Welcome to another promising and exciting edition of weekly buzz, your favourite newsbit only here in 'AMLSNLand '.
What ado about conference days? Can we continue to act the same way and expect different results? Some people thinking out of the box are coming up with fresh ideas on reducing the number of days for AMLSN AGM/ Annual Conference. Intense debate may spring up on this subject as soon as the proponents have their way.

The past week has experienced intense political activities as more aspirants line up for one post or the other in the next leadership election of AMLSN coming up in Kaduna.
On the academic tuff, series of CPD workshop has been lined up and others done as State branches, chapters/units fall over themselves to improve the lot of their members.

As the March ending deadline for practicing licence approaches, issues surrounding delay continue to attract members' attention and promises to be interesting and intrigueing as the days go by. The quality of services by the regulating body has been generating mixed feelings in recent time.

As subtle as the choice of the date for the next AGM is, it has continue to command attention from stakeholders who think the November date proposed is a hoax. What will happen?

It was a long journey but there seems to be hopeful light at the end of the tunnel for BMLS degree at Unilorin as the V.C. makes it a priority.

Public Health Lecture At Asaba: Covenant 'Varsity Partners AMLSN On Malaria

The annual public health lecture of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) holds at Asaba, February 22nd-24th, 2017.
The lecture is a partnership with the Covenant University, Otta which will be chaired by Prof. Louis Egwari of the Biotechnology Department of the University.
The lecture will also attract three credit units for Medical Laboratory Scientists on continuous professional development (CPD).

Okara in his address praised the organizational prowess of cellular pathology scientists in Nigeria and urged other specializations in MLS to form such technical bodies to promote knowledge and capacity building. Important academicians at the event include Prof. Okechi Obioma, Prof. Charles Onyenekwe, Prof. Godwin Avwioro, Vice President of SCPSN, Dr. Ashi Robert, AMLSN 2nd Vice President, Abuja AMLSN chairman, Mr. Ndubuisi Ebitea, Dr. Cashmier Infeanyi, Mr. Igwe, and représentative of AMLSN President, Mr. Soji Billyrose. Day 2 At The SCPSN COnference, National Hospital, Abuja.

The second day kicked off with participant's registration. Lectures lined up for the day include:
1. Theory and Practice Of Analyticals In IHC By Mrs. Badirat Lawal
2. Antibody Optimization and Validation For IHC By Dr. Martins Infeanyi Chukwu
3. IHC Slide staining, ER, PR, HER-2, GFAP and Cytokeratins 7, 18 by. Mr. Jonathn Madukwe
4. Normal Histology of The Breast:By Mr. Sunday Igwe

In the first lecture delivered by Mr. Benard Solomon on behalf of Mrs. Badirat Lawal who was unavoidably absent, a memory lane on the history of IHC staingn was well laid out followed by different types of methods for antigen-antibody staining, advances made, challenges of IHC, standardization, the Nigerian situation, future prospects and need for expansion of undergraduate training in IHC including post-graduate taining in Nigerian Universities, a task seen as not impossible.
Dr. Martins in his lecture reviewed the basic immunology of antigen-antibody reactions, validation, verification, standardization and optimization. He emphasized the opportunities for in-country production of antibodies and detection kits.
In his own lecture, Mr. Igwe took the audience round basic histology of the female mammary gland.
He also touched normal histology lactating breast, menopausal breast, trans-sexual breast, hormone induces breast and aging breast.
He gave good habits in keeping healthy breast and harped on the need for regular breast examination.
Two companies made product presentations viz DCL and Biorapid diagnostics.

Mr. Godwin Ihimekpen, the Executive Secratary, AMLSN was also present on the second day where he announced that the AMLSN E-learning platform will launch a new course in IHC before the end of the year. The representative ofAMLSN President, Soji Billyrose also
joined participants to enjoy the lectures and hands-on training.
The day's lecture ended with special prayers for the President of the Society, Pa. Joseph Ogunwuyi who is currently hospitalized in Lagos.

The biomedical day celebration comes up every April of the year. The Nigerian Medical Laboratory Scientists in 2016 stepped up the publicity for the event as they aligned with the patient in line with the years chosen slogan.

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown as things aren't looking good for the Nigerian ministry of Health over its parochial sacking of the Registrar/CEO of the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria, Prof. Anthony Emeribe. The communication of the relief from the post was conveyed in a letter signed by the Director of Hospital services, Dr. Osinubi on behalf of the Minister of Health.
Many onlookers are smelling rat as there is never a smoke without fire.

Town Planner Supports MLSCN On NICN Judgement
The victory of the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria over the Medical Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has started gaining public support following the publication of the judgement recently in Nigerian dailies.

Drama At MLSCN: Emeribe Hands Over To Okoro While FMOH Appoints Omotuyi
Drama and intrigues cum clash of interest continue to trail the recent sack of Prof. 'Tony Emeribe as CEO/Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria. Emeribe handed over to Dr. Lawrena Okoro as the most senior Director while according to the FMOH, records show that Mrs. Omotuyi is the most senior hence her official appointment as acting Registrar.

With less information emanating at the labour front, all attention seems to be focused on MLSCN and its perceivedmisdeamenors by some MLS who has fallen victim of the 'harsh' operational milleu of the Council led by erudite Professor of Haematology, 'Tony Emeribe. Week after week, forumites continue to score MLSCN low on the way the regulatory body has been treating MLS who visits the Organization either at the HQs or the regional offices to make payment.

Concerned MLS has been complaining of the non issuance of annual practicing license months after making payment. It is on this premise a voice among the victims, Izu Ilechukwu cried out in a recent post that 'MLSCN Is Frustrating Us'.

For another complainant, Adewole Moses, the caption 'MLSCN Has Detained My 2013 and 2014 Licence' is more appropriate.

Tantrums thrown at the MLSCN is not limited to the license issue. The collection of CPD fees without commensurate benefit is causing disenchantment among forumites who questioned MLSCN's moralty on monies collected from members without refund. This scenario is playing out according to the complainants in the midst of skyrocketing unemployment rate among MLS in Nigeria. They wondered why MLSCN collects the highest licensing fee when compared to other regulatory bodies. At the time of going to press, MLSCN has yet to respond to the posts by concerned forumites on this burning issue.

Private practitioners has their own share of the tantrums as it affects the unemployment of young graduates in Nigeria. They have been accused of selling the profession to school cert holders and other biological science graduates for selfish reasons. One of the forumites, Ezugwu Jonathan says 'Private Practitioners Are Killing This Profession'. How true is this assertion? ALLMEDLAB: Before we get into question time, what can you say to Medical Laboratory Scientists nationwide to raise their morale vis-a-vis the postponement of the national conference?
Dr. Bassey: Section 16(iii) provides inter alia “An AGM and Scientific Conference of the Association shall be held in August of every year or at such other time as the General Meeting or National Executive Council may decide” absolutely this is what our constitution says and nobody can controvert it except we first amend the constitution. The NEO has the capacity to resolve the issue of shift in date. I see it as a constitutional responsibility that the NEO should be able to handle squarely, the constitution has clearly given them the responsibility. I will ask the body of medical laboratory across Nigeria to be calm. On my part I will appeal to colleagues to take it in good faith and see it as a sacrifice.

ALLMEDLAB: Thank you sir. Now tell us about Bassey Enya Bassey.
Dr. Bassey : I am Bassey Enya Bassey, a Medical Laboratory Scientist; I obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Benin, Benin City in 2003, M. Sc from the University of Jos, Jos in 1999 and B.MLS from the University of Calabar, Calabar in 1991, WAEC from School of Arts & Science, Uyo in 1984 and Primary School Leaving Certificate – Government Primary School, Egboronyi in 1979.
I have gained twenty-two years experience in the Nigerian health sector, over ten years in the United Nations System, experience in medical laboratory management, epidemiology, disease surveillance notification and response. In the World Health Organization, I have worked in over 35 states in Nigeria and two countries.
I possess exceptional ability to direct complex projects from conception to maturity.   I am goal-oriented with strong leadership capabilities. I am also well organized, highly motivated, and detail-directed problem solver.   Not to say the least, I am an excellent team player with proven interpersonal and communication skills. Currently, I am an Associate Professor in Epidemiology & Public Health Microbiology, University of Calabar, Calabar, Cross River State.
I am married to Amaka, a pretty lady from Imo state and the marriage is blessed with two children.

ALLMEDLAB: Huge portfolio you have there, but what are your contributions to Medical Laboratory Science and the Association of Medical Laboratory Science of Nigeria?

Dr. Bassey : President, NUMELSSA (NIMELSSA) -1990, Chairman, AMLSN FCT Branch -1996-2005, National Financial Secretary of AMLSN; 2000-2004, National Secretary of AMLSN,2004-2008.
I was a member of Technical Working Group on the formulation of National Human Resources for Health Policy in Nigeria. I was also a member of the Expert Working Group (Sub-Committee), on the formulation of National Medical Laboratory Services Policy for Nigeria.
On my contributions to the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, I purchased and donated a parcel of land to the national association, initiated, nurtured and ensured the commencement of internship programme in the FCT, provided based-line data for the 2008 job evaluation across selected centres.
On the professional front, I was a member of the Committee on the production the primary draft of Act 11, 2003, a member of the Committee on the reviewed the final draft of Act 11, 2003.
I also produced the draft AMLSN Constitution 2004.
I was Secretary, Constitution review committee 2008, member, NOC, Annual Scientific Conference, Abia, 2001, member, NOC, Annual Scientific Conference, Delta, 2002, Chairman, NOC, Annual Scientific Conference, Gateway 2003, Chairman, NOC, Annual Scientific Conference, Abuja 2004, Chairman, NOC, Annual Scientific Conference, Garden City 2006 and member, NOC, Annual Scientific Conference, Bauchi 2008.
In nearly three decades, our profession has faced one of the greatest challenges in the history of professional development and growth. I recognize that nowhere in modern history has any profession encountered the obstacles and landmines as medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria. These landmines range from the struggle for the commencement of degree programme in the mid-sixties, to the enactment of Act 11, 2003, Implementation of several approved circulars, Job evaluation, Scheme of service, Medical Laboratory Science Policy, Human Resources for Health Policy.
Today in the health sector, our scheme of service remain the only that has not been published comprehensively. I possess inert capacity to face these challenges.

ALLMED LAB: Sir people are saying you are not staying in Abuja; how will you combine it with your work when voted in?
Dr. Bassey : As already related in previous narration, I have worked outside Abuja in nearly 12 years now. I was voted as National Secretary in 2004 about the same time I joined the united nations system in Nigeria.   It is instructive to inform you that in the period 2004-2008, I attended all national executive council meetings as it was called then; I was the “Secretary” of the constitution review committee which sat in Ilorin, Abeokuta and Calabar; their work span over six months. I also served in the think –thank committee as “Secretary”.   This committee had the inaugural meeting in Abakaliki on the 21st July, 2006, 16th August 2006 in TOG Hotel, Port Harcourt; 2nd of June, 2007; Hilltop Hotel, Jos; 30th June 2007, Nelrose Hotel Asaba and 7th of July; Calabar, Cross River State.
I also served in the inter- ministerial committee that developed the national resources for human health policy in Nigeria.   Again, this committee sat severally in Abuja, and Ilorin. We also collected data across Nigeria in the period under review. I was also a member of the technical committee that developed the national medical laboratory policy which sat for two week s in Shiroro Hotel, Minna.
The volume of time one has is meaningless if you cannot manage your time efficiently. In the national Assembly, I made several presentations concerning the National Health Bill, Surgeon General Bill, Federal Ambulance Authority Bill, Federal Medical Centre Bill, and the National Reproductive Health Bill. This has amply demonstrated my availability in all ramifications. Even in the current NEO, I have attended most of their meetings. How else can one show commitment to his primary constituent?
Prof DE Agbonlahor, AO Emeribe, MF Useh all lived outside Abuja, each of them recorded remarkable achievement. The bench mark here is the capacity you have.

ALLMEDLAB: Sir as a WHO staff, will you be able to leave your job when you have AMLSN assignment the same day and time?

Dr. Bassey : At WHO, am a civil servant just like any other civil servants. The only difference is that we in WHO are international civil servants, and the same rule applies.
ALLMEDLAB: Dr, one of the problems in the health sector in Nigeria is decree 10 of 1985; sir if vote in, how would you proffer a solution to this?
Dr. Bassey :   This decree is the greatest injustice in the health care system in Nigeria. If elected, I would galvanize other Health Professional Associations to push for the repeal of this law, to allow hospital administration in the hands of trained managers. This is expected to save our hospitals the inefficiency seen presently in the management of these Institutions. It will also allow health professionals to concentrate on their areas of primary responsibility and competency.
I will advocate for the abolishing of the three directorates provided for in the Decree to allow health professionals rise to the position of Directors in the Teaching and federal medical centres and Hospitals to enhance professionalism.
We shall pursue the interpretation of the word medically “qualified”. Mr Obi is already in court in this regards. My administration will support and see the court process to a logical end. The decree has overall resulted in the following ills in our health care system.
− Overall life expectancy in Nigeria at birth is 46.7 years; infant mortality rate is 86 per 1000 live birth while maternal mortality ratio is 840 per 100,000 live births. This is according to the World Health Statistics. Besides, the continued neglect of the importance of addressing public health issues would make matters worse for poor Nigerians, most of who are at the receiving end.
− The major public health challenges Nigeria faces are infectious diseases, sewage disposal, health insurance, water supply, air pollution, noise pollution, environmental radiation, housing, solid waste disposal, disaster management, MLS-population ratio, population-bed ratio, population per health facility, payment system/methods, utilization of care, access to care, improper co-ordination of donor funds, maternal mortality, infant mortality, health financing, poor sanitation and hygiene, incessant doctors strike, disease surveillance, smoking of tobacco, brain drain, rapid urbanization, non-communicable diseases, alcohol abuse, environment degradation, road traffic injuries, etcetera.
There are grey areas that may require amendment, there is no strong provision on disciplinary measure to be taken against deviant members, and our electoral laws are not strong to promote equity, fairness and justice. There are no bye laws etc.

ALLMEDLAB: If you become President, how would you steer the ship towards empowering young Medical Laboratory Scientists?
Dr. Bassey : Since 2000 when Professor AO Emeribe initiated the first memo requesting the implementation of EEP, we have made tremendous progress, today, we have achieved EEP for intern medical laboratory scientists, and my administration will pursue global application/implementation of what has been achieved for the interns, by that I mean to say that all medical laboratory scientists must benefit from EEP.
These will form the main thrust of my administration; I will take necessary steps to ensure that they play a critical role in policies direction and decisions that would enhance the growth and development of the profession.   I will develop YMLS into a major technical arm of AMLSN. The first practical step is to fully pay for the registration of YMLS with corporate affair commission. I will robustly fund her activities and position her to be able to effectively discharge the enormous, critical and specific responsibilities that NEO will give them from time to time. I will systematically engage the YMLS and form a synergy that will ensure turn around in the fortunes of AMLSN in many more thematic areas in the next three years. I have also developed a package that will enhance job creation

ALLMEDLAB:   If elected, how do u intend to stop this scenario where job adverts are made in federal Tertiary Health Institutions and MLS is always left out; Is MLS not going into extinction like that?
Dr. Bassey   We are going to systematically engage the FMoH, in the area of job creation using scientific and evidence based data.

ALLMEDLAB: How do you intend to carry all Medical Laboratory Scientists/Technologists including those working under university?Dr. Bassey : We have in the past worked for the unification of MLS in Nigeria, that is why if you see Act 11 of 2003, the dichotomy has been bridged. Now there is no BMLS nor AIMLS in our dictionary.
Capacity building in the area of mentorship, workshop, training including international sponsorship in rare areas will be our mainstay.

ALLMEDLAB: If voted in how would you bring harmony in the private sector?
Dr. Bassey : The comprehensive implementation of NHIS will be addressed. This is the area those in private practice will be captured.
ALLMEDLAB: How would you stop microbiologist, biochemist s and others from doing I T in the Medical Laboratory?

Dr. Bassey : We will pursue full implementation of provisions of Act 11, 2003. If done, we’ll succeed in stopping infiltration to the Medical Laboratory.

ALLMEDLAB: W e were made to understand that TETFUND is sponsoring our journal but we are surprised that they still produced 2012 edition in 2014. What is your take on this?Dr. Bassey : We are going to re-profile this journal to make it meet the ever increasing challenges. We will pursue online manuscript submission, processing, review and publication and also providing adequate logistics and financial support to the Editorial board. We’ll engage the services of a young medical laboratory scientist who has competence in ICT to join the editorial team of the journal.

ALLMEDLAB: Sir, how do you intend to repackage the outlook of medical laboratory science in Nigeria in terms of public engagement?

Dr. Bassey : My pledge is to dedicate my time, energy and resources towards building an institution that would be formidable, an Institution that would stand and be counted; one that will face the challenges of the 21st century and bring about positive reforms in the health sector.   I will work assiduously in six thematic areas of legislation, income generation, establishment matters, job creation for young scientists, social-welfare services, public relations, capacity building and training.
In truth, the development of medical laboratory science is still a work in progress and we are challenged everyday to keep building in spite of the various obstacles that we face. Our strength has been in the quality of leadership in the past years; from Prof. DE Agbonlahor, Dr. NN Shidali, Prof. AO Emeribe, Prof. MF Useh, and Mr. R Manason to Dr. GC Okara; these were great men who adequately protected the profession from external aggression. In the past 22 years, I have systematically and deliberately build my capacity under the tutelage of Professor AO Emeribe and Professor MF Useh, as branch chair of FCT. I also had the opportunity of working under Dr. NN Shidali. I will by the grace of GOD work hard to make a proud son; work hard to surpass previous achievements.

ALLMEDLAB: If not voted in will you still support anybody that come on board to achieve all these?

Dr. Bassey : We are one family, election will not divide us, the strength I have is to support anybody that wins this election. Power belongs to the people. I will wait for the outcome of the election. I know I stand to be the best if you we put together my experience, exposure, contributions and innovations we have introduced.

ALLMEDLAB:   How do you intend to carry Medical Laboratory Technician and Medical Laboratory Assistant along?
Dr. Bassey : I intend to create a platform for Medical Laboratory Technician and Medical Laboratory Assistant, that will encourage robust interaction.

ALLMEDLAB: What’s your dream about DMLS ?
Dr. Bassey : MLS. D is the brain child of Professor AO Emeribe and myself. We had visited the NUC to discuss modalities for the take off of MLS.D. We will pursue it to a logical conclusion.

ALLMEDLAB: WHO where you work as a state coordinator employs high med lab standards, how will you use your vast experience to improve med.lab practice in Nigeria?

Dr. Bassey : WHO is supporting the Federal Government to build laboratory capacity in Nigeria. The mobile Ebola diagnostic laboratory was donated by WHO. l

ALLMEDLAB: What will you do concerning our secretariat to have a permanent place?
Dr. Bassey : I will institute phased development of a National Secretariat for the Association using the parcel of land purchased and donated to the Association during my tenure as Branch Chairman of FCT.   Provisions would be made for a conference hall, guest rooms, offices, internet facilities, etc in the first phase.

The topical issue in the mind of concerned Medical Laboratory Scientists is the coming election to decide who mounts the various vacant posts in the leadership of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria.

ALLMEDLAB:

Tell us who Odionyenma Uche is.

Odionyenma Uche I hail from Owerri, Imo State and I attended my Primary School in Lagos and Secondary in Owerri. For my Tertiary education, I attended Polythechnic Nekede, Owerri, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile - Ife. SMLS OAUTHC Ile - Ife, SMLT, UCH Ibadan, FUT Akure and AAU EkPOMA and currently, University of Benin. I hold B.Sc., MSc., MBA, FMLSCN, and a Doctoral candidate. I am presently on he staff of Ondo State Ministry of Health as Director, Medical Laboratory Services as well as Deputy Provost, College of Health Technology, Akure.

Odionyenma Uche Odionyenma Uche is a certified Medical laboratory Scientist with bias in Microbiology and Haematology/BGS with great passion for the total emancipation of our great profession. I'm also a CLSI and ASLM certified Laboratory Assessor/Auditor.

ALLMEDLAB: An indigene of Imo State as a director in Ondo State. That's interesting. Tell us how you achieved that?

Odionyenma Uche Well, after the mandatory One year NYSC programme, I was given an automatic employment by the Ondo State Government given my exceptional and exemplary performance during the National Service year. This employment's informed by the fact that I received both the Akure LGA NYSC Honours Award and Ondo State NYSC Award as well as a nominee for IBB Presidential Award.

ALLMEDLAB:

I know you have served in the NEO, what motivated you to stage a comeback and push in for the post of VP 1?

Odionyenma Uche My decision to run is informed by my passionate desire to see Medical Laboratory Science profession become everything it is capable of, reaching all of its potentials as a first line Profession. I'm also passionate about defending the rights, privileges and welfare of members of our great Association.

ALLMEDLAB:

Tell us about your contributions to the profession and your manifesto.

Odionyenma Uche Yes, I served twice as a National Public Relations Officer under the regime of Dr. (now Professor) Francis Useh. Given my credible performance, It is with deep sense of humility that I once again offer myself to serve in a higher office of National 1st Vice President. My desire for the Office of the first National President is to provide me with a wider latitude as well as bring my experience to bear in serving our great Association with a renewed vigour.

ALLMEDLAB:

Yes your profile seems to be rich but what has been your achievement in the growth of AMLSN?

Odionyenma Uche Well, my contributions to the Profession are legion but let me start by saying that I am one of the fore runners for the total Liberation of Medical Lab. Scientists in Ondo State. I single handedly wrote the position paper on employment which was submitted to State Government to check the engagement of non-professionals in our hospital Laboratories. I also engaged the then Permanent Secretary, Hospital Management Board with a superior argument as to why newly employed MLS should start from GL 09 as against GL 08 which appeared on the then Scheme of service. I was also part of the state team that successfully fought for the implementation of our scheme of service which explains why Ondo State at a point in time had six Directors, Medical Laboratory Services. The highest in the Federation. I have served Ondo Branch as a correspondence secretary- 2002 and State Public Relations Officer-2004. I have served AMLS National twice a s National Public Relations Officer. I Chaired Organizing Committees for ENEC-2005 and Ondo branch maiden seminar/workshop-2006. I also chaired National Organizing Commitees AGM/Scientific Conference hosted by Kwara State-2007. I chaired the fund raising committe for the AMLSN Ondo Secretarial building and presently chairman fund raising Committee for AMLSN Ondo 2014. I created a website for our great Association during my tenure as national PRO. I can go on and on but let me stop so far.

ALLMEDLAB:

I observed your opponent in this post are also distinguished comrades vis-a-vis service to AMLSN locally & nationally. Sir, what do u think gives u an advantage over others in this contest?

Odionyenma Uche What gives me an advantage is my experience, drive, charisma and fearlessness. My service to AMLSN started well over 12 years.There is no doubt about the fact that experience is key to delivery in office. If given the mandate I now seek, the innovations I have in mind are:

1. Initiate a mechanism for vigilance by introducing legislative watch units at both National and State levels to among others guard against bills that are detrimental to the practice of our great profession.

2. Articulate a suitable strategy for empowering our Young Medical Laboratory Scientists Association and make it more proactive

3. Ensure that we lift our eyes towards the challenges that awaits us as stake holders in the health sector.

MedLabNews: Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Aliyu Samuel: I'm Aliyu Samuel Abdulmumuni, and you may like to know that am passionate about public engagement with medical lab science. I work as medical laboratory scientist and I volunteer with the Royal College of Pathologists of the UK as a regional coordinator for National Pathology Week

MedLabNews: That's interesting. You won and award recently. Can you tell us what it was about and when?

Aliyu Samuel: I feel very honored to have been recognized by the African Society for Laboratory Medicine as an outstanding young laboratory professional. The award represents an important initiative for the promotion of young laboratory professionals as it not only increases our passion for what we do but to encourage professionalism in our chosen careers

MedLabNews: Was there any nomination process you were subjected to or was there a competitive process you undertook before the reputable body chose you as the outstanding Young Laboratory Professional? Can you tell our readers what actually transpired?

Aliyu Samuel: I think they had their own assessment standard.
It's strictly based on merit. In fact we were just four in
the program, myself and two Ethiopians and a lady from the
U.S. Also, they would like to see previous articles written
by the applicant to assess the applicant's
fluency and scientific knowledge

MedLabNews: Can you tell us what the communications Internship is about and how other young Medical Laboratory Scientists who are interested can participate?

Aliyu Samuel: I think it is important to mention that the communications internship
position is unpaid part-time work. The essence of the internship is to train young
professionals to be part of a network of field writers.
As Interns we assisted with the development of web-based news articles, and promotional materials to advance
the overall ASLM mission and ASLM2020

MedLabNews: Can you tell us what the communications Internship is about and how other young Medical Laboratory Scientists who are interested can participate?

Aliyu Samuel: I think it is important to mention that the communications internship position is unpaid part-time work. The essence of the internship is to train young professionals to be part of a network of field writers. As Interns we assisted with the development of web-based news articles, and promotional materials to advance the overall ASLM mission and ASLM2020 strategic vision objectives. Content was typically oriented toward laboratory-related issues with an emphasis on public health and/or scientific impact. MedLabNews: What is the structure of the training; is it possible for those already in government employment to participate?

Aliyu Samuel:The program is well structured to accommodate any cadre of professional but there are rules of engagement which of course is articulated clearly when applying

MedLabNews: You also said you are a volunteer for the Royal College of Pathology, United Kingdom. How can Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nigeria who are interested in volunteerism enroll for the program?
The program is about public engagement with pathology, creating awareness about the important roles played by laboratory professionals in patients care. MedLabNews: Now can you tell us what you are working on currently?

Aliyu Samuel: I am currently working to see that there is the establishment of an African laboratory professionals week. A proposal is already under review by the African Society for Laboratory Medicine in conjunction with the African Union. I believe in the coming months there should be some positive outcomes

MedLabNews: Lastly what future do you foresee for Medical Laboratory Science in Nigeria?

Aliyu Samuel: The medical laboratory profession has been an ever-changing field. Though we've being through thorny parts but things are getting bright. Today, we have many MLS taking expanded scientific roles and at the forefront of research and innovation.This is very important for the future of the profession. Again, I must say that there is need to empower young Medical Laboratory Scientist professionals through mentorship. We need to give them a sense of calling and a sense of purpose. Learning has to be at the heart of everything and our hospital settings has to have the optimal conditions for learning. Public engagement can also have a positive impact on Medical Laboratory Science and will be a critical part of our future.
