I haven't been blogging here much lately because college ha started up again and I just haven't had much time. Rest assured that I will make up for the lack of content, starting with this post and theses amazing gimp brushes ported by project-gimpBC from photoshop. There are loads of handy brushes that can be used, ranging from grunge to fancy swishes and curls. Visit project-gimpbc for some very amazing brushes.

Someone has made this fantastic plugin that allows you to open and save PSD files using paint.net, this is great for anyone out there who wants to open PSD files but doesn't have have photoshop. It preserves all layers so you can edit them at your will.

Improving your blog

We all know that If the thing that you have to say isn't interesting to other people it's not going to be a huge boost for your Blog. But maybe it's not hat you have to say by itself that counts but the way you say it. What if you have interesting points but when you write it is written plainly and frankly boringly. There are several things you can do to improve your Blog post and build readership.

Use metaphors

If you are trying to explain something that it hard to understand then using metaphors is the easiest way to explain it.

Don't use complicated jargon

Using complicated jargon may confuse the reader after all they may not be as experienced in the matter as you are.

Use pictures

using pictures and diagrams to help visually explain something it better than writing pages of text. After all a picture is worth a thousand words.

Keep it short and to the point

Keeping your post short and to the point means that your readers won't get bored. If you go off topic then readers may not stick around to find out what your point was.

Use relevant titles

Using relevant titles is a must, if a reader comes to Read a post and the title suggest one thing but the post is about something else, the reader is unlikely to return.

keep at it

It takes a while for you to gain readership so be patient and keep at it.

Create cool looking "Glass" buttons like this using paint. net which is a free program I have been playing around with. It seems more lightweight than The Gimp and it is way more user friendly. Check out this tutorial on how to make these buttons.

Pixie, my colours

Have you ever fired up your graphics editor, opened a file and used the colour picker tool just to find the hex or RGB code for the colours you want? Well, if you use pixie you won't need to because:

Its a colour picker that includes a mouse tracker. Run it, simply point to a colour and it will tell you the hex, RGB, HTML, CMYK and HSV values of that colour. You can then use these values to reproduce the selected colour in your favorite programs.

Doesn't it seem really cool. I haven't used it yet but will soon.

Flat File Blogging Platforms

I have found a couple of tools which can be used for people who can't use php or mySQL. One of them is one I have been using for a year called thingamablog. thingamablog FTP's your blog onto your server therefore it only requires enough space on the server. It stores the database locally.

Another is Blosxom which only requires cgi on the server, you post by creating a .txt file and uploading it to your server, it's really flexible and lightweight. It again doesn't require a database. These are only two I have found.

Pivot is another blogging platform, I haven't taken a close enough look at this to give you any real details.

Flatpress is a flat file blogging platform thats based on wordpress. I haven't tried this one either so I wouldn't know how well this works.

But if you can use PHP but not MYSQL you should try SPHPB which is a php blogging platform that uses flat file databases.
If I find anymore I will post them.

Blogging with Qumana is such a nice experince, I have tried Windows Live writer but came back to using Qumana because I prefer it. It has a much nicer feel and a lot more funtions. You should try it out.

Free Domain Name

Lots of people want there own domain name but don't want to....pay. So there is a website called freedomainname.co.nr which gives you a free domain and redirects the users to your site. There are two options cloak: On or Off. This gives you the ability so when the user visits your domain it will either display the domain they just typed e.g. customblogging.co.nr or the actual address e.g. customblogging.blogspot.com.

The advantages of having the cloaking on is that the visitors only see customblogging.co.nr, but the disadvantages of this is it will not show your permalink because it is being masked.
I have it set so that customblogging.co.nr is shown as customblogging.blogspot.com so that people can see the permalinks.

Another great hack that could be used on a blogger blog is the "peek-A-Boo" Navbar.
It makes the blogger bar appear when you put your mouse over it.

The code:
#navbar-iframe{opacity:0.0;filter:alpha(Opacity=0)}
#navbar-iframe:hover{opacity:1.0;filter:alpha(Opacity=100, FinishedOpacity=100)}

That's it! Just put it in your CSS.
