This online children's hair accessory shop is MOM-owned and just plain awesome! Kelly is SO great to work with, and I kid you not, the moment Q opened her "present" she was in LOVE!

I will be honest, for as much as I love doing Q's hair, and buying her all sorts of accessories, she really just puts up with me! She has her favorites, and her preferences, but for the most part she's not super interested in hair clips.

Enter - Bitty Bows Boutique! Q's very first words out of her mouth as she opened the box were,

"Are they JUST FOR ME?!"

and then,

"I LOVE them!!"

She immediately clipped the blue flower into her hair and the turtle into mine!

I don't know about you, but I'm in full "Christmas planning" mode here. I can't believe it's only the beginning of December because already I'm all in! I have some of the presents wrapped, more are ordered, I'm planning where we'll be and what we'll do on Christmas eve and Christmas day.... it's amazing! And even though I'm so ahead of myself this year - there are still things that seem like they're falling through the cracks.

One of those being Santa! Now, I'll be completely honest, I'm a bit up in the air on the whole "Santa" thing. I love the mystery and the fun - but I don't like the idea of "lying" to my kids. HA! Cuz let's be honest - If there are cookies gone in the morning, it was most definitely me who ate them!!

Yet in all my theoretical undecidedness, we will still wake up on Christmas morning to celebrate the birth of Jesus with more presents in the living room than there were the night before. and I tell ya...the past few days? Those empty stockings have been mocking me! I was at a loss for what to put in them this year!!

What is your favorite short hair style?

How do you keep her still while you style her hair?

Do you use (or will you encourage/discourage the use of) heat and/or chemicals on your child's hair?

NEVER..I have a story behind this. Cessalye's hair was very curly at age 2. But at almost 3 it started breaking off BAD. and thinning. I took her to several drs and they ran tons of tests and bloodwork. Nothing came back. They attributed it to the little tiny rubberbands I had used and a high fever she had 3 mo prior. It was very thin and balding before it started coming back in. And when it did, It grew in straight. I was shocked. But over the last 6 mo her hair has regained its tight curls at the scalp. It looked crazy with ringlets underneath all of the straight straggly ends. So over the months as it grew I would trim off the straight ends. Now finally it is back to its beautiful curly state!! Albeit it is short for a 4 yr old but it is adorable and HEALTHY!!

What is the best hair advice you've ever received?

Do not use heat products on childrens sensitive hair.

What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?

To use certain leave in conditioners, that contain alcohol!

If you could give us one tip or trick - what would it be?

I wash her hair every other day, then lightly condition ends. Always air dry naturally and embrace the curls!! Also do not put little rubberbands in that do not say "safe for hair" and never put in rubberbands when child's hair is wet. You are asking for breakage in those areas of hair. Wait until their hair is dry

Today we have an exciting Mommy and Daughter Duo for you! Please give a great big CHI welcome to ..................................... Jenn and Brooklyn!!!

What is your daily hair routine?

Depending on if I wash my hair before bed or in the morning, my routine varies. If I wash it at night and sleep on my curls, when I go to style my hair, I spray "Matrix Color Care Shine Shake", scrunch, and let it air dry. I use Matrix Full Volume Proforma Firm Hold hairspray after I put the curls where I want them. If my hair has been freshly washed, I spray CHI keratin mist before I pick it out. Then I use Tea Tree Thickening spray to help at the roots with my thin hair. Finally I spray on the Curly Sexy Curl Enhancer which is a mousse-like substance. I scrunch and let it air dry for about 30 minutes while I put my makeup on. The last thing I do is blow-dry my hair with a diffuser. I don't touch it with my hands at all, just the diffuser and I turn upside down to help with the volume. After that, I pretty much just spray it because it styles itself the way I like it.

Do you use chemicals in your hair?

I have had my hair colored since I was pretty young. My sister is a stylist and she used my hair many times to try new things on. I also have very dark hair so I've had grays since I was 16. I get color about once every 4-6 weeks. My sister puts a conditioning treatment on my hair from time to time at the salon.

Do you use heat (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc) on your hair?

I use a hair dryer with a diffuser. When I have shorter bangs, I will straighten my bangs and pull them to the side.

Have you ever straightened your hair? Why or why not? What were/are your thoughts on straightening curly hair?

Yes, I have straightened my hair before. In fact, every time I go to the salon my sister straightens it. I tell her to cut it how I can style it curly because I don't have the time to straighten my hair every day. I think it's fine to straighten your hair if it's curly, just like it's ok for people with straight hair to curl theirs. I see no problems with it.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair?

I wear my hair down because it's short with some pulled down on my forehead (sometimes bangs straightened and pulled to the side and on my forehead.) I was blessed with a big forehead. :-)

What do you like best about your curls?

I like that I don't have to do much to style my hair. When I tell others how much time I spend (about 10 minutes or less) on my hair, they can't believe it.

What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?

That I should straighten my hair because it looks better.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give a young person with curls, what would it be?

Two things: Get trims often to cut off the dead ends. Do not let anyone talk you into permanently straightening your hair because THEY think it will look better. Go with what you think about yourself because you need to look at yourself and know that you look like what you want to not what others want you to look like.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give to the Parents of young children with curls, what would it be?!

Who doesn't love a curly headed kid?! Find a great stylist and consult with them about the cut and how you should care for your child's hair.

How old is your little one?

How do you keep her still while you style their hair?

Have them watch tv while you sit behind them. Keep them occupied otherwise. Have fun without moving like sing a song.

Do you use (or will you encourage/discourage the use of) heat and/or chemicals on your child's hair?

No, I feel that at the right age, a person should make their own decisions about what they want to do to their hair. When my daughter is 18, she can choose completely what she would want for herself, but, until then, I will have an opinion and the final say.

What is your favorite aspect of "hair time"?

I love to do Brooklyn's hair. It is so soft and just enough curls to make it full and beautiful. Her hair is great and we have fun during hair time!

If you could give us one tip or trick - what would it be?

Be different! Try new things with your hair.

My daughter and I model together so we love our hair accessories!!!

Dance Recital Hairstyle

It's that time of year again! Dance recital time! Q's toddler dance hairstyle is usually pretty basic, the teacher tells all the little girls in her class how she wants their hair and I comply! This time was a "Curly Ponytail" ....Good thing, since curly hair is what you get on this little head!

Q's curly hair is really the underneath hair however, so since the teacher specified a "curly ponytail" I wanted to put in a little extra effort to get those curls to pop. I used the matching costume clip to bring some of the straighter parts up and away from the curlier hair. I'm not so sure it really worked! But I tried. and then later I took it out and just let it be a normal ponytail with the dance costume clip.

Here she is getting her tap shoes on before the dance recital! You can see here how I clipped some of her hair forward, it's not all just hanging down from the ponytail.

(Sorry for such a blurry photo! My "good" point and shoot camera is on it's very last leg, so I have been using my phone a lot lately.)

Baby Hairstyle Ideas ~ How to Style Toddler Curly Hair

I am just so excited to share this post with you today. A bunch of awesome hair bloggers have gotten together and coordinated another Hair Carnival! Just for YOU! This is a copy cat carnival... and my blog to copy was brand new to me, I am slightly embarrassed to admit I'd never had the pleasure of seeing her work before! But it was super fun!! Huffleblossoms Review - Duct Tape Hair Bows!

I'm thrilled to be reviewing a brand new business today, one created by our awesome hair blog friends over at Tweeny Hair! Have you heard of Huffleblossoms yet? These are the most unique, well made, attractive hair bows I have seen in a really long time! Read on ...

When we first received our Huffleblossoms hair bow in the mail my daughter was thrilled! Her eyes lit up and she couldn't wait to wear it. (Which was interesting because she hasn't been interested in hair or hair accessories lately at all. I've even been known to sneak a bow into her hair before she leaves the house - when she's not looking!)

There was no sneaking with these unique hair bows! She wore it every single day without fail for at least a week. Then when she was finally able to part with it for a few minutes - I just had to borrow it! This is such a versatile hair accessories line ... we both love Huffleblossoms!

The Huffleblossoms hair bow we received was made using .... DUCT TAPE! Now if that isn't hip and cool, I don't know what is! My husband didn't believe me when I told him that. He even wanted to attempt to take it apart and see! (It's not legos, honey!) I quickly rescued the hair bow from his inquisitive grasp... this was by far the most attention he's ever given to our hair bows. Haha!! The fabric on the back of the duct tape makes it pretty sneaky. Soft and pliable, and oh so cool!

Cheap Homemade Fabric Headband

I think fabric headbands are so cute right now! I see people wearing them, I see them in stores, etc! Q tried one on once and I just fell in love! Too cute! ....BUT... she would never leave it on her head. I know that. So I could never bring myself to shell out the $$ they cost, even though they are adorable!

Well, I got home.... and after pining away for these headbands and knowing it was silly to spend the money, I decided to make my own! So here is my very informal tutorial on How to Make a Fabric Headband - the really fast and easy way! (and highly imperfect. Did I mention that?)

Supplies Needed:

1. elastic thread ~ yes, I happened to have this on hand! lol

2. plastic needle (not necessary, I suppose, but definitely made it easier. Plus you should already have one for threading ribbon through your daughter's hairstyles! :D Too cute!)

3. fingernail clippers or scissors (I was too lazy to go get the scissors and the fingernail clippers were right there!)

4. 2 clear rubber hair elastics. You know, the kind that you use when you don't want the elastic to show, but then you feel bad for using them because they're so tough on hair? :) (btw, if you soak them in coconut oil before using them in hair they are much softer and gentle! But you don't need to do that for this project.)

5. a strip of fabric! I already had one cut, I suppose if you were starting from scratch you'd need a scissors for this part! Or just tear it. But a fingernail clipper would take FOREVER. lol

Ok! Now, (drum roll please......) HOW TO MAKE the HEADBAND:

(yes, this is rocket science, it just doesn't get the same recognition!)

1. Measure how long you want the headband to be. If your daughter's head is available - all the better! Otherwise, it's okay to guess. We'll be using elastic to help fudge the sizing!

* to do this I wrapped the fabric around Q's head and held a hand on the fabric at the base of her neck on either side - a small gap between my hands because that's where the elastic will go! (Wow, I hope that made sense!)

2. Using your clear hair elastics, tightly wrap one around each spot where your hands were.

3. Next thread your elastic thread (on your crafting needle!) through the clear hair elastics and tie them tightly to each elastic! I used two strands of elastic thread to try to make it a bit stronger.

4. .... oh wait. That's it! You're done! :D Easy, huh? :) I even left the ends of the fabric hanging down long :)

I also made her a white sparkly gauzy one! I think they're adorable, maybe someday she'll learn to leave it on! Oh well! They were cheap! :)

Oh, yeah, one more design note.... I didn't bother to sew the edges because I figure they can just be tucked under! I made my strips of fabric wide so that I can have a wide headband....OR..... fold it up and have a narrow one! That's the versatility of fabric for ya! :) It's so soft and thin that folding it works. (and who has the time to fold over the edges and sew them up?? Especially when I think about how often Q will actually wear it....)

I know, I should have waited to share this 'til an anniversary....but I'm working on our wedding photo album and just couldn't wait! We'll have been married 5 years in April.

Friday Feature ~ Baby O!

How old is your little one?
Baby O is the big three and doesn't act a day over 25 lol

What is the daily hair routine?
Every morning I spray Baby O's hair with some water and comb through it before I add my homemade shea butter mix to her hair for moisture (if it's out in her not-so-baby-anymore fro). Sometimes I switch it up and use store bought moisturizers, but I always go back to my own mix because I feel it works better on her hair. At night I do the same thing. I really only wet her hair in the bath when it's time to wash it. Summer time I wash her hair once a week (or when she brings home food, dirt and the entire sandbox in her hair lol). This winter I've only been washing her hair once a month and her hair is thriving! When her hair is styled I moisturize day and night, as needed.

What is your favorite hairstyle?
Free! Baby O loves her fro, but she'll also ask for braids so she can "clack-clack" while she's running around. When I braid it up I love the pigtail cornrows that I recently got brave enough to try lol. I gave myself a goal of learning how to cornrow by the end of this last summer and I did it! I'm not the best by all means, but they're getting better :-) Oh--I also love to twist her hair...they're so versatile and absolutely adorable on Baby O!

What do you like best about her curls?
I love Baby O's curls because they're hers! They fit her perfectly and if I want to leave her hair free all I have to do is add a bow and we're done. Don't get me wrong, there are times when her curls give me a tough time, but I wouldn't trade her hair for anything in the world.

How do you keep her still while you style her hair?
I use the bribe method. I let Baby O have control of the television remote and she can watch whatever shows she wants (age appropriate of course :-)) or whatever movie she chooses from her collection. Dora fruit snacks are also always close by, too.

Do you use (or will you encourage/discourage the use of) heat and/or chemicals on your child's hair?
Nope! No chemicals in my baby girl's hair. I would prefer to leave her hair chemical free for as long as I can...which means as long as she lives in my house. I may back off and consider it when she's a teenager, but it would completely break my heart to see her natural curl pattern gone.

What is your favorite aspect of "hair time"?
I love that she pretty much has no other choice but to be with me :-)! I love that we can discuss what happened during the day and I tell her how pretty her curls are. We have our "girly" time and talk about whatever pops into her three year old mind. It relaxes me to get my fingers in her hair and mess around with it. Baby O loves when I do her hair...even if they style isn't quite the best, she doesn't care! She walks around with pride telling EVERYONE "my mama did my hair!". I love that little girl!

What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?
I was told by a stylist that I needed to put Doo Gro on Baby O's hair to get it to grow. I actually tried it, but it smelled like menthol and her daycare providers actually winced from the strong smell when I brought her to school with it on her scalp (this was before I started researching proper hair care for her, I'm new to the game and was just listening to what I was told...bad idea). I really think that is the only bad advice I've received--her daycare providers are a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate all of their inputs!

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give a young person with curls, what would it be?
Love your curls! I hate when I see young girls spending so much time pressing their curls flat just to fit in with their friends. Be yourself and get those curls as big as you can! (I say this as a straight haired person with major curl envy lol)

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give to the Parents of young children with curls, what would it be?
Learn to care for your child's curls how YOU choose to care for them. If you don't know what to do, research it until you find the products and routines that are best for your child. Just because one person chooses to use only natural/homemade products doesn't mean that you should. Learn how your child's curls like to be styled--curls have their own personality and don't like to go into certain styles. Don't force the hair to do what it doesn't want to do :-)

Friday Feature! ~ GoldiLocks N Me!!

Oh goodness! Is it friday already?!?! Well do I have a treat for you! Please read on for an awesome interview with the mama from Goldilocks *N* Me .... and visit her blog too!

What is your daily hair routine?

It varies greatly! It depends on whether or not Goldilocks has a style in. If she does, then I just give her hair a quick moisturizing spray. Right now I'm using Shea Moisture Hold and Shine Moisturizing Hair Mist. But I've also made my own spritz out of water and conditioner before. If she doesn't have a style her daily style will depend on whether or not she has school and I'll incorporate a moisturizer into the styling process. Usually SM Curl and Style Milk. For school I'll mainly stick to ponytails or whatever I can accomplish in the 5 minutes I have for hair! If it's a Saturday and we have no plans I'll just do 1 or 2 braids. And for Sundays I'll do something nice for church. Many of the pictures in our style gallery on facebook are Sunday styles.

Do you have any other "routines" that you add to that, but don't do every day? If so, what are they?

I wash Goldilocks' hair weekly and cowash mid-week (between our shampoo washes). After washing and conditioning I'll apply moisturizer and then usually band her hair in 2 sections to prepare for styling in the morning.

Do you use chemicals in your hair?

No I don't. She's only 6 and I feel like that is way too young.

Do you use heat (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc) on her hair?

I have used heat on her hair before. The last time was almost a year ago (Easter). I generally would flat iron her hair for Easter and Christmas each year but last Christmas we used our awesome no-heat curlers instead :)

You have curly hair, too! Have you ever straightened YOUR hair? Why or why not? What are your thoughts on straightening curly hair?

I straighten my hair all the time. Average would probably be every other month or so. And it is out of sheer laziness. I have a LOT of hair and it's a bit much to deal with this much hair every day when it's left curly. I've been making an effort to wear my hair natural more though, and I'm planning a big chop in the very near future to make it a bit quicker to deal with. I don't have any problems with adults straightening their hair. I try not to do it too frequently though because heat damage can ruin the curl structure.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair?

That's tough. I like my hair straight because it's easy. But I love the compliments I get when I get those curls poppin'!

What do you like best about your curls?

That they're so healthy. My hair is thick and can take a lot of abuse, like all that flat-ironing, and still thrive.

What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?

Nobody's ever really offered me any advice that I can think of! Not bad advice anyway. Maybe I'm unapproachable?? I have had a bad hair experience though. When Goldilocks was about 2, she and her big bro were in an in-home daycare. One day I came to pick the kids up after work and G's hair was in a different style than when I'd dropped them off that morning. It was in a TIGHT side ponytail. The daycare lady informed me that her daughter (a 9 year old) had been "just a'combing on her hair alllllll day long!!" I almost had a breakdown at the fact that my baby had probably been tortured getting her hair pulled on for the whole entire day. Can you imagine?! I not so nicely informed them that my child was not a doll and she was not to touch her hair again. We left that daycare soon after for other reasons.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give a young person with curls, what would it be?

To embrace them. Put effort into finding out what styles and products will work for your hair to bring out its full potential so you can love it. Don't be embarrassed to ask your curly friends what they use on their hair. Go on blogs and youtube (with your parent's permission/ supervision!) and find cute hairstyles that will work for your hair type.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give to the Parents of young children with curls, what would it be?!

Moisture, moisture moisture! If you don't know how to care for curls, don't be afraid to ask. You'd be surprised at how much info you can get from a simple "curly hair care" inquiry on a search engine! Gather info from a few different sources before making any drastic changes to your regimen. Hair blogs and youtube are great resources.

Anything else you would like to add that I haven't thought to ask?!

Well, just that I'm really happy that I've discovered how to take proper care of my family's curls. I'm still learning but I'm worlds ahead of where I used to be!

Sure! The styles are:

2 laced cornrows on wash and go curls,

slide braid to 4 strand/3d braid, and

cage braid to fishtailed milkmaid braids

I always enjoy visiting Char's blog and seeing all the great things she does with her daughters hair - and more! Lucky for us, she was interested in featuring her youngest on our blog! Here we go ... !

How old is your little one?

Choca is 2.5 years old!!

What is your favorite hair style?

Our go to style is TWISTS!! That's her signature style!! She's been wearing it for most of her life! :)

How do you keep her still while you style her hair?

I love to use beads as a distraction. She loves to make designs on the floor with them. Also, I give her a brush, comb, and her baby dolls and she styles their hair... Tends to work for us.....MOST OF THE TIME! :~D

Do you use (or will you encourage/discourage the use of) heat and/or chemicals on your child's hair?

I have NEVER used heat or chemicals on Choca's hair. I don't think it's necessary for her. I am a fan of shrinkage and I love her natural texture. We tend to pick styles that showcase her natural texture (and shrinkage).

What is your favorite aspect of "hair time"?

I love talking to her about her hair. She is very intrigued when it comes to her hair... She loves how long it's grown... She loves putting hair jewelry in it, and she loves speaking to me about the styles she wants to try!! :)

What is the best hair advice you've ever received?

The ABSOLUTE best hair advice I've ever received was, "Do what works for you and YOUR hair. Don't worry about what other people are doing/using!"

What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?

HAHA!! Oh, where to start... That the products I use are wrong... Or that the styles I give my daughters are 'too intricate' for their ages... :-/

If you could give us one tip or trick - what would it be?

If you have a young child who is restless and doesn't like staying still for a LONG period of time, TAKE BREAKS!! Make enough time for 'hair time' so that you can get it done w/out breaking your back and keeping your baby stagnant! :)

Anything else you would like to add that I haven't thought to ask?!

Choca is truly a little fashionista!! After she gets her hair done for the day, she loves to pic out clothes and hair accesories that match and get her pictures taken!! She's a little model in the making!! :) <3

What is your daily hair routine?

We usually wash Naomi's hair twice or three times a week, then we would put hair products such as Mixed Chicks on her hair to let it stay. If we don't wash her hair we would braid it and take it out of the braids to make it get curls.

Do you have any other "routines" that you add to that, but don't do every day? If so, what are they?

Sometimes while we wash Naomi's hair we add olive oil or we might try to put curlformers in her hair at night.

Do you use chemicals in your hair?

No her hair does not need any chemicals it's naturally curly.

Do you use heat (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc) on your hair?

No Naomi has not tried blow drying her hair yet due to the softness and since she's little we don't want to burn her scalp.

Have you ever straightened your hair? Why or why not? What were/are your thoughts on straightening curly hair?

We never tried it yet because of the softness, if we do try in the future we will go to a professional to ensure safety.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair?

My favorite way to wear her hair is in an afro with all her curls out and about.

What do you like best about your curls?

You don't have to spend hours doing it and it's easier to do than other hairstyles.

What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?

The worst advice I've ever received is to use hair perm to make Naomi's hair straight. I think it's a bad idea because I don't think she needs it really her hair isn't coarse and it is naturally curly, it also can become straight if blown out.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give a young person with curls, what would it be?

To wash your hair no more than 3 times a week to keep the nutrients inside after you wash it add curl products then style it and it's going to look awesome.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give to the Parents of young children with curls, what would it be?!

Let the kids wear hair that shows their personalities and how they are and who they are.

Toddler Dance Hairstyle

I just LOVE this hairstyle for dance! I think it's a great toddler hairstyle for the days you need her hair OUT of her way (think painting?! anything messy really). and you can leave it in for more than one day! It's also a good protective hairstyle because it keeps all the hair contained and ... well... protected! You could braid farther to the ends for more protection, too.

This hairstyle worked great for us as a unique dance hairstyle, it would also be a great gymnastics hairstyle I would think!

The best part? It's EASY!!! (given you know how to do some kind of braid)

First I braided two dutch braids (or cornrows) from the front of her head to the back.

Then I crossed them over each other! That's it!!

I guess I added some bows for flair ;-)

Don't forget a bobby pin or two if the bows won't be enough to hold the braids up by themselves!

and I just have to add that even though I didn't get a picture of them yet - Q has the CUTEST little lace leg warmers for dance class!!! I found them at www.fitzthumboutique.com Go check her stuff out!! LOVE!!

Locks of Love Haircut... for me!

I have a history of long hair....

Even waaaaay back when I was a kid I had long hair.

Well eventually that gets old and you just need some variety, right?! So one day, years ago, I chopped 10 inches off at a hair salon in a mall. and I sent that ponytail to Locks of Love!

That started a chain of events! I do enjoy long hair. and I do enjoy variety!

This was me in December.....

Getting my hair styled professionally as you can see!

AND .... here I am tonight! After a visit to a "real" hair salon that is NOT in a mall... hehehe!!

My dear hubby is very proud of his double-chin-less photo angles!! I have to say I am too!

and as soon as I mail it off I can proudly say I have donated FOUR 10 inch ponytails over the years! and I intend to keep it up! Variety in hair length suits me well. :)

Fishtail Braid

Fishtail Braid! Fishbone Braid? Fishy fishy fishy.... I think there's more names, too. But my mom always called them fishtail braids when I was little, so I guess that's what I call them too!

I did this fishtail braid on myself (obviously!) trying to be a cool and hip with the side ponytail thing.... it kinda worked I guess! haha But my hair wasn't quite long enough, so the left side fell out pretty quickly. Layers! Oh well.

Really should have used a cute flower or something to finish it off with a twist!
