Coming August 1st, the University Libraries website will have a new look. The Libraries’ new website will provide the same services that patrons are used to, but in a cleaner, more streamlined environment. Elements of the new look will seem familiar to users as it is based on the University-wide website design. Patrons should find the site easier to navigate, allowing them to get the information they need quicker. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments about the new look please contact us at libhelp@usm.edu.

Southern Miss sculpture major MJ Hill presents Things in Our Closet, an exhibit of paintings and sculpture currently on display in the Gallery at Cook Library. According to Hill, “This show is about being an art student at USM. It is meant to provide insight into what we learn and how I live. I am showing the changes and development that happened in several bodies of work over a one year period. I hope to entertain with not only an art show, but a record of how things have come to be.” Things in Our Closet runs through August 19, 2011.

Developing Home photography exhibit at Cook Library

Southern Miss advanced photography students Jill Johnson and Jesse McDonald exhibit their photographs for the first time with a show they curated called “Developing Home.” Photography professor Betty Press wanted to give her students the opportunity to prepare and present their own exhibit as a final project. Jill Johnson, who grew up in Florida, writes of the show, “The title of the exhibit is ‘Developing Home,’ which has such a significant meaning to me. I have been away from the place I have always called home for almost five years now. I miss it every day. I have tried with this group of photographs to make Mississippi feel more like home.” The exhibit will be on display in the Gallery at Cook Library until June 10.

April Science Café Features Intelligence of Dolphins

Dr. Stan Kuczaj, Professor of Psychology and Director of the Southern Miss Marine Mammal Behavior and Cognition Laboratory, will discuss research on dolphin cognition and communication, as well as correlations between dolphin and human behavior at the next Science Café Monday, April 18 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Guests will view “How Smart are Dolphins,” a Nova Science episode that aired February 9, 2011 that featured Dr. Kuczaj and his research.

Off the coast of Honduras, on Roatan Island, a legendary experiment in dolphin communication is being attempted for the first time in 20 years—one that could prove that dolphins can, in effect, "speak" with one another to coordinate their behavior. Other studies reveal that these playful marine mammals can plan ahead and problem-solve in ways few other animals can.

Friends of University Libraries present Hunter Cole, author of The Legs Murder Scandal

The Friends of Southern Miss University Libraries welcome author and Laurel-native Hunter Cole for a discussion and signing of his book, The Legs Murder Scandal, on Monday, April 11, at 6:00 pm in room 123 of Cook Library on the Southern Miss campus in Hattiesburg.

In 1935 in Laurel, Mississippi, Ouida Keeton was arrested and charged with murdering her mother, Daisy. At the time, the murder of Daisy Keeton was one of the most lurid crimes in the nation. Because of the sensationalism of the crime, Ouida became known as "Mississippi’s Lizzie Borden." Through his research, Cole details the two separate trials of Ouida Keeton and her lover, W.M. Carter, while presenting new facts and clearing up other misinformation.

The Friends of University Libraries group was started in 2010 as an organization to bolster community support of University Libraries. For more information on becoming a Friend of University Libraries or the Hunter Cole event, please call 601.266.4241

Explore Maya culture at the next Science Café

Dr. Marie Danforth, Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Southern Mississippi will discuss Maya culture and some recent major findings at the next Science Café Monday, March21, 2011 from 6-7:30 p.m. Part of the Nova film, Cracking the Maya Code will be viewed.

As Mayan inscriptions have been slowly deciphered, it has become clear that this was an empire of divine rule and blood sacrifice, with warrior-kings waging constant battles, conquests, and power struggles with rival lords. Today, the decoders are working with the descendants of the ancient Maya to link their spoken language with the deciphered glyphs, and modern Maya are reclaiming the rich and complicated history that has finally been unlocked.

Spotlight on Collections: Journey to Planet Earth on DVD

This award-winning 12 DVD documentary series narrated by Matt Damon is now available for checkout at Cook Library.

Journey to Planet Earth introduces students to some of the most important environmental issues of the 21st century through thought-provoking coverage. What makes this series different from other environmental programs is that it links the sciences with economics, politics, geography and history - an interdisciplinary approach recommended by the National Science Education standards for teaching environmental issues.

Each episode of Journey to Planet Earth features four to five thematically related stories from different geographic regions and that feature stories about people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Journey to Planet Earth can lead students to a deeper kind of inquiry, one that is an investigation of their personal relationship to the environment and, hopefully, the recognition that individuals can help their countries and communities cope with serious environmental threats.

Next Science Café features Obesity: learn the latest in weight research

The next Science Café @ Cook Library for the spring series will be Monday, February 21, 2011 from 6-7:30 p.m. The topic of conversation will be “Obesity” by Dr. Kathy Yadrick, Professor and Chair of the department of Nutrition and Food Systems.

As Americans grapple with ever-increasing waistlines, science is looking at the biology behind the compulsion to eat. What exactly makes some people weigh 350 pounds and others 150? Researchers have discovered a chemical in your brain proven to regulate body weight, but can pinpointing a “fat gene” signal the road to a remedy?

University Libraries present the exhibit, Baghdad Beyond the Wire

The University of Southern Mississippi Museum of Art and University Libraries present the exhibit, Baghdad Beyond the Wire, from January 27-March 2, 2011. Lt. David Holland, a native Mississippian on assignment as a military engineer in Iraq, was stirred by the images of the civilians negotiating their daily lives in the neighborhoods of Baghdad. The lieutenant carried with him a rifle and a Nikon on his excursions and brought back home a moving document of the Iraqi people during wartime. Baghdad Beyond the Wire showcases Holland’s photographs in two campus locations: the Gallery at Cook Library and the Museum of Art, where sculptures by Claudia DeMonte will also be on display. All are invited to an opening reception in the Museum of Art, January 27 at 4:00.

Spring Science Café Series at Cook Library Gearing Up!

This semester’s first Science Café @Cook Library is next Monday, January 24, 2011 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. It will feature a discussion on Digital Art Authentication led by Dr. Jan Siesling, art historian and the director of Southern Miss’s Museum of Art. Dr. Siesling is a Van Gogh expert and has worked at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. He has written a book on Van Gogh and organized an important show on Van Gogh's friend, painter Anthon van Rappard.

Vincent van Gogh has inspired several talented artists to turn their hands to forgery. Can computers be used to identify which works are really his? To find out, NOVA scienceNOW commissioned an expert to make a meticulous copy of a Van Gogh painting, and then challenged three different computer teams to find the imitation in a group that included five genuine Van Goghs. Can digital scans plus clever algorithms unmask the fake?

Held in the Starbucks coffee shop at Cook Library, The Science Café series offers those with minimal or no background in science the chance to meet and discuss scientific issues in layman’s terms in a relaxed social setting. A member of the Southern Miss faculty shares his or her expertise at each session with a presentation and short NOVA video. Admission is free and open to the public.
