2010 Kingsport Spring Class - Hermeneutics

We are planning to hold our first meeting for the new Kingsport classes on Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 8:00 am to 10:30 am at Bancroft Bible Camp, 141 Bancroft Private Drive, Kingsport, Tennessee.

The classes will be more intensive than our monthly format. Each week will cover two of the twelve sessions. Classes will meet weekly on Saturdays from 8:00 am to 10:30 am for 6 weeks (no class on May 8), ending June 5. This spring's class will be hermeneutics (inductive Bible study). The textbook will be Getting the Message by Daniel M. Doriani.

We hope to offer the preaching class in a similar format this fall.

If you are interested in these classes, please let us know as soon as possible -- let us know if you need a textbook as well. We have a limited number available at a highly discounted price.

Quick Guide to Sermon Preparation

Dr. Hershael York, pastor of Buck Run Baptist Church in Frankfort and preaching professor at Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, presented a helpful one-session workshop on sermon preparation in the midst of the 2007 Power in the Pulpit Conference. Below are the basic steps Dr. York takes the audience through. This is a good refresher for experienced preachers and a good basic training session for those starting out. I hope you find it useful.

"Sermon Preparation Checklist" by Dr. Hershael W. York, 2007 Power in the Pulpit Conference

1) Read the text

2) Determine the parameters of the "preaching unit"

3) Trace the Argument/Narrative in the Text in a descriptive outline

4) Identify the Main Theme

5) Move from main theme to proposition

Note: The proposition must be applicational and NOT merely descriptive. In other words, what should the listener DO as a result of the truth revealed in the text?

6) Restate the points of the argument/narrative in applicational form

7) Fill in explanatory subpoints that arise from the text

8) Add appropriate SHARP ingredients (stories, humor, analogies, references, and pictures)

9) Write out transitional sentences

10) Develop the introduction that accomplishes 6 things:

Establish a rapport
Introduce the subject
Create interest
Set up and read the text
State the proposition
Transition into the body of the sermon

11) Develop the conclusion

2010 Southeast Kentucky Classes

Our next session of CAPS Phase 1 near Blackey, Kentucky, will begin on Monday, April 26th, from 6:30-9:30 PM in The Shepherd Center of Calvary Campus. This first class will be on the 4th Monday of the month, but after that we will revert back to the 3rd Monday of each month. Seven Ways to Keep in Touch with CAPS

If you would like to stay informed about what's going on with the CAPS ministry - whether you are a graduate, prospective student, or someone who wants to pray for us - there are several ways to keep up with what is going on. Please note, this list of options for CAPS news is not meant to inundate you. It is also not meant to encourage you to take advantage of all of them. It is certainly not intended to encourage you to sign up for particular services, especially if you have good reason to believe they would hinder a profitable use of your time. These are given for your convenience. You can take advantage of any and all you desire, although I mainly recommend #'s 2 & 3 as the most efficient ways to keep up (along with #4 if you already have Facebook, or #5 if you already have Twitter):

1. View the CAPS website. The website has undergone a number of updates and improvements, including a dedicated page for helpful online study tools, a page displaying the upcoming calendar events and latest news right at the top of the page, and a page for resources for pulpit supply (including clothing tips and questions to ask a church when answering a speaking request). You can also access selected sermon and lecture audio/video, as well as CAPS promotional materials such as the brochure and 5 minute video. URL: http://capsministry.com (Note: a mobile web friendly version of the site for cell phones is in development; news will be posted to all the options listed here when that is available.)

2. View and/or Subscribe to the CAPS blog. The CAPS blog will feature the latest CAPS news (a feed from the blog can be placed on a website, which is what you see at the top right of the CAPS blog right now.) Information about classes, updates to the website, and helpful online resources are featured on the CAPS blog. You can subscribe in a blog reader, such as Google Reader (there are other blog readers that make it easy to view updates, but see #3 below for more info on a Google account, like Google Reader), OR you can subscribe via email and have each update delivered straight to your email address, never needing to visit the site directly unless there is something you are looking for. (*Personally, I recommend an email subscription to the blog as the most efficient and best single way to keep up with what's going on. This way, you don't have to check a particular site with any regularity to stay informed, as it is sent straight to your email.) 3. View and/or Subscribe to the CAPS Calendar. You can see when and where classes are meeting and CAPS guys are speaking (in many cases you also have an option to click on a map, where you can get directions). You can take advantage of options setting notifications such as automatic Text message/Email reminders of particular events - especially helpful if you are a student, since you can set notifications for the class you are part of (requires a Google account, which is free). Please click here to sign up for a free Google account (you can also set up Gmail, a free email account that can be set to forward messages to the one you currently use - or you can use it as a primary account and access by web or download messages to your computer). 4. Join the CAPS Facebook group - If you have a Facebook account, this gives you a status update when something new is posted on the page. It also enables you to receive messages that are sent to all members of the Facebook group and confirm RSVPs to CAPS events. The Facebook group content is similar to the blog, except it will occasionally have links to some "extras" that do not make it on the blog (links to these "extras" may eventually show up on the website under study tools or other resources) and allows for a little more informal interaction with each other. You can post on the "wall," etc. (You can also simply view the page even if you do not have a Facebook account; you must have your own Facebook account to "join" the CAPS Facebook group and receive messages directly from it.) 5. Follow CAPS on Twitter. - Twitter gives brief (max of 140 characters) updates about CAPS. This will primarily include news similar to the blog although it may occasionally include an "extra" link. Requires a Twitter account (free). URL: http://twitter.com/capsministry

6. You can subscribe to our Vimeo channel if you would like to be informed when new CAPS videos become available (short videos as well as instructional videos and sermons).
