Don't get scammed

More than 100 years ago the infamous salesman P.T. Barnum proclaimed, “There’s a sucker born every minute.”

If that’s the case, Barnum is likely rolling over in his grave,
frustrated that he can’t get out and take advantage of the many scams
targeting today’s folks.

Some of those scams have hit close to home – the most recent being
one in which a Brookings woman’s e-mail list was hijacked by a con
artist seeking money from unsuspecting friends and family members (see
story in the Nov. 7 Curry Coastal Pilot.)

Hardly a week goes by when this newspaper isn’t contacted by a
reader who received a highly suspicious e-mail or phone call. Local
authorities often contact us about scams and the Oregon Attorney
General’s Office regularly issues “Scam Alerts” to the media.

Veterans ‘Moving Wall’ bound for Brookings

The Moving Wall – a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veteran’s
Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. – will be at Brookings’ Azalea Park
this summer.

The Brookings City Council voted Monday to temporarily suspend park
hours and waive the city’s rental fee to allow the Veteran’s of Foreign
Wars Post 966 to bring the Moving Wall to Brookings from June 24 to 29.

“It’s an important moment for us who have not been able to see it in
person,” said Brookings City Councilor Dave Gordon, who served in
Vietnam as an Army captain.

The Moving Wall is inscribed with more than 58,000 names of those who died in the Vietnam conflict from 1959 to 1975.

Children first to get latest shipment of H1N1 vaccine

Vaccines for the H1N1 influenza have finally arrived in Curry County
in enough volume to start vaccinating the most vulnerable residents –
children.

The Curry County Health Department currently has 500 doses of H1N1
vaccine in stock and will hold a clinic Thursday at Riley Creek K-8 in
Gold Beach for students at that school. Notices were sent home with
Riley Creek students on Monday. It is up to each parent and child
whether they will receive the vaccine.

“We have some children who don’t want it, and some parents who don’t
want it for their children,” Curry County Health Director Georganne
Greene said Monday.

Students age 15 and older can sign for themselves, she said.

Gold Beach may hire two new policemen

GOLD BEACH – The city will likely hire one new police officer in
December and possibly hire another in January after City Administrator
Ellen Barnes told the City Council on Monday that she can find the
money in the city’s budget.

“I was charged with the task to find the funding,” Barnes told the
council. “There is one officer in that budget. I think there are two.”

Barnes gave a presentation which showed the city would need $72,714
to pay and equip two officers for the rest of the fiscal year, which
ends June 30, with one officer on board for seven months and the second
for six.

That assumes each officer would be paid $38,000 a year or $3,167 a month and would include up to $1,000 each as a signing bonus.

Oregon’s Dungeness crab season is looking good and is on schedule for the usual Dec. 1 opening.

Crab taken in Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife test pots in recent weeks proved abundant and full of meat.

“The crabs are in good shape and ready to harvest,” Oregon Dungeness
Crab Commission Executive Director Nick Furman said Tuesday.

“All that’s left now is to negotiate the price,” Furman said.

Veterans share war experiences with students

Sixth, seventh and eighth grade Azalea Middle School students
gathered in Jason Fulton’s classroom Monday to meet local veterans from
World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and to learn more about what they went
through during their service.

“I never talked about my experiences during Vietnam until about four years ago,” Sam Vitale told the students.

But on Monday he found himself sharing many of his experiences with curious students.

Vitale was drafted into the Army in 1967.

“I went to Vietnam when I was 20 years old,” Vitale said.

Lady Knights sneek out of town with win over the Bruins

Unfortunately for the Bruins, their second-round playoff game at
home Tuesday didn’t end the way they would have liked. For starters,
the Bruins are one and done in the 4A state playoff tournament after
losing to the North Valley Knights. Additionally, the 4-5 loss in a
shootout after 100 minutes of regulation and overtime play wasn’t the
kind of end Head Coach Cindy Babcock likes to see.

“No one ever wants a game to end in a shootout,” she said. “I’d say
win or lose it’s not a accurate depiction of the way the game was
played, but that’s the way the game goes.”

And so it goes for a team that recorded an impressive 9-1-2 regular season, but didn’t look it in the first half Tuesday.

It took most of the game but the Bruins got the only goal they
needed with eight minutes left in Tuesday’s second-round state playoff
game at Brookings-Harbor High School. Anthony Babb provided the score,
and in doing so assured his team a 1-0 victory over the visiting Henley
Hornets and at least one more game this season.

“We are very proud of (the Bruins),” Head Coach Pancho Garcia said. “And we’re excited for them.”

Proud of the way the Bruins withstood struggling in the first half,
according to Garcia, and excited that the team gets to take the next
step in a quest for the state title, a third round playoff game, at
home, against Cottage Grove.

Bruins win big in season finale at North Bend

Friday night at North Bend everything was working for the
Brookings-Harbor High School Bruins during their 39-22 win over the
Bulldogs. Offense was gobbling up huge chunks of yards, defense was
stingy when needed and the special teams made plays.

“That’s what we’ve been looking for,” Bruin Head Coach Vince Longo
said of all phases contributing. “We knew if we could get it together
we’d be successful.”

Contributing factor number one: an offense that chipped in three TDs
in the first half alone, all three of which were plays over 50 yards.

“It was based on execution,” Longo said. “But also on second effort from our backs. One person’s not going to bring them down.”

When you have two evenly matched teams, sometimes it simply comes
down to who makes the least mistakes. So Wednesday night, when the
Brookings-Harbor High School volleyball team made just a couple more,
it meant the end of their season and a four-game loss to the Banks
Braves; 21-25, 25-13, 19-25, 23-25.

“We made more errors than the other team,” said Bruin Head Coach Lori Cooper. “That’s why they won and we didn’t.”

Behind a few too many miscues, though, there was a solid performance from the Bruins in the first-round loss.

“The girls played hard,” Cooper said. “And (Nicole Watterson) had a monster game.”

Watterson’s 19 kills and 12 blocks led the team.

ODFW extends closure of Chetco; broodstock collection nearly done

Fish report for Oct. 30 through Nov. 6

It has often been said that those who fail to learn from the mistakes
of the past are doomed to repeat them. Ultimately, a recent decision
made by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will prevent the
aforementioned statement from being expressed regarding opening up the
river prematurely and will most likely serve as a template as far as
how to handle low river flows in the future.

I am sure that many of you have already received the news that the
Chetco River above the Highway 101 bridge will not be opening today as
previously planned but will remain closed until further notice, as was
recently disclosed in a Nov. 4 ODFW press release.

ODFW did not sprint to this decision in haste. They tiptoed into it
after a cautious, lucidly thought-out process. Not closing the Chetco
would have been a mistake – closing it was her salvation.
