Since y'all like trivia so much, here is another collection on the unlucky bird that we eat on this auspicious event. Enjoy!

Benjamin Franklin argued that the turkey, and not the bald eagle, should be the national symbol of America. He claimed that the “vain and silly” turkey was a far better choice than the bald eagle, which he thought was a “coward.”

Even though they are generally seen as large and ungainly, turkeys:
   • Can fly up to 55 MPH over short distances
   • Run up to 25 MPH on the ground
   • Have excellent hearing but no ears
   • Have a poor sense of smell
   • Can see in color
   • Have a 270 degree field of vision, making them difficult to sneak up on
   • Sometimes sleep in trees

Over 45 million turkeys are prepared and eaten in the United States for Thanksgiving each year.

The five most popular ways to eat the leftover turkey from Thanksgiving includes: soups or stews, sandwiches, casseroles, stir-fries and salads.

Age does matter. Older male turkeys are generally considered to be tastier than young males (stringy) or females (tough).

Young turkeys have a number of unfortunate names including “fryer” when they are less than 16 weeks old, and “roaster” when they are between 5 and 7 months old.

Only male “Tom” turkeys gobble, and they can be heard a mile away; the females only cluck or click.

The “Turkey Trot” dance was named after the short, jerky steps that turkeys make.

The Native Americans called turkeys “firkees,” which some believe to be the origin of the word. However, when turkeys are spooked they make a “turk turk turk” sound, which is where the name likely originates.

Turkeys may “gobble gobble” in English, but in Portuguese they say “Gluglu gluglu.”
I know, because I have a TRP & it's one of the most accurate handguns I've ever shot. But have you heard that the current Springfield company is not the legendary Springfield Arsenal that George Washington helped establish?

According to my exhaustive research (a few minutes on the web), in 1776, Henry Knox, Chief of Artillery for the Continental Army, passed through Springfield, MA on his way to deliver heavy cannons captured at Fort Ticonderoga to General George Washington for use in the siege of Boston. During his short visit, Knox was impressed with the town’s strategic location for America’s War for Independence. A year later, Springfield became the location for the principal arsenal for the northern states during the war. The site was used for everything from the assembly and repair of small arms, to the manufacture of wagons, saddles, fuses and cartridges, as well as a storehouse for powder and other instruments of war. Eleven years later, in 1794, the National Armory at Springfield was established by President George Washington.

For the next 192 years, the Springfield Arsenal would be the birthplace of such famous weapons like the 1903 Springfield and the M1 Garand, as well as machinery like the Blanchard Lathe which allowed for faster production of wooden stocks. However, in 1968, amid controversy, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara closed the armory that was established by our country’s first President. Not another firearm would ever come from its hallowed halls, and none have come forth since.

That same year, Elmer C. Balance registered the trademark “Springfield Armory” for his new company that made civilian versions of the venerable M14 in San Antonio, TX. Shortly thereafter, he sold his company to the Reese family. The new owners expanded the line into handguns, particularly the M1911 with tremendous success. The company was eventually moved to Genesco, IL where it resides today. It has no association or connection to the original Springfield Armory other than the name.

Although their M1A rifles are manufactured at the Illinois facility, all of Springfield Armory’s handguns are all manufactured by different companies in other countries according to Springfield Armory’s high standards. Their M1911 derivative pistols are manufactured by IMBEL in Brazil, and the XD series pistols are Springfield Armory stamped HS2000’s manufactured in Croatia. Springfield Armory also boasts on of the finest 1911 custom shops on the planet.

So, when Springfield Armory says that they’re “The First Name in American Firearms” ...that is true. But what’s in a name? In this case it’s history, tradition, and good old American ingenuity. Fortunately, Springfield, Inc. seems to be continuing that tradition just fine.

Don’t you think?
I guess most of that end up in parents' bellies when their kids aren't looking... LOL! But what are the origins of this annual event that wreaks havoc to our waistlines? This made me ponder... what will an amateur historian like me do when faced with a question like this? I sought history.com for answers of course!

According to the website, Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred.

On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Now boys & girls, that is the ancient origins of this event that we celebrate every year... so please... easy on the tootsie rolls!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! Be safe.

In the world of firearms, there exists more add-ons and accessories for our toys than for our wives wardrobe. The 1911 and AR-15 are perfect examples of two of the most highly accessorized (or customized, if you prefer) firearms on the planet. There are literally THOUSANDS of items available for both platforms that can transform your weapon from that boring, out-of-the-box plinker, into a massive, hulking, purveyor of doom. Many upgrades do make the gun shoot better and more accurately, like match grade barrels and triggers, while others aid in target acquisition. However, when does it become too much? When does the ‘Coolness Factor’ overtake the practicality of the accessory? I’m all for making your weapon shoot as well as you can make it, but do you really need that third laser/light combo on your battle rifle?

Remember, the more things you put on a weapon, the more things you have to maintain and think about. Plus, there are more things that can go wrong with the very thing that may be called upon to save your life. Batteries die, but iron sights will always work. Even after an EMP. Just food for thought.
Living in Sniddler's Gulch then was very much like our way of life today... Politicians constantly peddling their goods and their so-called solutions to the unwary masses and often ending up where we began... When will we learn?!
Maybe once in a while? As a CCW perhaps? Well, how do you carry your firearm in terms of the Conditions of Readiness? Y'know, the legendary Jeff Cooper's system that defines the state of readiness of 1911-type handguns....

Condition 0 - A round is in the chamber, hammer is cocked, and the safety is off.
Condition 1 - Also known as "cocked and locked," means a round is in the chamber, the hammer is cocked, and the manual thumb safety on the side of the frame is applied.
Condition 2 - A round is in the chamber and the hammer is down.
Condition 3 - The chamber is empty and hammer is down with a charged magazine in the gun.
Condition 4 - The chamber is empty, hammer is down and no magazine is in the gun.
I found this very informative video on YouTube explaining these conditions. I also found a cool article on sightm1911.com about the advantages & disadvantages of each.

According to the article and as stated in the video as well, Condition Two is way problematic. The chances of an accidental discharge is so high that it's not worth it...

Condition Two is problematic for several reasons, and is the source of more negligent discharges than the other conditions. When you rack the slide to chamber a round in the 1911, the hammer is cocked and the manual safety is off. There is no way to avoid this with the 1911 design. In order to lower the hammer, the trigger must be pulled and the hammer lowered slowly with the thumb onto the firing pin, the end of which is only a few millimeters away from the primer of a live round. Should the thumb slip, the hammer would drop and fire the gun. Not only would a round be launched in circumstances which would be at best embarrassing and possibly tragic, but also the thumb would be behind the slide as it cycled, resulting in serious injury to the hand. A second problem with this condition is that the true 1911A1 does not have a firing pin block and an impact on the hammer which is resting on the firing pin could conceivably cause the gun to go off, although actual instances of this are virtually nonexistent. Finally, in order to fire the gun, the hammer must be manually cocked, again with the thumb. In an emergency situation, this adds another opportunity for something to go wrong and slows the acquisition of the sight picture.
These experts agree, Conditions One & Three are the intelligent ways to go... Now, if only they allow me to carry CCW in California...
SAFELY. One of the basic things that a responsible gun owner should know is how to do a Function Check on his or her firearm. It is recommended that you do this when you're buying a new or used 1911, or if you've replaced some internal parts. I found a cool website, called coolgunsite.com, that shows the different steps with illustrations. Click here.

But I found an even better resource... a video of our good buddy, Lima, aka Limalife (guest host of the September 1911 Contest), explaining how it's properly done. This is one of the reasons why I'm a big fan of her videos... she knows her stuff!
I've been watching a lot of AR-15 videos lately & here is another interesting one I found on YouTube. Being a California resident (yeah, don't laugh), I unfortunately have a CA-legal AR-15, which a lot of my buddies from Texas scoff at... :) This video is quite informative and I like how it was presented. Enjoy!
The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parties. Speeches or political demonstrations are more low-key than May 1 Labor Day celebrations in most countries, although events held by labor organizations often feature political themes and appearances by candidates for office, especially in election years. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water sports, and public art events. Yeah, we are spending the day at the beach. Labor Day also marks the beginning of the NFL and college football seasons. NCAA teams usually play their first games the week before Labor Day, with the NFL traditionally playing their first game the Thursday following Labor Day....

But do you know why we celebrate it?

The first Labor Day in the United States was observed on September 5, 1882 in New York City, by the Central Labor Union of New York, the nation's first integrated major trade union. It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike. The September date originally chosen by the CLU of NY and observed by many of the nation's trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers' Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would stir up negative emotions linked to the Haymarket Affair, for which it had been observed to commemorate. All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories had made it a statutory holiday.

The Pullman Strike...

The Pullman Strike was a nationwide conflict between labor unions and railroads that occurred in the United States in 1894. The conflict began in the town of Pullman, Illinois on May 11 when approximately 3,000 employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company began a strike in response to recent reductions in wages, bringing traffic west of Chicago to a halt. The American Railway Union, the nation's first industry-wide union, subsequently became embroiled in what The New York Times described as "a struggle between the greatest and most important labor organization and the entire railroad capital" that involved some 250,000 workers in 27 states at its peak. President Grover Cleveland ordered federal troops to Chicago to end the strike, causing debate within his own cabinet about whether the President had the constitutional authority to do so. The conflict peaked on July 6, shortly after the troops' arrival in the city, and ended several days later.

The strike was broken up by United States Marshals and some 12,000 United States Army troops, sent in by President Grover Cleveland on the premise that the strike interfered with the delivery of U.S. Mail, ignored a federal injunction and represented a threat to public safety. The arrival of the military and subsequent deaths of workers led to further outbreaks of violence. During the course of the strike, 13 strikers were killed and 57 were wounded.

Now when you're at the beach celebrating, think about why we have this holiday... it's a way the federal government tried to appease the labor unions for those who died during the 1894 Pullman Strike!!!
Exercise your right to bear arms... SAFELY!
