind, this wine is a winner. And its price is quite reasonable.

I love German wine and food so much that I am doing a series on the typical and special wines and foods of Germany's thirteen wine regions. This article records the results of tasting a red Dornfelder wine from the central western region of the Mosel River Valley both on its own and with food. Was it a bargain?

If you are looking for fine German wine and food, consider the Mosel region of central western Germany on the border of Luxembourg. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a local red Dornfelder.

The Mosel Valley is considered one of the most beautiful river valleys in the world. This region, once called Mosel-Saar-Ruwer for its three rivers, is known for its Riesling. Some of the greatest Rieslings in Germany and in fact in the entire world come from Mosel. Experts can often identify Mosel Rieslings because of the slate in the local soil, which may impart a taste of flint. The slopes are among the steepest in the wine-producing world, sometimes attaining 70 degrees. The soil is so precious that every spring local workers lug pails of soil up these slopes, reversing the effect of the rains that wash the soil down every winter.

Mosel ranks fifth in Germany for both vineyard acreage and total wine production. Slightly more than three quarters of the wine produced here is QbA and somewhat less than one quarter is higher quality QmP wine. Only one percent is table wine. More than half of Mosel wine is Riesling. The German hybrid Müller-Thurgau represents about 20% of the wine production. In third place is the historic variety Elbing that dates back to Roman times and is the major grape variety in the neighboring country of Luxembourg. Only about 2% of Mosel wine is red, so perhaps we were lucky to find a Dornfelder, reviewed below. Dornfelder is a German variety also grown in the United States and in Burma. It is a cross between two crosses, and was created in 1955. One of Dornfelder’s four “grandparents” is Pinot Noir.

Basically the Mosel Valley runs from Koblenz not far from Germany’s former capital Bonn to the city of Trier that sits very close to the border. These two cities are linked by the Mosel Weinstrasse (Mosel Wine Road) which is about 140 miles (224 kilometers) long on the eastern side of the river and somewhat less on the western side. Of course, you could take the autobahn to get between Koblenz and Trier at breakneck speed. If you do, you’ll miss the interesting little towns and vineyards along the way.

The Trier Valley was first settled about 2400 years ago. The city of Trier itself was founded in 16 BC. Within three hundred years it was destroyed and rebuilt as a Roma secunda (second Rome). A unique aspect of this wine-exporting city are its underground cellars said to have a storage capacity of almost 8 million gallons. Among the sights to see are in Trier the Porta Nigra (Black Gate) dating back to Roman times, the Dom which is the oldest Christian church north of the Alps, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum (Rhenish State Museum) with the largest collection of Ancient Roman artifacts in Germany, an Amphitheater that holds real gladiator games, minus the lions, every summer, other Roman ruins, and the house in which Karl Marx was born.

Before reviewing the Mosel wine and imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.
Start with Foie Gras in Ahorn Jus (Foie Gras with Maple Flavored Juices).
For your second course enjoy Mosel Trout.
As a dessert indulge yourself with Feigenmus (Fig Puree).

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed

Wehlener Nonnerberg Dornfelder Trocken 2005 13.0% alcohol about $15.50

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. Delightful Dornfelder. Ripe and fruity, this deep-coloured Dornfelder really benefited from the heat of the 2003 vintage. This dry, medium-bodied, well-balanced red is food friendly matching a variety of dishes including pork roast or baked chicken.

My first pairing was with a grilled rib steak that had been marinated, perhaps for too long. The meat was accompanied by potatoes that were roasted in chicken fat and spicy Moroccan carrots. Let’s not mince words; this wine was lousy. It was a sort of alcoholic grape juice, admittedly with a pleasant acidity.

The next meal included spicy meat balls, rice, and once again Moroccan carrots. The wine was somewhat rounder, but still wasn’t good. For some reason I thought of Concord grape wine, although the Dornfelder wasn’t all that sweet.

The final meal consisted of beef stew with roasted potatoes and rice. The wine was moderately better but still tasted grapey. And it was still basically unacceptable.

The initial cheese pairing was with a goat’s milk cheese from the Poitou Charentes region of central-western France. This cheese looked and tasted like a somewhat runny Camembert. The cheese tamed the wine’s grapiness. The Swiss Gruyere did so even more. Every single tasting was “better” than the previous one. And yet the final tasting still didn’t reach the good level.

Final verdict. Even at half its price I would not buy this wine again. Dornfelder is grown in several other areas of Germany. But I don’t see why I should open my wallet to give this grape another chance; there are too many fine German and other wines out there.

Wine glasses, or stemware as they are known in the industry, are the natural extensions of wine. While wine can be enjoyed in any shape or size of container from a coffee mug to a crystal wine glass, the top stemware manufacturers insist that there is a science to capturing the best color, bouquet and taste of wine.

Before getting into the actual styles of glassware there are two important points to remember when choosing the right glass:

1) It is better to choose a plain, clear glass; this will allow you to analyze and appreciate the wines color, intensity, and clarity giving you clues about the wines age and quality.

2) The size of the glass should be large enough that a serving only fills the bottom half of the glass. This will allow you to “nose” through the layers of the wine and will give you enough space for an adequate swirl without spilling your wine.

Stemware is available in a variety of styles and fashions, but most wine drinkers will choose a generic tulip shaped glass that suits all varieties of wine and this is okay. However, stemware is designed to support the greatest palates, and the different shapes and styles force your head position to change directing the wine to different parts of your mouth.

Red Wine

Generally red wine is served in taller and wider glasses allowing for the complexity of these wines. There are two general types of glasses used for red wines:

Bordeaux Glasses

tall glasses with wide bowls that allow the wine to breath

designed for rich full body reds like cabernet and merlot

direct the wine to the back of the mouth for maximum flavor

Burgundy Glasses

a larger bowl than the Bordeaux glass

great for wines like burgundy and pinot noir

directs the wine to the tip of the tongue to bring out the sweetness in the wine

White Wine
White wine glasses are generally smaller than red wine glasses in order to keep the wine cold. The main type of white wine glasses is:

Chardonnay Glasses

are usually tall with a subtle bowl to keep the wine cold

used for most white wines

directs wine to the rear and sides of the mouth bringing out the wines bolder flavors

Champagne Glasses

designed tall and thin to prolong the vivacity of the bubbles

the narrow opening magnifies the scent which is predominately on the surface of the liquid

There are many other specialty styles and shapes to choose from and lots of designs for other liqueurs and spirits. The styles listed above will give you a great starting point for your wine collection and make you look like a wine aficionado.

Aside from increasing your collection stemware makes a great gift for friends and family and is always a nice treat to bring the hostess of a dinner party in appreciation for all of their work!

Moms, do you ever get a day or even a couple of hours off? No wonder you feel tired and overwhelmed sometimes. If you work for a business you probably get two days off that work but you still have the house and family to care for. How can you give yourself a break?

Here are two ideas that might work for you:

1. Take a mental holiday or

2. Treat yourself as a Queen Day

Sound silly? Not really, these are two legitimate ways to get some rest, relaxation and refreshment during your busy days.

1. Take a mental holiday. What is the most relaxing, refreshing place in the world for you? For me it is the beach. When I take a mental holiday I imagine I am at the beach. I try to imagine everything – the feel of the hot sand under my feet, the warm rays of the sun, the soft air caressing my skin, the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, the sound of the seagulls screaming for attention, the smell of the salt air, the joyful sound of kids and families having fun, the smells of a picnic lunch… I really get into it. Then I begin to relax knowing I am in my safe and peaceful place. I can stay there as long as I want – a few minutes to hours – re-experiencing what it is like and how refreshing it is. When I need to come back to reality I do so slowly, bringing with me the relaxation and serenity I feel when I am really at the beach. Try it – it is amazing what a little imaging can do for you!

2. Treat yourself as Queen for a Day, or hour, or as long as you can. Think about how you treat your guests. Do you treat yourself that way? Probably not. Take the time to do some of the little things you do for guests for yourself. Use the good coffee cups, take a long hot bath, put on make-up and perfume even though you are not going anywhere but the grocery store. Treat yourself like a Queen. Do Queen-like things with the kids too. Have a tea party with tea and scones (or something else yummy). Let them play along with you. They will enjoy it and you might even get them to wait on you for a change!

Use your imagination to let yourself have a bit of a respite. It is not only great for you but it also shows your family that you model taking good care of yourself. That is an important lesson for everyone to learn.

Potty training is a big step in your child’s life. They are growing up and becoming independent little people. It can also be a very frustrating, exhausting time for parents. Here are a few tips to make it a better and more enjoyable process.

What not to do:

· Do not rush things: if you rush your child this can cause negative results. If you push s child that isn’t ready it can cause them to regress, and they may loose whatever potty training sills the have gained. Child can become resistant to going to potty. Allow child to take potty training at their own pace.

· Don’t over-complicate things: adjust your language to make it easier for the child to understand and use simple words to describe body parts. Above all be consistent with these words to avoid confusion.

· Don’t worry about others: all children progress at different stages during potty training and try to take others advice and use what is useful and forget the rest. Everyone has an opinion on this issue.

· Don’t punish your child: potty training is filled with accidents and a mistake it is through these mistakes the child learns how to be successful. It can be frustrating and upsetting when children forget to use the potty but never punish them for the mistakes by offering negative reinforcement the child could become afraid of training. This could make the process even more difficult and frustrating.

What to do when potty training:

· Check for readiness: not all children are ready at the same time on average they will show interest around 18-24 months and many will not be fully trained until age 4. Signs of readiness are interest in the toilet, regular bowel movements and can follow simple instructions.

· Plan ahead of time: be sure to discuss how to deal with accidents and setbacks. Think of ways to motivate your child. You may want to talk to your pediatrician.

· Coordinate with caregivers: it is important that your child receives consistent instructions when using potty tell nanny, preschool, and grandparents and so on.

· Offer praise: very important to praise child whenever possible during training. Celebrate everything your child does. If they wash their hands, if they tell you that they have to go to potty, and if they make potty. Praise is positive reinforcement and will make the child want to use the potty.

· Offer motivation: children loose interest quickly use motivation to keep the child interested in the potty training. Buy a doll so child can “potty train” the doll. Have books on hand and stickers and stamps for all stages of learning.

Good motivators are:

· For boys put fruit loops in the toilet and have them aim and try to sink them.

· Decorate the little potty with paints and stickers to make it their own.

· Put up a sticker board to track their progress (also good for you to see)

· M&M for when they go!!

Most of all keep a positive outlook they will get trained it just takes time to click with some kids and it could happen overnight! There are tricks and tips to shorten the training time for this information go to the site that saved my sanity www.nightmareofpottytraining.info

Wine is one of the oldest drinks associated traditionally with many festivals and celebrations. Today, it has become a common household item and is found everywhere from bars to kitchens. Many people have gone on wine tasting tours not out of any professional obligations but out of sheer love for this particular drink. Wine tasting tours are organized so that wine tasters may have the chance to evaluate the quality of different wines based on criteria like feeling, aroma, and color. People who go on wine tasting tours have a well-developed sense of smell and taste and they can tell even minor details about a wine through simple smelling and tasting.

Besides determining the taste of the wine, wine tasting tours also offer the opportunity for determining the proper placement of the wine based on other ingredients like alcohol content, tannin, acidity, and the collective balance between such elements. Wine tasting involves the use of equipment like aroma bottles and blotting strips that are the stock in trade of everyone who goes on wine tasting tours.

Wine tasting tours are a kind of minor festival unto themselves among wine lovers. While there are many wine tasting events that are taking place all over the world, the best thing for wine tasters are the events combined with their vacations. Wine tasting tours are conducted for people who wish to vacation in spots close to wineries and enjoy a vacation while indulging in their favorite form of recreation and relaxation. These tours have become well established and include some of the most famous wineries and vineyards. Some wine tasting tours are organized around specific wine tasting festivals that take place in specific parts of the world and within certain hotels and restaurants.

The good news is that many of the leading wineries in the world have tied up with tour organizers to offer wine tasting tours for wine lovers. The best way to find out about wine tasting tours is to search on the Internet or to ask your own travel agent for information about these tours. Remember that wine tasting tours are not like regular tours and the packages, transportation, accommodation, duration, and destinations are all a little removed from regular tourist destinations. There are several travel agents that offer many exciting wine tasting tours that cover wineries in places like Mexico, Italy, Spain, France, and even California. There are so many wineries in the world that your choice is practically as unlimited as regular tourist destinations. In some cases it is even possible to customize your own wine tasting tours by selecting wineries, accommodation, and tour duration. In case you are visiting wine festivals then you could choose which events you would like to attend.

Like most everything else, the Internet has made the location and booking of wine tasting tours easier than it ever was. Not only can you find the tours that suit you best but through online communities you can even exchange comments with people who have been on those tours before and pick up tips that could save you time and money and also prevent you from committing some common mistakes.

Things to look for in wine bar

Wine drinking is one of the best ways to enjoy oneself or to have a chat with friends. If you want to enjoy wine outside, there are outside wine bars that will surely suit you. However, as a customer you should know that there are some things to consider before going into a wine bar. Aside from enjoying a good bottle of wine, here are some other things that you should consider in a wine bar.

Check the wine list

This is the first thing that you should check. The best wine bar does not only offer the different varieties of wine, you should make sure that they have the best kinds. Be sure to check the prices too because some places are pricy when they sell good wine.

Check the wine quality

Even if the place has the best brands and best types of wine, make sure its quality is supreme. Some wines get dull if it’s stored too long so be sure that you get the best bottle that they have. Some wines also crystallize so make sure that your wine bar knows all about these aspects. Certain types of wine also require ‘breathing’ to get their best taste.

Check the menu

A good wine bar must always have a menu that compliments their wine list. If not, that means you won’t be able to enjoy yourself fully. There are specific types of wines that are best partnered with different meals. So make sure that the bar’s menu gives you some of the best partners for your favorite wines.

Check the ambiance

Most people become regular customers because of a bar’s ambiance. Always evaluate the ambiance of the bar before deciding to come back. It’s better if there is good music that you can enjoy while chatting, and it’s important if you can also identify with the crowd.

Check the service

Make sure that service is excellent. Enjoying your bottle of wine will be best if you are entertained by good waiters. Most bars usually have a wine expert so make sure to have a little chat with them when you order your glass or bottle to learn something new. Be kind enough to leave a tip if you enjoy their service, you can be sure that they will serve you better when you return.

Whether you are drinking for your own enjoyment or with friends, remember this checklist. Enjoying a good wine will be so much better in a bar if you take note of these tips.

Everyone knows that a slow cooker is a great way to make hearty stews. However, there are many more slow cooker recipes that you may not be aware of.

For example, a slow-cooked chicken curry is a deliciously spicy treat. All you have to do is add the meat, vegetables, spices and sauce to the cooker before you go to work, and you can come home to a wonderful curry. All you will need to do on your return is cook some rice or heat some naan breads to serve with it. What is particularly good is that curries are amazingly versatile. For this dish, for example, you can swap the chicken with other types of meat, fish, or extra vegetables for a vegetarian alternative.

Desserts can also be prepared using the slow cooker. One option is to slow cook chunks of fresh pineapple for 4 hours, along with ginger, cinnamon and brown sugar. This method makes the pineapple wonderfully soft, and will melt in the mouth when served with exotic coconut ice cream.

Of course, most people use their slow cooker primarily to make soups or stews. After all, it is a great way to use up any spare vegetables, along with tougher cuts of meat that need a long time to cook. Adding the stock, meat, vegetables and herbs to the slow cooker before you go to work means you won’t need to think about cooking after a hard day in the office. Instead, you will be able to open your door to delicious cooking smells, and the prospect of a freshly prepared meal with minimum effort. And that really is a great way to relax.

There are numerous recipes that can be adapted for larger numbers of guests, taking all the stress out of hosting a dinner party. This means you can concentrate on what is important – spending time with your guests and ensuring they are enjoying themselves.

A classic chili is simple to prepare and very popular – the perfect dish to satisfy hungry guests. Just remember to wash your hands after chopping chili peppers.

So, with many soup, main course and dessert slow cook recipes available, this really is one of the most versatile appliances in the kitchen.

Now you’re in the know, you’ll be able to use your slow cooker to its full potential, instead of simply concentrating on making stews with it.

Find cheap bread machine recipes and get the most from this handy and versatile kitchen accessory. The slow cooker offers a lot more than simple soup and stew dishes.

A Guide To Wooden Wine Racks

Wooden wine racks have stood the test of time when it comes to wine racks, and for good reasons. Discover how to choose a quality wood wine rack.

Although wine racks come in many shapes and styles, wooden wine racks remain the classiest choice. The pale earthy tones of the wood complement the soothing green and blue shades found on many wine bottles. Wine connoisseurs should not settle for trendy racks. They should enhance their wine collection by choosing traditional, timeless wooden wine racks.

Pine, oak, and maple are woods commonly used to build wood wine racks. Natural pine boards have a tendency to range in color from pale straw shades to dark honey. Pine is very inexpensive and relatively sturdy, so it is an extremely popular and affordable choice. Oak is more expensive because oak takes a long time to grow. Oak is extremely durable, long lasting and can range in color from a pale honey to a medium red. Maple is another sturdy hardwood. Maple can range in color, typically golden with darker red grain patterns. Maple falls in between oak and pine in cost. It is suggested that harder woods be used in wine cellars due to their strength and resistance to warping.

When purchasing wooden wine racks, it is essential to purchase a system that keeps the bottle level. If a cork is allowed to dry out, the wine spoils. Any wine enthusiast should ensure that the cork remains moist. To keep a bottle of wine in perfect condition, it should be stored in such a manner that the cork remains in contact with the wine. Wine is best stored in a cool, dark cellar. Median temperatures for proper wine storage range from 50ºF to 59ºF. Many basements are perfect for storing wine, as heat and light can spoil a wine in a very short time span.

Wood Modular Wine Racks

Wooden wine racks racks do not hold heat. As the wine bottles sit on the wood wine racks, no heat is transferred from the wood to the bottle. Metal racks can conduct heat. If wine is stored upstairs, heat from the sun can heat a metal wine rack and damage the contents of a bottle of wine that will not be opened for some time. Therefore, it is best to rely on wood wine racks when storing any bottle of wine.

Serious wine collectors should invest in wood modular wine racks. Modular racks are designed for floor to ceiling usage. Wood modular wine racks typically come in six sizes ranging from thirty-six bottle capacity to one hundred and twenty bottle capacity. Modular racks can be fitted side by side to fill an entire room. Lining basement walls with modular racks creates outstanding wine storage conditions.

With a wide array of wooden wine racks available, purchasing a storage system is simple. Prices range greatly, so there is certain to be a wooden wine rack that is affordable to the wine drinker in any home.

When you have kids, after a few years it seems like you start to get a collection of stuffed animals. There are so many cute and loveable stuffed animals out there. They are a great gift for almost anyone or any occasion. One time when visiting relatives, they gave my first-born baby a little stuffed clown. It was cute but nothing out of the ordinary. She latched onto that little clown and was not happy when it was out of her site. She loved that thing. Her grandmother one time was at the grocery store with her. She was about 8 months old, sitting in a shopping cart. She would watch the shoppers coming in the door. As they came in she would determine which customers looked nice and then she would throw the clown on the floor. The nice shopper would pick up the clown and tell her how cute she was and she would give them a dazzling smile back in return. What a kid!! Occasionally I had to sneak the clown away to wash it. Being rather old when it was given to her, it was not long before it started to come apart at the seams. I was always sewing it together. We finally had to say “good bye” to the clown who took a trip to the dumpster.

Stuffed Tiger

It always seemed like we had way more stuffed animals then we had room for. One year our #7 son, who was then about 8 years old at the time, asked for a stuffed animal for Christmas. He said that he had never gotten one for his own. What?? How could that have happened? We had so many around the house. But, he told me; he did not have one that was his. I told myself that he was too old for a stuffed animal and that he would probably rather have something more “fun”. He let me know that his hearts true desire was a stuffed animal. So, for Christmas we got him a stuffed animal. I thought that he was too old for a cute bear so I got him a stuffed tiger. He loved it. He slept with it every night. The tiger was his friend; someone that he could hug whenever he wanted too and the tiger would comfort him back. He still has that tiger today

Unique wine racks, such as diamond wine racks, are growing in popularity as people try to give their wine collection an artistic expresssion.

Serious wine collectors prefer diamond wine racks for storing their treasured bottles of wine. Whether a wine lover’s tastes run to a rich, savory burgundy or a light, citrus toned Pinot Grigio, they all know the trick to any wine cellar is having ample space. Diamond wine racks provide ample storing capacity and proper horizontal storage conditions. Purchasing this style of rack is affordable and smart. You can easily turn your basement into a wine cellar in little time. Or display them right in plain view for guests to appreciate and marvel at.

Many bottles of wine must age from a few weeks to a number of years. Aging wine requires a cool area, moisture to keep corks from drying out, and no light. If these conditions are not met, the wine can develop sour, vinegary flavors. Not fun! If you line a basement wall with two or three unique wine racks, the possibilities for wine storage become unlimited. As air temperatures below ground remain constant and humidity is often in the air, a basement creates a perfect area for wine storage.

Unique wine racks are handcrafted from exquisite pieces of wood — and some of the most unique ones are made out of metal shapes, such as stylish spirals. These are made out of wrought iron or steel usually, which can be shaped into beautiful artistic designs.

When it comes to the wooden racks, redwood, pine, maple, and oak are utilized when creating wine racks of high quality. The outer frame of the wine rack forms a tall rectangle. This rectangle holds a criss-cross pattern of braces that form a diamond pattern on the inside of the rack’s frame. Each diamond section is capable of holding up to sixteen 750ml bottles of wine, twelve bottles of champagne, or nine magnums (1 ½ liters). With twenty-four sections typically included in one large rack, diamond wine racks can hold more than 200 bottles of wine per unit.

Diamond wine racks range in height, but are usually sixty to seventy-two inches high. The average wine rack stands floor to ceiling. The racks tend to average thirteen inches deep, easily fitting an average bottle of wine. Diamond wine racks can range in width to suit your needs. You may expect any rack you choose to hold far more wine than you will need to store for your personal use.

For the serious collector, diamond wine racks can hold enough wine bottles to last a number of years. Your new abilities as a wine connoisseur are likely to cause some jealous comments from close friends. It is human nature to feel a slight touch of pride in becoming the envy of others! Use diamond wine racks or other unique designs and show off your collection today.

Taking care of the kids, being in charge of the house, and earning money at the same time can sure keep our schedules busy. We wake up at 7AM and go to bed at 9PM, and the hours in between those are spent doing things for the people we love the most.

However, just because we are too busy juggling our time between family and making ends meet does not mean we have to neglect ourselves. In fact, it is all the more important to care for ourselves in order for us to be happier and more productive. Here are some ways moms can look pretty even with a very tight schedule.

1. Get enough sleep.

Many moms out there lose sleep because they have to do so many things in one day. Do not force yourself to finish everything. Simply list down all the important tasks that need to be done for the day and whatever you can put off until tomorrow should be rescheduled. Listing too many items in your to-do list will only frustrate you especially when you realize there is no way to complete them today.

2. Pamper yourself.

No, we do not mean you shop until you drop because surely, moms like you hate spending much for themselves. But instead, we are talking about buying that lovely dress you have been eying for the past two weeks, or going to a salon to get a haircut. Buy something for yourself every once in awhile. You spend all your money on your kids that you forget there is this one person who deserves nice new things too- YOU!

3. Take time to exercise.

If you can hit the gym a few times a week then that would be wonderful. However, busy moms like you probably do not have time for the gym. This should not deter you from getting or maintaining a sexy body. Again, do not forget that moms should be pretty, too so it is a must for you to engage in activities that will keep you fit. You can take 30 minutes daily to jog around the neighborhood. Or you can also enroll in a dance class or join sports clubs playing badminton, tennis, bowling, and the like. Not only will these activities keep your body fit, they are also great stress-busters.

4. Dress up

The last tip for the day is to dress up. Yes, you heard it right. Just because you are already a mom does not mean you should stop making yourself look pretty. Au contraire, it is all the more reason for you to dress up, put on some make up, spray a whiff of your favorite scent, and do your hair. Take time to decide on what to wear tomorrow, or for the week even. Dressing sloppily just won’t do else you would age faster!

Being a mom is a great reason to celebrate every single day, which means that you should give yourself reason to look good and feel good all the time.

Often, when considering cooking dinner with a Crockpot, people may automatically think of soups, stews, a pot roast or chicken pieces. However, with a little creativity and a spice rack some delicious, impressive foods can be the result.

Slightly altering recipes from a variety of cookbooks and sources, Crockpot cooking need not be mundane. If you are leaning towards a recipe that calls for slow roasting in the oven, use the Crockpot instead!

One of the main reasons for not using the Crockpot with more creative recipes might be the fear of the unknown for some cooks. Trying something new with an long-standing, tried and true appliance can be a worrisome prospect to some and for good reason. However, trying and failing is better than not trying at all! If one recipe doesn’t work for you, try the next one, and the next, until you find a grouping of recipes that will work. Always remember to write down the ones that do work, so you’ll have the recipes at the ready the next time you wish to try “something new”.

The beauty of the Crockpot, when it comes to cooking, is it allows whatever ingredients you are using to marinate in their flavorful juices. If your primary ingredient is a pork roast, a slow cooker helps to create a tender, tasty piece of meat. In altering recipes from cookbooks, always remember, the lid stays on during the cooking stage, therefore any recipe that requires liquids will use less, due to lack of evaporation.

Some suggestions for the Crockpot might be lasagna, linguine with clam sauce, your choice of white or red, macaroni and cheese, fish with stuffing, Swedish meatballs with gravy, adding a layer of egg noodles for good measure, or meatloaf, a staple in most households.

As most gourmet recipes call for wine, flavored vinegars, olive oil or some combination of the three, some of the liquid is provided but when in doubt add a can of flavored stewed tomatoes, liquid and all, to provide some zest to your dinner table. In addition, if you find yourself at a loss for a liquid, you can always add a cup or two of beef or chicken bouillon or broth to add some flavor to whatever it is you’re cooking.

Crock-pots can be used to create a tremendous variety of Hors d’oeuvre, entrees, side dishes and desserts. With the array of sizes in which crock-pots are available, the possibilities are unlimited. Given the versatility of cooking with a Crockpot, you do not have to feel trapped with the same old, tired recipes.

Overcoming your fears and trying something new in your crock-pot will be an advantageous and delicious way to feed your family while not spending all your time in the kitchen, both before and after dinner. Try some new recipes in the crock-pot when company comes and give yourself more time to enjoy your company, which is really what entertaining is all about, isn’t it?

Gourmet cooking in your crock-pot is obtainable and oh so delectable! Your family will love you for it and guests will marvel at how much time they might think you have spent preparing a delicious, “time-consuming” meal making them feel even more special!

By now Mother's Day is just a faded memory, and summer is around the corner which means, the kids will be home--all day. What can Moms do for themselves to feel energized and on top of their game? These tips for self-renewal go beyond the traditional girls night out routine to help Moms discover their inner landscape one quiet moment at a time.

Self care may be the first thing to go in late spring as these days are often frantic times for Moms. The need to plan summer looms. What camps and classes will work within a complex family schedule? Who will be with the kids when? What will our family trip look like?

As you make plans for your children and family this summer, I invite you to plan carefully for your self care as well. Try a few of the ideas below and then notice the difference in your energy level, your creativity, and your ability to keep present and available to your children. And don’t be bashful or feel guilty about taking care of yourself. By doing so you are modeling for your kids a healthy lifestyle. Think about that. Every time you nurture yourself and be good to yourself, your child sees it. He or she grows into a self-actualized adult who knows how to stay healthy and kind to self. What a tremendous gift we Moms give by taking care of ourselves…OK, so now do you feel more ready to try a few of these?

1.	Use Early Morning Energy

With the sun up earlier, you may get more of an energy boost by giving yourself an extra half hour in the morning to write in a journal, meander through a few lists, or contemplate a current challenge. Whatever you do, this is your time for uninterrupted reflection.

2.	Slow Stretching

You may want to extend the half-hour in the morning to a full hour so you can have time for stretching and getting your body geared up. Or perhaps fifteen minutes of stretching before bedtime will help you relax and sleep sounder. In the middle of the day, stretching can act like a ritual ending of one activity and preparation for another. When we stretch, we relieve tension, breathe deeply, get in touch with our bodies in a slow, sweet way, and luxuriously revitalize our energy. Lots of benefits for the time spent!

3.	Delegate Something.

Many Moms find delegating difficult. I often recommend to the mothers I coach, this daily practice:

Think throughout the day: What can I give away to somebody else? Think on this question morning, noon, and night. You may be surprised to find answers you didn’t think possible! Perhaps my husband can take back those overdue library books so I won’t have to run any errands today? Or my twelve year-old can read to her younger sister so I can leisurely get ready for guests? Or I can ask for help stuffing these PTA envelopes and the entire family can chip in and I’ll get done sooner?

You must be rigorous with yourself to ask the question often throughout the day. But if you do that, you will observe yourself getting better and better with not only delegating, but now thinking often to yourself: Yes, I do deserve help, I can get it, and I do!

4.	Complete Something.

I spent six months with this message prominently displayed in my office. It helped me do tasks that I had been putting off, or gave me the needed encouragement to finish one small thing and to feel elated when I did. Often when we are very busy, we juggle a lot of balls and stress ourselves needlessly in the process. Planning for your summer self-care may include deciding to complete one small thing each day and then to chunk some time for yourself to finish a larger project. Is there a craft you started, but haven’t given yourself time yet to complete? Make this summer one in which you do something for your Creative Self as well as for encouraging creativity in your children!

5.	Date Yourself.

A solitary lunch, time alone to browse a bookstore, or whatever re-charges our batteries. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time. Over the summer, you could have at least twelve self-dates. You’ll enjoy your own company so much you will come back refreshed and ready to seek out the company of your family.
