Perhaps other blogs will pick this up and help.

An article from the ultra-liberal New York Times (“Hell’s Bible”) is posted on the even more liberal MSNBC.

The article concerns the objections of the USCCB against pressure from the Obama Administration and/or states to force Catholic adoption agencies to allow homosexual “couples” to adopt.

You have to scroll down to the bottom of the MSNBC webpage to find the poll form.

Of course, most of what he says is incorrect, but the satire and delivery makes it enjoyable to view.
Warning, there is profanity that is bleeped out.

Her last owner, an Italian Christian, moved her (escaped more like it) to Italy where she eventually won her freedom through the Italian courts because Catholic Italy didn't recognize the institution of slavery. She left her owner and joined the Canossians, a religious order.

During her time in Italy she was befriended by a village priest and converted to Catholicism. After being freed from slavery she entered the Canossians as "Josephine Margarita Afortunada" in 1890 A.D., receiving Holy Communion for the first time from the Cardinal Patriarch of Venice himself.

Saint Bakhita's life as a slave was always that of giving and charity with gentleness and a smile. She continued these virtues as a religious.

Her legacy was that of transformation that is possible through suffering. Her story of deliverance from physical slavery also symbolizes all those who find meaning and inspiration in her life for their own deliverance from spiritual slavery. Reflecting her own material life of being forced to convert to Islam and finding peace and love in the arms of Christ as a Catholic.

Tracking had been strong but the studio had expected a gross in the $17M-19M range. CinemaScore was a "B". The audience equally divided between males and females, with 64% over the age of 25. The studio used Anthony Hopkins' pedigree to pursue an older target for the film. To appeal to younger moviegoers, it exploited the intensity of the exorcism moments and the premise of the unknown in the marketing materials. Interestingly, as Warner Bros was developing the campaign, the topic of exorcists became a current news event with the recent increase in the Catholic Church's recruitment and training of exorcists to fill what they characterized as an alarmingly growing need. This news got coverage, resulting in a high profile OP Ed piece in the New York Times. We bolstered that piece, and used a quote from it in the main trailer and in several TV spots, a very unusual tool that anchored our disturbing, effective premise that the film is “based on true events”.

Hopkins' pedigree is the core of the campaign, and he has done a very heavy press schedule on everything from Regis to Charlie Rose, and morning shows to late night. Additionally, we launched a significant Hispanic marketing campaign, through publicity, grass roots activity and a heavy media buy.

We also developed the faith angle through an extensive program with our consultants at Grace Hill Media. The outreach included drafting off of the topical conversation that was already happening within the church and allowing that to give the film a level of credibility. Father Gary Thomas participated in a number of interviews for us including an LA Times piece and a segment on Nightline that aired the Thursday before we opened. While this is a difficult segment to pinpoint in the tracking, the message of the film clearly has relevance for that audience and we feel that we captured their interest.

The campaign kicked off with trailers on Hereafter, Saw VII and movies throughout the holiday season to target both younger & older moviegoers. We built a mix of broad commercial films & older, more sophisticated awards films to get the right exposure.

We also ran a heavy TV schedule on everything from BCS College football games to NFL playoffs, and broad multi-targeted programming.

In terms of tracking, The Rite shows a pretty well-balanced balanced awareness and interest profile. The younger audiences will tend to gravitate to the suspense-thriller genre, while older audiences are likely to be drawn to the genre plus Anthony Hopkins appearing in his first starring role in quite some time. Notably, there were aggressive efforts in the last week towards Latino moviegoers, which could generate some upside to the film's opening weekend prospects as they tend to represent early boxoffice attendees.

As the campaign evolved, the nature of the story (centering around faith and belief) & the pedigree of Hopkins naturally led us to pursue an older target for the film. But we also wanted to appeal to younger moviegoers, so we exploited the intensity of the exorcism moments and the premise of the unknown in our marketing materials. Interestingly, as we were developing the campaign, the topic of exorcists became a current news event with the recent increase in the Catholic Church's recruitment and training of exorcists to fill what they characterized as an alarmingly growing need. This news got coverage, resulting in a high profile OP Ed piece in the New York Times. We bolstered that piece, and used a quote from it in the main trailer and in several TV spots, a very unusual tool that anchored our disturbing, effective premise that the film is “based on true events”.
Truly devout living compels us to actively defend the right to life, which is our duty as the children of God. However, the defense of life involves education and exposing disturbing signs of moral decay. Heavily responsible for these recent immoral trends, dangerous forms of unnatural contraception are an increasingly-valid threat and widely misunderstood. Although the bible asserts that children “are a blessing to be cherished and cared for when given,” these methods of pregnancy prevention challenge those words with their blatant disrespect for life, increasingly leading young adults astray.

Nevertheless, many families continually choose these “convenient” forms of contraception to control their family size. Even unmarried couples now frequently use these forms of birth control to recklessly satisfy their sexual desires. Even more troubling still are the countless young people engaging in sex freely because a variety of dangerous contraceptives apparently allow it. The use of these products isn’t just an insult to relationships or marriage, but an attack on the entire foundation of children and the family itself.

By largely relieving couples of the “threat” of pregnancy, contraceptives have legitimized premarital sex. However, when couples do view sex as an acceptable activity before marriage, they fail to live life for the glory of God. Children, for these sexually active, unmarried couples, become seen as a burden. As a result, the entire relationship is corrupted, with carnal satisfaction replacing deeper, worthy forms of connection. However, the mutual respect a relationship demands can also become secondary to the selfish gratification premarital sex provides. Without the sanctity of marriage, this disrespect can reach even greater lengths, as individuals become objectified as nothing more than sources of sexual enjoyment.

This disrespect manifests itself in society today in the form of oral contraceptives, which are an insult to both the family and children. Remarkably, these deadly forms of contraception are carelessly sanctioned everywhere, from the media to schools. They assist in the increasing sexual promiscuity of our nation and the rampant spread of disease. Despite being the most dangerous form of contraception, oral contraceptives are now the most popular as well. Unlike barrier forms of contraception, these pills are up to 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy. In addition, they are cheap, readily available at family planning clinics, often at reduced prices, and convenient. Women need only take a pill at the same time each day to effectively eliminate the chance of pregnancy. Unfortunately, few young adults using this pill recognize the dangerous physical side effects that commonly occur.

These side effects begin with the dangerous implications hormonal methods of birth control can generate. While effective at preventing pregnancy, they falsely imply complete protection to all outcomes of casual sex, including sexually transmitted disease. Although schools frequently fulfill their minimal obligation, warning students about the dangers of this disease, the incomplete education they provide might simply prompt more confused young women to turn to this drug as a safeguard.

Alarmingly, the producers of these drugs are also accountable for these widespread misconceptions. Bayer HealthCare, the manufacturer of several popular oral contraceptives, devotes millions of dollars to advertising campaigns every year. According to this marketing, these drugs treat everything from acne to premenstrual depression. However, the FDA recently requested Bayer remove these television commercials, explaining that none of those claims have been conclusively proven and only mislead young adults further.

Despite the revelations about this drug manufacturer’s lack of integrity, the worst side effect of this drug remains the destructive physical consequences. Oral contraceptives literally disrupt a woman’s internal balance, altering hormones to make the body think it is pregnant. Although proponents of these destructive pills are quick to point to the decreased levels of estrogen in current products, many serious health problems still accompany these drugs, including cardiovascular complications. A recent Yaz lawsuit involves a woman who developed blood clots in her lungs after using this product. Because estrogen can play a role in blood coagulation and is a main ingredient, these drugs increase the risk of stroke and blood clotting.

The disrespect users of oral contraception show their body is a direct affront to God, as we are made in his image. Regardless of how users attempt to defend their decision to blatantly disregard the sanctity of life, they will never find justification in the eyes of God. Because it is the duty of all Christians to preserve life, it remains imperative to spread the truth about dangerous forms of contraception, especially birth control pills. These attacks on life represent an assault on decency and threaten to damage the moral fiber of this country until nothing pure remains and we are left with a wave of broken families, crime and rampant disease.

Contraception is not a sin because it can make women ill or lead to death. It fails to be a sin because it causes the spread of sexually transmitted disease. The use of contraception is not even a sin because it makes manufacturers of these immoral products disgustingly wealthy or tempts couples to commit adultery. Contraception is a sin because it attempts to remove God’s influence in reproduction, illustrating a desire to rule one’s own fate instead of serving The Lord. Unfortunately, the immoral sexual tendencies in modern society have gone so far that it is not only atheists and other misguided souls that must be informed of the evils of contraception. Even self-identified Catholics must be reminded of the promise they made to God which included the preservation of life, morality and reverence for all things sacred.
“If you’re eating Chick-fil-A, you’re eating anti-gay,” screamed Kim Severson of the New York Times.
Chick-fil-A has a Christian ethos* written into their organization and is beloved among people of all stripes, especially Evangelical Christians.

Souls are at stake and our bishops seem more concerned about the next fundraiser or not leading with boldness and the Truth. Instead they grovel to political correctness and stand quite on society's most contentious issues such as abortion and same sex marriage.

She is best remembered for portraying Saint Thomas More‘s daughter, Margaret More, in what is arguably the greatest Catholic film of all time, A Man For All Seasons.

She was very beautiful and enchanting and her role as Margaret More captured the essences of an integrated Catholic life that is an excellent example for laypeople everywhere today.

The following clip is that of the King paying his Lord Chancellor, Saint Thomas More, a visit on his estate. The King encounters More’s family and is introduced to More’s daughter, Margaret, at the :45 mark of the clip:

The friends and family of Matthew A. Coles would like to share with the public an inspiring story of hope, gratitude and miraculous healing and to invite the public to a special benefit event to be held at Mario’s Restaurant in Webster, Texas on the evening of this Tuesday, December 21, 2010.

Matthew and his wife Lucy met and fell in love at Texas A&M University where they were active members of St. Mary’s Catholic Student Center. They became engaged in the spring of 2005 and moved to Washington, D.C. so Matthew could pursue a Ph.L. in Philosophy at the Catholic University of America. He hoped to work as a philosophy professor to support his dream of having a large family with his soon-to-be wife. In June 2006, only three weeks before he and Lucy were married, Matthew was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and told he had 6 months to live. At age 23, Matthew had never smoked cigarettes and had no family history of lung cancer. The origin of the cancer was a mystery.

After spending another two years in Washington, D.C. continuing his studies and undergoing extensive chemical treatments with little medicinal progress, Matthew and Lucy returned to Houston to be closer to their families and pursue the full healing of his body under the wisdom of the Lord and with the guidance of a natural nutritional program developed by the late Dr. Max Gerson. During that time Matthew and Lucy served as Directors of High School Youth Ministry for Saint Clare of Assisi Catholic Church and continued to touch many lives, young and old, with their witness of gratitude and hope. Despite warnings from physicians of infertility because of the methods that would be utilized in the early stages of the cancer treatment and despite the recommendation of physicians that the couple use artificial means to conceive children, Matthew and Lucy were blessed with the gift of three boys naturally conceived. John-Matthew, who was conceived during chemotherapy, is 3 years old, Pio is 18 months old, and Andrew Damien was born on Thanksgiving Day 2010. A week and a half later, on the evening of December 5, 2010, four and half years after the initial diagnosis, Matt won his battle with cancer and passed into eternal life.

Matthew was a son, brother, husband, father, and true Catholic renaissance man, whether he was uploading to his music player with lectures in French from his favorite philosopher, juggling for youth, making crêpes for his wife, building a toboggan for friends, or training his boys in the art of chivalry and hospitality. He had wisdom to share but often spent his time listening rather than speaking. In the face of a terminal diagnosis, Matthew lived in a profound state of peace despite great suffering and uncertainty, often comforting those who came to comfort him. Anyone who knew Matthew recognized the profound joy with which he lived his life. The joy of the Lord was his strength. This enabled Matthew to live a humble life of beatitude and simplicity by which one could not help but notice and be moved.

Below is a prayer Matthew wrote about a year and half ago:

“Vivre d’Amour” (To live in Love)

To live your life, oh Christ – here and now, and with my whole being. To give every one of my days to You, and with each of my actions to live in Your Presence. To put others before myself – and to give myself for them. To focus on taking care of myself only insofar as it is an act of love towards You, Lord and towards others – especially Lucy and our family. To love without measure and without fear. To be misunderstood by this world, and to love You all the more!

For more information and the full obituary please visit: http://sites.google.com/site/familycoles2/

We invite the public to a benefit event to be held for the Coles Family on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Mario’s Restaurant located at 618 W Nasa Parkway, Webster, Texas. For more information about Matthew Coles and the benefit event, please contact Nick Gardener at (713) 816-8790.
Wikileaks information has been disclosed by Rome Reports that the U.S. intelligence services were completely caught off guard and surprised at the election of then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI.

U.S. intelligence was expecting a Latin American as the next pope, and predicted that then Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger would have lost in the first round voting.

The rest from Father Zuhlsdorf:

Before the election the staff of the US embassy to the Holy See sent speculations to Washington about the one to be elected.

“The first factor will be age, the cardinals will seek someone who is neither too young nor too old, because they don’t want to have another funeral and conclave quickly” but “they also want to avoid having a long pontificate like that of John Paul II.” Furthermore, “it will be a person in reasonably good health”. Another element will be “linguistic ability” and he will have to know Italian.

Yes, folks, this is penetrating analysis from the US embassy to the Holy See.

Going on… they opined that it would be a Latin American cardinal. Perhaps they were glued to CNN. Had they been listening to FoxNews and people like me (was a contributor at the time) they would have gotten it right. But I digress.

On the day of the election itself, there was a cable to Washington which pooh-poohed the possible election of Ratzinger. Apparently the election shocked them. They were also bamboolzed by media reports that Ratzinger was an “autocratic despot”. That’s what you get when your remote TV control is stuck on CNN and you hang only with liberal clergy in Rome. On the other hand, when one of them high up in the embassy met Cardinal Ratzinger he was described as “surprisingly humble, spiritual and easy to deal with”.

There were speculations about a Rome/Germany axis for the Church. Lord… did they really have people that dense working in the US embassy back then? And that was during an administration friendly toward the Holy See.

On 12 May 2005 there was the aforementioned 7 page document “Benedict XVI: Looking Ahead to the New Pontificate” which projected what was going to happen with an “identikit” of the new Pope. It suggested that this Pope would act in continuity with his predecessor. It included the line: “in time of crisis the Church finds refuge in European identity. They also suggested that this new Pope would battle secularism in the USA and the rest of the West, turning his attention also to developing nations, in particular Latin America were there are many disappointed Catholics because a Latin American Pope wasn’t elected.

From what I can glean from the article in La Stampa, the folks in the US embassy to the Holy See were mired in cliches and working from preconceptions which blinded them to the facts in front of their faces before the election. As a personal aside: about a year before the death of John Paul, I made a bet with another journalist about who would be elected… not whom we wanted to see elected, but whom we thought actually would be. We could choose three in order of likelihood. My choice of Ratzinger at the top of the list brought out a laugh of incredulity. But to be fair I laughed also at his choice of Cardinal Danneels. That anecdote serves to show something of the mindset of a lot of people floating close to the center of things, those most “in the know” and involved in speculation (a Vatican watcher obsession).

It seems to me that the Catholic Church is fairly important. The US State Department would do well to put competent, serious people who really understand the workings of the Church in their embassy to the Holy See.

Mr. Allen, by "dated expectations of how the Vatican paper ought to behave", do you mean as in defending Church teaching and not embarrassing the pope at all costs?

Are you kidding me?

No, really, are you kidding me Mr. John "anyone who practices their Catholic faith is equivalent to the Taliban" Allen?
Mr. Allen's credibility has always been held in high esteem by both sides of the Catholic aisle, ie, orthodox and dissident Catholics. After reading his book on Opus Dei, I came away impressed by his even handedness.
But with the recent AP article referencing John Allen's "Taliban Catholicism" comment in which Mr. Allen paints all practicing Catholics as the Taliban and now his defense of L'Osservatore Romano's major league gaffe in which mass swaths of humanity now think that Catholic teaching on contraception has changed, he has the appalling gall to smear orthodox/conservative Catholic bloggers?

Maybe it's time to question John Allen's journalistic credentials as a balanced journalist with this latest travail in journalistic adventurism.

This just befuddles the mind.

Since I have upgraded the The American Catholic website and created two new websites, Gulf Coast Catholic and The Pulpit, I have decided to upgrade Custos Fidei as well. I won't get a URL, but I will mess around with the programming and see what I can do to make it more user friendly.

If any of my loyal readers have any idea, suggestion, and or requests, now is the time to speak your peace.

Just as a friendly reminder since we are on the topic of websites, if you miss your twice daily Catholic news updates here at Custos Fidei, I haven't stopped them, I've just created a brand new website just for them at The Pulpit.

In Jesus, Mary, & Joseph,
