"Come on Chief, smile !!"
That look from 9 mth old Chief tells me I'm lucky to take even one photograph of him !

Chief is just one dog who has stayed with me since the New Year, either for boarding or residential training. Nearly all can be seen on my Cumbria Dog Training Facebook page, and with a husband who is more than cabaple

Peanut enjoys the fells.

Meet Nala, a beautiful Portuguese Water Dog, who, at 7 mths old is still displaying alot of puppy traits. She's staying for a 24 hr try out and has fitted in really well.

I'm pleased to be able to say that Peanut is staying with me again.
This young Cocker is such a lovely girl who makes herself right at home and gets on so well with everyone, both people and dogs.

And finally, time for my own girls !

What is it about Cockers ?

A portrait shot of Paul's lovely little Working Cocker Spaniel Ella, who adores him !

Ella

This is one for the scrap book - Elvis in quiet contemplation !
Paul has been training this 9 month old live wire Working Cocker Spaniel for the past 3 months and is enjoying every minute of it.
And it's easy to see why !

Elvis

8 year old Millie came to stay with me for a 24 hour "try out" prior to a longer board.
Judging from her expression, this lovely Westie has made herself right at home - which is exactly what I want !

Millie

Kes, a beautiful dog who's darkly photogenic.

A simple photograph Paul captured a few evenings ago, very close to home.
He'd been out with his own dogs who were back in the truck - as seen on the left of the photo.

Elvis

For the past two months, Paul has been working with Elvis, a really wonderful 8 month old Working Cocker Spaniel.
He's mentioned how much he's enjoying training this youngster and that Elvis is picking things up quickly, though having seen this photograph, I'm not exactly sure what he means !

Ralph and Inka

"I hope you're not intimidated by me looking up your nose", says Ralph to Inka.

Boom !!

Not many dogs about here and for good reason. Even seasoned gundogs would have shuddered at the boom of some of the explosions - though for us humans they were spectacular !

Finn

A bad hair day is a bad hair day - even for Finn, a Bedlington x Whippet.

Peanut

Peanut is a beautiful looking Cocker with the softest eyes and eyebrows to match.

Jura

Jura has a great expression. She stayed with me on a 24 hour "try out", which I ask all potential dogs to have before boarding. This allows me to see how well they settle in to a new environment and with other dogs. The last thing I want is a poor animal who is stressed. Thankfully, this only happens once in a blue moon.

How wonderful to see a dog express his enjoyment at being in water as much as Bear does. This youngster loved our muddy ditch and ran up and down constantly.
But then came the washing and drying of Bear and the question "why did I allow him to do that ?!"

Bear

.............and then there was Murray !

Murray

Heidi, a recent residential training youngster, loved to let off steam by jumping through the air for a tuft of grass. This Munsterlander was quite a sight, as her long legs allowed her to get quite a leap.

Few things are nicer than a beautiful summer's walk being finished off by a cooling swim in a beck, hidden from all and known by only a few.
Paul's dog Sumo is in his element here, with the joy of jumping in, then swimming to retrieve a tennis ball.

Sumo leaps for he's worth.

Bert has figured out how to leave the far bank to cross the beck but unfortunately for him, he's sitting on the last rock. Next step will be into the water.....not a thing he particularly enjoys.

Bert

A beautiful image captures a beautiful dog - Lewis, a Black Labrador.

Lewis

Chester is a regular boarding dog and his owners asked Paul to take a series of photographs of him while he stayed with us. Here is just one of them.

What can I say ?
This is me having alot of fun - especially with Milo, a Pug X Shih Tzu.

Cool Dogs

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Sat, 18 May 2019 13:37:00 +0000

I'm lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful rural areas of the UK. And if that wasn't enough, it's a quiet area too, free in the main from tourists and visitors.
Why is this important ?
Because it means there are lots of "secret" places that, despite their beauty, nobody knows about. This allows myself or Rachel to exercise the dogs in complete solitude !
One such place is a beck deep enough to swim in (I know), and a fantastic place to take the dogs on hot days.
It's a strangely satisfying feeling seeing the dogs swimming around, cooling off and looking totally happy and content. And I guess no dogs exemplify this more than Bert and Charlie, Rachel's own two dogs

The whirlwind is back AKA Peggy !
This photograph sums her up - she seems to fly around, not stopping for breath, just an absolute bundle of energy. But what a cracking little Cocker Spaniel she is.

Bear chasing Bryher became a feature when these two recently stayed. These two loved playing together and when the big lad had had enough, Bryher hadn't - and would egg him on more !

Vicky is cute - not a word I would normally use but I'll make an exception for her.
And I think it's quite obvious why !

George is a Vizsla who stayed with me recently for home boarding.
Paul - with his photography eye - was immediately attracted to the youngster, and before he knew what he was doing, George was sitting by our glass door listening to the click of a camera.

Meet a four legged Ferrari and Lamborghini.
Jasper is an incredibly fast little Working Cocker Spaniel, while just behind him is liver coloured Bryher. Both characters are wonderful dogs and great fun to have around.

Meanwhile, at just 4 months of age, Czech Shepherd Kimba is already displaying her natural serious expression.

Springer Spaniels can be alot of fun, and this is well demonstrated with Finch, a 9 month old dog who is finally photographed sitting down !
Finch is a lovely lad who's wants to explore anything and everything - so why would he want to sit down ??

And this is part of my office - taking time out between lessons to give my own girls some exercise.

Winter Sun

Winter sun cheers everyone up - including Mick, Ella and Sumo. This photograph is a great example of how these three happy dogs are.

Pixie absolutely loves it .... not that you could tell.

"Bear" the Leonberger stayed with me for two months of residential training. This big dog was a real handful to begin with and the thought of being off a lead was a distant dream. Nevertheless, persistent training paid off - although the sight of him "charging" kept me alert !

Training a dog

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Wed, 19 Dec 2018 11:10:00 +0000

The training of an adult dog can be very rewarding. It's different to that of a puppy, as it will already be living its life based around certain parameters - usually not very good ones ! Having to gradually change those to a set of positive ones takes time, dedication and alot of patience.

And so as I sit here I can honestly say we have turned things around on another dog. Wilf, a lovely Working Cocker Spaniel, arrived somewhat misguided. But it quickly became evident this youngster didn't have a bad bone in his body - just highly charged and with no manners or commands.

Rachel has worked frequently with him and it's all starting to pay off - no more long line and no more lead. Well done Rachel - and well done Wilf !

Wilf

Meet Coco, one of my boarding guests.

Coco is a young Spoodle (Springer x Poodle) and is exactly as the photographs imply - war, friendly and alot of fun.

Megan is a young, innocent looking Black Labrador who's been boarding with me. She really is a joy to have around and settles in really well with the other dogs.

Bear is an 11 month old Leonberger, staying with me for residential training.
On arrival, Bear thought it was great fun to jump onto his hind legs and put his front feet on my shoulders ! At 5-ft 3 - on a good day - this was something I didn't completely agree with and felt lesson one should concentrate on this. I'm pleased to say that we're now onto lesson 2 !!

Paul's frequently photographed young Working Cocker Spaniel Ella is now 10 months old and one of the most loving and loyal dogs I've known. If she's not laying near his feet she's discretely trying to get onto his lap - and usually winning !

Ella

When Rosa arrived 10 weeks ago, the last thing we would have done is allowed her complete freedom - and on a Fell !!
But what a difference structured training has made to this youngster. Rachel has helped in turning this beautiful Yellow Labrador into a dog who's a real joy to have around, and in truth who we are going to miss when she returns home shortly.

Rosa

The 25 obstacles spread over 10km of Shap Fells was a challenge like no other.
The Total Warrior course was fantastic fun !
In doing so I raised over £1500 of money for the charity NASS, who deals with the medical condition Ankylosing Spondylitis, which my husband suffers from.

And if you're going to pair up with anyone, who better than a Royal Marine Commando who just so happens to be my son.
Needless to say, Harry's adage is "pain is your friend" !

Fun in the mud

Recently we had a ditch dug along the length of our field. Little did we know that such a simple task could provide so much fun for one little dog !
Paul's lad Sumo looks decidedly unimpressed at having been told to stop digging - and forcing the soil back into the ditch!

Sumo

One year old Alfie is a lovely dog to have around the house. He gets on with every other dog and is just a very loving, gentle little character.
He also happens to be very photogenic.

14 week old Etta is a Flat Coat Retriever who I recently had staying with me. I took a shine to this big pup, who is full of energy and a willingness to learn.

Eight month old Ella is part dog / part otter. This is her usual style for getting into water - providing it's deep enough. On this occasion there was a purpose, with a yellow ball bobbing on top. Only trouble is, despite her eyes being on the subject, the final pic shows that she rather overshot the mark !

Whoops - overshot the ball completely !

With the generous help and time afforded by a local farmer, our field has been cut. 95 bales later, it is now clear and once more being used to help with training.

97 bales of good quality hay from our field

It's in the eyes !
Paul's lovely lad Sumo has been caught where he shouldn't really be and doing something he shouldn't really be doing !
Is that his bed ? I'll leave you to decide, but on the second pic .......

...... Sumo has been exploring the newly dug ditch - until he was told to stop, as he was slowly filling it in again !

Don't worry Sumo -- we love you really !!

The expressions that Meg and Bess show sums them up. They are very alert and full of fun. Without doubt, great to have around !

Fran Ardley the Gun Dog Trainer

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Thu, 24 May 2018 08:02:00 +0000

While Rachel is a trainer and partner in Cumbria Dog Training, my other daughter is a professional in gun dog trainer.
Fran has been training dogs for owners from all over the UK, as well as being asked to judge dogs in in the very male world of trialling. Not bad for a young lady still in her 20's !

Paul's six month old Working Cocker Spaniel Ella loves riding in the cars. She has tremendous spring in her skinny legs and gets into the back of the Hilux with little effort. It's a different story when it's time to leave. She's been trained never to jump out but to be patient and wait for her owner to pick her up, thereby preventing injuries ..... and vets bills !!

When are we going to be there Dad ?

Boarding dogs Charlie and his brother Alfie are staying with me for a few days, and as can be seen, a ball is something that creates a real bond.
These two young dogs are lovely characters.

Is this the cool way to carry a ball ?

Scarlett, a young Cavapoo, stayed with me recently. Initially a little nervous, she was introduced to calm dogs who accepted her immediately. That gave her confidence and we soon saw a different dog. Well done Scarlett !

Scarlett

It's Snowing !!!!!!!

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Sun, 04 Mar 2018 18:59:00 +0000

Mick likes snow. And Mick also likes running.

So when the opportunity presents itself, I doubt you'll see a happier dog anywhere !

One happy little character 2 yr old Mick

A momentary break for Sumo and Mick.

Okay .... not everyone likes the cold winds from the East, and snow blowing over their heads. Honey chooses to stay warm in her bed ..... until late April !

"Wake me up when it's warm again - outside !"

14 week old Ella loves the white stuff and is determined not to be left behind.....

........ even if that means running after Sumo looking more like a Polar Bear than a black puppy !

Bella is all eyes for a snowball - although it appears her mouth isn't as big as she thought it was !

"Does anyone know who the Pack Leader is ??"

"Smile - and don't drop the ball !"

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Mon, 15 Jan 2018 18:57:00 +0000

This is a picture of Paul's Working Cocker Spaniel named Sumo, holding a training aid - in this case a rabbit ball.
It was interesting to see how Sumo's behaviour - as a full male - changed once Paul took on another full male dog. Having been a very calm character, he slowly started to guard his owner, with the inevitable "handbag fight".

Finally (!), Paul made the decision to have him neutered.

And as he proudly tells me, he has his "old Sumo back".

Sumo

Meanwhile the pups have all gone to new homes. It's a quieter place without them but I miss that little something only a puppy can provide. I'm not quite sure what it is - maybe the softness of the coat, their inquisitive attitude and a desire to investigate places they should go to !

Nevertheless, these three photographs are some of the last I took.

The One Day Old Puppy

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Sun, 19 Nov 2017 09:22:00 +0000

An unnamed one day old puppy lays safe and secure by her mother. Minnie gave birth to four healthy Working Cocker puppies, all of whom have homes to go to.
Over the next few weeks we have the joy of watching their development, starting with them opening their eyes. These coming weeks are truly wonderful and a real joy to watch.

Minnie and pup sleep soundly.

Meanwhile Joss, a 10 week old Working Cocker Spaniel demonstrates just how natural he finds carrying shot game to be ! This photograph was taken over a week ago and it was very reassuring to see that this little lad has a one aspect of his training sorted out already !

Joss with his pigeon

And a tennis ball is always a collectable item !

Sisters

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Fri, 15 Sep 2017 16:51:00 +0000

Eighteen month old sisters Evie and Ziggie are very photogenic. Neither of these small Working Cocker Spaniels think twice about running through deep muddy water or into thick brambles if it means retrieving shot game.
But when the day is over and they've been washed, dried and fed, there's nothing more comfortable than the high chair to share.

" Can we try that butter trick ?? "

Meanwhile brother Mick really is the clown. If ever a dog could smile than this one can. A quick nip on his nose from another dog when he was only a few weeks old initially made him made him cautious of his own kind and he lacked a certain amount of confidence. But careful introduction by his owner to the "right" dogs at an early age meant that Mick was soon running about with the other dogs and enjoying every moment of it too. While the running has got faster, it now includes pieces of tree and a smile !

Happiness is ....

What is Sumo looking at ? I'll never know !

Sumo

Charlie looks right down his nose at the camera, suffering while the photographer achieves the "right" shot. Poor lad.

8mth old Hanna is one of my training clients.

She has a lovely temperament and as someone who's owned Rottweilers/Dobermans in the past, I found her to be representative of the breed.
It saddens me that such beautiful dogs can get such bad publicity, largely due to a few thoughtless owners.

Hanna

Recently Rufus stayed with me for two months residential training.

His stubbornness showed itself early on when he point blank refused to sit !

But over time he respected and obeyed the commands which Rachel and myself were using and we were both delighted to hand over such a well behaved and calmer dog to his owner.

Mick, a one year old Working Cocker Spaniel, assumes the position on our old high chair !
He shows great promise for his role as a gun dog, with an enthusiasm and determination for entering any type of cover in search for his training aids. Trained to the whistle, Mick is a very steady, sitting until told to do otherwise, irrespective of the distractions.
But as his face shows, he also has a mischievous side to him !

Mick

Betty the German Shepherd came in recently for residential training. In truth this was much needed. With no eye contact, she would pull forcefully when out on a lead, and have no interest in anything other than the bleat of lambs in surrounding fields !
Six weeks later and things have certainly changed. All those faults have been resolved and she is now a much calmer girl, listening to commands and actually carrying them out. The following two weeks will be spent sharpening her up, which now we've come so far, I don't think will be too difficult.

Betty

Life's High Flyers

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Sat, 25 Mar 2017 09:06:00 +0000

Ziggy is one of life's high flyers - in every way.
Fran's one year old Working Cocker Spaniel - who she bred herself - is showing all the signs of being not only a very good gundog but of having the potential to be a trialling dog.

Ziggy

If ever a photograph summed up Honey, this one does.
This bright eyed little Chihuahua likes nothing more than to lay on something soft, be it a bed or a cushion. The only proviso ? It needs to be in a warm spot, preferably next to an Aga !

Honey

Luna went home recently, having stayed with us for two months of residential training. After one or two early set backs, progress was fast and she proved herself a quick learner, remembering what she'd been taught.
These two photographs really do represent this lovely dog and the loyalty she showed us.

Loyal Luna

Luna

If you want a real character around the house, look no further than Louis, an 11 mth old Shih Tzu. When he first boarded with me a few months ago he was a little nervous, but of course he couldn't stay that way with Cocker Spaniels wanting to play with him - something had to change. And so we now have a very confident little dog who really is great fun.

Smiling Louis

Pippa is a young Black Labrador who's been staying with me for residential training over the past few weeks. I like this photograph, simply because now she can be trusted to recall, meaning that given the right circumstances, she's off lead altogether.

If you don't think dogs show emotion, think again. Ten month old Cocker Mick is just too fast for Charlie, and the happiness he feels is expressed across his face in a smile !
Both are enjoying the frost and winter sunshine - something we could only have dreamt about a year ago, as we recovered from Storm Desmond.

Mick - one happy little dog

While one dog is racing at speed and staying on all four feet, another loses balance altogether and rolls down the hill - though never loses grip of the dummy he was sent out to retrieve. This is Sumo, Paul's beautiful little 'Working Cocker Spaniel.

"Use your feet Sumo !"

Time out for me and my dog Pixie.

Enjoying his first experience of Autumn, 8 month old Mick tries desperately to catch any leaf as it falls to the ground.
Initially he was wary of other dogs and lacked confidence, having been too nosy as a pup with the wrong dog !
But Paul helped the little lad come out of himself and at the same time created a dog who is energy and mischievousness personified, as shown in two of the pics.

So near yet so far

A Pack Of German Shepherds

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Sun, 30 Oct 2016 10:23:00 +0000

German Shepherds, staying for residential training, have featured prominently over the past few weeks. They've arrived with a variety of issues though needless to say it's been great fun to work with them all.

Luna arrived recently, anxious of other dogs due to being attacked when younger. She was fearful of all dogs - big and small - and would react on the premise that "attack is the best form of defence", with her hackles up as she barked and lunged at any dog she cross paths with.

But what a different dog we now have. Gone is the insecurity and wariness of the old Luna, replaced by a calm and confident girl who's since been collected by her owner.

Luna, socialising in Keswick ...

.. end enjoying a break on a walk

Meanwhile Mac has been making tremendous progress. This young lad was full of energy on arrival and was reactive to anything and everything ...... apart from commands !
Roll on four weeks and things have really changed. We now have a loose lead when I walk him, along with eye contact in recognition that I'm the pack leader !

Mac in full flight ... and free of a lead !

Romy is the oldest of the GSD's we've been training recently. This big lad is a gentle giant and having full control over him gurantees that I won't be pulled along the ground by his sheer strength !

The Big Wide World

noreply@blogger.com (www.cumbria-dog-training.com) — Wed, 31 Aug 2016 13:33:00 +0000

Introducing a young dog to the "big wide world" brings benefits which can last a lifetime.
An array of different objects coupled with a multitude of noises and smells allows the the pup to become familiar with many things and initial fears give way to confidence, resulting in a happy dog and a relaxed owner holding the lead.
Here a calm Evie and Mick, aged 5 months, meet anything and everything as they negotiate once more everything dog friendly Keswick has to put in their way.

Evie and Mick

Lily the French Bulldog who's in for residential training is really making progress and is now off lead and coming to the recall. Hopefully the next pic will feature both her and sister Penny sitting on my lawn or field, free of any lead.

Lily deep in concentration

I think we can forget about harvesting this field for now. The recent heavy rain brought about flooding and the depth was actually greater than the photograph shows .... and all this in mid August !

Forget your boots - try and find your waders

While some dogs love water, others enjoy running in it but not getting it in their eyes.
German Shepherd Romy can't run fast enough while Bert .....
