Growing up a short drive from Belmont Park, I’ve always watched the major horse races. In particular, the Kentucky Derby held special fascination. There’s something about the packed infield at Churchill Downs, the festive atmosphere and the feature stories about the personalities, both human and equine, that make up horse racing.

Watching the opening round of the NBA playoffs, I wouldn’t blame David Stern and league management if they were privately rooting for a Laker-Celtics championship series. Television executives have no need to be neutral, and they have been quoted to the effect that it would be in the best interest of ratings.

There will always be stirring side-bars at Augusta National for the Masters championship - Johnson Wagner, invited in by virtue of his first PGA win in Houston last week, or Davis Love missing out after 70 consecutive major starts. But there is only one real story, the kind of story that is on everybody’s lips before the first tee shot is launched: Can Tiger Woods win the first leg of the Grand Slam?

Let the madness begin!

First, time to acknowledge all the unhappy teams that have been left out. Sure, you could make an argument for Arizona State, which had a sweep over Arizona and a win over Stanford. And Dayton had a case, although injuries during the conference season hurt.

Life on the road can be a strange business. The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team had an uneventful trip to Ruston to play Louisiana Tech. The journey from Rustin to Las Cruces was anything but. The team had a 5 a.m. wake-up call to depart the hotel at 6 for a bus trip to Shreveport. At Shreveport, their 8:20 a.m. flight to Dallas was cancelled.

The best you can say about NBA All-Star weekend is that nobody got shot. And I suppose that there is little harm in the made-for-TV aura of the surrounding events. Dwight Howard was actually entertaining in the slam-dunk contest, an event that has long outlived its usefulness.
