What is your daily hair routine?

We usually wash Naomi's hair twice or three times a week, then we would put hair products such as Mixed Chicks on her hair to let it stay. If we don't wash her hair we would braid it and take it out of the braids to make it get curls.

Do you have any other "routines" that you add to that, but don't do every day? If so, what are they?

Sometimes while we wash Naomi's hair we add olive oil or we might try to put curlformers in her hair at night.

Do you use chemicals in your hair?

No her hair does not need any chemicals it's naturally curly.

Do you use heat (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc) on your hair?

No Naomi has not tried blow drying her hair yet due to the softness and since she's little we don't want to burn her scalp.

Have you ever straightened your hair? Why or why not? What were/are your thoughts on straightening curly hair?

We never tried it yet because of the softness, if we do try in the future we will go to a professional to ensure safety.

What is your favorite way to wear your hair?

My favorite way to wear her hair is in an afro with all her curls out and about.

What do you like best about your curls?

You don't have to spend hours doing it and it's easier to do than other hairstyles.

What is the worst hair advice you've ever received?

The worst advice I've ever received is to use hair perm to make Naomi's hair straight. I think it's a bad idea because I don't think she needs it really her hair isn't coarse and it is naturally curly, it also can become straight if blown out.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give a young person with curls, what would it be?

To wash your hair no more than 3 times a week to keep the nutrients inside after you wash it add curl products then style it and it's going to look awesome.

If there was one thing you could say or one tip you could give to the Parents of young children with curls, what would it be?!

Let the kids wear hair that shows their personalities and how they are and who they are.

Toddler Dance Hairstyle

I just LOVE this hairstyle for dance! I think it's a great toddler hairstyle for the days you need her hair OUT of her way (think painting?! anything messy really). and you can leave it in for more than one day! It's also a good protective hairstyle because it keeps all the hair contained and ... well... protected! You could braid farther to the ends for more protection, too.

This hairstyle worked great for us as a unique dance hairstyle, it would also be a great gymnastics hairstyle I would think!

The best part? It's EASY!!! (given you know how to do some kind of braid)

First I braided two dutch braids (or cornrows) from the front of her head to the back.

Then I crossed them over each other! That's it!!

I guess I added some bows for flair ;-)

Don't forget a bobby pin or two if the bows won't be enough to hold the braids up by themselves!

and I just have to add that even though I didn't get a picture of them yet - Q has the CUTEST little lace leg warmers for dance class!!! I found them at www.fitzthumboutique.com Go check her stuff out!! LOVE!!

Locks of Love Haircut... for me!

I have a history of long hair....

Even waaaaay back when I was a kid I had long hair.

Well eventually that gets old and you just need some variety, right?! So one day, years ago, I chopped 10 inches off at a hair salon in a mall. and I sent that ponytail to Locks of Love!

That started a chain of events! I do enjoy long hair. and I do enjoy variety!

This was me in December.....

Getting my hair styled professionally as you can see!

AND .... here I am tonight! After a visit to a "real" hair salon that is NOT in a mall... hehehe!!

My dear hubby is very proud of his double-chin-less photo angles!! I have to say I am too!

and as soon as I mail it off I can proudly say I have donated FOUR 10 inch ponytails over the years! and I intend to keep it up! Variety in hair length suits me well. :)

Fishtail Braid

Fishtail Braid! Fishbone Braid? Fishy fishy fishy.... I think there's more names, too. But my mom always called them fishtail braids when I was little, so I guess that's what I call them too!

I did this fishtail braid on myself (obviously!) trying to be a cool and hip with the side ponytail thing.... it kinda worked I guess! haha But my hair wasn't quite long enough, so the left side fell out pretty quickly. Layers! Oh well.

Really should have used a cute flower or something to finish it off with a twist!

A New Year ~ A New Start

Wow! Christmastime was busy for us this year! Not at all in the way we expected, but still crazy. I'm still reeling!! I hope the New Year has been treating all my precious followers well so far!! I'd love to hear about your Christmases and New Year's celebrations in the comments!!!

This new year is feeling different to me than many others in the past. A new calendar hasn't often made me feel like busting out the new years resolutions in the past. And prior to January 1st, 2012, I didn't think this time would be any different.

Maybe it's just my mood of the evening ;-)

Or maybe I'm finally getting to a stage in life where a new start is welcome and needed!! hahaha!!

I haven't made a list of resolutions. But I think I almost could! My new start for 2012 will include new things to learn! I need to learn about cutting curly hair. I need to learn how to be a better marketer for my doula business and my baltic amber store! I want this year to be new as far as GOALS! I want to get better at setting small attainable goals that all move in baby steps toward the big goals.

I've not been great in the past at looking farther down my potential life path than a year.... maybe two. But I think it's time to start something new! Long term plans! haha!!

I have had some ideas and inspiration for this blog ... but I haven't been good about getting them done. I need a new start to that! I want to accomplish my desires!

I have a new office. and a special drawer dedicated to Curly Hairdo Ideas! Let's hope my newfound desire for organization helps!! hahaa!!

Anyway, here's to a new start ~ a new year! Here's to taking baby steps and accomplishing dreams!!!

ShaunnaMichelle's Boutique!! The Inside Scoop

Hello! My name is Shannon and I am the owner and designer for ShaunnaMichelle's Boutique. I would first like to thank Karli for giving me a spot on her blog and her followers for reading this post and visiting my store!

My husband and I recently celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary and we live in the beautiful state of Montana with our two boys, Jaden and Jordan. Jaden is 11 and in the 6th grade. Jordan is 9 and in the 3rd grade. We also own a cat named Zoe and a rat named Mocha.

My Etsy store has been opened since May of 2008. I chose the name, ShaunnaMichelle's, after my daughter. She would have celebrated her Sweet 16 this year, on November 6th. ShaunnaMichelle died at birth. It was a defining moment in my life. In an effort to keep her memory alive and close to me always, I use her name for my business.

I have always been a mother first. I stopped working shortly after my first son was born due to some really dreadful experiences with care providers. It soon became clear that I needed to stay home to guarantee my son's safety and well-being. My husband and I made the necessary budget cuts, and I quit my job. Once the boys started school, I found I could only clean house so much. I needed something to do with my time when they were away during the day at school. It took me a long time to find a hobby I enjoyed. For the longest time, I really didn't think I could find a hobby that I really loved. Then, one day, I walked into a bead store. The woman there helped me make my very first bracelet and from that point on, I was hooked! It soon became clear that I was making way more jewelry than I could ever wear, so the idea of starting my Etsy store was born. My husband thought it would be a nice way to support my habit and I hoped it would be a great way for me to earn some extra income from home while still being able to stay home with my children.

I started out with only the Etsy store and then eventually added a Facebook page. Now I attend craft shows and other venues where I can sell my items. I've also increased my local items to include knitted hats and scarves, handmade greeting cards, and handmade blankets. I hope to eventually offer these items in my shop online as well. Eventually, my husband and I want to own an actual Boutique here in our home town. In the meantime, I truly enjoy the people I meet online and at craft shows. Though sometimes I get completely stumped on ideas, I wouldn't trade this for the world. I love being able to do what I love and being able to share it with others.

Who Makes the Decisions about your Child's Life???

An eight year old boy and his family are being harrassed about his chemo and radiation care! The parents have done extensive research and are now being forced to continue chemo when the PET test results have shown that the amount they've already done has been enough! He is cancer-free! But still, more chemo is being ordered. The parents feel it is too high a risk to take.

THESE DRUGS have NOT been approved by the FDA for use in children!!!!

Please read the whole heartbreaking story for yourself and consider donating to this family and this cause. PARENTS know their children. Don't you??

"After looking into the matter, both the local CPS agency and the local prosecuting attorney refused to file charges. They believed that the parents were making reasonable decisions for Jacob.

The doctors still would not take no for an answer. They called higher authorities in the state level CPS agency. The doctors had to make several calls before they finally found someone who would agree with them.

As a result of all of these calls, the local CPS agency was pressured into filing medical neglect charges against the parents.

The local prosecutor still refused to take a case against the family, so the state level CPS officials hired an independent private lawyer to serve as the prosecutor against Ken and Erin Stieler."

With a Little Faith and Hope ~ Interview

Anyway, Helena has started a blog and natural store as a way of documenting and sharing her recipe adaptations and inspirations - as well as pass on her natural creations in the way of lip balms, body scrubs and more! (see below!) So without further ado - Let the interview begin!

Curly Hairdo Ideas: I saw you mentioned you try to follow the Nourishing Traditions ideas, can you tell me more about what that is and why you follow it?

With a Little Faith and Hope: Nourishing Traditions follows a more traditional way of cooking. When making grains we soak them in an acidic water first. In doing this it reduces the phytic acid in the grains. Phytic acid is a nutrient inhibitor and so by soaking the grain the nutrients are more readily available to the body. This works great for making whole grain breads and muffins because the lose the grainy texture making them more palatable. We do not shy away from healthy natural saturated fats (coconut oil butter red meat). We do keep away from the "healthy" oils (canola corn soy) When it come to the foods we buy my theory is if I can't make it in my kitchen we don't eat it. We stay away from anything that might contain a GMO (Genetically Modified Organisim). I highly recommend looking into this if you have never heard of GMO's it will be very eye opening. We also don't eat refined sugar and eat very little sugar. There are other things that we do but these are the easiest to explain. It is a very informative book and for me it was very eye opening. Even though I thought we were eating a healthy diet by making a few changes our health has improved. I highly recommend it to everyone.

CHI: How old are your girls and how do you find ways they can help you in the kitchen without going crazy yourself?!

LFH: My girls are 4 and 2. Most of the time they just sit on the counter and hand me things stir and just watch. They also like to take my little wooden spoons and pretend to make their own food. If we are doing something more complex I give them little jobs to do such as gathering tools or pouring things. They love to also just sit and watch when I am making supper or working with something they can't do yet like cutting or cooking on the stove.

CHI: How do you keep them interested in helping you in the kitchen?

LFH: I let them come and go as they want. I don't make them stay with me if they are bored. I give them little jobs to do. We talk and sing and talk to my mom on Skype.

CHI: How are you so lucky to be the main cook in the house when your hubby was a chef? Can you tell us more about being married to a chef? ;-)

LFH: My husband works outside the house and is at work most days until supper time. Being the homemaker the job of cooking is mine. I will say that the first year was quite interesting I had hardly any cooking experience before we got married. There was quite a bit of critiquing done by my husband.

CHI: What's the one kitchen item you "couldn't live without?"

LFH: That one is hard. I would have to day my chef's knife and pans. I think I would be completely lost without them. As much as I like many other things if I had these I could do just about anything in a pinch.

CHI: What do you like most about cooking?

LFH: I like being creative and trying new things. The hardest thing about doing this blog will be writing things down. I like to just add a little bit of this and that until it tastes right and then I forget what I did and can't make it just the same again. The good thing about that is that we never have things exactly the same way twice. The bad thing is when I completely forget what I did the one time it was just perfect.

CHI: What products will you have available in your store? What's your personal favorite?

LFH: There will be some lip balms and lip scrubs.
Body moisturizers and shower scrubs.
There will also be baby wraps and baby/ toddler hair accessories up after I get some made and and some videos made.

Protective Styling Challenge Options

In keeping with my last Protective Styling Challenge Recap post, I thought we'd share collage number 2!! I just loved all these styles and it's so fun to get to see them again!

By "fun to see these protective styles" I don't necessarily mean I'm proud of how this one looks! But I think it was important for us to really stretch this mom's comfort zone on how often to style hair. Sometimes we over-manipulate and cause more damage than anything! So while this style was very ready to come down, I was also proud of myself for daring to leave it one more day! and by bringing it up into the ponytails it helped give it some variation and not look tooooooo awful.

Dance Hair for Little Girls

I love dance! I loved being in dance class when I was younger - and I love that Q is now old enough to be in dance class! Not only do I want to pass on my love of dance and movement, but it's so fun watching her learn .... and get all dressed up her cute little outfits! Ok, Ok, but the best part every week is doing her hair - you got me! Coming up with new and creative little dance hair styles for my little girl is so fun! The only "rule" for dance hair at our dance school is that it be up.

That leaves the options pretty much wide open!

Now don't get me wrong, there are days we just run out the door and hope we make it on time, regardless of hair, but when I can I like to give her a unique dance hairstyle for my little girl!

I've been hearing about these sock bun hairstyles for awhile - but had never tried one.

Until now! I just found a tutorial on youtube (I don't even remember which one, sorry!) and copied her version of how to do a sock bun.

I used an old sock of Q's, but now I see why they sometimes say to use a tube sock - see how the right side is bigger? That's the side that the heel was on!

All in all I think the sock bun hairstyle makes a wonderful, classic dance hairstyle for little girls! It's just so sweet and innocent. I (of course) love her curls too much, so instead of tucking the ends in I left the curl out to play.

Q also had a few braids in that day so we just left them. I think they added a nice little touch to this little girls dance hairstyle! A touch a of "spunk" in that classic hairdo!

p.s. What do you think of her outfit? It's hard to see in these pictures, but it's an old gymnastics outfit from when I was a little girl! haha!! Thanks, Mom!

Protective Styling Challenge - Recap!

I just thought it would be fun to do a little recap of our Protective Styling Challenge hairstyles we did with Beads, Braids and Beyond last May. (I believe she's doing another challenge now, too! Go check it out!)

As you can see this one wasn't all protective styeles - because Q had her first dance recital that week! Aren't they all just CUTE?!?! I didn't use any harsh hair ties with metal or anything, though, just the soft elastics. We made sure to keep her curls very moisturized and not to mess with them too much while they were out of their protective hairstyle. How does your natural hair care routine change when the weather gets colder? I usually forget what I did the last time the season was here by the time it comes around again!

I guess that works. It's like a brand new adventure every time I readjust to the weather changes and my daughter's naturally curly hair!

But there are some tried and true things to I don't forget as the cold weather makes us don our heavy winter gear.

Protective Hairstyles ROCK. You can goop up on the moisturizing products, seal all that good stuff in with a good hair butter or oil and not have to worry about making her hair look wet or oily! Gotta love that! Especially on very light, fine, naturally curly hair.

Of course, if you're outside in the winter, you could say it doesn't really matter what you do with your hairstyle because this is what you will look like! .....

Translation: Either windbown or all covered up! Just make sure if your poor head is going bare - don't skimp on the moisture before and after! Conditioner is your best friend. and pre-poos. and deep conditioning! I love winter hair care!!

Going out with a hat on is of course a must for our little loves, however, so ... here's a tip for wearing hats in the winter .....

Invest the time or energy or money to get one lined with Satin! A satin lined winter hat is a lifesaver for curly hair! A satin lined hat will protect your child's hair while she's in her carseat AND at the park! (Or ski hill as the case may be.) I've also done some reading on humecetants and winter hair, etc, but obviously I need to read more and figure out the mystery! Right now I don't even think I'm spelling it right! HAHA!! Good luck googling that one!

Quick and Easy Protective Hairstyle for Toddler!

Need a hairstyle for traveling? This toddler with curly hair was about to spend the better part of 3 days in a carseat! and you *know* what carseats do to curly hair! Or any hair for that matter.....

I needed a quick protective hairstyle because I didn't have much time to prepare and spend hours braiding before we left.

and of course I wanted it to look cute while we were on vacation! I also wanted to show off her curls a little once we got there.... so the second day I unbraided the tails and spritzed with water and we had bouncy curls! (yet with the top still protected!)

For the drive home I put each tail back into one braid so we had NO loose curly toddler hair for the carseat to damage! Very successful, I thought!

The SITS girls are my heroes. Did you know that?! I joined the site forever ago and never remember to participate. :/ But even still occasionally some sweet comments show up here on my blog from a SITS sister!

Did you see my Wordless Wednesday post the other day?! I found lots of neat blogs by following the linky! and one of them mentioned ... camera ... giveaway ... and the SITS girls.... I had to look into it.

Did you know that my camera is breaking? I know! Poor sad camera! It now takes pictures that look like this --------->

Yeah ... that's me again ...

Goofy subject matter not always included. That's extra!

not only does the lens cover not open all the way - now it won't let me zoom in! It just says, "Turn Off Camera and Turn On Again" What's that about?!

SOOOOO, when I saw this beautiful post full of gorgeous pictures (I'm so sorry to the blog that I can't remember where I found you!), then I read about the CAMERA GIVEAWAY ... yes, that's RIgHt! I knew it was a match made in heaven!

So I went to the SITS site and found this:

So I could have shown you pictures of the day I bought Q cups of finger paint .... (WHY?!?! do people do that?!)

and I'll always remember one of Q's favorite pastimes ... making "soup," aka playing with flour, stirring it in a bowl, putting it in other bowls, basically getting it ALLLLL over the table, chairs, floor, herself, etc.
