With Americans’ new focus on buying products made close to home, corporations are moving quickly to co-opt the term “local.” But if everything is local, is anything local? – News & Views – Cover Story – Gambit – New Orleans

HSBC, one of the biggest banks on the planet, has taken to calling itself “the world’s local bank.” Winn-Dixie, a 500-outlet supermarket chain, recently launched a new ad campaign under the tagline, “Local flavor since 1956.” The International Council of Shopping Centers, a global consortium of mall owners and developers, is pouring millions of dollars into television ads urging people to “Shop Local” — at their nearest mall. Even Walmart is getting in on the act, hanging bright green banners over its produce aisles that simply say “Local.”

This new variation on corporate greenwashing — localwashing — is, like the buy-local movement itself, most advanced in the context of food. Hellmann’s, the mayonnaise brand owned by the processed-food giant Unilever, is test-driving a new “Eat Real, Eat Local” initiative in Canada. The ad campaign seems aimed partly at enhancing the brand by simply associating Hellmann’s with local food. But it also makes the claim that Hellmann’s is local, because most of its ingredients come from North America.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is proposing a multibillion-dollar investment in the nation’s community colleges, a $12 billion effort to help the two-year institutions reach, teach and train more people for “the jobs of the future.”

Obama was outlining his four-part program in a speech Tuesday afternoon at Macomb Community College in Warren, Mich.

Under the initiative, schools could qualify for “challenge grants” so they’ll have money to give new programs a try, or expand training and counseling.

Dropout rates would be addressed by designing programs to help students who want to earn an associate’s degree or transfer to a four-year institution do so.

After a day off of grindin in North Carolina, we arrived in our nation’s capital, Washington DC. We picked up DJ Cobo and headed to the venue, Bohemian Cavern. Its this crazy jazz club that literally looks like the inside of a cave, its really legit. Once we got there, we found out that QUESTLOVE would be dj-ing after our set! How ill is that? The show was great, lots of love from the fans.

We’re in Frederick, MD today for a big ass cookout party at DJ Carnage’s place, then off to Philly tomorrow and NYC after that!

This Saturday may well be the socially conscious social event of the season – Recycle for the Arts (R4A), a program of The Green Project, brings us WORN AGAIN nola3, a fashion show that challenges all participating designers to turn the random recycled materials they are given into wearable works of art. Okay, so it may not be quite as glamorous as New York Fashion Week, but it’s a hell of a lot greener (and more creative, if you ask us.) After the fashion show, the recycled fun continues with the famous “Old Skool vs. New Skool” Recycled Dance Competition, a dance-off choreographed and performed by local dance troupes.

You can get tickets to the fashion show, dance competition, and after party for just $15, and all proceeds go to R4A, which supplies low-cost art supplies to the ever-creative New Orleans community. It’s hard to imagine this city without its artists, and R4A works to ensure that no talent goes unnoticed due to lack of affordable materials. So we’ll see y’all there – in your favorite recycled cardboard/newspaper/Heineken bottle outfit, of course. And don’t forget your dancin’ shoes, cause the after party will be rocking till 2am!
