Deadline Extended: ALAO Continuing Education Grant

Great news! The following announcement was sent via the ALAO List; an extension for applicants wishing to apply for the continuing education grant is now available.

The Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) Continuing Education Grant is awarded each year to support the cost of participating in professional development opportunities. Current ALAO members are eligible to apply for funds to defray the costs of attending any library-related educational opportunity occurring during the 2012 calendar year.

The ALAO Professional Development Committee (PDC) will select the application(s) that best explain how the grant will further the applicant’s professional development. The amount of money available for the 2012 Continuing Education Grant Program is $2,500. These funds may be awarded to one individual or divided among two or more top-ranked applicants. The PDC will take into consideration the amount of funding the applicant’s employer will provide for the request, as well as what the employer provided during the past fiscal year. The PDC will notify award recipients and will arrange payment. Within sixty days of the educational event, the recipient must submit a brief report to the PDC confirming proof of attendance.

Please note that awards equal to or greater than $600 USD are subject to taxation and will be reported to the Internal Revenue Service. Recipients of awards equal to or greater than $600 USD must provide their social security number to the ALAO fiscal agent prior to disbursement of award monies.Please complete the online application for the grant at http://www.alaoweb.org/events.

IES Report: Academic Libraries 2010

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) recently released Academic Libraries: 2010 First Look.

The Academic Libraries: 2010 First Look summarizes services, staff, collections, and expenditures of academic libraries in 2- and 4-year, degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Findings Include:

Academic libraries held approximately 158.7 million e-books and about 1.8 million electronic reference sources and aggregation services at the end of FY 2010.

Academic libraries spent approximately $152.4 million for electronic books, serial backfiles, and other materials in FY 2010. Expenditures for electronic current serial subscriptions totaled about $1.2 billion.

During FY 2010, some 72 percent of academic libraries reported that they supported virtual reference services.

Academic libraries reported 88,943 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff working in academic libraries during the fall of 2010.

The Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) recognizes the need to encourage and spotlight pioneering individuals, particularly those who offer their colleagues new and innovative practices that can be adapted and implemented in their home institutions. As such, ALAO’s Distance Learning Interest Group (DLIG) is excited to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the 2012 “Distance Learning Visionary”.

Benefits of winning include:

Honor of being named the 2012 Distance Learning Visionary.
Recognition at the 2012 ALAO Annual Conference Luncheon, as well as on the ALAO Website, ALAO Newsletter, & the DLIG Blog.
Reward of $150 - a presentation grant for sharing distance learning strategies, applications, or research with attendees of the 2012 DLIG Spring Workshop. Please note that the funds are contingent upon the grantee presenting in person, remotely, or via pre-recorded session.

Nomination applications should include a 250-500 word essay that demonstrates the nominee’s contributions to e-learning, as well as a short presentation proposal that suggests what the nominee would share with colleagues striving to succeed in the technology-driven environment of online learning. Links to relevant supporting materials are encouraged; self and group nominations are permissible.

Kudos to BGSU Librarians Kathy Yoder and Nancy Down on the wonderful presentation! Nancy talked about the Browne Popular Culture Library she manages. I think I can safely say that we all thought her collections sound interesting. Kathy talked about popular crossover fiction (fiction popular with YAs and adults) in the CRC at BG, emphasizing that while the two departments may overlap some content, they are very different in nature and mission.

Popular Fiction in the Academic Library

Nancy Down (Bowling Green State University), Kathy Yoder (Bowling Green State University) Popular literature, such as the Harry Potter series and the Twilight Saga, are increasingly used in academic classes. Our presentation discusses how our Curriculum Resource Center supports the use of such materials as young adult reading and as teaching materials. Our Popular Culture Library archives the materials to document cultural history. We conclude with ideas on collaborations between our collections to promote popular literature in the academic library.

Special thanks to CMCIG chair Stephanie Bange for submitting a great CMCIG workshop wrap-up for the newsletter.

"The 2011 CMCIG Spring Workshop was held at Wright State University, in the Charles & Renate Frydman Educational Resource Center (ERC). Sixteen attendees listened intently and participated in the workshop, themed “Local Resources and Collaborations”. Stephanie Bange, Director of the ERC, gave an overview of audiobooks, their usefulness in the classroom, audiobook evaluation and awards. She shared some anecdotes about her recent experience as a member of the 2011 Odyssey Award Committee and gave everyone 5 audiobooks to add to their library’s collections. The group headed over to WSU’s Bolinga Center, the home of the Virginia Hamilton & Arnold Adoff Resource Center. There, Dr. Dana Murray Patterson explained the history of the resource center, allowing everyone access to the collection — reference materials, personal readings and books written by Hamilton and Adoff — used by Virginia Hamilton and Arnold Adoff to research information for their books. ThinkTV (Dayton area PBS station) Educational Projects and Services Manager Mary Anne Kirk talked about the free streaming video and teacher instructional materials available on local PBS websites. Such programs as “Our Ohio : Exploring Our Heritage” and “World War II : Exploring Your Local History”, streamed through ThinkTV, were highlighted. Mary Anne said that (hopefully) soon all the streaming programming available through individual PBS stations will be gathered into one umbrella website. A highlight of the tour of the ERC was the 3,000 item collection of the Dayton Holocaust Resource Center, available for loan to Ohio libraries through OhioLINK. In the afternoon, the group gathered at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, where we were given a docent-tour of the permanent exhibit “Prejudice & Memory” by Holocaust survivor Renate Frydman. CMCIG Workshop: Spring 2011

Many thanks to our workshop host, Stephanie Bange, Director of the Charles & Renate Frydman Educational Resource Center at Wright State University. We had a wonderful time discussing Audio books & The Odyssey Award, touring the Virginia Hamilton & Adoff Resource Center at the Bolinga Black Cultural Center at Wright State University, learning more about local PBS resources and touring the ERC at Wright State. A wonderful picnic lunch was followed by a tour of the "Prejudice and Memory" exhibit at the National Museum of the United States Air Force conducted by Renate Frydman, director of the Dayton Holocaust Resource Center.

ALAO RPC Research Grant - Round Two!

The ALAO RPC is very pleased to announce a second round of our Research Grant program for 2011. This is a special, one-time opportunity for our ALAO members to apply for up to $500 in research funding.

This second round will be a "lightning round" with completed grant applications due to the RPC chair by May 20, 2011. Awards will be announced by June 1, 2011. The awards can be applied to such research costs as data organization, hiring research assistants, and modest travel costs.

The Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) seeks to promote research. The ALAO Executive Board may award up to $500.00 to support and encourage research projects proposed by ALAO members. Both ongoing and new research projects are considered. Grants are intended to help in funding such incremental research costs as the organization of data, the hiring of interviewers or other assistants, charges for computer time, and modest travel costs associated with research. Grants may not be used for purchase of equipment. Grants are limited to investigations related to issues in libraries, librarianship, and information science and technology.

The ALAO Conference Planning Committee invites you to submit proposals for presentations, 25-minute spotlight sessions, or poster sessions that bring new ideas or approaches useful for academic libraries. This year’s conference theme, “ Constant Change, Constant Opportunity,” looks at the challenges facing academic libraries as budgetary, institutional, occupational, and technological changes cause us to reflect and adapt how we provide services to our users and communities.

Presentations may take the form of contributed papers, demonstrations, workshops, research, or panel discussions. Spotlight sessions can be “lightning round” style programs, multimedia slides, or other presentation techniques that cover a subject or issue that can be dealt with in a 25-minute time frame. Poster sessions should embrace the conference theme and present original ideas, innovative solutions to problems, library-related projects, or creative approaches to dealing with change in today’s academic libraries.

This year we have available both a Support Staff Presenter Grant and a Student Presenter Grant. Further details on both grants are available at the URLs above.
