A walk to explore Joburg street art with Derek Smith.

We’re doing the walk on Tuesday 4 Jan and again on Sunday 16 Jan 2011.

We meet in front of Museum Africa at 07:30.
Park at the Market Theatre Parking off Miram Makeba Street, Newtown.

SUNDAY 16th: Explore incredible works under the double-decker motorway next to Museum Africa. From Newtown we drive in convoy to Louis Botha Ave where there’s a lot of street art. We then head into Troyeville where there is lots of graffiti and photo opportunities. We end at the Troyeville Hotel for an early lunch.

TUESDAY 4th: From Newtown we drive to Pageview and then do the Parkhurst Skatepark and stop at the Odd Cafe in Greenside that has been done by Mars & his crew recently for an early lunch.

DIRECTIONS TO MEET UP PARKING: From Jan Smuts Ave (becomes Bertha) cross Nelson Mandela bridge. Right at first robots into Carr Street. Left at robots into Miriam Makeba (there’s a garage and a sign that says market Theatre parking). Right into parking at robot.

There will be a projector set up and it will be great if everyone could bring along about 5-10 photos on a flash drive to talk about for a few minutes. The time each person will have is going to be dependent on how many people would like to partake in speaking about their photos in our show and tell.

The venue can accommodate about 30 people and we could head
to a venue in Linden, Rosebank, Parkhurst or Melville after for dinner.

Join on Saturday 27 November as we explore Yeoville and it’s colourful streets. Bring along a camera and good walking shoes.

REVIEW: The title sounds lightweight and inconsequential, but this is a glorious and intense piece of theatre for the theatre-going cognoscenti. For people looking for brilliant acting, a challenging, thought-provoking script, witty dialogue, and tight direction where every moment is flawless. Viva La Vidais a unique project of Tango, Folklore, Jazz and Movie, produced by the Dutch group ‘Quinteto Tango Extremo’, featuring three guest soloists. The six strong formation realises a very exciting melting pot of Tango, Folklore (to name style: Candombe, Chacarera, Milonga and Milongon) combined with jazz and improvisation.

The basis for City Breath will consist of a collection of around 20 short video ‘breaths’ or ‘gasps’, conceptual pieces and brief emotional encounters with places that can not be expressed in the dominant mode of narrative cinema or television. These breaths or essences seek to interrogate the official understandings of our cities given to us in television, film and other mass media.

Interrogating, breaking and manipulating tired historical forms, City Breath seeks new forms, new film making strategies and approaches, new sound and image technologies, new aims and intentions in the tradition of the international avant-garde. It relates strongly the new short attention span cinema of the digital age and the skillfully produced low or no budget film. To this end, City Breath is facilitating and encouraging new collaborations between South African poets, performance artists, dancers, alternative filmmakers, experimental animators, sound and video artists, as well as curating submissions from established artists. The emphasis will be on the emergent genres of the video poem, the screen dance / performance and experimental animation. We will be looking for conceptual pieces that can hold the viewer’s attention.

Learn about various ingredients ~ how to use them ~ how to identify them. Vietnamese.. Japanese.. Indonesian.. Chinese.. Thai.. Korean Cuisine. We’ll also visit a Buddhist meditation centre and learn about Chinese Culture.
