Traditional Masks:
African masks are more than just decorative objects; they are powerful symbols of spirituality, identity, and ritual. Handcrafted by skilled artisans using age-old techniques, these masks come in a variety of styles, each with its own significance. From the bold geometric patterns of the Dan tribe to the intricate beadwork of the Yoruba people, each mask reflects the unique cultural heritage of its creators.

Textiles and Fabrics:
African textiles are renowned for their vibrant colors, bold patterns, and exquisite craftsmanship. Whether it's the intricate kente cloth of Ghana, the geometric motifs of mud cloth from Mali, or the colorful wax prints of West Africa, these textiles add a touch of elegance and authenticity to any space. Adorn your home with throw pillows, tapestries, or even upholstery featuring these stunning fabrics to create a truly immersive African-inspired ambiance.

Sculpture and Carvings:
From the majestic wooden sculptures of the Makonde tribe to the delicate ivory carvings of the Baule people, African sculpture encompasses a wide range of styles and materials. Each sculpture tells a story, depicting themes such as ancestral spirits, fertility, and the cycle of life. Incorporate these sculptural masterpieces into your home decor to add depth, texture, and a sense of cultural heritage.

Basketry and Weaving:
African basketry and weaving techniques are as diverse as the continent itself, with each region boasting its own unique styles and materials. From the intricately woven baskets of the Zulu people to the colorful sisal baskets of the Kuba tribe, these functional works of art are both beautiful and practical. Use them as storage solutions, wall decor, or even as statement pieces on your tabletops to infuse your home with the warmth and authenticity of African craftsmanship.

Paintings and Art Prints:
African art is not limited to traditional forms; contemporary African artists are also making waves in the global art scene with their bold, expressive works. From abstract paintings inspired by the rhythms of traditional music to vibrant art prints depicting scenes of everyday life, these modern interpretations of African culture add a fresh and dynamic dimension to any interior space.

Ethnic Decor Accents:
Finally, no African-inspired interior would be complete without a selection of ethnic decor accents to tie the look together. Think hand-carved wooden figurines, intricately beaded jewelry boxes, and ceramic pottery adorned with tribal motifs.
Creating a Cultural Oasis: Tips for Designing a Global-Inspired Garden

Are you dreaming of transforming your outdoor space into a vibrant tapestry of cultures from around the world? A global-inspired garden can be a breathtaking retreat, offering a harmonious blend of colors, scents, and textures that reflect the rich diversity of our planet. At Cultural Interiors, we believe that your garden can be more than just a collection of plants – it can be a sanctuary that celebrates the beauty of different cultures. In this blog post, we'll explore some tips and examples to help you design your own cultural oasis right in your backyard.

1. Research Cultural Symbolism:

Take some time to research the flora and fauna that hold cultural significance in various parts of the world. For example, the cherry blossom is revered in Japanese culture for its ephemeral beauty and symbolizes renewal and the fleeting nature of life.

2. Incorporate Traditional Elements:

Integrate traditional architectural elements or garden features from different cultures into your design. For instance, you could add a Moroccan-style fountain as a focal point or install a Zen garden inspired by Japanese rock gardens for a tranquil ambiance.

3. Embrace Diversity in Plant Selection:

Choose plants native to different regions of the world to create a diverse landscape that thrives in your climate. Mix exotic blooms like orchids from Southeast Asia with hardy succulents from Africa, or plant a Mediterranean herb garden featuring rosemary, lavender, and thyme.

4. Create Cultural Zones:

Designate specific areas of your garden to represent different cultures, each with its own theme and plant palette. For example, you could have a Mediterranean-inspired corner with olive trees and terracotta pots, a tropical oasis with lush palms and colorful orchids, and a tranquil Asian garden with bamboo groves and bonsai trees.

5. Add Artistic Accents:

Enhance the cultural theme of your garden with artistic accents such as sculptures, pottery, or handmade textiles. A striking statue of Buddha or a mosaic-tiled fountain can add a touch of elegance and authenticity to your outdoor space.

6. Incorporate Symbolic Colors:

Colors hold symbolic meaning in many cultures, so consider incorporating them into your garden design. For instance, red is associated with luck and prosperity in Chinese culture, while blue symbolizes spirituality and tranquility in Islamic art.

7. Cultivate Community:

Use your global-inspired garden as a platform for cultural exchange and community engagement. Host multicultural events, garden tours, or themed gatherings where people can come together to celebrate and learn about different cultures.

8. Practice Sustainable Gardening:

Respect the environment and cultural traditions by practicing sustainable gardening techniques. Use organic fertilizers, conserve water, and choose native plants that support local wildlife and ecosystems.

9. Personalize Your Space:

Infuse your own heritage and personality into your garden design by incorporating elements that resonate with you personally. Whether it's a family heirloom, a cherished artifact, or a favorite plant from your homeland, let your garden tell the story of who you are and where you come from.

10. Cultivate a Sense of Wonder:

Above all, let your global-inspired garden be a source of inspiration, beauty, and wonder. Create hidden pathways, secret gardens, and inviting seating areas where you can immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and scents of the world.

As you embark on your journey to design a cultural oasis in your backyard, remember that the possibilities are as endless as the diversity of cultures on our planet. With a little creativity, imagination, and a touch of cultural flair, you can create a garden that not only reflects the beauty of different traditions but also nourishes your soul and connects you to the world around you.

So why wait? Start planning your global-inspired garden today with Cultural Interiors, your destination for cultural treasures that inspire and delight. Let your garden be a testament to the beauty of cultural diversity and a celebration of our shared humanity.

But for most of us there is nothing like just kicking' back and relaxing with a hot cup of tea.

Well, we would like to maximize your blissful experience by offering you our latest best kept secret… Yixing Clay Teapots.

What makes them so special? For starters, these works of art have been around since the 10th century and date back to the Ming Dynasty. A monk from from a Temple in Yixing (pronounced, ee-shing) handcrafted these fine quality teapots from clay found in the nearby hills. In 1958, the Yixing Zisha Factory opened to continued producing these wonderful fine pottery wares, and has a commercial showroom that has become a popular tourist destination for many Chinese.

Now we have them to share with you!

Yixing teapots come in many styles from the whimsical, to formal. Yizing teapots have unique brewing qualities and are meant for use with traditional Black and Oolong teas, but can also be used to enjoy Green, white and Red teas. Because of the clay these teapots are made of, the water must be cooled to 185ºF before pouring the water into the pot. Yixing teapots have the unique ability to absorb a the flavor and color of the tea and should never be washed with soap. Instead they should be rinsed out and allowed to air dry. The serious tea drinker will only steep one type of tea as not to corrupt the seasoned pot. Yixing teapots are smaller than their western counterparts, in part because they tend to hold the heat of the tea so it can be enjoyed longer.

Cultural Interiors West invites you to indulge in the experience of the Art of Tea and pamper yourself with these one of a kind artisan teapots.

Fair Trade:Fairly Traded

From African Baule masks to handmade soap almost every item has a story in Cultural Interiors West. I chose Gail Hawkins to showcase her store during October which is nation-wide Fair Trade month.
Gail continues to share those stories in her store’s location at 5406 West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, where she relocated exactly one year ago. Everyone who walks into the store is pleasantly surprised to find a plethora of quality art items, housewares, jewelry, textiles, organic teas, and exquisite objets d’ art.

“Although my husband, family and I have had opportunities to travel throughout the world, it’s difficult to meet artisans unless your journey is off the beaten path, so I’m seeking a fair trade organization to assist my endeavors to bring more global art and wares to the store. I believe in by doing so, the community and surrounding vicinities become more aware of sharing art on a world-wide basis, and knowing that the artisans are getting paid fair wages helps everyone to have a heartfelt appreciation for their purchase. It also shows the customer my business’s core belief system and how fair trade is truly beneficial. I also like to help people and add to their prosperity by assisting their abilities to make a living by creating their crafts.”

Here’s a picture of our daughter Piatra in Versailles last year during our family’s trip to Paris…
Gail chooses products sold by purchasing online and visiting local vendors as well as domestic and international trade shows. It also helps to have vendors who come to the store to view the lay of the land and make suggestions about what merchandise would be a proper fit for the store.
Every area of the store is created with a theme for the type of merchandise display whether it is a hand-sewn Kantha silk scarf or Haitian hand-tooled 3-D wall sculpture. Gail states “My store is like a museum, an art gallery, jewelry store and most recently a small library because we’ve acquired a few rare out of print books. And, I love the variety of people who come in.
“Adhering to fair trade principles such as fair pay, I seek local artisans and jewelers who wish to showcase their wares in a neighborhood store venue. We recently began having “Third Thursdays on Pico” along with the other business owners so we get an opportunity to mix and mingle and it’s always a great experience.”

In celebration of Fair Trade Month and just being a part of the greater community, the credo for the month of October is to “shop locally and help globally.” “I hope the bevy of new residents, local businesses and regular customers will be supportive of Cultural Interiors West and fair trade as we welcome everyone into the community.”

A Monday morning ride to the valley brought Gail and I to a most unusual almost clandestine destination. GPS taking us directly to the warehouse of Eric Chaim Kline Bookseller, we arrived a bit breathless from taking the stairs and upon entering – rendered totally breathless…

As far as the eye could see, floor to ceiling, book shelves galore, there were books! Vintage, out of print, one of a kind, numerous volumes of religious and holy books. There were art books depicting the world’s most precious and treasured artifacts; books to tell anyone and everyone anything they ever wanted to know about everything. Books to tell you something to peak your interest – to seed and fertilize the mind. There were books!

Gail and I began the arduous task of hand picking books that we believed our clientele would enjoy and purchase for their homes, offices and present to others as a gift. It took hours but it seemed like only minutes because these books were unbelievably incredible, and after copying each respective cover, carefully counting and cataloging our bounty, we humbly faced Eric with sincere appreciation for his sharing the books with us.

Now cutting to the chase, you’ve got to come to spend some time perusing the treasurers. We’re sure the rarities will appeal to your interests and we look forward to welcoming you in to our new world at Cultural Interiors West.
