The weather here in the Chi has gone from fall to summer in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, although most of my warm weather clothes are tucked away in storage, I did have the foresight to keep (aka didn't pack before the movers came) one of my favorite, most flower power suits with me.

I snapped a quick pic on my way out this morning.

p.s. I went to the beach for a lil bit yesterday and I already have a bit of a tan.

Anyway, the last time I wore this suit I wore your more basic black flats but this time I wanted to really amp up the fun of the look and rocked my pink oxfords.

While all the MAC Ruby Woo wearers are in major eye roll mode because RiRi Woo is so similar, I am too busy giving you extra pout to show it off because I never wore Ruby Woo or matte lipstick & I am loving it.

Truth be told, I have never been a big MAC fan (blasphemy to the diehard's ears, I know). I mean I have rocked a lipglass or two and used to live by the NC45 compact foundation but I haven't purchased either in years, although I did purchase one of those blogger collab colors but I didn't really care for it.

So while I would see girls rocking Ruby Woo and looking gorgeous, I wasn't drippin with excitement to go out and buy it.

But because I am a lover of red lipstick (I normally rock the chaos color from NYX), and when I went on the site 15 minutes before it was supposed to go on sale I was able to get a couple, I went with it.

This pic is the best one I could get that really shows how the color looks on me. My camera and I are still learning one another, so I snapped this with my iphone.

Now I have never done the matte lipstick thang before because I normally like a good amount of shine on my puckers.

Joe said that it looks like a red made for a black girl unlike my other red (side eye). And I must admit that after a 1/2 a day of wear, that I really dig this one and while it is matte, my lips don't feel dry at all oh and it smells really good.

So MAC has definitely caught my attention again after years and I may be making a visit to the counter to see what other matte lippies I can get into.

I love fragrance and over the years I have developed favorites that I always reach for but I think Spring is the perfect time to experiment and add fresh new scents to your suck 'em in perfume arsenal.

I've been really fortunate lately to be introduced to some fun, fabulous new fragrances and one of those is Ivanka Trump Fragrance.

In this video, Ivanka notes that her inspiration was a strong, powerful yet feminine working woman and I think that is a perfect way of describing it.

It's sweet without being too sweet, which is a big thing for me, because I am kinda fragrance sensitive and if a scent is too much on either end of the smell spectrum, I can not bear it.

But kudos to Ivanka, I have added her fragrance to my current perfume rotation and I am loving it.

{Beauty} Keeping it Cool and Hydrated: Facial Mists

We just had two awesome 80 degree days and I was in heaven. It was warm and breezy and not crazy hot.

Just perfect!

But as the weather heats up, I have a tendency to become a hot sweaty mess, especially when I moisturize my face and go out into the heat, which really puts a damper on the start of my day...

And believe me when I tell you, it is not a pretty sight and so annoying to walk out the door thinking and feeling that you are all cute and then instantly turn into a dripping rag.

Thankfully in recent years I have found a simple solution that is light and easy to help a sistah out with this issue... hydrating facial mists.

Here are two currently in my beauty arsenal.

Evian of course has been around for decades and is one of the most well known hydrating mists.

A new one that I have been using is the Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist that I got in one of my monthly ipsy bags (review of this program to come).

And while Evian is essentially just water powered by nitrogen...

the Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist contains a blend of rosehip, ylang ylang, resveratrol grapeseed oil and organic juices.*

Both products do different things for me, so lately I have been spritzing myself with both. I use the Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist before leaving the house in lieu of moisturizer to avoid that sweaty mess vibe and during the day for a little pick me up, I spritz on a little Evian.

I can also be found randomly using them on the bus, standing in line at a shop, wherever...spritz, spritz...

Ahhhh.....

*Note: The Juice Beauty Hydrating Mist has a very distinct almost earthy, flowery smell but it does not bother me. You also need to make sure that you do not get it in your eyes!! (ouch).

{Travel} My Stay @ The Hotel Felix Chicago

As you may know, (uh how could you not? I have only mentioned it 100+ times on twitter) it is my birthday month and one of the things that I had to have although my life would not permit a getaway, getaway, was a little staycation.

The deal of all hotel deals, a $20.13 Earth Day room rate fell into my hands one morning while perusing my twitter timeline. I of course snapped it up and added this little jaunt to the calendar.

Unlike my last little staycation, this stay was relatively uneventful (until the morning...deets below).

The Hotel Felix is a boutique hotel that opened in 2009. It is located at Clark and Huron, near the north end of what I consider central downtown Chicago, in the River North area.

Check in went relatively smoothly, although I would not call the agents rude by any means, they weren't overly friendly.

I stayed in room 618 which had a queen size bed, complimentary wifi, a 32-inch flat panel HDTV, a work desk, blackout drapes/curtains ,iHome radio, in-room safe, H2O bathroom amenities, a bathrobe and a shower (for the soaking addicted, it was a little disappointing to not have a bath tub).

The room was definitely small but not unmanageable. You had room to move about and use the facilities with ease, although the mirror was in the oddest place, stuck in the corner and obstructed by the desk.

The bed was super comfortable and I liked that there were easily accessible light fixtures on the wall with switches on either side of it. There is nothing worse than trying to fool with and find a lamp switch in darkness in an unfamiliar place, so this is a very good thing.

I hated that there wasn't a fan system in the bathroom. Once the shower heated up, everything was just, well...moist.

The view from the room was less than desired as it is of the construction site next door. The noise from it was also where my wake-up call came from the next morning..

Lastly, a couple of housekeeping notes and while I get that others may not even notice these types of "little things", they always stand out for me.

The shower tiles could definitely use a little extra eco elbow grease, as they were a bit dingy in places (forgot to snap a picture). Also, the Asha Spa menu that was in the services binder looked like it was way past it's prime and due for replacement as well as the Michigan Avenue magazine that was on the bedside table, which was grubby and untouchable (I used a towel, yeah I am that girl). Also, the ice bucket was a little beat up (I was not sure what the white stuff on it was).

Other than those things, overall my stay at the Hotel Felix was exactly what I was looking for, a respite from the daily grind.

EatStylePlay - Elle is a woman after my own heart. Besides being aesthetically gorgeous, I love that her site covers so many of my own passions...

Gabi of Gabifresh just announced that she has designed a 5 piece capsule collection for swimsuitsforall and gave a little behind the scenes look. Awesome!

ReDress has gone thru quite a few changes the last couple of years and now Rachel Kacenjar has purchased the brand and recently successfully completed a fundraising campaign to restore/revitalize it. I supported this effort, so I dropped a few coins into her collection bucket and you should stay tuned for the grand re-opening which is scheduled for around May 8th.

Fat2Flaca - I love Janeida's spicy spirit! It must be a Chicago thang ;). She is a woman on a mission to lose 200 lbs and uses her social media sites to share the ups and downs of her journey and lots of yummy looking recipes.

Blair Chic Style - I am loving that Jessica's vision for Blair Chic has taken off in such a huge way and now even includes a styling division.

Oh and BONUS...I would be remiss to not mention the new collection that Monif C just dropped. Talk about drop dead!!! They aint ready!

{Beauty} Review: Own Skin Health Lifting Eye Cream

My main issue with my skin, especially on my face is usually dryness.

Although I am deep into my 40's now, I am not that girl looking to try a lot of what I call the "heavy hitters", like retinol and the like because I have been there and done that and my skin was not the happier for it.

So, when a product drops in my beauty basket that promises results without that type of product, I am more than willing to give it a go.

I was sent the Own Skin Health Lifting Eye Cream from my fam at ifabbo and I have been feeding the skin around my eyes with it the past few weeks.

Own is a San Francisco based skin-health company that believes in the holistic approach towards healthy skin, i.e without dousing you with chemicals.

The Own Skin Health Lifting Eye Cream is retinol, paraben and sulfate free.

What I am liking the most is that the eye cream is not greasy and does not irritate my eyes. I have literally been using the smallest dab and just patting it a bit and keeping it moving.

I am currently in one of my minimalist (aka lazy) makeup phases, so it is pretty much all that I have been putting on my eyes but when I get back in the mood for beautifying my eyes, I will probably use a tad bit more when I apply foundation around my eyes.

So in a nutshell, this Own product has earned my beauty stamp of approval.

{Tech} Guess What Mama's Got?

A brand spankin new camera...and it was long overdue.

After I lost the one I had for over 7 years, during what was (and frankly still is, as I STILL can't get over it) one of the most traumatizing, unbelievable moments of my life, I snagged a budget friendly camera.

It did it's thang for awhile, you know...

I was able to capture some pretty good shots...even at night using my tripod and timer...

But I also wanted to chuck it into the nearest garbage can plenty a day when moments that should have been perfectly captured, were not.

So, when it finally died a short death a few weeks back, while I was a little miffed because of course there are always pictures to be taken, I wasn't all that mad...

Like...thanks but good riddance...

I had grown tired of fooling around with it.

I had been toying with the idea of upgrading for some time but I honestly just was not all that eager to drop a lot of coins on one.

But a blogger must go on and you can't do so without a camera and while my iphone has been coming in handy for quick snaps at events, there is only so much you can do with it, (although I do have some sweet apps on it that I think are blogger must haves...post to come).

The camera is a Canon EOS Rebel T3 (can you say 5 easy payments? Woot!). Obviously not the most current model in the line but after just a couple of random snaps straight out the box, I could not find a care to give about that...

So, welcome new camera. I think we are going to get along smashingly and you are actually going to make me do something I never do...read your instructions...

{Beauty} EDEN Bodyworks in Chicago

Note: In my effort to be a good little blogger, I wrote the majority of this post during the event but I held off on posting it because I wanted to wait until I could add my thoughts about the product that I received in my goodie bag. Butttt....since I left it in Tori's car and who knows when I will actually get it, I am just posting this without it and hopefully at some point I will get to use and review the product.

The EDEN Bodyworks team presented a panel on the elements of style: fashion, hair and beauty.

The story behind the brand is pretty impressive. Jasmine Lawrence was just 13 years old when she created the first product in 2004 and the brand has grown to 15 products currently in their beauty arsenal.

I had been aware of the brand for a bit now, having seen them on twitter and various blogs but I hadn't tried their products. This presentation has definitely peeked my interest even more and I can't wait to try it, if only someone would bring my bag to me...hint, hint...TORI!!!!

During the evening, I hung with my girls Aeleise of Hair Love Art, (who is soon going to do something major with my hair!!!) and of course Tori (aka Lucille) of Glasses and Glitter.

There was lots of fabulously coiffed and stylish ladies on hand.

There was a panel and models presented to discuss current fashion trends, various aspects of hair care and of course the EDEN Bodyworks products, in particular their new line, the Coconut Shea collection.

My hair is natural and I have been mainly wearing wigs for the past 2 years because I just haven't found the perfect style that suits me yet. I originally told Aeleise that I wanted her to cut my hair short like hers but after the conversation at the event, I think I may have changed my mind again.

Ylorie Anderson, the host of the evening is a straight natural and the more I listened and thought about it, the more I thought it would probably be the best solution for me. I try a lot of products and spend hours dealing with my natural texture but because my natural texture is actually made up of 3 different textures, I just braid it, rock wigs as my protective style and keep it moving.

Fashion Challenge - {Rock}in It Off the Beaten Path

I am taking on a new style challenge and even as I type this, I am wondering why in the world I have decided to do this, (especially when pieces like this and this show up online calling my name)!!!

LOL

Anyway, I am gonna be strong and do the damn thang!!

...I have decided to not shop some of the more popular plus size destinations for the next 2 months and to only rock what I already own (which is A LOT) or what I find while thrifting or from smaller more independent brands.

The main reason being that besides saving a little loot and putting it into making my new LuxAholic spot a home, I was looking at some of my favorite blogs and I realized that so many of us plus size girls all have A LOT of the exact same clothes.

Now I have never been one of those people who would freak out when I see someone wearing the same thing as me AND I know that even when we own the same things, we all usually put our own spin on them but I want to branch out and show even more individuality and more creativity with my fashion expressions.

I mean isn't that the purpose of fashion anyway?

Sooo...it will be a true test of my will to not shop my regular haunts, especially with all the awesome pieces that I have been seeing but I love a good challenge and I am very EXCITED to take this one on!

And thankfully awesome pieces like these that I already own, make me feel that this will be more than doable!

{Community} Talk of IowaPR Size Discrimination Discussion

Earlier today I lent my voice to a conversation regarding being plus size and size discrimination on Iowa Public Radio's Talk of Iowa with Charity Nebbe.

As most of us who are fat know, fat shaming and discrimination is an everyday occurrence from the doctor's office to the corporate office to the aisles of department stores.

Katie Opperman, a baker starts the conversation off by walking us through her experience with a doctor, who it turns out misdiagnosed her because he basically attributed her health issues solely to her weight.

She also experienced other "medical professionals" who were just downright ugly to her before she found a doctor who actually diagnosed her properly and treated her appropriately.

She also talked about how being fat is basically the last "justified" subject that random people feel no qualms about giving their assumptive two cents, like maybe you should work out, or try to diet, etc

You hear all the time about people being randomly called fat on the street. I have had this happen to me a few times, when some dude didn't like how I responded to some randomness from them and while I personally could not possibly care any less, I know that this has/is a huge issue for a lot of other people.

Next up was Melissa Zimdars, a graduate student who specializes in the area of fat studies.

She and Charity presented some very interesting statistics about some of the myths and the realities of weight.

For example, there is a study from Yale that showed that weight prejudices start with women when they are 13lbs overweight and men tend to experience weight prejudice when they are 75lbs overweight. (side eye)

A guy named William called in to share his experience when he went out for a job and was told that "I am not supposed to tell you this, you are really big and I don't think that they would hire you".

And the interesting part about this is that there really aren't any laws that treat this kind of discrimination as a protective category, so usually there isn't much that can or is done about it.

Another caller, Angie talked about the online bullying that occurs a lot of times when fat folks post pictures of themselves online and how she and some of her friends shy away from doing so, to avoid the abuse.

I spoke about my views on the current state of fashion and the need for more space in the stores, more plus size models modeling plus size clothing, etc

It was a great, informative and I think important discussion about the state of fatness today.

{Life} A Birthday & a Cause

It's April aka MY BIRTHDAY MONTH and now that my move is over, although I am swamped in unpacking and making plans for the new space, I am over the moon that I am turning 44 this month and I plan to celebrate it to the max!!

Here are some of my plans:

Tonight my rugrat and I went out for a girls only dinner and chatted and decompressed from what was the most exhausting week!

Tomorrow night I am going to see one of my favorite jazz performers, Julia Huff do her thing.

Here we are the last time that I saw her. She is just so awesome!

Of course I will be sharing some of the other things that I get into thruout the month but the BIGGEST way that I am celebrating my birthday this year is via my charity: water campaign.

Basically I have pledged to raise $750 for this incredible cause and if you help me reach my goal, I would so love you long time!!

{Life} In My Hands!

After a timing snafu where the movers arrived almost 5 hours late, we have moved most of my stuff and I am literally typing this while soakin my achy body in the tub but I am grateful and excited to wrap this up over the next couple of days and move on to the next phase of my life. I have had a few moments this week where I was sad about leaving my neighborhood, which I love, which has any and everything that I need within a few blocks in every direction but I was converting my pinterest account from a personal one to a business one and came across this and it put everything in perspective.

I took this picture several years ago in NYC and while it's obviously an ad for Nesquick, it reminds me of the simple fact that how happy I will be in any neighborhood is in my hands! HAPPY WEEKEND FAM!

So I have facebooked/tweeted about it for weeks and mentioned it a little here on le blog but finally my move takes place this week.

I wrote a bit about why I am moving and the home decor fun to come on Luxaholic.

It has been so long since I have moved that I forgot how fun it could be...NOT!

I am physically exhausted and achy in every possible way.

The movers come tomorrow and we still have a bit to go but because of my ride or die kid, we will be ready!

I am so thankful for her and all that she has been doing to help her mama. She turned 19 last month and will be leaving for the Marines soon and I am so crazy proud of the woman she is becoming.
