Saturday, 9 June 2012 marks the debut of Sub-Sonic Live and many firsts for Fred Perry Subculture’s music initiative. Apart from moving the event outdoors to an abandoned basketball court aptly titled The Court @ 1 Kay Siang Road, the performance stage is set to electrify with a 5 metre-high and 10 metre-wide visual performance by pixel kingpin, Brandon Tay of Syndicate. Hynoptic, kaleidoscopic, this visual addition to the Sub-Sonic Live stage will be an epic first. Sub-Sonic Live assembles some of Singapore’s brightest music stars featuring highly anticipated comeback performance by shoegazers Astreal, hazy acoustic progressive sounds by MONSTER CAT, and folksy blues-rock crooners The Sets Band, feel-good fuzz pop duo Ruffians featuring Ginette (Home Club) and Aida (Poptart), Trouse Brothers and Richard Bedford (UK) at Zouk, the official after party venue. 9 June, 7pm – 11pm. Venue: The Court, 1 Kay Siang Road. Register for guest list here.

23-year-old designer/illustrator, Jane Chang Mei Qi recently completed her BFA in Visual Communication at the School of Art, Design and Media, NTU.

In her graduation project titled “Politikally”, Jane explores the impact of graphic design on political campaigning, focusing on visual communication with the youth in Singapore. The project, inspired by theories of political philosopher Thomas Hobbes, examines political marketing, emotional branding and design of national identity.

“Through extensive case studies, research, and the survey of local youth, a specifically tailored graphic design system has been constructed. Based on Hobbes’ formula, the project splits into three components — Body (sensations), Man (how man relates to man) and State (designing for society). One of the focus points of my project was to find out what design elements visually communicate with the target group of the Singaporean youth, in the context of local politics, a topic yet to be extensively explored. Through data collection and extensive research, a visual system of communication was created, emphasizing the importance of good graphic design as a powerful tool of communication in political activism, which advocates change.”

Jane strikes a balance between being a perfectionist and having fun experimenting. She is constantly looking for inspiration in every aspect of her life and has a life-long obsession with making things look prettier.

“The ComShell is about the possibilities of creating and witnessing a new integrated sustainable living, working and recreational infrastructure using existing technology for displaced people in a natural disaster situation. It intrigues my senses to dream up an ‘ENABLER’ fulfilling their essential needs in times of instability in this modern urban environment. In times of emergency -especially after a natural disaster- fast quality deployment of shelter, food, water, medicine and communication devices are essential for survival. Most emergency shelters -especially in the modern urban environment- are built using an unsustainable model depending solely on foreign aids, with little or no initiative from the locals to self-help. The shelters are designed to meet the immediate needs, locality, geographical, building and material conditions of the affected area. Most of these shelters become obsolete or permanent dwellings after a time. Conflicts and crimes against the old, sick and weak are also a common problem due to the crowded living arrangements in this current arrangement. Hence a livable self- sustainable, recyclable shelter, housing 10 to 16 people for six months to two years (or longer) would be an ideal intermediate solution.”

What the Singapore Arts Festival 2012 promises to do from 18 May to 2 June. Are you ready?

The Singapore Arts Festival opens tomorrow! Yesterday we got a preview of the Festival Village situated at Esplanade Park which will be home to 300 free performances from 18 May to 2 June. Despite not being officially opened, the village was already a bustling hive of activity. There were horses trotting about, performers (both kids and adults) going through rehearsals, crew testing lighting, sound and projection and F&B staff setting up the food booths, Festival cafe and bar. The area is coming alive and it’s going to get even busier once things kick off on Friday. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s in-store for you in the coming weeks. Photos after the jump.

One of the gorgeous horses of Flux stretching its legs at the main stage before the performance.

The 12 contenders making a bid to topple the Merlion as Singapore’s reigning icon as part of XII – In Search of 13. Yep, we wonder how Geylang is going to be portrayed too.

This silver-clad dude is the Merlion and he needs your vote to decide on who he takes on in the ring. Our bets are on Kumar crushing him with his stiletto.

From the Festival Cafe to the Black Box Theatre, all the structures in the Festival Village were built using shipping containers.

The journos get a taste of Tangle. Can’t wait to see the delightfully messy conclusion at the end of the festival.

Turning to the bay, we’re surprised by a moving projection of a “centaur”. It’s the start of Flux.

The two performers move as one with their beautiful horses during the performance, it’s really quite mesmerizing and we just might watch this every night.

The awesome Bridge Cafe Project gentlemen who served us Cold Stone Creamery ice creams and Tully’s coffee while dancing exuberantly to Queen’s We Are the Champions and Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) in the Festival Cafe! Don’t miss them.

Audrie Leong was raised by the Internet. After graduating from Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Digital Media Design in 2008, she spent two years in Melbourne, alternately basking in the freedom of an Arts education and being crushed under the weight of essay research and deadlines.

In other words, Audrie hasn’t had much formal training as an artist. She has an unnatural fondness for parentheses, comedy that’s slightly off-centre, and, like most other people who want to give the appearance of quirkiness and independence, cats. Her hobbies include doodling on paper with naught but a pigment ink pen, devouring books, and indulging in other forms of living vicariously through fictional characters.

Audrie is currently working full time, although she dreams of eventually being able to earn a living from experimenting with everything she is passionate about, and also harbours a not-so-secret desire to become involved in unusual and meaningful projects.

Photography started off as a curious experiment for designer Zinkie Aw, but it has since evolved into a mainstay that helps define who she is.

Camera in hand, the 26-year-old packs more courage than she normally would in her approach to life. The camera is her best excuse to dwell deeper and relate to the world a little more.

“I like to document social trends (and changes). Underlying themes of her works include modernisation and abandonment, changing ways of lives of people in Singapore, and issues of mobile technology. My photo series work to critique upon a society’s change in this modernised world. Thus not only is photography a way for me to spend time with myself, but through my observations of life via photography, I hope to help people log a visual diary of their lives and culture.”

Cat-lovers like Zinkie often say: Curiosity killed the cat. Zinkie believes, passion brought it back.

When we fall into an overly structured, predictable and unchangeable system, we create artificial playgrounds to keep ourselves entertained. Much like installing a luxurious home-entertainment theatre with a huge velvet upholstered sofa inside a 1-room HDB flat. How do we make sense of things when there is constant displacement of logic and information? How much absurdity needs to be introduced to upset the social norm? a LIFE performance deconstructs snippets of life encounters in an artificially constructed world. Choreographer and performer Joavien Ng mischievously attempts to disrupt and alter the constructions of meanings, creating bodies that move between recognisable familiarity and disconnected awkwardness. Gradually, the performance morphs into an incoherent soup of landscapes and meanings, teasing audiences into disorientation. 10 – 12 May, 8pm Esplanade Theatre Studio.
