The 1970s were thick with New Age spiritual fads and movements, from the benign (crystals) to the unspeakably toxic and cultic (Jonestown). Somewhere in the middle of that woo-woo spectrum lies the work of Carlos Castaneda. A UCLA anthropology grad student turned self-appointed guru, Castaneda became a counterculture icon with the publication of his first book, “The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge,” in 1968, purporting to find enlightenment via psychedelic mushrooms, peyote and the cryptic musings of Don Juan, an Indigenous spirit guide.

That book, and the stream of his that followed, seduced millions of readers, plenty of them no doubt hoping that with the proper dosage they, like Castaneda, might also transform into a crow and soar across the purple skies of the dusty Southwest. That Castaneda’s books were largely flimflam isn’t in dispute. But Ru Marshall’s hefty biography, “American Trickster,” reveals the depth of his deception — and, just as potently, how easily people can be taken in by it.

“He didn’t lie out of convenience or opportunism,” Marshall writes. “He lied because he loved to. Lying was, for him, an art, and he did it exceptionally well.” This is a 1970s story, but anybody in the present can relate.

Born in Peru (not Brazil, as he often claimed) in 1925 (not a decade later, as he often claimed), Castaneda demonstrated no particular intellectual promise. But in the mid-1950s, first at L.A. City College and later at UCLA, he developed an affection for writing, philosophy and history. While pursuing a graduate degree in anthropology in the ’60s, he grew enchanted with Buddhism, Theosophy, existentialism and Native American spirituality — all key elements of the spiritualist goulash he would eventually cook up for his books. His timing was impeccable: From Timothy Leary’s LSD experiments to transcendental meditation, non-Christian religion and drugs fueled the zeitgeist. And Castaneda’s manuscript of “The Teachings” spoke effervescently about both.

It hardly seemed to matter that the book also demonstrated his ignorance of both: He had little understanding of psychoactive drugs (you don’t smoke shrooms, dude), and there was nothing meaningfully Yaqui about Don Juan. Still, the book — and their follow-ups “A Separate Reality” and “Journey to Ixtlan” — were massive bestsellers. Castaneda made it to the cover of Time magazine. His work provided George Lucas with more than a little inspiration for his master-and-student space opera, “Star Wars.” And he became a target for parodists, the surest sign of fame. Donald Barthelme satirized him in his story “The Teachings of Don B.: A Yankee Way of Knowledge.”

That the ’70s American psyche, brutalized by Watergate and Vietnam, found solace in Castaneda’s sophistry isn’t surprising. More shocking is that the academic establishment tolerated it too: UCLA awarded him a PhD in anthropology with “Ixtlan” serving as his dissertation. Castaneda, Marshall writes, made an end run around the department’s Yaqui expert, with the other committee members overly impressed by his au courant melange of fieldwork and gauzy ruminations, despite the fact that his timelines and grasp of mycology didn’t make sense. “If we stop telling ourselves that the world is so-and-so, the world will stop being so-and-so,” Don Juan mused. Perversely, Castaneda’s success proved him right.

“American Trickster,” at more than 600 pages, is at once more information about Castaneda than any reader needs, and not nearly enough. Marshall (who in 2006 published a novel, “A Separate Reality,” inspired by Castaneda), has gone to ground on every element of his subject’s life, from his upbringing in Peru to his celebrity (he’d find his way into the orbits of former Gov. Jerry Brown, Federico Fellini and Oliver Stone at various points), to the years before his death of liver cancer in 1998. By that point he’d focused his attention on Tensegrity, a modified martial arts practice demonstrated at pricey workshops, and gathered a host of followers, mostly women, who he played against each other and psychologically abused in various ways.

But who did this guy think he was? How did he come to invent such a strange spiritual system, and develop the nerve to sell it both to mainstream publishers and the academic establishment? Why did he keep a box of knives under his bed? “Carlos acted in the zone where the trickery of the cult leader and that of the literary hoaxer (and the anthropological hoaxer) overlap,” Marshall writes. But all the biographical detail brings us no closer to what made him such a successful triple threat of eyewash.

Perhaps a book that couched Castaneda’s story more deeply in the context of the ’70s counterculture and the nature of cults past and present would make his story clearer. But perhaps not — his tale is inevitably something to wonder at, evidence of humans’ capacity to spin a yarn that flatters our egos and urge to understand our spiritual selves, and to buy into what’s spun.

Maybe it’s unsurprising that one of the first people to publicly sound the alarm about Castaneda was a novelist. In 1972, Joyce Carol Oates wrote a letter to the New York Times Book Review questioning a credulous review of Castaneda’s books. (The New York Times had spiked a more skeptical one, Marshall reports.) “It is quite possible that Don Juan represents a ‘non-ordinary’ reality so strange to me that I cannot accept it, and must try to reason my way out of believing,” she wrote. “But I don’t think so… I’d be very interested in whether other readers share my bewilderment.” No doubt others did. But what if bewilderment was exactly what they were seeking?

Japan Supreme Court upholds disbandment decision for Unification Church

TOKYO - Japan's Supreme Court has upheld a lower court order urging the controversial religious group Unification Church to disband, calling it "necessary and inevitable" after its aggressive donation-soliciting tactics plagued followers for decades.

The church came under greater scrutiny for its links to ruling party politicians, especially after the killing of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe by a man who held a grudge against the group over financial hardship endured by his family.

Presiding Justice Eriko Watanabe said the necessity of the church's dissolution outweighs its potential psychological effects on followers of the group as the Third Petty Bench of the top court reached the final decision on Monday.

The court said its dissolution is warranted in the absence of effective measures to stop the practice of systematically soliciting massive donations by urging followers to meet unachievable targets.

It also brushed aside the group's claim that ordering it to disband as a religious corporation goes against the Constitution that guarantees freedom of religion, supporting the lower court's judgment.

The ruling came after the church, formally known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, appealed the dissolution order by the Tokyo High Court in March.

At the time, the high court ruled the damages suffered by victims of the church's donation practice between March 1973 and June 2016 totaled about 7.4 billion yen ($46 million).

The high court decision has already led to the start of the group's liquidation process designed to compensate victims.

It is the first case in Japan in which a religious group has been ordered to dissolve for violating the Civil Code.

Japanese courts can order religious groups to dissolve for violations of laws and regulations, and the Unification Church is the third organization to receive such an order.

The AUM Shinrikyo doomsday cult group, which carried out the deadly 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system, was also ordered to disband.

The top court pointed out in its latest decision that the church's illegitimate conduct has brought "extremely large amounts of property damage to many people" between 1973 and 2022.

The lone shooter of Abe, Tetsuya Yamagami, claimed he targeted the former premier during an election campaign speech in 2022 because Abe's grandfather had helped introduce the Unification Church to Japan, according to investigative sources.

In January this year, Yamagami was sentenced to life in prison, a decision he has appealed.

The project aims to better understand how practitioners conceptualize religious harm, assess it, select or adapt therapeutic approaches, and navigate the challenges that arise in this area of practice. If you choose to participate, you will be invited to a semi‑structured interview lasting approximately 60 to 90 minutes. The interview will take place online via Zoom at a time that suits you. You will be asked about your experiences working with clients affected by religious harm, how you approach assessment and formulation, what therapeutic strategies or adaptations you use, and what challenges you have encountered in this kind of work. With your permission, the interview will be audio‑recorded and transcribed to ensure your views are captured accurately. You may also choose to review your transcript after the interview; if you do, you will have 2 weeks to request changes or removals.

Da Free John
Da Free John is one of the many names used by the American spiritual teacher born Franklin Albert Jones (1939–2008), who founded the new religious movement eventually known as Adidam.

Jones was a charismatic and highly controversial figure in the late 20th-century alternative spirituality landscape. Over his lifetime, he changed his name frequently to reflect what he described as evolving stages of his spiritual realization.

Evolution of Names
Before and after using "Da Free John," Jones adopted several different titles, including:

Bubba Free John (1970s): "Bubba" represents a friendly, brotherly figure.

Da Free John (1970s–1980s): Shifting toward a more traditional guru persona ("Da" meaning "giver").

Tax money goes to waste – psychology researcher examines the waste of millions in new book.

In the new book “Psychobusiness,” researchers Mattias Lundberg and Magnus Lindwall attack what they describe as a multimillion-dollar industry built on simplifications, pseudoscience, and big promises. “Psychobusiness – about self-proclaimed experts, quick solutions, and expensive illusions” will be published on September 1.

Every year, Swedish municipalities, regions, authorities and companies spend millions on personality tests, motivational concepts, leadership models and other psychological products that lack scientific support. This despite repeated criticism from experts in the field. "Psychobusiness" examines methods that have long dominated working life, sports and personal development, including DISC, Myers-Briggs, NLP and the law of attraction.

– We are all just a really good lecture away from starting to believe in something questionable. What fascinates us most is how this can be allowed to continue, year after year, despite the collective body of researchers condemning both methods and costs. Here we line up both facts and names in the matter – simply because someone has to. We speak plainly, name examples and do not duck uncomfortable questions, says Mattias Lundberg.

– The problem is bigger than individuals risking being deceived. It is about organizations making decisions about, for example, recruitment and development efforts based on models that lack a scientific basis. When tax money is used for such things, it becomes a societal problem, says Magnus Lindwall.

A recurring theme in the book is how pseudoscientific products are given a scientific appearance through advanced concepts, fake certifications, proprietary training systems, and references to research that often does not exist or is misinterpreted. The authors believe this is particularly problematic in organizations where time, resources, and expertise for qualified reviews are limited.

– The most inconvenient thing here is that no one is completely outside the problem. Even organizations that should know better have purchased or used products like this. It shows how strong the attraction is of simple solutions and big promises, says Magnus Lindwall.

About the authors:

Mattias Lundberg is a licensed psychologist and associate professor of psychology, as well as the author of several professional and popular science books, primarily in the field of work and organizational psychology. As a public debater, he has been on the front line against pseudoscience in psychology for many years.

Magnus Lindwall is a professor of psychology, one of Sweden's most established researchers in motivation, physical activity and mental health and has also published several non-fiction books on these subjects. With his extensive knowledge, he is often asked as an expert in the media.

In November 2025, Colombian immigration authorities and army forces raided a hotel in Yarumal, Antioquia. Following a tip from a local shop owner, authorities found nine members of Lev Tahor, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect, with 17 minors. Originally founded in Israel during the late 1980s before moving around the globe, locals claim the members of Lev Tahor arrived in Colombia in October 2025, looking to rent a property to set up a community. The news of the arrest came as a surprise to the Colombian town, but it was not the first time Lev Tahor—or other cults from the Global North—had been uncovered overseas. In fact, a combination of low-capacity states in the Global South and ambiguity in cross-border prosecution creates the perfect conditions for cults to export their teachings, leaving members isolated and vulnerable.

What constitutes a “cult” is fiercely debated, but prominent definitions often feature a personalist leader who uses manipulation tactics to isolate members from the outside world. When a cult employs religion in its structure or rhetoric, a fine line appears between balancing freedom of religion and tackling abuses that take place within these groups, creating a legal grey area that hinders regulation.

The liberal tenet of religious freedom provides a legal sanctuary through which plausibly well-meaning cults can devolve into reigns of terror, shielded under the guise of “sincerely held” religious beliefs and thus avoiding state intervention. Look to the case of the Peoples Temple, a cult that was founded in 1955 professing Christian, communist, and socialist values with a focus on racial equality. As the movement gained traction, it also began engaging in dubious behavior, including “loyalty tests” that involved sleep deprivation and physical pain. Founder Jim Jones relied on his close relationship with former San Francisco mayor George Moscone to avoid investigation. It was not until these violations came to light in a New West magazine exposé that Jones fled to a tract of land in Guyana.

The United States is not the only country whose legal system turns a blind eye to cults. In 2014, Grace Road Church, a South Korean cult known for its ‘threshing floor’ practice, which entailed beating adherents to expel the Devil from their bodies, fled to Fiji after mainstream churches classified it as heretical. Curiously, the South Korean government—whose constitution guarantees religious freedom for all citizens—recorded no instances of scrutiny before this point.

While the circumstances prompting Peoples Temple, Grace Road Church, and Lev Tahor to flee to the Global South vary, all three groups share a trend of mounting human rights abuses upon exodus, enabled by weak or corrupt host country governments. In Guyana, Jones compelled his group to commit ‘revolutionary suicide.’ Authorities later found over 900 People's Temple members—some of whom were locals—dead from mass suicide. Prior to the massacre, the Guyanese government did not conduct any formal criminal or human rights investigations into the group, likely because Jones was politically shielded by close government partnerships.

In Fiji, Grace Road Church developed close ties with former dictator and prime minister Frank Bainimarama, establishing several businesses on the archipelago and employing over 300 Koreans and 100 locals. Bainimarama allegedly threatened the local Deuba tribe to drop complaints of land infringement. When the group’s founder was arrested in Seoul on charges of “enslaving” workers in Fiji, the Fijian government did not follow suit in pursuing a criminal investigation of its own.

Cult relocation abroad not only enables unobstructed criminal violations but also complicates legal jurisdiction. A black crucifix on the roof marks the house. Behind the walls, on a suburban street in the village of Los Molinos, shielded by thick hedges and iron gates, dozens of young women live under strict control.

The women dress like nuns, but they are not. They belong to the Daughters of Merciful Love, or Hijas de Amor Misericordioso (HAM), a Catholic religious association — not an official order of the church — that has branches across Spain, in Madrid, Seville, and Toledo, and a male equivalent.

Residents of Los Molinos, near Madrid, say they see the women around the village walking to church twice a day. “They keep to themselves,” said one neighbour. “They have fixed smiles on their faces at all times. It looks like they’re in a trance.”

In July last year, the Daughters of Merciful Love was put under investigation by the Archdiocese of Madrid after “numerous complaints”. The Archdiocese found their activities had many of the attributes of a cult and limited them as a result, including banning them from admitting new members. HAM’s leader, María Milagrosa, known as “Marimi” to members, was removed by the cardinal of Madrid. Marimi was contacted for comment.

In recent weeks, about forty alleged victims or relatives of women and men, some of whom are still part of HAM, have spoken out, sharing details of alleged abuse in interviews with the Spanish media. They allege that within HAM there were “exorcisms” and food and sleep were restricted.

The Sunday Times met four alleged victims of the group who claim that they suffered abuse including sexual, spiritual, physical, psychological and coercive control. Many live in fear of repercussions from the community and all of their names have been changed to protect their identities.

Victims and their families — many of whom have daughters still inside HAM — say the church’s recent measures do not go far enough. They claim the abuse is continuing and put the responsibility squarely on the church, which they claim has allowed abuse to go unchecked for decades.

The Archdiocese of Madrid was approached for comment.

The Brothers of Merciful Love, the group’s male chapter, is also under scrutiny by the church to determine whether or not it will be dissolved. Its 30 members wear a monk’s habit and are allegedly given the tools of self-flagellation. The Sunday Times met one former member of the Brothers who alleges he was coerced into a sexual relationship with a senior member.

‘Cult-like, without any doubt’

The Daughters of Merciful Love was formed in 1983 by Father Antonio Mansilla, a Jesuit, in Seville. Within the canonical law of the Catholic Church, it is a public association of the faithful approved by the church, but not a religious congregation. In June 2024, it was affirmed as a public association by the Archbishop of Madrid, a step on the way to becoming an official order of the church.

“This is very common in the Catholic Church, that before congregations are created, they function for a few years in an experimental way, as an association of faithful, until the authority of the church approves it,” said Luis Santamaria, founder of the Ibero-American Network for the Study of Sects (RIES), who has studied HAM.

Santamaria believes that HAM has exploited the difficult backgrounds of some of its members — “family problems, breakups, the recent loss of a loved one,” he said. “The key to entering the HAM was not so much proper vocational discernment and spiritual accompaniment, but rather a rapid process with a certain degree of manipulation, doctrinally based on a double fear: eschatological fear, that end times are near and we are the group chosen by God, and fear of the Devil supposedly lurking around every corner, and would also act through their relatives, friends, and even the ordinary structures and people of the Catholic Church itself.”

Miguel Perlado, a clinical psychologist who has worked with some of the victims and their families, said: “There are some elements which without any doubt show us that there is a cult-like operation of this group, in the type of a sect.”

He identifies six elements of HAM that could be considered sect-like: the figure of a charismatic leader and the cult of personality; the isolation and control of relationships and environment; the invasion and manipulation of inner consciousness; deprivation — or continuous and systematic exhaustion; spiritual, physical and sexual abuse under mystical pretexts; and recruitment through a bombardment of love.

When all of her friends at school told her they were going to a weekend summer camp run by the Daughters of Merciful Love, “Maria” begged her parents to let her go too.

“I loved it, the brothers and sisters are young, they’re smiling, so nice, they hug you, tell you they love you,” she said.

The long days were taken up with praying and confession. Co-ordinators encouraged the teenagers to share their deepest and darkest secrets, suffering, and intimacies, in front of strangers, calling it “confession”.

“It’s almost like a competition to share the worst,” said Maria.

Newcomers had phones and watches taken from them. Maria says she later realised they had been made to pray until about 3am before waking at 8am “to try to make you bare your soul”. This, she said, heightened her emotional state: “You’re super tired and more vulnerable, emotional.” But she “loved” the retreat.

Quickly, all of Maria’s free time was spent within the community. “Every weekend, all the time, there are activities. That’s how they hook you in.” She says she became separated from friends and family. “They brainwash you.”

Members’ names are changed to a biblical name, chosen by Marimi, who has been supposedly told by God.

Relatives of members also began to observe that their loved ones “spoke of the family in very critical terms, even with suspicion and distrust,” Perlado said. “At the same time, they began to refer to Marimi as ‘mami’ or ‘mother’.”

A veil of secrecy is lowered over your life, said Maria. “The motto is, ‘What happens here, stays here,’ you can’t share it with outsiders.”

‘Her will was God’s will’

With trembling hands, “Carmen” said her daughter, “Lucia”, was recruited in a similar way. One week, Lucia convinced her family to join her at Mass with HAM. “It looked like a sect,” said her mother. “It looked weird — very exaggerated singing and praying. It looked like they were drugged.”

Young men and women report quickly being made to feel special and told by senior members that they have a “calling” and have been “chosen” to join.

Some leave their studies and family homes and cut contact with friend to live within the group. Family visits are allowed once a month.

“Monica” left HAM about two years ago. “We had to ask permission to go outside,” she said. “When I told them I wanted to leave, they put me in isolation. If you try to leave, they say you are being deceived by the Devil.”

She added: “They tell you that you have to obey and to completely surrender yourself to Marimi´s will, who acted as if her will was God’s will.”

“Carlos”, a former member of the Brotherhood, said: “You had to cut off your roots from the earth to be in heaven.”

The structure of both male and female associations is hierarchical. Marimi is the “superior” and another superior brother and sister is in each house. They say Marimi’s position as the leader was unchallenged and rejecting it was akin to rejecting God. “Marimi knows everything and decides everything,” said Monica. “And Marimi is never wrong.”

Luis Santamaria said that within HAM there was “a pathological glorification” of the leader, as well as the founder, Father Antonio. “Both are considered holy people and, in Marimi’s case, she is regarded as the only direct channel of communication with God,” he added. All followers had a cross containing a lock of her hair.

Carlos said that “at Christmas, they gave us pieces of Marimi’s shirt. We had photos, prints of her, as if she was a saint.”

Perlado says that this behaviour is characteristic of a cult. “The devotees, the followers, carry small relics of Marini, for example, pieces of her clothes, or celebrate the birthday of the founder … they address her as a mummy, which not only denaturalises the bond with the biological mother, but also instils an absolute dependence on the founder.”

Former members say inside the house there was one mobile phone for everyone to use, kept by the mother or brother superior — and all conversations were checked. Emails were first sent to a superior sister, who decided if they should then be delivered. All women had to wear a simple black habit and shirt.

Everything was monitored. “You couldn’t read a book without permission,” said Carlos. “Even from the library we had at home. That would be a sin — and if you sin you have to ask for penance which is humiliation in front of the community.”

Tools were given to members which they could use to physically abuse themselves, Carlos alleged. “They give you a spiked cilice and a whip,” he said. A cilice is something, like a hair shirt, worn to irritate the skin. They were expected to wear this for an hour or more per day.

‘We were the chosen ones’

Brothers and sisters of HAM do not have jobs. Money is provided by donations from the wider community of lay members.

HAM relied on food banks and meals were allegedly restricted. “I lost 15kg in six months,” said Carlos.

Women could not open the fridge or eat when they wanted to. “When it came to the food Marimi was eating, she had different meals,” Monica said.

Former members describe feeling a “psychological dependency” on HAM. “I was young, I felt like I couldn’t make decisions, and suddenly there was a person telling me what I had to do,” Carlos said.

The houses kept candles blessed by Father Antonio in anticipation of the end of the world. “We were the chosen ones, so that when the great punishment came, the end of the world, we would support the souls that would remain alive, because many would die,” said Monica.

Several victims report being given medication — including antidepressants — by those in charge.

Carlos also claims he was coerced into a sexual relationship with a senior figure. “Every night I went to bed and I asked God, ‘Tomorrow don’t open my eyes’.”

He expressed a wish to leave but had no contact with the outside world. As a result, he claims: “They started to medicate me. They gave me antidepressants without a medical prescription.”

The women, too, say they were administered medication by those in charge. “If you start to rebel, or question things, they tell you it’s the Devil,” said Monica. “They isolate you and could even give you psychiatric medication.” She added: “Marimi also decided which sister could go to the doctor and it was always under supervision.”

This is something Santamaria has seen in women he has counselled. “A significant number of the girls are taking psychiatric medication, and both among those still inside and those who have managed to leave, there are serious cases of psychosomatic manifestations resulting from the trauma they have experienced,” he said.

Last year, when the church ordered the intervention and Marimi was removed, so too were 20 young women who had recently joined HAM.

Marimi is now thought to live between Mexico and Seville but allegedly continues HAM activities, coaching young people in person in Toledo.

Santamaria said: “It would be astonishingly naive to think that the physical separation of the leader would be enough to prevent her influence over her followers from continuing.”

“Where is the church in all of this?” said Monica. “People are still trapped inside, suffering. The church has a responsibility to care for them.”

Lucia is now living back at home, but Carmen said her daughter was still plagued by intrusive thoughts. “It’s been seven months since she left, and she still believes the Devil is punishing her.”

Human trafficking and cults have a lot in common. Leaders in both kinds of enterprises manipulate young people and adults for their own gain.
Traffickers and cult leaders use deception to recruit their targets. They find out what potential recruits value and exploit it. Most commonly, they provide false offers of financial gain, romance, community, or fame—whatever it takes. Labor traffickers entice their targets by promising desirable working conditions and wages.
Cult leaders and traffickers groom their new recruits. They build and strengthen interpersonal bonds through gifts, affection, kind words, and welcoming acts. New recruits let down their guard. Then they become entrapped and find it impossible to leave.
Cult leaders and traffickers shape their targets to accept increasingly difficult conditions. They desensitize recruits to abuse. A sex trafficker posing as a boyfriend might ask his girlfriend to “prove her love” by having sex with his friend. Or a sex trafficker might promise a career in modeling. Cult leaders ask new members to prove their dedication by turning over money and cutting off previous relationships. Labor traffickers make “deals” where the targets end up feeling like they owe money and will risk legal trouble if they try to flee.
Trafficking is immensely profitable because humans can be sold and re-sold. Gangs that once dealt drugs have discovered that trafficking in (young) women and men can yield them a greater profit over a longer period. Many gangs engage in both drug and human trafficking. Each facilitates the other.
Cults don’t all look the same. When people think of cults, they often think of recruits with shaved heads and orange robes, chanting and begging on the streets. But, as Boyle-Laisure points out, cults are not all religious. They could be political, terrorist, commercial, or some combination of these.
Thought reform, brainwashing, and coercive control all refer to the same processes. Traffickers, cult and gang leaders, and domestic and sexual abusers all use similar social and psychological pressures to change the way targets think and act. Targets’ attitudes and self-images change. The unthinkable gradually seems acceptable, inevitable, or even welcome. For instance, a new cult member who was once close to his family might write them off as unacceptable. A newly recruited trafficking victim who was a virgin when she met her “boyfriend” might consent to sex with others, at his request, and convince herself that she is happy to have made him happy. WRSP: Clearwater City Council approves giving street to Church of Scientology to build L. Ron Hubbard Hall

"Clearwater City Council gave the green light Thursday night for the Church of Scientology to take over a short city street that’s key to building L. Ron Hubbard Hall, a 3500-person venue named after its controversial founder.

The decision came after more than an hour of public comment that councilmembers cut short. Hundreds of Scientologists and dozens of their critics once again packed the downtown library where council meetings are held.

“My wife and I have personally contributed millions of dollars toward the L. Ron Hubbard Hall since the inception of this project because we believe in what it will mean for future generations of parishioners and for downtown Clearwater,” said Scientologist Stu Sjouwerman, the billionaire tech founder of KnowBe4, the world's largest integrated security awareness training and simulated phishing platform. “It's the completion of a vision that has been discussed for decades and the final piece to complete [Scientology’s] downtown campus.”

This is not the church's first attempt. In 2025, Scientology withdrew a similar application shortly before a final city vote, saying it intended to revise and resubmit the proposal. It did exactly that in 2026.

Critics argue that South Garden Avenue is public land and should remain open to everyone. They believe transferring the roadway would further consolidate Scientology's already extensive influence over downtown Clearwater. The program still has places for this coming September 2026. It can be studied over 1 or 2 years and consists of live lectures (also recorded), interactive seminars, 1:1 tutor support, loads of resources via a dedicated website, and the opportunity to conduct ground-breaking empirical research in the capstone dissertation module. The program has already had over 150 students from a wide diversity of countries across four continents, some of whom are existing professionals in the field and others who are looking to do work in this area where there is a huge need for more expertise and more research."

A Superior Court judge granted new representation for one of two Zizian defendants, while the other will be tried for competency in March.

Richard Jones pleaded guilty to three counts of sexually abusing a child in the ’80s while he was volunteering at Christian Growth Centre, now known as Horizon Church, in Sydney’s south.

Richard Jones has been jailed for sexually assaulting a girl while he worked the Horizon Church in Sutherland.

Morrison regularly attends the pentecostal church in Sutherland, which covered up the abuse at the time.

The victim, aged 10 and 11 at the time of offending, and her family grew close with Jones and his family. They were devout members of the church, with the children attending after-school events. The girl was also in the choir, church band and kids’ clubs.

She became close friends with Jones’ daughter and regularly spent Friday nights at their home on sleepovers.

Church leaders accused of child abuse cover-up named in parliament

During the night, Jones, who was aged between 45 and 46 at the time, would creep into the room, wake the girl and take her downstairs to the living room, where he sexually abused her. He was charged over two incidents in 1985; however, the court heard the abuse took place on more occasions.

He told the victim that he “loved” her and “missed” her during one incident of sexual abuse, which Judge David Scully said was “emotional manipulation”.

The young girl initially believed she was in a relationship with Jones but realised she was being abused after taking a sexual education class in school.

When Jones and his family moved interstate to Western Australia in 1985 he wrote a letter to the child, telling her they were moving “to ensure you never have to be reminded of me again” and to “put distance between the old me that committed the crimes against you”.

When Jones and his family returned to NSW in 1990 they attended a dinner at the victim’s family home. There, Jones thanked the girl for her support.

“Thank you. You helped me during a very difficult time,” he said.

The girl understood that to mean he was thanking her for the abuse, which triggered “intense” feelings. She told her mother about the abuse she had endured.

A week later, Jones, the victim and her mother met with their pastor, John Wilkinson, at his home, where Jones admitted the abuse. “It’s true, it happened,” he said.

Sam said the abuse left him unable to tell his children he loved them.

Jones suggested he get support and undertook 12 months of counselling. Wilkinson didn’t report the abuse to the police, and the church covered up the offending.

Jones, the victim and their families continued attending the Sutherland church together for years.

In 2024, when the victim turned 50, she reported the abuse to Horizon’s pastor, who then contacted police. Jones was arrested in Landsdale in WA, charged in November that year and pleaded guilty to three of the 10 counts of abuse.

In her victim impact statement the woman wrote that the abuse had harmful lifelong effects, impacting her relationship with her husband and her mental health, her feelings of guilt and her worries about what might happen to her own children.

“[She was] craving affection and not being able to engage in the sort of normal affection, including with her husband,” Scully said.

In sentencing, Scully took into account Jones’ advanced age, ill health – he suffers from memory and hearing loss, heart conditions and depression – along with the recent death of his wife, which delayed sentencing.

“The offending took place over 40 years ago. When confronted with allegations, he immediately accepted responsibility. His age and health mean he is very unlikely to reoffend, and he has excellent prospects of rehabilitation,” he said.

He rejected Jones’ request to be placed on a community corrections order, noting it was inappropriate “in circumstances where he has led a lifetime free of criminal punishment”.

Using a walker and accompanied by his daughter, Jones emptied his pockets of possessions ahead of the sentencing. He sat with his eyes closed as Scully read the details of his offending.

The victim-survivor was present in court with several supporters. She cannot be named for legal reasons.

Victim in Washington State sent more than $2 million to “psychic” for “cleansing” of alleged curse

Seattle – Two Texas residents were arrested this week on an indictment from the Western District of Washington for their scheme to defraud emotionally vulnerable victims by posing as “psychics” who could “cleanse” the victims’ romantic bad luck, announced First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd. Bridgette Doreen Evans, AKA Jolene Travis, 47, and her partner, Vinnie John Uwanawich, 44, of Frisco, Texas, will make their initial appearance in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Texas today on charges of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, four counts of wire fraud, and four counts of mail fraud.

“As alleged in the indictment, these perpetrators of ‘fortune teller fraud’ came into the lives of these victims at a time when their judgement was clouded by emotional loss and feelings of hopelessness,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Floyd. “Ms. Evans preyed upon their needs, convincing victims that she could ‘remove a curse’ and help them find love. In truth her scheme was simply to help herself to their wealth, leaving them further devastated.”

“This case is yet another demonstration of how fraudsters exploit vulnerable situations to gain their victims' trust, even creating fake identities in an attempt to evade accountability and further schemes that last years,” said W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office. “The schemes may change, but the greed driving them does not. The FBI and our partners will follow the money to unravel these scams and ensure the conspirators responsible face the consequences of their actions.”

According to the indictment, Evans and Uwanawich stole at least $2.5 million from at least three victims between April 2021 and July 2024. Evans operated under the fake name Jolene Travis and advertised her “psychic services” on social media. Her posts were designed to attract people who were struggling with romantic or personal problems: people experiencing divorce, death of a loved one or feelings of isolation.

Evans allegedly told the victims she could perform readings and rituals to determine the cause of their misfortune. Ultimately, she told them their “curse” was tied to their money or finances. After asking for a detailed accounting of the victims’ financial holdings, she would tell the victim the only way to remove the curse was to liquidate the holdings and send the money in gold coins or cash so that she could “cleanse” the money. She represented to the victims that after she cleaned it, she would return it to them. While she returned some small amounts to clients to lull them into further trusting her, she never returned the vast majority of the $2.5 million.

Uwanawich, Evans’ husband, facilitated her fraud by managing bank accounts that received payments from victims, selling gold coins, transferring and spending fraud proceeds, and vouching for Evans with victims.

The indictment details how Evans used the fake identity because she had previously been convicted of psychic frauds in Florida and Texas. In fact, during part of the fraud scheme, Evans was incarcerated in Florida, so Evans’ co-conspirators took on the Jolene Travis alias to keep the fraud going.

Evans allegedly convinced a second victim to send $86,000 in electronic payments to Evans for her “cleansing work.” A third victim was defrauded of more than $258,000 when Evans convinced her to take out loans to buy a Corvette to be delivered to Evans and to give Evans access to her credit cards to pay off the victim’s “karmic debts.”

Evans also operated under the names Joy John and Joy Paige. The FBI continues to investigate the scheme and wants anyone who thinks they may be a victim to report the crime to www.ic3.gov.

Conspiracy, mail fraud, and wire fraud crimes are all punishable by up to twenty years in prison.

The charges contained in the indictment are only allegations. A person is presumed innocent unless and until he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The case is being investigated by the FBI.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dane A. Westermeyer. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Texas is assisting with the initial appearance today.

FRISCO, Texas - A Texas couple has been arrested on federal charges for allegedly running a multi-year "fortune-teller fraud" scheme that swindled emotionally vulnerable victims out of at least $2.5 million.

Bridgette Doreen Evans, 47, and her husband, Vinnie John Uwanawich, 44, both of Frisco, Texas, are facing charges of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, alongside four counts each of wire and mail fraud. The made an initial court appearance last week in the Eastern District of Texas.

According to an indictment filed in the Western District of Washington, Evans posed as a psychic named "Jolene Travis," using social media to target individuals struggling with divorce, isolation, or the death of a loved one.

Cursed cash

The backstory: Prosecutors allege that between April 2021 and July 2024, Evans convinced victims that their personal and romantic misfortunes were tied to a financial "curse." After obtaining detailed accounts of the victims' finances, Evans allegedly told them the only way to break the curse was to liquidate their holdings and ship the funds to her in cash or gold coins for a spiritual "cleansing."

Evans allegedly promised the victims that the money would be returned after it was purified. Instead, prosecutors say she kept the vast majority of the funds, occasionally returning small amounts only to "lull" the victims into a false sense of security.

One Washington state victim alone sent more than $2 million to the couple, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"These perpetrators of ‘fortune-teller fraud’ came into the lives of these victims at a time when their judgment was clouded by emotional loss and feelings of hopelessness," First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd said in a statement. "Ms. Evans preyed upon their needs... leaving them further devastated."

Federal authorities noted that Evans used multiple aliases, including Jolene Travis, Joy John, and Joy Paige, to obscure her identity because she had prior convictions for psychic fraud in Texas and Florida. The scheme was so institutionalized that when Evans was briefly incarcerated in Florida during the conspiracy, her co-conspirators took over the "Jolene Travis" alias to keep the operation running, the indictment states.

Fortune-teller fraud

Uwanawich is accused of facilitating the fraud by managing the bank accounts that received the stolen money, selling the gold coins, and directly vouching for Evans to suspicious victims.

The indictment details multiple other victims, including one who sent $86,000 in electronic payments, and a third who was defrauded of $258,000. In the latter case, Evans allegedly convinced the victim to open credit cards and take out car loans to buy a Chevrolet Corvette for Evans in order to clear "karmic debts."

I propose that a subset of cult leaders may exhibit a combination of dark triad personality traits and psychological features associated with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), a non-convulsive form of epilepsy that can produce behavioral and experiential characteristics commonly observed in cult leaders.

Traits common to both contexts include a strong sense of personal destiny, hypermoralism (black-and-white thinking), paranoia, religiosity, philosophic interest, emotionality, anger, aggression, stickiness, obsessionalism, humorlessness, and a tendency for repetition. People with TLE often report frequent awe experiences, and prolonged states of fervor. They may appear unusually intense and driven, speak for many hours at a time, and experience subjective states of “felt understanding” and “felt importance.” Notably, olfactory hallucinations—a well-documented feature of TLE—have been described in historical accounts of several well-known cult leaders.

Together, these experiences may generate a compelling interpersonal effect, in which others feel profoundly known or understood. The accompanying sense of importance makes them feel that they have an exceptionally important message to the world. This can manifest as hypergraphia or compulsive self-documentation. This might explain why, ever since the advent of video recorders, many cult leaders obsessively film themselves – at times even creating incriminating evidence in the process.

In recent years, I have explored my hypothesis through preliminary qualitative observations of former members of small, little-known cults. When presented with a list of TLE-associated traits, all participants independently reported strong overlap with their cult leader’s behavior. If my assertion is correct, cult-awareness education could benefit by including discussion of TLE.

But where did these ideas come from, and why are they so compelling to so many of us? This talk explores the unique cultural movement known as “Buddhist modernism” and how it has indelibly shaped our default conceptions of this Asian religion and its rituals. We will examine how meditation came to be understood as a secular, therapeutic, and personal spiritual practice that is the essence of Buddhism, and how this diverse historical tradition came to be cast not as a religion at all but rather as an exceptional science of mind. Finally, we will explore how Buddhist modernist discourse and praxis can lead to a range of meditation-related challenges, and how even a basic appreciation of this cultural movement can help us make sense of important parts of many of our meditation journeys—indeed, the very water we have been swimming in without recognizing or even consenting to its assumptions, values, and norms."

Dr. Fisher recently received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies and Cognitive Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2011 before joining the Clinical and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at Brown University, where he managed the 'Varieties of Contemplative Experience' (VCE) study from 2012-2015. A Superior Court judge granted new representation for one of two Zizian defendants, while the other will be tried for competency in March.

Suri Dao and Alexander Jeffrey are members of the Zizians, a loosely organized, cult-like group of radical vegans who claim artificial intelligence poses a threat to humanity. The two are among about 10 known followers of blogger Jack “Ziz” LaSota, a 34-year-old transgender woman who moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2016.

The group has been linked to six killings nationwide, including Lind’s death. Fellow Zizian Maximilian Snyder is accused of fatally stabbing Lind in Vallejo on Jan. 17, 2025. Lind had been scheduled to testify in Dao and Leatham’s case. Snyder has pleaded not guilty, and his preliminary hearing is set for April 21.

LaSota, a former aspiring tech worker, moved to the Bay Area to study the risks posed by artificial intelligence and later built a following among AI theorists and tech bloggers for her extreme views on AI, veganism, and gender.

Working as an actor, she was at a film festival when she met a member of NXIVM, who told her that the group – founded by Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman – helped members reach their goals while living ethically and promoting world peace, through workshops on success and self-improvement."

They were expected to practice daily acts of denial, forgoing sugar and caffeine, and told to take cold showers as a penance."
