Boston and Harvard Square cupcake bakery Sweet is serving up these Mad Men cupcakes to celebrate tomorrow night's season finale! If I were in Boston I'd so be glued to the screen - I'm a big fan but have missed the last two episodes. Very, very cool.

Free cupcakes tomorrow in Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Seacost Online brings news of free cupcakes tomororw, November 7th, from 1 pm to 4 pm at The Old Stove Bake Shoppe in Portsmouth, New Hampshire! Plus what fun flavors they are debuting...

The shop will introduce four new gourmet cupcake flavors: candy corn, death by chocolate, salted caramel and monkey bread. Two hundred customers will receive free their choice of one of the four new flavors on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limit of one per person.

"It fits with our style," Mugherini said of the new cupcakes. "We're always making up new flavors. It makes people smile when they see candy corn or monkey bread."

Mugherini's personal favorite, monkey bread, is similar to the traditional cinnamon pastry, but with a cream cheese frosting. The candy corn cupcakes are made of a light butterscotch cake with vanilla buttercream colored orange, yellow and white. Death by chocolate is made with dark chocolate cake with mini chocolate chips, decorated with a dark chocolate buttercream with a chocolate drizzle.

Made of vanilla brown sugar cake, the salted caramel cupcakes will have a caramel buttercream frosting topped with Himalayan pink sea salt.

Mrs. Schuck over at the blog A Cupcake Addict's Cupcake Collection reviewed the caramel popcorn cupcake (pictured above, via her blog) from Dahlia Bakery in Seattle and had this to say:

Caramel Popcorn Cupcake: This has knocked something off the top 5 list….I’m going to have to ponder for a bit to decide my new favorites. Incredible! The silky icing tasted exactly like caramel-covered popcorn; it was sweet and a bit salty. There was a bit of texture to it which seemed like maybe ground up popcorn. The cupcake itself was a sweet cornmeal cupcake with rich corn flavor. I wish I had bought more than one. Rating: ♥♥♥♥

Teens unite to form charity cupcake company City Girl Cupcake

Inspiring article today about two teenagers joining forces to make cupcakes to benefit charity under the name Big Girl Cupcake. From The Providence Journal:

All on their own, friends Catherine Corrente, 15, and Isabella Veader, 14, came up with the idea last spring to sell organic cupcakes to raise money for a good cause. The Providence girls were sitting at a table at Tony’s Colonial Market when they noticed a cupcake display rack. Before long, an idea was born. Now they are part of Farm Fresh Rhode Island and young food artisans.

The pair recently reached the amazing milestone of raising their first $1,000 for Feeding America’s Hungry Children, a national charity, all during their freshman year in high school. Locally, they donate the treats to the Ronald McDonald House in Providence.

The teens hardly work alone, although it might seem that way on the days they find themselves frosting hundreds of cupcakes. There were the 400 they sold for the recent Italian festival on Federal Hill and 10 1/2 dozen for a St. Jude’s Hospital fundraiser. Birthday party orders can be demanding, too, as they add initials to personalize each one. Still to come, the pair has cupcake orders for two weddings booked for next year.

They do advance orders and local delivery and are promising mail order delivery to the 48 states, and offer sugar-free and gluten-free cupcakes in additional to traditional ones. Photos from their site and Facebook.

For the cupcakes, I chose a recipe that has recently been featured all over the blogging world. It was the winner of October's Cupcake Hero competition for which the secret ingredient was Pumpkin...The recipe was a perfect choice as I wanted to do some sort of Fall-themed cupcake but didn't want them to necessarily be Halloween-themed. (Post on my Halloween Cupcakes coming in the next couple days). Also, Dulce De Leche Ice Cream is one of my FAVORITES and I was intrigued about making my own for the filling. The cupcakes were wonderful! The cake was moist with the perfect combination of fall spices. The filling was not overwhelming, it added just a hint of smoothness to the cake. And the frosting was also so tasty. I definitely recommend these cupcakes to anyone wanting to impress this holiday season.
