Terrebone QC Canada. Real name / Vrai nom: Gilles Francis Bernier

Instrumental blues solo guitar ad-libs or improvisations; member of Chimères between 2002 and 2010. A cocktail mix of Roy Buchanan, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour and a host of others too numerous to mention yet he has his own style. His passion and love for music is obvious as spoken of in the classic Canned Heat song Fried Hockey Boogie: “Love can be found anywhere, even in a guitar.”

Instrumental blues guitare solo ad-libs ou improvisations ; membre de Chimères entre 2002 et 2010. Un mélange de cocktail de Roy Buchanan, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour et une foule d'autres trop nombreux à énumérer, mais il a son propre style. Sa passion et son amour pour la musique est évidents, comme dans la chanson classique de Canned Heat, Fried Hockey Boogie « L’amour se trouvent n'importe où, même dans une guitare. »

Son projet le plus ambitieux à ce jour de Jean Félix Mailloux s'est concrétisé hier soir comme il est croisé avec le célèbre pianiste François Bourassa et 5 autres musiciens. Une excursion chargée d'émotion dans l'imagination de ce bassiste et compositeur polyvalent, la musique de Mailloux enjambe la région de l'univers musical où le jazz, le classique et le world-beat (Japonais, Europe de l'est et de Méditerranée étaient proéminents) se combinent pour former un son rêve qui était principalement apaisante et parfois ludique. Les changements d'accords ont été rapide, furieux et exécutée au bon moment , en maintenant le même niveau d'excitation tout au long de la soirée.

In a seedy Manchester gym, corner men Rex and his apprentice Vinnie are preparing for a key matchup in a boxing tournament. Their boy Little T is favoured to win but gangster elements have entered into the picture. Doxy, whose reputation has barred him from all boxing gyms, has other ideas. Rex and Vinnie seek to take advantage of this. This is a well written and well performed and enjoyable nasty and brutal comedy that superbly shows that things are rarely what they seem to be. The chemistry between Rosenstein and Moore is compelling as they play off each other’s aspirations and insecurities. Their mastery of the Manchester dialect is perfect.

Dans un gymnase de Manchester miteux, hommes de coin Rex et son apprenti Vinnie sont en préparation pour un match clé dans un tournoi de boxe. Leur gamin Little T est favorisé a gagner mais des éléments gangster rentre dans la scène. Doxy, dont sa réputation l’a barré de tous les gymnases de boxe, a d'autres idées. Rex et Vinnie cherchent à profiter de ceci. C'est une comédie méchante et brutale bien écrite et bien jouée et agréable qui superbement montre que les choses sont rarement ce qu'elles semblent d’être. L'alchimie entre Rosenstein et Moore est convaincant, car ils jouent au large de leurs aspirations et insécurités. Leur maîtrise du dialecte Manchester est parfaite.

Delphine Bienvenu (as Oracle / Claro), Jean-Robert Bourdage (as the Manager), Trent Pardy (as the Display Assistant) and France Rolland (as the Cosmetic Salesperson) star as Wal-Mart employees in this difficult, dark, surreal fantasy comedy as they recount two parallel stories – Céline Dion’s temporary retirement to take care of her first born and the horrific account of an unknown Isabelle Côté who was abused by her family for 17 years.

The two stories had appeared on opposite pages of a Quebec tabloid and the lines between them often being blurred to the point that the audience would be confused as to what was happening. This actually makes this piece a powerful statement on the dangers of modern society’s grotesque fascination and often deification of celebrities and the average person’s desire to be just like them; a thought provoking play that is not for the faint of heart or for seeking an evening of entertainment.

Delphine Bienvenu (comme Oracle / Claro), Jean-Robert Bourdage (comme le Gérant), Trent Pardy (comme Arrangeur Adjoint) et France Rolland (comme Vendeur Cosmétique) joue des employés de Wal-Mart dans cette comédie fantastique surréaliste, sombre et difficile car ils racontent deux histoires parallèles – la retraite temporaire de Céline Dion pour prendre soin de son premier-né et le compte d'horrible d'un inconnu Isabelle Côté qui a été maltraité par sa famille pour 17 ans.

Les deux histoires étaient apparues sur des pages un en face de l’autre dans un tabloïd de Québec et les lignes entre eux étant souvent floue au point que le public serait confus quant à ce qui se passait. Cela ce fait effectivement totale, une déclaration puissante sur les dangers de la fascination grotesque et souvent la déification des célébrités dans ce société moderne et le désir des gens commun pour être comme eux ; une pièce provoquant la qui n'est pas pour les faibles de cœur ou ce qui cherche une soirée de divertissement.

Born in Bulgaria – father was a classical concert conductor and mother was a classical pianist. She learned classical piano at the age of 9. Won first prize in 1989 at the Swiss Youth Contest in Lucerne. 1992-94 Conservatory of Music in Biel and 1999-2000 studied at ETM in Geneva.

Electronica that hearkens back to the Euro-dance music of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Melodic pop instrumentals combining keyboard and voice.

Né en Bulgarie – père était un chef d'orchestre des concerts de musique classique et la mère était une pianiste classique. Elle apprend le piano classique à l'âge de 9 ans. A remporté le premier prix en 1989 au concours jeunesse Suisse à Lucerne. 1992-94 Le Conservatoire de musique de Bienne et 1999-2000 a étudié à l’ETM à Genève.

Electronica qui nous ramène à l'Euro-dance music de la fin des années 1970 et début des années 1980. Pop mélodiques instrumental combinant clavier et voix.

Since the mid 2000s, due mainly to the international successes of such groups as Arcade Fire and Karkwa, Montreal's diverse, bold and independent music scene has found itself on top of the rock world. Not only exploring this phenomenon, this film also examines the points of connection between the Francophone and Anglophone scenes.

Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way, United Kingdom / Royaume-Uni 2010, 90m, Bruce Ricker

Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and Miles Davis emerged in the 1950s and have left a profound mark on the evolution of jazz. All of them brought jazz to a wider audience. Only Brubeck is still alive and still going strong (He celebrated his 90^th birthday in December of 2010). Clint Eastwood takes us on an emotionally packed and nostalgic tribute to this iconic figure of modern jazz. Along with commentaries by his contemporaries and admirers (including Sting, Keith Emerson, George Lucas, Bill Cosby among others), the film includes archival footage highlighting special moments from Brubeck long and illustrious career.

Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane et Miles Davis a émergé dans les années 1950 et ont laissé une marque profonde sur l'évolution du jazz. Tout d’eux a apporté le jazz à un public plus vaste. Brubeck est toujours vivant et se poursuit toujours (il a fêté son 90e anniversaire en Décembre 2010). Clint Eastwood nous emmène sur un hommage avec émotion emballé et nostalgique à cette figure emblématique du jazz moderne. Barbara, 105m, Christian Petzold

Summer 1980; as punishment for applying for an exit visa from East Germany, Doctor Barbara Woolf has been transferred from a major hospital in Berlin to a small remote country hospital. Jörg, her lover, is making plans for her escape, so she waits and keeps-to-herself. At work, she maintains a facade in order to evade suspicion from the Stasi officer who is watching her. She is very attentive to her patients. Barbara is confused by her boss’s confidence in professional abilities. This is further exasperated when a young girl arrives at the hospital. She is pregnant and does not want to return to ‘work camp.’ A slow moving and multi-layered drama that reveals how when one lives where surveillance is high, one must live daily with lies and aloofness.

Été 1980; comme punition pour demander un visa de sortie de l'Allemagne de l’Est, Docteur Barbara Woolf a été transféré d'un grand hôpital à Berlin dans un petit hôpital de campagne éloignée. Jörg, son amant, fait des plans pour s'échapper, donc elle attend et elle garde à elle-même. Au travail, elle maintient une façade afin d'échapper aux soupçons de l'officier de la Stasi qui la surveille. Elle est très attentive à ses patients. Barbara est confondue par la confiance de son patron dans ces capacités professionnelles. Ceci est plus exaspéré quand une jeune fille arrive à l'hôpital. Elle est enceinte et ne veut pas retourner au « camp de travail. » Un drame lent et à multiple facettes qui révèle comment lorsque l'on vit où la surveillance est élevé, on doit vivre quotidiennement avec des mensonges et de garder ses distances.

Mercy / La Grâce (Gnade), 126m, Matthias Glasner

Niels, a German engineer, is transferred to Hammerfest Norway to oversee operations at a liquid gas pipeline. He decides to bring Maria and Markus, his wife and son. He becomes involved in an affair with his assistant Linda. Maria works overtime at a local hospice. Markus struggles with puberty and to be accepted by his classmates. The family relationship is on the brink of ending. On her way home from a double shift, Maria has a fatal accident; the situation changes. Niels and Maria struggle with guilt over what happened and are torn between remaining silent or telling the police or the parents of the victim. Set against the eerie yet magical background of the Land of the Midnight Sun, this penetrating family drama explores a family struggling to survive and be accepted and dependant on the mercy of the local population in a land where they are outsiders.

Niels, un ingénieur Allemand, est transféré à Hammerfest Norvège pour superviser les opérations à un gazoduc. Il décide d’amener Maria et Markus, son épouse et son fils. Il devient impliqué dans une affaire avec son assistant Linda. Maria travailles des heures supplémentaires à un hospice local. Quand elle est en chemin du retour d'un poste double, Maria a un accident mortel, la situation change. Niels et Maria luttent avec la culpabilité sur ce qui s'est passé et sont déchirés entre rester silencieux ou de dire à la police ou les parents de la victime. Inscrit dans le contexte mystérieux encore magique de la terre du soleil de minuit, ce drame familial pénétrant explore une famille qui luttent pour survivre et être acceptée et la personne à charge sur la miséricorde de la population locale dans un pays où ils sont étrangers.

Home for the Weekend / Un Week-end en Famille (Was Bleibt), 88m, Hans-Christian Schmid

Marko has just published his first book. Living in Berlin since he graduated university, he sees his parents Gitte and Günter twice a year with his wife Tine and son Zowie. This time however he and Tine have separated. Günter has sold his publishing company and is planning his retirement. Marko’s brother Jakob has been operating a dental clinic along with his girlfriend Ella which was financed by Günter. For nearly 30 years Gitte has been suffering from a psychiatric disorder making life difficult for the family. During supper, Gitte makes an announcement that triggers conflicting reactions and upsets everyone’s plans for a peaceful weekend together. She has stopped taking her medication. This powerful film exposes the fragility and often hypocritical aura that envelopes many families in the world of today and how each of us wear the ‘Mask of Silence.’

Marko vient de publier son premier livre. Vivant à Berlin, puisqu'il est diplômé de l'Université, il voit ses parents Gitte et Günter deux fois par an avec sa femme Tine et son fils Zowie. Cette fois cependant lui et Tine ont été séparés. Günter a vendu sa société d'édition et envisage de prendre sa retraite. Jakob, le frère de Marko, opère une clinique dentaire avec sa petite amie Ella, qui a été financée par Günter. Depuis près de 30 ans, Gitte a souffert d'un trouble psychiatrique, ce qui rend la vie difficile pour la famille. Pendant le dîner, Gitte a fait une annonce qui déclenche des réactions contradictoires et bouleverse tous les plans pour un week-end paisible ensemble. Elle a cessé de prendre ses médicaments. Ce film puissant expose la fragilité et l'aura souvent hypocrite que les enveloppes de nombreuses familles dans le monde d'aujourd'hui et comment chacun de nous porter le « masque de Silence. »

Pendant 11 jours, avec Roche Papier Ciseaux de Yan Lanouette Turgeon comme film d'ouverture le 21 Février (au Cinéma Impérial) jusqu'au 3 Mars 2013, plus de 300 films, représentant de la crème de la crème pour le cinéma au Québec pour l'année précédente seront projetés à la Cinémathèque Québécoise, Grande Bibliothèque et Cineplex Odéon Quartier Latin. En plus, il aura 94 en premières, 40 événements gratuits et (de nouveau cette année) Rendez-vous Pro (du 27 Février au 1 Mars) pour les professionnelles d’industrie. Également nouveau cette année – 3 nouveau volet de film: Soirées Bell Tapis Bleu, Rendez-vous avec les Jutra and Grandes Primeurs Documentaires.

For 11 days beginning with Yan Lanouette Turgeon ’s Rock Paper Scissors on February 21 (at Imperial Cinema) till March 03th 2013, more than 300 films, representing the ‘cream of the crop’ for Quebec Cinema for the prior year will be screened at the Cinémathèque Québécoise, Grande Bibliothèque and the Cineplex Odeon Quartier Latin. In addition, there will be 94 premieres, 25 free events and (new this year) Le Rendez-vous Pro (February 27 till Mar 01) for industry professionals. Also new this year – 3 new film series: Soirées Bell Tapis Bleu, Rendez-vous with the Jutras and Grandes Primeurs Documentaires.

Marc Roger est un « griot blanc ». Il voyage de ville en ville, en racontent des histoires. Il voyage généralement en marchant et en donnant des lectures publiques de sa collection de livres. Son dernier excursion a été de Saint-Malo en France (où ses parents sont morts) à Bamako, au Mali (où il est né). Le cinéaste le croise en Maroc et l'accompagne. Un film intéressant du point de vue de la culture Africain mais j'ai trouvé que le personnage principal d'être un peu ennuyeux.

Marc Roger is a ‘white griot.’ He travels from town to town reading stories. He usually travels by walking and giving public readings from his collection of books. He latest such excursion was from Saint-Malo in France (where his parents died) to Bamako, Mali (where he was born). Filmmaker meets up with him in Morocco and accompanies him. An interesting film from the standpoint of African culture but I found that the main protagonist to be somewhat boring.

Pierre (dans ses quarantaines) purge une peine de 15 ans pour un délit de fuite. Sa mère, qui a presque quatre-vingt, est le seul qui lui rend visite. Son ex-épouse Suzanne veut refaire sa vie. Chaque caractère raconte ce qui se passe actuellement. Tout cela est voix-off, dans le contexte des images éphémères qui visant à donner l'impression qu'ils sont figés dans le temps. Dans l'esprit de ce critique, le film est un échec à cet égard – j'ai vu peu ou pas de lien entre les images et le récit.

Pierre (in his 40s) is serving a 15-year-sentance for hit-and-run. His mother, who is approaching 80, is the only one who visits him. His ex-wife Suzanne wants to move on with her life. Each character is recounting what is currently happening. All of this is as voice-overs against the backdrop of ephemeral imagery which is intended to give the impression that they are frozen in time. In this reviewer’s mind, the film is a failure in this regard – I saw little or no connection between the imagery and the narrative.

Un documentaire de style difficiles- à-visionnée-appelle-réveillant qui examine les statistiques alarmantes des accidents mortels impliquant des jeunes de 16 à 24 ans sur les routes du Québec. 725 morts dans les cinq dernières années et, en surplus, 2623 ont survécu (malheureusement la plupart ayant des blessures graves qui pourrait potentiellement changer la vie. Les messages de service public concernant les dangers des excès de vitesse et de conduite avec facultés affaiblies ne s’enfonce pas ; jeunes sont accrochés sur le « frisson » et eux et leurs proches souffrent des conséquences souvent tragiques. Des stratégies plus strictes et sévères doivent être implémentées afin de protéger nos jeunes et d’autres d'eux-mêmes.

A difficult-to-watch-wake-up-call style documentary that examines the alarming statistics of fatal crashes on Quebec’s highways involving youth aged 16 to 24. In the past 5 years 725 have died and an additional 2623 have survived (unfortunately most had serious and potentially life-changing injuries. Public service messages regarding the dangers of speeding and impaired driving are not sinking in; youths are hooked on the ‘thrill’ and they and their loved ones are suffering the often tragic consequences. More stringent and severe strategies must be implemented in order to protect our youth and others from themselves.

Les habitants de Saint-Élie-de-Caxton souffrent. Le seul ' nourriture disponible est la misère (un bol d'eau chaude). Ésimésac n'a pas d'ombre mais a la force de déplacer les blocs lourds à travers la ville. Il convainc les habitants pour commencer un jardin communautaire. Seulement Riopel, le forgeron, refuse de rejoindre en disant que c'est une perte de temps. Dans un premier temps, il est en concurrence avec Ésimésac mais convainc finalement que le chemin de fer s'arrête à Saint-Élie-de-Caxton. Une fable moderne délicieusement magique et poétique d'espoir et esprit communautaire et l'unité malgré des conditions extrêmement pénibles.

The inhabitants of Saint-Élie-de-Caxton are suffering. The only ‘nourishment available is Misery (a bowl of hot water). Ésimésac has no shadow yet has the strength to move heavy boulders across town. He convinces the inhabitants to start a community garden. Only Riopel, the blacksmith, refuses to join in saying that it is a waste of time. At first he competes with Ésimésac but eventually convinces him that the railway will connect Saint-Élie-de-Caxton to the rest of the world. A delightfully magical and poetic modern day fable of hope and community spirit and unity despite extremely harsh conditions.

Griffintown (south-western district of Montreal), Canada’s oldest working-class neighbourhoods was once a bustling hub of the industrial era. Many of its warehouses and horse stables have closed and are being demolished to make room for condominiums. The Horse Palace was built in the 1850s and is presently owned by Leo Leonard. The stables are in dire need of restoration and Leo is in his mid 80s. He is under pressure to yield to sell it for urban redevelopment. A deeply nostalgic tribute to an era that will soon disappear unless something is done to preserve this rich cultural heritage.

Kees Vanderheyden was just a young boy when his homeland of Holland was occupied by Nazi Germany. Today, over 60 years later, he lives in Quebec and recounts his experiences to children in schools throughout the province. In this medium-length film, we see him doing so and we also are witness to the emotional reunion with an Austrian orphaned girl named Traudi. Traudi was taken in by his family and she became like a sister to him. It took Kees 8 years to find her.

Graduation from high school is one of the most life-changing chapters for young people – it is the time when one leaves childhood to become a young adult. It is a time when most must leave the comforts of home, family and friends in order to find their place in the larger world. Many face conflicting emotions as they anticipate adulthood with all of its joy and tragedies. Straddling the fine line between documentary and fiction, the filmmaker follows a group of graduates from the village of Dégelis, situated in Quebec near the border with New Brunswick.

La caméra prend un rôle allant bien au-delà d’un appareil d'enregistrement ; devenir un costume d'armure, comme elle confronte à une atrocité douloureuse infligée à elle quand elle était seulement de 4 ans. Tourné comme un documentaire, le film a eu très peu d'attention sur son problème majeur.

African-born Sophie (25) has lived in Quebec since she was 5. She lands a summer job with a travelling carnival. Just having completed a degree in documentary film, her boss requests that she makes a short promotional film. Agreeing to do so, she films everything her co-workers and herself do. The camera takes on a role going far beyond just a recording device; becoming an suit of armour as she confronts a painful atrocity inflicted upon her when she was only 4 years of age. Shot as a documentary, the film had very little focus on its major issue.

Designed with country/contemporary comfortable furniture and subtle décor, Estrimont’s floor to ceiling windows ensure guests benefit from Estrimont’s signature view: behold the glorious mountains of Mont Orford. They create a never-ending vista of majestic beauty that accompanies you - whether walking along one of the corridors, swimming in the pool or napping in your room.

Yet, rather than making you feel small, the range’s 853-meter height seem to empower and encourage you to do all the things you are aching to do to rediscover your inner self.

Each time I gazed out my room’s huge glass sliding-door and stepped onto the balcony of my room, to gaze at them, I felt a clear message coming from their ageless crests: “Time stands still here and we are protecting you”.

My room certainly gave me the feeling that tranquility was my own invisible guest who had just checked in with me. Ah, such peace, comfort and what space! It was the perfect spot for a couple with romance in mind or a single person like myself wanting to distress. All the rooms are suites, with sliding glass doors that look out to some lush part of the mountain. The vestibule of my room was as big as the one in the house I once owned. The bathroom was grand – loved those burnt orange big tiles, and the king size bed was faced with a huge kitchenette complete with microwave, dishes, a fridge and coffee machine.

There was a huge TV affixed to the wall, and two steps down from the bedroom was a mini living room another TV with a couch, chair, a Murphy bed, and a fireplace. I also was impressed by the built-in reading lights in the bedside lamps.

To fill the recipe of further relaxation and the right to beautify myself, I headed for Estrimont’s Amerispa that was only a few steps away from my room following a corridor.

I had the anti-wrinkle and firmness ritual facial – an ‘act’ in at least 8 steps. Using Valmont’s magical products from Switzerland, Nadine Bisaillon, my aesthetician applied mysterious creamy lotions and a phyto cream, and a collagen mask with her intermittent massaging technique. At the end of the hour, my skin was fuller and less grey in colour. It had been detoxified hydrated, reenergized and oxygenated. I actually felt I had been to a plastic surgeon; I looked younger. I was glowing. Take me to the ball!

The next day I treated myself to two outstanding treatments to create skin smoothness in the body and detoxify it. An all-over application of a warm gel mask of nutrients, vitamins and minerals was applied to my body as part of Amerispa’s signature Elixir Ice Cider Exfoliation body wrap. Wow! I have sandpaper legs; after that, my legs felt like honey without the stickiness. Then another hands-on gift was coming my way: a 90-minute massage took place under the expert hands of Caroline Collin who also did the body wrap. Every muscle, bone, sinew of every part of my body was tended to using her expert therapeutic techniques.

The Amerispa experience allowed me self-reflection and great relaxation. I loved the entire gentle experience, and the dipping into the Nordic hot spa outside with a view to snow-covered Orford, followed with a retreat into the yurt for further relaxation.

It’s time to talk about the gourmet meals I had at Estrimont, yet another reason one never has to leave the premises. Olivier-St Arnaud is the master chef, who is offering a day of 2-hour culinary workshops this summer.

You get to taste what you make, and under his guidance, was a thrill. I must single out his hors d’oeuvres, such as brie and prosciutto melted in a pastry roll, the turkey soup tinged with nutmeg, or his tender sweet salmon garnished with grenadine and served on yellow beets with fennel. His chicken mousse served in a little spoon was heavenly.

My five-course meal which seemed like the standard 8-course one he creates each evening was outrageously superb. Most remarkable was the risotto with wild mushroom, smoked Gouda and Parmesan cheese. The three-flavour dessert of maple ice cream in a square, raspberry sorbet and argusier berry mousse was awesome.

Breakfast was a la carte or buffet; Once again, it was an embarrassment of riches. I knew I had gained weight, so it was time to head for Orford Park to do some cross-country skiing – only a five-minute drive away from Estrimont.

It was recommended I walk the trails rather than ski them as parts were icy. I was fitted with crampons, and off I went with my guide Jean-Philippe Baribeau who knows the trails very well.

He took me on a 30-minute walk uphill to get a view of the enchanting Etang aux Cerises (Pond of Cherries). The walk up cocooned me in birch trees, evergreens and maples. The short ascension we climbed at the end was aptly called Colline des pins (Hill of Pines). The view was sweet indeed.

The next day, I took a longer walk trying to follow a path I had in mind, but the markings on the trail, the map itself and my navigation did not see eye to eye. Nevertheless, it was all stunning and quietly beautiful. I love this park and hope to go back when they get more snow to cross-country ski. The staff was really helpful.

That is, until he meets Julie – a human survivor.

This is an unconventional yet somewhat predictable slasher film centering on Mandy Lane. She is a dreamily gorgeous girl who is the object of desire of all the boys. They will do anything to get her attention (even kill the competition). Despite average acting, plot and editing the film is a joy to watch.

Il s'agit d'un film d’horreur non conventionnelles mais un peu prévisible, centré sur Mandy Lane. C'est une fille rêveusement magnifique qui est l'objet du désir de tous les garçons. Redpeter, a renowned and celebrated mercenary soldier employed by Graywater Corporation, speaks before an audience of its stockholders. His wife is in attendance. He recounts how in his desire to ‘escape’ and preserve his life he decided to ‘become’ human. He begins his narrative 10 years prior when he was captured by Graywater and transported from Africa to the United States on a ship. He describes how he was treated while caged in the ship’s cargo hold and how he learned by imitation the ways of humanity.

The dialogue was captivatingly incisive and Rosenstein’s performance was credible in every possible way. The make-up was superb and convincing – being so close to the stage – I could ‘smell’ his apeness. Montagnese’s character was too low-key that it literally distracted whenever she did something. I would have preferred that she would have been more disruptive as her husband spoke. Mrs Redpeter had not adapted to the ways of humanity. The logo used by Graywater was very telling and ironic – the statue of ‘Liberty’ holding a sword rather than a flame.

Redpeter, un soldat mercenaire renomme et célébré, employé par la société des Graywater, parle devant un auditoire de ses actionnaires. Son épouse est présente. Il raconte comment, dans son désir de « s'échapper » et de préserver sa vie, il décide de « devenir» humain. Il commence son récit 10 ans en avant quand il a été capturé par Graywater et transporté d'Afrique vers les États-Unis sur un navire. Il décrit comment il a été traité en cage dans la cale à cargaison du navire, et comment il a appris par imitation les façons de l'humanité.

Le dialogue a été séduit incisif et la performance de Rosenstein était crédible dans toutes les manières possibles. Le maquillage était superbe et convaincant – en étant si près de la scène – je pourrais 'sentir' son odeur de singe. Le caractère de Montagnese était trop discret qu'elle a littéralement distrait à chaque fois qu'elle faisait quelque chose. J'aurais préféré qu’elle aurait pu être plus perturbateur pendent que son mari parlait. Mme Redpeter n'avait pas adapté à la façon de l'humanité. Le logo utilisé par Graywater a été très révélateur et ironique – la statue de la « Liberty » tenant une épée plutôt qu’une flamme.

C'est le 31 Décembre 1799. Espérance et Pierre possèdent une ferme dans la vallée du Bas Saint-Laurent, isolés de leurs voisins. Ils ont 3 enfants – Mathurin, Madelon et un nouveau né. Pierre quitte pour réapprovisionnée, emmenant son fusil. Espérance l’avertit de faire attention qu'il n'est pas vu par les tuniques rouges.

Quelque temps plus tard, 2 tuniques rouges apparaissent à la ferme. Pensant qu'il est vide, ils entrent dans la cabane. Ils partent quand ils voient Espérance et ses enfants. Une tempête de neige commence. Les 2 retournes, accompagnées par trois autres. L'un des 2 a été blessé. Le capitaine demande Espérance pour l'aide, de nourriture et d'abri pour la nuit. Alors que la nuit s’avance, la neige continue à tomber, les tuniques rouges célèbrent – les tentations augmente, la tension monte et les soupçons sont éveillés, aboutissant à des actes inimaginables; tout ceci contre la cinématographie à couper le souffle de la paysage de la vallée du Bas Saint-Laurent du de Bertrand Calmeau.

Je m'attendais que ce film pourrait m'apprendre un peu sur l'occupation Britannique du Bas-Canada, mais au lieu de cela, j'ai senti qu'il soit un véhicule de la propagande pour le séparatisme au Québec, comme il déshumanisé les Britanniques, principalement en les identifiant avec ce qu'ils sont au lieu de leurs identité – Le Capitaine, Le Vulgaire, Le Laid, Le Blessé et Le Jeune. Aucun d'entre eux n'avaient aucun sens de l'humanité et étaient décrits comme brutal, vulgaire, ignorant etcetera. La fin du film a été très décevante.

It is December 31st 1799. Espérance and Pierre own a farm in the Lower Saint-Laurence valley, isolated from their neighbours. They have 3 children – Mathurin, Madelon and a new born. Pierre leaves to replenish their supplies, bringing his rifle. Espérance warns him to be careful that he is not seen by the Redcoats.

A short while later, 2 Redcoats show up at the farm. Thinking it to be empty, they enter the cabin. They leave when they see Espérance and her children. A blizzard commences. The 2 return accompanied with 3 others. One of the first 2 has been wounded. The captain asks Espérance for help, food and shelter for the night. As the night wears on, the snow continues to fall, the Redcoats celebrate – temptations mount, tensions rise and suspicions are aroused, culminating in unimaginable acts; all of this against the breathtaking cinematography of the Lower Saint-Laurence valley landscape by Bertrand Calmeau.

I expected that this film would teach me a little about the British occupation of Lower Canada, but instead I felt it to be a vehicle of propaganda for Quebec separatism as it dehumanized the British, mainly by identifying them with what they are instead of who they are – The Captain, The Vulgar, The Ugly, The Injured and the Boy. None of them had any sense of humanity and were portrayed as brutish, vulgar, ignorant etcetera. The ending of the film was very disappointing

The Beecham House is a retirement home for retired musicians. Among the current residents are life-long friends and colleagues Wilfred ‘Wilf’ Bond (Billy Connolly), Reginald ‘Reggie’ Paget (Tom Courtenay) and Cecily ‘Cissy’ Robson (Pauline Collins). They are all retired opera singers. The residents are rehearsing and preparing for the annual gala directed by Cedric Livingston (Michael Gambon), which honours the birthday of Giuseppe Verdi and to raise funds for Beecham.

It is a normally smooth running and pleasant event that evokes warm memories of long gone days. But this year there is a new arrival at Beecham. It is Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), the fourth and most famous of the Quartet that included Reggie, Wilf and Cissy. She also was married to Reggie. Her arrival upsets Reggie as the pain of her betrayal resurfaces. Initially he refuses to speak to her but eventually realises that life goes on and she will be staying at Beecham.

Cedric gets an idea for the gala – a reunion of the Quartet. Reggie, Wilf and Cissy are keen on the idea but Jean refuses. The idea of singing again scares her. Can the other 3 convince her to sing again even if it is just for the sheer pleasure of youth rekindled?

Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut is a delightful comedy that approaches aging with the same spirit as John Madden’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The cast of veteran actors shine, proving beyond a doubt, that aging does not entail the cessation of living as long as the ‘breath of life’ is within us.

La maison Beecham est un foyer de retraite pour les musiciens pensionnaire. Parmi les résidents actuels sont amis et collègues de longue date Wilfred « Wilf » Bond (Billy Connolly), Reginald « Reggie » Paget (Tom Courtenay) et Cecily «Cissy» Robson (Pauline Collins). Ils sont tous les chanteurs d'opéra à la retraite. Les résidents sont en répétitions et préparations pour le gala annuel réalisé par Cédric Livingston (Michael Gambon), qui rend hommage à l'anniversaire de Giuseppe Verdi et pour amasser des fonds pour Beecham.

Il s’agit d’un événement normalement de bon déroulement et agréable qui évoque des souvenirs chaleureux de journées disparus depuis longtemps. Mais cette année il y a une nouvelle arrivée chez Beecham. C'est Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), la quatrième et la plus célèbre du Quatuor qui incluait Reggie, Wilf et Cissy. Aussi, elle a été mariée à Reggie. Son arrivée bouleverse Reggie comme la douleur de sa trahison refait surface. Il refuse de lui parler mais finit par se rend compte que la vie continue et elle va rester à Beecham.

Cedric a une idée pour le gala – une réunion du Quatuor. Reggie, Wilf et Cissy enthousiaste a l'idée, mais Jean refuse. L'idée de chanter à nouveau lui fait peur. Peuvent que les 3 autres la convaincre de chanter à nouveau même si c'est juste pour le plaisir d’une jeunesse ravivée?

Ce premier long métrage de Dustin Hoffman est une comédie charmante qui se rapproche au vieillissement avec le même esprit que The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel de John Madden. Le casting d’acteurs vétérans brille, prouvant hors de tout doute que le vieillissement n'entraîne pas la cessation de la vie aussi longtemps que le « souffle de vie » est en nous.

The title of this sweeping cinematic adaptation chronicling one of the most intense manhunts of human history is military jargon for 'the dark of night'. It can also refer to 12:30 a.m. which was the moment when the Navy SEALS first set foot on the compound in Bilal Town Abbottabad Pakistan on May 2^nd 2011. The film recounts the decade long manhunt for Osama bin Laden that began after September 11 2001 and ended with the successful raid on the compound where he was hiding.

The challenges to bring this complex, multifaceted account to the big screen included condensing the events of 10 years into a feature length movie. They were successfully met. The result is a gripping tale that remains faithful to the facts and avoids the usual pro American propaganda found in many other similar accounts. The film does not withhold exposing the moments when the members of the team of CIA operatives crossed moral lines, as in using torture to determine the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden.

Le titre de cette adaptation hâtif cinématographique retraçant un des chasses à l'homme plus intenses de l'histoire humaine est jargon militaire pour « l'obscurité de la nuit ». Il peut également faire référence à 12 h 30 qui a été le moment quand les Navy SEALS ont mis les pieds pour la première fois sur l’enceinte dans la ville Bilal d’Abbottabad en Pakistan le 2 Mai 2011. Le film raconte la chasse à l'homme d'Oussama ben Laden d’une durée d’une décennie qui a commencé après le 11 Septembre 2001 et s'est terminée avec le raid réussi dans l'enceinte où il se cachait.

Les défis d'apporter ce compte complexe, aux multiples facettes au grand écran y compris de condenser les événements de 10 ans en un long métrage. Ils ont été atteints. Le résultat est un conte captivant qui reste fidèle aux faits de préhension et évite la propagande pro Américaine habituelle retrouver dans nombreux d’autres comptes semblables. Le film ne retient pas d’exposer les moments où les membres de l'équipe d'agents de la CIA traversé les lignes morales, comme utilisent le torture pour déterminer où se trouvait Oussama ben Laden.

On Tuesday evening January 15^th, pianist Alain Lefèvre performed the astonishing Concerto “l’Asile (Création Mondiale) with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under the baton of Ludovic Morlot. It was composed by Walter Boudreau. The unforgettable concert took place inside the gloriously new Maison Symphonique de Montréal.

Geniuses – mad geniuses – that is what this concert was about. It took Mr. Boudreau about three years to compose the work whose three movements embody the tortuous life of the late Claude Gavreau, a visionary who inspired the creation of Mr. Boudreau’s concerto. Collaborating intensively with Mr. Lefèvre on the superhuman endeavour, Mr. Boudreau knew that it would take one of the world’s greatest pianists - also a world-class composer - to achieve the final rendering and performance of his massively difficult masterpiece. He knew he wanted to create alongside Alain Lefèvre.

Mr. Boudreau wrote the work in four years “in and out” as a tribute to the avant-garde Quebec poet and author Claude Gauvreau (1925-1971). During his short life the poet experimented heavily with LSD, modified the French language turning into a new form of incomprehensible poetic communication. He never achieved the recognition or the support which he so wished for. This tragic figure may have ended his life, but his ideas lived on - championed by another mad genius, Mr. Boudreau who is very much alive; he is also the director and conductor of the SMCQ.

The twelve-tone composition he composed demanded the most prolific piano playing through the 45 minute-long work. Mr. Lefèvre’s herculean technique combined with his immeasurable passion was breathtaking. Hands crossing over hands, non-stop lightning speed cadenzas up and down the keys, octaves, and trills and syncopated lines whose first beats had to join up with the percussive section, then the flutes, sometimes the horns and strings. Nothing seemed or was written to magically connect together, and yet it all did, in a way that was more fantastic than one could believe possible. In fact, Mr.Boudreau explained that he created this work so that the piano – represented the poet Gauvreau who was off on its own trying to connect to the orchestra which more or less represented the indifference of society. Rhythmically unpredictable is the composition; both protagonists (piano and orchestra symbolizing Gauvreau and society respectively) seemed to embody the pain and punishment endured by Gauvreau himself. Orchestra and piano had a challenging task keeping up with the other. In fact, six minutes into the work, Maestro Morlot stopped it all, and started the performance again – having left out an entire page! Was it any wonder Mr. Lefèvre kept a handkerchief atop the piano.

I felt Mr.Lefèvre carried the lion’s share of élan for the entire performance. His extraordinary understanding of the concerto combined with his earth-shattering technique marvellously communicated the dramatic intensity in this exciting work.

I began to feel that he knew the night had to lie with him. At times, the percussion was a nano-second off the timing of the piano punctuating entrances and final notes, but it was explained to me, that orchestra and pianist had four hours of rehearsal to pull it all together.

As for the composition itself, the first movement burst into our ears like a tsunami. It rarely let up. The second movement resembled a slow macabre dance. There were heart-breaking moments of utter beauty in melody line but that did not last for long. A sudden interjection of horn would break it all and then the intentional chaos would once again commence. Prokofiev, Schoenberg and Rachmaninov rolled into one is what I could hear; Scriabin, Stravinsky and Liszt as well. Now take the hardest most prodigiously taxing bars to play in all these composers and know that such rigorous demands constitute the entire concerto. Rarely was Mr. Lefèvre allowed to rest. Like the tormented soul of Mr. Gauvreau himself, this great pianist – a world treasure - personified this poet’s genius. He did so with relentless passion and pianistic perfection. This trio of mad geniuses enthralled me!

This concert was recorded by Radio-Canada’s Espace Musique and will be broadcast coast to coast next January 22^nd at the “Soirees Classiques” hosted by Mario Paquet. Alain will present the Concerto de l’Asile again this Season with the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec and its conductor Fabien Gabel on May 29^th and 30^th. It will be recorded on a CD for the Anelekta Label.

Great French Paintings from the Clark

A stunning exhibition of 75 Impressionist masterpieces is lighting up four grand rooms inside the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as part of its world tour. The paintings have come from the Robert Sterling Clark collection – one of the rarest and finest collections of the genre in the world. “This selection focuses on the movement itself – its genesis, context and legacy – so we can illustrate its coherence,” said Nathalie Bondil, MMFA’s Director and Chief Curator who noted that “impressionism has become the best loved and most popular art movement of all time.”

There is so much to say about the incredible paintings we can see at this intimate treasure as it provides lasting visual memories. The collection first introduces us to the Barbizon School of Impressionists who initiated plein aire painting in the Fontainebleau forest whose main village was Barbizon.

Corot, Rousseau, Millet, Daumier, Boudin, Jongkind and Tryon took their ‘lighting cue’ from the paintings of Constable and Turner. I was struck by the stunning expanse of forest and water scenes. But Rousseau felt Millet’s peasants looked like actor dressed up to imitate these folk. In fact, what stands outs so wonderfully in text in the exhibition are the words said by Renoir as he casts comments that show his disdain for Parisian hypocrisy and pretension. As Impressionism caught on as a way to gain status, he made the comment that people are hanging investments on their walls, not paintings.

Like Corot and Manet, Renoir loved nature. He likened a tree to God – that for him a tree was far more than a combination of carbon elements. Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s ladies are so sensual, and real, we are not surprised when we read that Renoir felt only women makes this world tolerable.

As we move from painting to painting, our eyes feast on so many genius talents whose brush strokes are as varied as the robes, flowers and skies and waves that they painted. Pissarro with his pointealesque innovation and Seurat with his wet on wet techniques, and let us not leave out Degas whose dancers and horses garnered great praise from Renoir who felt he was the only painter who knew how to capture movement.

One of the great masterpieces hung near Bouguereau’s ‘Seated Nude’ and Tissot’s ‘Chrysanthemums’ were two gems by Boldini. The minute textured realism captured in the velvet robe and dress that his ladies wear as seen in ‘Young Woman Crocheting’ and ‘Crossing the Street’ are second to none in the exhibition.

No doubt about it, these 18^th and 19^th-century masters of lighting, texture, mood and magnificent nature - captured in a still life or a seascape full of boats bobbing on waves - are immortal. Who else can paint onions and apples and make us what to pick them up off the canvas, but Renoir? Who else can paint peonies so magnificently that we can smell them as we stare at disbelief at their realism and beauty but Renoir? Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Gérôme, Morisot and more timeless talents are in this inspiring exhibition that is a must-see!

Lo Imposible / The Impossible / L’Impossible por / by / par Juan Antonio Bayona

English-language disaster drama from Spain based on a family’s true to life experience during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that struck Thailand in the morning of December 26^th. Unlike most disaster dramas, which focus mainly on the effect on a multitude of characters, film focuses on 1 particular family (it is based on the real-life experiences of the Balon family from Spain but they are portrayed as British in the movie).

The Bennets – Maria, Henry and their 3 children Lucas, Thomas and Simon (played by Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin and Oakley Pendergast respectively) have just arrived at the Khao Lak tropical resort in Thailand for a Christmas vacation. They had reserved a suite on the third floor but as it was not available they got a first floor room with a view of the ocean.

On the morning of December 26^th, the ‘joys’ of the season came crashing down as a huge tsunami destroyed and swept away everything and everyone in its path. Maria and Lucas become separated from Henry, Thomas and Simon. Maria suffers a serious injury to her leg and Lucas desperately attempts to bring her to safety and help. They eventually end up at a Thai hospital with Maria hovering at death’s door.

Meanwhile, back at the resort, Henry faces a tough decision. Should he separate himself from his sons to search for their mother and older brother or stay with them? He decides to send them to safety and begins a desperate search to reunite with his wife.

The film superbly captures the devastation and mayhem of one of the worst natural disasters of our time focusing mainly on the emotional and personal. The chemistry between the 5 leads was credible and magnificent especially that of Tom Holland as Lucas.

Drame catastrophe de la langue Anglaise d'Espagne basé sur une vraie expérience de vie d’une famille pendant le tsunami de l'océan Indien qui a frappé la Thaïlande dans la matinée du 26 Décembre 2004. Contrairement à la plupart des drames catastrophe, qui se concentrent principalement sur les effets sur une multitude de personnages, ceci se concentre sur 1 famille particulière (il est basé sur les expériences de vie réelle de la famille Balon d'Espagne, mais ils sont dépeints comme Britannique dans le film).

Les Bennet – Maria, Henry et leurs trois enfants, Lucas, Thomas et Simon (joué par Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, Samuel Joslin et Oakley Pendergast, respectivement) est arrivés à la station tropicale Khao Lak en Thaïlande pour des vacances de Noël. Ils avaient réservé une suite au troisième étage, mais comme il n'était pas disponible ils ont obtenu une chambre au premier étage avec une vue sur l'océan.

Le matin du 26 Décembre, les «joies » de la saison se sont écroulées quand un énorme tsunami a détruit et emporté tout et tout le monde sur son passage. Maria et Lucas sont séparent de Henry, Thomas et Simon. Maria subit une blessure grave à la jambe et Lucas tente désespérément de l’amener a la sécurité et de l’aide. Ils finissent par se retrouver dans un hôpital Thaïlandais avec Maria planant au seuil de la mort.

Parallèlement à l’hôtel, Henry est confronté à un choix très difficile. Faut-il se séparer de ses fils à la recherche de leur mère et leur frère aîné ou rester avec eux? Il décide de les envoyer à la sécurité et commence une quête désespérée de retrouver sa femme.

Le film capte magnifiquement la dévastation et la destruction de l'une des pires catastrophes naturelles de notre temps en se concentrant principalement sur l'émotionnel et personnel. L'alchimie entre les 5 principales était crédible et magnifique surtout celui de Tom Holland dans le rôle de Lucas.

A Tango Feast of Music and Food

From February 21 to March 3 Montréal en Lumière is featuring over 100 top world-class artists and chefs with the accent on Argentina. 70 concerts will take place in 24 different venues.

One of the two honorary co-presidents drummer, Daniel Piazzolla, grandson of Astor (father of tango), will be performing with Escalandrum, his jazz/tango sextet on March 2^nd, inside the atmospheric L’Astral. Having collaborated with Gloria Estevan and Chick Corea, Danilo Perez and other greats, Mr. Piazaolla is sure to wow the crowds.

Lumière's other co-honourary president is the incomparable classical pianist/composer Alain Lefèvre. One can anticipate the non-stop clapping, whistling and “bravos’ coming from every corner of the acoustically-perfect Maison Symphonique de Montreal during a concert of his melodic masterpieces on February 23^rd. A multi-award winner, Mr. Lefèvre will make musical history in the city with a performance of original pieces from two of his albums, ‘Fidèles Insomnies’ (Blissfully Sleepless) and ‘Jardin d ’Images’. His compositions have mesmerized critics and classical piano lovers around the world. An inspirational genius, he received a ten-minute standing ovation from a crowd of 4000 when Lumière first lit up the stages of Montreal.14 years ago.

Stand-out concerts include a spectacular evening of ‘West Side Story’ Percussion and vocalists will bring to life the tragic love stories in an innovative manner. Argentine dance companies will wow with their wizard choreography. Opera soloists, include counter tenor Daniel Taylor in an all-Bach cantata program, and the scintillating soprano Marie-Josée Lord. Her hypnotic voice is inspiring and unique.

Also appearing are Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Daniel Lavoie to the Zombies and the acapella, beatbox boys of Voca people, plus a line-up of many local stars provide appeal to suit diverse tastes.
Tango addicts won’t want to miss the shows of La Pista Tango and La Pista Cabaret.

A symphony of salacious gourmet dishes further heightens the senses. Nineteen chefs from Argentina, seven from Philadelphia and four from Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean along with two Argentinean wine producers will be cooking up a storm and pouring out vintage wines in 40 kitchens of Montreal as guest chefs pair up with local chefs. Argentinean chef, Gonzalo Aramburu will be serving a ten-course meal using the freshest of Argentinean products in his gourmet molecular dishes. Master chef, Francis Mallman who is also the festival’s honorary president will offer his seven-course meal that includes white fish cooked with salsa criolla and lamb confit with guajchalocro from Jujuy.

Exceptional wines both from Cheval des Andes winery the Terrassas de los Andes will compliment each segment of the feast. This takes place at Europea Restaurant (1227 rue de la Montagne).

Europea will also offer a five-course meal created by Hernan Griccini, renown for his Relais & Châteaux restaurant Chez Nous in Buenos Aires.

A social drama that explores American values towards environmental safety versus personal financial gain versus corporate profit. 2 sales representatives of a large natural gas corporation have been dispatched to a small rural town that is now impoverished due to economic decline.
Steve Butler (Matt Damon) grew up on a farm in Iowa. The town died when the local plant owned by a major company closed. He strongly believed that he would be doing the residents of the town of McKinley Pennsylvania an enormous favour and providing them with much needed relief by offering them substantial financial rewards for the right to drill on their property (the going rate was 2 thousand dollars per acre). For Steve and his partner, Sue Thomason (Frances McDormand), it seemed like it would be a done deal – everyone signs and both can return to their families.
That is, until complications arise when at a town meeting, respected school teacher Frank Yates (Hal Holbrooke) questions the safety on the practice of 'fracking.' He demands that the proposal be voted upon. The matter is further complicated when Steve meets Alice (Rosemary De Witt) and the arrival of an ‘environmental activist’ Dustin Noble (John Krasinski).
A powerful film that superbly explores the sensitive nature of many elements extant in contemporary human societies and how one must think things through before accepting any proposal that may look good on the surface. It also shows that many of us are employed in fields that, while bringing prosperity to the community may actually be destroying it.

Cela montre aussi que beaucoup d'entre nous sont employés dans des domaines qui, tout en apportant de la prospérité pour la communauté, peuvent être détruisant.
