University Libraries are hosting a summer reading program during the month of July for children of Southern Miss students, faculty, and staff. Children will be encouraged to read books from a provided list and at the conclusion of the program, prizes will be awarded based on number of books read. This program is a wonderful way for children to keep and improve their reading skills over the summer holiday.

The Curriculum Materials Center in Cook Library and the Curriculum Lab at the Gulf Coast Library are home to a wide array of children’s and young adult literature, textbooks, educational board games and kits, media, and more.
Changes to Cook Library Reserves

In an effort to enhance the availability of reserve materials to students, Cook Library is making a change in the processing and handling of photocopied materials placed on Reserve. Beginning in the summer 2009 semester, all photocopies or PDF’s submitted for Reserves will be entered as an eReserve only, eliminating the processing of paper copies and eliminating the check out/in from the Circulation Desk. This change will allow students to access eReserves 24 hours a day, as well as reduce the supplies needed to process the paper copies and eliminate several staff processing steps. It also means that eReserves will be available to the students a bit sooner than in the past. The hard copy provided will be kept on file for the rare occasion that the integrated library system becomes unavailable.

University Libraries Announcement Regarding RefWorks

University Libraries regret to announce the University’s subscription to RefWorks (www.RefWorks.com) will not be renewed for fiscal year 2009/10. Access to the Web-based citation and bibliography management system will expire on June 30, 2009. Although the Libraries were excited to introduce this new service in 2008/09, RefWorks has been used by only 3% of the Southern Miss community. With apologies to individuals using RefWorks, the low level of usage does not warrant continued support of this service in this period of budget reductions.

Current users will be sent an e-mail message containing instructions for exporting citations from RefWorks. Users are advised to export their references before June 30, 2009, to avoid any loss of data. University Libraries will continue to offer technical assistance to users through the remainder of the subscription period. Technical assistance is also available directly from RefWorks.

Please direct questions or comments concerning the cancellation of this service to Tisha Zelner, Head of Information Services, at tisha.zelner@usm.edu or 601.266.6170.

The film follows the campaign of a 29-year-old woman running for a State Senate seat in New York. Interviews and commentary by notable women from the right and left of the political spectrum are intercut into the narrative. The documentary explores the power of stereotypes in society and asks the question: if women represent a majority of the population why don't more of them hold political office?

Hattiesburg Remembers the Freedom Summer of 1964

Many scholars believe that there are few periods of American History which have had as profound an impact as the Civil Rights Movement. That time in American History can be relived through a stunning display of original photographs from photographer Herbert Randall, Jr. These photographs, taken during Freedom Summer in 1964, capture the events, lives and emotions of Hattiesburg during the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. These photographs will be displayed as Hattiesburg Remembers the Freedom Summer of 1964 exhibit at the historic Hattiesburg Train Depot in downtown Hattiesburg. The exhibit is sponsored by VISITHATTIESBURG, the University of Southern Mississippi Libraries, the African-American Military History Museum and the City of Hattiesburg and will run from February 4th-28th.

We feel that this exhibit is a testament to the courage of African-Americans during those difficult times, said Rick Taylor, executive director of VISITHATTIESBURG. We hope everyone will visit the exhibit to learn the history behind these photographs and experience a sense of pride in the role Hattiesburg played during this important period of American History.

In the spring of 1964, Herbert Randall Jr., a talented, young African and Native American photographer, had been awarded a fellowship for creative photography. He would go on to spend a summer in Hattiesburg photographing the Civil Rights Movement. His photographs were used by the Associated Press, United Press International, Black Star and various television outlets.

The photographs paint a vivid portrait of the Civil Rights Movement in Hattiesburg, and they include images of voter registration canvassing, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, Freedom Schools, the Free Southern Theatre, and a picnic at the home of Vernon Dahmer.

For his work, Randall was awarded the Creative Artist's Public Service Grant for Photography and has had his photographs appear in exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and other notable museums. His photographs are permanently represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, and the Library of Congress. A large collection of them are held at The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries in Hattiesburg.

The Hattiesburg Remembers the Freedom Summer of 1964 exhibit is free to the public and will be open Wednesday - Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m.-4p.m.

Vintage Scholastic Book Club

If you attended elementary school in the 1960s or 1970s you might remember participating in the Scholastic Book Club. Every couple of months, you would get a small catalog consisting of descriptions of paperbacks that were available for purchase. Most books only cost .60 or .90 each, and in several weeks the boxes of books would be delivered to class.

Collecting vintage Scholastic Book Club paperbacks has become a favorite pastime of nostalgic baby boomers. During the month of January, a selection of books from the Scholastic series will be on display in the Gulf Coast Library on the Long Beach campus. You are invited to drop in and see if the titles displayed bring back any memories!
