Character education and community service are a part of daily life at The Children School (TCS). On May 26, Wilma Pollard and Amanda Thwaits’ first grade class ended their year of service by completing a fundraising project that had an extra special meaning for them.

Their efforts, a walk-a-thon around Piedmont Park’s Lake Clara Meer, raised $3,500 for Press On to CURE Childhood Cancer, a named fund of CURE Childhood Cancer that supports pediatric cancer research. Press On was started by TCS parents Erin and Stephen Chance. The students, including an energetic Patrick Chance who was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma in June 2006, walked three laps around for a total of three miles each. In support of their classmate’s cause, the first graders solicited pledges from family members, friends, neighbors, and TCS faculty and staff to raise a remarkable $3,500.

According to the students’ teachers, Wilma and Amanda, “it was very exciting to make this a memorable event for our young ones to cherish and understand how they can make a difference at their level.” The walk-a-thon was not only a great fundraising opportunity, but also a chance to get some fresh air and exercise and to show the strength of the TCS community.

This Friday, Tom Glavine will be honored by the Atlanta Braves as his jersey number 47 is retired. Few athletes achieve this level of recognition – only the best of the best. Tom Glavine is that and more. On the field, his accomplishments have been many….far too many to list here. Among them are Tom’s Cy Young Awards in 1991 and 1998 and top three finishes in voting four other seasons. He won the clinching game of the 1995 World Series against Cleveland, yielding only one hit over eight innings and was named the World Series Most Valuable Player. He won 20 or more games in a season five times and in August 2007, won his 300th game, a feat very few pitchers ever achieve.

In CURE’s eyes, Tom is every bit the hero off the field as on. His dedication and commitment to children with cancer is truly extraordinary. Childhood cancer became a very personal mission for Tom and his wife Chris when they stood by helplessly watching as the five year old son of close friends was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma. Chris explains, “The family should have been celebrating a win on the basketball court that evening but, instead, were faced with how to proceed with decisions on the care that would ultimately save his life. We cannot tell you the perspective we gained from their treacherous journey.” And while their friends welcomed meals, thoughts and prayers with open arms, Tom and Chris realized this kind of help wasn’t enough for them. They became committed to doing more to find a cure for these children.

Most people have no idea how much Tom Glavine does for or gives to CURE. He does it with sincerity and without fanfare. He gives of his time, his money, his resources. He lends his notoriety and opens his home to raise money for a cure. He spends precious free time with children with cancer and meeting donors, all in the name of making a difference. He caused Major League Baseball to launch an initiative which raised more than $1.5 million for childhood cancer research and brought tremendous awareness to the lack of funding for our cause.. He has followed the progress of children fighting the disease, rejoiced in their successes and grieved their losses.

As Tom is honored by the Atlanta Braves, CURE extends our most heartfelt congratulations to him. CURE and all the children and families we represent are deeply indebted to Tom and celebrate the successes of our hero.

Classic Cadillac of Atlanta is giving back to the community in a unique way by dedicating the entire month of August to CURE Childhood Cancer. By partnering with CURE, Classic Cadillac customers will have the opportunity to aide in efforts to raise money and awareness of CURE whose focus is in improving the care, quality of life, and survival rate of children with cancer. CURE Month at Classic Cadillac will kick-off August 1st where customers can donate directly to CURE and where their donations can
be matched dollar-for-dollar!

From August 1st through August 31st, Classic Cadillac will be accepting donations in transaction of dealership services. Don’t have a Cadillac but want to support the cause? Well, throughout the month of August, Classic Cadillac is offering oil changes on any car make and model. Donations will be accepted at the Classic Cadillac dealership at 7700 Roswell Rd. They will match donations dollar-for-dollar for up to $100, and the grand total of funds raised will be revealed during a check presentation at the CURE “A Tribute to Our Quiet Heroes” luncheon on September 25th at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Atlanta.

Ranked number 1 as the largest volume Cadillac dealership in Georgia, Classic Cadillac prides themselves on their community outreach and involvement. Owner, Mike Dominicone stated, “We are thrilled to partner up with such a wonderful and giving charity such as CURE Childhood Cancer. CURE is a charity that is very dear to my heart and I want to raise as much money as possible in the month of August. It is so important to give back to our community and I am happy to start with CURE.”

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – but many people (too many people!) have no idea that cancer affects children, much less that a Childhood Cancer Awareness Month exists. CURE Childhood Cancer is planning a fundraising and awareness initiative to raise awareness of childhood cancer and CURE during the month of September, and we would like to invite our families to participate.

We are very excited to announce the second annual “CURE’s Kids Conquer Cancer One Day at a Time.” This initiative is a way for our families to get involved and help raise awareness in our community about the problem of childhood cancer and much needed funds for research. Each day in September, CURE will highlight a very special child in our CURE family who has been affected by cancer. Some of the children we highlight are currently fighting the battle, some are children who have finished therapy and are living the cure, and others are children who have lost their battles but will be loved and remembered always.

For families who wish to participate, CURE will feature your child and his or her story on our website, blog and Firstgiving fundraising page.

CURE will set up a Firstgiving fundraising page especially for each child where donations can be made in honor of that child on or for their special day in September. Our goal is to raise $2,000/day each day ($1,000 for each child featured) to help fund research which will lead to better treatments and cures for childhood cancers.

Families who participate will help in spreading the word about their child’s day to their network of friends, family and co-workers and encourage them to support the day by helping to reach or exceed the $1,000 per child goal.

If you would like to participate, please contact Lisa Branch at lisa@curechildhoodcancer.org.
Stanton’s stated mission, to offer “peace and rest in a hurried world,” is accomplished through storytelling, but not in words. His stories are told through instrumental melodies on the piano, transporting a global listening audience to that unique interior place that brings peace to each person’s life and circumstances. Many of his live performances are coupled with exquisite pictures of nature that create a powerful sensory experience.

Music to Light the World is the non-profit organization Stanton founded in 2004 with a vision to offer “peace to the soul” through scripture inspired piano. This organization brings peace, hope and healing to many who need it most through donating CDs and performances to groups such as cancer patients, families who have lost children to cancer, hospitals and inner city ministries. Get Music, Give Hope is an initiative where, for every album purchased, Music to Light the World donates one album to a cancer center or hospital. Music to Light the World is gaining strength and support from prominent philanthropists in Atlanta and beyond who are equally dedicated to touching lives with a message of hope.

The song “Peace” on his award winning CD “December Peace” was written by Stanton because of his friendship with CURE board member Alan Thomson on the night Hayley Thomson earned her angel wings. Stanton Lanier has generously donated a CD for each mom attending “A Tribute to Our Quiet Heroes” this year.
